As an iPhone user myself I can’t help wondering whats next for the device, when you think of the features the iPhone lacks, which lets face it is about 5, after that what can Apple introduce to make the iPhone appealing?
App Store
The only answer I’ve been given to that question is the App Store, now with over 100,000 apps (as of Q4 ‘09) but lets face it, you won’t use them all will ya, and once you’ve played one racing game, the others look the same, same with shooters, and more, I’m just wondering whats next.
Since the first iPhone back in 2007, Apple haven’t changed the UI or the way the iPhone works once, whilst some may like that as it makes it an easy transition, I don’t know, to me the iPhone is still missing something which I can’t put my finger on it.
Here’s what I’m basing it on, like I said the App Store has now over 100K applications, but we’ve all got the same apps, everyone seems to have the ‘FaceBook’ app for example, which is more or less essential for anyone, but we can all get FaceBook on all mobiles, even that old Nokia 6233 I’ve got lying around somewhere, and YouTube is also now available for even the basic-est devices.
Touch Screen
Since the iPhone in ‘07, touch screen + phone, lets face it, wasn’t really working out, then Apple did their magic and, boom, touch screen working seemlessly, but now everyone knows how to make touchscreen phone and before you know it, you’ve a whole bunch of different manufacturers interpretation of the iPhone, which is all good and all and don’t get me wrong when you first get an iPhone, or an iPod Touch for that matter, its a great experience, but I’m the type of guy who used to have a new phone every 6-10 months, and whilst I’ve not got a different iPhone than I started with, I feel that everything you can get from the iPhone is now on the iPod Touch, but is also on most mainstream phones, the App Store, Touchscreen, having a touchscreen iPod, is now just a feature that everyone can follow. Speaking of touchscreen, the iPhone was the first touchscreen phone I’ve ever purchased, but after a while you do find yourself itching to actually press a button, I was using a Samsung this week, just a standalone one, nothing special, but it felt great to actually text using actual buttons, and lets face it, you can’t send an SMS with an iPhone on a bus, its more or less impossible, you’re relying on the corrector.
What do you want from the iPhone then?
I think it would go in Apple’s favour if they made an iPhone with an actual button keyboard, sort out the annoying features the iPhone needs, “Hey, can you send us that through Bluetooth?”, “…No, actually”, I’m fed up of answering that!

As an early adopter of the Pace Twin I’ve been using a Freeview PVR for as long as they’ve existed, and as I posted before, mine was pimped a little (with a 60GB drive) to improve on the stock spec. Sadly the recent Freeview channel shuffle seems to have brought it to the end of its useful life. Perhaps it’s just the poor signal quality from my communal aerial feed (though my other Freeview TV and boxes seem to cope), or maybe it’s just not up to snuff any more? Regardless of the cause, viewing and recording of many channels had become too much of a hit and miss affair. Time for a change, and some new gear.

I didn’t do my usual extensive research, just a quick dive into some end user reviews on a few online shopping sites. The Sagem seemed to come out less badly than some of the others, and was in stock for £129.99 at my local Argos (along with a £10 voucher offer) so I ventured out into the rain and bought one.

The big shock is that it has no UHF output. Perhaps this shouldn’t be a surprise, as analogue TV is being progressively decommissioned, but one of the nice things about the Twin was being able to watch it on any TV in the house. I briefly considered buying a UHF modulator from Maplin to fix this omission, but in the end plumped for a jury rig arrangement with my ancient VCR (Scart in -> UHF out).

There are however some good things about the new box:

• It can record on both tuners at once
  • and you can watch another recording at the same time
• Series linking seems to work, even for those Saturday evening shows that jump around the schedule every week
• The 320GB (~160hrs) drive is much bigger than the 60GB (~30hrs) that I had in the Twin, so I can leave the kids stuff on there
  • and it allows me to put stuff into sub-folders so there’s not too much clutter in the programme list
• It has an ‘exportation’ feature that allows programmes to be copied onto FAT32 USB devices
  • and the exported files seem to be bog standard MPEG2 .ts files, no nasty encryption or silly file formats

There are also a few areas where I can see a need for improvement:

• It can play mp3s off USB media (FAT32 only, though it seems to work but whine with regular old FAT), which is cool but:
  • You need to switch mode from media list to player if you want it to actually play successive tracks
  • It is supposed to be able to copy stuff from USB to the local HDD for more convenient access, but this is a totally unreliable process. I have given up on trying to copy my music library (16GB) onto it. It seems to struggle with a single album’s worth of files, never mind a few hundred.
• The favourites lists are not all that easy to edit, and the split between TV and Radio can also be confusing (it seemed to me initially that I had to choose TV or Radio, but in fact you can have both in a favourites list).
• The UI/remote control combination can seem a little sluggish at times.
• The skip forward function (achieved by pressing >|) skips 5mins. UK ad breaks tend to be 4mins, so the function becomes pretty useless, as you either have to miss or rewind a minute. The 1min skip on the Twin was fine, and the 30s skip on my Panasonic box is OK (though 8 button presses per ad break is a bore). C’mon guys, either make this configurable, or make the default fit for purpose.

