This week’s issue of Newsweek magazine shows former Governor Sarah Palin on the cover in littl

This week’s issue of Newsweek magazine shows former Governor Sarah Palin on the cover in little black running shorts. It reused a picture from Runner’s World magazine where she was proudly posing as a celebrity who runs. Now people on the left use this picture to mock her. And people on the right say that using this picture is sexist. And everybody, left and right, is calling it a cheap shot, inappropriate, disrespectful. I tried all week to make sense of the reaction but I don’t get it. How can an image she herself authorized for publication while in office serving as governor, become negative three months later, now that she is self-employed? I think Sarah Palin is pretty. I think she looks great in a suit and in a running outfit. I think it is admirable that she is a runner. And I suspect she knows it. It is a proven tactic that politicians use to make us runners forget about politics for a second and praise them for their athleticism. It works magic on me — I have a soft spot for running people. Last winter former Governor Rod Blagojevich went out for a run on the snowy streets of Chicago, wearing black leggings. For a second, I shifted my focus away from his hairy messes all the way down to his pants. And I was in awe when I learned that President Bush was running three miles every day and that he stopped eating dessert. For a second, I was thinking about a determined runner, not about a war-time president who has time to run a 3-miler every day. If Newsweek intended that I look at Palin’s picture and feel antipathy, then they failed. Perhaps much like doctors can treat nudity asexually, I can see muscles and discipline where the critics see naked legs. The only statement I see in this picture is about her running ability. The woman can run!

I’m thinking of doing a half marathon. I’ve never done one before. Before this year I

I’m thinking of doing a half marathon. I’ve never done one before. Before this year I’d never even run a 5K but as of December 31, 2009, I will have done:

4 5K’s – I walked the first one in June due to my knees, ran the second in August in 27:01, and have two more between now and the end of the year.

2 sprint triathlons – August and October

1 10K – October

I had so much fun with the 10K distance that I decided within several days of that race to try a half marathon. I know a couple of people who are planning to do the Shamrock race in March so that’s what I’m shooting for. Now I just need to get up the courage to enter before it fills up.

I used the Runner’s World SmartCoach tool to train for my 10K. Due to unforeseen circumstances I didn’t finish it completely but it got me far enough to be able to race within 1 minute of the time it had estimated. Not bad! I’m going to use it again to train for this half mary knowing that things probably won’t go exactly according to plan but it should get me close enough.

I’d love to train harder than this but from experience I’ve learned I need to go as easy as possible on my joints. I’ve used easy settings for this plan (currently training 6-10 miles per week, how hard to train: moderate) and will be using my usual walk breaks during both the training and the race.

As i pack my things every time i go on out-of-town trips, i always put my Training Journal/Log into my carry on bag. It’s a Runners World training journal given to me by running buddy June early this year. Ever since i had it, it has always accompanied me everywhere i go and enabled me to record all my running sessions and keep track of the place, time, distance as well as personal notes on how i felt during the runs.

I’m not a stickler for any training routine nor do i have any existing training program to prepare me for a race. But when i made my comeback to running last year, my objective was just to go out and run–if i felt good, i would run farther than planned and if i felt sluggish, i would just go for an easy, short jog. I never wanted any one workout to count that much as i wanted my running to simply mirror the broader picture of my experiences; that there will be good days and the not so good others.

However, as my runs intensified and the races were getting to be weekly rituals, the need to improve was inevitable. Having a data of your daily runs, you’re able to analyze the type of workouts you do, how you physically felt about these workouts and this can give you some gauge on what to improve and tell you when to back off to avoid overused injuries.

I’ve always believed that the key to successful training is to understand the progress and failures of your every workout and to strike the right balance. Coming home from every workout, i always look forward to getting myself to sit, open my journal and write all details and experiences of the just concluded run, whether it’s positive or negative.

There are lessons learned in every run. There was a new route i took somewhere in South Triangle and passed a quiet street not knowing that there were dogs ready to pounce on me. In my training log, i would write: “Do not ever run on this street again!” On some occasions, i would wonder what i ate the day before that caused me to take a No. 2 on an abandoned building! And i’m still looking for that vendor who sold me a rice cake somewhere Quezon Ave which i ate after my 2nd hour of running which gave me some extra boost of energy to complete another hour of running!

