A jaunty jalopy ride down a dusty Kansas road to a former lover’s funeral was all it took to rope conman, Moses Pray (Ryan O’Neal), into meeting one of the most special ladies his puny life might ever know. Shot in glorious black and white and boasting a sharp wit set rakishly against bleak Depression-era Midwestern textures and scenery, director Peter Bogdanovich (“The Last Picture Show,” “What’s Up, Doc?”) weaves up a homespun adventure with “Paper Moon” (1973). “Paper Moon” is a very welcome departure off the beaten path…and onto an even more beaten path with two guides that scarcely know where they’re headed in life let alone the road.

Moses Pray travels the American Midwest and cons recent widows into believing that their dearly departed husbands have purchased Bibles for them. Genuinely touched that their loved ones would have been so piously generous in their final days, they gladly pay the difference (minus the original fictitious down-payment Pray alleges their husbands have already spent). It’s an easy gig with easy money, made easier by Pray’s seeming lack of conscience, but it gets a lot more complicated after a visit to the funeral of a woman he once loved (she was a prostitute). Orphaned Addie Loggins (played by 8-year-old Tatum O’Neal) is the spittin’ image of ol’ Moses (no coincidence, they were father and daughter in real life) and the old biddies at the funeral shame the con-artist into taking little Addie with him to her aunt’s house. Reluctantly he obliges.

Moses feverishly denies the remote possibility that he is the girl’s father, but the stone-faced, quick-witted tomboy, Addie, soon finds her way into the conman’s life (he takes Addie’s money and she knows it and essentially she demands he pay her back or else she’ll tell the police). The two form an uneasy alliance and turn out to make a pretty good con team. Addie’s added innocence to Moses’ scam pays off well for the shifty duo (despite Addie’s stubborn moral compass that she employs on certain occasions) and they set their sights higher and con their way across the state. In the eyes of the viewer, these two unlikely and extremely stubborn characters were made for each other.

The movie follows Moses and Addie through squabbles and squalls—as when buxom stripper, Miss Trixie Delight (played by the always enjoyable Madeline Kahn) makes her move to use and abuse an all-too willing Moses and it’s up to Addie to break it up. Between Moses’ fast-talking and trouble-making, it’s all little Addie can do to keep the plan going and still have time for a smoke. Even if Moses may never admit he is her father, they become a very formidable family unit. At the end of the day they have nowhere else to turn but to each other.

I applaud any movie that makes us fall in love with lowly shysters and “Paper Moon” is no exception. Moses Pray is plain diabolical (if a bit slipshod), and Addie Loggins proves her precocious mettle against many an odd. Tatum O’Neal is the real star of this picture and her deadpan performance as Addie notably garnered her the Academy Award for best supporting actor (against co-star Kahn and other child actor, Linda Blair for “The Exorcist”). This film may be accused of wearing its heart on its sleeves, but Bogdanovich makes it really work. This film earns its sweetness. “Paper Moon” is fun and sweet and humorous and insanely likable. The script, performances, and the sumptuous cinematography all combine wonderfully well to transport us back to the Dust Bowl era in Middle America, when religion was in and wallets wore thin. I encourage you to seek out this smarmy but sweet little treasure out. “Paper Moon” is a charmer that can warm the most cynical of hearts…because that’s what it does to the cynical characters that inhabit the film.

At least Farrah managed to reinvent herself. I, for one, was put off by Farrah’s grimace-like smile in her famous poster, and her skill as an actress was far below par.

Her performances called to mind the words of critic John Simon regarding another blond beauty queen turned actress: “She came across like one of those inanimate objects, say, a cupboard or a grandfather clock, which is made in certain humorous short subjects to act, through trick photography.”

But Farrah’s opaque acting style served her well when she played the emotionally-stunted killer in Small Sacrifices…

Anatomy of a Murder | Otto Preminger, 1959
American One-sheet by Saul Bass

One of America’s foremost poster artists of recent times, who was perhaps better known for his work on title sequences rather than posters, was New York-born graphic designer Saul Bass. Bass came to fame after creating the controversial title sequence Otto Preminger’s The Man with the Golden Arm in 1955, and later went on to work closely with Alfred Hitchock, contributing to the films North By Northwest, Psycho and Vertigo. The style Bass usually employed for poster design concentrated on primary colours and the use of bold shapes. It is a style that is entirely unique, and has birthed many an iconic poster including this 1959 one -sheet for the Preminger movie Anatomy of a Murder. Once again, the design is very much a simple one – two basic colours and an image of a man lying prone – yet is strikingly effective. It is a design that was actually copied in 1995 for the Spike Lee film Clockers – an act that Bass regarded as theft despite it being intended as an homage.

Barry Lyndon | Stanley Kubrick, 1975
American One-sheet by Charles Gehm

This intricate poster for the Stanley Kubrick film Barry Lyndon was created by American artist and illustrator Charles Gehm in 1975. Unfortunately for Gehm, it is a poster that has been largely overlooked in favour of Jouineau Bourduge’s classic black and white print, which is actually the illustration still used for DVD covers today. In this case it may well be that the poster was deemed “too intricate” for wide usage, which is unfortunate considering the attention to detail and obvious work that has gone into it. That said, it can be noticed that the font used on both posters and during the opening credits of the film itself is in fact always the same – perhaps something decided on by Warner Bros. before hiring both artists – as is the depiction of both a pistol and a rose. Gehm’s poster might not be quite as iconic as Bourduge’s creation, but for me it better represents the epic and ultimately timeless nature of Kubrick’s celebrated tale.

