Morning kids,

Not too sure what I want to post about today, but really struggled to get to sleep last night and thought a few times about getting up and typing something to you guys to see if that would make me feel better and allow me to finally get some sleep. However, I didn’t get up – your mom’s got a ridiculously hectic time at work this week and was up and out the house before 5am yesterday morning and was on the go all day…so she’s absolutely shattered and I knew that getting up and sitting in the office would disturb her much needed rest…so I just lay there thinking for hours and hours. Yup, another SNAIF (Sleepless Night Attributed to Infertility for those who haven’t memorised my super-duper HopelesslyTTC IF acronyms list).

Last night, while I was laying there in the dark, I thought of loads of things I wanted to tell you about, but now I sit here this morning, tired and bleary eyed, and it’s like I’ve become mentally constipated…do you get laxatives for the mind?? You must do, I’m convinced that an awful lot of people are taking them!

I’m in a bit of a funny place again…we’ve got our first appointment with the new FS (albeit at the same clinic) next week Tuesday and it sort of feels like another D-day is approaching…a dreaded DECISION is racing rapidly towards us…ready to knock us off this reed thin emotional tight-rope that we seems to walk during this TTC journey…just when you think you’ve got your balance right and you’re both coping splendidly…something comes along and induces a serious wobble.

I’ve been on these Pregnyl injections for just over 12 weeks now (three times a week) in the hopes that injecting LH into my system will wake my lazy testicles up enough for them to start producing Testosterone. That in itself isn’t the main target…I have after all been injecting myself with T on and off for over a decade (well actually your mom’s been sticking it to me – there’s no way I can reach around and inject myself in my own arse!!). No, the whole point of these injections is to try and give us some idea of whether my testes are developed enough that they would be likely to respond to FSH and produce sperm…because my bloody useless pituitary gland (now named Paris Pituitary as it’s never done an honest days work in its life) hasn’t been producing these hormones…so my testes have been sort of just hanging out, not doing much, just sort of there for decoration really…as much use as a waterproof teabag!

I’ve been for a couple of blood tests over the last few months to see whether there’s been any response, whether my body has started producing its own T – but the results haven’t looked good so far. One more blood test on Friday and I’m pretty sure that if the results are not an overwhelming ‘Yes’, that it’s back to searching for Zorro time…donor sperm her we come…if you’ll excuse the weak pun.

I’ve decided that I also want to do another SA for this appointment (yes, I know, cos life isn’t bad enough I’ll subject myself to that ordeal)…not because I have any real hope that my testes have suddenly woken up and decided to play ball (jeez – bad puns seem to be the flavour of this post…sorry), but because I don’t want to look back in a years time and wonder if we moved on to DS too quickly. I want a resounding NO, so that all the doubts and possible “what if’s” that will creep up on me in the wee hours of the night sometime in the future, are smothered before they can even begin. I need the FS to tell me that my nuts are as useful as ABS on a skateboard, a parachute in a submarine, honesty & sincerity to a politician…whatever. Because, without this absolute No, it’s going to be even harder to give up on this dream of having my own biological kids…something I didn’t know was such an important thing to me until very recently.

Mentally and intellectually, I’ve come to terms with this decision – I know that I will love you kids unconditionally whether you have my poxy genes or Zorro’s hopefully fantastic genetic material. I know that when I hold you in my arms, it won’t matter that much what we’ve had to go through to get you guys – it would have all been worth it…but I also know that given a choice, I would want you to be mine, genetically speaking too. And so, as much as I’ve come to terms with it intellectually, I know that emotionally it’s not that easy. 99.99% of the time, it won’t matter, but there will always be those little moments, those half-seconds, where it’ll still hurt, where a chance remark from some ignorant stranger will have me raging internally at fate/god/karma whatever, that I couldn’t have kids of my own.

