Safi

Safi is the pottery capital of Morocco. This quiet coastal town has a diversified industry known for its sardines and seafood as well as its ceramics. While it is an industrial town don’t let that discourage you from visiting, it still boasts beautiful architecture, most of which are remnants of the Portuguese occupation including the old medina and Portuguese Citadel – or Kechla. There is also the potter’s quarter which is home to all of the potters’ workshop and is a popular destination for tourists.

The Potter’s Quarter

Despite Safi being an industrial town life goes on as it has for centuries for the potters in the old potter’s quarter. Safi boasts the oldest pottery kilns in Morocco and the potters there are famous for their plates and tagines with turquoise, white and cream-colored backgrounds and also for the famous green tiles that can be seen on roofs in all the major cities. All of their pieces are still made by hand and are a major source of income for the town of Safi. Row upon row of potters’ workshops can be found displaying their breathtaking works of art and tourists are welcome to watch the potters at work as they create their masterpieces.

Moroccan Pottery

Pottery and ceramics have always been produced and used in Morocco. In early Morocco unglazed earthen pots were used to store food and water and were key to survival. Glazed and painted ceramics however, were always made to be decorative and only sometimes useful. As imports of fine china became more common Moroccan pottery became more decorative which allowed for potters to create more elaborate designs on their pieces.

Pottery-making is truly an art form and Safi pottery is appreciated for its intricate paintings and beautiful colors and can be found in homes world-wide.

Not that is was a surprise. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention described the closed centres of Safi and Lyster barracks, as well as the tent city of Hal Far, as not in line with international laws on human rights. It is not something to brag about; that is why the Maltarightnow, the PN on-line portal, was mum on the subject, whereas others gave it front page prominence. It’s been quiet here tonight. What a relief! Lately, Adam has been coming over a lot. Now I really like Adam. He lived here for a while, and I still don’t understand why he doesn’t any more. His room was always so cozy, and the pile of blankets on his bed were fluffy and warm. Adam and I bonded. But no more! He keeps bringing this monster with him. I’m still not sure what it is, but it seems to like Alfred, so India really hates it. It’s big and black and generally terrifying. I think it could eat me. I’m surprised India hates it, though. He seems to like dark things. I suppose it’s because he can’t curl up on top of this thing. What really kills me is when they sneak it into the garage. Our litter box is out there, and it’s always shocking when I go through the little door to find myself face-to-face with the monster. Sure, there’s a little gate between us, but I’m not buying the idea that it couldn’t bust through that gate if it thought Nathan and Claire weren’t watching. They keep calling it Safi, so I assume that’s it’s name, but who would name a monster! Yikes!

When you’re trying out a perfume and you hear “Mmmm you smell good,” that’s a good sign. But when some one goes on to say, “Yum. Vanilla,” it’s not so good, because you are wearing Safi, and it doesn’t have drop of vanilla in it!

Safi is a marvelous perfume though. It starts out pretty and sweet with note of lychee, followed by the florals fresia and neroli. Later, the vetiver lingers.

I would describe the perfume as a little bit department store, a little bit overgrown tropical garden. It’s actually quite a simple scent, but very effective.

The creator, Nyakio Kamoche, uses her Kenyan roots as an inspiration for her perfumes. Safi means clean and fresh in Swahili. The brand is available at www.safifragrance.com, www.luckyscent.com or www.apothia.com.

CHERRY TYPHOON

Există în Bucureşti, aproape de Piaţa Unirii, o biserică drăguţă, ce poartă hramul Sfântului Mucenic Mina. Este renovată, arată foarte bine, vopsită în alb strălucitor, cu un ceas aurit la intrarea în curte, cu clopote “electronice” care primesc ora exactă prin satelit. Ce mai, o biserică ce ţine pasul cu vremurile noi!

Trec zilnic pe lângă această biserică şi am obervat că oamenii parcă se închină cu mai multă ardoare când trec prin dreptul ei. Avem biserici care poartă hramul Maicii Domnului, al Sfintei Treimi, al Sfinţilor Împăraţi Constantin şi Elena, dar totuşi, nu am observat atâta evlavie la credincioşi, ca în cazul Sfântului Mina. Am observat că mulţi şoferi agaţă în maşină, pe post de talisman, icoana sfântului şi de asmenea, multe persoane, în special funcţionarii de la circumscripţiile financiare sau trezorerii, îl ţin pe Sfântul Mina sub cristalul de pe birou.

M-am întrebat deseori, cărui fapt se datorează această mare popularitate de care se bucură Sfântul Mucenic Mina în rândul românilor creştin-ortodocşi? De ce se fac anual pelerinaje la biserica sfântului, care adună o mulţime de oameni înşiraţi în cozi kilometrice, ce şerpuiesc pe străzile din jurul lăcaşului sfânt? Le putem compara, chiar cu cele de la Patriarhie, când se aduc moaştele unui sfânt important al Bisericii Ortodoxe!

Răspunsul a venit recent, cu ocazia ultimului pelerinaj, desfăşurat de curând: Sfântul Mina este protectorul… hoţilor şi al păgubiţilor! Păi aşa, mai venim şi noi de-acasă frate! Cum să nu iubească românii un sfânt care protejează hoţii şi păgubiţii, când se ştie că la noi furtul, hoţia măruntă, găinăria, dar şi marile ţepe şi tunuri financiare sunt sport naţional?!! Nu am avut noi Caritas-ul, SAFI, FNI-ul, Afacerea Delphin, Gelsor şi multe, multe alte hoţii naţionale care au lăsat sute de mii de păgubiţi şi care au îmbogăţit câţiva şmecheri, care acum se cred mari magnaţi?

Totuşi, trebuie ştiut că Sfântul Mina ocroteşte doar pe acei hoţi, care se căiesc pentru faptele lor şi cer ajutorul său, pentru a se lecui de viciul hoţiei, să nu vă închipuiţi altceva!

Donderdagavond kon je voor de tweede maal luisteren naar “De Sessies” op De Hop (Studio Brussel). Waren van de partij: Vijvenveertig (Knesselare), Nasta & Niz (Dendermonde), Nag & Twan (Antwerpen) en Safi (Mechelen). Lefto kon er niet bij zijn en werd vervangen door J to the C, en het geheel werd aan elkaar gepraat door host Gus, samen met gastpresentator Mellow P. Je kan de uitzending nog de ganse week herbeluisteren op de StuBru website, en binnenkort ook downloaden.