The Shawshank Redemption | Frank Darabont, 1994

Emotional figures standing boldly in the rain is a common theme both in movies and on movie posters: from Cool Hand Luke to The Matrix, it is an image that has been re-imagined time and time again. Perhaps the most memorable of all these scenes is the moment in Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption when our protagonist, Andy Dufresne, finally escapes from Shawshank Prison after crawling through half a mile of raw sewage. The climactic music soars, the camera pulls out, and Andy drops to his knees to embrace the free world once again. The rain is there, as usual, to add something cinematic to what is a dramatic moment, but it also helps illustrate this idea of escaping from the prison and embracing nature after so long. It is by far and away the most iconic moment in a film full of memorable ones, and thus was probably the obvious choice to be immortalised in the poster.

Fargo | Joel & Ethan Coen, 1996
American One-sheet by Creative Partnership/Optic Nerve

I’ve heard some say that this poster is too gimmicky to be great, but for me the gimmick is precisely what makes it so wonderful. It was one of the early posters attached to Joel and Ethan Coen’s Fargo, and is of course a play on the film’s tagline: “A Homespun Murder Story” which essentially just points out – if the title isn’t enough of a hint – that the setting of Fargo, North Dakota is an important aspect of the story here. Unfortunately for all of us, distributors Gramercy Pictures pulled the poster from theaters very early on for fear that movie-goers would think the film too “arty”. Instead, it was replaced with a bolder and more accessible poster with the infinitely less entertaining tagline of  “Small town, big crime, dead cold”. While we should perhaps be thankful that this move only exposed more of the American public to what is an excellent film, it is still a shame that such a unique poster was lost to the corporate winds in such a way.

Attack of the 50 Foot Woman | Nathan Juran, 1958
American One-sheet by Reynold Brown

Reynold Brown was a prolific American artist who began his career drawing comic books in the thirties before moving on to magazine and advertisement illustrations and the designing of book covers after the second world war. Following this, Brown became a teacher in California which led to him landing a job designing posters for Universal Pictures. Throughout the fifties and sixties he painted a number of memorable posters for such Universal hits as Creature from the Black Lagoon, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Ben-Hur, Spartacus, The Alamo and of course Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. Brown’s roots in art are of the realist mould, and I believe this is an influence you can clearly see in most of his poster work, especially here. There is a painstaking quality that can be found in each of his many posters, despite the often fantastical nature of the films upon which these posters are based.

Jacqueline Bisset

 

 

 

Jacqueline Bisset (born 13 September 1944) is a British actress. She has been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards and an Emmy Award. Her popular films include Bullitt (1968), Airport (1970), The Deep (1977), and Class (1983). In more recent years, she has appeared in several television productions, most notably the FX series Nip/Tuck in 2006.

In 1967, Bisset was cast in the movie Two for the Road with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney. Next, she participated in the James Bond satire, Casino Royale (1967), as Miss Goodthighs. In 1968, Mia Farrow dropped out of the movie The Detective (1968) opposite Frank Sinatra, and the role went to Bisset. That same year, she was cast in her breakout role as Steve McQueen’s girlfriend in the hit action film Bullitt. She was one of the many stars in the blockbuster disaster film Airport (1970), which co-starred Dean Martin, Burt Lancaster, Jean Seberg, and Helen Hayes among others and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Bisset often appeared with her leading men in more than one film, such as Albert Finney, Paul Newman and Anthony Perkins. She co-starred with Newman and Perkins in The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, with Newman in When Time Ran Out, with Finney in Two for the Road, Under the Volcano and the ensemble mystery Murder on the Orient Express, also starring Perkins and Sean Connery.

She is the main character in Luigi Comencini’s La donna della domenica in 1975. In 1977, Bisset made strides towards becoming a better-known entertainer in America with her movie The Deep, co-starring Robert Shaw and Nick Nolte, where swimming underwater wearing nothing under her T-shirt helped make the film a box office success, leading the producer Peter Guber to say, “That T-shirt made me a rich man,”. At the time, Newsweek declared her “the most beautiful film actress of all time.” About that time, a small film Bisset had made some years earlier was re-released in the United States under the title Secrets. That movie featured the only extensive nude scenes of Bisset’s career and the producers cashed in on her fame.

By 1978, she was a household name. She earned her first Golden Globe nomination for the comedy Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe? Soon thereafter, she played in the movies Rich and Famous (1981) with Candice Bergen, Class (1983) with Rob Lowe and Under the Volcano (1984) with Albert Finney, for which she earned her a second Golden Globe nomination. In 1996, she was nominated for a César Award, for her role in La Cérémonie. Bisset has worked with such directors as François Truffaut, John Huston, George Cukor, and Roman Polanski. Several of her movies are French or Italian productions.

Bisset has appeared in made-for-TV movies, especially during the last decade. She received an Emmy Award nomination for the 1999 miniseries Joan of Arc. Other notable projects include the Emmy-nominated epics Jesus (1999) and In the Beginning (2001) with Martin Landau. She has also made guest appearances on Ally McBeal and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. One of her later TV movies, in 2003, was America’s Prince: The John F. Kennedy Jr. Story, in which she portrayed Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. In 2005, she appeared in Domino with Keira Knightly. Bisset’s most recent television work was a recurring role as the mysterious James, during the fourth season of the FX series Nip/Tuck. She starred in the lead role of Boaz Yakin’s Death in Love which premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and is about “a Jewish concentration-camp survivor whose willing romance with the camp’s Nazi doctor—a man who tortured her fellow prisoners—destroys the lives of her American husband and their two sons 50 years later”.

Looking incredibly grown up in a shimmering silver full-length gown, 17-year-old Selena Gomez was one of the stand-outs on the red carpet for Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

The star of Wizards of Waverly Place joined several of her cast mates at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live for the event that honors achievement in TV in areas such as music and art direction, and guest-starring roles.