I feel like it shouldn’t be such a big deal. I’m in the unusual situation where it looks like I’ll be the house-husband, with your mom returning to her career after her maternity leave. So I will be there 24/7, I’ll get to bond with you guys in a way that the vast majority of fathers don’t. I’ll get to spend that precious time with you, being instrumental in the development of your minds, your personalities, your interests, your hobbies – I will be able to have a greater impact on your ‘non-genetic’ characteristics than most genetic fathers do with their kids…and that should make a big difference emotionally to me. It’s something I’m really looking forward to. I’m longing for the days when I can take you to the beach (or anywhere else you guys want to go) when everyone else’s father is slogging their guts out at work, only seeing their kids for a short while in the morning and an hour or two at night before bedtime and on weekends.

I want to spend summer days throwing you in the pool (after I’ve taught you how to swim I suppose), winters making cards and drawing pictures for your mom, we’ll paint and read, we’ll watch cartoons and Discovery channel, we’ll kick a ball on the field down the road and ride bicycles and plant vegetables (although your mom will want to be the one to do that with you)…and in all of this, the fact that you aren’t my kids genetically, will not make any difference…and that’s what I need to focus on, because when I lose sight of that, and think about not being capable of producing even just one sperm cell for a successful IVF/ICSI, I want to crawl up into a ball and cry.

Maybe I’m just tired…but I miss you guys…wish you were here already…

Des de l’entorn de l’AV de Bellvitge es van enviar 20 consultes sobre diferents aspectes del barri al programa de TVL’H “L’Alcaldessa Respon” del dia 30.09.2009, aquella nit únicament es va respondre una d’elles al programa, però una vegada finalitzat es va rebre un correu electrònic de l’Antoni Rivera León, coordinador del gabinet de l’alcaldia dient que en uns dies es respondrien totes les preguntes enviades.  Ahir, juntament amb una disculpa pel retard, es van rebre aquestes respostes, que compartim amb tots vosaltres:

Localització de les preguntes. 10,11,14 i 16 o es troben pendents de localització o són preguntes generals

1. M’agradaria saber quan tindrem un accés al Prat de Llobregat sense risc pels vianants i bicicletes. El Bicing arribarà a l’Hospitalet el març que ve, podrem anar al Prat per l’autovia de Castelldefels o serà necessari anar fins a la passarel·la de Cornellà? Es trist que ens diguem “de Llobregat” i després de tants anys demanant aquest accés encara estiguem igual o pitjor.

Des de l’àrea de Mobilitat de l’Ajuntament ens informen que és un tema que està en vies de solució mitjançant les actuacions que realitza el Consell Comarcal a la llera del riu, en el pròxim soterrament de les vies del tren i en la segona fase de la reforma de la Granvia.

2. M’agradaria saber quan es realitzarà el parc de 12 Ha (amb un llac de 800 m2) previst al costat de l’Hospital Oncològic anunciat al 1996 (Veure publicació L’Hospitalet del 25.03.1996).

Des de l’Agència de Desenvolupament Urbà (ADU) ens informen que l’esmentat parc està inclòs a la Unitat d’Actuació 3 del “Pla Especial del sector delimitat per la Granvia i accessos al Cinturó del Litoral”, aprovat per la Comissió d?urbanisme el 17-6-1992.

3. M’agradaria saber com ha acabat el tema de l’abocador incontrolat de residus que havia al costat del tanatori i si ha afectat el terra o el aqüífer?

Segons ens informen la tipologia de material que s’està retirant del solar ubicat davant el tanatori, és residu inert (terres, runes), residu no especial (pneumàtics i plàstics) i pots buits amb restes de líquids que s’estan caracteritzant però que no sembla que hagin afectat els sòls. Tot i això, s’està a l’espera de la neteja total per confirmar aquest aspecte.

4. M’agradaria saber que es pretén fer als terrenys entre el hospital Oncològic, la Ronda Litoral i la Gran Via (Cal Jaume de la Vidala).

