Cyberslam 1996
02.16.96
Queens, New York
Your Host: Joey Styles

Opening Match: Bad Crew, Don E. Allen, the Dirt Bike Kid and Dino Sendoff.

This match basically is nothing and ends with Bad news crew hitting a chokeslam on Don E. Allen. Sandman hits the ring, and canes everyone as the crowd goes wild. Sandman grabs a mic, and says, “Let’s get extreme!”

Pablo Marquez v. Spiros Greco.

I looked up Spiros Greco online to see if there was any information about him, but they only thing mentioned is this match. Pablo hits a vertical dropkick, but Spiros gets the advantage, and stomps Pablo. Spiro hits a flying closeline, but only gets a two. Spiros hits a double chop that looked very weak, and I do not know if their giving him X-Pac heat or heel heat. “Who are you” chant breaks out. However, Spiros dominates the match. Hey, hat guy is there. Spiros hits a shoulder block followed by a side stretch, and with that, he gets the win @ 4:06. Nothing much to say about this one; it was just an extended squash.

Taz vs. Joel Hartgood

“Taz is going to kill you” chants break out. Taz does a beat down on this jobber. Taz hits a vicious closeline, and then a belly-to-belly Tazplex. Joel gets a sunset flip, but can’t remain on offense. The head drop tazplex, and then the tazmission ends it. Taz beat everyone down as they try to help this guy.Whipreck hits the ring and nails Fonzie. Mikey then beats down Taz, but goes to the top rope, and Taz hits a taxsuplex. Mikey gets put in the Tazmission. @ 2:30. Another match that makes Taz look strong for his year a waited match with Sabu at Barely Legal 1997 ½*

Joey is doing the TV intro, when the lights go out, and we are re-introduced to.Brian Pillman! He complains about being fired from WCW. He says that Eric Bischoff is each one of these smart marks rolled up into one. Pillman then says “smart marks”. He says what is a smart mark…A mark with a high IQ? He says a mark is a guy that believes that OJ didn’t do it, and a mark is each and one of you sorry bitches. Pillman says he is going yank out his Johnson and piss this entire place. Pillman goes to, but everyone hits the ring. He calls Heyman the “booker man”. They then say, “He’s shooting, he’s shooting. Pillman spits on a fan, and the fan goes for a punch, but Pillman duck, and then beats the shit out of him. Shane Douglas hits the ring, but Pillman runs. Douglas gets on the mic—and says, “Get that blonde piece of shit out of WCW—or I will beat his ass tonight”. One of the best promos I have ever seen. Pillman delivered that promo better than anyone ever could. They also did a great job of making this really look real as possible. Pillman got some great heat—and they did an excellent job with the beat down on the “fan”. Awesome delivery and truly one of the best segments I have ever seen.

Mr. Hughes vs. Buh Buh Ray Dudley.

This was the stuttering gimmick of Dudley in ECW. The match was very short, and ends with Big Dick jumping Hughes—and Ray hitting a top splash from the top @ 0:30. DUD

The Headhunters vs. The Bruise Brothers

They announced before the match that New Jack would not be here. They fight outside for a bit, then we head into the ring as a Headhunter hits a moonsault on Bruise Brother while the other Bruise Brother does something to the other Headhunter that the camera misses. Bruise Brothers are announced as the winners at 4:15. DUD

Tommy Dreamer and Beulah come out. Tommy says that Raven hurt his shoulder. Raven and his flock hit the ring. Raven says Dreamer should prepare to die. The bruiser Brothers come out to help Dreamer, but end up turning on him by joining Raven’s flock. They crotch Dreamer a few times on the ring post; then they leave.

JT Smith v. Axl Rotten

They brawl to the outside; Axl nails him with some weapons in the head. Axl chokes JT with a rope. Axl is nailing him with wood and other objects. JT smith recovers and hits Axl with a blind-sided chair shot. JT attacks hat-guy. Axl gets back on the offense, but misses with a big splash in the corner. Axl comes back, but JT fires back. JT hits a scoop slam, and struts around. He grabs a chair, and goes up to the top. He trips, but it is on purpose. Axl turns his back—and JT Smith nails him with the chair. JT then does a beatdown after the match—and hits the moonsault with the chair perfectly. Hack Myers makes the save. @ 8:30. Garbage brawl as you expect. Axl dominated most of the match by using weapons. I loved the finish, and it showed how much of a genius Heyman was. *3/4

Dog Collar Match: The Eliminators/Stevie Richards vs. Pitbulls/Francine.

Richards takes the chain off, and attacks Pitbulls. Richards hangs Pitbull II. Elim. hit a superplex followed by a big splash from the top. Richards goes for a cover, but doesn’t get it. Double leg sweep on Pitbull by Eliminators. Pitbull tries coming back, but Stevie Kick to the back of Pitbull’s head. Pitbull tries to establish another comeback, but Stevie-kick to the head. On the outside, Pitbulls take control of the match Pitbull II. They do some more garbage brawling on the outside. They go out in the crowd. Later on, the Eliminators get the pin @ 12:00. Not a bad brawl. They did a good job of letting the heels get some heat by beating up women, and getting a 3-2 advantage on it. I really thought Stevie Richards gimmick was great at this time. The Eliminators were a good tag team, and in my opinion one of the best overall tag-teams in ECW. They had a great character—being these sick-os, psychotic, do not give a crap heels—that got them good heat with a hard crowd to get over. **

TV Title: Sabu vs. 2 Cold Scorpio

Sabu tries to get an advantage, but 2 cold kicks him in the face. Sabu then gets a chair, and uses it to hurt 2 Cold. Sabu sets up the chair as 2 Cold is on the outside, and Sabu uses the chair to jump out of the ring. Back in the ring, Sabu goes for a cover, but only gets two. Scoop slam by Sabu followed by springshot knee-drop. 2 Cold escapes a powerbomb; then hits one of his own. Scoop Slam followed by a big top rope leg drop. 2 Cold talks some crap to the fans, and gets a chair. Back in the ring, 2 Cold beats down Sabu, and sets up a chair. 2 Cold hits a bulldog onto the chair. Both men exchange blows, but 2 Cold gets the advantage. 2 Cold goes for a bulldog, but Sabu counters. Sabu then uses the chair, jumps off and closelines 2 cold over. Back to their feet, Sabu hits a senton off the ring. Sabu grabs a chair, and clocks him with it. Back in the ring, Sabu hits a springboard kick to the face, but only gets two. 2 cold recovers, and hits a super kick. 2 cold grabs the chair, and runs into Sabu with it. 2 Cold works over Sabu, but Sabu counters a Rockbottom. Sabu hits a victory road. ONE-TWO-THRE-NO. Sabu puts in the camel-clutch. 2 Cold battles back, but Sabu hangs on. 2 Cold drops him, but Sabu puts in a sleeper hold. 2 Cold gets out and kicks him in the nuts. 2 Cold hits him in the nuts, again. 2 Cold hits him with a pizza pan, and then smashes him with a set up table. 2 Cold sets up for a superplex, and delivers, but only for 2. Sabu makes a comeback, and hits a splingshot moonsault. 2 Cold goes up and hits moonsault, but Sabu got his knees up. 2 Cold still makes a pin, but gets two. Sabu hits him with a chair; then puts the chair under his but. 2 Cold recovers, and drills him with the chair. 2 Cold calls for a TS Piledriver, but plants him forward. 2 Cold then hits a run in rebound of the top rope splash. 2 Cold pulls Sabu’s nuts into the rope. 2 Cold plaints Sabu with two boots to the face. 2 Cold misses a splash from the top. Both wrestlers are down. Sabu tries going up, but 2 Cold hits a sunset flip. ONE-TWO-NO. 2 Cold goes up to the top rope—but Sabu cuts him off. Sabu is going and hits a victory roll from the top. ONE-TWO-THR-NO. 2 Cold still remains on the offense. Irish whip, but Sabu holds on. Sabu throws 2 Cold over. Suicide-dive to the out side. Sabu hits a couple closelines, and then puts in an armbar. 2 Cold then gets another advantage, and starts working over Sabu. Sabu hangs on from the F-5 and both go to the floor. Sabu hits a moonsault, but Sabu catches the guardrail. Sabu gets the table and puts 2 Cold on it. Sabu goes in the ring, sets up the chair, jumps on the chair, and then jumps on 2 Cold. Huge ECW chant breaks out. 2 Cold is back up, and hits Sabu with a chair. 2 Cold goes for cover, but only gets 2. 2 Cold brings him back up, and sets up for a powerbomb. Sabu tries to block it, and flips in Franken Steiner. Sabu hits a moonsault press, but only gets two. Sabu goes for a moonsault, but misses. 2 Cold is back on offense and hits a powerbomb. 2 Cold goes for a moonsault into a leg drop, and gets it. ONE-TWO-THRE-NO. 2 Cold goes for a top rope leg drop and hits it with the chair on his face. ONE-TWO-THRE-NOOOO! 2 Cold goes up but catches a chair to the face. Sabu hits a Frankensteiner, but only gets another nearfall. Double closeline. 2 Cold gets up, and hits a 450 splash, but doesn’t go for a cover. He goes back up to the top with the chair, but misses. Sabu goes for a springboard with the chair on the face, and nails it. 30 seconds remain. Slingshot summersault. Sabu sells the left leg. ONE-TWO-THRE-NO. 2 Cold hits out, and there is the bell @ 30:00. When I saw this match, I was very little so I did not remember how great it was, but I heard tons of praise of it on the Internet. At first, the match was slow—and the pacing felt like it was going nowhere. 2 Cold was just hitting a couple moves; then Sabu would get some offense, but 2 Cold would get back on the offense and hit a move pause hit a move pause and so on. But once they got in the groove it was all smooth sailing from there. So many great spots in this match, that it would be hard to name them all. Sabu was excellent in the role he played, and he did not botch once. Sabu sold the knee effectively all the way through the course of the match. I did not really like how 2 Cold sold, though; all he did was get hit by Sabu’s moves, and get up before him. I do not think that selling is that believable. However, 2 Cold and Sabu clicked at the end, and put a good string of dramatic near-falls and counters at the end to get you on the edge of your seat. ****

