Today I took a kickboxing class.   I have enjoyed many flavors of exercise in my day but have always kept my distance from kickboxing and now I know why…Kickboxing = “kick and kick and kick until they carry me away in a pine box.”   The Nazi, I mean instructor who left my hip-flexors somewhere in the far corner of the room was ruthless and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

After crawling back home and inserting two hip replacements from the kit I had ordered from Ebay I felt good as new and enjoyed a little chit-chat with my new BBLHHATMUFMBFF or (Bulgarian Bruce Lee Hybrid Hottie Actor Taekwondo Master Uber Fab Model Best Friend Forever.) Anton Kasabov!

With nearly 20 years as a Taekwondo expert Anton admitted it was hardly a traditional dream for a Bulgarian “lad” but after seeing a Bruce Lee movie at age 8 he was hooked.  Clearly, this was not a guy who cared very much for the status quo.   “I just don’t play by the rules, never have never will and sometimes family and friends don’t quiet get it…But in time they understand and see it is important to me!”

With next to no body fat (hating him!) and a desire to try and gain   weight (hating him more) his endearing personality made me feel as if I was the only thing that mattered during this busy man’s life.   Kasabov is no stranger to Tinsel Town or the big screen – sharing some celluloid with Jackie Chan in Rush Hour 3 and also showing what he was made of in Tekken based on the randomly Fab video game.

Does he want to be a Movie Star?   Hmmm surely not in the traditional sense and he is the first one to explain he is “not out to reinvent the wheel”.  With so many talents and unnerving good-looks he is now seriously studying acting and proud of his new indie short The Way of the Tiger…

I have the pleasure to speak to some remarkable people and each moves me in his/her own way…Anton was no exception as I felt I was in the “presence” of someone real, someone exciting and someone cutting-edge and on the edge of something extraordinary.

Anton, you reminded me everything is possible and rules are for other people!  Bravo and thank you…

สมัยก่อนเฉินหลงอาจจะเป็นยอดนักบู๊ฝั่งเอเชียคนนึงที่เป็นมือหนึ่งในด้านแอ็กชั่น ได้รับเสียงตอบรับในทางที่ดีและมีแนวทางในการเล่นผาดโผนอย่างโดดเด่น แต่ทุกวันนี้ ด้วยวัยที่มากขึ้นบวกกับน้องรุ่นใหม่ๆที่มาพร้อมสโลแกนเล่นจริงเจ็บจริง หรือจะเป็นเพราะตัวเขาเองที่อยากลองเล่นแนวอื่นบ้าง พักหลังๆมานี่เราจึงไม่ค่อยได้เห็นเฉินหลงออกมาบู๊ระห่ำเหมือนครั้งก่อนๆแล้ว

และถึงจะเป็นบทในหนังแอ็กชั่น ก็มักจะไม่ใช่บทแอ็กชั่นฮีโร่เต็มตัวเหมือนเมื่อก่อน แต่จะหนักไปทางตลกไม่ก็เบาลงในงานที่ต้องออกแรง ดูได้จากผลงานที่ผ่านมาและกำลังจะตามมาในอนาคต เพราะหลังจากเสร็จ Rush Hour 3 หนังต่อมาที่เป็นการร่วมงานกับเพื่อนรักเจ็ท ลีอย่าง The Forbidden Kingdom ก็ไม่ใช่หนังบู๊มันๆอย่างที่แฟนๆรอคอย แต่เป็นเทพนิยายในการตีความใหม่ของชาวตะวันตกเสียมากกว่า แถมยังเล่นเป็นอาจารย์ให้พระเอกด้วย เหมือนบทในหนังต่อมาอย่างแอนิเมชั่นสุดฮิต Kung Fu Panda ที่อาศัยความเป็นยอดกังฟูในอดีตมาสร้างคาแรกเตอร์รุ่นพี่ของเจ้าแพนด้าตัวเอก หรือการกลับมาร่วมงานกับฝั่งเอเชียเองอย่าง ใหญ่แค้นเดือด ก็ลดดีกรีลีลาบู๊ลงไปเยอะ

