Star Trek: The Next Generation began when I was twelve; always a sucker for fantasy and sci-fi, I remember watching it, and the spin-offs, avidly. Twenty-five years later, the writing can often feel heavy-handed and stiff (not to mention sometimes downright offensive), but I still enjoy the shows—and Sir Patrick Stewart’s acting chops (especially as compared to most of his cast mates, bless ‘em) as the fearless and capable Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

I’ve known for a few years now that Stewart identifies as a feminist, and that he has spoken out about issues of domestic violence, due in part to his own family history. I’ve written before about the role of men in ending domestic violence, and Stewart is an outstanding example of this. He is not just talking the talk, he is walking the walk. He uses his considerable celebrity in service to domestic violence organizations in his own country, and he doesn’t hold back when it comes to discussing the issues publicly whenever he can.

With this video, my sci-fi-world and my domestic-violence-movement-world collided, in the best way. At the Comicpalooza convention in May, an audience member commended him for his work on domestic violence and asked him what he was most proud of achieving, other than acting. In his response, he eloquently makes connections between his personal experiences, the need for safety for survivors of domestic violence, the role men must play in ending violence, and the lasting impacts of war and PTSD on soldiers. It’s well worth the seven minutes—if you’re anything like me, you may find there’s something in your eye, probably more than once. Sniff. And big kudos to the survivor who asked him the question and shared her story!

However, an estimated 111,000 kids younger than 18 are treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments for skateboard-related injuries each year. Many of these injuries can be prevented.

Skateboarding Injury Facts: Of those children treated in U.S. emergency departments because of their skateboard-related injuries:

The three most commonly injured body regions are the wrist, ankle and face.

Broken bones, sprains, scrapes and bruises are the most common injuries.

Who is Most at Risk?

Skateboarders who are hit by a motor vehicle have the most serious injuries.

Skateboarders who ride on uneven surfaces have the most fall-related injuries.

Skateboarding Safety Tips

All skateboarders should wear a helmet and other protective gear (such as wrist guards, elbow pads and knee pads).

Teach children to never ride a skateboard in or near traffic.

Check the skating area for holes, bumps and rocks. Smooth surfaces are the safest for skateboarding.

Skateboarding at dusk or after dark can be dangerous. It is safest to skateboard during the day.

Encourage children to ride their skateboard in skateboarding parks.

Children younger than 5 years should not use skateboards, and children 5-10 years should not use skateboards without adult supervision.

Make sure your child wears a helmet to stay legal and safe.

Children riding on ripsticks should follow the same safety tips as children on skateboards.

First, let’s start by thanking the 30 neighbors who showed up to discuss ideas about the Tot Lot. It was such a great group of people with diverse thoughts on what the Tot Lot could become. There were a few neighbors whose homes border the park and their perspectives were extremely important to the conversation. We also had representatives from Project Share, Friends Meeting House, & Carlisle Sunrise Rotary. The meeting started off with the announcement that someone who couldn’t attend was so excited to support the project, especially the aspects including growing food, that they have offered to donate $1000 to the project! After the meeting we also had an offer from a lawyer in case we need assistance setting up a non-profit to hold the funds raised for park improvements. We are humbled by the generosity that we have already seen from people, not just with monetary donations but also just showing up and giving us their time to share ideas.

Part of the reason the for the discussion about the park renovation comes from the factories being redeveloped in our NW neighborhood. There have been multiple meetings to discuss how those areas will be redeveloped and what our community will look like after it is completed. Part of those ideas include areas that aren’t related to retail development and it means that the community has to put forth a collective effort to make changes that we want to see here. Since some funds are available through the “Elm Street Planning Grant”, we have an opportunity to get this project started now and not have to wait to see what else will be developing on the old factory parcels.

Christopher J Brown from Derck & Edson Associates was able to attend the meeting and gather up all of our thoughts and ideas for the park so he can pull together an initial design and report back to us in 4-6 weeks.