Shane Douglas vs. Cactus Jack.

We start with Shane attacking Jack right of the bat. Shane Douglas hits a closeline with the necktie. Shane Douglas keeps beating down Foley. Foley tries to walk it off, and grabs a crutch and nails Douglas with it. Douglas beats down Douglas some more. Foley is reppin’ the cowboy boots tonight. Shane Douglas then goes up and flies Macho Man style with the double-axe-handle. Douglas is taking it to Jack. Shane Irish whips Jack into the corner and beats the crap out of him. Douglas hits a leg drag on Foley. The crowd wants Foley to die. Douglas blocks a suplex; then hits one, and crashes Foley into the guardrail. Douglas goes high and over the guardrail. OH MY GOD!!!!! Back in the ring, Douglas is a snapmare take over, and traps the chair in his foot. Off the top the rope, and onto the chair. Douglas works over the right knee, and hits elbow to the head. Foley comes back elbow to the chin, boot to the face and a chair to the back. Foley walks around, but then attacks Douglas. Slingshot into the ropes. Foley drives an elbow to the throat to Douglas, followed by another. Foley is working him over with boots to the temple. Styles says you can smell that hatred these two have for each other. Foley is driving some forearms to the end. Finger nails across Douglas’ back. Foley works over Douglas some more with some forearms. Douglas falls outside. Foley uses the table to trap Douglas, and drives an elbow. Foley hits drop toehold into the chair, but only gets a dos. Foley hits a Piledriver. ONE-TWO-NO. Douglas hits Foley with handcuffs, and Douglas set up his Best Friend not for Life. Douglas uses the chair to kill Douglas. He gets on the stick, and tells Foley to get up, so he can kick his ass. They ask if he wants to quit, and he says no. Foley tells Whipreck to get his ass out here. Douglas puts in the figure four. Mikey comes in—and knocks Foley out with the chair. Douglas gets the pinfall @ 15:45. This would end up setting up Whipreck-Foley for his farewell match. Not the best technically sound match, but they got the point of the match over well. This match just proves that Foley can put a good match on with just about anyone. Foley really did a good job of adding some drama in the match; he also took some really brutal chair shots at the end, which would be later copied by WWF in Rumble 1999.*** ¼

ECW Championship: Raven vs. Sandman.

Raven attacks Sandman off the bat. Raven knocks Sandman over, and jumps on him. Raven hits him with a chair, but Sandman reverses and Irish whip into the guardrail. Back in the ring, Sandman hits a delayed vertical brain buster. The whole flock comes in the match; they bump the ref twice. Richards hits a Stevie kick, but only for two. Raven botches a move, but pushes Sandman into the chair. Raven DDT on the chair. ONE-TWO-THREE. @ 8:30.Post match beatdown occurs. Heyman knew he needed to overbook this one because there was no way Sandman and Raven could have put off anything other than a DUD. However, this was not much better than a DUD. They tried the bag-of-tricks to add drama, but it really did not add much drama into the match. It was just excessively sloppy to get into at all. Too bad these two never clicked in the ring because the rivalry was booked great, but when it came time to deliver in the ring, it failed badly. 1/4*

Going Home: A huge mix bag tonight, but the good was remembered more in my head than the bad. I loved and thought the Pillman worked-shoot was done perfectly. I really enjoyed the Sabu-2 Cold match, and thought the Foley-Douglas match was great also. Their was some crappy stuff in the midcard, which is an easy pass, and the mainevent was an epic fail, but I still think there is enough good stuff to give this a solid thumbs up.

‘Selar Shaik Sabu’ or ‘Sabu Dastagir’ or just ‘Sabu’ as he was credited in his films, was born on January 27, 1924 in the jungles of Karapur near Mysore in the Kingdom of Mysore in British India to an Indian Mahout (elephant driver). Sabu was orphaned at the age of Seven, when his father passed away in 1931, a few years after his mother died in 1924 while giving birth to him. In keeping with the times, Sabu continued his familial profession and became a Fourth Generation Mahout and worked at the Maharaja of Mysore’s Royal Elephant Stable.

It was in the Royal Elephant stables of the Mysore Palace where Sabu was discovered by the documentary film-maker Robert Flaherty, whose wife Frances Flaherty, wrote to a friend in a letter from India in 1934 about a film project that they had tentatively titled as ‘Elephant Boy’, the storyline of which was loosely based on one of the tales in Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Books called "Toomai of the Elephants," that aimed to feed the popular British interest in the exotic details of life in its colonial empire.

Though I had been to the Mysore Palace about 13 years ago in 1996 and I hope to go there again but this time it will be more for it’s ‘Royal Elephant Stable’ where Sabu worked rather it’s ostentatious illumination.

Frances Flaherty wrote in her letter that they had not yet found an actor for the title role, but were interviewing possible candidates…

“I watch them play around, kicking a football, shouting and fighting like kids everywhere, and think of the strange stroke of fate that is hanging over one of them. There is one boy among them . . . different from the other sprightly little sprouts. He is rather pathetic, more reserved, an orphan. His mother’s family came from Assam, where the people are part Mongolian. His name is Sabu”.

Sabu and his older brother Sheik Dastagir as his guardian, were whisked away to England to complete the film in 1937 and became subsequent wards of the British government. It’s here that an error is supposed to have occurred when they passed through British Customs which led to the widespread misapprehension that the actor’s name was ‘Sabu Dastagir’, which was mostly done to help publicize the film.

According to the research done by journalist Philip Leibfried, the real name of ‘Sabu’ was ‘Selar Shaik Sabu’ and that his elder brother’s name was ‘Sheik Dastagir’ which was wrongly assumed to be the actor’s last name.

Sabu got excellent schooling in the process where he learnt the English language in preparation for his upcoming films and was finally struck by stardom on 5th April, 1937 when his film ‘Elephant Boy’ was released in cinema halls and the rest is history…

Sabu married Marilyn Cooper in 1948 [not to be confused with Broadway performer Marilyn Cooper (born in 1934)] while filming ‘Song of India’.

“Sergeant Sabu ("Elephant Boy") Dastagir, 22-year-old Indian who gained fame & fortune in peacetime films riding on the back of an elephant, was awarded the D.F.C. for riding a U.S. bomber as a tail gunner in an attack on a Japanese convoy off Borneo”.

