Gate swings open in both directions.Gate will fit openings up to 39″ with one extension kit and 44″ with two extension kits (sold separately).Foot-pedal operated. You will receive either an arched or flat topped gate. This gate is not intended for use at the top of stairs. Adjustable pressure mounts don’t require screws and won’t mark up your walls. Able to fit in standard doorframes (29″ to 34″ wide), the all-metal safety gate is a pressure-mount device. Just twist the adjustable bolts at each of the four corners to get a proper, secure fit in your doorways. (If you have wider than standard doors, The First Years sells extension kits separately that can accommodate up to 44-inch wide openings.) It should be noted that this safety gate can be a little unsteady when used at the outer limits of its range, so you may want to consider an extension kit even if using in a standard doorway.

The convenient foot pedal is easy for adults, but difficult for children, to open. The pedal, knee plate, and hinges are designed so the gate can swing open from either direction. Even smarter is that the gate is purposely designed as easy-to-open for an adult, yet difficult for children. The gate’s vertical bars curb curious toddlers from trying to climb over, are spaced to help prevent painful accidents, and provide ample visibility through to the other side. Because of its simple “knee-knocker” mechanism, this Hands Free Gate can do exactly what the name implies: be opened without having to use your hands. Any parent occupied with little ones and all of their necessities will quickly recognize this as a huge benefit.

Rarely does a mom or dad make it through a day without thinking they could use an extra set of hands. So First Years designed the next best thing – a safety gate that doesn’t require any hands at all! But even though it’s simple for an adult to just press on the pedal and walk through, it’s too difficult for a baby. The gate fits all standard doorways 29″ to 34″ wide, and, with use of the Gate Extension Kit (sold separately) will also fit other openings up to 44″ wide. The pressure-mounted design won’t damage walls or doorways. An audible click lets you know the gate has locked.

It’s 5.16am. I hear the faint click of a door handle opening, the flick of the light switch and a little voice across the hall “Mummy! Hi!”. I peel open my eyes and reach to check the time. You’ve got to be freaking joking. I lay in silence, in hope he may turn the light off and go back to bed. False hope.

“It’s still night time, go back to bed.”

“No.” Awesome. I drag myself out of bed and take Mr.R by the hand. Maybe today will be the day he decides how nice it is to climb back into bed, shut his eyes and go back to sleep on his own until 7am? Don’t be ridiculous. I pick Mr.R up and pop him into his bed, shut the gate on his door and leave the room. I crawl back into bed next to an unconscious DH. “Lucky bastard” I think to myself. Mr.R is back at the gate chanting “mummy, mummy, mummy…” Trying a new sleep routine, I ignore him for 10 minutes. He gets louder and louder, shaking the gate and yelling. DH is now awake and about as happy about it as I am. He takes the second shift, gets up, puts him back into bed, shuts the gate and gets ready for work. As DH leaves, MR.R is back at the gate screaming. I shut my eyes and try to ignore him best I can. I hear a loud crash and an even louder scream and I jump to my feet to see Mr.R in the doorway holding the gate in his two little hands. The Hulk has actually lifted it off its hinges and, clearly unaware of his own strength, scared himself to death in the process. I take the gate from him and secure it back to the wall, plonk Mr.R back into his bed and turn off the light. I shut my bedroom door and climb back under the warmth of my doona as Mr.R shouts louder and louder. All of a sudden his cries go quiet and distant as if he is retreating back to bed. “Success!” I think to myself…not quite.

BANG! BANG! Something is hitting my door. I hear the pitter patter of little feet between the screams and another BANG! I open my door in time to see a book being hurled in my direction. “Are you serious??!!” I shout at him. Mr.R screams, turns back to his bookcase, retrieves another book and runs back throwing it toward my door. At this moment Miss.H wakes crying (it’s amazing it’s taken her this long) and I go into her room to soothe her. I re-wrap her little body up and pop her dummy in and she settles down. Easy baby. As I shut her door and dodge the books being hurled at my head I decide I do have a ‘favourite’ child (insert judgement here). I enter the room and take Mr.R by the hand and put him back into bed. Game on. He begins flailing his little body about like a fish out of water, kicking and screaming for the whole street to hear. I try to restrain him and calm him down. I cop an elbow to my cheekbone, a knee to my groin and a fist to my boob. Excruciating.

