A celebrity is a famous person. A famous person is one who has a widespread reputation usually of a favorable nature. A star is a person who is celebrated or distinguished in some art, profession, or other field… So – some may ask – how is it that an increasing number of “celebrities”, who possess no discernable talent, manage to obtain a lavish lifestyle of the rich and famous? Millions of people who are even vaguely familiar with pop culture are perplexed by the heightened celebrity status bestowed upon those whose fame stems from activities once considered obscure, vulgar, or unflinchingly trifling – and completely devoid of what is commonly referred to as talent.

One wonders if 25 years ago or more, talent agencies would’ve considered taking on clients who offered no on-screen talent or training whatsoever, instead, relying on tawdry marketing strategies to ensure notoriety. For example, game shows contestants stayed in their respective lanes, and the only place you may find a former contestant was in your local mall or supermarket. Now, these contestants and other ‘non-scripted’ show participants seek to use their 15 minutes as a portal to create a whole freakin’ hour.

Sex sells for men and women alike, but for 99% of female celebs, sex appeal has always been paramount. Upon reflection however, those whose roots originated in (and failed to deviate from) X-rated activities, thrived in their own genre. Nowadays, it appears as though the lines are blurred, and women who would’ve reigned freely within the confines of the adult entertainment world are able to carve out tenuous careers in the mainstream. On the other end of the spectrum exist “the awkward” bunch who are willing to exploit their own eccentricities for the sake of prolonged media attention.

What fuels this phenomenon? Is it an insatiable need for attention? The media’s habit of nurturing the sensational rather than the substantive? The jury is still out on this convoluted debate. So we took a survey, which lists alleged “no talent” notables that receive far too much air time. Each of the celebs listed below falls under one or more of the following categories: pornographic; general opportunist; nepotism; gimmick. Take a guess as to who’s who in each category:

Amber Rose
Karrine Steffans
The Kardashian Sisters
Paris Hilton
Nicole Richie
Kevin Federline
Most popular reality show contestants
All Flavor of Love contestants
Nick Cannon
Teyana Taylor
Rumer Willis

The findings of the survey were intended to uncover the perspectives of concerned readers, and are by no means presented as irrefutable facts. As an online magazine, we are aware that new media is a major factor in the rise of the 15 minute famous set. The bigger issue at hand is the long-term impact this new trend will have on our society. What happens when newscasts become gossip – or scandal trumps talent and cheapness obliterates creativity? For starters, it may manifest in two media-crazed parents staging a hoax involving their missing son weather balloon…

No matter how you slice it, the fact is that a good deal of these so called ‘skill-free’ stars not only permeate the media, but have an avid fan base to boot. At the end of the day, that may be all it takes to be on top. Either that or one damn good publicist.

Be sure to check out The CW’s site for all the new video content this week.

Last night’s One Tree Hill (2.3 million viewers) and Gossip Girl (2.0 million viewers rounded up) each had a decent drop in the ratings compared to last week. Gossip Girl technically didn’t even cross 2 million (again, I rounded up), tying for a season-low.

I will be interviewing Lee Norris (Mouth, One Tree Hill) later this week. Since I’ve already interviewed him, I figured this time I would use reader questions. Please comment with your question by Thursday Friday morning. I cannot promise it will be asked but I’ll do my best!

The new One Tree Hill Connection podcast features an interview with OTH writer Terrence Coli.

I love this video interview with Sophia Bush (Brooke, One Tree Hill), where she adamantly states she isn’t on Twitter. As you’ve seen in my Twitter Directory, there are tons of fake Sophias out there. Frustrating!

Hilarie Burton (Peyton, One Tree Hill) recorded a message on SoGoPro.

If you haven’t seen Brett Claywell (Tim, One Tree Hill) on One Life to Live, Perez Hilton actually posted a clip.

In a Gossip Girl recap by the L.A. Times, both Andrea (Gabrielle Carteris, Beverly Hills 90210) and Joey (Katie Holmes, Dawson’s Creek) are compared to Vanessa (Jessica Szhor, Gossip Girl).

If you missed the short clip of the video for “Somebody to Love” by Leighton Meester (Blair, Gossip Girl), which aired during GG last night, E! Online posted it.