The ‘Borneo’ in the aforementioned article is what got me interested in doing some research about Sabu and his Borneo bombing escapades, since my Grandparents used to live in the capital city of Jesselton in British North Borneo when their house was bombed during World War 2.
Sabu Dastagir as it turns out was a TSgt in USAAF (Technical Sergeant in United States Army Air Force) and a B-24 Tail Gunner in a Ball Turret with the 13th Air Force in the 307th Bombardment Group (Heavy) and posted to the 370th Bombardment Squadron where he flew on a “JANIE” 44-41535

After flying 42 missions over the South Pacific, Sabu was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with Four Clusters, in addition to the Presidential Unit Citation which was awarded to the entire crew for an unescorted, daylight attack on heavily defended airfields in the Truk Islands on March 29, 1944 followed by an unescorted mission against vital oil refineries at Balikpapan, Borneo (Indonesia) on October 3, 1944.

One needn’t look further than Sabu’s introductory scene in his debut film ‘Elephant Boy’ which showcased his confident and adventurous spirit which was unfortunately cut short by a fatal heart attack in 1963 at an untimely age of 39.

Sabu is is interred at the Forest Lawn – Hollywood Hills Cemetery along with his daughter Jasmine Sabu and elder brother Sheik Dastagir who was killed in 1960 when his Furniture Store that was jointly owned by the two men, was robbed.

Rewinding further back to the 1600s, it’s not surprising to find that a crafty colonial British trading venture such as the East India Company, which was granted the English Royal Charter to trade with the East Indies by Queen Elizabeth I on 31st December, 1600… also happened to be the pioneers in shipping Indian indentured servants to the British American colonies. However the Company’s increasing financial woes and it’s monopolistic practices not only triggered the Opium Wars with China’s Qing Dynasty and the Boston Tea Party in the Province of Massachusetts Bay leading up to the American Revolution but it also provided the clarion call for the Indian Rebellion of 1857, which finally sounded the death knell for the Company rule in India when the British Crown finally decided to assume direct administration of India, under the newly christened British Raj in 1858 and dissolved the East India Company on 1st January, 1874.

Despite the dissolution, the imperialistic legacy of East India Company still lives on through it’s flag and the uncanny similarities it shares with the American flag.

The ‘Trading and Colonizing’ tactics perfected by the East India Company which sent several ships to India loaded with British Traders who not only outsmarted a sizeable number of Indian Maharajas and Sultans over the years but also ensured that the fragmented subcontinent was ultimately consolidated into a single colony, with them becoming the Rulers of the country, they had come to learn from and trade with.

Now in pursuit of their American Dream, the Indian Americans seem to be dutifully following the footsteps of the East India Company by first “Trading” there way into the United States and then “Colonizing” the American stereotype of them being “Crafty Convenience Store Owners” aka Apu.

While most intellectual elite of Indian origin, prefer educating their way into cornering the White Collared Jobs, usually in the Tech or Medical field however there are a few who still prefer the old-fashioned way of cashing in on the traditional Indian business of “Disseminating Metaphysical Karmic Enlightenment” by becoming a celebrated Yoga teacher or a renowned “Spiritual Guru”.

Justice Sutherland stated…

“It is a matter of familiar observation and knowledge that the physical group characteristics of the Hindus render them readily distinguishable from the various groups of persons in this country commonly recognized as white. The children of English, French, German, Italian, Scandinavian, and other European parentage, quickly merge into the mass of our population and lose the distinctive hallmarks of their European origin. On the other hand, it cannot be doubted that the children born in this country of Hindu parents would retain indefinitely the clear evidence of their ancestry. It is very far from our thought to suggest the slightest question of racial superiority or inferiority. What we suggest is merely racial difference, and it is of such character and extent that the great body of our people instinctively recognize it and reject the thought of assimilation”.

Speaking of assimilation, Jayasri Majumdar Hart’s ‘Roots in the Sand’ which details the workarounds used by some immigrants (Indian men and Mexican women) to dodge the anti-immigration and anti-miscegenation laws in America at that time, presents a noteworthy dimension to the whole issue. Following is a paragraph quoted from her documentary to summarize it’s theme…

“As the (Indian) men prospered, they wanted to marry and settle down, though immigration laws forbade importing brides from India. So the men turned to the Mexican women working in the fields who, much like the women back home, covered their heads and bodies from the blazing sun. Valentina Alvarez married Rullia Singh, Rosario Perez married Purn Singh and Silveria Jill married Phoman Singh. They were among the earliest couples in a cross-cultural wedding boom born out of necessity in the Imperial Valley”.

Naruto, Chapter 470

Another exciting week from Naruto! This chapter was basically divided into two parts — the wrap up of Sakura’s confession to Naruto (go here if you have no idea what I’m talking about) and … the start of the battle between the sadistic Akatsuki member, Hoshigaki Kisame, and the 8-Tails Jinchuuriki, Killer Bee!

Maybe it’s due to a translation issue, but the end of Naruto and Sakura’s converstion was slightly vague. They went back and forth, and in the end, Naruto still didn’t believe that she genuinely has feelings for him, and Sakura stormed off to go look for Sasuke, herself, with Kiba, Lee, and Sai. I believe she was using the “I love you” card as a feint to get Naruto’s mind off Sasuke, but Naruto is way too dedicated to finding and saving his criminal(ly insane) homeboy.

The issue kicks up when the scene switches, and Kisame mounts his attack against Killer Bee and his newfound music teacher, Sabu. While distracted by Sabu, Killer Bee launches a pencil — yes, a pencil — at Kisame’s head, which he barely dodges. Infused with lightning chakra, Kisame admits that he would have been killed by the electrified pencil had he been hit with it — a definite nod to Bee’s strength. As the battle continues, Kisame reveals the chakra consuming power of Samehada, his sword, and because of this, proves a match for every one of Killer Bee’s attacks.

Both fighters regroup, and the chapter ends with the full transformation of Samehada, which honestly caught me off guard. Turns out, its a giant, disgusting looking, shark-like object with a giant mouth at the end. Here, take a look!

Weird, huh? Good chapter, overall — c’mon next week!!!

^Favorite moment: on page 12, Kisame reveals the never-before-demonstrated ability of the handle of Samehada to extend in a whip-like manner, giving the sword added range, and even more deadly power. Honestly, I don’t know if you can really call this weapon a “sword”, at this point.

——-

Naruto Shippuuden, Episode 134

First off, I am quite impressed with the Naruto animation staff. It seems they finally got the message — the “non-big-battle” episodes usually have terrible animation, but this one had great quality. Awesome. Secondly, the series is really picking up in speed. This is the episode before the Sasuke/Itachi fight, which is running kind of close to catching the manga. I’m predicting it right now — fillers are coming soon.

On to the episode. The “Hunt For Itachi” is in full swing, as both Sasuke’s and Naruto’s teams narrow in on the villanous Uchiha. The episode opens with Sasuke entering a cave, confronting Itachi, and promptly impaling him with a lightning sword. Of course this would be way too easy a defeat for the monstrous Itachi, and the “Itachi” turns out to be nothing more than a shadow clone, that tells Sasuke to meet him in the Uchiha hideout, alone.

On the way there, Sasuke actually runs into a shadow clone of Naruto, which gives the Konoha team Sasuke’s position. They quickly switch direction and look to intercept him, but there is no interference to be had in the confrontation between Itachi and Sasuke. In an embarrassing display, the Konoha shinobi are confronted by Tobi along the way, and held up from reaching Sasuke. Through a series of strange techniques, Tobi utterly toys with the ninja, and keeps them pinned down.

Similary, Kisame halts Sasuke’s team on the way to Itachi, and only lets Sasuke pass. To kill time, Kisame and Suigetsu engage in a sparring match — yet another scene that wasn’t included in the manga, so it was cool to see in motion.

At this point, only Sasuke is left to proceed. The episode ends with him walking toward Itachi’s location, with his trademark “i’m such a cool guy cuz i live life by revenge” look in his eyes.

Overall good! Again, the quality animation was the most surprising part — c’mon next week!!!

Favorite moment: I almost fell out of my chair when it happened. At 18:18, when Sakura charges Tobi, he dodges and says, “Olé!” — in the middle of a battle … in a Japanese anime. This man was chillin’ way too hard, at that moment.

Courtesy of Jason Gray (twitter @jgtokyo), here’s a great interview with Sabu, director of new proletariat novel-based film Kanikosen. Translated by @ryuganji

NT: Shinjo, the leader of the workers on the cannery boat, is played by Matsuda Ryuhei, so did you see him as carrying on the legacy of his father Matsuda Yusaku?

