I’ve been here three times before…whenever I’m heading for New England…like I am again this year. A couple of days ago I read in an Internet article that there will be 58 million RV’s on the road this weekend and I have no desire to be out there among all the nuts. So, we’re hiding out here through the weekend and expect to move along on Tuesday morning.

Normally we do not have anything on our schedule calendar. However, Mary has a grandson graduating High School in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 6th…so she booked a June 5th flight out of Newark, New Jersey. She wanted a non-stop flight so had to fly out of a major airport. Then back to her home in California for a July 4th family reunion. She is currently scheduled to fly back to rejoin me on July 16th at Hartford, Connecticut.

Once she departs Newark, I’ll continue on with the motorhome to my son’s home in southeastern Connecticut where my oldest grand-daughter graduates High School on June 20th. I’ll visit my son, daughter-in-law and grand kids until Mary returns. We’ll then visit some of my cousins and long-time friends until we depart for the State of Washington on or about August 8th.

The weather has been really crazy…some more!. Two days ago we were sweltering in the heat and humidity. Yesterday it was cold rainy and windy. We hid out inside the motorhome where Mary had the heater running to stay warm. We’ve had a lot of trouble finding nice sunny 69 degree days in 2013. Ever since we started the year deep in south Texas it seems as though it’s been either too hot or too cold. 88 one day…55 the next day kind of thing.

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 125 miles from Winchester, Virginia to Dillsburg, Pennsylvania where we spent the night at American Legion Post #26…

Here’s the usual dinette window photo…

Because of the unusual state boundary configurations in this area…we started our drive in Virginia, then into West Virginia…back into Virginia, then into Maryland and then into Pennsylvania.

The roads were smooth and traffic was relatively light although most of the drive was in a light rain. We will move along later this morning.

Dillsburg is a rather unusual name for a town so I looked it up and here’s what I found…The town is named for Matthew Dill, an immigrant from County Monaghan, Ireland, who settled the town in 1740. The village became a center for local agriculture. And now you know as well.

Along the way yesterday, we passed through Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where we stopped to do some grocery shopping. We’ve both explored Gettysburg battlefield and museum in the past…

Enjoying smooth roads with light traffic is another joy of the full-timing lifestyle!

Went hiking this weekend, and was surprised by the number of mosquitos. Probably should not have been surprised the area was recently flooded with the rains we had in Illinois. But it was still early in the season. They were out in swarms. Consider it a lesson learned. Will post pictures soon from the hike. IT was a new state park for us and some great rock and water features.

The motorhome is still parked at Moose Lodge #1283. We expect to leave here later this morning.

At 11:00 AM yesterday, Mary’s foster-daughter Karen and her family arrived for a visit. They live in Warrenton, Virgina…about 40 away. After chatting for a while in the motorhome we went inside the Moose Club for lunch…

After lunch we decided to visit Old Town Winchester…old Loudoun Street has been made into a pedestrian walking mall…

In the below photo, Glen and four almost-five Adam pose in front of a statue at the old court house…

During the Civil War the City of Winchester changed hands 72 times…13 times in one day! You can read this intriguing history by clicking this Wikipedia link…

While the ladies took Adam to the Children’s Discovery Museum, Glen and I went through the Civil War Museum inside the old court house where a very knowledgeable Carol, the Museum Director, told us a number of interesting stories about the old court house…

While not he largest Civil War Museum I’ve ever been to, this one does an especially good job of presenting the terribleness and ferociousness of the Civil War…

The motorhome is still parked at Moose Lodge #1283. We expect to leave here tomorrow.

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about one mile to the Winchester Visitor Center for local information.