Tina Fey – a winner for Outstanding Guest Actress in A Comedy Series (as Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live), Jamie Lynn Siegler, Ashley Tisdale and Ryan O’Neal also attended.

Ei bine, a fost o experienţă care m-a făcut să mă conving încă o dată că nu sunt făcut pentru această lume, pentru această epocă. “De ce?”, aţi putea întreba din nou. Răspuns: pentru că nu ştiu dacă “se cuvine” să vărs lacrimi în timpul unui simplu film. Chiar dacă acesta oglindeşte excepţional de profund cel mai nobil sentiment uman: dragostea (iubirea)!
Vă mai aduceţi aminte când aţi văzut acest film, “Love Story”? Acum doi-trei ani? Acum 10 – 15 ani? Acum 30 de ani? Sau nu cu mult după apariţie, pe la începutul anilor ‘70? Ce vârstă aveaţi? Eraţi copii, adolescenţi, proaspăt căsătoriţi? Detalii nu neglijabile. Părerea mea. Sau poate nu ştiţi care e acest film? Imposibil! Dacă nu altfel, îl puteţi identifica în amintirile dvs. graţie superbei teme muzicale compuse de Francis Lai şi care a devenit o bucată cert clasică şi obligatorie pentru cei care se ştiu la pian.
Cred că nu mai există vreo peliculă care să transmită atât de bine sentimentele şi diversele trăiri ale celor doi îndrăgostiţi, Jenna (interpretată de Ali MacGraw) şi Oliver (jucat superb de către Ryan O’Neal). Poate doar ecranizarea din anii ‘90 a “Marilor Speranţe” (cu Gwyneth Paltrow şi Ethan Hawke) mi-a mai răscolit atât de mult eul sentimental.
Adaug la cele de mai sus obişnuitul conflict dintre lumea oamenilor simpli (Jenny) şi cea a bogaţilor americani (Oliver, a 4-a generaţie a unei reputate şi înstărite familii). Condimentul, zic eu, principal din scenariu este tensiunea eternă dintre Oliver şi tatăl lui. Tânărul student (şi apoi avocat) de Harvard este tratat milităreşte de către tatăl său, căruia i se adresează cu apelativul ‘domnule’ (’sir’), tată căruia nu îi convine că unicul fiu şi-a ales drept soţie o fată care nu e de acelaşi nivel social. Oliver, însă, preferă să renunţe la privilegiile apartenenţei la o familie bogată şi alege viaţa de soţ simplu şi muncitor al lui Jenny (care renunţă la o bursă pariziană pentru a rămâne cu el).
Aţi spune că totul este perfect pentru cei doi îndrăgostiţi. Scenaristul (Erich Segal) a considerat, însă, că “Love Story” necesită o tragedie: fata are o boală letală şi nu mai are mult de trăit. Doctorii îl sfătuiesc pe Oliver să se comporte natural şi recomandă un tratament costisitor pentru încetinirea inevitabilului. După o lungă perioadă în care nu a mai vorbit cu tatăl lui, Oliver se vede nevoit să îi ceară bani împrumut pentru a putea plăti tratamentul soţiei sale. Bătrânul îi dă banii, nu înainte de a-l întreba pentru ce anume are nevoie de ei. Oliver nu vrea să îi spună, iar tatăl înţelege că fiul său trebuie să rezolve o problemă de sarcină a unei amante. În cele din urmă, Jenny moare, nu înainte de a încerca din răsputeri să nu pară tristă. Şi totuşi…
Penultima scenă este devastatoare: Oliver coboară şi iese din spital, iar la uşă se întâlneşte cu nimeni altul decât tatăl lui. Acesta a aflat pentru ce anume a avut nevoie Oliver de bani şi a venit la spital să îşi ofere ajutorul. Prea târziu. “Jenny a murit!”, îi spune fiul său şi nu îl lasă pe bătrân să spună că îi pare rău. Motto-ul lui Jenny a fost: “Iubirea înseamnă să nu fii nevoit să spui niciodată că îţi pare rău”…
Una peste alta, dacă vreţi să aveţi parte de o porţie sănătoasă de plâns sau dacă, pur şi simplu, doriţi să (re)vedeţi unul dintre cele mai frumoase filme de dragoste din secolul 20, uitaţi-vă la “Love Story”.
Ca o chestie de ironie a sorţii, actorul Ryan O’Neal şi-a pierdut soţia (pe actriţa Farah Fawcett), în iunie 2009, tot în urma unei bătălii a acesteia cu o boală mortală.

It certainly wasn’t in parenting because everyone knows that the two basic rules of parenting are:

1)  Shhhh……Mommy’s on the phone

                               and

2)  Shhhh……Mommy’s dead and Daddies grieving…..spread.

When the love of someone’s life dies, you expect to see a negative Pluto (death) aspect in the chart. Not so, with Ryan O’Neal. Transiting Pluto not only isn’t negative, it’s trining both his Sun and Venus, exact, at the time of Farrah Fawcett’s death.

He does have a negative progression between his progressed Mercury and his natal Mercury – which rules brothers and sisters, short trips, scandals, contracts. So, I’m guessing some furtherance of scandal or a contract going sour might befall him. His progressed Sun is also inconjunct (compromise) his natal Moon (feelings) so maybe he is emotionally conflicted. However, the transiting Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune are conjunct his natal Moon. What’s up with that? Jupiter conjunct your Moon is a good thing. Chiron is called the Wounded Healer. Is he getting healed? And Neptune conjunct your Moon is kind of dreamy — allowing you to see things they way you want to see them.

There is also a strange connection between him and Alana Stewart. They are both Taurus, and both are heavily invested in all things financial above and beyond being Taurus. Both are also islands, meaning it’s difficult to reach them. I’m not saying they are romantically linked — just that they may have mutual goals.