S: That’s exactly right. When I met him, he was the spitting image of Matsuda Yusaku. I was moved (laughs). Matsuda Yusaku had an aura of madness to him, but in terms of portraying that in a role I’d say Matsuda Ryuhei has probably surpassed him already. He has his own unique presence, and at the same time he’s also a capable actor.

Check out Part 1 and Part 2 for more on the film

I’ve noticed a certain amount of reluctance in some Japanese movie-lovers to give due credit to Ryuhei-san. When I think about it, all of these miserly types have been male which, considering Matsuda’s undeniable physical beauty and charm, is therefore not particularly surprising. However, I am personally aware of my own trepidation towards giving plaudits to the very beautiful for much the same reason (though not out of underlying envy). Under an article on Nippon Cinema for a new release of Kamikaze Girls on DVD, I struck up a quick commentary on the seductiveness of Anna Tsuchiya’s unique heritage and appearance, compared with her not-quite-proportionate amount of real talent. Talent she has, but undoubtedly much is owed to the exploitation by filmmakers and music production companies of her genetic diversity.

I was equally scrutinizing of Ryu-san for a similar reason as I began watching his acting, and I have happily given up trying to look for deception or laziness on his part. This is a young man with a hell of a lot to live up to, has had the majority of screen time on almost every movie since the tender age of fifteen, and doesn’t seem to take vacations. I now only interpret naysayers as betraying their own envy, either for his status as an actor or his appeal to young women. If he were at all plain I doubt that anyone would be trying to undermine his considerable talent.

Kanikosen looks to see this young yet well established star at his best and most mature – and I can’t wait for a subtitled DVD release in the West.

(I was going to give props to the enigmatic and geeeowgeous Arai Hirofumi who co-stars in this movie, but I would definitely lose any unbiased credibility)

WWE gets a lot of flack from the way they handled ECW and rightfully so. Back in 2006 most wrestling

WWE gets a lot of flack from the way they handled ECW and rightfully so. Back in 2006 most wrestling fans were under the impression that they were getting the ECW they knew and loved back on television under the WWE banner. You had Rob Van Dam, Sabu, Sandman, Paul Heyman and some WWE names like Kurt Angle thrown into the new ECW mix. The entrance resembled the old ECW entrance; the way they shot the matches was the same camera angle as the old ECW. There was excitement in the air for ECW fans and wrestling fans in general as it was a different outlet.

But as time went on WWE showed their hand on how they were handling ECW by turning it into another WWE brand with nothing different then anything you see on Monday’s and Friday’s. As time grew on and the ECW originals were either released or moved to different brands we began to see what ECW was becoming, a training ground for future stars, almost a transition brand from developmental (Florida Championship Wrestling) to the main roster.

Once I put away my feelings of hoping that one day this would be ECW again and accepted the fact that this was to be a training ground for future WWE Superstars I began to embrace the new ECW. The new ECW gave us a Main Event feud that one day will more then likely headline a Wrestlemania in CM Punk vs. John Morrison. The new ECW gave us The Miz & Morrison possibly one of the best Tag Teams in the last decade for the WWE. While ECW introduced us to future stars like Kofi Kingston, Evan Bourne and Jack Swagger.

With that being said I thought I’d take a look at the ECW roster as of right now in October and predict who in a year from now will be superstars while some wrestlers will be “future endeavored”. This list does not include already cemented superstars like Christian, Shelton Benjamin, William Regal, Goldust and Tommy Dreamer.

Future Stars:

Zack Ryder – Ryder has come a long way from his days as part of The Major Brothers/Hawkings & Ryder/Edgeheads days. For a while when paired up with Edge as part of “La Familia” it looked like Ryder would become another low-card talent to get a small rub from a huge star only to be released at some point (i.e. Luthur Reigns, Orlando Jordan, The Bashams etc.). But since coming to ECW under a new gimmick he has been able to show that he has the chances of being a talented worker.

WWE gave Ryder the opportunity to show off his craft against veteran and ECW Champion Christian who made Zack Ryder look like a star at the end of the night. Despite losing Ryder came out looking like a better wrestler then when he entered the ring, which is one of the reasons why WWE has put Christian in ECW. There is a possibility that at some point we could see Ryder with the ECW Championship around his waist. Come around draft time it is more then likely he will be moved to a different brand and hopefully to the Smackdown brand where he could potentially slide into a Intercontental title picture.

Woo Woo Woo. You know it.

Ezekiel Jackson – This guy looks like a future star. He reminds a lot of when Batista used to be Reverend D-Von’s manager, Deacon Batista and from what I’ve read the guy is a sponge when it comes to learning new wrestling skills. To me he has the better chances of being a strong face rather then a heel, I get the feeling that the fans want to embrace but can’t right now due to his backseat role with William Regal.

The thing about Big Zeke is that when it comes time for him to “graduate” from ECW he is a believable wrestler to be a force on a brand like RAW. It’s not secret that WWE needs fresh faces and having a fresh face on the RAW brand is something that is desperately needed. A face Big Zeke could be huge for the WWE. Unlike Zack Ryder this guy has future Main Eventer written all of him; hopefully in a year this guy will have a decent program going with a heel character like a Big Show; a veteran that can elevate his game to huge proportions.

Abraham Washington – Now this pick may surprise some. I’m not saying Abraham Washington will become an amazing wrestler, for one because we haven’t even seen him wrestle yet. I believe that at some point Abraham Washington will make a great manager or announcer for one of the brands similar to the path that Matt Striker road down that last couple of years.

As much as I’d hate to say it Jim Ross does not have many years left in him behind the booth hence one of the reasons why Todd Grisham was moved to Smackdown as an announcer. When good ol’ JR finally hangs up the microphone for good look for Matt Striker to move to the blue brand leaving a spot open at the ECW announce table. To me Abraham Washington can fill that spot very well. He seems to have a decent microphone presence and have the throwback skills to be the heel announcer during a show similar to the back when Jerry Lawler would work heel every Monday night.

But for the time being I’d like to see them hang the “Late Night” gimmick up for him and have him hooked up with a young superstar. With the best fit for Abraham being someone like an Ezekiel Jackson who let’s his in-ring work do the talking but when it comes to the promos needs that guy to put him over big. I love the old school idea of an actual manager patrolling the ring and I think Abraham Washington could fill that role well. While not a future Champion, he does have a potential future of being a decent announcer.

On The Fence:

Sheamus- – The Celtic Warrior is someone that could make a big splash a year from now if the cards are dealt to him. He has the potential to be an upper mid-carder at best or go down a road like Mike Knox; where you get a push then creative pulls you back in. Come draft time it will be interesting to see what road creative takes him down cause that could really determine the future for Sheamus in WWE.

If the Celtic Warrior is drafted or moved to Smackdown you have to figure he is on pace for a feud with Finlay for obvious reasons. If that is the case Finlay will make that kid into a future star by making him a better in-ring worker, if moved to RAW you have to think he will get put in a face roll with Hornswoggle as it was rumored at one point. While being paired with Hornswoggle will get you decent television time and over large with children, I feel that Sheamus only needs that one feud to ignite a mid-card level for himself in the WWE.

Vladimir Kozlov – At one point that made Kozlov into a juggernaut on the Smackdown brand, so much so that he was headline a Main Event for No Way Out this past February and headlining the Survivor Series PPV with Triple H & Jeff Hardy. Eventually creative saw that despite making him undefeated and juggernaut his in-ring work was not getting over with fans. His gimmick was out-played and the fans wanted something different.

They moved him over to the ECW brand in early part of this year only for him to be floating around up until recently when he was place with William Regal and Big Zeke. You can tell that stable will eventually disband with Kozlov staying a heel to feud with a face Big Zeke, hopefully giving Big Zeke the push heading towards a different brand. Kozlov is beginning to wear out his welcome in WWE and won’t surprise me if he becomes future endeavored come 2010.

The Bella Twins – Ever since The Bella Twins came to WWE they really haven’t don’t much except being moved around from brand to brand in less then a year. While both being stunningly beautiful the gimmick of twins really hasn’t worked in the WWE simply for the fact because creative seems to not know what to do with them except announce matches.

