Yesterday 4/30/2013

A court in Sacramento, California, has ruled to return the five month baby-boy to his parents – Anna and Alex Nikolaev, the Russian couple residing in Sacramento. On Tuesday, the baby boy will be brought to the medical center of the Stanford University for final diagnosis.

The social security agencies of California took the boy from the family claiming that his parents did not look after him properly. The boy’s mother Anna Nikolayeva is a US citizen. The boy’s father Alex Nikolayev has Russian citizenship. Their 5 months old Sammy has not been granted citizenship yet.

The family reunion became possible thanks to the prejudicial agreement signed between the family’s lawyers, judges and representatives of the Child Protective Service of California. This service agreed that the ruling on taking the boy from his parents could be withdrawn.

Such prejudicial agreements are usually signed if one of the parties of the conflict is not confident enough that they would be able to protect their position in court. In this case it was this Child Protective Service which happened to be this party. From the court’s building Sammy’s parents went directly to the hospital to see their son.

“We think this is our victory over an absolutely unfair decision”, Anna Nikolayeva says.

This strange story started on April 22. The family brought their kid for a routine flu checkup to Sutter Memorial clinic. The doctors unexpectedly claimed that the child needed urgent heart surgery. Sammy’s parents said they had known about his heart murmur since he was born, and the child was seeing a cardiologist every two weeks but no surgery had ever been discussed.

So the parents took the boy to a different clinic, Kaiser Permanente, for the second opinion which didn’t please Sutter Memorial cardiologists at all. Next day, the local Child Protective Service accompanied by police came to Nikolaev’s house and took the boy from his parents placing him in the care of Sutter Memorial.

The family’s lawyer Joe Weinberger said that the social service had made a huge mistake and after that it was trying to shift the blame on the boy’s parents who were not guilty at all.

But this is not the end. Under the prejudicial agreement the boy is to be brought to the medical center of Stanford University, which has one of the best child care clinics in the US.

Its doctors are to define the final diagnosis and to decide whether the child needs a heart surgery. The parents are not allowed to take the child from the hospital without doctors’ permission but they can stay with the boy during the whole period of the medical checkup.

When Sammy returns home the workers of the Child Protective Service will come to see him and check his condition for almost one month. On May 28, the Juvenile court is to hold a session on which the final decision about the end of the supervision is to be taken.

Nobody can deny the price-tag on a weekend outing in Sacramento has gone up exponentially, especiall

Nobody can deny the price-tag on a weekend outing in Sacramento has gone up exponentially, especially if you are planning on doing anything cultural or educational. A single trip to Sutter’s Fort will cost $16 for a family of four, on days when they aren’t doing anything special. That price goes up to $24 on days where they are running interpretative history events like the recent Traders’ Faire. A trip to the Sacramento Zoo for the same family of four is $37 and that does not include a ride on the train or carousel. What about the Crocker Art Museum or theCalifornia Museum? Both museums will charge about $30 for a family of four. We should probably mention that none of these prices include parking. How does this compare to a family night at the movies? For a family of four to see a 7pm movie, with a popcorn and drink to share, will cost anywhere between $40 and $70, depending on the theater, and the day you choose. So with these prices, how can a family of four afford to enjoy the above mentioned Sactown attractions, take weekend trips to visit other great NorCal museums and parks, and even go to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom on a regular basis, when daily admission is nearly $150, including parking?

THE ANSWER: MEMBERSHIPS & SEASON PASSES!

If you buy an annual pass to an institution affiliated with the North American Reciprocal Museums(NARM)program, you’ll be instantly eligible for free admission to more than 600 others in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Besides those perks, it is important to know the costs and benefits for people who want to enjoy California culture between Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay area? NARM memberships run between $100 and $160. So if you purchase said membership at, say, the California Museum for $100, you can get in free at the Crocker Art Museum, the Sacramento History Museum, and even California State Railroad Museum with free train rides in Sacramento. Your membership also covers the Walt Disney Family Museum, the De Young, and the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, as well as the Oakland Museum of California in Oakland. Say you’re driving through Napa; you can stop by the Shultz museum, and you’re admission is covered. This is only the tip of the iceberg. Check out NARM for more museum listings.