I leave the room, shut the gate, shut Miss.H’s door and my own and thrust a pillow over my head. Go to sleep, go to sleep. Wishful thinking. His screams hit a whole new decibel and, out of books to throw it seems, Mr.R starts flicking the bedroom light on and off and banging his head against his door. Miss.H wakes again. I go in to re-settle but don’t have as much luck this time and decide to give up and get her a bottle. I open Mr.R’s gate and he follows me into the kitchen to start the day.

Welcome to Tuesday.

Childproofing your kitchen is one of the most important things you can do when you have small childr

Childproofing your kitchen is one of the most important things you can do when you have small children at home. Making sure that everything is safe for them when they are inside the kitchen will prevent unwanted occurrences like cuts, burns, poisoning, choking, and even shocks.

Here are some simple ways you can childproof your kitchen:

Place detergents, cleaning products, and other toxic chemicals in a high cabinet to keep them out of your children’s reach. If possible, lock the cabinet as well, so you can be sure they will not open easily.

Avoid placing table cloths, placemats, or other dangling items on your table and countertops. Kids can easily pull them down, which means the contents of your table will fall on them.

Avoid placing chairs, stools, and other furniture that your children can easily climb near the stove or oven.

If you want to place rugs inside your kitchen, make sure to secure them safely to the floor to avoid slipping.

Install a safety gate to prevent your kids from accessing dangerous areas in the kitchen.

Knives and other sharp tools must be kept in a locked drawer or a high cabinet when not in use. Never leave them out unattended.

Unplug unused appliances and store them away.

Keep your fridge locked when breakable and dangerous items are inside, or place them on the highest shelf, so your kids cannot reach them.

Do not leave hot drinks or liquids in places that your kids can easily reach.

If you only need to use one range on your stove, use a rear one. If you need to use all of them, make sure that your pot handles are facing the wall.

Install child-safety latches on all low cabinets.

Consider a trash can that has a lid, so your garbage is not exposed. If you need to dispose of hazardous materials, take them outside as soon as possible.

Install self-closing outlet covers, so children cannot insert their fingers into the sockets.

Keep small items, such as coins, paperclips, and magnets, off of low surfaces in order to choking risks.

Do not let your appliance cords dangle.

Pots and pans are not toys. Always teach your kids that idea.

Switch to safer, organic cleaning products instead of using hazardous chemicals like bleach and ammonia.

Have a fire extinguisher on hand at all times. Store it near areas that are most prone to fire.

If possible, keep your kids away from your kitchen when you need to cook.

A couople of days ago, My son discovered the art of ” TAKAS” hehe, he goes out of our room when we are still asleep and next thing we know, he’s on his way to the stairs .

Just like yesterday (dec.4), he woke me up at like 7 a.m-ish? Anyway, I got up, gave him his toys and watched him play, As I was watching him I didn’t notice that I already fell asleep ( Bad momma ), he snuck out of the room until I heard a loud THUMP, I automatically got up and saw that he’s not in the room, I went out, and found him by the stairs. My heart was pounding, I got really nervous when I saw him.

I checked his body for any bruises or bukols. Luckily, I found none.

That’s why we need a safety gate.

We have a Houdini at our house! JB who’ll be two in June received her big girl bed last Septem

We have a Houdini at our house! JB who’ll be two in June received her big girl bed last September. The girl was making holes in the walls when banging and sliding her crib around the room, therefore we threw in the towel and bought her a twin bed – just like her big sister’s. Her big sister (A.K.A Gabster) had made the transition easily therefore we were longing for a similar experience.