The meeting started with some general comments about issues that need to be addressed with the current state of the park. Some of these were:

Homeless sleeping in park after shelters close

Increased lighting for safety

Hidden areas where police can’t see initially when pulling into the park

People are no longer using the park so there is an increase in crime

There used to be T-Ball games there but some people didn’t like the cars parking near their homes and after awhile the games ceased.

Chris mentioned that lighting can look very differently from the way the park currently is lit. Right now, there are just a few high, pole lights that end up shadowing people’s faces that are below. Lights can be installed along paths or in trees giving a softer light at eye level and making the park seem more inviting and safer. It would also keep from shining in homes as much as the high lights would. People discussed how sometimes they do call the police when they see unwanted activity in the park and it was reiterated that residents need to actively continue doing this to show that it is coming continually from multiple people. It was mentioned that there used to be an issue with people loitering at 2 West Penn on the benches but calls were made to the police and they started to cite them and it isn’t as big of a problem now.

From there our discussion turned to the possibilites for the park. Here is a list of some points discussed:

Keeping some of the green lawn for sports. It seems like keeping it green and not necessarily upgrading the baseball diamond would allow for the space to be used more easily for multiple sports.

Creating a walking path around the edges of the park and having some edible landscaping interspersed throughout. This would give people a reason to fully use the space and limite the ‘dead’ spaces where the park is underused.

Adding more color to the park to invite more children

Playground equipment is one of the biggest expenses. One possibility is to use ‘natural playscape’ ideas that allow kids to use their imaginations to climb and play on more natural elements. It also would keep some costs down and expand options by using some reclaimed or recycled materials instead of buying all equipment from a company.

Creating seating throughout the park and incorporating planters into the benches to make edible landscaping accessible everywhere.

Parking was discussed for the 5 houses that are along the entrance from West St. The thought was to create 5 designated spots for the homes and create more structure for the rest of the parking area so more spaces could be defined.

After discussing some issues with people loitering in the pavilion, the idea came up to move the pavilion to a more central location in the park. It could then possibly be used as a place where performances could be staged.

Could there be different, more flexible, seating in the pavilion other than the picnic benches? They are great to eat at but not great if you wanted to have a meeting there or have everyone face the same direction

The idea of creating a small neighborhood park association was brought up so neighbors would have some sense of ownership of the park. These would be the people most likely to be near the park and watch over it. Some simple maintenance could be addressed by them or issues could be isolated so the neighborhood org could ask for volunteers to help assist with a project if needed.

Maintenance of the park would have to be distributed between Parks and Rec and the neighborhood. Parks and Rec currently mow the lawn and empty trash/mulch. The Downtown Neighborhood Connection coordinates bi-annual cleanups so one area of focus would turn to the park. Beginning and end of season clean up/prep could be done. This would enlist volunteers from the neighborhood.

If edible landscaping & fruit trees would be planted, there we have to be better documentation posted letting people know not only what is there but what is ready for harvest.

The edible landscaping could be a focus for monthly park potlucks for the neighborhood. Encourage people come out and pick food and eat with the community. Could have a bigger harvest event in the fall.

No trees should be planted near the privately owned solar panels

It was encouraged to upgrade the decaying grills. An idea was raised to instead install a larger fireplace that could be used for grilling or to make better use of the park in the colder months. Kids could be playing in the playground while parents enjoy a warmer shelter.

Some projects in the park could be worked on completed by Carlisle groups that have related skills. Ideas: vo-tech school could have masonry students build the fireplace if materials are provided, eagle scouts could have adopt a project with in the park to complete, Penn State Master Gardeners (or similar group) could donate edible landscaping plants/trees/shrubs

Having a to day to get some things built for the park and inviting the community to come out and help work on it (not unlike an amish barn raising).

Should the park be renamed from a Tot Lot to something else? The equipment isn’t really for ‘tots’ so it might be misleading.

Installing a water fountain

Installing chess tables

Adding swings

Adding small green house canopies over some of the beds to allow for some growth during the winter months.

Adding one basketball hoop. This wouldn’t compete with what is at Memorial park but would give kids who want to shoot ball access to at least one hoop elsewhere.