The Parents Television Council has sent a letter urging CW affiliates not to air next week’s episode, which will feature the reported threesome. Seems a little preemptive (no pun intended) to me. I can’t imagine the episode being vulgar enough to warrant this. I imagine, like the gay kiss, it will be such a nothing thing and is really more about getting publicity and media attention (in which case, it worked). But I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

Ausiello has a lot more spoiler-filled details on the Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes, 90210) / Gia (Rumer Willis, 90210) storyline.

Kellan Lutz (George, 90210) and Nikki Reed (Sadie, The O.C.) are also featured in the Nov. issue of Nylon.

Rumer Willis landed a guest role in ‘90210′ in which she has been making appearances for the past few episodes. So far the actress has only been given a handful of lines, but that is soon to change when her character Gia embarks on a relationship with teenage mother Adrianna, played by Jessica Lowndes, in a forthcoming storyline on the US TV show.

The show’s executive producer Rebecca Sinclair said: “This isn’t a fling. We’re coming at this relationship from a genuine place and not going, ‘Let’s do a titillating story that will grab some promotion.’

“This is a real aspect of teenager life that’s interesting. And there’s been a real void in the 90210 universe in terms of gay and bisexual characters.”

After some deliberating (I had a lot of time to kill), I came up with this list of 11 people I’d like to serve with and why:

Sorority Row (2009) Running Time: 101 Minutes Rated: R Going against all odds here, I say its quit

Sorority Row (2009)

Running Time: 101 Minutes

Rated: R

Going against all odds here, I say its quite entertaining when hanging around the idea that sorority girls are getting humped and slashed through every course of this film. Take a side note that this is just the joke of a observation. Like many slasher flicks, there are twists, sex, and blood. All three elements necessary to fondle the crowd in excitement. Or at least keep them busy enough from looking at their cellphones or making out with their pals. In all regards it does but many horror “tricks” appear in this film like a bag of halloween candy just waiting for a 8 yr old to snatch it all out. It sticks and can sometimes leave you feeling stupid. Like “did I fall for that?”. And the answer is, yes you did.

Like every “cool” slasher flick, this film needs hot 20 yr old women who can scream and relatively act. A lot of them are well known in the teen circle. Cassidy(Briana Evigan), Jessica(Leah Pipes), Ellie(Rumer Willis), Claire(Jamie Chung), and Charlene Chugs(Margo harshman) are all sorority sisters in the Theta Pi home. All bimbos who have dudes who are probably related to Brett Novak are playing a prank. One that requires Megan(Audrina patridge) to play dead. The prank was supposed to scare the crap out of Garret(Matt O Leary). Well it did as you can see him cry his way in the car while the girls sneakingly laugh at him. The prank was a backstab at Garret who supposingly cheated on Megan. That seems a little to far girls…but then, thats what college girls do.

Things obviously go wrong as the mine scene takes the form of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Hiding the body because Garret accidently killed her with the tire iron. And now the sisters take a hypocritical oath of not telling anyone and drops the body in a well. Forward months later when its graduation and back to more wild college parties. And then a mysterious text message leads to a number of kills and everything you seem to left behind becomes a moral dilemma and every girl whimpers as the alpha female tries to calm them down with serious pep talks about pro life. But not even that could save them. Right…because this is a slasher flick and people have to die. Apparently strangers feel the need to kill people responsible of murdering their own friend. You would at least think its Megans sister or father but trust me, a little bomb in the end will surley knock you off course.

The relationship between the sisters are kinda awkward in length and questionable in honesty. One is never gonna get laid, the other refuses to let things go, and one just wants to move on. All of them disagree till blood spills and then they have to work together like real sisters. Shouldnt they just be reasonable? No because this becomes a second conflict. One that is strong enough to create foolhardy women in the process. Where each of them has ideas and slowly walks away from the group to their inevitable end. And apparently Stewart Hendler(Director Of Sorority Row) handles it perfectly just like how Jim Gillespie did with I Know What You Did Last Summer. A moment of applause but not quite there yet because its not that original anymore. That seems to be the focus point for every slasher flick. Where friends betray or have a sense of distrust. But nevertheless, it worked.