JB figured out the very first night that she could possibly get out of her bed and her room and wander around the upstairs of our home. The Gabster alerted us to this when she screamed at 3 a.m. “Get this pest out of my bed”.

Fine, I told The Hubby, you are in charge. Find a way to retain JB contained between the hours of 10 p.m. and six a.m. If at all possible in her bed, but at the least in her own room. Before you propose simply just shutting her door, we did. We actually made use of one of those plastic child-proof doorknob covers. Small magician figured it out within days. Fortunately, The Hubby went up to the difficult task and got home with The First Years Hands-Free Gate.

The First Years Hands-Free Gate is sleek, white and simple to put in. It is also the 4th different type of gate to come into our house, and so i approached it with a little bit of skepticism. Other safety gates had failed before – precisely what might make this gate distinctive?

Ooooh – no hands! How cool! No more juggling a sleeping baby to open the gate. No maneuvering out of the way as the gate swings open. No need to get The Hubby make four trips to the home improvement center simply to get this gate installed and operating.

This gate, The First Years Hands-Free Gate is pressure mounted. This means you put the gate in the doorway exactly where you wish to use it and twist the ends till it is perfect and stuck! No hammer and nails, no electric power drill – on top of that – no holes in the wall. In fact, there’s a nut that twists to hold the small pressure pads in position. Lucky for us, included with the gate is the wrench/lock-fit gauge thing-a-ma-bobby you need to make it all happen. The pressure pads are fantastic. They keep the gate’s components from doing any damage to your walls. Ours (the pressure pads – not the walls) are white and are made of some kind of rubber. Potential clients have to note that tightening the nuts (there are 4) actually demand some upper body power. This gate will work best when a passing baby can’t even shake it, so tighten away with the thing-a-ma-bobby.

The First Years Hands-Free Gate will easily fit in any doorway that is 29″ to 34″ wide. Gleam 5″ extension accessible which could make this gate fit openings approximately 44″ wide. The maker states that users may have 1 extension on each side of The First Years Hands-Free Gate and it will still be secure. They don’t recommend exceeding this number for protection reasons. Thankfully we did not need an extension for JB’s small room entrance. Not surprisingly, the extension is sold separately and perhaps costs a lot so I was great without needing one.

Ok, so you’ve got it in. Now how does it perform?? Oh this really is so interesting. The good news is that even when your kids observe you opening the gate, they’ll NOT be able to do it. Why you ask yourself? Well, the First Years Hands-Free Gate is controlled with a FOOT PEDAL! You will find there’s gray 2.5 inch by 2.5 inch piece of plastic that the grownup who would like to open the gate steps on with one foot and “pow” the gate will open. The foot pedal is on either side of the gate, therefore the “opening adult” can operate the gate from other side. This did initially create an issue for us because we were using it in JB’s entrance and still wanted to be able to shut the door to her room. The foot pedal was keeping us from being able to close the door completely. Repositioning the gate one more inch away from the door improved this concern.

Two great options that come with the First Years Hands-Free Gate involve the fact that the gate swings open in both directions. From a mom with gates which are installed and can only swing one way, believe me, this is mostly a plus. The second is that the gate generate a loud “click” in order to inform you the gate has secured. I really like this, except during the night when I would like to be able to close the gate as silently as I possibly can. Never happens. And the tiny stinker swears the “click” woke her up.

The stated click also has to be rated a minus for that noise element. I want to be able to shut the opposing force within – without have them realize. Yet another negative point is that after 2 or 3 weeks of locking herself in her bedroom, JB Houdini still doesn’t get it. Both young ladies often close the gate behind them as they go into the room and then complain that they’re “locked in”. Duh – don’t close the gate. I don’t really mind, but at the very early morning when I am trying to get that last five minutes of rest, hearing “open the gate, open the gate” is completely bothersome.