It would of course be killer if:

• I could use it to replace my streaming media player (a Kiss DP-600), which would involve:
  • Having an Ethernet port and UPNP support
    • Better still if you could do ‘exportation’ over the LAN
  • The ability to play DivX (HD)
• If the media player stuff actually worked then a directory sync tool would be handy for managing large libraries.

Overall though I’m finding it hard to complain given the price, and the fact that it hasn’t failed in any meaningful way (yet – fingers crossed). Even if it does end up missing a recording, then that doesn’t seem too much of a big deal these days. I wonder how much longer it will be before the whole concept of a PVR becomes redundant, and we just have a local cache of the media library in the sky (for those times when it just doesn’t make sense to drag those bits across the internet)?

Em tempos em que netbooks e smartphones são o grande boom do momento, a francesa Sagem trouxe à Futurecom 2009 um lançamento inusitado: o Spiga, um pequeno computador que está sendo propagandeado pela empresa como “o menor computador pessoal do mundo”.

Não tenho dados em mãos para comprovar se o Spiga é mesmo digno desse título ou não, mas posso afirmar que se trata mesmo de um dispositivo surpreendente. Começando pelo seu tamanho, medindo 158 x 94,1 x 18,6 mm e pesando 315 gramas– ele literalmente cabe na palma da mão.

Por algum motivo que não compreendi, a Sagem não considera que o Spiga seja um netbook, tampouco um notebook, então quem somos nós para tentar classificá-lo, certo?

Rótulos à parte, o “computadorzinho” tem uma configuração ideal para navegar na Internet, redigir textos e trabalhar com demais aplicativos simples: Chipset Intel Atom 1.1GHz Z510, Windows XP Home, 512 MB de RAM e armazenamento em memória Flash de 8GB.

Com relação à interface, o Spiga economiza espaço por não ter um touchpad, mas sim uma tela de 4.8” touch, onde o cursor do mouse é controlado através de uma caneta stylus ou com o toque dos dedos. Basta encostar no ponto desejado para fazer um clique, como se fosse em uma interface de smartphone da atual geração. Já o teclado, apesar de compacto, permite que o usuário digite sem muitos problemas.

Quanto às conexões, o pequeno computador acessa wi-fi e 3G, e dispõe de uma porta USB, entrada para mini-SD, para fone de ouvido e conta com microfone embutido e webcam de 1.3 megapixels. Seu preço deve girar em torno de R$ 1.500 e R$ 2 mil, e a previsão é de que chegue ao mercado nacional no início de dezembro.

What BSkyB Started:  It seems all of Europe is buzzing with the hopes of seeing actual 3D content on their telly next year based on the BSkyB announcement in July that it will launch Europe’s first 3D TV channel programming in 2010.  The frenzy was further stoked by the Guardian Newspaper’s “Question of the Week” asking readers “Will 3D TV be a Hit?” So the new buzz word in the television industry must be “3D”.

Mob Mentality: Yes, 3D TV has been anointed in the press as the next killer app. Guaranteed to wipe out all other types of programming. Driving hoards of customers to their local struggling retailer, waiving fists full of cash (or debit cards) screaming for new 3D TV sets to see all of their favorite shows in 3D.

How Can STB Manufactures Take Advantage of the 3D TV Hysteria? Easy, just market a 3D Set Top Box! Never mind that format, encoding and transmission standards are still being debated by standards bodies.  What codec will be used for transmission?  What bandwidth will it require?  What QoS is acceptable?  Will they require glasses?  Shutter, Polarized or Dual Color?

Battle of the EU Trade Show Press Releases: Just in time for IFA and IBC we have company after company jumping on the 3D bandwagon.  A few examples:

Just use 3D in your marketing and everyone will assume you mean decoding and playback of actual 3D TV content.

SENSIO and Sagem Win The Best 3D Marketing Hype Award at IBC: I really had to read and re-read this one to make sure I understood what was being offered.  These providers have claimed, in writing, to actually convert “any type of broadcast” into 3D playback on “any 2D or 3D TV” — and if you keep it in your barn you can spin straw into gold!

SENSIO and Sagem Communications Showcase a 3D Digital Terminal at IBC “Thanks to this integrated solution, service providers will soon be able to reach all subscribers, equipped with 3DTVs or not, via one and unique signal, regardless of the type of broadcast network. Since the set-top box is agnostic to any type of 3D display technology implemented within TVs, it can support any type of 2D or 3D TVs thus allowing service providers to easily migrate from 2D to 3D services.”