Pay once, make multiple visits — that’s quite a deal. And museums are just the beginning.

What about Zoo memberships?

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums also have reciprocal agreements. Depending on the institution, you’ll get free or discounted admissions. Because we wanted to be able to go to the zoo on our weekend trips we chose to by a membership and the San Francisco Zoo but the Oakland and Sacramento Zoos have a lot to offer as well. The Folsom Zoo is not a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums but they offer a lot for their size and price.

Buyer beware!!! Some restrictions may apply. For example, a specific level of membership may be required and special attractions may not be included. You membership may need to be a certain distance from the museum or zoo you are visiting to visit for free. It’s important to call ahead or check websites for specific rules.

Now for what you have all been waiting for: SEASON PASSES!!!! These prices are good until May 27th.

For 1 to 3 season passes to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, you will pay $66.99 per pass, plus parking. If you go up to four passes, you will pay $66.99 for gold passes which includes parking and other benefits like early entrance. Six Flags is great for all ages. It has rides for everyone and the shows are amazing. They are adding a cirque style show this year with dolphins. They also added the option for a meal pass this year. We only purchased two of the meal passes because the portions are quite large. The meal passes run from $69.99 to $79.99 depending on if you want to be able to use the pass through holiday in park. I feel the extra $10 is well worth it considering a single meal cost about $10 and the pass gives you two meals per day. The drive to Vallejo is little more than an hour if you live in the Sacramento Area.

California’s Great America is another option for people further south or west of Davis or families who don’t mind driving a bit further. The drive from the Sacramento Area can run anywhere between two and three hours depending on traffic. The waterpark and performance shows are a definite plus. The cost of a Regular Season pass to Great America is $59.99 for anyone over 48 inches tall and $39.99 for a Jr. Season pass. Parking costs $15 per car unless you opt for a Gold Pass which includes parking. The Gold Pass cost $87.00 for anyone over 48 inches tall, or $59.99 for a Jr. Pass. The Gold Pass option is only available until May 27th. The Broadway style music review, and ice skating shows make it well worth the price tag. The Peanuts Gang is a lot of fun for younger kids, and the thrill rides are great for teens and “tweens.” Riding the Flight Deck after dark is amazing! Boomerang Bay is a great waterpark, if the chilly bay breezes don’t discourage you. Great America definitely has a wider variety of rides for those looking to spend 12 hours in an amusement park.

Both parks offer payment plan options. Last year we opted for both passes. This year we will only be purchasing the pass to Six Flags, mostly because of the gas costs, tolls, and drive time. All told, we can go to Six Flags any weekend we want, and spend all day riding coasters, watching shows, and even sharing a pizza, nachos, and 2 cheeseburgers with fries and onion rings, all for the same price as staying in town and watching a movie. Like us sharing our secret? Want us to share more? Stay tuned to Cheap NorCal for more great tips on how to live more and spend less!

Since this is new for me hopefully I don’t bore too much. I guess I will first tell you a little bit about us. My name is Leia and I have 2 beautiful girls. My oldest is 4 years old and the newest addition to the family is 4 months.

How the idea was born…

The idea for the 30 Day Park Challenge was pretty much from my 4 year old. I recently added the 30 Day Squat Challenge to my workout routine and she always likes to workout with me so we are squatting away yesterday and she says, ‘I wish there was such a thing as a 30 day park challenge.’ I laughed and agreed. I asked her, ‘What would this 30 day park challenge be like?’ She responds, ‘Oh, it would be so much fun. We would go to the park everyday with no breaks!’

Hmmm, interesting. Challenge accepted! So my 4 year old and I sat down and figured out how we would go about this park challenge and agreed to start on it immediately.