Please bear in mind, just like any gate you could purchase for your home, unless the gate can be MOUNTED to the wall with hardware, Don’t use it at the top of a staircase. Again, the only kind of gate that’s suitable to be used at the top of the stairs is a gate that is PERMENENTLY Connected to the wall. This (and all other) pressure mounted gates (kinds that need no hardware) aren’t safe to EVER use at the top of the stairs.

You might want to look at First Years Hands-Free Gate and several other great baby safety gates at First Years Hands Free Gate blog.

On August 6, 2009 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Dorel Juvenile Group, announced a voluntary recall of Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gates.

No injuries have been reported, but it has been found that the hinges that hold the stair gate in place can break and pose a potential falling hazard to children if the gate is placed at the top of stairs. This product was also previously recalled in February 2009. If you have this Stairway Gate you should stop using it immediately and contact the company for a free repair kit.
Description: The recall involves the Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gate with model number 42111, which is printed on a sticker under the handle panel. The gates, which were manufactured before December 20, 2008, are white metal with a gray handle and a motion sensor nightlight that illuminates on approach. The manufacture date is located below the gate’s handle as a date wheel imprinted in the plastic; an arrow indicates the month, and the year is stamped inside the circle. The manufacture date is also printed on a sticker inside the battery door.
Consumer Contact: Consumers can call Dorel Juvenile Group toll-free at (866) 690-2540 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET; complete an online order form on the Dorel Juvenile Group Web site at http://www.djgusa.com/safety_notice/ to obtain their free repair kit; email the company at Smartlightgate@djgusa.com, or send a fax to (800) 207-8182. Consumers should not return the stair gates to retail stores.

Checklist for Child Safety Proofing your Home – Keeping your Active Baby or Toddler Safe! All

Checklist for Child Safety Proofing your Home – Keeping your Active Baby or Toddler Safe!

All babies begin crawling or become mobile according to their own time frame, but generally this happens between 6 and 10 months of age. Therefore, it is critical to prepare your house for this event to ensure your child’s safety!

Below is a Home Safety Checklist that will help you go room by room in your home and look for potential child safety hazards.

Edge & Corner Protection – Every room in the house should be checked for sharp edges and corners. These objects should be removed or covered with edge and corner cushions or bumpers. Coffee tables, end tables, and fireplace hearths are the typical items to consider. Other household items to check for sharp edges in your safety inspection are desks, entertainment centers, shelves, cabinets, window sills, stone or marble stairs, statues or other decoration pieces.

Stairway Protection – All stairways that your baby could potentially have access to should have stairway safety gates. According to the National SAFE KIDS Campaign (NSKC), Falls Fact Sheet, 2004, falls are the leading cause of unintentional injury for children. Children ages 14 and under account for one-third of all fall-related visits to hospital emergency rooms. Because falls are associated with a child’s curiosity and development of motor skills, babies and toddlers are at the greatest risk of fall-related death and injury. Children ages 5 and under accounted for nearly half of the fall related emergency room injuries cited above. Please do not let your child become one of these statistics. Research and install stairway safety gates. Also examine the slats in your stairways and banister to determine if a banister guard is needed.

Choking and Ingestion Hazards – Now that your child is or about to become mobile, check your home for small objects that could potentially be within your child’s reach such as small marbles or stones that are often used as decoration around candles or other coffee table center pieces. As part of normal development, babies learn by putting things in their mouth. Remove glass or other breakable/valuable objects. Set dog and cat food out of reach. Use extreme caution and do your research on chemicals if you have your home exterminated or use chemical products to clean (consider organic, non toxic products). Babies and toddlers crawl around on the floor and often but their hands and objects in their mouth. In most cases this also helps them build their immune system, but we have to do our part to keep them safe from serious injury. Check all floor level cabinets for cleaning products, medicine, makeup, alcohols, etc. and move them to a top cabinet or install safety latches or cabinet sliding locks.

Falling Furniture – Check your home for large items that could fall over and bolt them to the wall. Too many child injuries have occurred due to televisions, entertainment centers, and bookshelves falling over on children. Toddlers like to climb! Additional things to consider as potential falling hazards are computer monitors, large vases, plant stands, and dressers.