Winchester was the home of famous country singer Patsy Cline whose song “Crazy”, written by Willie Nelson, remains the #1 jukebox-played song of all time. At the center was a small Patsy Cline exhibit. Patsy died in a plane crash at the age of 30 near Camden, Tennessee. We visited that site recently and you can see the Blog entry by clicking this link…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Here’s the poster for Patsy’s last performance. She died on Tuesday March 5, 1963…

Then we drove the about two miles to her grave site at Shenandoah Memorial Park…

From there about three miles to Patsy’s childhood home at 608 Kent Street…

Where docents Patricia (Patsy’s first cousin) and Pam (Patsy’s second cousin) told us Patsy stories. No photography was allowed in the house…

About three blocks away to Gaunt’s Drug Store where Patsy worked behind the no-longer-there soda fountain in the early 1950′s…

This photo was taken somewhere in Costa Rica during my 343 day, 16,000+ mile RV trip through Mexico and Central America in 2004. It took more than four hours to travel this 40 mile road. It wasn’t a matter of trying to decide which potholes to avoid, but rather which ones to drive through. Some were as much as 12 inches deep! My travel companion Bob Gambol can be seen on the left side of his motorhome inspecting for damage…

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 140 miles from Grafton, West Virginia to Winchester, Virgi

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 140 miles from Grafton, West Virginia to Winchester, Virginia. Due to the configuration of state boundaries along the way we passed through Maryland for only eight miles. During that time we crested the highest point on U.S.Highway 50 in the east…Backbone Mountain at 3,095 feet elevation.

For numerous miles and in numerous places the road remained very narrow curvy and rough. It’s been many years since the original pavement and over the years patch upon patch has been applied with no apparent concern for smoothness of the finished product. Many times our speed was to be required to be less than 20 miles per hour.

Here are some of the photos I took along the way…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

At one point we had to deal with 5 miles of 9% of both upgrade and downgrade…

I had originally planned to spend the night in Romney, West Virginia about 40 miles west of Winchester. However, both the American Legion and Moose parking lots were too small with uneven grade. So we continued on to Winchester where we are parked at the rear of Moose Lodge #1283…

Where they have a delightful bank of tall trees to the west where we can hide from the blazing afternoon sun. Here’s the usual dinette window photo…

Yesterday it was 86 degrees with 87 forecast for today and 86 tomorrow with equivalent humidity. Too danged hot and humid for my liking!!!

We expect to depart on Thursday.

Enjoying wide and smooth roads with no 18 wheelers is another joy of the full-timing lifestyle!

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 30 miles from Clarksburg to Tygart Lake State Park near Grafton, West Virginia. As soon as we left Clarksburg, U.S. Highway 50 dropped from four to two lanes.

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

The grades, both up and down became steeper and curvier as we advance into the Appalachian Mountains..

Leaving highway 50, the route to Tygart Lake State Park took us on streets with only inches to spare between telephone poles and vehicles…

After what seemed like forever…we finally got there. Between the small, tight campground and the unevenness of the ground it took about an hour to finally get settled in…

Here’s the usual dinette window photo…

Here’s what my neighbor had to do to both front wheels to level his rig…

Of 14 campsites, there were only three RV’s…

In the end, it proved to be a very quiet and relaxing spot. The lake was not visible from our campsite…

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 60 miles from Parkersburg to Clarksburg, West Virginia. 99% of the drive was on U.S. Highway 50. Basically a four lane, mostly straight east-bound with lots of ups and downs…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

As we go further east the cities are getting older and the streets narrower. They were not made for a wide-body motorhome. When I drove drove this street, I barely had room to get past the parked cars…

We parked in an alley next to VFW Post #573…

Here’s the usual dinette photo…not exciting. I wondered how many years ago it was built…

After settling in, we went inside for lunch…

During lunch we asked the locals what’s to see and do in Clarksburg. They all replied…not much. It seems the VFW is the hot spot in town. So we decided to walk around a bit and discovered this was the birthplace of Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson…a famous Confederate General who stood his ground like a stone wall…hence the name. He died at the Battle of Chancellorsville…

Believe it or not we’ve made it all the way to the Columbia River Gorge, the very tip of northern Oregon, and the banks of the massive estuary that divides Oregon from Washington. During our trip north we’ve followed I-84 and the footsteps of emigrants who bravely forged their way west along this very trail in the mid-1800′s. Pretty cool stuff!