Those are the main notes from the meeting. The meeting closed by going over what next steps will happen. Chris will return in 4-6 weeks with a design based on what he heard from everyone. If we are happy with that, we can then proceed to present it to the Parks and Rec board. Once Parks and Rec approve of this, we will have to take it in front of Carlisle Borough Council for final approval. It looks like we have a few thousand dollars most likely available through the Elm Street Grant but we will most likely need additional donations to get all of this accomplished. The next time we meet up we will have to discuss ideas about this. Part will be contacting organizations and businesses who could give donations but it will also come from individual donations. It is not only about money though, we will need people to donate their time to help build this park so we can’t stress that everyone can help to support this project not only in a monetary way.

We will be in touch once we hear back on the design. Please feel free to contact us if you want to voice any other opinions about what should be seen in the Park. carlislewestside@gmail.com.

To those who have long-haired cats or dogs and are considering shaving your pet’s coat for the summe

To those who have long-haired cats or dogs and are considering shaving your pet’s coat for the summer to help him “cool down”, DON’T DO IT! Although dogs and cats only have sweat glands on their footpads (hence why they can leave footprints all over a shiny wood floor if stressed out or overly excited), they have their own super-effective way to cool down. Cats lick their fur and paws, and when the saliva evaporates, it cools them down; dogs keep themselves cool by vaporizing large amounts of water from their lungs and airways when they pant, expelling body heat in the process.

Although they have a warm thick double coat, long-haired cats and dogs are actually kept COOL from this. The coat acts as insulation against the sun’s UV rays and its effects. It regulates the animal’s body temperature, so when it’s hot, it keeps the cool in, and when it’s cold, it keeps the warm in. Shaving your pet’s fur off is like removing the walls of your home and then wondering why it’s scorching hot even though the AC’s on or freezing cold even though the heat’s on.

The best way to keep your pet cool is to keep your pet’s coat mat-free, well-brushed, and clean. Dogs have almost no pigment in their skin to ward off harmful UV rays and are very prone to sunburn and skin cancer, so the best way to protect your dog is to save the longer walks for evenings, and consider applying pet-specific sun block to thinly covered areas, such as the bridge of your dog’s nose, the tips of his ears, and his belly. You can also use a FURminator (or an off brand brush that does the same thing) to keep tangles to a minimum, remove loose fur, and lighten the coat a little bit. Keeping the coat healthy is the first and easiest step to keeping your pet cool in the Summer heat!

If you feel that you HAVE to give your cat or dog a trim, try to leave at least two inches of fur to protect your pet from the elements. Be aware that once shaved, a double-coated pet’s coat will never grow back the same. It can end up patchy, discolored, thinner, and will shed even more than before! The rough top coat may never grow back as well, and your pet’s natural defenses from heat and cold will be gone for the rest of its life.

For dogs who want to play in the back yard, be sure to provide lots of shade, water, and breaks, even if your dog’s eager to keep playing; your dog probably doesn’t know what heat stroke is, but when it happens, you’re going to have a very big vet bill all because Fido wanted to play Frisbee for ten more minutes.

Hopefully this helps, and your pets keep cool in this Summer blaze. Remember that the moment you start to feel thirsty and gross, your pet may be too! Be sure to offer lots of water (and pee breaks) and keep that coat healthy and non-shaven!

HIGH SPF, BETTER SUNSCREEN RIGHT? NOT! MYTHS You may believe that higher the SPF factor on your suns

HIGH SPF, BETTER SUNSCREEN RIGHT? NOT!

MYTHS

You may believe that higher the SPF factor on your sunscreen, the longer you can stay out in the sun without a risk of sunburn.

SPF numbers like 100 or 150 can give users a false sense of security.

You may also believe that SPF 100 is twice as effective as SPF 50.

Since one in 4 sunscreen products are spray, you may believe that they are just as safe as regular sun lotion.

REALITY

Being out of sun’s harmful UV rays is important. In 2013 alone, per National Cancer Institute, more than 76,000 men and women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with melanoma and 9,480 are expected to die from the aggressive form of skin cancer. The disease, which is often linked to ultraviolet exposure, is usually curable when detected early.