Des de l’Agència de Desenvolupament Urbà (ADU) ens informen que aquest àmbit està inclòs en el “Pla Especial del sector delimitat per la Granvia i accessos al Cinturó del litoral” abans esmentat, que va definir tres unitats d’actuació per al seu desenvolupament, posteriorment modificades en el projecte de Modificació de les Unitats d’Actuació, aprovat pel Ple municipal el 4-11-1994.

En quant a la Unitat d’Actuació núm. 3 ja s’ha contestat a l’anterior apartat.

En quant a la Unitat d’Actuació núm. 1 i núm. 2, a continuació es relacionen el seu estat d’execució i les previsions actuals:  Unitat d’actuació núm. 1 (Tanatori i les zones verdes del camí de Pau Redó): S’ha executat en la seva totalitat d’acord amb el Pla especial esmentat, amb totes les seves despeses, expropiació dels terrenys, urbanització i construcció del Tanatori a càrrec de Funerària de l’Hospitalet, SA,

De la mateixa manera que la unitat d’actuació núm. 3 aquesta zona està inclosa en els “Estudis previs per a la reordenació de l’àmbit de la Granvia-Llobregat. Reforma del segon tram de l’Av. de la Granvia de L’Hospitalet i transformació dels territoris adjacents de la Marina”, redactats per el Consorci per a la reforma de la Granvia de L’Hospitalet, que foren aprovats per la Junta de Govern Local en sessió celebrada el dia 4 de desembre de 2007.

Unitat d’actuació núm. 2 (Hospital Duran i Reynals): S’ha executat l’ampliació del Tennis Granvia, amb la cessió gratuïta dels terrenys per a les pistes esportives del costat nord. La nova vialitat prevista està expropiada per l’ACA amb motiu del col·lector que passa pel seu subsòl. No s’ha fet l’ampliació prevista de l’Hospital Duran i Reynals. El sistema previst fou el de compensació i correspon a l’Hospital la seva iniciativa.

En aquest sentit, les actuacions previstes en un futur segueixen essent l’ampliació de l’equipament amb nous requeriments actualitzats que són objecte d’estudi (BIOPOL’H) . Així, la Junta de Govern Local, en data 14 d’abril de 2009, i el Ple Municipal en data 28 de juliol de 2009 varen aprovar inicialment i provisionalment el “Pla Especial del Parc Científic i Tecnològic Biomèdic de Salut- BIOPOL’H. Ampliació de l’equipament sanitari-assistencial de l’Hospital Duran i Reynals (districte econòmic Granvia-L’Hospitalet) Avinguda de la Granvia, núms 199-203”, que resta pendent d’aprovació definitiva.

5. M’agradaria conèixer quins terrenys estan afectats pel Biopol.

Des de l’Agència de Desenvolupament Urbà (ADU), ens informen que són part dels terrenys de la Unitat d’Actuació núm. 2 de l’apartat anterior, inclosos a l’àmbit del “Pla Especial del Parc Científic i Tecnològic Biomèdic de Salut- BIOPOL’H. Ampliació de l’equipament sanitari-assistencial de l’Hospitalet Duran i Reynals (districte econòmic Granvia-L’Hospitalet) Avinguda de la Granvia, núms 199-203”.

6. M’agradaria saber com ha quedat el tema de la sentència del Tribunal Superior de Justícia de Catalunya de l’any 2004 que diu que les instal•lacions municipals de la deixalleria, i el parc de sanejament són d’ús industrial i no d’equipament tal com diu la seva qualificació urbanística i per tant haurien de tindre una altra ubicació.