The 1843 Oregon Trail Map

For those not in the know, the ~2,000-mile (3,200 km) Oregon trail was a historic migration trail that started in Missouri and led west to the “Garden Of the World” (or so it was rumored). The first big migration happened in 1843 and by 1869 over 400,000 settlers, ranchers, farmers, miners and their families had made the trip, most of them walking all the way next to their oxen-driven carts. Now, that’s what I call a hike! This year we picked up our first taste of the trail at Three Island Crossing State Park, ID and have followed it ever since (one day I’d love to follow the whole thing).

It’s a tad easier to drive the thing in an RV, I tell ‘ya

The East end of the Columbia River Gorge

And getting towards the middle…prettier and prettier

Our tire delay in Boise put us few days behind schedule. Originally I’d planned several additional stops on I-84, including some boondocking at John Day Dam (a fabulous boondocking spot, by the way), but we decided to shorten our stops and get to the middle of the Gorge as soon as we could so we could stay on-track for our June bookings on the coast. We did a quick lay-over in Emigrant Springs State Park (review coming) and then hightailed it up the road to Memaloose State Park where we are currently nestled in an awesome waterfront site. The forecast calls for a mixed bag of grey, rain & sunny weather over the next few days (pretty typical for this time of year), but we can watch the boats on the river from our window when it drizzles and lounge on the lawn with our cocktails when the sun comes out. Not too shabby!

I’ll be getting more of this ALL summer!

And you know what…we’re in OREGON!! Can’t tell you how darn excited we are to be back here. It’s actually funny to recollect that Oregon was never one of the states we planned on visiting in the RV when we started this fulltime journey. Can’t exactly say why, but it just didn’t make “the list”. The only reason we ended up here was because of our slide troubles in 2011 which started a mad 1,000 mile dash to Eugene. In a way, it was the start of our own migration to the “Garden of The World” and the whole state turned out to be a totally unexpected, totally wonderful surprise that’s kept us coming back ever since. With the heat creeping up down south and fire-season starting elsewhere, we’re gonna be looking forward to yet another cool, relaxing summer in wonderful Oregon. Let the adventures begin….

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 60 miles from Point Pleasant to Parkersburg, West Virginia. I began in West Virginia and ended in West Virginia, but because of the way the Ohio River zig-zags, most of the drive occurred on Ohio State Highway 7 that had very light traffic and ran alongside the Ohio River a good part of the way.

Before leaving Point Pleasant we had some morning fog so I went outside to see what I could see…and this is what I saw…

We crossed back into Ohio over this pretty bridge as seen from a Wal-Mart parking lot…

Going across the bridge…

Along the way we passed through Pomeroy, Ohio with the Ohio River on the right…

On this bridge we crossed the Ohio River into Parkersburg, West Virginia…

Where we ended up at a very friendly VFW Post #1212…

Here’s the usual dinette window photo…

Getting up close to the dinette window and looking down I could see a small stream and told Mary we are parked on waterfront property!

Other than the excessive heat and humidity we enjoyed a nice stay.

We will move along later this morning.

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 65 miles from Ashland, Kentucky to Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Most of the drive occurred on Ohio State Highway 7 that had very light traffic and for the most part ran alongside the Ohio River.

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Leaving Ashland we crossed the Ohio River on this blue bridge into Ohio. The green bridge on the left carries the traffic from Ohio into Kentucky…

On Highway 7 with the Ohio River on our right…

From Gallipolis, Ohio we crossed the Ohio River on the Silver Memorial Bridge…

which replaced the Silver Bridge…

which collapsed in 1967 killing 47 people due to a failure of these components…

Point Pleasant is at the confluence of the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers. The below Google Earth image shows the area. X marks our camping spot at Krodel Park and M the Point Pleasant River Museum which we visited. The Silver Memorial Bridge is lower left…
