I said in my original post about this set that I was lucky enough to get the full set of figures except for the secret figure. Well, I was wrong. I was actually lucky enough to get the full set of figures. The secret figure is, as strongly suggested on the packaging, an angel version of L. The reason I didn’t notice the secret figure to begin with is that it is extremely similar to the non-secret L that comes with a red chair. In my haste, I think I just saw the chair and assumed it was a double, but on closer inspection there are a few key differences: the left arm is not raised, the facial expression is different, and he comes with a halo and a pair of angel wings.

The halo is pretty fragile – the stand that connects the halo with L’s head was already broken right out of the box – but a little bit of glue (or even blu-tac in a pinch) will fix that, and considering that’s the only issue this otherwise excellently made set, it’s hard to complain. This really is a fantastic set of figures; I’m very pleased to have the full set and look forward to doubling the size of the collection with Case File #02 early next year! Thank goodness they’re puchi, not full-size Nendoroids. This concludes the photos of the puchi Death Note characters… for now.

After some experimenting with the Lumix GF1 and different photoshoot set-ups, I’m ready to give you a better look at Good Smile Company’s Nendoroid Puchi Death Note Case File #01. I’m really pleased with the detail that the GF1 was able to capture without a macro lens (I’m using the 14-45mm kit lens) as well as how the lighting turned out. There’s nothing overly complex about the set-up, so I’ll just let you see for yourself instead of going into any further detail. I hope you like these first photos; stay tuned for parts two and three over the next week or so to see the whole set!

The SPK and the task force face down, with Near initially wearing a mask of L’s face. Mikami a

The SPK and the task force face down, with Near initially wearing a mask of L’s face. Mikami arrives, and writes the cast’s names in his notebook; Near and Light have both planned for this, and have created various elaborate forgeries and plots to ensure his success or failure. Both silently celebrate their victories, but only Light proclaims, at thirty-six seconds, “Near, it’s my win.”

But it’s not, of course; Light’s wrong, and nothing can save him. He dies in agony.

1. Near’s L mask is a nightmare, and in the bargain, it doesn’t look much like L (though it’s a plausible caricature of Near). I’m sure this was intentional, and it’s a good visual scare in a Jokeresque way.

Enjoying Death Note’s last scenes is all about pretending they were set up properly. For the first time in many episodes, there’s some sort of heft to what’s happening, but it’s hard when it’s not connected to anything in the past. Again, if we’d learned even the first thing about how Near feels about L, then the mask would’ve been a fantastic dramatic weapon. It could have meant fifty things, at least one of them intentional, and the rest helpfully written by the viewer.

2. The Yellow Box scene uses arty angles in much the same way that Episode 25 did, and picks up many of the same images – the dripping water, industrial architecture, even the fisheye lens. But it doesn’t work as well here, because most of it’s deployed at random (the fisheye, which originally signified L’s first-person viewpoint, is just dropped to the floor between Light and Near ).

Likewise, there’s a shitload of obvious imagery (that big hook!) to replace the earlier, defter stuff — though by the end, we’ve seen that big hook so many times that it’s passed through silliness, somehow. The weird, wet sound design also helps to compensate.

3. I wish that they’d retired “Domine Kira” after L died to it. It’s a great piece of background music, claustrophobic and panic-inducing and extremely conclusive, and at L’s death it was wielded rather than played — not only because of the mood it created, but because it had already been used at several climactic scenes. By then, you’d memorized the phases of its choral frenzy; you knew when it ended, so you knew precisely how long L had to live. It was an inexorable countdown.

Hauling it out for second-arc shocks, especially Mikami’s final “sakujo,” is too much. The thing is already done and spent (in a slightly different sense from Mikami).

4. I don’t know what they were trying to do with Light’s prolonged and stylized breakdown, but I don’t think it succeeds. It certainly humiliates him, but it also dehumanizes him — and at the precise moment when we should have begun to pity him in his hideous failure. You can’t even empathize with the other characters. They’re responding to something completely unrecognizable, and so their emotion is unrecognizable as well.

5. Given the underdevelopment of Mello and Near, it’s hard to get the “together, we can even surpass L” business. Which is a shame, as it’s a silly but viable explanation for their defeat of Light.

We can guess Mello’s arc. We’re not idiots. But it would be nice to have some confirmation from the control booth.

6. Miyano Mamoru does Light’s hysterics beautifully. I stopped really paying attention to the Death Note voice acting after the passing of The Yamaguchi, but it takes a lot not to overplay this kind of over-the-top vocal blood; instead, Miyano’s voice is one of the few things that lends Light any humanity at all.