Everything is formulatic but the kills, I have to say took a new step forward. The shower scene is among my favorites. Not because I saw nipples but a very interesting sequence where the killer impales the women into the wall with a bladed tire iron. And its pace works for it as well. Not a whole lot went wrong with this film. Its just the expiration date of every element in this film. They are all outdated and used. Its like wearing something from Goodwill. Its nice and firm but it gets icthy sooner or later and bleach suddenly destroys it. But what bothers me a lot is some of the scenes where they just seem a little out of line or its characters to stupid to notice. Like how at one point they thought a dead women was the killer. Thats all you need to know. Seems pointless and the girls just seem a littler dumber as the movie quickly ends into caches of cliches. Realism is not respected. Or is it true that every women when in distress, just acts stupid. But hey its a movie and all of these girls probably didnt know what they were doing.

Moderately entertaining for horror lovers and hot enough(Lot Of Women) for everyone else.

Though you kinda wonder…why didnt Garret just checked the girls pulse…..hmmmmmmm.

2.5/5

During what’s known as “sweeps period,” TV shows usually pull out all the stops–storylines come to a head, shocking things are revealed and famous actors drop by for cameos.

What struck me as interesting recently is that The CW isn’t restricting itself to those time periods.

With Tyra Banks and Hilary Duff appearing on Gossip Girl this week, and Rumer Willis’ recurring role on 90210, I started thinking about stunt casting on our other shows.

For the next few days, I’ll count down the ten most memorable guest-stars and cameos from all of the teen dramas.

To kick things off, here are the 3 mentioned above. I’m not including them because they are the most recent but because I really do believe they deserve a spot on the this most memorable list.

October is here, and with it comes a flurry of new horror releases. There has been a shitty landslid

October is here, and with it comes a flurry of new horror releases. There has been a shitty landslide of scary cinema this season, ranging from the bad (Sorority Row – featuring the dramatic trinity of Rumer Willis, Audrina from The Hills and Princess Leia) to the shining yet cripplingly flawed (Rob Zombie’s horribly uneven Halloween II). But just in time for the beginning of the month comes two ridiculous gems, both as different as could be.

The first is major studio gorefest Zombieland, where great comedic timing sent the cult flick to the top of the box office last weekend. Everything about the movie is gratuitous, from the title to perpetually dazed superhero in Woody Harrelson. Along with little Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone (who got hot – how did that happen?) and 13-year-old Abigail Breslin (who got hot – how did that happen?), the four try to survive a joyous zombie landscape. But there is perhaps no greater spark in the film than (SPOILER!!!!!!)…seeing Bill Murray play himself, smoke a bunch of pot with the gang and recreate crucial Ghostbusters scenes with dustbuster vacuums. And then he gets shot and killed. Amazing. (END SPOILER!!!!!!)

The other must-see is in limited release, made for about $11,000 and virtually free of any violence. That said, Paranormal Activity is one of the scariest movies that PopNauseam has ever seen. The less you know the better, but the basic setup is that a young couple sets up a video camera to document spooky occurrences in their house. It is a very simple premise that leaves other handheld-based features (The Blair Witch Project, Quarantine, Cloverfield, etc.) in the dust with a brilliant sense of tone and dread . See it in a packed theater, where you can hear the collective gasps of hundreds drawing a breath at the same time. And if you’re anything like us, you will not be able to sleep the night after as you will be convinced that your own crib has it out for you.

While the feminist in me gets slightly annoyed at the number of Hollywood actresses who use lesbian storylines to get publicity and further their careers, the lesbian in me could never get enough of seeing two hot girls getting it on, especially when one of those girls is Hayden Panettiere. In an interview with the Daily Star, Hayden revealed it was her idea to include a lesbian storyline in the next season of Heroes. She said she just “kinda threw it out there..” when writers for the show began discussing relationship possibilities for her character. She said, “I was like, ‘Can I just be with a girl or something…? Let’s do that.’” The new relationship, which will see Hayden’s character, Claire Bennet, get involved with her college roommate, Madeleine Zima, might just be the extra inspiration I need to actually start watching the show.