Back To Reality:  I have no doubt that 3D TV will be available in most markets within the next 5 years (the minimum sales cycle for replacement TVs).  In a time when MSOs are struggling with bandwidth usage and downgrading HDTV, it seems like there are still a few challenges standing in the way.  Marketing a new dimension in television before it is really available seems like a fool’s errand.  Is everyone too young to remember the Sony BetaMax vs. VHS battles?  Surely we have not forgotten the recent ceasefire in the Blu-ray and HD-DVD video CD format war.

These recent forays into the world of hype remind me of a quote from my former boss at OpenTV and the current Head of TV Technology at Google, Vincent Dureau:  “The killer app for television is watching TV!”

Probably Sagem’s most stylish handset to date. Its slim, light build, good looks makes the Sagem my511X very easy on the eye. The novel flat keypad looks great when lit up even if we do have some issues with its usability.

next hp was sony ericcson w38i. actually, i refused to buy a new one but he approached me to do so. so, let it be. suke hp nie. first time guna flip hp. sebelum-sebelum nie cume classic design ajer kan. saye tak lama guna hp nie.. oleh sebab saye memang ganas guna barang. hp nie ada masalah screen. selalu sangat wat hal. design cantek, ada touch button, ada signal infra, gambar ok, suara okay. cume tak berape kuat and what makes me so dissapointed was its regularly hanged!!! ;p guna hp nie kejap sangat. dalam beberape bulan aje.

next hp is.. yang saye gune sekarang. yeahhh! saye suke hp nie nokia 3120. banyak sebab nape. tapi memang best. gambar cantek, very loud volume, video ok, ada 3G. senang citer, nielah hp yang selama nie saye cari. semua apa saye nak ada. mula-mula saye tak nak sebab design dia tak lawa. yer memang tak menarik, macam hp lame, but dia hp baru, dah banyak guna kat china dan korea.  tapi sebenarnya, macam-macam ada! harga pun murah, RM400++ jek. alhamdulillah, lama guna. tak meragam. terima kasih nokia 3120. kaulah dambaan cinta-ku~!!

L-1 Identity Solutions reported an in-line quarter this morning, with mixed guidance. 

The Company will host an investor call at 11:00am EST today.

Overall Take:  I like the potential of this company, but the balance sheet (slightly less of an issue given cash flows and recent rework of credit facility) and limited near-term visibility keeps me sidelined.

Recapping Earnings and Guidance:  The company reported ($0.01) on $168m versus analyst estimates of ($0.01) on $169m.  For Q3 L-1 issued negative guidance of $0.00-$0.02 on $175m-$180m versus estimates of $0.05 on $195m.  Finally, for FY09 the Company guided to $0.06-$0.12 on $700m-$725m versus consensus at $0.09 on $732m.  While the organic growth rate looks pretty solid and FY guidance doesn’t appear that far off, investors will likely view the backend loaded guidance as negative. 

A Few Additional Thoughts on Guidance:

• I’m guessing that the passport business looks fairly soft for the rest of the year.  The acceleration leading up to the June 1, 2009 WHTI deadline (the program that requires United States Citizens to carry about a passport in returning from Canada, Mexico, etc) is over and the negative effects of the recession on passport volumes are likely to impact performance.  The passport business could still be a nice catalyst, if the Company is successful in landing a few of the international ePassport contracts, as that market looks very healthy for the next few years. 
• The Company also cited Registered Traveler (the program for pre-screening airline passengers that was effectively shut down in June, but which is trying to be revived) and delays in international orders as contributing to the lowered guidance.  I’ll bite on the international delays, but I would guess that Registered Traveler was a fairly minimal contributor.  The original contract was worth up to $50m over five years.

Conclusions:  Overall, I expect volatility in shares of L-1 to remain.  The company continues to have a relatively leveraged balance sheet, though terms on its debt have recently been reworked in its favor, and the model remains somewhat ”lumpy” given a host of acquisitions over the past few years and the impact of large government programs. 

I expect L-1’s state and local sales and passport business will be somewhat stagnant over the next year.  As such, I believe growth will be constrained in the near-term.  With a valuation of roughly 1.6x NTM EV/Sales and 11x NTM EBITDA and given my conservative investing approach, shares aren’t quite into my range yet. 

The real opportunity in its market, at least for the next 12 months, will be internationally (see what Sagem is doing and take a look at ePassport and eID expansion) and possibly in DOD biometric programs (a wildcard).  L-1 hasn’t done much outside of the United States, especially pre-Digimarc, and given I still believe the overall business model is attractive, I may be inclined to re-evaluate my position should the Company show signs of being able to capture the international opportunity.
