Q: I’m guessing you wouldn’t know the difference between a foil, epee and sabre were they laid in front of you. And yet you find it somehow appropriate that you judge the very nature of the sport of fencing from behind your keyboard. I guess my question would be, where do you get the nerve?

A: The nerve comes very natural to me, Armando, like my way with words and stuff, and my lilac scent. I didn’t “get” it from anywhere… I’ve always had it (though I hear they now sell it at Wal-Mart for a very decent price). To assume that I wouldn’t deconstruct a game I may or may not know… well, that’s on you.

Besides, I would, in fact, know the difference between a foil, epee and sabre. Now, whether or not that’s thanks to a quick google search I’m not saying one way or another. But I could at least feign a certain level of knowledge when it comes to your game. Again, that’s game.

A: Now that’s a question… well, a series of questions, which I will respond to in reverse order.

You ask “what gives?” Santa Clause, Mother Theresa, the Red Cross and this page (The Art of the Plug, coming soon, watch this space). As it pertains to my decision, I believe I explained myself quite skillfully in my original column. As a Swede, you’re surely aware of Jan-Ove Waldner’s performance at the 2004 Olympics, when he reached the semifinals at almost 40. Are you saying with 20 years and 50 pounds, he couldn’t perform at least moderately well? Well are you?

You ask “are you sure you’re not thinking of table football?” Yes, I’m sure.

You ask “seriously?” Yes, seriously.

You ask “Table Tennis not a sport?” Yes… wait… no… well, yes, table tennis is not a sport. No, it’s not a sport. So yes and no. Clear?

Q: You heard Carson Palmer’s offseason comments, right? That someone was going to die during a game? Do you agree?

A: Oh.. well,  uh… after that, I’ve got this other thing I’ve got to go to. You know… life of a celebrity. And then, you know… I’m very busy, just as a general statement of fact. I don’t really know when I could squeeze in… a, uh, match. Which is lucky for you! But again, uh, sorry to disappoint. Gotta go, yo.

The Junior 8X8 team was gaining confidence but when we downloaded this one and read the word ‘jumbled’ followed by the word ‘encoded’ we were nonplussed. Then we noticed that ten of the answers were ‘thematic’. Despair! We wondered aloud whether Listener crosswords should come with letters A to F according to difficulty – just to warn off the beginners. A stiff drink was called for!

I got out my colours and coloured in the sets of four (two normal, one jumbled, one encoded) – but that just turned into a confused and useless tartan hotchpotch that masked even the clues we solved – abandon that!

We set to and were surprised when, by the end of the evening we had solved two-thirds of the clues. Great, straight-forward clueing gave us EMPRESS, PODEX, NEODYMIUM, WIT, MARYBUD, PLAIDMAN, EIGNE, ANNATES, STRESSING OUT and most of the down clues: FERNYTICKLES, AMEER, IPSO, URI, KENYA, PSAMMOPHILES, STUDDINGSAIL, REALTOR, BREEDINGS, V-SHAPES, REIGN, CRIES, SOMA and GED.

It was easy enough to identify most of those that had to go in normally, because of useful intersecting words, and it was obvious that GED and SOMA had to be jumbles. We could even work out how MARYBUD had to be jumbled to fit with existing words but this is where inexperience brought us to a standstill.

Problem no. 1 – half a dozen words to be entered normally that we couldn’t even find because of our lack of skill. For an entire day, we laboured towards INDISPUTABLE. Of course, it came up as one of the few possible words in a number of word-finding programmes but who would have thought it could mean ‘liquid’? EPAULET, RAISE CAIN and INHIBIT are obvious solutions (once you have them) but they evaded us until we had the help of a superior solver. And HECHS? Yes, it is obvious that HES have to go round CH(ina) but we wasted lots of time hunting for the obvious.

Problem no. 2 – CRIES and ANNATES clearly had to be coded but what about the Es of the two words that intersected with each other? The preamble stated very clearly that no letter was encoded to itself (later on that condemned to the bin a putative ‘FIRST AUSLESE’ which, in a nasty linguistic jumble, looked like fitting in at 1ac – of course the F of FERNYTICKLES couldn’t be the code for the F of First – it was the K of KIRSCHWASSER).

We shelved that problem for later. Time for a strong drink – and RESINATA had appeared, entered normally, as one of the thematic words. 9d could even be CHAMPAGNE (of course, it wasn’t) but our local drink, KIR, was tempting us at 31ac. Suddenly this looked like being a very boozy evening (It was Saturday by now!)