The SPF number indicates the amount of sun exposure needed to cause sunburn on sunscreen-protected skin compared with unprotected skin.

For example, a SPF rating of 50 means it would take the person 50 times longer to burn wearing sunscreen than with exposed skin.
However high SPF numbers are just a gimmick.
Where an SPF 50 product might protect against 97 percent of sunburn-causing rays, an SPF 100 product might block 98.5 percent of those rays.

In 2011, FDA said that "labeling a product with a specific SPF value higher than 50 would be misleading to the consumer."

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

· Avoid sunscreens labeled with > 30 (higher) SPF factor. They have no significant benefits. Most people don’t need more than an SPF 30. They should reapply it every couple of hours.

· Avoid those labeled “waterproof”. You still need to reapply in a few hours to protect your skin.

· Use sunscreen in combination with hats, clothing and shade, which provide better protection against ultraviolet radiation.

· FDA is also reviewing spray-on sunscreen to look at whether the sprays can be harmful when inhaled. Don’t buy spray or powder. Use lotions instead.

· Avoid products that include oxybenzone (found in 80 percent of chemical sunscreens), which can penetrate the skin, cause allergic reactions, possibly disrupt hormones, and may have a link to a risk of endometriosis and low birth weights.

· Avoid retinyl palmitate, a form of anti-oxidant vitamin A that has been said to slow skin aging. It’s been found to possibly speed the development of skin tumors and lesions when applied to the skin in the presence of sunlight.

· Safer options block sun with low-risk ingredients such as zinc oxide, avobenzone or Mexoryl SX. Find a complete list of chemicals and their risks here.

I have to call a couple of people on their bullshit soon, and I am not looking forward to it.

I don’t know when I’ll have the strength or energy to do it in any kind of rational way, or if I’m just going to end up blowing up at each of them.

Someone is trying to take advantage of my current emotional state.

Someone has made me feel like I should be silent.

Someone is being wildly inconsistent in their behaviour toward me.

Someone makes me feel like I’m walking on eggshells.

Someone is trying to undermine my strength and resolve.

Someone thinks I haven’t noticed.

Someone is wrong.

For now, I’m letting it slide. Only because I don’t have the emotional reserves to really deal with it. But I will deal with it.

I will call them on their bullshit.

I really hate how I feel today, it’s so b****y irrational and unhelpful. I feel like a cornered tiger, a very angry and frightened tiger. Last week I was overwhelmed thinking about all I missed out on, and today I just want to be left alone.

I feel like it’s better that way, I’ve always been on my own, even in those times when I was surrounded by people. I mean, aren’t we all alone, when it comes to it, just alone?

People leave, they have their own lives, their own worries, no one is really there for you, not really, not unless it suits their own ends.

Right now feeling like I should just handle all this on my own, it feels like some kind of trick that there might be people out there willing to help, some kind of trap, the moment you trust it, maybe allow yourself to believe that it’s possible to get support, it will flip and you will be alone again and in worse shape than before.

The world is not a safe place, it’s just not!

Our weekend was pretty focused around the happenings in Turkey and the Chicago Turkish Festival. We

Our weekend was pretty focused around the happenings in Turkey and the Chicago Turkish Festival. We went to the festival on Saturday morning with Yohki and Armando. It was a good festival…they had a fashion show, Turkish dancers, and children’s dance group (super cute!), and whirling dervishes. They also had a number of tents with different gifts/souvenirs, activities, and informational material. They actually flew in some people from the city of Nevsehir and University of Nevsehir. I chatted for a few minutes with one of the women who flew in for the week with the group. Also, we spent some time watching a paper marbling demonstration (which is ironically called “Ebru” ) It was fascinating watching the artist create the paper artwork. He actually does the painting in a box full of water (? or some liquid). He adds color and uses a long tool to move the colors around to make the shapes. When he was done, he literally laid a piece of paper on the water and when he pulled it up the paint was on the paper and the water below had lost all the color and design. It was amazing! And of course, we had some Turkish food and stood in the Efe’s beer tent for a cool refreshment.