So the 30 Day Park Challenge works like this…

We will visit a different and new park every day for 30 days straight. No days off in between. Each day must be a park we have never been to and we have to play on and explore everything. Then we will rate the park, deciding our favorite things about the park and maybe what our not so favorite things were. We will post our findings and pictures each day. The goal… by the end of the 30 days we plan to have a list of the most amazing and fun parks in our area.

I haven’t completely planned this whole thing out so, if anyone even reads this, feel free to recommend any parks for us to go check out or leave any comments or additional input about a park we post about. We will be exploring mostly the Elk Grove area and some Sacramento areas as well. I am not super organized so hopefully my blogging is not too confusing.

We started yesterday and I will post about that park later today. Also, keep in mind I didn’t get the idea to blog about this until after we completed Day 1 so the pictures and review may be a bit less detailed than future posts.

Let the fun begin!!!

This play was a Mommy/Daughter date with my 10 year old which almost didn’t happen. After much discussion that we should “Do this together,” “You will enjoy it,” “You need to be exposed to some culture,” and “I took your older sister when she was five and she enjoyed it,” I finally convinced my daughter Rachel to attend the opening night of, A Little Princess, a world premiere musical currently on stage at Sacramento Theatre Company.

Rachel had read the book, knew Sara Crewe’s father dies, and didn’t want to re-experience that tragedy, but, by the opening line of the play, she was hooked. It was funny and I heard her giggle as Ram Das introduces the story. When intermission came, Rachel told me with a big smile, “Mommy, I’m glad you made me come.”

The humor in the musical is at a level that will make you laugh whether you are a little girl or her date for the evening. It was well-spaced and kept Rachel’s attention for the entire play.

Tyler Wipfli as Mariette (center) and the Servant Ensemble in Sacramento Theatre Company’s “A Little Princess.” Photo by Kelly Christoffersen.

Alyssa Middleton was delightful as Sara Crewe, with a wonderful voice, but the two standouts for the evening were Devon Hayakawa as Ermengarde St. John and Michael De Souza as Ram Das. We looked forward to seeing them on stage and they both never failed to make us laugh or smile.

I have never read the book, but love the Shirley Temple movie version. Don’t go to expect the same story; the musical sticks closer to the book version. And, because of that, we learn that although someone is gone, it is their memory and teachings that carry us through life. As Sara’s neighbor, Tom Carrisford, says, “I don’t have the umbrella anymore, but I still have the gift,” reminding us that relationships are more important than worldly things.

A Little Princess continues through May 19 and tickets are available online or by calling the box office at (916) 443-6722.

A mother and father are incredibly grief-stricken following the abduction of their five-month-old son by police officers after merely requesting the child receive a second medical opinion.

Anna Nikolayev and her husband Alex took their son Sammy to the Sutter Memorial hospital in Sacramento to have his flu symptoms examined, but Anna became concerned with the care Sammy was receiving after a nurse failed to properly address why he was being given antibiotics.

“I asked her, for what is that? And she’s like, ‘I don’t know.’ I’m like, ‘you’re working as a nurse, and you don’t even know what to give to my baby for what,’” Anna told ABC affiliate News10. Anna later confirmed with a doctor that Sammy should not have been given antibiotics.

Since Sammy was born, he’s suffered from a heart murmur for which he had seen a specialist at the same hospital. Once Sammy underwent treatment for his flu symptoms, he was kept in the hospital’s pediatric ICU for monitoring, and after a few days doctors began recommending the couple allow them to perform heart surgery, which the couple refused.

“If we got the one mistake after another, I don’t want to have my baby have surgery in the hospital where I don’t feel safe,” Anna said.

Anna told doctors she would seek a second opinion and took her baby from the hospital without filing the proper discharge notice. “We went from one hospital to another. We just wanted to be safe, that he is in good hands,” Anna said, demonstrating an obvious effort to procure adequate medical attention.

Anna Nikolayev and her husband Alex with baby Sammy.