One of the two signs Taurus has the most difficulty relating to is Aquarius, Farrah’s sign and Redmond’s sign. Ryan does have his Moon and Mars in Aquarius which is the only reason I can see that he and Farrah would have ever hooked up. This is a cold placement for the Moon, although it can produce people who are very humanitarian.

Overall, O’Neal is an extremely complicated personality. He probably doesn’t even understand himself. Many of his planets are involved in what astrologers call a T-square. Two planets are in opposition and then a third planet squares both the opposed planets. That third planet is called an apex planet, and O’Neal has five apex planets. Most people can be summed up by one apex planet. So when you have five, one thing or two or three cannot sum you up. You begin to defy definition except that an apex planet is an area of weakness. The Sun makes you egocentric. Venus makes you feel unloved. Saturn makes you overly ambitious. Jupiter makes you over-inflated. Uranus makes you a law unto yourself. See? Very complex.

Currently his chart is in pretty good shape with progressed Mars sextiling his Uranus and progressed Venus sextiling Uranus and Neptune. That’s a lot of the unpredictable planet, Uranus, except these are good aspects. Uranus rules radio, television, and all things electronic. Perhaps, being in the news will boost his career, or it already has? Or it will arouse his creativity (Neptune)?

Besides the possibility of a little bad press, I would look for Ryan to keep on keeping on. He has absolutely no intention of changing or regretting anything and definitely, there’s no possibility of introspection.

Just when I thought Joe Jackson (Michael’s “father”) might be my poster boy for reprehensible parenting, you’ve come along to challenge him for the honor.  According to media reports, you tried to pick up your own daughter Tatum at Farrah Fawcett’s funeral, with the one-two punch, “You have a drink?  You have a car?”
 
You are quoted as telling Vanity Fair contributing editor Leslie Bennetts, “I’m a hopeless father. I don’t know why.  I don’t think I was supposed to be a father. Just look around at my work—they’re either in jail or they should be.”  You go on to say that you aren’t in touch with your children any longer and have “never been happier.”
 
Here’s a psychological newsflash:  Not recognizing your own daughter is the kind of thing that gets etched on your tombstone, under the heading SCUMBAG.  Trying to pick her up at Farrah’s funeral—or any woman’s—goes right underneath that entry.  And stating publicly that you’re happier not seeing or speaking to your own kids makes it a Trifecta.  You’re gonna keep some guy who etches letters in granite very busy.
 
No wonder Tatum was hooked on heroin and Redmond is in jail for a drug offense.  You obviously have a really bad habit of inflicting pain on people, and they turn to one or another intoxicant to try to relieve it. I mean, it’s one thing to try picking up your adult daughter, it’s another to do whatever you did to her as a little girl.  Exactly what was that, Ryan?
 
I know, you think I’m being a little hard on you, but I’m not. 
 
See, when I use the term “scumbag,” I mean it in the clinical sense, and with no hatred toward you, whatsoever.  I mean that something happened to you in your own personal development that led you to think so little of yourself and so little of others that you can’t see the beauty it is to bring a new life into this world and be able to nourish it.  You must question your own self-worth so deeply that now the only thing you can pay attention to is how to pump yourself up narcissistically and avoid the deeper questions you have about whether you’re worth anything at all—to yourself or anyone else.
 
You tell Ms. Bennetts that you’d “take back” your kids—as in, return them to their Maker; as in, kill them off.  Well, you came close, setting them up for their drug abuse.  But here’s the thing:  The real ambivalence you have at core isn’t about them at all.  It’s about you and whether you deserve to exist.  I don’t believe you could have been well-loved and turn out unable to love.  Your own family somehow made you wonder whether you deserved to be born, whether you were really a keeper.  How?
 
You did deserve to live. You were once an innocent child, full of human potential and the capacity to love yourself and others endlessly.  You were cheated of that potential, and I am sorry that happened to you.  Now, facing the particular traumas you lived through and feeling all the pain of having lived through them is the only way back to being fully human.
 
Life is an amazing journey and, even with you facing leukemia, the end isn’t written until a man’s last acts and final words.  You can still reclaim your humanity and capacity to love and offer it to the children you brought into this world.  And then very different words might mark your resting place and very different things may be said of you.
 
I have seen people resurrected by embracing the truth at 18, and at 48, and at 78.  It is never, ever too late. 

The Zero Effect is one of my favorite movies probably because it is based on the great Sherlock Holmes short story A Scandal in Bohemia by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  The film stars Bill Pullman as Daryl Zero (Sherlock Homes), a gifted but strange private detective who is socially awkward and inept.  His “Dr. Watson” is portrayed as Steve Arlo (Ben Stiller).  Zero keeps himself locked in his apartment where, like Holmes and his violin, he composes dreadful songs on his guitar and subsists on a diet of tuna, Tab, and amphetamines (Holmes’ drug use included morphine and other narcotics).

Paralleling A Scandal in Bohemia, Zero is retained by Gregory Stark (Ryan O’Neal), a wealthy man who hires Zero to investigate who is blackmailing him.  During the investigation Zero ventures outside of his apartment encountering Gloria Sullivan (Kim Dickens).  Gloria is based on the character Irene Adler, the only woman who had the wit to outdo Holmes, and he admired her for it.  Sullivan is the blackmailer (like Adler) and as the film progresses, they begin to fall in love.  While in the end of this movie Zero bests his Adler, because of his love and admiration for Sullivan he lets her go to leave the country with the blackmail money and hide from Stark who alludes to killing her.