Des de l’Agència de Desenvolupament Urbà (ADU), ens comuniquen que: Existeix una sentència del TSJC de 13 d’abril de 2004 que anul·la part del “Pla Especial de concreció d’usos dels tipus d’equipament i ordenació al c. Arquímides” que ordena els terrenys de la deixalleria i parc de sanejament. L’article 103 de la Llei 29/1998, de 13 de juliol, atribueix la potestat d’executar les sentències correspon als Jutjats i Tribunals de l’ordre jurisdiccional contenciòs-administratiu i d’altra banda l’article 104 de la mateix Llei determina que l’òrgan que hagués realitzat l’activitat objecte de recurs ha de procedir al compliment de la sentència. L’objecte del recurs era l’acord de la comissió d’Urbanisme de Barcelona de 17 de desembre de 1997 que va aprovar definitivament l’esmentat Pla Especial i per tant correspon a aquest òrgan administratiu de la Generalitat de Catalunya procedir a acordar allò que exigeixi el compliment de les declaracions contingudes en la sentència”.

7. M’agradaria saber si es canviarà d’ubicació el actual dipòsit municipal de vehicles que es troba al costat del riu Llobregat. L’últim any s’han incendiat varies vegades i es troba molt a prop de conductes de gas i petroli.

Segons el que ens informa l’àrea de Governació de l’Ajuntament, està en fase de construcció una nova dependència, en quant les obres estiguin finalitzades, el dipòsit municipal de vehicles actual quedarà sense activitat.

8. M’agradaria saber quan es restaurarà la masia La Torre Gran, actualment es troba en molt mal estat, encara que forma part del patrimoni arquitectònic de la ciutat.

L’Ajuntament de l’Hospitalet ha engegat en els darrers anys diverses iniciatives incloses en un projecte global de recuperació del patrimoni històric immoble de la ciutat.  El conjunt d’actuacions realitzades, en execució, o en fase de projecte, tenen com a objectiu rehabilitar edificis històrics emblemàtics dins l’actual trama urbana de la ciutat i adaptar-los per a l’ús de la ciutadania, en el marc del Pla Especial de Protecció del Patrimoni Arquitectònic (PEPPA), tots ells de propietat municipal.

En el cas de la Torre Gran, ubicada a la carretera de la Vora del riu sense número, es tracta d’una edificació de propietat privada, inclosa al PEPPA vigent (fitxa 99), i que té la qualificació de Bé Cultural d’Interès Local (BCIL) amb el número de catàleg 1721 de l’Inventari del Patrimoni Cultural Immoble de Catalunya.  El nivell de protecció específic establert al PEPPA és el C, que protegeix els edificis el valor dels quals resideix principalment en la seva estructuració tipològica, exteriorment reflectida en la façana i interiorment en la disposició de la seva estructura general així com en determinats espais, com vestíbuls i caixes d’escala. Aquestes parts o elements estaran específicament protegits, essent susceptible la resta de l’edifici d’actuacions de rehabilitació que mantinguin o revaloritzin aquelles. Qualsevol projecte d’obres que afecti l’edificació haurà de complir la normativa vigent i específicament els criteris d’intervenció establerts a la fitxa del PEPPA.

9. M’agradaria saber quins plans hi ha per la zona de la Torre Gran (des del riu fins a la ronda litoral).

Des de l’Agència de Desenvolupament Urbà (ADU) ens informen que actualment s’està executant el Projecte de Bassa de Laminació per part de l’Agència Catalana d’Aigua. De la mateixa manera que els terrenys anteriors aquesta zona també està inclosa a l’àmbit dels “Estudis previs per a la reordenació de l’àmbit de la Granvia-Llobregat. Reforma del segon tram de l’Av. de la Granvia de l’Hospitalet i transformació dels territoris adjacents de la Marina”.

10. M’agradaria saber si es realitzaran horts urbans a l’Hospitalet. Tots els municipis que ens envolten ja disposen. Actualment existeixen diversos nuclis d’horts urbans al•legals que creiem que seran destruïts per diverses

Segons ens informen des de Medi Ambient, hi ha previsió de posar horts urbans per a la gent gran.

11. El districte VI és un dels més contaminats de l’Hospitalet de Llobregat. M’agradaria saber si és possible instal•lar una estació fixa de mesura de contaminants per tal de preveure l’afecció d’aquests sobre els veïns.