The only time I really felt like they had the right thing going for The Bella Twins was when they had them each managing a Tag Team (The Colons and Miz & Morrison) around Wrestlemania 25. One it gave us great Tag Team wrestling which is something wrestling fans craved, two it gave us finally managers for tag teams something wrestling fans also craved and three they had an actual storyline. Since then The Bellas just seem to hang out with a different guest host each week and tell us Yoshi Tatsu’s weight.

While both stunningly beautiful women they are leaning more towards the future endeavored side then anything else. Hopefully they go back to what they had for the twins in the early part of the year by placing them with an up and coming team separately.

Katie Lea Burchill – To me Katie Lea has the look of a potential wrestler in the women’s division similar to Victoria. She can be that psychotic looking diva who you know is ready for a fight and not a bikini contest. Just by her looks alone she would make a believable opponent for any face Women’s or Diva Champion.

Her time with her “brother” will more then likely end some point in 2010 whether by draft or by release (see below). Giving the opportunity for Katie Lea to become a powerful diva either the RAW or Smackdown brands wrestling for a championship. I feel like Katie Lea has more upside then either one of The Bella Twins when it comes to Divas.

Future Endeavored:

Paul Burchill – Does anyone remember Paul Burchill being teamed up with William Regal or does anyone remember the Pirate gimmick he did with Shelly Martinez? Well if you don’t youtube it now because I’m sure Paul Burchill would like to forget about it. It’s sad for me to put Burchill on this list because he is so talented but he has Elijah Burke syndrome written all over him where he is to talented to ever break through in the WWE.

Burchill could be a star if he went with his “ripper” gimmick that he’s currently using in a brand like TNA or even a ROH. While just like Elijah Burke who looked like could one day be a future headliner or upper-midcarder for some reason the creative team just can’t get him over in their eyes. He’s been with the company since 2006 and sporadically has shown up on television ever since. I’d hate to see it happen but I see Burchill being future endeavored from WWE, allowing Katie Lea to be elevated as a top Diva wrestler.

Yoshi Tatsu – Despite getting large pushes as of late on ECW television I just don’t see Yoshi Tatsu being a star. While he has decent in-ring work the WWE has never been to give a decent push with wrestlers of Asian minority like Yoshi. I’m not calling the WWE racist or knocking Asian wrestling at all, just the track record in WWE hasn’t been too good.

If anything Yoshi will become a comedy act like Kung Fu Naki is or like Tajiri was. All three of them are great in-ring workers but never seem to click with audience. If Yoshi is to ever make it as star in ECW he needs to stay in ECW longer then the other wrestlers. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Yoshi gets future endeavored sometime in the summer to early Fall of 2010.

Tyler Reks – It appears that of all the wrestlers on this list that Tyler Reks might be the most well rounded wrestler. They placed the Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) World Championship on him which makes me think that the kid has some sort of talent in the ring. But the biggest downside to that is that the gimmick they gave him, a surfer gimmick?

Seriously what is the 1992? You’re going to place a surfer gimmick on someone in 2009? Does creative expect the audience to pop whenever he says “cowabunga?” While it appears he is talented in the ring he has been given a horrible gimmick much like our last person on this list…

DJ Gabriel – Where has he been? One moment he was dancing to the ring with the very hot Alicia Fox and the next minute he’s off of television. When he was on television he looked very green as well. The kid clearly has the look to be a star but under the circumstances of a “dancing-Alex Wright-like” gimmick no way. While it appears he is the one wrestler most likely to be future endeavored, he better pray that they repackage him fast because despite having the look, he may be heading down the road of unemployment before 2009 runs out.

I like any old ECW fan have been disappointed with the way ECW has been handled by WWE. But the days of “hardcore wrestling” are basically done for the time being before being reinvention and revolutionized somewhere down the line again in the world of wrestling. But if I am to applaud anything WWE has done with ECW thus far it has to be the fact that it has become a good place to make future talent stars.

It’s brought up CM Punk, John Morrison, Kofi Kingston, The Miz, Evan Bourne and Jack Swagger. Wrestlers that in 2 to 3 years can be the top draws in the WWE and headlining Wrestlemania’s. We will look back at this time and remember that we first saw CM Punk vs. John Morrison in ECW and where Evan Bourne flew off the top rope.

One thing old school ECW and new ECW fans alike can find common ground on agreeing on is that despite it not being the old barbed wire, hat guy or sign guy in the front row, just like the old ECW it introduced new wrestlers and made them into stars right before our eyes. While not breaking tables, throwing thumbtacks down on the mat and operating in bingo halls, the spirit of ECW of turning a nobody into a somebody lives on to this day.

Released August 7, 2001

Your host is Joey Styles.

Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko vs. Tag Team Champions Sabu and Tazmaniac (w/ Paul E. Dangerously and 911) (2/25/95)

This pre-match fun is brought to you by The Public Enemy: Despite Rocco being in a wheelchair, PE shows up and Grunge talks a bunch of trash to Benoit and Malenko, which starts a 2-on-1 brawl. Once Grunge gets handled, Malenko wheels Rocco down the walkway, shoving him right into a vicious clothesline from Benoit! Benoit sets Rocco back on the chair and sends him barreling into the guardrail! Grunge takes some punishment inside, but here come Sabu and Taz. The match is on. No tag rules. Malenko and Benoit take early control with stomps. Sabu hits Malenko with a springboard leg lariat for two, but he misses a charge and falls outside. Looks like the strategy is to keep Sabu on the floor while punishing Taz inside. When Sabu does make it back in, Malenko hits him with a pair of stalling brainbusters for two. Benoit holds Sabu on his shoulders while Malenko drives him into the mat from the top rope! Taz sneaks up and gives Malenko a pump handle suplex. Belly-to-belly on Benoit. Malenko slows Taz down momentarily, but Taz manages to score a reverse suplex. He catches Benoit going up top with snake eyes, then nails him with a release German suplex. Malenko puts a stop to that and grabs a reverse leg bar on Taz while Benoit adds a bunch of stomps. Taz makes it out of the hold, but he’s like way hurt, so 911 takes him to the back. Sabu is double-teamed inside and takes a scary back body drop. Wow, they are alluding to the spot that broke Sabu’s neck! Disturbing? They go for the double back body drop again, but Sabu hits them with a double dropkick, sending them both outside. Somersault plancha on Malenko! Suicide dive on Benoit! Followed up by an asai moonsault! Plancha onto both Malenko and Benoit! Triple jump tope! Sabu has to stop and catch his breath after all that. He brings Malenko inside and sets up a table flat in the corner and sets a chair on the table. He tries climbing this makeshift ladder of his, but Benoit shoves him off into an ugly landing on the chair. He takes Sabu back up onto the table and sets him up for a powerbomb (while Paul E. cracks Malenko with the phone in a last ditch effort), the powerbomb connects, 1-2-3! New champions! (10:29) Public Enemy returns (and Rocco has suddenly regained the power to walk) to challenge Benoit and Malenko, but they get quickly dominated. Sabu nails a bunch of guys with a plancha since he hadn’t met his quota for planchas. 911 ends up getting involved and he chokeslams referee John “Pee Wee” Moore. This is the type of match that’s great for TV, when you just want to pack a lot of action into a small time frame. For rewatchibility’s sake, however, you wish it was a lot longer. ***

Cage Match: Tag Team Champions The Ganstas vs. The Eliminators (8/24/96)

The match starts outside as everyone brawls into the crowd. It’s just out of control for a while. The Eliminators take the upper hand as everyone gathers near the entranceway, and Saturn planchas off the cage! The Gangstas take back the advantage as Mustafa pummels Kronus inside. New Jack climbs over the cage, but Saturn trips him up on the way down into the ring. Saturn then leaps off the top of the cage again, this time drilling New Jack with a clothesline. A long, slow brawl ensues. SATURNBOMB on Mustafa sets up a THIRD leap off the cage for a frog splash! Despite Saturn’s heroics, the Gangstas take over again with a bunch of weapons. Everybody’s bleeding. Second rope splash by Mustafa gets two on Kronus. Saturn goes on top of the cage (fourth time) and delivers a frog splash on New Jack! He climbs the cage YET AGAIN, but this time New Jack throws a small trash can at him as he plummets to the mat. Mustafa delivers a nice standing dropkick on Saturn for two. New Jack is handed a computer keyboard from the Executioner, who’s hanging on the outside of the cage. He comes off the top rope with the keyboard, but Saturn dropkicks him in mid-air for 1-2-NO! Mustafa makes the save. Mustafa destroys the trash can over Kronus’ head, then takes over on Saturn and hits a butterfly suplex for two. New Jack continues to cut Kronus open, even as his face is soaked in blood. The Executioner climbs up to hand New Jack a guitar, but instead he breaks it over New Jack’s head! Wha? He takes off his mask and it’s Shane Douglas! This allows for another frog splash from the cage by Saturn (#6). He tries another cage dive (#7) at Mustafa, but New Jack throws the trash can at him again. The Eliminators try to set up another Saturn cage drive (#8), but this time the trash can hits him before he can take off, so he falls outside onto a table!!! That is hardcore, my friends. Inside, Kronus becomes a punching bag. Standing powerslam by Mustafa. Flying chair drop by New Jack. It’s over, 1-2-3. (15:03) This is as ragged, disjointed, nonsensical, and psychology-devoid as they come, but all those spots have gotta count for something. **3/4

