is a community leader in the Arizona Hip Hop, Art, and Social scene. Having been involved in promotions in Arizona since 1990, beginning at the Grind Night Club. Dumper began as an after-hours DJ and Mural artist there. For a few years Dumper did freelance graphics and logo work for such artists Vanilla Ice, Sugar Ray, Everlast, The Headquarters, Zulu Nation, Hip Step Massive, XIS, and many more from punk rock to hip hop.

Concentrating on his graphic and live painting Dumper hit the Music circuit hard performing and promoting at numerous events from Raves to Concerts in the mid to late 90’s.

In 2002 Dumper teamed up with Keith Nichols, Emerg McVay, Hyder, Catalyst and friends to start his new venture, The Blunt Club. For the past years the Blunt Club has been Arizona’s Hip Hop church, hosting nearly every local live painter, poet, mc, dj, fashion designer, and beyond, supporting the artistic community in a multidimensional format.  The Blunt Club has since been named one of the top “101 hot spots in the U.S” by Spin magazine, as well as AZ’s “Best Hip Hop Night 2003-2006″ by Phoenix New Times and 944 magazine.

In 2003 Dumper founded with Baron Gordon, the Alpha Monster Art Collective, consisting of over 20 members globally. The collective’s goals are to advance each artist, business wise and ethically, give back to the community.Currently Dumper and the Alpha Monster’s perform all over the USA traveling and doing gallery events, to hip hop shows & Festivals , every final Friday at Club 909, First Friday’s downtown at the UM Gallery , and every Thursday at the Blunt Club In Tempe AZ . In 2003 Dumper joined forces becoming a resident artist with the So Cal collective, theAbstract Workshop. In 2005, Dumperfoo has since become a resident artist traveling out to paint live once a month at Abstract Workshop’s major events.

i found this on my hard-drive with no date; using context clues i’ll say it’s from August of 2007. The conclusion is not very conclusive, but i think it’s interesting none-the-less. i deleted my myspace without saving the 50+ blogs i’d written documenting my life from 16 til 21. i wrote about crisis centers, close calls with police officers, lost boys, fist fights, and starting college. i lost all of that, but still have this:

i walked to the train today in the rain, no umbrella, and in the grocery bag i was carrying (paper and plastic) was a bong, a few DVDs, and some paperwork. I decided to start moving things home from my apartment at 1346 Chestnut Street. Well, my dorm room, really. Dorm-apartment you could say, which always threw people off. People from home would ask about my apartment, how they wanted to see it, how they wanted to come party. But little do they know it was just a dorm room with a kitchen and a bathroom. I could only sign in 3 guests at one time, alcohol was not permitted, and there was an RA if you were too rowdy. it wasn’t that free, really.

Det finns två sorters människor som lyssnar på hiphop i dag, riktiga hipphoppisar och backpackers. Hipphoppisars är ju då Original Gangsters, DAH LOL och så vidare, det finns rätt många hipphoppisar i världen. Det finns även tre saker de alla har gemensamt, om man vill generalisera (vilket jag vill, saker är roligare då):

1. De tycker om häftig hiphop, den som handlar om bitchez and gunz.

2. De tycker om kepzar och ztora kläder.

3. De tycker om att göra konstiga zymboler med nävarna.

Den som ser Arsenal-tröjan får fem poäng.

Personligen är jag lite av en mjäkig och pseudopretto backpacker, en hipphoppis som tycker om den lite ‘finare’ sorten av hiphop. Den som försöker distansera sig från den lite mer kommersiella och hårda och löjliga hiphop som är poppis idag. Man skulle kunna säga att backpackers är hiphop-världens svar på indiekids, vilket är en väldigt pricksäker observering. En stor del av demografin i båda läger (indiekids och backpackers då) består av hipsters med neonkläder och ett halvt gram hasch i bakfickan. Men! Det är ju inte den sortens backpacker jag vill informera om, naj naj naj, jag vill informera om den sorts backpacker jag själv är; jag vill prata om den lite mjäkiga och pseudopretentiösa backpackern, den som anser att det viktigaste när han lyssnar på hiphop är “introverta texter” och “självdistans” (vilket är ganska paradoxalt, men det får jag återkomma till).

