Yakuza 3 may have been announced for the West a few days ago but Sega seem to be a fan of the saying

Yakuza 3 may have been announced for the West a few days ago but Sega seem to be a fan of the saying “Out with the old, in with the new”. The fourth game in the Yakuza (Or Ryu Ga Gotoku 3 as it is known in Japan) series has been given a Japanese release date before the third game has even been released in the West.

Ryu Ga Gotoku 4 will be released in Japan on the 18th of March 2010. It is priced at 7,980 Yen which is roughly $90 (US).

You may think that Sega are bad for announced sequels before the previous games have been released but Level 5 are far worse. The entire Professor Layton series before any was released in Europe and the sequel to White Knight Chronicles is being worked on, even though the game hasn’t seen the light outside of Japan yet.

Finally!!! After months of waiting and thoughts of westerners never getting a localization of the PS3 hit Yakuza 3 “IS” coming to the US! Story broke from an interview done by 1Up.com with a Sega employee letting slip that the developer company has made plans to release the game to US and UK.

“Just a few days ago Sega rep Aaron Webber commentedthat the possibility of Yakuza 3 coming to the U.S. still exists and that it’s a subject discussed quite often at Sega. Today we can do one better: we’ve learned that the PS3 exclusive is indeed coming west. According to sources close to the project, Yakuza 3 is currently being localized for release in the U.S. and European markets.”

So even though I have the Japanese versions of the first and second game, my lady love bought and finished the third installment. According to her it’s really good! It may still be awhile before I get to play it (she in Japan now) but when I do you can bet the review will be posted before the western release. If you havent played this game and love fighting/brawler game you should check this franchise out. I named it one of my best PS2 games ever so you know it deserves a look see.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan – spin off ambientado no Japão feudal – também nunca verá a luz do dia neste lado do Atlantico.

Quem tiver acesso a PSN japonesa vai poder jogar a demo do jogo.

As mentioned earlier the Yakuza 3 (or Ryu ga Gotoku 3, if you will) demo hit the Japanese PlayStatio

As mentioned earlier the Yakuza 3 (or Ryu ga Gotoku 3, if you will) demo hit the Japanese PlayStation Store this evening. Although there’s an understandable lack of English, I was able to gleem a little bit of information about the graphics and battle system from my play through.

First of all, while I expect this means absolutely nothing to fans of the series, Yakuza 3 isn’t breaking any grounds with its graphics engine. While probably not the case, my first impression is that the environment and character models have little to no added geometry from the prior game in the series, which was a PS2 exclusive. The textures are definitely higher-resolution and the game looks nice enough, but it’s not quite what you would expect to see from such a high-profile game, certainly below the sophistication of GTA IV, a loosely similar game, at least in its environment’s scope and story’s reliance on cutscenes.

The demo is focused on presenting several fights, a couple of cut-scenes, and allows you to enter one of the social clubs to try your hand at impressing a lady. It seems that the demo is an excerpt from early in the game, but is not the very beginning of the game as one would experience in the retail copy. It’s hard to tell without having any understanding of the story that’s being told, but the beginning of the demo is abrupt, dumping you right into the same Osaka neighborhood featured in Yakuza 2.

The cut-scenes are all in-engine and use high-res character textures, but the geometry of the faces and hair is very reminiscent of the programming tricks used in many PS2 games. The cinematography continues the tradition of the well-done cut-scenes from the previous games, no complaints here.

The fighting engine is carried over essentially untouched from prior games in the series, though there appears to be at least two minor additions. First, the HEAT system now has two stages, blue and pink. I’m not quite sure what additional capabilities you have while in the second, pink stage, but I assume it involves more powerful attacks. Second, the boss fights use a new “Quick Time Event” system for finishing moves that adds an additional element of timing to the usual QTE format that was present in the previous games.

While there’s no current plans for a English release of Yakuza 3, it’s a safe bet that if we are ever so lucky, at the very least, we’ll be getting more of the same great gameplay, and hopefully a decent story to boot. If you’re interested in checking Yakuza 3 out for yourself and don’t have a Japanese PlayStation Network account, you can check out this video for English instructions on setting one up for yourself.

Actually, if you’ve watched any Japanese films of TV shows made in the last 20 years or so, I guarantee someone from whatever you’ve watched will have been in this film, not least of all the mightly Aikawa Sho and Endo Kenichi.

The film also features one of the strangest possible Tokyo Drifter homages ever, and speaking of director Suzuki Seijun, should I ever find the words for it, remind me to talk to you about the Odagiri Jo/Zhang Ziyi ‘musical’ Operetta Tanuki Goten.

Kiryuu Kazuma reprises his role by retro-rocketing back to Edo era Japan where he works as a hired gun who tackles assignments for any client willing to pay.

Sega fleshes out the world of old Kyoto with locales and structures to exacting detail for an engaging gaming experience. Players may visit soba shops in Gion District, trek to Kiyomizu Temple in eastern Kyoto, or visit the magnificent expanse that is Nijô Castle. Similar to previous games in the series, Kiryuu gets to do a lot of fighting in 3D bouts tinged with heat.

He’s just muscle. A battle-hardened Yakuza street enforcer who’s tactics are brutal. NCS wouldn’t go so far as to ascribe the title of “anti-hero” to Kiryu since he has redeeming qualities and a heart of gold when the occasion calls. Maybe we’ll coin the term “semi-hero.”

Kiryu’s broad shoulders have carried three commercially successful games for the House of Sega but toys have been lacking. That changes this summer when Sega Toys releases the Ryu Ga Gotoku 2 Kiryu Kazuma Lighting Figure which features a shirtless gangster who stands on a lit pedestal. The lighting is for dramatic effect. Three weapons are included with the figure for a menacing effect. Preorders ship in late July 2008.