ส่วนบทในอนาคตที่น่าสนใจก็จะตามมาด้วย The Spy Next Door ที่เจ้าตัวรับบทคล้ายๆกับวิน ดีเซลใน The Pacifier เฉินหลงในเรื่องก็คือพี่เลี้ยงเด็กชาวจีน ( หน้าให้มาก ) ที่วันนึงความลับเผยว่าแท้จริงแล้ว ว่าเขาคือสุดยอดสายลับ ( เนื้อเรื่องคุ้นๆมั้ยเนี่ย ) และเรื่องที่เรากำลังจพูดถึงในตอนนี้ก็คือ Kung Fu Kid ที่เป็นหนังชื่อกังฟูเกี่ยวกับกังฟูอีกเรื่องที่พี่เฉินของเราเล่นเป็นอาจารย์

หนังใช้เค้าโครงเดิมจากหนังเก่าชื่อดัง Karate Kid ที่เป็นเรื่องของเด็กหนุ่มที่ได้มาเจอกับอาจารย์กังฟูจนได้วิชานั้นมาและกลายเป็นคนใหม่ที่กลับมายืนบนลำแข้งตัวเองได้อีกครั้ง

ซึ่งเวอร์ชั้นใหม่ก็ได้เปลี่ยนจากวิชาคาเรเต้มาเป็นกังฟูอย่างที่เห็น เพื่อที่จะได้เข้าทางเฉินหลง แต่หนังจะทำได้ดีเหมือนที่ฉบับเก่าสร้างไว้ได้หรือไม่ มาดูกันว่ามีอะไรบ้างที่ทีมงานต้องหนักใจ

อย่างแรกเลยหนังฉบับปี 1984 เป็นหนังที่ประสบความสำเร็จอย่างสูงจนขึ้นแท่นหนังคลาสสิก ตลอดจนมีภาคต่อตามมาอีกสองภาคและแจ้งเกิดให้ดาราหนุ่ม Ralph Macchio อย่างสวยงาม……Jaden Smith ที่ผ่านงานแสดงมาแล้วสองเรื่อง ล้วนแล้วแต่ประสบความสำเร็จไม่ทางใดก็ทางหนึ่งเช่นกัน อาจจะแจ้งเกิดได้ในวงกว้างหรือเปล่านั้น น่าลุ้นยิ่งกว่าอะไรทั้งหมดเสียอีก

สอง นี่เป็นงานกำกับของ John G. Avildsen หนึ่งรางวัลออสการ์จาก Rocky หนังกีฬาดราม่าคลาสสิกเช่นกัน แต่ของใหม่นี่ได้ Harald Zwart ที่เพิ่งคว่ำไปกับภาคต่อ The Pink Panther 2 เมื่อต้นปีมาหมาดๆ แต่เคยทำหนังสายลับรุ่นเล็กจนดังมาแล้วจาก Agent Cody Banks

สาม Pat Morita ที่เพิ่งลาโลกไปไม่นานมานี้ เจ้าของบทอันน่าจดจำ Mr. Kesuke Miyagi ที่เป็นผู้ถ่ายทอดวิชาให้เจ้าหนูนั้นชิงออสการ์ครั้งแรกและครั้งเดียวจากเรื่องนี้ และเป็นรางวัลเดียวที่หนังเข้าชิงด้วย ส่วนเฉินหลงนั้นถึงจะมีฝีไม้ลายมือเป็นที่ประจักษ์ แต่ทั้งโลกก็ยังจดจำเขาในฐานะฮีโร่หน้าตี๋มาดฮาๆอยู่ดี แต่หลังจากรับเล่นในใหญ่แค้นเดือด บทที่เป็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงพอสมควรจากเล่นๆมาเป็นเค้นอารมณ์ บางทีนี่ก็อาจเป็นอีกหนึ่งจุดเปลี่ยนอีกครั้งก็ได้

อย่างไรก็ตามกว่าหนังจะฉายก็ 11 มิถุนายนปี 201O โน่น ยังมีเวลาให้จับตามองอีกเยอะ ถึงนี่จะเป็นหนังรีเมคก็ตามที และอย่าลืมว่านี่เป็นการเจอกันของอาจารย์เอเชียกับเด็กน้อยผิวสีอีกด้วย !!!

แต่ใบปิดแรกกลับใช้ชื่อว่า Karate Kid เอ๊ะ ยังไงกันเนี่ย

Regarded as one of Japan’s most respected actors, Sanada is probably best known to western audiences for his roles in Rush Hour 3, Sunshine and The Last Samurai. The 48-year old is joining the cast of Lost’s sixth and final season for a “significant recurring role”.