Any kind of information helps you adjust on your preparations and workouts so you can track what’s best for your body. The journal may also help you see the “red signal”: it acts as a sounding board and helps you avoid some of the land mines of training and racing.

With all these information at the palm of your hands, a journal can do wonders to enhance your running. Firstly, it has given me motivation to run farther, faster and set for myself reasonable and attainable goals. More importantly, it has given me inspiration–setting back the calendar on my progress when i was just starting again to where i am at present, take stock on the weight i’ve lost so far, the generally good health i have, the new energy it has given me and the improved times (though modest) i have achieved while running with others.

See you at the races!

It’d be one thing if she posed for Newsweek in this get-up, but the backstory is that magazine bought the picture from a stock agency that reps the photographer who did a photo shoot for the August, 2009 issue of Runner’s World (which seems to be asserting that it has a one-year exclusive on the photo so there may be an actual lawsuit from this). I’m not sure I would have been smart enough, were I staffing the shoot, to have asked the photographer, “And, what’s the rights agreement for these photos between you and Runner’s World?”

And, most of the world, not being media sophisticates like your average SRC reader, will probably look at the cover and – not unreasonably – assume that Ms. Palin knew exactly what she was doing and for which publication.

Newsweek maintains that picture is entirely consistent with their regular practices. As Editor Jon Meacham wrote:

“We chose the most interesting image available to us to illustrate the theme of the cover, which is what we always try to do. We apply the same test to photographs of any public figure, male or female: does the image convey what we are saying? That is a gender-neutral standard.”

This is the most interesting image of Sarah Palin available? I’m having trouble believing that.

Let me start by showing you the “official response” to this from Palin.

“The choice of photo for the cover of this week’s Newsweek is unfortunate. When it comes to Sarah Palin, this ‘news’ magazine has relished focusing on the irrelevant rather than the relevant,” she wrote on her fan page, adding, “The out-of-context Newsweek approach is sexist and oh-so-expected by now.” (Full Article)

What is unfortunate for Sarah is the fact that she thought this photo shoot was something that is…OK…for an American candidate, especially in light of the the “VALIDITY FACTOR” that is in play these days. She told Barbara Walters that the photo on the cover was “a wee bit degrading.” OMG! SHE POSED FOR THE PICTURE BEFORE IT WAS PRINTED!

Maybe her realization that that photo is a bad idea coming too late is an indication of her decision making skills??????

WAIT, put your pitch forks away….let me explain further.

Is it wrong for a male/female political figure to pose for Runners World in 8″ shorts. NO. Does it increase her visibility in the country? YES. Is it looked on favorably by the country in terms of what we expect our politicians to be? NO. Is that my fault. NO. Well, maybe.

Maybe it is all our faults that Sarah Palin thinks that Runner’s World photo shoots, in attire that wouldn’t meet the dress code in her own fund raisers, is what she needs to do to really gain market share and appeal to all the “Joe Six-Packs” and “Hockey Moms” out there.

This part is to Sarah Palin. Just another thought about your exposure issue

AARP: The Magizine has roughly 24 million (UNREAL) copies going out every month. Whereas Runner’s World has approximately 650k copies (ITS NO AARP) every month in distribution. Lets be honest you need to appeal to your base and they read AARP not Runner’s World.

EVEN I KNEW THAT

Sarah Palin Newsweek Cover This woman has to be the most hypocritical human being on the planet. Not

Sarah Palin Newsweek Cover

This woman has to be the most hypocritical human being on the planet. Not only is she having trouble with all her lies, but can’t resist making something out of nothing just to make sure her name stays in the news.

I guess that’s even more important now since she has a book out and sales may turn out to be quite disappointing.

Over the past summer Sarah Palin did an interview with Runners World about her love of running. She also took the time to pose for several photographs for the photographer Brian Adams (not that Brian Adams). In fact she posed for a total of 47 different photos for Mr. Adams. None appear to be a serious photos, minus three which of course feature Trig, but the remaining 44……. cheesecakes. Sarah bent over stretching, Sarah leg hiked up stretching and flashing a little smile, Sarah in a yoga pose, you get the idea. Six feature Sarah Palin desigrating the American Flag similiar to the one used by Newsweek.

So this week’s issue of Newsweek used one of the photos featured in the Runners World spread with the caption ‘How Do You Solve A Problem Like Sarah?’ and of course Sarah has found something else to use on her Majical Victim Tour as another victimization of poor Sarah Palin. But I say she should be grateful they at least used the ones with the photoshopped legs instead of using the original, wouldn’t you?