We were able to sort out roughly which of the remaining solutions were to be jumbles and which to be encoded but we created out own problem no. 3. BRANDY PAWNEE seemed to go into 23ac and give us some of the remaining code letters that we needed, (especially that elusive W) but I was convinced that 21d was going to be a jumble of BURGUNDY – that clashed! And so did SLIVOVITZ at 9d.  Oh, clever Sabre! It’s the alternative spelling of SLIVOWITZ – and stupid me! Of course, 10d is jumbled BURGUNDY and 21d produces an encoded SAUTERNE.

We were still hunting for that elusive letter that W encoded to! It appeared in KIRSCHWASSER and in the intersecting SLIVOWITZ and BRANDY PAWNEE (now who would drink that?) but we had to complete our boozy evening with PORT, POMBE and QUETSCH before we could fill in the final letters of our jumbles and slot the N of STUDDINGSAIL into all those W gaps. (Can anyone explain Whirly-Birly to me? NPAIXO-TAIXO?)

Time for a celebration cup which we raised to all you solvers who manage mental gymnastics like this in a couple of hours and to the remarkable mind of a genius who can set something like this. Cheers, Sabre!

After a trip to the bank and the supermarket, we left Bamako just after 10am. Last night’s briefing with Matt and Tom outlined the next 9 days which we will be spending seeing some of the many sights in Mali. Our first ‘attraction’ will be the Djenné mosque, the largest mud mosque in the world. Our goal for today was to get a decent distance along the route to Djenné, rough camping somewhere near to Ségou.

Unfortunately, I spent much of today’s drive to Ségou asleep! The late nights and early mornings of the last week in both Mauritania and Bamako, coupled with the heat have made me really drowsy and so I caught some zzzzs today in the truck. I did, however, make sure I was awake for the usual marmite sandwich at lunch. We were joined at lunch by a group of around 10 kids who came to watch us, just staring, smiling and saying nothing, totally intrigued by this strange group sitting in a truck eating sandwiches.

On our arrival to Mali – both at the border and around the hostel in Bamako – I have noticed an increase in the number of children who approach us with bowls or buckets saying “Donne-moi un cadeau” (give me a present). I have found it a very difficult situation to react to. On the one hand, of course it is natural to feel sympathy for the kids when you see their tiny frames and their expressions. The small change or scraps of food that they are asking for are hardly demanding and it is not a great sacrifice for us to give them something from our supplies. You naturally want to help in any way that you can. In particular, it doesn’t make you feel comfortable if you are sat in the bus eating or you are buying a snack and these kids are asking you for something at the same time. You feel guilty and greedy or even try to wait to eat until you are out of their line of sight. On top of that, any money or food that you give to one child is unfair because of the number of children in exactly that situation who would greatly appreciate whatever you have to give to them. Anything you do do is a short-term fix, a one-off which won’t necessarily be repeated by anyone else and which isn’t going to change anything long term.

The very fact that the kids are asking for this ‘cadeau’ is problematic and the whole relationship that it creates between visiting ‘rich’ tourist and the local people is one of guilt- and pity-driven charity. Giving a kid a present therefore reinforces this ‘expectation’ that tourists = money. What’s more, for me at least, there’s something strange about the act of giving out gifts, whether they be footballs, pens or hats to the kids. It isn’t right that I feel ‘proud’ or even happy to be able to do it. Should we feel proud of ourselves just for the fact that we happen to have been born in a country where we have been lucky to have everything we could ever want let alone need and where we have enough to give any surplus to other people? Obviously having this opinion when on a charity-run overland trip does sound very hypocritical! Especially when that charity is an English registered. My justification of that is that I believe that Sabre’s work is going towards making a more sustained difference to a community by building schools and providing vehicles for the communities. Thanks in part to Sabre’s donations, children can benefit from a good education and maybe, small business owners can transport their goods further afield to neighbouring markets. And for me, that is a better way to give to a community than providing food, money or even pens and hats to children in local villages. Anyway, enough philosophising…. Back to our trip!