After we were done at the festival, it turned out my Turkish class was cancelled…so Seymen and I ran home to exercise Cesme at the beach and feed him before we were heading back to the Turkish Festival to join in the solidarity demonstration to support Turkey and the Occupy Turkey (Gezi/Istanbul) protesters in Turkey. As soon as we left the dog beach, it started torrential down pouring. We were running late to get to the meeting place on time (in front of NBC building in downtown Chicago)…we were trying to get some posters printed at office max for the demonstration, but it was taking too long so we ditched that effort mid-way and sprinted to the street to catch a cab downtown. Of course, it was raining with no cabs in sight. But after about 5-10 minutes we caught one and made it just in time before the march started.

That was my first experience participating in a demonstration. (It was Seymen’s first time as well). It was so moving! Wow! There were tons of people. The Chicago Tribune quoted about 150 people, but by the end of the two hour march, I think it was much more. We acquired more and more people as the march went on. It was pretty amazing being a part of that experience. And people in Chicago, who probably knew very little about what was going on (there was hardly any news coverage on CNN at least, by Saturday) were supportive and beeping their horns or cheering for us. The Chicago Police (in HUGE contrast to Turkish police) were AMAZING. The demonstration was not planned and there was no advanced notice given to the city or police. They joined the demonstration early on, maybe like 5 blocks from the starting point, and instead of disbanding the group, they actually cleared the roads, blocked traffic, and cheered us on while we completed the march…from the NBC Building to Millennium Park where we took pictures at the Bean, up to the ABC Building, and then up and down Michigan Ave. Like I said it lasted about 2 hours, and we walked through torrential pouring rain. It started in rain, and then ended in rain. But everyone was in high spirit to support Turkey, and as we walked the last leg of Michigan Ave, everyone become more animated and sang Turkish songs as well as chanted…(in English and Turkish). It was actually pretty amazing to watch Facebook all weekend because Solidarity demonstrations were happening all over the world. Seymen saw posts from his friends in other US cities participating.

Throughout the day I was so excited to have run into a number of my fellow classmates from my Turkish class last semester. I was able to introduce Seymen to them and we were laughing because it was ironic that at the Turkish festival and Solidarity Demonstration I knew more people than Seymen did, and he’s the Turkish one! That said, he’s starting to get interested in connecting with the Turkish community. My teacher has been telling Seymen about the TACA organization (through which I took the classes) and at the festival, Seymen introduced himself to one of the TACA booth representatives and offered his support for the group!

The most ironic run-in though was near the end of the evening. We were marching past Pioneer Court, which is where the Turkish festival was setup. As we walked by, Seymen said to me “I think that’s Yasemin’s sister!” I looked and indeed it was! We called her name a few times and she finally heard us! It was so random and ironic. She’s been living in Chicago for the past two years. She and her friend were just heading over to the Turkish Festival to check things out. We hadn’t heard that she had moved here, so we were all so excited to run into each other. We promised to meet up as soon as the march was over. We found her and her friend afterwards near Nordstroms. We spent some time walking around trying to find a place to eat (and getting dry shirts for Seymen and I since we were soaked and didn’t want to get sick). We finally settled on a place and spent the rest of evening (and night) with Nihal and her friend Alex. It was so much fun catching up and we are really excited to spend more time with Nihal. I’ve finally found a dance club partner and we are already planning a Turkish Raki night at Turquoise the (only good!) Turkish Restaurant in Chicago. (I was also showing off my new found Turkish skills, which Nihal was so excited for )

It stinks! It stings! Again? It's in my eyes! It exploded in the bag! What am I talking about?