Sarah responded via her campaign site Facebook:

The choice of photo for the cover of this week’s Newsweek is unfortunate. When it comes to Sarah Palin, this “news” magazine has relished focusing on the irrelevant rather than the relevant. The Runner’s World magazine one-page profile for which this photo was taken was all about health and fitness – a subject to which I am devoted and which is critically important to this nation. The out-of-context Newsweek approach is sexist and oh-so-expected by now. If anyone can learn anything from it: it shows why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, gender, or color of skin. The media will do anything to draw attention – even if out of context.

Poor Sarah…………….the media she speaks of that’s willing to do anything to draw attention is the same media that’s she’s attempting to use and confuse with all of her contradicting stories and lies.

As we expected, but certainly not as Sarah expected Newsweek has responded.

This week, to coincide with the release of Sarah Palin’s book Going Rogue, Newsweek’s editors decided to print two essays (one by Evan Thomas, the other by Christopher Hitchens) about the former Alaska governor and have her image grace our cover. The photo chosen was from a shoot Palin had participated in for Runner’s World magazine.

To note that choosing that particular photograph has ruffled a few feathers is perhaps an understatement. Palin denounced it—and us—to her million-strong Facebook following last night. “The choice of photo for the cover of this week’s Newsweek is unfortunate. When it comes to Sarah Palin, this ‘news’ magazine has relished focusing on the irrelevant rather than the relevant,” she wrote on her fan page, adding, “The out-of-context Newsweek approach is sexist and oh-so-expected by now.” She also told ABC’s Barbara Walters that she found the cover “a wee bit degrading.” Others, like CBN’s David Brody, said our cover was a new low: “biased and sexist at the same time.”

Today, Newsweek’s Editor Jon Meacham has responded to critics. “We chose the most interesting image available to us to illustrate the theme of the cover, which is what we always try to do,” Meacham said. “We apply the same test to photographs of any public figure, male or female: does the image convey what we are saying? That is a gender-neutral standard.”

Try again Sarah!

Gov. Sarah Palin is featured on the cover of Newsweek Magazine this week, prompting controversy for the picture the magazine selected.

Palin was featured as the cover story “She's One of the Folks”, which highlighted Palin's “Joe Six-Pack” appeal, but questioned its relevancy to her VP candidacy. The article cited her interview with Katie Couric as a sign that she piques the interest of voters due to her common appeal.

The cover photo is a very close-up picture, which drew controversy because many people say that a close-up picture of a woman is meant to be unflattering.

In addition, the last time her running mate Sen. John McCain's opponent Sen. Barack Obama was featured on Newsweek, it appeared as if he was adorned with a halo, claiming that Newsweek has a left-wing slant that supports Obama.

I can’t believe it. I’m actually finding myself sort-of agreeing with Sarah Palin about

I can’t believe it. I’m actually finding myself sort-of agreeing with Sarah Palin about something. Newsweek’s new cover is, at best, deeply weird. Some might argue that since Palin posed for that photo in the first place, she shouldn’t be calling its use by Newsweek sexist.

The problem is the use of that photo, ripped out of its context of an interview with Runner’s World and plopped onto the cover of a hard news magazine, is odd, to say the least. I completely fail to see how it passes editor Jon Meacham’s test of conveying the message the magazine is trying to send. How does a picture of Palin posing in running gear that appeared in Runner’s World (which, incidentally, is a completely normal kind of image that you would see of any famous person in that magazine’s “I’m a Runner” series) in conjunction with an article about running in any way convey or reinforce the message that she is bad news for for both the Republican Party and the country as a whole? By the way, that message is one I wholeheartedly agree with, lest you think I’m defending Palin here.

Maybe Newsweek is trying to make some connection between her willingness to do such a magazine interview and photo shoot with the evils of populism, but I can’t see how that connection can be realistically made. It’s incredibly tenuous at best. She was photographed in running gear that, being a sub-four-hour marathoner, she presumably uses regularly while discussing running in a magazine about running. While I agree with the basic and necessarily brutal assessment of Sarah Palin that she’s essentially the Second Coming of William Jennings Bryan minus any sense of economic justice, that cover doesn’t help make that point.

