Our very existence here on earth is so dependent on the sun …. my sun-baked beaches …. cotton-wool clouds ……….. glistening waves ….. wouldn’t be possible without that great big star at the centre of the solar system. It’s the one infallible truth in every day … the sun will rise! When the sun is shining I’m invincible
… I can do anything …. no mountain is too high and no trouble too difficult to overcome.

I’m not the only one that doesn’t like the wind … bumped … quite literally … into Denise and Abi (the dog) on the beach this morning and the look on her face was probably a reflection of the look on mine …. what is it about the wind that unsettles us so much. If it wasn’t for the wind today would be glorious!!

Apparently …. according to Google … oh yeah …. that arbiter of all wisdom …. there’s a reason for the wind making us feel unsettled. It’s something to do with the balance of positive and negative ions in the air being shifted ….. positive ions are produced by wind …. YES …. something positive that makes us feel shit!!! Normal air is about even in positive and negative ions … when you are near water this ratio increases 2:1 in favour of the negative ions. No wonder being on the beach and near the waves makes me feel better, even when it’s windy …. it’s scientifically proven that it’s good for me!!!

There was an unexpected bonus on the beach this morning though …. an additional dose of caffeine … courtesy of no. 1 son on his way back from having his war wounds re-dressed at A + E. I don’t advise having an argument with a slippery concrete path going down a hill on a bike …. generally you’re going to come off worse ……

I’m not sure if additional doses of caffeine are a good idea today though … they make me bounce at the best of times and when you combine that with the additional insanity the wind causes ….. hmmmmm ….. that semblance of normality I’m trying to achieve?? ….. it’s an illusion ….
Besides from your backwards passing as well as insufficient shielding tools, maybe one of the most i

Besides from your backwards passing as well as insufficient shielding tools, maybe one of the most identifying part involving rugby will be the ball notes Gary Stone. This seems as being an American style football, however a whole lot larger, much more just like a tiny watermelon. Originally there was no standard law controlling the measurement or form from the ball, when they had been chosen in the measurement with the pig bladder inserted in to a handmade leather protection. In eighteen-seventy, a Rugby centered businessman known as Richard Lindon conceived an inflatable rubber ball as well as a metal hand pump in order to fill it. This permitted the measurement as well as variety on the rugby ball to become much more very easily regulated, and therefore had been the hog bladders easily altered. Absent were definitely the days of nearly round balls utilizing small, laced handles, and here to stay ended up the days on the rock as we just about all know it currently.

Presently there is at first just two positions in rugby: back and forward.

Since the a long time wore on, the actual quantity of guys transformed. South Africa is acknowledged using the introduction in the 3-4-1 formation, which offered a additional powerful platform compared to the previously tried-and-true 3-2-3 and 2-4-2 formations, and was for that reason in a position to maintain a more powerful push for any more time time frame. South Africa’s use from the new pack formation compelled the remainder with the rugby playing world to adjust, so that you can retain pace with South Africa being a globe energy.

The full-back was the following location to become named, there had been several of which. That was rapidly reduce to 1, while using additional two turning into “halfway backs,” or halfbacks abbreviated, as everyone knows them these days: the scrum 50 % along with the fly fifty percent. The centers and wingers developed because the quantity of participants inside the scrum disappeared to its existing lineup as well as the will need for much more ball handlers within the back-line started to be clear. Wales and New Zealand (Gary Stone‘s favourite!) are typically credited for significantly with the progression from the back-line as well as the passing recreation as it’s nowadays.

The umpire themselves came out like a pair, when it had been determined that there may be 2 umpires readily available regarding discussion when the 2 captains could not come to a choice regarding an infraction. Eventually, these referees retired on the sidelines to produce way for that umpire, to whom the crew captains abdicated decision making power. Even so, although, the umpire frequently consulted the referees and it was not until the turn on the century that he assumed overall manage with the recreation, using the referees turning into what’s identified right now since the contact judges. Interestingly, at initial glance the referee did not possess a whistle with that to assert this increased power, possessing as a substitute to yell with the high of his voice to deliver playing into a halt within the scenario of the infraction. It was New Zealand (woohoo – Gary Stone) that will, among quite a few other advancements, released the actual whistle to rugby as aspect and package on the referee’s equipment.

There are very few rugby players these days who draw a collective gasp from a stadium or put you on the edge of your seat.

As I have explained in my earlier post, Rugby’s problem, there is little magic left in the game so I thought I would pay homage to those players who still give us those moments which take our breath away.

Mike Catt

The wily old fox can still slip on the gloves of a puppet master when needed and pull the strings in London Irish’s back line. Although 38-years-old he still has the passion and willingness to throw passes many young cubs would never dream of.

The Catt Man

Martyn Williams

The ageless Welshman is the most competent footballer operating in international rugby. As comfortable at first receiver as he is at the bottom of a ruck this golden nugget’s secret to longevity is the joy he takes in creating.

Shane Williams

Many are too quick to condemn the Welsh wizard for his shortcomings. His mesmerising side-step and turn of pace will guarantee a few moments of magic in a game and put bums on seats.