Bra artister att lyssna på när man är en sån här backpacker är t ex Sage Francis, Buck 65 eller Aesop Rock. Killar som växte upp i medelklasshem och sen ville göra revolution och började hänga runt svarta killar och nästan bli svarta samtidigt som de fann en karriär i den här låtsasresan mot svarthet, killar som inte riktigt känner sig hemma med resten av hiphopvärlden men samtidigt älskar den bortom all sans och vett. Eller ja, jag vet inte. Jag hittar faktiskt bara på.

Framförallt Sage Francis är en häftig kille, han är till och den enda anledningen till att jag skrev de trehundra ord av strunt som befinner sig ovan denna något psykedeliska bild. Han är till och med häftig nog att namnge den period den här bloggen har gått in i nu, Personal Journals, mest för att det är en av de bästa skivorna någonsin.

För det finns något som är härligt uppfriskande med en rappare som vågar att vara introspektiv, vågar att visa svaghet, vågar att helt och hållet strunta i de konventioner som existerar i dagens hiphop. Varför ska han tala om hur jävla bra han är, när han vet att han egentligen är liksom alla andra en oerhört sorglig och mänsklig varelse? Den enda konvention han följer är den att han som rappare måste prata om sig själv, för “at the end of this record I’ll make sure y’all know who Sage Francis is”.

Det handlar om skadad kärlek, till sin syster, sin mor eller till något abstrakt koncept av den perfekta kvinnan. Han vet nog inte ens det själv.

Det hela må verka sådär oerhört äckligt överpretto, och ja, det kan det vara. Men det hela görs med en sån finess att det är omöjligt att inte baxna inför det. Framförallt när du hör en fantastisk saxofon i bakgrunden.

Och så tycker jag om saker som är lite för pretentiösa. Jag är trots allt en “pretentiös översittarjävel”, det har någon sagt. Jag tycker om att säga det.

at least that is the moniker providence has bestowed upon itself.  makes sense in some regards, with RISD and brown here, as well as very creative mobsters, crooked politicians (seriously, you think those jackasses in d.c. are corrupt?!?!), ways to eat clams & the throw away parts of pigs.  the thing about rhode island is that it’s so small that anyone from here is basically considered as being from providence.  which isn’t really a stretch, considering my being from maine and though growing up a half hour from bangor, that’s the only town anyone has heard of nearby so you just say “i’m from bangor”, and in a half hour (well, 30 miles – it typically takes 10 times as long to drive it if the road is full of people from rhode island!!!) you can practically be from any one spot to another in RI.  anyways, long story short, this music monday will be dedicated to some artists who are either from providence or thereabouts, or who got their career started here.  this was spurred on by all the hype with deer tick, who are turning out to be the fleet foxes of 2009.  apparently three things are necessary for indie rock hipster band of the year honors:  beards, westerny plaid shirts and animals in your bands name.   here’s deer tick on seattle radio doing “easy”.

now, the first band from providence i knew about was the amazing (royal) crowns.  i had the privilege of seeing them at the 1st & 2nd (and only 2) new england ska festivals and they were incredible.  frontman jason kendall is actually a videogame designer who is featured in the guitar hero games, and is a bit of a ‘local legend’.  long before people put down real instruments for plastic ones, the crowns were featured on aussie tv performing “do the devil” and “shivering in the corner”.

from one rockabilly band to another (it’s a bit of a thing in town) here’s sasquatch & the sick-a-billys.  i had a roomate who’d routinely go see these guys, and i haven’t had the chance, but this seems like it’d have been a fun show considering the heckling that takes place.  though, it might be staged. you tell me.

back when the “3rd wave” ska scene emerged, providence was represented by the agents, who are still around. i’m not sure what he says after “dance”, but here’s the song.

one of the bigger names to come from little rhody is tanya donelly, who is from newport, and alongside her sister started the critically acclaimed throwing muses.  donelly was also a founding member of the breeders and fronted belly, which she’d gone on to do when this video was recorded.  sadly sans tanya, here’s “shimmer”.