Segons informació facilitada per l’àrea municipal de Medi Ambient, a la ciutat de L’Hospitalet, existeix una estació de mesurament de contaminació (Parc dels Ocellets).

12. El Pla d’Emergència Exterior del Sector Químic de Catalunya obliga, des del febrer de 2007, a l’Hospitalet de Llobregat a elaborar un Pla d’acció municipal, ja que al nostre municipi existeixen elements vulnerables molt significatius a prop d’empreses classificades com d’alt risc per accidents químics. Quan es farà aquest pla d’acció?

Ens comuniquen des de l’àrea municipal de Governació, que el PlaseQCat (Pla d’emergència Químic de Catalunya) està en fase de revisió, pendent d’homologació per part de la comissió de Protecció Civil de Catalunya.

13. La mateixa pregunta anterior pel TRANSCAT (Pla especial d’emergències per accidents en el transport de mercaderies perilloses per carretera i ferrocarril a Catalunya).

Des de l’àrea municipal de Governació, ens informen que el TRANSCAT (Pa Especial d’emergències per accidents en el transport de mercaderies perilloses per carreteres i ferrocarril a Catalunya) actualment, està elaborant el projecte i es troba en fase de recerca de dades.

14. M’agradaria saber quines accions tenen pensades des de l’Ajuntament en relació al programa de RTVE “Comando Actualitat”, del dia 23.10.2009.

Sàpiga que s’ha enviat una carta de la senyora Alcaldessa adreçada a la direcció de TVE en la que manifesta el rebuig a la imatge esbiaixada que es va donar al barri de Bellvitge i de la ciutat de L’Hospitalet.  Al mateix temps, li agraïm el seu correu del dia 1 d’octubre en el que ens envia la resposta de RTVE sobre el programa i que anava adreçada a un veí.

15. Quan està prevista la construcció de la nova llar d’infants a Bellvitge.

Segons l’Àrea d’Urbanisme, el compromís és que durant aquest mandat es redactarà el projecte.

16. Quan esta prevista la construcció del nou casal d’avis a Bellvitge.

Des de l’Àrea corresponent s’està treballant en la preparació del projecte.

17. Quan està prevista la realització del circuit de footing a Bellvitge.

Se’ns informa que el projecte està redactat.

18. Quan està prevista la remodelació de la plaça Amalvigia.

Se’ns informa que el projecte està redactat.

19. Per què no és possible el soterrament de les vies de la línea de Vilanova mitjançant tuneladora en tot el recorregut pel barri de Bellvitge.

Segons dades facilitades per l’Agència de Desenvolupament Urbà (ADU), l’Ajuntament va sol·licitar al Ministeri de Foment que està redactant el projecte constructiu del nou túnel línia Vilanova, que l’obra s’executés mitjançant una tuneladora, aquesta petició ha estat estudiada i estimada parcialment pel Ministeri i per tant portarà a terme el tram situat aproximadament entre l’estació actual de Bellvitge i fins a la Torrassa amb tuneladora. Pel que fa al tram al que vostè es refereix el Ministeri de Foment va desestimar executar l’obra amb tuneladora per motius de seguretat ja que els estudis geològics dels terrenys desaconsellen utilitzar aquest mètode constructiu.

20. Entre el carrer Campoamor i els edificis de l’avinguda Europa hi han una sèrie de naus amb diferents usos, moltes desocupades. Des de fa anys es parla de que es derribarien i es faria un passeig a aquesta zona. És veritat? com està el tema?

D’acord amb el que ens informa l’Agència de Desenvolupament Urbà (ADU), entre el carrer Campoamor i l’avinguda Europa segons la cartografia de la ciutat no existeixen naus industrials. El que si ha estat objecte d’estudi és l’illa situada entre el carrer Cobalt, Leonardo da Vinci i Rosalia de Castro, per a la seva transformació a usos residencials. De moment encara no s’ha tramitat cap modificació de planejament i per tant els edificis industrials d’aquesta illa romanen amb la classificació industrial 22a.