And in other straight-star-can’t-wait-to-go-lezbo news, The Sun reports that 21 year-old Rumer Willis, daughter of Bruce and Demi, has said she’s ‘ready and waiting’ to get hot and heavy with another girl.. on TV of course. Rumer currently has a role on teen drama Beverly Hills 90210 playing a lesbian journalist, and she says she is ready to get steamy. “I don’t know when it’s going to happen. I’m waiting to find out. I’m ready and waiting, should I get the call for action,” she said.

Directed by – Stewart Hendler

Written by – Josh Stolberg, Pete Goldfinger, Mark Rosman

Starring – Adam Berry, Briana Evigan, Margo Harshman, Rumer Willis, Jamie Chung, Leah Pipes, Audrina Patridge, Matt O’Leary, Julian Morris, Debra Gordon, Carrie Fisher, Caroline D’Amore, Matt Lanter, Maxx Hennard, Ken Bolden, Rick Applegate, Deja Kreutzberg, Nicole Moore, Justine Wachsberger, Natalia Dove, Marlee Fritz, Anna McGhee

What’s there to say about another teen slasher flick? Well in the case of Sorority Row, pretty much nothing. Attractive people, mysterious killer, lots of death. That sums it up.

As far as slasher flicks, it’s not that bad. I’m just really tired of watching them. None of them try to steer even slightly away from the genre stereotypes and this one suffers from an ending that isn’t expected but isn’t shocking either. The best part of the flick is the few minutes that Carrie Fisher is in it, brandishing a shotgun and spouting curse words on her hunt for the killer. Princess Leia has a salty mouth!

This is not the way to throw a foam party!

I didn’t expect much from this film and, of course, wasn’t given much in the end anyway. When people first start dying I kinda got my hopes up. The first couple of deaths were pretty creative but then it went right back to the same old stuff. I guess getting stabbed with a sharp tire iron instead of a machete could be a slight improvement but just not enough.

The movie smacks of ripping off I Know What You Did Last Summer. Someone gets killed by accident, the group covers it up and then someone sends them a text letting them know they’re out to get even. When the end hits and the killer is revealed it seemed as if they just randomly picked someone and said ‘Make them the killer’ without any thought about it. I’m not really sure what else to say about this one. HAHA That’s kinda sad but that’s how it is. Don’t waste your money on this one. The deaths aren’t that great and the story is tired. Instead of seeing it, just enjoy this next pic. See, I’m looking out for your best interests!

Theta Pi must die!

Pretty good tagline, huh? “Sorority Row,” a remake/update of 1983’s superb “The House On Sorority Row,” does indeed boast a couple of good “zingers” in its “viral” and standard marketing campaigns, the other being “Sisterhood Is Forever.” They’re direct, to the point, and easy to remember. Enough to pique your interest. But is that interest ultimately rewarded?

The cast is a testament to the continuing power of nepotism in Hollywood, featuring as it does Rumer Willis (Bruce and Demi’s kid) and Briana Evigan (daughter of Greg, still best remembered as title character B.J. McKay in TV’s “B.J. And The Bear”) among its bevy of young almost-starlets. They each out in good turns as basket-case Ellie and quasi-hero Cassidy, respectively, and are the only two sisters among a group of five members of the exclusive Theta Pi sorority who share a deadly secret between them to show any sort of remorse for the part they played in a deadly prank gone wrong that left one of their other members at the bottom of a disused mine shaft.

The initial premise of accidentally killing their friend while she’s pretending to be dead is clever enough and fleshed out in much more detail than it was in the original, but in all fairness this remake suffers from some of the same flaws that so many previous entries in the horror classic do-over sweepstakes do : it’s more stylized than it is stylish, it’s trying overly-hard to be “contemporary” and “relevant” while remaining ostensibly true to its “source material,” and has an unfortunate tendency to over-explain things just in case its audience leans too heavily toward the moronic —for instance, we can see with our own two eyes that the killer is using a tricked-out tire iron, there’s really no need for dialogue exposition to confirm that fact, and while we’re at it, there’s no need to keep reminding us of the fact that Megan, the unfortunate victim in question, can’t possible be alive—we know that, too, and when the sisters who dumped her and some of their friends start getting killed off one-by-one on the night of their college graduation, the movie doesn’t even try particularly hard to sell us on the idea that it could be her back from the grave to exact vengeance, so why keep mentioning it as a possibility?