my favorite brother/sister 2 piece!  the bassist is my friend sarah’s boss, so you know she’s cool.  the two often change instruments and melt faces.  if they come anywhere near you, go (and ask for the “shock the monkey” cover).  great, great stuff.  here’s vulgarrity with “gone streakin’”.

wow.  that’s really all i could say the first time i heard lightning bolt.  crazy noise rock (a term they hate) with compositions that’d make sun ra weep, this duo got it’s start at RISD and has rained thunder down on all who’ve been in their presence.  here’s”dracula mountain”.

speaking of noise rock, arab on radar were one of the first providence based bands to blast eardrums with insane sound back in the mid-90’s on through 2002.  they even got this video on empty v.  wacky.  fun story, there used to be a club in town called babyhead, and when opening for marilyn manson apparently they were chased out by angry pseudo-goth kids.  haha.  here’s “god is dad”.

arab on radar’s guitarist stephen mattos would go to form athletic automaton with one of the greatest barkeeps in all of the town, patrick crump, who we’re blessed to have had relocate from kansas city to here.  here’s the crazy duo banging out some shit, the song is called “into africa”.

probably the best known artist going right now from RI is sage francis, from bristol, which is sort of between providence and newport?  they had the first 4th of july celebration, so it only makes sense that an anarcho-slam poet would emerge from there.  here’s “escape artist”.

and of course the biggest band of all to have gotten their start in the ocean state are the talking heads, who met at RISD.  you know ‘em, you love ‘em. here’s a very cool early version (i’m guessing circa ‘75) of “psycho killer” live at CBGB’s.  i love you, tina weymouth!

The term rap is a misconceived word.  Many American’s hear the word and instantly think of 50 Cent, bullet holes and tattoos.   This isn’t the fault of the media as much as it is the fault of the genre.  The genre of popular rap or hip/hop, which are for the most part similar styles, has been vaulted into a genre of egotistical, dim-witted artists who can’t even carry a beat without the assistance of a music production crew.  Yet underneath it all lies a brand of music more raw and insatiably addicting than its competitive categories. Early rap groups like A Tribe Called Quest helped put the genre on the map, with the release of albums like “People’s Instinctive Travels.” N.W.A. symbolized a more gangster style of rap music, whilst newer versions of the genre appeared in the nineties with The Beastie Boys.  Subsequently the genre has evolved and changed, producing the likes of Mos Def and Talib Kweli in the 2000’s. The genre has evolved and left a trail of classics in its wake.

I have downloaded more free music samplers this week. Seriously. The first one was a Lollapalooza sampler and included what may be my new favorite song. Alberta Cross – The Thief & the Heartbreaker Seriously. I can’t stop listening to it. That and old old old New Amsterdams.

I saw BNB last night. Wifey was with me. It was the usual. “Give me a hug”, flirt, flirt, flirt. Whatever. Not falling for it this time! (Totally would fall for it). We walk out and she looks at me and says “He is really cute”. Thanks, betch. I know.

Feeling old today. Back to school time always gets me nostalgic. I miss college. I miss my friends and how there was always something to do. I miss drinking cheap, nasty beer/alcohol and playing drinking games. I miss the food. If you know where I went to school, you know exactly where I mean. I’d kill for that pizza or a bagel. Mmm. I miss the way campus looked after a storm. I just miss school.

I made a nostalgia mix today. It’s all crap I listened to freshman year. 18 years old and fresh faced and so very misguided. I thought I was so cool because I used to be the girl who knew about all the bands no one else did. I’d find them first. iTunes has a free indie sampler right now. I just downloaded it. I don’t recognize a single name. Not one. And I hate 90% of it. Where’s my AARP card? When do you stop being cool or relevant? Am I there and no one is telling me?! Promise me, my lovely friends and readers (since you’re one in the same, traffic is DOWN) that you’ll tell me if I start getting pathetic. I know, I’m not even 30 yet. But I am not used to not being the cool, indie rock girl.

Date night tomorrow. I’m meeting him at one of my favorite local places for whiskey and ginger ale. He wants to go for wings and beer. Although that sounds like an excellent date to me, not a first one. Ribs and/or wings are not something I can be lady like about. But I love them both.

I’ve been feeling so run down lately. No matter how much I sleep. I think it’s just the weather or allergies. The whiskey will help. Mmm.