Agraïm les  respostes als membres dels diferents departaments del nostre ajuntament, així com al gabinet de l’alcaldia, i considerem aquest fet com una demostració de transparència,  pas vital per a la participació ciutadana, i per tant per una democràcia d’alt nivell. Seguint aquesta manera de fer, deixem aquesta informació en mans dels veïns i veïnes.

Per la nostra part estudiarem les respostes per tal de, en cas de que fons necessari, plantejar noves consultes.

Had a relaxing few hourd out there knocking on doors yestrday afternoon .. met some nice people, one minor grumpy and one came to the door with a cathitor (sorry if spellins wrong.) The end result was some more nice people interested in real estate but not generally doing anything right now. I did get a tentative appointment from a nice lady who is planning a move early next year. Why don’t we get out there more ..
I just offer a property report so I am giving something and if it seems ok then ask if they are moving but the conversation leads itself to be answered .. Agents Try it!It doesn’t hurt really.

A cold snap has produced ice and snow on O Quy Ho Mountain Pass in the northern region of Sa Pa (Photo: SGGP)

Low temperatures together with drizzling rain and fog has combined to produce snow and ice on the top of O Quy Ho Mountain Pass in Sa Pa District, a famous tourist area in the northwest province of Lao Cai.

It is the region’s record-low for the year, Mr. Hai added.

All schools in Sa Pa District have been closed as local residents stay indoors to try to keep warm.

The temperature in Lao Cai City was 12 degrees Celcius on November 21.

Sometimes we come to the conclusion that we have to take step back and re evaluatwe where we currently are …..
In canging jobs or companies back in July its aken me some time to understand me and where I want to go … Thanks to Mark L for poking me and getting me thinking what I am and again where I want to be.

Some of the reason we all probably loose our way is becoming comfortable where we are and our view on the world become secure. It takes people and circi=umstrances to get us to re evaluate and let us be reborn to our new selves … Have you been here? Mid life crisis possbly! Its positive though .. None of this is negative or a feeling of depression but realisation that a step outside the comfort zone is happening ……. It’s refreshing!

Adelaide, November. I arrive in the middle of the most severe November heatwave since records began. It’s not that hot when I arrive: only in the mid-thirties.

I move between a severely air-conditioned office and a severely air-conditioned hotel room, hardly noticing the relentless heat. A small army of volunteers in the meeting room below work through three shifts, calling the elderly and vulnerable, checking they are OK and giving them advice about surviving the heat.

The emergency services are called with alarming regularity: we save quite a few lives in the space of ten days, summoning ambulances and police to those whom we fail to contact. It is tedious but rewarding work.

In the evening I stroll through quiet city streets, enjoying the coolness of temperatures down in the low thirties. Christmas street signs still seem out of place to my northern hemisphere head: colourful lamp-post signs of baubles, candy canes and wrapping ribbon seem a little tame but there is no point in twinkling lights when we are approaching the longest day of the year. The odd storefront Christmas tree adds colour but I miss the darkness of Grafton Street turned to Christmas magic by red fairy lights and Georgian garlands.

Rigoni’s is one of my favourite places to eat Italian. I sit at the restaurant bar sipping a local GSM red, until the bar tender confesses she has poured a cabernet sauvignon by accident. Never mind. My bruschetta tastes good until I find one, then a second, human hair amongst the tomatoes. My dish is graciously swept away and replaced quickly, but no apology. A quiet top-up of the incorrect wine in my glass is appreciated as a gesture.

As I walk back to my hotel the beach volleyball place is buzzing. Dozens of people play competitively on the man-made city beach in the fading light, despite the heat. These South Australians are tough.