7. Matsuda’s redemptive moment isn’t really shooting Light five times. That’s the kind of shit Matsuda always gets up to. The impressive part is that, even amidst all of this excitement, he’s thinking — he shoots Light specifically because he’s realized who killed Soichiro.

8. And after being the only character brave enough to challenge either L or Light, much less both, Aizawa’s closing moment is refusing to follow Near’s first order as the new “L.” It wasn’t obvious to me the first time, but Aizawa is secretly the protagonist; he would’ve been the protagonist in the hands of any other writer.

9. Light’s death is awful. And after all that, it’s very important that it be awful, and that we feel for him in his final moments of horror. This isn’t a tragedy about evil consuming itself; it’s a much more everyday tragedy — human stupidity in wasting life — so the lives Light’s wasted, including his own, must be the focus of the ending.

10. Arguably, the manga did this better; his last moments are so resoundingly pathetic, and his desperation not to die is played out over what seems like precisely forty seconds of panels. But I respect and admire the anime ending, too, which plays it much more quietly. In particular, Light’s vision of his younger self is startling — especially the moment when his eye flicks to see the boy, and you realize that his appearance in flashback isn’t a dramatic device. Light is really seeing him.

11. I also love the setting of Light’s end — an industrial wasteland surmounted by a beautiful sunset.

12. Ryuk’s line (“It was good while it lasted; we killed some boredom, didn’t we?”) seems to address us, though he’s really addressing Light; it’s a well-aimed barb, like an epilogue from an evil Puck.

13. Light’s final vision of L on the stairs, and the juxtaposition with Misa’s suicide, and the grandeur of the sunset and the moon, and the music, are really very, very good — for the first time in several hours of benighted crap, it’s viewer-implicatingly good, the kind of good that makes you regret wasting six hours of precious life on that benighted crap, and hate yourself a little for enjoying Light’s final curb-stomping.

The return of L is especially painful. This should have been a great detective series; L, Light and Misa should have been some of the greatest and most engaging heroes in anime history. But their time was wasted, and they’re dead now. The loss of their youthful lives, and the absolute permanence of that loss, is the very point of the series. No force on Earth can bring back the pampered, aloof, but essentially harmless young Light. Misa’s current film will be her last. Nothing more can shock Yagami; Mello will never fall in love; Matt will never play Scribblenauts on the DS; Naomi will never get her life sorted out; the great L will never catch another criminal, nor enjoy another sundae. Nor will we ever know the precise nature of L’s life. If the series had gone as it should have, we would have learned it by degrees, but history was averted.

Domine Kira!

After months of anticipation, Good Smile Company’s first set of Death Note Nendoroid Puchis is

After months of anticipation, Good Smile Company’s first set of Death Note Nendoroid Puchis is here. This actually marks a couple of firsts for me: the first Nendoroids I’ve owned, and the first figures by Good Smile I’ve owned. Nendoroids have proven to be very popular and Good Smile has made quite a reputation for themselves in terms of quality, and with this set it’s not hard to understand either of those things.

This set has been released as blind-box trading figures, which means that you don’t know which character you’re getting when you buy an individual box. While this can be frustrating, blind-box figures are very common in Japan. There are eleven figures in this set, and in my box of twelve I managed to get all ten of the “standard” figures (the eleventh is a “secret” figure, although the silhouette on the box kind of gives it away). I don’t know if that’s standard or not – online stores all indicate that it’s entirely possible to not get the full set - but I’m very happy either way.

Of course, ten out of twelve means I have two doubles. And, of course, those doubles came very early in the opening process, which completely killed my optimism but made it all the sweeter as each box opened after that held a new figure. I suppose I’ll use eBay to find those doubles a nice new home. The spares are actually two of my favourites in the set – L with his chair and Ryuk with some apples – and I’m sure someone will want them. If you’re interested, let me know and we can sort something out.

It’s been a long time coming and I couldn’t be happier with the set. The poses and facial expressions are great, and the quality is exceptional. Despite the relatively diminutive stature of the puchis (65mm) the detail is astounding, from the text on the cover of the Death Notes to accessories like Misa’s necklace, the long-chained handcuffs and Watari’s glasses. A lot of creativity and care has gone into this set and it would make a great addition to any Death Note or Nendoroid fan’s collection. Case File #02 featuring characters from the latter part of the story was recently announced, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it in January.

You can expect to see some more photos soon (I have a Lumix GF1 on the way that will need plenty of playing with) but here’s a quick look at the very cute group.