This film was sort of a sleeper by mainstream Hollywood box office standards.  I give it a rose.  What gets this movie out of the dung heap is probably because I loved Doyle’s A Scandal in Bohemia as well as Zero’s eccentricities.  The movie’s storyline is much more interesting than most of the garbage seen in today’s films, network TV shows and porno movies.
I was also glad to see Ryan O’Neal again in something decent since the last time he starred in anything pleasing was Irreconcilable Differences (1984), Green Ice (1981) and So Fine (1981), all three in my opinion classics.

Zero Effect is well worth watching and if you have half a brain you won’t  want your two hours back.

Somebody needs to burn this film.

In this satire skewering Hollywood movie making, Eric Idle stars as a film editor who gets a shot at directing a big-budget film (starring Sylvester Stallone and Whoopi Goldberg, no less) but is foiled by his producer (Ryan O’Neal). The premise builds on the age-old showbiz tradition of directors pulling their names from projects and replacing them with “Alan Smithee” credits to show that too many cooks have spoiled the cinematic broth.

OK, so now that the movie is finished with let me just start by saying this is a horrible film. I heard that this film was basically called “the worst film of all-time”, and liked swooped seven awards at The Golden Raspberry’s, and I wanted to give it a shot and actually see for myself. Now I wish I never made that decision.

Basically this film has a Mockumentary feel to it, like The Office or This Is Spinal Tap…., but this film takes that and moves it completely nowhere we expected. The film had little scenes that were just interviews that seemed to talk about the same crap after all this time. They were either talking about the director or the movie, or they were showing scenes that had nothing to do with the story at hand.

The worst thing about this film that really just made me want to kill something was it’s annoying on-going jokes about bigger and better stars. I understand a little pun joke here and there but once you do the same joke in a different format then I start to get really annoyed. The jokes labeled around stars such as Hugh Grant, OJ Simpson, and others I can’t remember cause there were so many.

I hated how this film tried to be funny but also insightful in a way, and does neither. The film tries showing how people in the film industry react with one another and really it just doesn’t play out to where we get what is the message behind it all.

Maybe the only the only thing saving this movie is it’s lead performance from Ryan O’Neal. Out of this whole film he is the only good thing as he is so condescending and arrogant that he actually feels like a real person that you just hate. There are little cameos in this film that are just meaningful and make no addition to the story other than just having another big name for the card.

Consensus: Irony has never been placed so wisely. This film should’ve been burned right from the moment it was conceived. The comedy is so obvious that it’s just dumb, and there is absolute no insight about Hollywood that we haven’t seen before.

Las estrellas de Hollywood no son siempre tan rutilantes como estamos acostumbrados a verlas. Drogas, posesión de armas, conducción temeraria, escándalo público, hurto, prostitución, maltratos o elevado índice de alcohol en sangre son algunas de las lindezas que han provocado que rostros muy famosos acabaran siendo detenidos.

Son tantos y tantas los que han acabado esposados que ha sido necesario realizar una pequeña selección, a menudo condicionada por la falta de testimonio gráfico del arresto en cuestión. De ahí que Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ray Liotta, Sean Penn , Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Sylvester Stallone o Roman Polanski, entre muchos otros, se hayan librado de aparecer en esta lista negra.

Tiene derecho a guardar en silencio…

AIDAN QUINN

Quinn fue arrestado por conducir borracho. Dos años después se le declaró culpable, tuvo que pagar 500 dólares de multa y se le retiró el carnet durante tres meses.

AL PACINO

En 1961 y con 21 años Al Pacino fue detenido por estar en posesión de una pistola del calibre 38 y cargada. Parece ser que Pacino pasó tres días en el calabozo y que los cargos fueron retirados posteriormente.

BRAD RENFRO

Tres fueron las veces que el joven Renfro pasó por la comisaría antes de morir en 2008 a los 25 años de edad.

En 1998 fue detenido y acusado por posesión de cocaína y marihuana, en 2000 por intentar robar un yate totalmente drogado y en 2006 cuando quiso comprar heroína a una policía vestido de paisano.

CARMEN ELECTRA

La explosiva Carmen Electra fue detenida en 1999 tras agredir a su ex marido el jugador de la NBA Dennis Rodman.

CHRISTIAN SLATER

Christian Slater también posee un amplio currículum de detenciones. La foto que os mostramos es de diciembre de 1994 cuando fue arrestado en el aeropuerto JFK de Nueva York por tenencia ilícita de armas.

CHRIS KLEIN

Klein, al que pudimos ver en “American Pie” (1999), “American Pie 2″ (2001), “Cuando éramos soldados” (2002) o “El mundo de Leland” (2004), fue detenido en 2005 por conducir borracho. Parece ser que su tasa de alcohol en sangre duplicaba la permitida en el estado de California, lo que le supuso una multa de 1.800 dólares y la obligación de realizar 150 horas de trabajo comunitario.

CHRIS TUCKER

Chris Tucker que interpretó al histérico y excesivo Ruby Rhod de “El quinto elemento” (Luc Besson, 1997)  fue arrestado por exceso de velocidad con el agravante de que no se detuvo ante el aviso de los agentes de policía.

DANIEL BALDWIN

La carrera delictiva de Daniel Baldwin (hermano de Alec) es más prolífica que la cinematográfica. En 1998 fue arrestado por posesión de cocaína tras haberse paseado desnudo por los pasillos del Hotel Plaza de Nueva York. Después de acumular varios arrestos, fue nuevamente detenido en 2006 acusado de haber robado un coche. Aunque posteriormente se demostró que era el vehículo de un amigo, el actor no se libró de pagar una fianza de 20.000 dólares por haber tomado prestado el dichoso coche sin permiso de su colega.

DAVID BOWIE

El cantante y actor David Bowie fue arrestado en 1976 por posesión de marihuana. El “Duque Blanco” se encontraba en un hotel en compañía del también cantante Iggy Pop.