Space Cowboy called tonight with good news and then we talked about what spurred my epic meltdown last week and I must say, I am so fucking lucky. Savannah calmed me out of my age freak out this afternoon. I have great friends. I do. I’m the type of girl who needs someone to slap me upside the head a la Gibbs every once in awhile and say “CHILL THE FUCK OUT, BITCH!” or sometimes I just need someone I can tell my secrets to.

There are definitely a lot of those. I was thinking on my way home from work tonight about the two parts of my personality. The good girl, we’ll call her lowercases, and then the bad girl. Capitals, natch. I am SO glad no one knows all of my secrets except for me and Jesus. He has to love me. All I have to do is apologize and tell him what I did and I’m forgiven. Right? That’s how catholicism works, right? That and I follow the three B’s. Booze, babies and bingo. I got this.

One last thing about music, when did “indie” start to mean hip hop? I am all about underground hip hop, helloooo. I have a fucking Sage Francis tattoo. But this is like…clubby hip hop. And shit that sounds like it should be on the Juno soundtrack. Le sigh.

So I got a text from Ruby Soho this week. She saw Cory Branan. She brought me up to him and…HE REMEMBERED ME! He told his girlfriend (boo) about me and everything. I can’t wait to see him again next month. A lot of good shows coming up. God I fucking love music.

I’m sorry I’ve been so fucking dull lately. I promise to make tomorrow night interesting. I mean, the dude is a zookeeper…it can’t be boring. Right? Famous last words…

Did you think Sage Francis only was a solo-artist? Think again! Not only does he bring the goods as a hell of a lyricist, he brings his darkness and light in the groups Art Official Intelligence and Non-Prophets.

It’s a lack of information on Art Official Intelligence; I’m only guessing that Sage raps with a band, based on the music. They only released one album titled Voice Mail Bomb Threat in 1998, and that the band probably doesn’t exist anymore. But who knows, maybe they will pop up again.

Non-Prophets is not so much of a group, as it is a collaboration between Sage Francis and the beatmaker Joe Beats. They released their one and only album “Hope” in 2003 on Lex Records. Also there is some Non-Prophets material on Sage Francis’ “Sick of” mixtape series.

In high school and into college, my friends, especially Katie and I, spent a lot of our free time going to shows and concerts. After we turned 21 and had more weekend and nighttime options, we started doing other things with our time.  Over the last few years, even after moving away and graduating college, we’ve still seen a few shows together and it always reminds me of how much I enjoy live music.

In particular, we’ve traveled hundreds of miles to see some of our favorite acts like Atmosphere and Eyedea & Abilites, who we saw Tuesday night at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, Sage Francis, POS, and other hip hop artists. Nobody really ever comes to S.C., which explains all the driving.  

Going to concerts always reminds me of my younger days, but there are some things that are different. Namely, as you can see from the pictures, we were not up at the front of the stage. One of my biggest concert pet peeves is that no matter where I stood, there was always some big, smelly dude who was taller than me who would elbow his way in front. I’m only 5′4, so it doesn’t take a lot to be taller than me. And for future information, big anger comes in small packages.

So, this time, instead of trying to fight through the crowds of sweaty people, we found a higher spot that wasn’t so congested. I guess that is a sign I’m getting older. Which, speaking of, my birthday month begins Saturday. So mark your calendars.

I thought about cropping myself out of this picture, but oh well! Here I am making a confused face anyway.

Before the show, Slug from Atmosphere was outside shaking hands with people in line. I thought that was really nice, even though I was very nervous and obviously incapable of not looking like the slow friend. It’s ok though. The upside of liking musicians who don’t exclusively go on tour at massive venues, is that you often have a chance to meet the people you came to see.

Another artist, poet and social worker to come out from Strange Famous records, and has been there from the beginning of its birth. His spoken word and music incorporates activism, politics and sometimes religion with passionate flare.
“Prayers for Atheists” is the name of Jared Paul’s Band that will be releasing an album this year through Strange Famous Records, and unlike many pop-punk bands, Prayers for Atheists brings back the rough sound of 70’s punk and will be a favorite amongst true punk lovers.