Yagami Light, a Japanese high-school senior, finds a notebook whose endpaper attributes it the power

Yagami Light, a Japanese high-school senior, finds a notebook whose endpaper attributes it the power to kill anyone whose name is written in it, provided the writer pictures the person’s face as the name is set down. At first, Light assumes the notebook is a joke; soon, however, he tests it out and finds that it is real. He then proceeds to dedicate himself to killing criminals, with the eventual intent of becoming “the god of a new world” containing only kind and decent people. He is only momentarily disturbed when he meets the demon, Ryuk, who has deliberately dropped the notebook in hopes of a little “fun”; Ryuk, surprised and intrigued by Light’s sociopathy, sits back to watch the carnage.

1. Episode 1 of Death Note isn’t much more than a perfect, suspenseful setup — but, for whatever reason, I’ve rarely seen a long-running anime that didn’t stumble on the mount a little, so it deserves something for that alone. I’m not really sure why such an engrossing beginning is so rare, except perhaps in cases when the anime is adapting a long-running and beloved manga and thus feels more obligation to provide the fans with healthy dollops of their favorite characters than to provide newcomers with a jolt of whatever energy had originally attracted the fans. Perhaps, in this particular case, it helped that there was a negative example: an earlier film adaptation which makes precisely these mistakes.

2. Unnoticed initially, but fantastic: the first shot of the entire series is an inexorable hurtle through a long tunnel and into a disturbing, toothy gate. We’re not going to hell, of course; we’re going to the Shinigami World, but it certainly feels like a first-person descent into hell, just like episodes 20-37.

3. Death Note is fond of setting up dualities and rivalries, the most obvious of which is Light and L (and the first opening sequence makes that clear enough). It’s worth noting, though, that the introductions of Light and Ryuk form the original and, really, the most significant of the series’ pairings — certainly the only real relationship Light ever forms. Both characters are established, through the content of their first scenes, as kingly, observant, more intelligent and motivated than their fellows, judgmental; essentially scornful, pre-bored by everything that they see. Their link is their lack of empathy, about which much more later.

4. The Death Note’s fall, and Ryuk’s subsequent leap, parallel the descent of Lucifer in much the same way that Death Note does all of its Christian symbolism: surprisingly lightly and subtly, with a strong touch of parody. You can’t tell me that it’s not there; it would be impossible for me to believe it wasn’t somehow intentional, even if it’s not the product of minds raised in a Judeo-Christian faith.

5. Light walks home, hearing news of grisly events on the radio. It’s interesting, but the Death Note world is always like that — life is unremittingly violent, and Light’s eventual excesses are set up to appear more reasonable than they would be in a realistic world, which still never makes them reasonable.

6. Amused to see that Light’s evil laugh is already nascent in the very first episode. There’s no real effort to make this character sympathetic, no effort to make him more than a logic puzzle or a sociopathic machine — which is one of those bizarre and yet completely functional decisions at the heart of the series. Again, more about this later, when we get to the glorious mass of synapse that is L.

7. All of the lectures Light attends are symbolically relevant, which is something you can only pull off in a cartoon world. A cartoon is a bit like a novel, in that everything is assumed to be intentional; a highly unified worldview and world and set of images goes less amiss than it would, for example, in a traditional television series or even a film — the less physical resemblance it bears to recognizable reality, the more easily it can be made to resemble the inside of a brain.

Merita!

Okay, so tonight, for the first time in months, I picked up watching Death Note again. I began with

Okay, so tonight, for the first time in months, I picked up watching Death Note again. I began with the second episode and have reached the 6th already, but…. I just can’t watch anymore. It disgusts me to no end that the ‘hero’ of this story is a self-righteous, arrogant teenage boy who thinks of himself as god because he uses a shinigami’s Death Note notebook to kill criminals by the dozens. Sure, to some extent, that’s heroic… But not the god part. He’s talking about wanting full-on worship from the world, here. If that were the case in real life, I’d be like hell the f*** no. I’m not bowing down to some egotistical teenaged boy who may be a genius (but a sick, twisted one at that) just because he’s ridding the world of criminals.

The other thing, the main thing that ticks me off is the fact that he just loses touch with justice and starts killing innocent people just because they’re onto him. It took him no time at all to kill the decoy L that the real L planted for the TV broadcast. He’s either some twisted genius that uses his advanced logic and Death Note book to play around with people, or he’s on drugs, going through some massive puberty, and just happens to have a magical Death Note book to carry out his wishes. I wish it was the latter, so I could just laugh his petty actions off. XDD But sadly, this isn’t the case. (that was a long shot anyhow)

L is really what I’m watching Death Note for, at this point. His intelligence and logical thinking is really entertaining to see being played out in the investigation into ‘Kira’, and I love his little mannerisms and quirks. The fact that he isn’t blinded by what true justice is, and that criminals should all die horrid, brutal, gruesome deaths because they’ve committed rotten crimes is still unjust to begin with…. that’s a very good perspective on life. And if Light wants to be a freaking god with his Death Note, he should keep in mind that gods are supposedly forgiving gods who love people nonetheless. (says the atheist who only knows religion through a few years of private school…. XD) L exhibits a better understanding of life and forgiveness and can just differentiate from what’s right and wrong, on an unbiased level. Light should learn from him, not seethe from fury and wish he was freaking dead every waking minute of his life.