DENNIS HOPPER

En 1975 Hopper sufrió un accidente a consecuencia de su conducción temeraria. Posteriormente fue detenido por no informar a las autoridades de dicho accidente, por huir del lugar de los hechos y por resistencia a la autoridad.

DUDLEY MOORE

Dudley Moore (“10, la mujer perfecta”, “Arthur, el soltero de oro”) fue arrestado en 1994 por violencia de género, aunque su novia, Nicole Richardson, retiró posteriormente los cargos.

EDWARD FURLONG

El John Connor de “Terminator 2″ (1991) y el Danny Vinyard de “American History X” (1998) ha sido otro de esos jóvenes actores que han terminado coqueteando con el alcohol y las drogas. En 2001, Furlong pisó la comisaría en dos ocasiones: una por conducir borracho y otra por hacerlo sin el permiso reglamentario. Este año 2009 su mujer, la actriz Rachel Kneeland, lo ha acusado de agresión y amenazas.

ERIC ROBERTS

Eric Roberts (hermano de Julia) también fue un habitual “visitante” de las comisarías. En 1987 fue arrestado por posesión de cocaína y marihuana y por resistirse a la autoridad. La violencia de género fue el otro delito por el que se le detuvo en 1995.

FATTY ARBUCKLE

La estrella de cine mudo Fatty Arbuckle fue detenido en 1921 como presunto autor de la muerte de la actriz Virginia Rappe. Tras una fiesta en un hotel a la que la joven estaba invitada, comenzó a sentirse mal y murió tres días después de una peritonitis. Una amiga de Rappe y la prensa sensacionalista de la época acusaron falsamente a Arbuckle de ser el causante del fallecimiento por haber violado a la joven con una botella. Aunque fue absuelto, su carrera cinematográfica quedó totalmente arruinada.

FRANK SINATRA

El arresto de Frank Sinatra no deja ser de lo más curioso. Corría el año 1938 y se le detuvo por (parece ser) haber mantenido una relación con una mujer casada. Cómo cambian los tiempos…

GARY DOURDAN

El famoso Warrick Brown de la serie televisiva “C.S.I.” fue detenido cuando pernoctaba en su coche y en el cual se encontró heroína, cocaína, éxtasis y varios tipos de fármacos. Tras pagar una fianza de 5.000 dólares, Dourdan fue puesto en libertad acusado de posesión de narcóticos. El careto de su ficha policial lo dice todo.

GUS VAN SANT

En 2006 el director estadounidense Gus van Sant sufrió un arresto por conducir borracho.

HALEY JOEL OSMENT

El niño que en ocasiones veía muertos a punto estuvo de convertirse en uno de ellos siendo ya mayorcito. Tras estrellar el coche que conducía cerca de su casa, los policías que acudieron al lugar del accidente comprobaron que Osment no sólo iba borracho, sino que hallaron que estaba en posesión de marihuana. En estos momentos es imposible no acordarse de aquel visionario e hilarante vídeo de los de “El informal”.

HEATHER LOCKLEAR

La Sammy Jo de “Dinastía” y la Amanda de “Melrose Place” fue arrestada en 2008 por conducir borracha y con alguna que otra sustancia más en su cuerpo. Aunque se difundió que todo había sido una trampa de una ex empleada de la actriz, el asunto nunca llegó a aclararse. Qué pena que Heather no tuviera tiempo de ir a la peluquería antes de que la fotografiaran para rellenar su ficha policial.

HUGH GRANT

En 1995 Grant fue detenido acusado de conducta indecente (=una prostituta estaba realizándole una felación) y el 2007 volvió a una comisaría de policía por agredir a un paparazzi.

JASON PATRICK

Ir drogado y atacar a uno de los agentes que le detuvieron le supuso un grave problema a Patrick que siempre declaró su inocencia y demandó al susodicho policía. Aunque la oficina del fiscal retiró los cargos, el jurado federal falló a favor del agente.

JEAN FONDA

La reivindicativa Jane Fonda fue arrestada en 1970 en el Aeropuerto Internacional Hopkins de Cleveland. No sólo golpeó a uno de los oficiales de la aduana, sino que en su equipaje se encontraron píldoras de vitaminas y Valium por lo que se le imputó un cargo de tráfico de drogas. Lo absurdo de la acusación se resolvió con un sobreseimiento de los cargos cuando se demostró que esas sustancias eran completamente legales.

JEFFREY DONOVAN

Lo visteis junto a Angelina Jolie en “El intercambio” (Clint Eastwood, 2008) encarnando al Capitán J.J. Jones. El 12 de julio de este año se le detuvo en Miami Beach por conducir borracho y por negarse a realizar la prueba de alcoholemia. Tras pagar 1.000 dólares de fianza, Donovan fue puesto en libertad.

JENNIFER LÓPEZ

La actriz y cantante Jennifer López fue arrestada en 1999  junto a su novio Sean “Puffy” Combs después verse involucrada en un tiroteo en un club nocturno de Manhattan. Tras pasar 14 horas detenida, fue puesta en libertad sin cargos.

JOSH BROLIN

Mientras rodaba la película “W” (2008) de Oliver Stone, Brolin (junto con otros miembros del equipo) acabó con sus huesos en prisión después de haber participado en una pelea en un bar. Tras pagar una fianza de 334 dólares fue puesto en libertad.

JOSHUA JACKSON

Joshua Jackson, que saltó a la fama tras su participación en la serie televisiva ”Dawson crece”, acabó en comisaría en 2002 por soltarle unos cuantos guantazos a un segurata en un partido de hockey.

