WTF is this what the whole Simmons family going to do now? Just be rappers? First we had Run(he did it like no other), next JoJo (failure), and now Diggy (surprisingly good and surpassing his older brother JoJo in bounds skill and image wise).  Diggy can spit and comes with a good message on this track.  He has his mixtape The First Flight dropping November 27 aka Black Friday.  There is a lesson to be learned here. Where the first brother failed the second brother shall succeed.

Remember when I mentioned being frequently surprised by unexpected events a lot lately? Well, not much has changed. Life is steadily throwing curveballs my way but I’m rollin’ with the punches. No worries at all. Actually, I’m only mentioning it to explain the laziness that’s about to follow. ha My brain is a little more scattered than usual so I dug up an entry from my old blog that was typed around this time two-years ago. Let’s look back at what I was rambling about then:

What up peeps!  
First off lemme kick this off by saying another CONGRATS to my homebwoy, DJ Spontaneous. Last week, Spon announced that he’s the new tour DJ for Trey Songz. I hear that Spon is headed to Japan and other overseas locations with the tour this week! GO SPONTANEOUS!!!

Last week was a good week for premieres. My favorite-est reality tv family, The Simmonses, returned for a new season of Run’s House.

Also, thanks to bootleg man, I saw the anticipated movie American Gangster

…aka the movie with every rapper and their mama in it. If you plan to see it when it’s released on Friday you’ll see what I mean. (Common, T.I., the RZA, Anthony Hamilton…ok, he’s not a rapper but close enough. Check out Cuba Gooding Jr. as Nicky Barnes too. ha!) I’m not going to spoil it but I expected more.  The acting is superb but the flow of the movie was kinda boring to me. And, of course, since it’s based on a true story they couldn’t spice it up but so much.

 Mary J. Blige’s “Just Fine”

I was bumping this joint allllllll day on Friday! At the end Mary pays homage to the “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” video.  Mary be getting her life!  She’s not the world’s greatest dancer but she be hittin’ them Michael moves! Plus she looks like she’s having a ball. And I can’t even comment on the fantabulous fashions Miss Thang is rockin’. *whew*

To round out my premiere week on Friday evening I saw Joel Osteen live at the Arena. Yes, I said Joel Osteen! I admit to tuning into Lakewood’s broadcast every week to hear the uplifting messages from “the Smiling Preacher”. He’s not the only one I regularly tune into. I “watch church” for 3+ hours as if I was sitting in a real one.  (long story about why I left my old church) Anyway, the evening show was sold out so it was deeeep down there [at the Arena]. Look at where our seats were:

And I got tickets online at 10am on the day they went on sale!!!  I’m not going to rave about Joel too much but he rocks and if you want to know why he’s so popular just check out one of his broadcasts/podcasts. Anyone else think this is waaaay weird that the Feds can just up and decide that Daylight Savings time will be next weekend instead of the one that just passed?  It’s like they can tell us when to get up, start our day and go to sleep because we’re working on THEIR clock. Ok, ok lemme stop before this turns in to the Matrix or Enemy of the State and a bunch of dudes in black suits show up at my door.

Back to the future. I’m taking classes (long story) and I totally tanked on an exam yesterday Luckily I have the chance to re-take it on Monday. So I’m going jump back into the books. I recently got to talk to Vanessa Simmons ( of MTV’s “Run’s House”, “Daddy’s Girls”), Wesley Jonathan (“What I Like About You”, “Roll Bounce”) and producers La Monde Byrd and native Chicagoan, Mekita Faiye (who also plays one of the lead characters) about their hilarious new comedy “Speed-Dating: The Movie” which will be released in the coming months. Check out what they had to say…

DL: Tell us about the “SPEED-DATING” movie and the great ensemble cast you’ve put together…

MEKITA: Oh wow, “SPEED-DATING” will be the must-see movie of 2010! It’s about these three guys who come up with this scheme that involves speed dating to raise money for their club and to meet women. It’s kind of like “Wedding Crashers” and it takes you on a wonderful journey with a lot of laughs along the way. The cast includes Wesley Jonathan, Chico Benymon who many know from the show “Half & Half”, Leonard Robinson of MTV’s “Wild’n’Out”…we have Vanessa Simmons, of course, from “Run’s House”, Emmy award winner Chris Elliott, Holly Robinson-Peete, Clint Howard (brother of Ron Howard) who was recently in “Night At The Museum 2”, rapper Chingy, Kelly Perrine…the list goes on and on.

DL: Where did you come up with the concept for the film?