Police showed up at the Nikolayev’s house not once, but twice demanding they surrender their child. “They told us that Sutter was telling them so much bad stuff that they thought that this baby is dying on our arms,” Anna said.

During the first police encounter, Anna showed them Sammy was indeed healthy, and also volunteered a doctor’s note clearly stating there was no “concern for the safety of the child at home with his parents.”

That day police thanked her and left, only to return the following day.

Alex recalled to reporters the dramatic quarrel as police bullied their way inside his house, stating, “I was pushed against the building, smacked down. I said, ‘am I being placed under arrest?’ He smacked me down onto the ground, yelled out, ‘I think I got the keys to the house.’”

Anticipating a showdown, Anna had set a camera up in her home. In a live taping of the incident, one officer can be heard warning the family not to refuse, saying, “I’m going to grab your baby and don’t resist and don’t fight me, okay?”

According to News 10, Sutter Memorial Hospital has refused to comment on the incident, instead referring reporters to Child Protective Services and law enforcement. When reached for comment, CPS stated they “conduct a risk assessment of the child’s safety and rely heavily on the direction of health care providers.”

This is only one of the most recent and public embodiments of CPS working underhandedly in concert with so-called authorities and health practitioners to literally kidnap children from their parents.

The story goes a long way in depicting the collectivist mindset being promulgated and embraced by the left, the most recent example of which had MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry declaring all children belong to the “community,” in other words, to the state. “We have to break through our private idea that kids belong to their parents or kids belong to their families,” Harris-Perry recently stated in an awkward 30-second indoctrination piece aired during breaks on MSNBC.

The right to choose what’s best for your own child is a speck fading gradually in the rear view mirror, and as Sarah at the Healthy Home Economist correctly surmised, the day has come where walking through hospital doors means immediately surrendering your right to dictate what’s best medically for your child.

Our church’s private school got sued for something when I was in elementary school. It was a big deal for the adults. It was a big deal for us Christian homeschooled kids too, because our families drove in a mini-van caravan from Redding down to the California State Supreme Court in Sacramento, where the trial was being held. We home-schoolers got to miss “school” and see the trial. I think it was supposed to be educational somehow.

I don’t remember anything about the trial other than the fact that we were supposed to be quiet in the courtroom and look serious. It was hard not to laugh in such a solemn environment though. I think that was why our parents let us hang out outside the courtroom for a while during one of the sessions; they must have gotten tired of shushing us. Some of the older kids, like Ben, and Blair, and my brother were doing funny stuff but trying to be quiet so the security guards wouldn’t come over and yell at us.

I don’t know who it was that did it first, but some of the older kids started riding the escalator from the first floor of the building to the second floor, where our courtroom was, sitting on the metal steps of the escalator rather than standing up. We all thought it was cool. It was just so casual and chill to ride an escalator like that because, “hey dude, I’m just sitting and relaxing on this escalator instead of standing.”

Jon, my best friend (I had two best friends: John and Jon), had a big grin on his face when he sat down on an escalator step and waved at me, just like he’d seen his brother, Ben, and the big kids do it. He had this huge grin on his face as the escalator carried him higher and higher toward the second floor. He grinned all the way until his butt cheek got pinched between the metal step he was sitting on and the point where the step goes back into the machine. Then he just looked shocked and angry for a split second and screamed, “AAAHH! OWW!” really loudly.

Then he jumped up and started rubbing his butt furiously like it was on fire. A second later his dad came rushing out of the courtroom, grabbed Jon’s arm and dragged him into the bathroom, where we could hear his dad spanking him.

From out in the hall, it sounded something like *Smack* “AAAAHH! OWW!” *Smack* “AAAAHH! OWW!” and so on.

After a couple of minutes, they came out and his dad pulled him into the courtroom with him.

Getting pinched and spanked on the same spot on the same day and then having to sit in a courtroom for the rest of the afternoon had to suck. It changed everyone else’s mood too.

We all kept riding the escalator sitting down because it was still pretty cool, but we weren’t as joyful about it.