The real identity of the killer is the main source of intrigue here, and while some of the “red herrings” along the way are pretty blatantly absurd (Carrie Fisher as the stereotypical drunk house mother, for instance, never seems plausible as the face beneath the murderer’s graduation gown hood, but they sure do try to sell us on the idea for a little while), it’s nevertheless an interesting enough little mystery, and when the raging psychopath is finally revealed, to give credit where it’s due, it actually is fairly surprising.

The rest of the principal cast—Leah Pipes as super-bitch Jessica, Jamie Chung as perpetually-cheated-on Claire, and Margo Harshman as drunken uber-slut Chugs—all do well enough with their roles, and director Stewart Hendler keeps things moving at a pretty brisk and at times even suspenseful clip. No one here has anything to be ashamed of, that’s for sure.

But then, there’s nothing that particularly sets this film apart from the passel of teen- and twenty-something-horror out there. It’s involving enough for about 100 minutes, but in no way especially memorable, yet alone groundbreaking. You won’t reflect on it much later, nor be dying to rent it on DVD. It all fades from memory pretty quickly.

It’s not bad, that’s for certain, but it never rises above the level of “acceptably average,” so while your host isn’t willing to go so far as to say you should give this movie a pass, the fact is that you won’t be missing a whole lot if you don’t see it, especially since there’s sure to be something else more or less exactly like it that comes along within the next few weeks.

The Wife: Remember how we never saw Liam’s parents last season? Well, let me just say that the fact

The Wife:

Remember how we never saw Liam’s parents last season? Well, let me just say that the fact that he has a mother and stepfather shocked the hell out of me. The moment his mother appeared on screen, I was like, “Who the fuck is that?” And then to see his stepfather walk into the scene, none other than recently deceased Dr. Bowman from The Secret Life of the American Teenager, well, that was a treat. A treat because this is what I wrote in my notes:

“Dr. Bowman! You shouldn’t be alive! You’re dead! You died a horrible death because Grace had incredible sex!”

Man, if you guys aren’t watching Secret Life, you are missing out on some hilarious stuff.

For once, Liam’s parents seem to be taking an interest in his life, trying to guide him better after his summer at “Wilderness Camp,” which, frankly, sounds like one of those places that tries to “rehabilitate” gay kids. (That’s exactly the kind of place I’d send a kid who managed to break into my plastic surgery practice and steal my patients credit cards, somehow.) Their presence in his life means, essentially, that Jen Clark can manipulate them info forcing Liam to stay away from Naomi, should he ever decide to tell her that it was Jen he slept with, not Annie.

Listen, it doesn't matter what you did or didn't do. I'm going to make your life hell because I'm a sociopath.

Naomi spends most of the episode flirting with the idea of sending out a naked picture of Annie, copied from the phone of that drunk douche she hooked up with last week, and, therefore, flirting with geeks to anonymously achieve that end. When Navid, Silver and Adriana hear the rumor that someone has a naked picture of Annie, they try to warn her and her brother. Dixon doesn’t really give a shit what happens to Annie anymore because her depression spiral its hurting her whole family, but Silver genuinely tries to help her. Annie even goes so far as to admit that she slept with Liam just to convince Naomi not to send the picture. This works to plant a seed of doubt into Naomi’s mind, until manipulative sister Jen, after explaining why she’s using Ryan Matthews to make it appear that she’s not a golddigger and therefore more easily snag a billionaire, recalls a similar situation about their father’s affairs and how their mother should have believed the circumstantial evidence because it ended up being true. Then and there, Naomi decides to send the text, ruining Annie’s life even further.

I’ve seen American Teen. I know that sexting is no joke and it really does ruin people’s lives. I can’t help but feel badly for Annie. She might be able to overcome the sexting scandal if the hit-and-run weren’t also looming over her head. By the way, what a great way to drive the mess that is Annie’s life home by airing Navid’s contentious interview with newcomer Teddy Montgomery just as Annie finds out about the sext. In this interview, which was laden with provocative questions simply because Navid feels threatened by the fact that Teddy was the first guy Adriana slept with, Navid asks Teddy if anything bad has ever happened to him, and he says that he saw a dead homeless man last June on Mulholland, killed by a hit-and-run driver. BOOM! That, my friends, is dramatic tension.