Think about it this way: we all know George W. Bush is an avid distance runner and that John Kerry is a world-class windsurfer for his age group. We all know that there are plenty of photographs of Bush in running gear and of Kerry in windsurfing attire, some of which have appeared in magazines devoted to their respective sports. Have any of those ever been put onto the cover of a hard news magazine to make some kind of point about someone’s impact on our political process? I’ve never seen this done with a male politician, so why is it okay to do with a female one?

I wouldn’t go so far as Palin in saying that Newsweek’s cover is “oh-so-expected” of the magazine’s coverage or perspective. I will agree, though, that the decision to use it is “out-of-context” and, if not consciously sexist, at least rooted in some level of unconscious sexism.

I believe some of the failure to notice this arises from “the boy who cried wolf” syndrome. Here we have a politician who has always been despicably quick to falsely claim unfair treatment and cynically play the victim to boost her political career. As a result, the first time something genuinely strange in media coverage does pop up, we’re slow to see it.

As Sarah Palin continued her no-reporters-allowed book tour around the U.S. of A, she was once again victimized by the “Gotcha Media” on Tuesday.

Presumably in the process of consuming literally all media, Palin ran across the newest issue of Newsweek, which features the former governor on its cover along with the question: “How do you solve a problem like Sarah?”

Not surprisingly, Palin was pissed. She felt victimized. She felt belittled. The media were once again making fun of her. How? you ask.

How about we just let her tell you? From CNN, where they apparently read Palin’s facebook page:

The choice of photo for the cover of this week’s Newsweek is unfortunate. When it comes to Sarah Palin, this ‘news’ magazine has relished focusing on the irrelevant rather than the relevant,” Palin wrote. “The out-of-context Newsweek approach is sexist, and oh-so-expected by now.”

“If anyone can learn anything from it: it shows why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, gender, or color of skin. The media will do anything to draw attention – even if out of context,” Palin also said.

Indeed! How dare Newsweek use a photo Palin posed for on its cover! Is there anything more sexist than that? I mean, she knew it’d be on a magazine cover; she just didn’t know it’d be on Newsweek!

Also, while we’re dissecting this retarded drivel, we’d like to point out that Palin referred to herself in the third person, because she’s Bob Dole.

All that said, we do agree with Palin on one point: “This ‘news’ magazine has relished focusing on the irrelevant rather than the relevant.” Duh, Sarah. That’s why you’re on the cover at all.

Keep Running €3,95, 66 blz.

Runner’s World

Runner’s World €5,35, 98 blz.

I’ve always been apprehensive every time I go out early in the morning to run. Most of the time, I am alone. I try to be always on guard when I walk from my place to the track. Though, the street I usually pass by is well-lit, still I can’t take any chances. I walk briskly and alert for any unusual sights and sounds near me. When I see someone approaching my way, I keep my distance and will look for any signs of untoward behavior.

Here’s an article I look over in Runner’s World. Running has rub off on me that I tried to do some readings about it when I have the time.

WALKING SAFETY

1. Face the traffic: If your walking routes do not have bike paths or sidewalks and you are forced to walk on the road, always walk in the direction facing oncoming traffic.

2. Dress correctly: If you are training when it is still dark, ensure that you are dressed to be seen. Drivers at night or early mornings are rarely on the lookout for walkers, so you need to advertise your presence as vividly as possible. Wear light-colored or reflective clothing like shocking-pink or brilliant orange. Many brands of walking shoes have reflective material on the heels, and tracksuits, bibs and rain suits can now be purchased with reflective strips. Reflective belts are also extremely useful as they are easily noticed by drivers, and can be worn with little or no discomfort. The worst type of clothing to wear while training in the dark is a blue, black or navy tracksuit or T-shirt, which renders the walker virtually invisible to traffic. If you don’t have reflective gear or light colored clothing, pull a white T-shirt on over your tracksuit.

3. Never walk alone: If at all possible, walk with a training partner. Not only does this increase your safety while walking; it also makes your training so much more enjoyable. In the absence of a training companion, always tell someone which route you will be walking and what time you expect to return.

4. Walk defensively. Don’t simply assume that all road-users know about the ‘pedestrian has right-of-way’ rule. Many of them don’t.

5. Lose the jewelry: Leave the valuables back home. I am always aghast at how many individuals go out walking literally dripping with jewels. The only accessory you need is a wristwatch with a stopwatch function.

