Thought I’d treat us to a Sexy Santa in honor of Christmas this week.  How’d you like this dude coming down the chimney?  

Actor, Ryan Phillippe was seen wearing a cast after he reportedly had an ‘accident’ – on his treadmill!  It is said he tried running barefoot on it and well, I bet now he’s paying for it!  Sorry Ryan but that was stupid.

God what a violent weekend it has been for me!

Criminals Longbaugh (Benicio Del Toro) and Parker (Ryan Phillippe) kidnap a pregnant surrogate mother (Juliette Lewis) for a $15 million ransom from the baby’s gangster father in Oscar-winning writer Christopher MacQuarrie’s (The Usual Suspects) directorial debut. But as the duo waits in Mexico with the woman in tow, they discover they may be in over their heads.

When I saw the trailer for this film I was not so impressed one bit. I was expecting a high action packed thriller, with high energy due to its song being “Break Stuff” by Limp Bizkit. But what I got from that trailer was totally different than what I ended up with.

There are a lot of good things that go with this film. First of all, the action is very top-notched. There are plenty of well-choreographed shooting scenes that turn out to be exciting and very smart to watch.

Secondly, the acting is actually quite good in the film. Phillippe and Del Toro have good chemistry as you would expect, and play as these villains in the beginning, but slowly by the end you start to root for them. The best performance comes from James Caan here who gives a solid supporting performance, and shows that he won’t be out acted by a bunch of youngsters.

Everything seems like it can work for this film, but the one problem that MacQuarrie can’t overcome is the really choppy editing. At some parts you have these little cheesy heart-to-hearts, then at one point you have this gun slinging action fight, then you have another tail of deception. I felt like there was so much crammed into this film that there wasn’t any time for it to all develop.

Another thing I didn’t like about the film was that all its lies, deceptions, twists, and turns really started to become an annoyance for me. I really wish they just focused on the story at hand, rather than trying to create all these other not-needed stories where everything doesn’t turn out to be what it seems.

Consensus: The Way Of The Gun has some high-quality action, and top-notch acting, but can’t overcome its sloppy and sluggish editing.

#25.  Crash [2004]: Paul Haggis’ brilliantly filmed drama about race relations in post-911 Los Angeles was as much a slap in the face, as it was a breath of fresh air.  With strong performances by a coterie of fresh and established faces, the film did a wonderful job of questioning notions of a post-racial society.

Shot from several different perspectives, the movie examines the lives of several main characters portrayed among others by Don Cheadle, Terrence Howard, Brendan Fraser, Sandra Bullock, Matt Dillon, Ryan Phillippe and rapper turned actor Christopher “Ludacris” Bridges.   The film chronicles each character as inevitably their paths cross, ultimately crashing into one another.  Complexity ensues as each interaction reveals a different racial bias.

To be sure, Haggis uses a sledgehammer to get his point across.  At times the story seems far-fetched.  Yet it is effective in getting across the point that all of us, regardless of ethnicity hold preconceived notions about others based upon their cultural backgrounds.  Critics complained that the movie was an unrealistic portrayal of race relations in this country.  Although this criticism has some merit, it misses the point.  Crash is a movie that forces us to re-think the cultural lenses through which we view our fellow citizens as well as the society at large.   In conveying the message in a compelling way it strikes just the right tone.

I won’t spend alot of time selling this film because the trailer looks very interesting. However, for those that need a little background, I will oblige you.

“Franklyn” marks the feature film directorial debut (I told you it was popular this year) of Gerald McMorrow and stars Ryan Phillippe, Eva Green and Sam Riley. The film takes place in present day London and a future city called Meanwhile City.

It’s the story of four lost souls, divided by two parallel worlds, on course for an explosive collision when a single bullet will decide all their fates.

This film seems to attempt to aim high, and as it is a small indie film, I have to give it credit for doing so. So far, the consensus on Rotten Tomatoes (61%, 28 reviews) is, “Gerald McMorrow’s bold debut is a complex and ambitious film that highlights the director’s potential, but its multi-layered story takes time to develop and might be frustrating for some.”

The film made a stop at the Fangoria Trinity of Terrors earlier this month after seeing release in late February in the UK. Set for DVD release on Nov. 17, look for this film to garner more reviews, including my own.

E’ atipico viaggio tra fede, destino e pazzia che, costruito su lenti ritmi di narrazione concede pochissimo spazio ai momenti d’azione. Un viaggio che, tempestato d’amore romantico, trova il suo maggiore punto di forza nelle curate costruzioni scenografiche, ulteriormente valorizzate dalla bella fotografia, dominata da toni estremamente cupi durante le sequenze notturne e dispensatrice di un’atmosfera piuttosto grigia in quelle diurne.

Un soggetto potenzialmente interessante, che però si lascia comprendere solo a 10 minuti dalla fine dopo un intero film completamente immerso una confusione e incomprensione totali. A metà, viene da domandarsi come si possano spendere soldi ed inviare nei cinema un prodotto così scandaloso. Solo nel finale, quando le nubi della confusione si diradano, si comprende il filo logico che unisce le quattro storie. Alla fine la storia, e con lei tutto il film, si salva.

Ingen superhöjdare till film men kanske värd den allmänbildning filmen faktiskt innehåller, då den är baserad på en sann historia. Bortsett från själva upplägget är handlingen och skådespelarna väldigt samspelta och där finns ett par minnesvärda repliker.

Efter att under två perioder ha stridit i Irak, kommer den dekorerade sergeanten Brandon King (Ryan Phillippe) hem till den lilla sömniga hemstaden i Texas. Plågad av minnena från striderna och kamraters bortgångar försöker han börja ett nytt liv där hemma. Hans vänner Steve (Channing Tatum) och Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) har också varit med i Irak och även de lider på olika sätt av sviterna efter kriget. Allt rasar samman då King blir beordrad att på nytt bege sig till Mellanöstern (Stop-Loss är en amerikansk militär term som innebär en icke frivillig förlängning av en soldats militärtjänstgöring). King vill på inga villkor tillbaka till den plats där han upplevt så mycket död och olycka. Det blir en kamp med pliktkänsla och övertygelse samtidigt som hans val kan komma att påverka resterande del av hans liv – oavsett vad han väljer.

Det är idag inte så ofta man ser amerikanska filmer ur krigsveteraners perspektiv och frågan är hur dessa sargade människor uppmärksammas på hemmaplan efter att ha offrat så mycket för sitt land… eller i alla fall för dess ledare. Filmen beskriver hur även den starkaste kommer hem och lider av svår posttraumatisk stress och hur de på några månader genomgår stora personlighetsförändringar. Regissören Kimberly Pierce som tidigare gjort den otroligt gripande Boys Don’t Cry, lyckas inte fullt lika bra här, men det är onekligen en oerhört stark och gripande film. Till och med den annars rätt mediokra Tatum presterar bra även om duktige Phillippe så klart är strået vassare. Den som stjäl alla scener han är med i är dock Gordon-Levitt vars sorgliga gestalt dröjer sig kvar långt efter filmen tagit slut.