Schalk Brits

Little known to us in the northern hemisphere, but this dynamo of a hooker is tearing up teams with his outrageous goose step and jinking footwork. His appetite for the loose is refreshing in a game populated by moronic body builders in the front row.

Carlos Spencer

A true magician. This Kiwi magic-man plays from the heart and sticks two fingers to stifling game plans. When he is on fire his artistry brings rugby as close to spontaneous perfection as possible.

Brian O’Driscoll

There are few plaudits left for this man to receive. Although he may have lost a yard of pace he still has the ability to unlock defences and his partnership with Jamie Roberts proved how truly effective he could be given the perfect foil.

Magic Team

Gethin Jenkins- great engine and willing in the loose (Grand Slam 2005)

Schalk Brits

The Beast- barreling runner with footwork to match (see him side stepping Stirling Mortlock)

Simon Shaw-last of the old school, still produces soft touches with his mighty hands.

Any suggestions?!

George Smith- past his best but a great rugby brain.

Martyn Williams

Sergio Parisse- carries Italy on his mighty shoulders every game. He can kick, pass, run. The complete player.

Justin Marshall- still has the energy to inspire a team from behind the scrum.

Carlos Spencer

Shane Williams

Regan King- the smoothest centre operating in the northern hemisphere. His talent is wasted at the Scarlets.

Brian O’Driscoll

David Lemi- mazy runner capable of running rings round an enitre team. Watch this try against Bath.

Maxime Medard- willing to attack from anywhere on the pitch, playing with an infectious joie de vivre

And here, for nostalgia, is the reason why we play rugby. Cliff Morgan, former player and commentator, said it: “If the greatest writer of the written word would have written that story no one would have believed it. That really was something.”

The Springboks racked up there third loss of the tour against Saracens rugby club at Wembley Stadium ,but it was Stuart Timmer who scored big time and stole the show.

Sorry if you thought this was a post about the actual rugby, but we are so kak right now that im not even gonna bother. Springboks lost 24-23 if that helps.

Stuart Timmer walked away with £250,000 during half time for kicking a rugby ball 30m and hitting the crossbar.

Stuart went old school and removed his shoes to kick in his socks. He was chosen out of 47 000 fans who entered the Sarries Crossbar Challenge.

24 year old Stuart still lives with folks and plays hooker for the Welwyn RFC fifth team, but its this little gem that almost brought tears to my eyes:

“‘This is the second best day of my life – the best day was when I lost my virginity” [Mail Online]

Love your work Stu.

Good times

RICHIE MC CAW’S headgear looks like a bathing cap – that was the first thought that crossed my mind when I watched Rugby for the first time. I found the game incredibly funny and terribly confusing as it didn’t make any sense to me at all.

ALL BLACK HAKA: Getting ready for 2011 (pic: ABC)

Rugby is not a big thing in my homecountry (although we actually have a national team, I recently found out), but after having lived in New Zealand for roughly a year now, I have watched a lot of rugby. It’s still a mystery to me – but I love watching it.

Like many Kiwis, I am all excited about New Zealand hosting the Rugby Worldcup in 2011.

This major sports event is also a great opportunity for the country to draw the world’s attention on it’s positive aspects and to attract tourists from all over the globe.

Tourism NZ’s motto in their marketing campaign is: GIVE IT 100% and they want rugby fans from all parts of the world to experience Rugby as its best when coming to New Zealand in two years time.

One major aspect of their marketing campaign is the giant white rugby ball that has already accompanied the All Blacks in 2008 when touring the UK and Ireland.

Next station on the iconic ball’s journey will be the Tokyo Tower in central Tokyo, where it will open between 28 Ocotber and 3 November 2009 and over 7000 visitors are expected to enter the ball.

This marketing strategy coincidences with the All Blacks vs. Wallabies testmatch, the Japan-NZ Business Council and the Japan-NZ Partnership Forum.

Sounds good so far – New Zealand is represented, the country gets attention, which -hopefully- will result in a boost for the tourism industry and subsequently also for the economy…

BUT – as the Dominion Post reports today - there is also a downside of the story: money.

STANDING TALL: The Eiffel Tower and the giant rugby ball (pic: STUFF)

When the giant ball promoted New Zealand during the Rugby Worldcup 2007 right next to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, it cost $907,000.

Eight days next to the Tower Bridge in London in 2008: $1.7 million.

Seven days in Tokyo… well, accoridng to the Dominion Post who use figures given to them by Tourism NZ, it would result in a daily sum which would be six times higher than the cost per day in Paris: $2.7 million – to taxpayers’ expenses.

The huge difference in costs in Paris and Tokyo partly comes from the rent for the venue of the ball: while Paris provided rent-free ground to erect the ball, Tokyo charges a rent of $95,000 as it was difficult to find a space big enough for the ball in downtown Tokyo.