6. Vary your routes: Don’t establish regular patterns by walking the same route at the same time every day. Keep one step ahead of any would-be muggers by randomly varying your routes and the times that you go out. Not only is it safer, but it’s a lot more interesting!

7. Self-defense: Some individuals carry hand-held spray devices that contain mace or something similar. These are designed to fit comfortably in your hand, are very light and easy to use. Just make sure that if you do need to use it, the wind is not blowing into your face at the time.

8. Carry ID: Always carry some form of identification in case of an accident or medical emergency. If you are away from home on holiday or business, make a note of the address where you are staying.

9. Keep right: If you’re walking on a cycling or pedestrian path, always walk on the right hand side so that faster walkers, runners and cyclists can easily pass. If you’re walking with one or more companions, don’t hog the path and prevent others from easily overtaking.

10. Leave the walkman at home: That way you will be alert to any potential dangers, be it a dog, a fast-approaching car, or the sound of other people around you.

So how many of the items mentioned above you do during your runs?

As I train for the half marathon, my biggest concern, as I mentioned before, is being able to run ou

As I train for the half marathon, my biggest concern, as I mentioned before, is being able to run outside during the winter. The idea of doing 8-10 miles runs on the treadmill is horrifying to me. Therefore, the clear alternative is to make sure that I am getting myself outside for runs on the weekend in the middle of December when sitting inside drinking hot chocolate would seem like a better option.

Instead of bombarding Megan with endless questions, even though I know that she would happily answer them, I decided to turn to Runners World for some advice.

My biggest concern and source of excitement when it comes to running in the winter involves clothing. I want to make sure that I am dressed properly, but honestly, I love the idea of getting some new, awesome apparel! My mom is already asking me what I want for Christmas, so it seems like the perfect time to figure out some nice running-related wish list items.

Here’s what it sounds like I need so far:

Long spandex pants: I currently only have mid-calf length spandex. Megan already warned me that freezing cold ankles are not ideal, so these are definitely on the wish list.

Long sleeve technical tee: I have one, but I would like to up this to three. Just because. And apparently there are shirts with thumbholes?! Count me in. Love it.

Short sleeve technical tee: I don’t have any of these. I have only been running in cotton t-shirts, and it seems like getting a couple of short sleeve technical t-shirts would be helpful for layering and nice when Spring/Summer come around.

Vest: I don’t know why, but I’m super psyched about getting a vest. I like the idea of keeping my core warm, while allowing my arms to remain a little lighter. Plus, I really think that they’re cute.

Jacket: I have no appropriate running jackets. I know that these can be costly, so I have to do some more research to figure out some good ones. Suggestions are welcome!

Gloves: Ugh, I don’t like the idea of running with gloves on. Unlike Megan, I don’t mind wearing gloves in general, but I’d prefer to not wear them while running. However, it seems like if it gets really cold, they may be necessary. We’ll see.

I think that you have to figure out what works best for you, but Runner’s World has some helpful tools for what to wear depending on the temperature.

Go here and you can enter in temperature, wind, conditions (e.g., sun, overcast, etc.) and whether you like to be warm or cool during runs, and it will suggest an outfit for you! Pretty nice. Or if you don’t want to put in data, this article was pretty good too.

I am “nervous” about winter running, but mostly, I’m really excited! When it comes to working out, I actually enjoy feeling like I’m hardcore. I like the idea of waking up and heading outside when most people are hunkering down indoors. The best part is that I know that I won’t be the only one out there. I’m going to try my hardest to look the best , but we’ll all be in it together.

I shot the New York City Marathon last weekend for the combined Runner’s World/Running Times coverage of the race and the events surrounding it. Much like I did for the Boston Marathon, I shot and compiled several online slideshows. And much like Boston, it was a rewarding, but exhausting weekend. Okay, maybe a little more trying than Boston, given some ludicrous circumstances that I won’t bore you with, but that involve a certain hotel with a lousy Internet connection and lung-searing fresh paint fumes!

ANYWAY…back to the race. I started out at 58th Street and First Avenue where the runners first come off the Queensboro Bridge and enter Manhattan at mile 16 of the race. I’ve been at this spot in the past and even as a person who shies away from noise and crowds (such a natural choice I am for covering a 40,000-person race in the fourth-most-populated city in the world!), I never tire of the roar that erupts at this spot as runners come off that bridge. Almost makes me want to run the race. ALMOST, I said. How cool is it that all these strangers are cheering for you? You must feel like the biggest hero in the world when you hear that crowd.