Kitchen Safety – As stated earlier ensure that cleaning/chemical products are in a locked cupboard or placed well out of reach. Consider installing a stove guard to prevent burns or a child playing with the knobs and turning the gas on. Move kitchen knife racks well out of reach. Toddlers enjoy helping out in the kitchen and it is important to their developmental growth and independence to do things for themselves, but standing on chairs and stools can also become a fall hazard. Consider investing in a step stool with side rails such as the Learning Tower Child Step Stool. Children should always be well monitored while standing on stools or chairs.

Electrical Hazards – All unused electrical outlets should have outlet plug covers and cords should be placed out of the way as much as possible. In bathrooms, never leave blow dryers or other electrical items plugged in and unattended near the sink or bath tub.

Windows & Shade Cords – For homes that are two stories or have high windows consider installing window guards if you frequently open your windows. This is especially important in a child’s room. Shade cords should be tied up and out of reach of children. For some reason these cords tend to attract children’s’ attention as a play item and can be extremely dangerous if the cord gets wrapped around them.

As well as child proofing your home, child safety gates are an ideal way to keep your child contained and safe. As a mother of two children, I know how quickly a child can crawl or run if you turn your back for a minute to attend to house hold chores. Give yourself that piece of mind knowing that your child is learning by exploring his world, but contained to safe areas of your home!

Picture a newlywed couple just four months after their blessed and beautiful wedding. Picture this same happy couple closing on their first house together in a peaceful town. Picture the couple finding out that they were going to have a baby at the same time they closed on the house. And finally, picture the couple with 2 and 3 year old nieces and nephews coming to visit their brand new house any day now.

Those pictures are what caused us to install a safety gate at the top of our stairs over 1.5 years ago, or 6 months before Kaylani would need one. Before now, we all had zero need for a safety gate, other than the 3 or 4 times our nieces and nephews came to stay with us. It came in handy to <s>lock the kids upstairs</s> prevent any of the kids from playing on the stairs, but when it came to Kaylani, it was just decoration for 9 months. Now, we’re glad we have it. Well, we were.

For the past 3 weeks, Kaylani has been mobile, and oddly enough, the hallway is the safest place for her to be. If we close the gate and all the bedroom doors, there’s not much trouble she can get herself into. All the outlets are covered, the air condition vents are untouchable, and the gate is immovable. No trouble to be had. And just to be clear, it’s not like we just put her in the hallway, shut the gates and doors, and leave her be. I’m just saying that it’s a fairly safe place to be were she to spend her time there.

Anyways, this morning, the three of us were hanging out in the hallway before Daddy had to leave for work. Kaylani was crawling all around, and Mommy was sitting on the floor getting climbed on every now and then. When it was time to go, Daddy opened the gate and sat on the top step. Kaylani, who clearly wanted to come give Daddy a big hug and a kiss before he left, starting crawling towards him. That’s when she got distracted by the gate. Turns out that swinging the gate into Daddy’s back and watching it bounce back towards and past her was much more fun.

This went on for about 5 minutes. Throw gate at Daddy, watch it bounce back, laugh, repeat (and listen to Mommy saying “gates are not a toy”). But then, things went bad. Kaylani, who was still in her full footy pajamas, tried to crawl towards the gate some more. She tried to go from sit to crawl, which she had already done 5 or 6 times to get closer to the gate or out of its way. But this time, she didn’t make it. This time, she got tripped up in her footy pajamas and fell. Onto the gate. Onto the little metal knob of the gate that goes into the latch to make it lock in place. Right on her eye. Her eye. Metal knob of gate. Ouch.