LA MONDE: The writer and director Joseph Elmore originally came up with the idea and from there we took it, shaped it, developed it a bit and then the actors breathed life into it.

DL: Wesley, you play the lead character “TOO COOL” in this film and your career spans decades in film and television, what attracted you to this project?

WESLEY: I just read the script and it was funny to me. I originally wasn’t the first choice to play “Too Cool”, but time had passed and the project sort of came back around to me and I also found out that Chico and some my partners from the business were in it so that was an added plus because I like working with my friends.

DL: Vanessa, we got to see on the “Daddy’s Girls” show that you prepared for your role by going on an actual speed dating event. What was that experience like?

VANESSA: Oh man, I had a lot of fun! I like a lot of hands on experience to prepare for roles that I’m doing, so the fact that I got to go on an actual speed dating event for the first time was actually kind of fun, but weird at the same time because the guys thought they were going to go on a real date afterwards.

DL: The “TOO COOL” character was a bit of a ladies man/womanizer…were there any real life “players” you drew from to develop this character?

WESLEY: Nah, not really. I was able to play this guy pretty straightforward because he was just being cool. In films like “Roll Bounce” and other projects I’ve worked on, I’ve definitely borrowed from other characters. I did get to adlib and improv and be silly during the filming of some of the speed dating scenes.

DL: Vanessa, ironically your character ELIZABETH is the “church-going” girl who gets involved with the DOG character played by Chico Benymon. Everyone knows your real-life Dad is the legendary Rev. Run of Run D.M.C. , so do guys get intimidated by you having the “preacher’s kid” stigma?

VANESSA: Unfortunately, yes! I’m like, listen guys, if I love you and I like you and I’m bringing you home, my Dad’s gonna give you that benefit, I think, until I turn my back…so I’ve heard. I just usually have to prepare guys when they meet him, but he’s a Dad like any other Dad. As far as Elizabeth, I like the character a lot and can relate to her in a lot of ways because she’s the good girl and she’s not doing the crazy things the rest of the girls are doing.

DL: Mekita, you did double duty in this movie as Wesley’s love interest and producer for the movie. Were you nervous going into your first starring role and wearing hat as producer?

MEKITA: It’s funny you ask that. It was definitely a challenge and I look back on it amazed at how I got through it, but I owe that part to God.

DL: What’s next for everybody?

WESLEY: I’m in a new movie coming soon called “The Obama Effect” directed by Charles Dutton and another called “B-Girl” and I’m currently working on a new project “Four to the Floor” with Evan Ross.

VANESSA: As you know my sister [Angela] and I have the Pastry clothing line which is doing very well and we’re expanding right now and couldn’t be happier. “Daddy’s Girls” is in its second season and Vanessa’s making her way around Hollywood and has some upcoming projects on the horizon.

LA MONDE: Stay tuned for “SPEED-DATING” to be released soon. This film is testing well with men AND women in the preliminary screenings and I think we have an incredible project on our hands. I’ve got to give a quick thanks to Blacksingles.com and HurryDate.com as well!

Earlier this summer, his television series, “Hammertime,” debuted to the world on A&E. The show followed his family life and was very similar to “Run’s House” in many ways.

In a short span of time, “Hammertime” became a hit TV series as A&E is looking poised to move into VH1’s territory. Burrell has been married for 23 years and he has six children. “Hammertime” revolved around the former rapper adjusting to life as a middle class citizen.

Run’s House stars, Rev. Run and Justine Simmons are promoting their latest book on parental advice. Their new book is the paperback sequel to their first literary endeavor, the New York Times bestseller; “Take Back Your Family.” Entitled “Take Back Your Family: How To Raise Respectful and Loving Kids In a Dysfunctional World,” the patriarch and matriarch of the family give tag-team advice in particular on the importance of family time even if it means forcing your kids to do it.

“I was never like that with my parents. Diggy…oh my god, he doesn’t want us to come up to his school and you would think he would want his father to come. Oh my god, no, worse person to come up to his school. Russy, he don’t want you to get out the car. As far as a vacation, we make them go, number 1. You don’t have a choice and it’s funny because the ones that say they don’t wanna go, those are the ones that have the most fun. Same with Jo Jo, the Hawaii trip…He didn’t wanna say it on air but he said to me, my husband and the boys…he said, ‘I just want y’all to know, we’re really lucky that we have parents that love us and care about us.’ You know I started crying, child. He said, ‘I really didn’t wannna come on the trip but I’m really glad I did. I’m glad I got to spend time with you Diggy and Russy and I’m glad I got to spend time with you ma.’ I was just a mess…”

While their son Jo Jo is doing much better and appreciating family vacations, his fans were shocked to find out that he was arrested for possession of marijuana. Instead of running from the media and the negative press, Justine and Run embraced it, shaping the ordeal into a teachable moment and using it for the show. Rev Run spoke exclusively to HipHopWired about the irony of his son doing the same thing he did in his youth and teaching Jo Jo how to avoid the sins of his father.