Last week I went to Sacramento to speak on SB 441 and the importance of getting it passed. (My experience was shared in a Letter to the Editor see: Surprised in Sacramento.) While in Sacramento, I posted on fb that I wished my students could come to Sacramento and let their voices be heard.

My wish has come true.

Myself, along with Christina, Jessica, Nina & Zoie, are storming the capitol on Wednesday. OK, storming might be a strong word, but we are on a mission to have our voices heard. We are also hoping to hear where Senator Marty Block stands on the issue (he left both hearings last week and never voted). Since we are just 1 vote away from getting the bill through we are calling on all our senators to vote YES on SB 441.

Excited to experience Sacramento with these amazing students…and I can’t wait for the senators to hear what they have to say!

Hundreds of students at schools soon to close in the Sacramento City Unified School District have pushed for transfers to nearby schools rather than pursue the most sought- after campuses in the district, open enrollment data show.

And most students, regardless of whether they were affected by school closure, were successful in getting their first or second choice through open enrollment, district officials say.

Spokesman Gabe Ross said the district will mail letters to families on Monday notifying them of student placements. Registration at new schools is scheduled for May 13 to 24.

Anna Nikolayev, 5-month-old Sammy and Alex Nikolayev

SACRAMENTO, CA – A Sacramento family was torn apart after a 5-month-old baby boy was taken from his parents following a visit to the doctor.

The young couple thought their problems were behind them after their son had a scare at the hospital, but once they got home their problems got even worse.

It all began nearly two weeks ago, when Anna Nikolayev and her husband Alex took their 5-month-old boy Sammy to Sutter Memorial Hospital to be treated for flu symptoms, but they didn’t like the care Sammy was getting.

UPDATE: Couple still unclear why CPS took their baby

For example, one day Anna asked why a nurse was giving her son antibiotics.

“I asked her, for what is that? And she’s like, ‘I don’t know.’ I’m like, ‘you’re working as a nurse, and you don’t even know what to give to my baby for what,’” Anna explained.

According to Anna, a doctor later said Sammy shouldn’t have been on the antibiotics.

Anna said Sammy suffers from a heart murmur and had been seeing a doctor at Sutter for regular treatment since he was born. After Sammy was treated for flu symptoms last week, doctors at Sutter admitted him to the pediatric ICU to monitor his condition. After a few days, Anna said doctors began talking about heart surgery.

FACEBOOK: Fans talk about the family’s story

“If we got the one mistake after another, I don’t want to have my baby have surgery in the hospital where I don’t feel safe,” Anna said.

Anna argued with doctors about getting a second opinion. Without a proper discharge, she finally took Sammy out of the hospital to get a second opinion at Kaiser Permanente.

“The police showed up there. They saw that the baby was fine,” Anna said. “They told us that Sutter was telling them so much bad stuff that they thought that this baby is dying on our arms.”

Medical records from the doctor treating Sammy at Kaiser Permanente said the baby as clinically safe to go home with his parents. The doctor added, “I do not have concern for the safety of the child at home with his parents.”

“So police saw the report from the doctors, said, ‘okay guys, you have a good day,’ and they walked away,” Anna said.

Anna said the next day police and child protective services showed up on her doorstep. Alex Nikolayev said he met them outside a short time after they arrived.

The principal of The Met High School has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into allegations of misconduct, a Sacramento City Unified School District spokesman said today.

District spokesman Gabe Ross confirmed that Principal Allen Young was placed on leave Wednesday afternoon. But Ross said he could not provide details of the allegations.

“We’re just beginning an investigation,” he said.

Quick: What are the three branches of the federal government?

California state workers who don’t know would learn the answers to those kinds of questions if Senate Bill 619 becomes law.

The measure by Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, would require the state Department of Education to develop an online civics curriculum for state employees by Jan. 1, 2015. Agencies would have to certify with the state’s human resources department each year that every employee hired, promoted or reclassified after July 1, 2015 has completed the orientation.