2/3 Falls Double Dog Collar Match: The Pitbulls vs. Tag Team Champions Raven and Stevie Richards (w/ Beulah McGillicutty) (Gangsta’s Paradise – 9/16/95)

OK, here’s what you need to know going into this match: Raven, as usual, is playing the part of the manipulative cheater who has repeatedly avoided being beat cleanly by Tommy Dreamer. Raven lost to Dreamer several times in tag matches, but the finish was always something other than Dreamer pinning Raven. And according to the storylines, Dreamer has NEVER pinned Raven (although he did actually pin him on two house shows very early in the feud, but don’t mind that). Also, in a more-or-less unrelated angle, 911 has been on a rampage to chokeslam everyone he can get his hands on. He has been trying to get at Bill Alfonso (at this time a heel referee), but Fonzie has always gotten away, often with the protection of Big Dick Dudley, and he went so far as to ban the chokeslam! So, as of this event, the chokeslam is banned. Oh, yeah, an added stipulation is that if the Pitbulls lose, they must break up. You got all that?

First fall: Everyone’s in the ring except Richards, so Beulah gets on the mic to explain that he’s “injured,” that Raven will have to defend the belts by himself, and asks referee John Finnegan to make it 2/3 falls. Nobody has a problem with that, so here we go. Pitbull 2 and Raven are connected by a long chain. Raven gets pulled in for an inverted atomic drop and some stomps, then he’s sent to the floor, and Pitbull 2 pulls him from inside the ring and chokes him till he’s woozy. Meanwhile, Pitbull 1 takes off to the locker room to find Richards. He emerges with Richards already bleeding and connected to the dog collar, and beats him down in the entranceway. Pitbull 2 brings a table in the ring, but Raven fights back and delivers a PILEDRIVER THROUGH THE TABLE!!! Raven covers, 1-2-3. Raven and Richards are up 1-0 at 2:10.

Second fall: We come back from commercial break, and Pitbull 1 is all over Stevie, who’s bleeding profusely, and tosses him in the ring. Raven drives a chained fist to Pitbull 2’s face, and he and Richards hit Pitbull 1 with a double DDT. Raven covers, but it’s broken up. Pitbull 2 is also bleeding now as Raven sends him to the floor, but he yanks Raven around with the chain. Meanwhile, Richards hits Pitbull 1 with a STEVIEKICK for two. A second cover gets two, then Pitbull 1 fights back while Pitbull 2 brings another table in the ring. Raven is out, so the Pitbulls double-team Richards, and Pitbull 2 delivers a SUPERBOMB THROUGH THE TABLE! 1-2-3, it’s tied up at 4:19.

Third fall: We watch quick replays from the first two falls, then the next thing we see is Pitbull 2 getting smashed by chair shots from Raven in the crowd. Pitbull 1 brawls with a bloody Stevie Richards and takes him into the first row, where Stevie scores a chair shot. Pitbull 2 sets up a third table in the ring while Stevie gets sent to the guardrail outside. Raven shoves Pitbull 2 into John Finnegan, so here come the Dudleys (Dances With Dudley and Dudley Dudley) for our first run-in. They beat down the Pitbulls and set them up for stereo superbombs from Raven and Richards. Pitbull 1 is also bleeding now, for those keeping score. The Pitbulls no-sell and each grabs two guys for a QUADRUPLE DDT! Then, to further prove their point, they hit both Dudleys with superbombs. Pitbull 1 keeps Raven and Richards down while Pitbull 2 brings in a fourth table. Raven gets set up for a superbomb, and in a wild spot, his lower back hits the side of the table and it doesn’t break! Ouch! The ref crawls over for the count, 1-2-NO! Pitbull 2 sets up two more tables on top of each other outside the ring, but that allows Raven time to sneak in a rag covered in ether, and he shoves it in Pitbull 2’s face. He sets him on the top table outside, and tries a leg drop from the second turnbuckle, which connects but doesn’t break any tables. This whole time Pitbull 1 delivers repeated right hands to Richards across the ring. Raven lays Pitbull 2 on the bottom table and jumps from the apron, this time crashing through to the floor.

Pitbull 1 sets up the table in the ring, and the cameras miss a short comeback for Richards. He climbs up top, but Pitbull 1 pulls on the chain and crotches him on the top rope. Pitbull 1 delivers a vertical suplex through the table for 1-2-NO! Raven makes the save, having taken the dog collar off Pitbull 2, who’s still outside in a heap of table pieces. Paramedics appear with a stretcher for Pitbull 2. Beulah hops in the ring to check on Raven, and here comes Francine (referred to here as “Stevie Richards’ ex-girlfriend”). She has a quick catfight with Beulah, but Raven stops it and gives her a DDT. As Pitbull 2 gets stretchered away, Tommy Dreamer appears all of a sudden and puts Raven’s loose dog collar around his neck. He goes wild on Raven and drops a knee in his crotch. Dreamer hits the DDT, cover, 1-2-3! New champions! Dreamer pinned Raven! Dreamer pinned Raven! Wait, umm, who won the title, the Pitbulls or Dreamer and Pitbull 1? Here comes heel referee Bill Alfonso to clear things up. He explains that Dreamer’s pin doesn’t count because he is not a legal participant. Apparently, you can’t win a title by covering someone during a run-in, not even in ECW. Imagine that. He says the match is over because the Pitbulls can’t continue. Big Dick Dudley, wearing a leg cast and leaning on a crutch, moves gingerly into the ring to give Fonzie some backup. Here comes commissioner Tod Gordon to say the match is back on, and he loses a quick shoving match with Fonzie. Out of nowhere, Big Dick chokeslams Dreamer! Hey, he can’t do that, that move is banned! Fonzie announces that he’s allowing the chokeslam for one night only, then taunts Dreamer about never pinning Raven. Did he say chokeslam? Here comes 911! Fonzie tries talking his way out, but no luck, and 911 FINALLY gives Fonzie a chokeslam! The crowd is going nuts! Pitbull 2 is back. Dreamer unhooks the chain, and he and Pitbull 1 get Raven ready for a superbomb, they perch Richards on top of Raven, and Pitbull 2 superbombs them both! Cover, 1-2-3! New champions! (19:36) This was ECW storytelling at its most intense and elaborate, and for that this match often gets called ECW’s greatest match, even though the actual action amounts to a hardcore brawl. Remember that this was 1995, when matches just flat out were never this wacky, and before “hardcore” became so overexposed. It’s no doubt a great match, and it’s still a lot of fun to watch years later. A must-see. ****1/2

Television Champion Shane Douglas (w/ Francine) vs. Pitbull 2 (w/ Pitbull 1) (8/3/96)