Of course she screamed right away. After we finally got her to calm down, we decided it wasn’t TOO bad. It wasn’t call the doctor and have them call social services bad. It was a little red, a little swollen, and upon closer inspection, a little scraped. Poor little baby. Damn footy pajamas. Stupid gate. Those 3 thoughts were what went through my head immediately. The next one was how injury prone babies/kids are. I mean, both Mommy and Daddy were RIGHT THERE (Daddy was closer) and we still couldn’t prevent her from getting hurt. Sure some may say that letting her play with the gate in the first place is probably the problem, but who can say no to a baby having so much fun!

Anyways, Kaylani’s alright. She still has a little scape above her eye (it wasn’t her actual eye thankfully) but she’s fine. No swelling, no bruising, no more crying (well other then her unusual fussiness today). She’s asleep for the night and hopefully for the rest of the night. Tomorrow morning we’ll get up and hopefully not do it all again. Stupid gate. From now on, you’re staying completely open or completely closed. Gate’s are not a toy, but you’ll notice that I never called it a “safety” gate because in my experience, that’s just not true.

So before you go out and buy yourself an all plastic safety gate, don’t forget to check out Dad-Blogs for the latest installment of Fatherhood Fridays!
All parents strive to keep their baby safe at all times and everywhere they go. Baby will spend most

All parents strive to keep their baby safe at all times and everywhere they go. Baby will spend most of her time at home and it is important to keep the following things in mind as you prepare your home for your child.

Electrical outlets are a hazard for your baby. Babies explore their worlds by using their fingers and electrical outlets are very tempting. You can buy outlet covers at most discount and hardware stores. Along with covering up the outlets, watch for electrical cords hanging down within baby’s reach. Baby can get tangled in the cords and injure or strangle him/herself, as well as pull an object down on him/herself. If your baby is in a walker, make sure all cords are out of reach of the baby as he/she reaches out from in the walker.

Other hazards for your baby are cleaners, home chemicals and medications. Make sure you keep all cleansers, chemicals, and prescription and non-prescription medications out of baby’s reach. Even with cupboard latches, it is always best to keep dangerous materials out of your child’s reach.

Windows with or without screens can be hazardous to a baby. If the baby is able to push on or lean against the screen or go near an open window, you will need to prevent baby from getting access to the window. It is not uncommon to hear on the news that a baby has fallen from a window and gotten seriously injured or killed by the fall.

Once your baby is crawling, open or unlatched doors are a danger to your baby. Little fingers can get pinched in doorways. Make sure you hook or latch the door or screen door high enough that the baby cannot unlatch it or somehow get the door open.

Know your pet and his temperament and. If you are not able to be in the same room as both your baby and pet, it is safest to keep your baby away from your pet.

If you have other children, make sure they know your “rules” about how to handle the baby, what is safe for the baby, and what is not safe. Being a big brother or sister carries with it a responsibility of keeping the baby safe and helping mother and father do so, and this responsibility usually lies with the parent(s)/caregiver if the sibling is quite young.

When anyone on the premises is using a vehicle or lawn tractor, make sure your baby is not in the path of these vehicles. The best protection is for the caregiver to know where the baby is located at all times and to protect him from all danger. Your baby should be placed somewhere the caregiver knows is safe such as a play yard or swing if you need to leave the room for a few moments. Accidents can happen quickly and can be severe.

Being a parent/caregiver for a baby is a huge responsibility; take your responsibility very seriously.

Banyak tu …

Tapi hari ni aku bukan nak citer atau promote pasal IKEA, aku nak citer pasal barang yang aku dah beli kat IKEA dan pendapat aku tentang barang2 ni.

1. Penghadang kanak-kanak

You can look but you cannot conquer it Abu Hurairah, not yet!

Harga penghadang ini dalam RM200 so memang agak mahal, tapi aku dah survey around and for brand lain pun harganya lebih kurang tu jer.

Hahaha …

Kerusi bayi Abu Hurairah

Harga kerusi ni lebih kurang RM50, and for me it is useful to have in the house. So tu je la barangan IKEA dalam rumah aku. ( yang aku nak citer la). Hopefully this guide will help those kat luar sana yang looking to buy benda2 yang aku tulis ni.