It stinks! It stings! Again? It's in my eyes! It exploded in the bag! What am I talking about? Sunscreen! Ninjas hate the lotion because it has to be slathered on. They hate the spray cause it stings and gets in their eyes! Sure, it is frustrating, to say the least, to get our little ninjas to put on the stuff and then have to call them back to put on more 15 minutes later. But I'd rather hear the complaint now than have to deal with possible outcomes later. We've heard it for years, the importance of sunscreen and its even more serious now! So many people are out in the sun with no protection, they go to the tanning salons to bronze their skin, and for what? Sure, it looks good for a little while but is it really worth it? I am more concerned with these habits being inflicted on our ninjas. I hate to see the little ones with sun burnt cheeks and arms. It's painful!

Dangers of the Sun

It gives us our vitamin D so in that aspect the sun is good for us. Too much sun, on the other hand, is dangerous. The sun produces two types of rays that penetrate our skin, UVA and UVB. Both are equally bad for the layers of our skin and can cause life long damage. Different types of skin cancer, discoloration, and texture of our skin is greatly influenced by the amount of time we spend in the sun.

Our ninjas skin is the smoothest it will ever be! I would love to have that skin again! Help them protect it! Be a good role model when it comes to skin care in the sun.

Sunscreen Tips

-Apply sunscreen all year round. The sun doesn't just shine during the summer! Even during the winter months when the ninjas are outdoors in the snow or leaves…get some sunscreen on their faces!

-Get a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher and is labeled “broad spectrum”. This means that both UVA and UVB are blocked.

-Ninja's sunblock should contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They are less irritating to the skin.

-Make sure you are applying at least every two hours. If the ninjas are in the water apply even more often.

-Sunscreen does expire so make sure you get a new bottle every season to ensure maximum protection. Throw out the old bottles!

Other Tips

-Loose fit clothing should be worn and all skin exposed areas should be covered in sunscreen.

-Wear a hat and/or sunglasses to protect your eyes. The skin is very sensitive there.

-Become familiar with your ninjas skin. Although the odds of them getting skin cancer is low it is a good idea to know.

-If your ninja does get a sun burn, keep them as comfortable as possible. Cold compresses, aloe Vera, ibuprofen, cool baths, loose clothing can help relieve pain and swelling.

-If your ninja is younger than one and is suffering severe pain and has blisters contact your pediatrician. If they are older and have a 101 temp or higher contact your pediatrician.

-It is ideal to keep ninjas out of the sun until the burn has healed.

Here are a few good sunscreens for your little ninjas.

Neutrogena Wet Skin Kids is a great sunscreen for days at the pool. It is designed to stay on the skin even through jumps in the water.

Coppertone Water Babies Delicate Foaming Lotion is a fun one for the ninjas! The Coppertone line is great for young skin. The foam rubs in easy!

Sunbow Sunscreen is another fun one for the kids! The bottles have pictures of their favorite cartoon characters and the lotion comes out in fun colors!

I hope that this information has been useful!

Avoid areas where insects nest or congregate, such as stagnant pools of water, uncovered foods and gardens where flowers are in bloom.

Avoid dressing your child in clothing with bright colors or flowery prints.

To remove a visible stinger from skin, gently back it out by scraping it off horizontally with a credit card or your fingernail.

Combination sunscreen/insect repellent products should be avoided because sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours, but the insect repellent should not be reapplied.

Use insect repellents containing DEET when needed to prevent insect-related diseases. Ticks can transmit Lyme Disease, and mosquitoes can transmit West Nile Virus and other viruses.

The current AAP and CDC recommendation for children older than 2 months of age is to use 10% to 30% DEET. DEET should not be used on children younger than 2 months of age.

The effectiveness is similar for 10% to 30% DEET but the duration of effect varies. Ten percent DEET provides protection for about 2 hours, and 30% protects for about 5 hours. Choose the lowest concentration that will provide the required length of coverage.

The concentration of DEET varies significantly from product to product, so read the label of any product you purchase. Children should wash off repellents when they return indoors.

As an alternative to DEET, picaridin has become available in the U.S. in concentrations of 5% to10%.