We stopped shortly after lunch for Matt, our driver, to pick up something to eat. He had not had a sandwich with the rest of us at lunch, and instead pulled up at a small stall on the side of the road selling delicious lamb skewers (yes, I had a second lunch…) and hot tea. At 500 CFAs for a whole plate of lamb, the food was a bargain and a lot more tasty than a marmite sandwich. On other overland journeys that he has done, a tight budget has meant that Matt has encouraged this type of lunch but I think he did not want to enforce such a routine into us if we had settled into our ways during the first half of the trip! Needless to say, after smelling and tasting the food at the side of the road, we have vowed to eat lunch like this wherever possible for the remaining 3 weeks. And to go back to my points above, what better way to give some money to small business owners in a more sustainable way!

At around 4pm we pulled off the road and Matt and Tom went for a stroll into the nearby village to ask whether they would mind us camping near to them. When they said yes, we started setting up and before long had an audience of around 20 kids watching our every move. A quick hunt for an inflated football and ten tent set-ups later, and we started a game of football for them to join in. What better time than now to finally cut up the huge 5kg watermelon that we bought on our first night in Mali than when 25 sweaty men aged from about 4 to 30-something (not sure how old Matt is!) were running around all nice and sweaty (hmmm, no shower facilities out here, I may need a new tent mate!)? It was great to get to the camping spot while it was still light – something we have not been able to do as much whilst getting the miles under our belt.

A big watermelon and 3 pans of freshly popped popcorn later, the kids left us to ear and we had even more food (beef in sauce d’arachide – peanut sauce, a staple here). Once we had finished they walked back again from their village and spent at least half an hour asking for their photos to be taken by Kim. 57 shots later, we started packing up for bed – still with an audience – and made our way to sleep, hoping that the nearby cattle would let us have some rest.

I personally had a great night sleep but cannot vouch for that of the rest of the group…As if on cue at 6am, I woke to a mooing herd providing me with the best natural alarm clock I have ever used (see video). Apparently they had been doing that intermittently all night, but I was so tired that I must have been able to block it out in favour of a good 9 hour sleep… that and the smelly football player beside me….

I’ve had this release for a few months now, and I have to say that it’s a really unique,  original, cinematic, and atmospheric piece of music. A great start to a label which is clearly going to be focussed on pushing the boundaries of what is drum & bass. ST Holdings, the distributor for Darkestral, have confirmed that the release will be a limited edition run of 500 copies on Black & White streaked vinyl, untreated black reverse board with overprinted logo.

Das GDS Unternehmen Sabre stellt in seiner jüngst veröffentlichten Umfrage Global Trends Survey heraus, dass sich die Reiseindustrie gerade in einem Wettrennen um Mobile Services und Dienste nach der Buchung befindet: “Industry Races to Deliver Mobile Applications and Post-Booking Solutions“.

Folgende Feature haben laut Umfrage das stärkste Interesse sowohl bei Geschäfts- als auch Urlaubsreisenden:

• Flugstatusinformationen (72 %)
• Wettervorhersagen (68 %)
• Hotelumgebung auf einer Karte anzeigen (67 %)
• Flight performance [kann ich nicht interpretieren] (65 %)
• Informationen zum Ziel und City Guides (64 %)

Interessant sind auch die Ergebnisse des Vergleichs Europa mit Nordamerika, in dem sich zeigt, dass mehr Europäer bestimmte Dienste wollen, als Nordamerikaner:

• 71 % der Europäer wollen mit dem Mobilen Gerät einchecken, verglichen zu 64 % Nordamerikaner.
• 64 % der Europäer würden gerne mit dem Mobilen Gerät einen Sitzplatz im Flugzeug wählen, verglichen zu 59 % Nordamerikaner.
• 55 % der Europäer wollen ihr Reisegepäck mobil verfolgen lassen, bei den Nordamerikanern nur 45 %.
• 54 % der Europäer würden gerne mit ihrem Smartphone bei Flügen in eine höhere Klasse umbuchen, verglichen zu den 44 % der Nordamerikaner.

Diese Ergebnisse verwundern mich nicht sonderlich, denn den Nordamerikanern stehen derart Dienste teilweise schon zur Verfügung, den Europäern weniger, so das sie natürlich ein größeres Bedürfnis danach haben.

A comprehensive computer-based training programe is now available online for all aspiring candidates from across the globe in either Amadeus or Galileo or Sabre, teaching the complete IATA Fare Construction Formula as taught manualy in Level 1 (Foundation) and Level 2 (Consultant) training programs of IATA.

But before enrolling directly with IATA, an aspiring candidate must pass through airlines PNR Mangement Course and Automated Fares Course from us so that they can directly enroll with IATA for self study of their Advanced GDS Fares & Ticketing program.