So, I want to ask anyone reading this – who do you think is the better of the two? Who did you support while watching and/or reading Death Note? Post your answers below. No matter the stance I have, I’m open to opposition to L. It’s your opinion, anyhow. =]

I’m sure you’ve heard of Death Note. The anime world is filled with squealing fangirls and die-hard L lovers, and it’s not uncommon to find DeviantArt pictures slashing every character imagineable.

But what is Death Note?

Death Note is about a genius boy’s struggle accepting society the way it is. It is a must-see for anyone who has ever questioned the morals of today’s society. If you have ever wished for a better world, or found yourself distraught over the pain and suffering in the world, Death Note is about a young boy taking action to try and change the world to something better.

When a bored Shinigami (or death god) drops his Death Note into the human realm, Light finds it and, skeptical, is led to try it out. The rules state that any human whose name is written in the notebook will die–and, as he comes to find out, it is true.

Light spends every minute of his time writing the names of criminals in the Death Note, fighting to rid the world of evil. Noticing that the sudden storm of deaths is not just coincidence, the world’s greatest detective, L, decides to take on the case.

Death Note is a psychological thriller focusing on the theme of human suffering and the fight to end it. Death Note provides a different experience to each individual, depending on whether one sides with Light or L. Either way, it is a must-see for any anime fan, or even those who are only interested in the psychology of it. Death Note is, unquestionably, a masterpiece.

Death Note, Volume 1, story by Tsugumi Ohba, art by Takeshi Obata, San Francisco: Viz Media, 2005, 1

Death Note, Volume 1, story by Tsugumi Ohba, art by Takeshi Obata, San Francisco: Viz Media, 2005, 195pgs. 3Q, 5P

Light Yagami, age 17, is a brilliant student, bored with being so smart. Light finds Death Note, a black notebook that kills someone within minutes of his/her name being inscribed in it. The Death Note was purposely dropped by Ryuk, a Shinigami or death god, who is equally bored and opts to amuse himself by tossing the Death Note into the world of humans. The Death Note links Light and Ryuk, enabling Light to see and communicate with Ryuk, yet he remains invisible to all others. The Death Note provides Light with purpose, when he decides that he can rid the world of crime through writing the names of criminals in the Death Note. All he needs is a name, a picture, a pen, and the Death Note, and he is a murderer creating a new world order. The price for using the Death Note is that once Light dies, he will go to neither heaven nor hell.

As Light progresses with his mission, the killings are being investigated by a task force led by Light’s father, the Detective Superintendent of the NPA, heading the investigation into the mass killings. This provides Light with inside information on the progress of the police. The mass murder investigation is also assisted by L, a crime fighting celebrity whose identity is shrouded in mystery. L is Light’s counterpoint/adversary, each representing a different approach to justice and crime fighting. Light and L intellectually and symbolically duke it out, with mass coverage by the media. Interestingly enough, when the killings begin, Light is dubbed ‘Kira’ on the internet, with an identity and mission sculpted by the public in cyberspace. Eventually, the media latches on, reporting on the killings and investigation as a battle between Kira and L.

As with much manga, Light’s character can lean towards shallow. This is tempered by moments of introspection, questioning the morality of using the Death Note. At times Light borders on megalomania. For instance, why should we trust him with choosing what is right? To make the world a better place? L provides multiple structural counterpoints to Light: intellectually, egotistically, and morally. A pervasive issue in Death Note is the question of should Light be caught? Who do you support- L or Kira? Additionally, who is L? Why does he hold so much sway? These questions are also asked by the general public and police in the text, almost creating a kind of community with the reader.

The artwork does a wonderful job of furthering the story, and fleshing out some of the characters. L is often with his back to the reader, in an uncluttered frame, sometimes accompanied by a laptop. Light’s father appropriately looks like a harried cop. Despite superficial moments, Light’s face and posture reflect his moods, adding some dimensionality. Ryuk, while terrifying with his huge eyes, and killer clown mouth, can be a disappointment at times, due to multiple frames scattered throughout where he stares blankly. Yet there are scenes when he and Light are walking together on the street, Ryuk’s huge, hulking frame and punk rock accoutrements, dwarf Light, and reassert Ryuk as a god. I think that Death Note will appeal to a wide readership, from 12-20, particularly since there is an anime series, and live action films. The cover art will make most teens want to dive right in.