JULIETTE LEWIS

En comparación con sus otros colegas de profesión, lo de Lewis es una simple anécdota: fue detenida por hallarse en un club nocturno para mayores de edad cuando la actriz sólo tenía 16 años.

KEANU REEVES

En 1993 el futuro Neo de la trilogía “Matrix” fue arrestado por conducir borracho. Reeves tenía 29 años.

KIEFER SUTHERLAND

Kiefer Sutherland, el agente Bauer de la serie televisiva “24”, pasó 48 horas en el calabozo por conducir con unas copichuelas de más lo que le llevó a realizar un cambio de sentido prohibido (estos yanquis fliparían con los vídeos de la DGT). Fue en 2007

LINDSAY LOHAN

La díscola actriz ha sufrido dos arrestos en 2009. En mayo se la detuvo por conducir borracha (estrelló su deportivo contra un seto) y decidió ingresar en una clínica de desintoxicación de la que salió el 5 de octubre pasado. Tres días después Lohan volvía a ser detenida por conducir, nuevamente, bajo los efectos del alcohol y por encontrarse restos de cocaína en su bolsillo. Por más que la amiguísima de Paris Hilton ha declarado que la droga no era suya, ha tenido que desembolsar 30.000 dólares de fianza y deberá comparecer ante el juez.

MACAULAY CULKIN

Uno de esos niños prodigio que no ha sabido crecer en condiciones. En 2004 Culkin fue arrestado por posesión de drogas y quedó en libertad tras pagar una fianza de 6.000 dólares. Atención a su cara de empanado.

MARTIN SHEEN

Parece ser que Martin Sheen, activista declarado, ha sido detenido más de 60 veces por participar en manifestaciones (no autorizadas) de distinta índole. Como no tenemos espacio para incluir 60 fotos, ahí os dejamos éstas dos como muestra.

MATT DILLON

El actor fue detenido en 2008 por exceso de velocidad. No deja de ser paradójico que Dillon fuese nominado al Globo de oro y al Oscar al Mejor Actor Secundario por la película “Crash” (Paul Haggis, 2005)…

MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY

En 1999 McConaughey decidió darse unos bailoteos por su barrio completamente desnudo. Al parecer el actor había fumado marihuana (hecho que no pudo ser demostrado, aunque su careto en la foto casi no deja lugar a dudas) y se le arrestó. Tras pagar una fianza de 1.000 dólares, fue puesto en libertad.

MEL GIBSON

El actor-director se ganó una sonora detención (segunda) en 2006 por conducir borracho por una autopista de Malibú. Durante su arresto se comportó de forma violenta e insultante (“los judíos son los responsables de todas las guerras en el mundo”). Después de desembolsar los 5.000 dólares de la fianza y quedar en libertad, Gibson comenzó a recibir ayuda de Alcohólicos Anónimos.

MICHELLE RODRÍGUEZ

Michelle Rodríguez, actriz de la serie televisiva “Perdidos” ha sido arrestada en dos ocasiones. En 2003 se la detuvo por conducir borracha y con el permiso caducado y en 2005, nuevamente, por coger el coche con una copas de más. En esta última detención iba acompañada de Cynthia Watros, otras de las actrices que participan en la serie citada anteriormente.

MICKEY ROURKE

Mickey Rourke ha visitado en dos ocasiones la trena. En 1994 se le detuvo por agredir a la también actriz Carré Otis (su esposa en esos momentos) y en 2007 por conducir su moto en estado de embriaguez.

NICK NOLTE

En 2008 fue arrestado por conducir bajo los efectos del alcohol cuando transitaba por una calle de Malibú. Sobran los comentarios observando el aspecto que presenta Nolte en la foto.

O. J. SIMPSON

Lo de este tío clama al cielo… Después de librarse de la cárcel (que no de pagar una indemnización de 33,5 millones de dólares por daños y perjuicios) tras los asesinatos, en 1994, de su ex mujer Nicole Brown Simpson y el amigo de ésta Ronald Goldman, Simpson fue detenido por el presunto robo de una colección de objetos deportivos en un casino de Las Vegas. Al colega se le acusaba, entre otras lindezas, de robo con arma de fuego, asalto con arma de fuego, conspiración para cometer un hurto y hurto con un arma de fuego.

RANDY QUAID

¿Recordáis a aquel aviador borracho que se convierte en un héroe en los minutos finales de la película ”Independence Day” (1996)? Pues se trata del actor estadounidense Randy Quaid, hemano del también actor Dennis Quaid.

Randy y su esposa Evi fueron detenidos el pasado mes de septiembre de 2009 acusados de estafa por no haber pagado la cuenta de un hotel de Santa Barbara que ascendía a 10.000 dólares. Después de  abonar la fianza, fueron puestos en libertad.

RIP TORN

¿Que quién es este tío con esta pinta tan horrible? Para que os situéis rápidamente Rip Torn es el actor que interpretó a Z en la película “Men in Black” (1997) y en su secuela “Men in Black 2″ (2002). Aquí el amigo fue detenido en 2004 por conducir borracho y volvió a pasar por la comisaría en 2006 tras protagonizar un accidente con su automóvil. Al negarse a someterse a la prueba de alcoholemia, se le acusó de ir ebrio.

RYAN O’NEAL

Durante una investigación que tenía como objetivo a Redmond O’Neal (hijo de Ryan y Farrah Fawcett), la policía registró la casa del actor encontrando metanfetamina. Ambos fueron arrestados por posesión de drogas.

ROBERT DOWNEY JR.

Desde finales de la década de los 80, el actor sucumbió a las drogas y al alcohol. Ya en 1980 asistió por primera vez a un centro de rehabilitación que abandonó al poco tiempo sin obtener ningún resultado.