Many new aspiring candidates think or presume that to persue a prospective career in the aviation industry as Counter Staff is to go or begin with Level 1 (Foundation) and gradually proceed to Level 2 (Consultant) and so on……this is actually NOT TRUE with the advent of GDS (Global Distribution Systems, like Amadeus, Galileo, Sabre, Worldspan, Abacus, Apollo and so on…).

The Foundation and Consultant levels were useful when there were no computers in the offices of airlines and travel agencies to execute air reservation/s and issue (or print) air-ticket/s.

The staff in those days used to work out manually the fare/s for complexed international itineraries (as I used to do and sometimes used to take some pain killer tablet/s to overcome those stressful and demanding days in the office to meet the challenge/s of constructing the fare/s) and make of the schedule of flights using RED and BLUE ABC manuals (now it is called OAG and still available in the market for which I was appointed their sales coordinator in India till recently).

All the aviation industry entities (as described below) were compelled to susbcribe for costly manuals such as ABC (now OAG, Official Airlines Guide), APT (Airlines Passenger Tariff) & PAT (Passengers Air Tariff), now both of these combined and published as AT (Air Tariff) by IATA Netherlands, General Fares & Rules Books on WH (Western Hemispere) & EH (Eastern Hemisphere) and so on…

In todays era of rapid computerisation, practically all the aviation industry entities, such as Airlines, GSA (General Sales Agents of a particular airliner in a specific alloted region which act as offices of that particular Airlines), Travel Agencies (IATA or Non-IATA), Airlines Business Process Outsourced (BPOs or back offices) do not subscribe to any manuals on which the Foundation and Consultant training is based as everything now is available on any one of the powerful Global Distribution Systems (GDS), as cited above.

With the advent of GDS in the office of the aviation industry entities, the staff can now easily access a wide range of information through the proper use of the system in which they will be working.

A trained staff with PNR Management and in Automated Fares & eTicketing Course/s can now see LIVE seat inventory for almost all the major and low cost airliners of the world, pick up an appropriate seat as per Fare selected and rules governing it, make instant reservations and create PNRs (Passenger Name & Recod Locator File in an GDS) and issue effortlessly Electronic Tickets (eTickets) without bothering to take any pain killers….. sometimes I envy the present day aviation staff as they have so many modern day-to-day equipments, techniques and training available at their disposal to function and maximise their work output, and in less stressful environment.

Here’s an LCARS Master Systems display I recently finished. It was a commission for someone who wishes to remain nameless.

Not much is known about the Sabre class. There is a section about it in the ST:DS9 Tech manual but said publication is notoriously innacurate so cannot be trusted, even though it is the only canon reference.

The tech manual has the Sabre class at about 53 metres tall. That would allow for 13 decks at 4 metres each.

Another reference I found on the web had the ship at 48 metres tall.

I decided to go for something in between.

Earlier this year the city buffed the famous SABRE burner on the L.A. River.

Yesterday officials began cleaning the M.T.A. roller piece on the L.A. River.

Contractor workers for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers begin painting over the gigantic letters, “MTA,” along the concrete bank of the Los Angeles River Thursday Oct. 8, 2009.

The cost of removing the piece has been estimated at just under $4,000,000.

FUCK THE BUFF!  WHAT A FUCKIN WASTE OF $4 MILLION DOLLARS.  KIDS NEED BOOKS AND TEACHERS NEED HIGHER SALARIES.

The Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division awarded Sabre Systems, Inc. a contract July 6, 2009, to support Naval Air Engineering Station (NAES) Lakehurst N.J. Expeditionary Airfields program (EAF), Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment (ALRE) and Support Equipment (SE) endeavors.

Sabre will serve as prime on this 5-year, $45.1 million effort, and will work with subcontractors L-3 Services; MTG Services; The Pennsylvania State University, Applied Research Laboratory; EG&G Technical Services; Epsilon Systems Solutions, Inc.; Five Rivers Services, LLC; General Scientific Corporation; Pacific Ship Repair & Fabrication, Inc.; Prism Maritime, LLC.

Sabre will provide engineering, logistics, ship installation and program management support to the EAF, ALRE and SE programs, and will also support to the NAES Lakehurst personnel for acquisition and life-cycle management of these Navy and Marine Corps mission systems. Senior Program Manager Charles Salvo will serve as the program manager on this task, which will be performed at Sabre’s Manasquan and Warminster, Pa. facilities, NAES Lakehurst, and on board ships.   (08/2009)