It’s amazing how one intention can so quickly be turned into a totally different scenario. What started out promising to be a weekend celebrating our love for Turkey, at the Chicago Turkish Festival (funded by the Turkish Government), has suddenly taken a sharp turn to who knows where!! The same happened for citizens of Turkey, who since May 27th were (peacefully) protesting the planned demolishment of the last greenspace in Istanbul for some 97th mall and building complex in the city. Their protests were met with hoards of police officers squashing the protests with tear gas and water cannons. The protest has continued and spread throughout major cities in Turkey since then (and is still on going now as I type). This movement, which is now being referred to as Occupy Gezi (the park where this protest started) is being shared all over the facebook and twitter. In response, this morning (US time) Turkey has started withdrawing national broadcast, and service providers are blocking access to twitter and facebook. Seymen and I were having a big conversation about it last night, and I am seeing what the difference is between having freedom and speech and not. There are now supporting sit-in’s all over the world to show support for Turkey! They don’t have one planned in Chicago, but in support Seymen has made his website an informational piece about the situation:

We haven’t been able to get in touch with Seymen’s parents yet. The phone lines are either busy or they’ve had internet shut down…but we’ve been in touch with friends on Facebook that are in and around Turkey.

Fires are categorized as accidental, deliberate or unknown according to Communities and Local Government document Fire Statistics Great Britain 2010-2011 and those recorded as unknown are grouped together with accidental for all outputs. However the main cause of accidental dwelling fires; cited in this document, remained the misuse of equipment/appliances. An interesting topic for debate regarding statistics, reporting, forensic investigation and ‘electrical’, fault, activity and misreporting can be found in Fire Investigation – section 3 Electricity and Fire by John D.
Ben Franklin is credited with saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” He also stood in a lightning storm looking to capture electricity.

With severe thunderstorms and high winds in this weekend’s forecast, we at Consumers Energy want you to be safe and know we’re preparing for possible power outages as well.

Our crews are ready should the weather get rough. We’re staffing up our headquarters starting tonight and additional company and contractor crews are on standby to quickly respond to any power outages caused by the storms.

“As the spring storm season continues in Michigan, we’re committed to doing everything we can to deliver safe, reliable energy service to our customers when severe weather hits. A wide range of company, contract personnel and equipment have been mobilized to rapidly respond to any customer power outages,” said Michele Kirkland, Consumers Energy vice president of Energy Operations.

Some important tips to help prepare for a storm include:

Charge electronic devices such as cell phones and laptops, and have fresh batteries available for items such as flashlights and weather radios.

Have a three-day supply of water and non-perishable food available, and don’t forget a first aid kit or any prescription medication if needed.

During and after a storm, people are advised to stay at least 25 feet from any downed lines and assume that every line is “live” and dangerous. Residents are also reminded to not touch anything a power line may be touching, including trees, fences, other debris, and puddles.

Report any downed wires by calling 9-1-1 or Consumers Energy at 1-800-477-5050.

If flooding or another disaster should occur, check for the odor of natural gas before entering any area. If you think you smell this “rotten egg” odor, leave the area immediately and call 1-800-477-5050. Remember to replace any appliance submerged in water.

“Being prepared can help minimize the impact of a storm and can help you and your loved ones stay safe. That’s why it is so important to take time to make a plan to deal with severe weather during any season,” Kirkland added.

Customers who lose power should contact Consumers Energy at 1-800-477-5050 or online at http://www.ConsumersEnergy.com. Customers can report an outage, get outage information, including updated estimated restoration times, all on a detailed map available at http://www.ConsumersEnergy.com/outagemap. The map is accessible via both desktop computer and mobile devices.

It hasn’t yet spoilt the wonderful drive from Langholm on the B709 to Selkirk via Eskdalemuir and Ettrick Forest on the B7009, but for several miles heading out of Langholm towards the Samye Ling Tibetan Monastery, this road is peppered with potholes. If the controlling council have plans to repair the carriageway then I’m sure that motorists would welcome some indication by way of signage; however, in the mean time would it not be reasonable to suggest that strategically positioned signage indicating PROCEED WITH CAUTION – DAMAGED CARRIAGEWAY, or similar, would alert motorists to the hazard of potholes, some of which are deep enough to cause damage to vehicles or worse!