Pitbull 1 is wearing an elaborate neck brace, having suffered a cracked vertebrae a month prior by taking an armbreaker DDT from Douglas. He gives a heartfelt speech saying that his doctors told him never to wrestle again, but he will never leave wrestling, and he calls the fans the best fans in the world. After a long intro by Joel Gertner, Francine creates a distraction by getting in Pitbull 1’s face, allowing Shane to sneak-attack Pitbull 2. Shane stops a comeback with a low blow, but the Pitbull hits the brakes coming off the ropes and scores a vertical suplex. Hangman’s neckbreaker follows. The crowd chants “Break his neck!” Pitbull 2 responds to that by dropping Shane with an inverted tombstone! Shane gets a foot on the rope at two and a half. Pitbull grabs a neck lock, and eventually Shane pushes him off but gets planted with a DDT. They go to the floor, where Shane gets whipped hard into the guardrail. Pitbull 2 gets a pie from a guy in the crowd and nails Shane with it. Chair shot follows. The crowd is just loving this. Douglas finally comes back by crotching Pitbull on the rail and giving him a bunch of chair shots. He sends him from pillar to post, but Pitbull 2 punches his way out of a potential table spot. Pitbull fires back and takes it to the crowd, but Shane scores with a crutch and tries snapping Pitbull’s neck on the railing. Douglas’ back is filthy from laying on the floor, which kinda adds a nice touch. Back inside, Douglas gets caught coming off the top rope and he’s shoved into the corner for a pair of cross-corner whips, but Pitbull 2 falls outside after missing a spinning wheel kick. Douglas takes control with stomps inside while Pitbull 1 and Francine jaw back and forth outside. Douglas goes outside to add his two cents to the conversation, so Pitbull 2 tries a sneak plancha but misses. Douglas sends him into the ring post, busting him wide open right in front of Pitbull 1! Awesome. Inside, a vertical suplex gets only a one count. What’s this? Pitbull’s getting stronger? Running back elbow gets another one count. Pitbull 2 gets fired up and begins to no-sell, but Francine slips Shane brass knuckles, and that gets 1-2-NO! Referee John “Pee Wee” Moore is getting completely abused by Francine and Douglas here. Shane takes a chain out of his boot and decks Pitbull for 1-2-NO! Hard chair shot gets 1-2-NO! A sickening piledriver gets 1-2-NO! Pitbull 2 PITBULLS UP and comes back with a press slam for 1-2-NO! A second press slam gets another 1-2-NO! Shane rakes the eyes to avoid a third press slam, but he ends up getting beat down into the corner. Francine slips the chain to Douglas, and he drives Pitbull 2 back with repeated right hands. Pitbull wants to go for a superbomb in the corner, but Douglas scores the BELLY-TO-BELLY SUPLEX! Pitbull gets right up, but his punch is blocked and a second BELLY-TO-BELLY SUPLEX finishes him off, 1-2-3. (15:37) Pitbull 2 is furious at Pee Wee, so he superbombs him, then superbombs Gertner. This match has heat like you wouldn’t believe and the psychology plays on that beautifully. The broken neck angle crossed the line of kayfabe with the fans, who sided firmly with Pitbull 1 in a real-life sense. It’s not a technical classic or anything, but the intensity is through the roof. ****

Barbed Wire vs. Singapore Cane Match: ECW Champion The Sandman (w/ Woman) vs. Cactus Jack (7/1/96)

Cactus has his fist wrapped in barbed wire and Sandman has a cane. Woman and Sandman play mind games with Cactus to start, Woman nails him with a beer can, and Sandman takes over with the cane. Sandman tosses him outside and delivers an awesome cane shot tope! It’s all Sandman here. Back inside, Cactus ducks the cane and kicks his way back into the match, then scores a DOUBLE ARM DDT. Sandman eats a few cane shots and stumbles to the floor for more of the cane. Chair shot follows. Back inside, Sandman uses the chair as a shield against a barbed wire punch, then unloads on Cactus. More caning ensues. Sandman lands a DDT on the chair, but he hurts himself in the process. Nevertheless, he stays in control with a body slam and a slingshot leg drop for two. A body slam onto the chair sets up a flying leg drop for another two. Sandman drops a vicious piledriver on the chair, but instead of trying to get a pin he wraps himself in some barbed wire that Woman brought from the back. He wraps himself in it and gives Cactus a corner splash, then a frog splash. He tries unwrapping the barbed wire but it’s not coming loose, and he ends up getting backdropped to the floor, where Cactus delivers a chair drop off the apron. Back in, Cactus pulls Sandman’s shirt and barbed wire over his head and gives him a chair-assisted leg drop! That only gets two. Sandman tries using the chair as a shield a second time, but Jack wises up and puts the boots to him. Nice piece of continuity there with Cactus recognizing the counter from earlier in the match. Sandman staggers around as Cactus gives him some wired right hands, and he falls down for 1-2-NO! As Cactus tries choking him out, Woman attacks from behind with the cane, so Cactus tosses her to the mat HARD. Desperation sets in for Sandman and he manages to knock Cactus into the corner, bumping referee Jim Mollineaux in the process. Everybody’s down. Here comes Shane Douglas to turn the ending into shambles, on his last night before jumping to WWF. He gives Mollineaux an elbow drop just to make sure he’s bumped for sure, then KOs Sandman with a piledriver. Then he simply butt-ends Cactus with the cane, which somehow lays him out as Sandman makes a cover and Mollineaux makes a snail’s pace 1-2-3. What? Was that a magical cane shot or something? (13:06) Tod Gordon comes out to give Douglas an earful. Douglas says Gordon should beg him to stay in ECW, so Tod plays along for a moment and gets on his knees, but then tells Douglas he’s fired! Douglas doesn’t appreciate that and promptly beats the hell out of him. Then here comes 911 to give Douglas a chokeslam. Not a bad match. It has more going for it than the usual weaponsfest, but seemed too slow for what it was. **3/4

Stretcher Match: Rob Van Dam vs. Sabu (8/3/96)

The match ends when one man is laid on the stretcher and wheeled backstage. They take it slow to start and both connect with a low dropkick. They trade forearm blows into the corner, and Van Dam hits a springboard leg drop. Sabu grabs a leg lock and won’t break the hold as RVD clutches the ropes. They’re still taking it slow here. Sabu takes over, corner whip, springboard leg lariat, right into a slingshot headbutt. He goes for a back body drop, but Van Dam counters with a double underhook gordbuster. Van Dam tries a slingshot from the apron but Sabu dropkicks him to the floor, then immediately hits a slingshot somersault plancha. He bridges the ring and the guardrail with a table, but Van Dam fires back and nails a guillotine leg drop off the guardrail. He gets drilled with a chair while hopping the rail, and Sabu takes control. Inside, Van Dam takes more chair punishment and is dazed in the corner. Sabu sets the chair up and tries a triple jump hurracanrana, but Van Dam crotches him on the rope, then blasts him with a side kick to the floor! He lays him under the ropes and places a chair on his head, setting up a guillotine leg drop off the top rope spot. That forces Sabu to take the first stretcher ride of the match, making it around one corner of the ring before he snaps into it. RVD keeps the advantage with a jumping side kick and a powerbomb. Springboard knee drop follows. Sabu avoids a back drop but botches the landing, and RVD hits a leg sweep and a backflip splash. He’s caught going upstairs, Sabu tries a superplex, but Van Dam counters and drops Sabu’s neck across the top rope. Van Dam tries a suplex from the apron, but that’s countered and he gets draped over the ropes. A dropkick dazes Van Dam, and Sabu lays him backwards across the second rope with his head resting on a chair, and he delivers a reckless flying leg drop! He rolls RVD onto the table and is all ready to go for a triple jump, but RVD quickly pops up for a springboard and … he completely botches it! Sabu looks dumbfounded! Hilarious! One of the funniest botches I’ve ever seen. Sabu has to settle for a leg drop, then delivers a sweet SOMERSAULT ATOMIC ARABIAN FACEBSTER. He follows up with much less sweet ATOMIC ARABIAN FACEBUSTER. Van Dam is laid out on the stretcher, but he gets on his feet halfway down the entranceway.