A day later the fires begin. Many regions across three states are at catastrophic fire danger levels. Temperatures soar into the mid-forties in Adelaide. I sit with my colleagues watching the fire service website and waiting. Every fifteen minutes the radio wails an old-fashioned but attention-grabbing siren. The announcer reads out the fire warnings for the Yorke peninsula. A scrub fire is heading towards a small town and people have been warned to activate their fire plan. Across the south-east of Australia, Red Cross volunteers are on high alert.

In South Australia we turn our focus away from the fire momentarily to watch the dry lightning approaching from the west, threatening more scrub fires where they hit land. Can this be only November? And yet it only seems weeks ago that the last fire season finally ended.

At the airport I sit and wait for my flight, hoping the dry lightning will not delay me. The powerful air-conditioning in the Qantas lounge does not work within a few metres of the plate-glass windows overlooking the tarmac. I sit at a rare empty seat and swelter. The cool change is coming, they swear. I watch a fellow traveller, a youngish man who is not as carefully coiffed and manicured and fashion-obsessed as many city men here. He is very well dressed but there is the air of a young fogey about him, an independence of style, a touch of dishevelment. I have a wave of homesickness for London.

A change of plane and four hours later, I touch down in Melbourne. The air is blessedly cool and smells of India. Must be all the jasmine in the air. Let’s see what the weekend brings.

A sensação que eu acordei hoje é a de tudo resolvido. Sabe quando tu passa [ o que parecem ser anos] sofrendo angustiada por uma decisão e um belo dia, em que tu achava que nada mais ia funcionar, tu vê tudo com uma clareza que te deixa até entediada? Sabe? Bem-vindo ao meu mundo.

A busca pela resolução de problemas é movimentação saudável, não se preocupem. Estamos sempre pensando em algo pra nos incomodar, pra evitar pensar no inevitável e toda aquele blábláblá que seu professor de filosofia já deve ter dito. Acontece que quando algo ocupa toda a tua ansiedade por meses e um belo dia se resolve, rola um luto, um vazio, uma saudade do problema. Por favor, não façam como eu e arranjarem outro bem igualzinho.

Não poderei escrever hoje, phino, porque não consegui pensar em nenhuma reclamação ou celebração da vida.  Ao contrário dos contos de fada, filmes e livros, a nossa vida tende a não ter switches ou dramas muito profundos.  O que deixa a vida dessa colunista comum demais pro gosto dela. Por exemplo, o falecido escritor Kurt Vonnegut fez um gráfico que mostro abaixo comparando nossas vidas aos dramas e fantasias da ficção.

Se em Cinderella, a dor e o prazer se mesclam em altos e baixos de deixar qualquer Jimmy Choo na rasteira, na gata borralheira de todos nós, o salto fica ali em uns 5 cm no máximo, sem bico fino. Os poucos que conseguem aproveitar essa montanha russa de parque de diversões de praia gaúcha como se fosse uma do Busch Gardens, é que vivem felizes para todo o sempre.  Estamos em busca.

Now that the facts of Eskom’s corporate governance debacle are starting to emerge, it is time to start shedding light on some aspects of this unsavoury matter. We must accept as a fact that SA has destroyed a company that once received accolades as the best global utility company. This has been done through suspect reasoning and decision making.

Things are not right at Eskom. After the previous crisis, astute observers called for an inquiry to discover what happened so that we could avoid another crisis.

This call was ignored by Eskom’s management, board and shareholders.

Now we have fallen into another crisis, notwithstanding the existence of a so-called robust board. If unrestrained, Eskom’s leadership will inflict more damage on a once proud institution.

The term corporate governance is bandied about without any meaning attached to it. My take on corporate governance is that it is about the management of corporate power. It is the process of controlling management and balancing the interests of all stakeholders in the corporation in order to ensure responsible behaviour with a view to achieving the maximum level of efficiency and sustainability.

This requires the proper delimitation of the power of the board of directors and company officers, and the practices that they adopt and are permitted to adopt.