The swarm of people that boisterously welcomed runners coming into Manhattan.

One of several Maasai runners in the race added even more color to an already dazzling foliage display.

Next I jumped on the subway and headed uptown to the east side of Central Park. It was actually much easier to get around than I thought it would be based on past experience. The crowds were thin between miles 24 and 25 of the course (a great place to watch if you don’t want to fight your way through mobs of people, but still want to be relatively close to the finish).

The two most important tools for friends and families of marathoners: a phone and a camera.

Then it was on to the finish, well, with a slight detour. I meant to head toward the finish but actually wound up near Columbus Circle, which is the half-mile-to-go point. (One of these years I’ll know where all those windy paths in Central Park go!) The crowds at Columbus Circle have been difficult to navigate in the past, but again, it was surprisingly sparse here so I took some shots before heading on to the finish area. This is where I met the inspirational “pan man” from Yankee stadium. Freddy, you rule.

Runners in the final half mile of the marathon cruise toward the finish in Central Park.

Eight or so blocks past the actual finish, where the runners file out of the park to meet their loved ones, I was meeting a fellow journalist who was going to help take down some information about the runners I was photographing for the Faces at the Finish slideshow. I calculated I had a half hour or so to take some shots in the immediate finish area before I was so late that he would hate me. It was a great spot to capture people in a range of post-marathon emotions…euphoria, exhaustion, misery and most frequently, relief.

The marathon can reduce even grown men into weeping babes, as demonstrated by Desmond Henderson of Ireland who sunk tearfully into a loved one's arms post-finish.

I’ve never seen so many spent looking people in one place, both physically and emotionally. It really drove home how hard running that far is (at least if you are doing it at a decently fast pace). Not that I would know. A lot of people ask me when I am photographing events like this if I’m a runner. Many say “you look like a runner.” (And let me tell you, that is not a compliment. They might as well say “you have a flat chest, cavernous eye sockets, dangerously sharp cheekbones and a hard gaze.”) But I’m not a runner. Not really anyway. I often say “I used to be” because to me being a runner means competing in running events, which I did in high school and my first year of college and then sporadically afterwards until I took up cycling, which is now my sport of choice. My fragile frame has a hard time enduring the toll pounding the pavement takes. But I still know the euphoric feeling running can bring. And its pain and disappointments as well. Photographing this range of emotions is a way for me to live vicariously through people who are able to run 26.2 miles. And for that I am grateful.

You can search by topic, experience level, geography and more.

So, grab a magazine or find a blog to read then start planning your Spring races while you’re pounding the pavement this winter dressed in layers with your hat and gloves.

Bart Yasso’s My Life on the Run could just has easily have been called Bart’s Excellent Adventures. Which was a much better joke when I was planning it out in my mind.

Anyway, Bart Yasso is a Character, and like the man, the book is engaging and delightful. Yes, there are regular asides about the attractiveness of women, which always drive me crazy. But Yasso at least extends his comments to men occasionally, so I’ll give him some benefit of the doubt and say that he’s being descriptive rather than sexist.

What are these adventures, you might ask? Well, Yasso has to give a report on Socrates, or “So-crates” as he calls him and … still not funny?

Yasso runs the Badwater ultra marathon, a 146-mile race in July in Death Valley. He runs a 5k at a nudist colony, which is secretly on my life list–my friend told me that she did one topless–what is it with people from the LV?

He runs the Rome marathon the day after he gets married; he conquers Lyme Disease twice; he craves the attention of his father (just like us regular folk!); he notches his only marathon win at age 43 (there’s still hope!); and, most importantly, he has a fantastic time doing it.

Call me a Tuesdays with Morrie kind of sucker, but I like stories written by enthusiastic, affable people doing crazy things and enjoying themselves. (I also like love stories where people die at the end so you can experience the full range of human emotion.)

Since my work deals with both health and technology, I’ve been especially interested in using

Since my work deals with both health and technology, I’ve been especially interested in using online running logs to track my runs. But even though there’s a lot of options out there, I had trouble finding one that met my needs. I also didn’t really want to pay for a service since I felt like I don’t need or want the most advanced features. I also don’t use GPS or want any mobile apps, so none of that really mattered to me.