“I told him he was selfish on the show, I don’t know if you saw that episode. I said when you went to jail, you took us all to jail. Number 1, you’re in a different predicament than me. I wasn’t Jo Jo, I was Run. I’m totally different. I couldn’t have had my father on TMZ, he wasn’t an entertainer. I didn’t have as much to protect, I didn’t have all this over me, all these expectations like that. He has a different situation, he just came off a show, he got a BMW, life is different. There’s no reason for him to do the things he does. So, yeah, give him a pass a little bit but there’s consequences here Jo Jo. Alright, how’d you like jail last night? Was it fun? How’d you like us being all over TMZ? Let’s make an episode out of this…I know you don’t like the cops, I know you don’t like your dad with the collar right now, I know you don’t like how we’re gonna make this an episode. So a lot came out of it and it’s up to him now to see if he’s gonna be smart and say, that was a little too edgy for me. You never know what the hell a kid might do. You know maybe he was scared, maybe not scared enough. I hope he was scared enough, all I can do now is pray.“

Moving away from the Jo-Jo fiasco, Run gave HipHopWired his perspective on the state of Hip-Hop today, expressing his appreciation for artists from Jay-Z to Gucci Mane.

“I like Jay-Z, Beyonce, I love the business people. Jay-Z’s married, Beyonce’s amazing. Young Jeezy’s doing what he supposed to do, he’s very dope on the mic. I love the creativity of Gucci Mane, I like some of the stuff. I’m part of it. Hip-Hop is on MTV in the form of a Reverend. Hopefully they look at me and gather a little bit of that and not try to fight the fact that Run has this going on his life. Hopefully that weighs a little on all these rappers that might be slightly unruly, put a little bit of Rev Run on ya. Not saying be totally me, but find some order…”

America first got a proper introduction to Vanessa and Angela Simmons on the hit MTV series, “Run’s House.” Throughout their time on the show, Vanessa and Angela often pleaded to their father, Rev Run (real name Joseph Simmons), for a place of their own. At one point, the daughters of Run moved into a Manhattan apartment, but eventually, Run forced them to move back into his home.

The Simmons daughters started their own footwear line, Pastry, under Run Athletics, in 2006. The daughters traveled to Los Angeles in 2007 and loved it so much that they decided to move to the city. After persuading their reluctant father, the move was approved. This time, though, the girls were out of “Run’s House” for good. They still made some appearances on the show, but the fans wanted to see more of them, this set the stage for a spin-off.

On January 5, 2009, Vanessa and Angela were granted their own MTV series, “Daddy’s Girls.” The series follows their day-to-day lives as they try to mix a social life with their business life, running Pastry. “Daddy’s Girls” has also proven to be a hit for the network after its 7 episode run was successful. MTV quickly renewed the series for a second season.

Last night, the second season of “Daddy’s Girls” premiered. The show comes on Tuesdays on MTV at 10:00 pm.

The latest celebrity Twitter battle involves the young and the senseless. Rev. Run’s son, Jo Jo Simmons received a Twitter jab from Soulja Boy Tuesday after announcing to all 34,000 + of his followers that SB wasn’t “too dope” lyrically while posting a link to his song “Patriotic”. Jo Jo’s Tweet read:

“Lyrically Soulja Boy aint to dope but musically he’s a genuis this join right here kinda catchy http://tinyurl.com/kppxg3”

Enraged and offended, Soulja Boy fired back saying:

“@YoungSimmons Lyrically I ain’t dope?.. “Kinda” catchy? Watch your mouth bruh..”

Obviously fearing the wrath of the Simmons’ clan and probably prompted by his PR team, Soulja Boy deleted the tweet quickly and acted as though it never happened. Apparently Jo Jo didn’t see the tweet before it was removed but heard about it. He tweeted this morning saying:

“That Soulja Boy post gotta be fake. If i aint see it then i dont believe it and it ain’t there.”

Wow!!! We can’t wait to see this lyrical battle… But Jo Jo, get a hit first at least to make this battle relevant.