The risk to cyclists and motorcyclists is of particular concern as well as other road users when I recently witnessed abrupt emergency stops and cars swerving across the centreline of the road to avoid the potholes. I am sure that this is not the only road which requires immediate attention and personally believe that more must be done in the form of collision risk reduction and insurance claim mitigation. The other issue of course is that when these hole are full with rainwater, how do you know how deep they are?

Happy motoring.

Children who are too young to have a driver’s license should not be allowed to operate off-road vehicles. Children are involved in about 30 percent of all ATV-related deaths and emergency room-treated injuries.

Don’t ride double. Passengers are frequently injured when riding ATVs. Most ATVs are designed to carry only one person: the driver. Passengers can make ATVs unstable and difficult to control.

Because their nervous systems and judgment have not fully developed, off-road vehicles are particularly dangerous for children younger than 16 years.

All riders should wear helmets, eye protection, sturdy shoes (no flip-flops), and protective, reflective clothing. Appropriate helmets are those designed for motorcycle (not bicycle) use, and should include safety visors/face shields for eye protection. Wearing a helmet may prevent or reduce the severity of these injuries.

ATVs lack the common safety equipment found on all cars and trucks that are designed for street use. ATV tires are not designed to grip on pavement, so operators should not ride on paved roads. Parents should never permit nighttime riding or street use of off-road vehicles.

Flags, reflectors and lights should be used to make vehicles more visible.

Drivers of recreational vehicles should not drive while under the influence of alcohol, drugs or even some prescription medicines. Parents should set an example for their children in this regard.

Young drivers should be discouraged from on-road riding of any 2-wheeled motorized cycle, even when they are able to be licensed to do so, because they are inherently more dangerous than passenger cars.

While glancing over my morning paper, I saw a full page ad from the Consumers Union that really caug

While glancing over my morning paper, I saw a full page ad from the Consumers Union that really caught my attention.

Due to recent alarming Consumer Reports, the Consumers Union has established the ‘Meat Without Drugs’ campaign. You can get involved by reading more on the issue and signing their petition.

The Consumers Union is calling on national grocer, Trader Joe’s, to stop selling meat and poultry raised with antibiotics because it threatens public health. Animals raised on antibiotics can spread drug resistant “superbugs.”

Why are “superbugs” a threat?

“These organisms can cause foodborne illnesses and other infections. Worse, they spread antibiotic-resistance, which threatens to bring on a post-antibiotic era where important medicines critical to treating people could become ineffective.”

Why do farmers use antibiotics on livestock?

You may be surprised to hear 80% (and growing!) of all antibiotics sold in the US aren’t used on humans, but livestock. Antibiotics are used to make the animals grow faster and prevent disease from crowded/unsanitary conditions on factory farms.

The Consumers Union is looking to Trader Joe’s because they are one of the most progressive national grocers. Trader Joe’s has already said no to GMOs, artificial colors, and trans fats in their products.

Trader Joe’s was an industry leader by being the first to offer affordable organic foods and cage-free eggs. While they do offer some chicken, turkey, and beef raised without antibiotics, they continue to sell meat from animals raised on drugs.

They are already half way there, so consumers are looking to them to start a change among all grocers. You can help too by signing the petition and not purchasing meat raised on antibiotics. Also, educate your family and kids on why they shouldn’t put artificial products in their bodies.

I’ll leave you with this:

“We shouldn’t waste these critical medications to make animals grow faster or to prevent disease. Humans don’t take antibiotics to prevent disease and neither should healthy farm animals.”

Although it is not a new idea, few airlines have a policy of basing the airfare on the passenger’s weight and size.

Samoa airlines has implemented the policy and believe it will become the future for many other airlines as well.Smaller planes are more effected by the weight of luggage and passengers than the larger capacity jets; as is the case with Samoa’s fleet.

We have seen many changes over the last five years such as baggage and carry-on restrictions, beverage, meals, etc.

Time will determine if this becomes more common. How do you feel about it?