After trying several and finally finding one I like, I thought I’d put together my experiences with the sites I’ve tried, in the order I tried them:

MapMyRun.com: I started using this to mark my running distances and used it all during my marathon training.
Although I created a free account, I never really used the logging functions. When I went back to try the site again, I found too much going on – there are three steps to log a workout, there’s groups/goals/challenges and various social functions, and to be honest, it’s all a bit overwhelming. Every time I tried to use the running log I ended up getting lost around the site, and the input form itself is not the greatest. NEXT!

BestRunningLog.com: I actually really like this site. The form to add a run is really simple but thorough, and the entire site is elegant to navigate. The site includes charts, stats, and PRs all for the free account, and generally asks for just the right amount of information – weather, distance, comments, pace, etc. It also clearly shows race vs. training. The only major drawback is there’s no way to map your run and connect it to the log, which was enough for me to start looking for another site.

TrainingPeaks.com: I found this one because it links up to Microsoft HealthVault, and I liked the idea of being able to share whatever info I put in there with other sites. TrainingPeaks is nothing if not thorough, and I quickly knew I was in over my head. The site is not the most user-friendly, but for Very Serious athletes it is extremely robust. You can plan and track workouts and meals down to the calories and various nutrients, which is way more than I really needed.

Meanwhile, TrainingPeaks (like MapMyRun) has a free version and a paid version with more features, and unfortunately, I kept finding more things liked behind the paywall. Certain graphs were not available, and I couldn’t plan future runs. TrainingPeaks is also not purely a running service, and you can tell.

Finally, and this is admittedly nitpicky, the route planner used some sort of internal mapping service unlike Google Maps like all the other sites. I don’t want to be a Google snob, but I’m used to looking at it and their maps are really buggy. Nothing is worse than mapping out a detailed run only to have the site freeze and lose it. So, NEXT!

ActiveTrainer: Part of the Active.com family, where CoolRunning lives, ActiveTrainer is a fairly basic running log. I was able to get a few free training plans through a T-Mobile promo, and having them automatically filled on the calendar is a nice feature.

The site is not the easiest to use and looks fairly stripped down, but I found that it has most of the same features of the other sites, including a route tracker that uses Google Maps!

I thought I had a winner on my hands, but when I tried to load a saved route into a workout, I was told only premium (paid) users could do that. Since that’s a basic feature on the other sites, I thought there had to be something better. Also, the Active.com community and site is just meh. The articles are not all that interesting and it’s not somewhere I would visit otherwise.

NYTimes: The Well blog has been covering marathons and running extensively leading up to yesterday’s NYC Marathon, and the site put up a training tool. It seems to be working for me now, but for weeks it wasn’t loading properly. While it’s nice to have the free training plans, the log itself is not nearly as robust as the other sites.

I’d hope that in the future, NYTimes sticks to reviewing other sites instead of trying to create their own. Or, even better, team up with one of the other sites to offer these great plans inside another site.

One site that was mentioned on the Well blog wast DailyMile, which seems to be great for sharing and syncing with Facebook (think Twitter for runners), but I’m not that much of an exhibitionist runner, ha.

So finally I tried out the Runner’s World log, which is probably where I should have started in the first place. This place is clearly made for runners. It has everything – clear stat charts, Google Maps that links really easily to new runs, a clear view of how many miles and hours run over the past week, month, and year, and an easy way to track PRs.

Runner’s World also has tons of articles and blogs, of course, AND it has free training plans based off previous times and personal goals. It’s clearly the overwhelming winner for me.

This article is about a new type of diet, the “flexitarian” diet. The diet has to do with slowly cutting out meat from your meals, but not doing away with it completely. The lead is in the first paragraph and it is not very inventive, but it works for the story. It groups carnivores and vegetarian into two categories, which is apparently how runners see people. The article is about breaking this structure down, which is shown at the beginning of the second paragraph in the nut-graf.

The flex tips are small helping hints that are simple strategies that can get you started on your “flexitarian” diet. They seem like good ideas, although I don’t think that mushrooms are vegetables. I think the article works well and could get people to change their diet. I am a poor college student so I only eat meat a few days of the week anyway, but I can see how people could be swayed by the little tips given.