Back in, a clothesline by Sabu sets up a TRIPLE JUMP MOONSAULT, then he instinctively goes for pin. He takes Van Dam up to the top turnbuckle to try again for a triple jump hurracanrana, but Van Dam leaps out at him with a clothesline. Nice. Sabu actually gets up first, he lays Van Dam on the stretcher and hits him with an asai moonsault, smashing his own shins on the guardrail! OUCH!!! Van Dam is wheeled halfway down the entranceway, but Sabu ain’t done, so he drops a leg off the rail. Sabu whips RVD to the rail, but he misses with a chair and takes the VAN DAMINATOR. Van Dam follows up with a nice moonsault off the rail. They roll back inside, and Sabu heaves a chair at Van Dam’s head. Van Dam takes a cross-corner whip and Sabu finally scores with his triple jump hurracanrana, but halfway botches it. Van Dam ends up on the table that’s bridging the ring and the rail, Sabu triple jumps at him for possibly a DDT, but Van Dam catches him with a fisherman’s suplex through the table! Hot damn. Sabu takes a short stretcher ride after that. Back inside, Van Dam puts on a pretty bad display of chair offense for a while. Sabu reverses a corner whip and sets up for a springboard leg lariat, but Van Dam beats him to the punch with a springboard leg lariat of his own! The crowd was totally not expecting that spot. Van Dam wants a fisherman’s buster, but Sabu blocks and scores one of his own. He tries a triple jump flying forearm, but Van Dam holds up the chair and they both go down. An awkward spinning wheel kick by Van Dam ends up with Sabu on the stretcher. As Sabu gets wheeled to the entranceway, he becomes a target that’s too tempting for Van Dam to refuse. He tries a somersault senton plancha, but Sabu moves out of the way and Van Dam takes a rough landing on the stretcher. Sabu outsmarted Van Dam?! That’ll do it as Van Dam takes the stretcher ride through the curtain to end the match. (24:02) An awesome display of death-defying aerial maneuvers and never-before-seen reversal/counter spots, but it’s tarnished by more than a few awkward moments. Considering that this was 1996, you could argue that a lot the stuff in this match is not only innovative but straight-up revolutionary, so my rating gets a slight boost for that. ****

2/3 Falls: Rey Mysterio vs. Juventud Guererra (3/9/96)

First fall: Rey slips behind Juvi and takes him down for some kind of inverted Indian Deathlock, but Juvi gets out and wrenches on a leglock. Rey makes his way out of that and puts on an Indian Deathlock while bending back for a chinlck. I don’t know of a name of that move, so please enlighten me. They tie up again and Juvi scores a release Northern Lights for two. Out of nowhere, Rey puts Juvi on the top turnbuckle for a hurracanrana that gets two. Off the ropes, Rey tries hooking a sunset flip, but Juvi rolls out and covers for two. Juvi gets the best of a test of strength, bending Rey’s wrists down, but as they teeter up Rey takes him over with a monkey flip. With their hands still locked, they go up into another teeter-totter, and Juvi counters another monkey flip with a sloppy roll-up that ends up in the ropes. Rope running ensues until Rey scores a hurracanrana for two. More rope running ends with Rey getting a flying headscissors to send Juvi to the floor. Juvi moves away from a potential tope, but Rey lands on the apron, stuns Juvi with a kick, and delivers a compact springboard moonsault a la Arabian Press. Inside, Rey gets caught going upstairs, but he rolls around into a nice sunset flip for two. Juvi gets two with a brainbuster. Off the ropes, Juvi slides under Rey’s legs, and Rey turns around into a dropkick. Juvi charges and Rey tries to dump him, but Juvi lands on the apron and connects on a springboard somersault dropkick! The dragon suplex gets 1-2-3, and Juvi leads one fall to none at 5:36.

Second fall: Rey takes sip from some guy’s beer to get fired up, then runs the ropes like a madman, resulting in a shoulderblock that puts both men down, they kip up simultaneously, and Rey delivers a sweet Frankensteiner. Delayed cover gets two. Rey chops Juvi in the corner, Juvi reverses a corner whip, and Rey avoids an elevated bronco buster. Juvi ends up on the apron, so Rey takes off from the top rope with a flying hurracanrana to the floor. Referee John Finnegan wants to give Juvi a second to recover, so Rey leaps over Finnegan for a somersault senton tope! Inside, Rey lands a powerbomb for two. Springboard moonsault gets 1-2-NO! Rey’s onslaught comes to an end when Juvi counters a whip into a short-arm clothesline. Juvi peppers him with kicks, then tries a high flying springboard crossbody, but Rey dropkicks him in mid-air. Doctorbomb by Rey gets the 1-2-3 to tie it up at 9:08.

Third fall: Juvi charges right at Rey and hits a running dropkick. He perches Rey up top and hits him with another dropkick, dumping him to the floor. That sets up a low running dropkick through the ropes. He sends Rey into the first row and pulls back the guardrail, setting up a HUGE asai moonsault. Back in, Juvi delivers a springboard spinning wheel kick for 1-2-NO! Rey turns the tide by avoiding a springboard somersault leg drop. He takes Juvi upstairs, Juvi shoves him away and leaps for a flying hurracanrana, but Rey catches him for a powerbomb for 1-2-NO! Northern Lights suplex by Rey, but he doesn’t go for the pin. He springboards into a backflip, landing on his feet as Juvi gets out of the way, boot the stomach by Juvi, who then delivers a perfect press slam into a fallaway slam, 1-2-NO! Rope running ends with Rey hitting a spinning wheel kick. Juvi rolls to the floor, and Rey baseball slides into a headscissors takedown. Rey puts Juvi in the first row and gives him a chair shot, setting up a wicked springboard somersault senton! Anyone know if this is a record for aerial moves in a match yet? They brawl through the crowd and out the front door. Philadelphia is apparently cold in March because we can see everybody’s breath. Juvi powerbombs Rey onto the hood of a car, but Rey kicks him away and delivers a flying hurracanrana off the car! They come back into the building and to ringside, where Rey throws a chair at Juvi. He positions a table outside, then chases Juvi into the ring. Rey charges and Juvi vaults him onto the top turnbuckle, then grabs his arms for SPLASH MOUNTAIN, but no! Rey turns it into a hurracanrana! The crowd explodes! 1-2-3! (16:07) After the match, Rey takes Juvi onto the table outside and delivers a sitout powerbomb! With Juvi dazed in a pile of table pieces, Rey adds one more chair shot. That’s awesome, and so is this match. It’s just a little too light on psychology and pacing to be considered perfect, but I don’t know that it gets much better than this when it comes to two flyers putting on a show. ****1/2

Scaffold Match: Tommy Dreamer vs. Prime Time Brian Lee (10/26/96)

The ring is filled with several three-high stacks of tables to, uhh, cushion the blow when someone falls from the scaffolding. As Lee struts down the entranceway, Dreamer sneaks behind him for a trash can shot. He takes him around the bingo hall and jumps off a vending machine with another trash can shot, which Lee sells by calmly walking right by the camera and toward the entranceway. The next few minutes is just all kinds of brawling through the crowd. Dreamer’s got blood pouring down his face, and he takes a POWERSLAM ON THE FLOOR! Lee buys time to go climbing up to the scaffold, and Dreamer follows. The thing swings back and forth as Dreamer hits a low blow and a DDT. As they both try for chokeslams, Lee wraps a chord from the ceiling around Dreamer’s neck. Dreamer nearly gets thrown off, instead getting crotched on a wood support beam attached to the scaffolding! He fights back, and once the crowd starts making some noise, he nails Lee with right hands until Lee goes barreling through the tables and to the mat! It’s over. (8:49) For what it is, I have to say it’s really not bad. The concept of a scaffold match seems doomed for one-dimensionality, but they were creative with this and made it worth more than one big spot, and made the one big spot worth more. ***

Final Thoughts: A totally awesome compilation. There’s a little bit of everything, and all the matches that aren’t necessarily classics are indeed fun. While the “Best Of ECW” series features matches from all over ECW’s history, this one sticks to ‘95 and ‘96, which I think is pretty cool. The fact that there was this much variety to offer in just a two-year period shows why ECW rocked. Thumbs way up.

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:

Here is a link to the first time I ever heard the word Jinn. It is a wonderful scene in the 1940 movie Thief of Bagdad, starring Sabu as the thief, and Rex Ingram as the Jinni (which is usually anglicized as “genie.”)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I742bNHifm8&feature=related

Forward to about the 2:58 mark, as Sabu opens the bottle he finds on the beach, and listen as the Jinni materializes as smoke and says, “Two thousand years ago, King Solomon, master of the all the Jinn, imprisoned me in that bottle.”

Then buy Master of the Jinn to read my own interpretation of the many Jinn legends

Ya Haqq!

PS: There is actually a legend that in Biblical times, the King of Arabia begged King Solomon to help in controlling a wicked and powerful Jinni, an Ifrit, that was wreaking havoc within his kingdom. King Solomon came and by the power of his seal ring, given to him by God to control the Jinn, imprisoned the wicked Jinni in a bottle, or oil lamp in some versions.

HOLA QUERIDA

CARNAVALITO

PARTIR

AMORES PROHIBIDOS

TU ERES MALA

MICHELLE

Sabú llega a vender 50.000.