Given that earlier this week John Hawkes was cast as Lennon, the translator for a foreign corporation, and Darlton have just cast a major foreign actor, it seems fairly logical to connect the two. That would seem to throw my theory about the “corporation” that Lennon works for being the Hanso Foundation, assuming that Sanada would be playing Lennon’s boss. It would be odd for them to have set up Alvar Hanso as a white Danish guy only to have him played by a Japanese actor, after all!

Whilst it might not be the most ethnically-sensitive casting (although it happens in Hollywood all the time) it’s also possible that Sanada could be playing a Korean; if, therefore, he is connected with Lennon/the corporation then it might suggest Paik Heavy Industries, the company headed by Sun’s father which has some sort of tie to the island.

Guess we’ll just have to wait and see. I think it’s interesting that Lost is still introducing new characters so late in the game, but it’s definitely a move I support. Having such an extensive ensemble cast is one of Lost’s strengths, and each well-handled character just adds another little thread to the tapestry.

I almost didn’t watch this movie after hearing some bad comments about it.  But I feel that I should and it couldn’t be that bad.  Well am glad that I listened to my ‘movie-instinct’ because I really enjoyed this film.  The only thing I noticed was that the dialogue had a lot of negative comment about America or Americans for that matter.  I believe the script-writer is very disappointed on how the U.S. government is handling the crisis post 9/11 and how some people perceive the United States these days.  Anyhow, it’s entertainment – a feel good action/comedy movie, and if you just relax and don’t mind too much about political insults; then you will surely have a laugh.

It’s a very morbid day as not one but two important figures of the French acting world passed away of unnatural causes.

Most tragic is undoubtedly the 37 year old Guillaume Depardieu, son of the internationally-known Gérard Depardieu (Babylon A.D.), who died today, October 13th, of a sudden pneumonia attack due to a virus caught a few days ago in Romania on the set of the thriller L’Enfant D’Icare (literally Icarus’ Child). Winner of a César acting award (the French equivalent of the Oscars) for the 1995 comedy Les Apprentis (literally The Apprentices) and nominated twice before, this is unbelievably not the only incredibly tragic event of Guillaume Depardieu’s short life.

Indeed the troubled, formerly drug-addicted actor had many run-ins with the the law and several stints in prison but most sad is the traffic accident he was involved in in 1995. A suitcase which had fallen from a car caused him to fall from his motorcycle and badly damage his right knee. He was immediately operated on but things didn’t go very well and an infection settled in, forcing him to have his right leg amputated in 2003.

He however didn’t let that stop him and resumed his acting career, at the same time creating the Guillaume Depardieu Foundation for nosomical infections. He was last seen on the big screen in the acclaimed dramas Versailles and On War, both shown at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Having played over forty roles, some of his best-known films are the 1991’s All The Mornings Of The Wold and 1999’s Pola X. He was also a recipient of the prestigious Jean Gabin Award.

Guillaume Depardieu is survived by his father, his mother the actress Elisabeth Guignot (Jean De Florette), his sister the actress Julie Depardieu (Rush Hour 3), his half-sister Roxane, his half-brother Jean and his daughter Louise. He will posthumously appear in a couple of forthcoming films and no word on what will happen to L’Enfant D’Icare.

Today also marks the death of 80 year old Françoise Seigner, of pancreatic cancer. The acclaimed actress, aunt of actresses Emmanuelle (The Diving Bell And The Butterfly) and Mathilde (Harry, He’s Here To Help/With A Friend Like Harry…), best known for her contributions to the theater nevertheless acted in a few films, most famously 1970’s The Wild Child and most recently the 2005 Agatha Christie adaptation By The Pricking Of My Thumbs.

One must also not forget celebrated 71 year old Japanese actor Ken Ogata, who died on October 5th of liver cancer. The award-winning performer is best-known for such films as The Pillow Book, Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters and several collaborations with late director Shohei Imamura, including one of the segments of 11′09”01: September 11 and the 1983 Golden Palm winner Ballad Of Narayama. He is survived by his two actor sons Kanta (The Samurai I Loved) and Naoto (The Deep Red).
