As he begins to drive the Union troops back, he is attacked from behind by Gen. Jeremiah Sullivan. Surrounded, Forrest fights his way out and escapes, but loses nearly 300 men.

Battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River) begins. Bragg’s army pushes Federals back to the Nashville Turnpike. Skirmish at Overall’s Creek.

“This has been a most eventful day. At daylight this morning very heavy cannonading was heard in the direction of Murfreesboro…. About 1 P.M. it was less frequent and seemed fainter—could it be that our [gallant] fellows were driving the Vandal before them?… Darlin’ [her pet name for her husband John] went into town [McMinnville] and came home about 11 o’clock with glorious news…. [Our troops] had whipped the enemy—loss heavy on both sides…. I could scarcely keep from crying for joy when Darlin’ told me the news…. I could not sleep for thinking of the poor fellows who were lying on the battlefield— some cold in death —others shivering with cold and writhing in pain…. [But] who was there with a warm glance to cheer their last agonizing hours?… The surgeons are busy tonight—the little city of Murfreesboro is full of the wounded. God help them!” [Lucy Virginia French, journal]

Horrid Murder. – The wife of Jonathan Dalton of Montfort’s Cove, in this County, was committed to jail, in this town, on Wednesday last, charged with shooting her husband, while asleep, on the morning of the previous day. The evidence against her, we are told, is entirely circumstantial, as no person is known to have been in the house when the deed was perpetrated except herself and husband. She, however, states that a mulatto man who had married her sister, came to the house during the night, and that he endeavoured to persuade her to leave her husband and go home with him; that she went out of the house early in the morning and left them both within, when she soon heard the discharge of a gun, and without entering the house fled to the neighbors for aid – saying that a mulatto man had killed her husband. Her tale is by no means consistent. She had been married to him but three or four months, and we are told, that they had not lived together for a considerable portion of the time, and that she had positively declared that she never would live with him. We must forbear to state the circumstance relative to this transaction which have come to us, as they might serve to prejudice her trial, which will probably take place in October next. Dalton, we are informed, was dead before any of his neighbors arrived. Suspicion falls on another person as having been an accessory.

Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation presented a case to the Rutherford County grand jury this month that returned an indictment against a Christiana, Tenn. man for stealing money from his Murfreesboro employer. Rutherford County Sheriff’s deputies arrested the subject of the TBI investigation on the charge yesterday.

Jerry Alexander, 50, was indicted on one count of theft over $1,000. The TBI investigation revealed that during 2012, Alexander stole more than $1,000 from his employer, Alley Cassetty Brick and Block located at 415 New Salem Road in Murfreesboro. Alexander was employed as the Operations Manager and took money directly from customers for his own use and voided the business transaction. He also sold the company’s scrap metal and kept the money earned from the scrap for personal use.

He was booked into the Rutherford County Jail where he posted a $10,000 bond and was released.

Hey Tennessee, we’re partnering with the Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Start

Hey Tennessee, we’re partnering with the Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Starting today, Mike Casterline will be spinning from 4 to 6 p.m. You can find him on the corner of Mercury and Middle Tennessee Blvd in Murfreesboro.

Mike will be performing eye-catching tricks with the custom sign to spread the message to shop, save and donate.

The ReStore is a place where new and gently used materials are sold to the general public at heavily discounted prices. The purpose of the store is to generate enough income to cover 100% of operational costs so that all donations can directly benefit the construction of Habitat homes.

“I hope that while making people smile, I can raise awareness and support for Habitat’s goal of providing life-changing opportunities for people to buy and own quality, affordable homes,” Casterline said. “Plus, it feels good to do my part and give back to the community.”

AArrow Advertising is a dynamic, social-entrepreneurial corporation committed to youth employment, education, economic development and humanitarian advancement.

To see what’s spinning, check out AArrowads.com.

I know that this is not the best picture but it is one of my favorites. It’s a picture of my maternal grandfather given to me by my aunt. I have only seen this and one other picture of him.

The picture sparks so many questions. My grandfather David Beam Hart died the year I was born so I never knew him. HIs nickname was Buddy and he and my grandmother Alda were the parents of 12. My grandmother lived a long life and I have many fond memories of her.

Grandpa (I guess that’s what I would have called him) worked on the railroad. For the longest time I misunderstood what working on the railroad meant. I had seen the movie “10000 Black Men Named George” and had imagined him working on the train as a porter which would have been hard enough. Later I learned that he and a lot of others actually worked on the tracks – a hard and extremely dangerous job. These men helped make the railroad industry possible. Many gave their lives. Also he was a resident of Rutherford County, NC. Rural North Carolina was not a safe place to be an African-American in the early 1900s. Knowing this I have since become fascinated by the history of southern railroads and early life in Rutherford County, NC.

Here’s a picture though that no one knows much about. How old is it? Are those his horses? Where is he? It is even not clear enough to really show how he looks.

A lot of my time has been spent doing genealogy and some questions like who his brothers and sisters were have been answered. I even found his draft registration card. On that card I was delighted to find out that I was born on his birthday. This date varies from what is stated on some other records but I will go with the draft registration date of course. The search for more information about Buddy Hart continues.

Here’s your moving checklist! Use this checklist to make sure you remember important moving dates and deadlines. We’ve taken the worry out of moving by thinking of nearly everything!

8 weeks before move
•If you are planning a garage sale, set a date.
•Arrange to transfer school records if you have children.
•Discover schools in your new community by visiting www.theschoolreport.com on the World Wide Web.
•Contact insurance companies to notify them of the move.
•Start a “Move File” for all receipts, papers and estimates related to your move.

6 weeks before move
•Select a van line or rental truck company you will use. Give them tentative pick-up and delivery dates.
•If you are moving to a new city, be sure and ask your attorney, doctor and other providers for referrals and any necessary records.
•If you have any pets, schedule a check-up and be sure and get a copy of their records from the veterinarian.
•Set schedules with real estate agents and/or landlords.
•Schedule a home inspection for your new home

4 weeks before move
•Schedule disconnect dates with your local utility company.
•Notify new utility company of connect dates in the new home.
•If you have a lawnmower or any other power equipment, drain them of oil and gasoline. Moving companies will not move them if they are full.
•Cancel newspaper delivery and trash pickup effective on your move date.
•Give your carpet a good cleaning before all of the furniture is moved into the new address

1 week before move
•Clean out refrigerator and defrost freezer.
•Have your car serviced if you will be driving a long distance.
•Confirm connect dates for utilities in your new home.
•Transfer or close your checking account.
•Be sure to get all items from your safe deposit box.

Moving day
•Spend the entire day at home with the movers.
•Carry any valuables or family heirlooms with you.
•Right before the movers leave, take a final tour of your home, making sure nothing has been left in drawers or closets and that all doors and windows are locked.
•Specify a “Do Not Move” area where you place items you do not want the movers to take with them.
At your new address
•Obtain numbers needed in an emergency such as the fire department and police.
•Check with post office to see if there is any mail that is being held for you.
•Register your cars. Also, register to vote in your new area.
•Enroll children in school.