En 1996 fue arrestado en Los Ángeles por exceso de velocidad; por posesión de marihuana, cocaína, heroína y crack; y por encontrársele una pistola descargada. Fue puesto en libertad condicional tras pagar una fianza, pero antes de ser citado a juicio por esos cargos, fue nuevamente detenido, al entrar por error en casa de su vecina. Había consumido tanto alcohol y droga, que necesitó de asistencia sanitaria para recobrar el conocimiento.

Fue enviado a un centro de rehabilitación mientras estaba a la espera de juicio, pero tan solo cuatro días después, fue detenido por los agentes de seguridad del lugar unas horas después de fugarse.

En 2000 fue arrestado nuevamente por fumar crack y beber alcohol y en 2001 por vagar por las calles bajo los efectos de varios narcóticos.

Parece ser que desde 2002 Downey Jr. ha logrado mantenerse “limpio” y alejado de las cárceles.

RUSSELL CROWE

El actor australiano no se caracteriza precisamente por su paciencia. En 2005 fue arrestado en un hotel de Nueva York después de lanzarle un teléfono a un conserje. Parece ser que Crowe se puso nervioso porque no podía comunicarse con su mujer en Australia.

SAM SHEPARD

El actor (“París, Texas”; “Magnolias de acero”; “El informe pelícano”; ”Black Hawk derribado”; entre otras) y dramaturgo fue detenido por conducir borracho y por exceso de velocidad. Shepard fue puesto en libertad tras pagar una multa de 600 dólares y las costas del juicio y prometer que no volvería a reincidir.

SHIA LaBEOUF

LaBeouf fue detenido por conducir borracho después de chocar contra otro vehículo. A causa de este accidente se retrasó el rodaje de “Transformers 2” (2009).

STEVE McQUEEN

El inolvidable actor de “Los siete magníficos” (1960), “La gran evasión” (1963), “Bullitt” (1968), “La huida” (1972), “Papillon” (1973) o “El coloso en llamas” (1974)  fue detenido en 1972 por conducir ebrio. No se puede negar que a Steve se le ve la mar de “contento”…

TIM ALLEN

Antes de iniciar su carrera cinematográfica, Tim Allen fue arrestado en 1978 en el aeropuerto de Kalamazoo (Michigan) acusado de vender de drogas y en 1979 por posesión. Volvió a ser detenido en 1997 por conducir borracho y por exceso de velocidad.

VINCE VAUGHN

En 2001 Vaughn fue arrestado por participar en una pelea multitudinaria a la salida de un bar.

WESLEY SNIPES

En 2006 Wesley Snipes fue detenido en el aeropuesto de Orlando por evasión de impuestos. Parece ser que el actor le debía al fisco unos míseros 12 millones de dólares…

WINONA RYDER

La cleptómana actriz también ha caído en las redes de la policía por robar en unos grandes almacenes. En la foto podemos observar a Winona durante el juicio en la que fue procesada.

WOODY HARRELSON

En 1982 el actor fue arrestado por desorden público. Parece ser que a Harrelson le dio por pegarse unos bailoteos en medio de la calle entorpeciendo el tráfico. No sólo se resistió a la detención, sino que incluso se escapó del coche de policía que le trasladaba a la comisaría.

YASMINE BLEETH

Kind of. I am not half as much into sailing as it seems when you look at my blog, but with this story, it is a bit like reporting court: you kind of HAVE to report the whole story and once you started, you cannot back out anymore.

So I keep blogging about Jessica as the world is watching her next attempt to sail the seven seas.

The NZ HERALD had a story on their website today about Jessica Watson’s granddad, a Kiwi, who hopes that his granddaughter will give her critics (which kind of includes myself, I’m afraid) “the fingers”.

Gordon Chisholm (not the Scottish footballer who looks like Ryan O’Neal) is his name and a friend of mine actually met him a little while ago and sold waterproof paper to him, as a gift for Jessica.

I am kind of pessimistic about this whole kid-sails-around-the-world-thing. She is 16 years old and her first attempt failed, because she had a “cat-nap” while her boat collieded with a merchant ship. That makes me worry about that kid. And wonder if she is really responsible enough to make the right decisions on her journey. But that is only my personal opinion.

Mr Chisholm sees the whole matter much more positive: “Her decision-making abilities, as far as we’re concerned, were top-rate.”

Well… I am still sceptical (especially since I read in her yesterday’s blogpost, that she “grabbed” some more “cat naps” ), but I really wish her all the best and hope she has a safe journey.

Okay, actually I thought it was the grossest thing ever when my little brother used to pick his nose and try to wipe it on me . . . but, really, right about now, I’m thinking my childhood (even with the annoying little brother), pretty freakin’ okay . . . And, I’m thinking Father’s Day is kinda broad, so here’s a shout out just to the dad’s who don’t do drugs with and/or have sex with their kids.

Really though, this gets at the heart of why I’m not married yet . . . there are all these people who grew up with a Dad who took off when they were little or before they were born . . . and everyone acts like this absentee father phenomenon is a devastating problem, but I’m sure lots of these kids are much better off not having these types of guys around (not all kids, of course . . .  ‘cause really, some kid might have benefitted from a drug- induced incest fest) . . . I mean, the faux family photos might look good (in Ryan O’Neal’s case, really good), but reality is clearly not quite as pretty a picture . . . so that’s just it, I’m just not willing to settle for a relationship that merely seems delightful and amazing – I want it to genuinely be  as good as it looks in those hokey Kodak Christmas cards I’ll never send (where everyone saying “cheese” huddles together in coordinating red turtlenecks) . . . otherwise I’d without question rather save myself the time and trouble of manufacturing a marketing campaign for my less than stellar home life . . . and simply stay single.