Stray thoughts:

I clearly didn’t pay much mind to the Silver-Dixon breakup in this episode. But poor Silver. Her friends are giving her bad advice, and Dixon is being a douche.

Hi there, Rumer Willis! Cute black cardi!

Wow, that’s so not the house Naomi bought last year!

Girls double-talk like Chinese food. I’m not going to explain that any further.

Was it just me, or did anyone else think of Star Trek when watching the surf team tryouts? Nobody wears such brightly colored rash guards. Liam, Teddy and Dixon all looked like they were on the bridge of the Enterprise in those things. And, clearly, Dixon, with his new flattop, would be Geordi LaForge. Am I right, kids?

Sorority Row So, Wa-wa and I have been zero for… a lot. But we still love scary/horror/slashe

Sorority Row

So, Wa-wa and I have been zero for… a lot. But we still love scary/horror/slasher movies and decided to give this one a try. And finally our losing streak was broken.

Now, I’m not saying that this was the best slasher film ever – but it is smarter than most. You will love to hate Jessica, the leader of the pack. She is a bitch with a capital B, but she steals the show with the best lines.

You will hate (I think) Rumer Willis’ character – I was rooting for her to be killed off right away!! She is soooo annoying. If this is any indication as to how Ms. Willis is as an actor, her career will tank faster than…well, Cybil Shepherd’s.

For you, Ron, there are a couple of shots of boobies, but otherwise, no nudity or sex to speak of.

It was obvious who the killer was right away – although they try to throw you off by suggesting others. Go with your gut and you’ll have it figured out.

Good dialogue, better than average storyline, decent acting. I would watch it again.

Black, Jack – The frenetic comedian from School of Rock and Tenacious D is spotted tootling around NYC carrying a giant axe. Perhaps he was paying a visit to his agent for recommending he star in Year One.

Brown, Dan – The super-best-selling author of The Da Vinci Code has just released his new book, “The Lost Symbol.” Without even reading it, you can expect atrocious, completely unnatural dialogue; a ridiculously mulleted, impossibly resourceful Indiana Jones clone; and mind-bender puzzles you might find by googling “folded $20 bill.”

Fox, Megan – It looks like our TBTS favorite once again generated headlines when she compared Transformers director Michael Bay, on set at least, to Hitler. In defense of Bay, three anonymous Transformers crew members wrote a lengthy response absolutely lambasting Fox. Bay himself posted a short piece trying to defuse the situation. As of today, no rebuttal from Fox. Check out the link; it’s worth the read. This one’s only going to get better.

Hilton, Paris — Socialite, celebutante, debutite, and socialante Paris Hilton had the following quote considered something enough to be entered into the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations: “Dress cute wherever you go, life is too short to blend in.” Since Paris’ lofty observation got in, next year I can expect to have accepted my exclamations “%$#!^” and “God, I swear to you I’ll never drink again if you just get me through this” after a night of whiskey shots at McCarthy’s. See you at the awards ceremony!

VH1, Reality TV Shows On – Insiders at VH1 say that, after one of their reality show contestants (Ryan Jenkins) murdered his wife (Jasmine Fiore), they’ll “chill on the crazies” for a while by running shows featuring more celebrities and fewer random people. To anyone who has ever watched reality TV, especially VH1 programming, showcasing more celebrities will not achieve their goal of “chilling on the crazies.”

Willis, Rumer – The 21-year-old daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore tells People magazine that she celebrated her 16th birthday at Ashton Kutcher’s place, who at the time was 26. It must have been weird to have to say, “no, future stepdad in my same age cohort, I will not shotgun a beer with you.”

Paint by numbers horror is tiresome, but horror movies should work within the genre. When they color

Paint by numbers horror is tiresome, but horror movies should work within the genre. When they color too far outside the lines fans get lost. Sorority Row has all of the necessary elements to make it a typical slasher flick but at the same time tries to put a fresh coat of primer on the genre in an effort to find a happy medium between those two alternatives. While the film never quite reaches that middle ground, it sure provides a damn good time while trying to find it.