I still haven’t decided what to do with the photos I’m taking for my 101 things challenge. Various people have suggested Flickr, which is ok but annoys me for 2 reasons. 1) They now force you to get a Yahoo account to log in to Flickr. Any what if I didn’t actually want a Yahoo account?! and 2) The free account only allows you to put up 200 photos. Which is fine, but I am clearly going to need to put up more than 200 photos for this challenge. Obviously I won’t be putting up all 50 every time, but I have 33 themes to get through! At the moment Flickr seems to be the best (read as only!) idea I have, but maybe I’ll come up with something.

In the meantime, since a few people have shown interest, I thought I would post one or two of the photos from this months challenge right here on Confuzzledom. Most of them aren’t particularly good, but you did ask… and now you have to suffer

My partner once read an article which said that children who never learn to crawl have a tendency to be clumsier later in life and lack co-ordination. This resonated with us somewhat- Ricky is now three and never learned to crawl. Well, he could do the “army crawl”, but never really got up on all fours. He didn’t do that “bum shuffle” that a lot of kids do either. He started walking at a perfectly normal age- a week shy of his first birthday- and developmentally is perfectly normal.

He is definitely a bit of a clutz though! When he’s running, he sometimes looks like Phoebe in that episode of Friends where she and Rachel go jogging together! He also has a tendency even now to fall quite a lot when running, mainly if he isn’t paying attention or isn’t looking where he’s going.

I’m sure this is perfectly normal for kids of his age, and will disappear as he gets older, but I wonder if he’ll always be a bit clumsy.

Bizarrely, if you throw a rugby ball at him, he can catch it and throw it back to you like a pro, and he can run with the ball very well. I think that Ian’s hopes of having fathered the second row for Ireland’s rugby team twenty years from now are still alive and well!

Yesterday afternoon I decided to give American Football a go, though I suddenly realised when I was

Yesterday afternoon I decided to give American Football a go, though I suddenly realised when I was waiting for the bus down to Preston Sports Arena, that I was the only girl there!

What made things worse was that I’m quite a small person and the guys taking part were anything but, so I was pretty nervous, especially when David Cox, who was taking the session with his friend Martin Fitzpatrick, asked who would like to get punched and who would like to do the punching?!

Luckily, none of this came into effect as we didn’t have the kit to play properly, but even so I felt nervous.

There were so many wanting to take part that the mini bus had to make two journeys, so as we waited for the second group to arrive, we did some throwing and catching practise.

I knew that the ball used was similar to a rugby ball, but I never realised that the stitching on the side was there for a reason. David used it as a guide to show us where you should put your fingers and showed us the right way to throw the ball, which is to not flick your wrist but to twist your body so that your whole wait goes into it.

This was easier said than done for me, but I managed to get it to go about 5-10 metres, unlike the others who were easily throwing 10 metres plus. However, I did realise that I was as good as the others at catching, so that gave me some hope.

After being joined by the others and doing a quick warm up session, we broke into two groups and started learning some skills. The first few were all variations of each other, but basically it involved running whatever distance the thrower called changing direction and then catching the ball while running to make yourself parallel with the thrower.

Some of the variations included turning and running either to or away from the thrower and stopping and catching the ball. Again, I was better catching than I was throwing, but I gave it my best shot even after I ended up getting hit in the cheek by a ball. Someone afterwards said it looked nasty and it was, not that I was going to admit it but I couldn’t feel my cheek for 5 minutes afterwards!

To make things a bit trickier, we then learnt how to defend. We started off by doing some quick back peddling (running backwards, which is a skill in itself if you can’t keep your balance), before putting this into practise by trying to stop our mark from catching the ball.

We went on to learn how to cover the ball once we had it and this was what I was best at. Apparently, in American Football whenever someone wants to tackle you they will try to push your kit upwards so that it goes into your neck (trust me the game isn’t as dangerous as it sounds), so when you get the ball you have to keep low so they can’t get you.

My height was an advantage for this because I’m only 5’ 2” when I stand up straight, so when I ducked down there wasn’t much of me to tackle!

Unfortunately, the next stage was learning how to tackle, this wasn’t quite so good. You see when you have big guys coming up to you it’s daunting enough and knowing that you have to stop them doesn’t help. I tried my best but I might as well as been picked up and moved out the way!

To finish off we had a mini game of tag American Football. I was pleased it was tag, because that made it feel a bit safer!

To be honest most of the game seem to flash by, but the aim is to move the ball up the field to the 10-yard mark, using four or more men. Sounds easy? Trust me, it’s not, but I must admit I got involved.

It seemed to me that because I was a girl, nobody wanted to mark me. Whether they thought I wasn’t a risk or not, I don’t know, but I’m not complaining because it meant that I could catch the ball easily. Unfortunately, when I did, I kind of panicked having everyone coming towards me and forgot that all they needed to get was my tags, but I did manage to gain about a foot for our team and I was congratulated. I’ve just got to remember to run next time.

I personally really enjoyed it and the good news for us girls is that it’s a mixed league.

David and Martin wanted to do this event in the hope that people would want to make a team, as the university doesn’t already have one and I must say it looks promising as a lot of guys turned up and they all seemed keen on doing it again at the end of the session, so keep an ear out for more news in the future.

An interview with the lads will be up on this site soon but for now, here’s the photos:
