After asking Luke about the compassionate and sentimental side of the story would be like, he gave me a list of relationships that will be the main focus of the movie. And wow, quite frankly saying there will be a lot just doesn’t come close:

Oroku Saki & Oroku Nagi

Oroku Saki & Hamato Yoshi

Hamato Yoshi & Tang Shen

Turtles & Splinter

Turtles & Turtles

Baxter & Wife/Daughter

^ Yes this is good, very good, finally some interaction between ‘each other’ in this movie. Honestly I’ve felt things grow cold between the turtles, and even between Splinter. While not all these relationships feature love and growth as a family (such as the turtles will have in the movie), each will have a unique theme from the other. Take Oroku Saki and Hamato Yoshi for example, it will be of conflict and how things turned for the worse between them. With some detailed information about these relationships we can clear your thoughts of doubts and idea’s you may think will be relevant to the purpose of each relationship, but for now, I’m afraid you’ll just have to keep those doubts and idea’s till the time that I do have the information XD.

- – - – - – - -

Well changing the subject, let’s talk about the turtles weapons and how the turtles weapons greatly match their personalities:

So where did they get their weapons, was Splinter involved?

As the person who trained the turtles and understands their abilities and character better than anyone, Splinter would have also decided who shall use which weapon. Ensuring the right turtle receives the right weapon is a huge responsibility. The sword is suited for a different personality than the sai, and only the right personality will bring out the weapon’s true potential. This is something only a ninja master would know, like Splinter.

So why were the turtles chosen to use their weapons?

The first thing that must be done is to analyze each weapon to better understand how they would compliment the user. The weapons in our vision are their own character and possess their own personality. In a sense, this allows us to create a relationship between each turtle and their weapon. The more they understand each other, the more powerful they will become together.

Truly, now that I’ve viewed that article, I can see why each weapon was chosen for each turtle. Now, if only I can see a REAL ninja turtle action scene, far more played out and detailed (I even hope to see some matrix styled action 83) then even the latest CGI-Film released back in 2007.

Okay guys, that’s it for now, stay tuned for the next update =D.

With love for the Baba A grand event was staged to celebrate Puttaparthi Sathya Sai Baba’s 84t

With love for the Baba

A grand event was staged to celebrate Puttaparthi Sathya Sai Baba’s 84th birthday.

To celebrate the 84th birthday of Puttaparthi Sri Satya Sai Baba, a five-day festival of music was organised. Several associations of his devotees, followers and members of the city seva samithi in association with the pupils and teachers of Sri Satya Sai Vidya Vihar in MVP Colony, organised the festival of music, dance and drama.

The ballet Sree Paadaalu scripted and directed by M. Prakasa Rao, staged on the penultimate evening on last Sunday was the highlight of the festival.

Enacted by about five scores of pupils of the Sri Satya Sai Vidya Vihara on the imposing stage, attracted a very large gathering. It depicted the story, how a very prideful scientist who was an atheist got totally reformed after coming to know about Sathya Sai Baba from one of his staunch devotees whom he came across by chance.

As was advised by the devotee, he went along with him on a pilgrimage to get ethically worthy enough to visit Prasanthi Nilayam, the abode of Sathya SaiBaba at Puttaparthi and fall on his feet to get blessed by him for deliverance from the ill effects of the sinful life that he had led.

Visualisation as to how his desire gets fulfilled marked the grand finale of the ballet. All dialogues in prose and lyrical form for all the dramatis-personae were perfectly rendered by professionals (evocatively, musically, melodiously and aesthetically) and were pre-recorded. Makeup, sound and stage management were admirably accomplished. No wonder, watching the ballet, spell bindingly turned out to be an enthralling and elated experience.

Well, a new start (again). Joy! I hope this blog will bear more fruit than my previous ones..

I will begin by introducing myself.

My name is Christina, called SAI online and Christ by close friends (they say it’s easier than saying my whole name). My grammar is atrocious so dont mind me, hehe. Anyway, I’m into anime and the Japanese culture. I don’t know why but it just fascinates me. Also, I think I should point this out right now: I am an intense yaoi fan. Yep, yaoi. It’s just so damn sexy ..I mean, it’s very interesting. Haha… moving on. I like to draw alot and I love gaming. I’m getting a tablet soon so maybe I can upload a few of my pictures? Well, that’s after I get enough money (anyone want to donate? *puppy eyes*) to buy it. I LOVE the Vocaloids, especially Len and Akaito. They are very sexy indeed. >.

That’s enough about my boring self.

Today I bought new headphones because my other pair broke. I seem to have bad luck with those things because every month or so they just break. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but it’s quite annoying. So as I was saying, I bought a pair of Skullcandy’s the Paul Frank edition (they have little monkey’s on them so I couldn’t resist!). I was looking at them and remembering my old pair of Skullcandy headphones (which, by the way, also broke D:) and thinking how this brand is better than the JRC (whatever they are called) brand. I liked the fact that Skullcandy’s had no “left” or “right” ear piece, as it made it easier to just throw one in my ear when I wanted to. So after I opened them and looked at the monkey’s, I realized they did indeed have a right and left ear piece. So all this time I was fooled. They could have made it easier to see! (the L and R are on the wire, but it’s hard to see!) For a moment I spaced and instantly forgot which direction was left or right. I felt a little stupid a while later as I thought to myself, “Come on, you’re fifteen! You should know your left from your right…” That moment was an epic FAIL! I can’t even believe I forgot which way was right or left. I’m definitely not telling my mum about this!

So that’s about it… Ah, before I forget! Happy (belated? O_o) Thanksgiving to all!

With love, SAI.

Dun dun, dun dun, dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun DUN!

Better watch out Naruto, Samehada is a Jinchuuriki molester…

So the battle between Killerbee and Kisame continues, Kisame of course appeared to have the upper hand, but Kisame didn’t count on Samehada deciding it didn’t love him anymore.

Instead the slimy sword sneaks over to Killerbee and decides he would rather molest the Hachibi. Killerbee’s bro turns up and unfortunately Sasuke isn’t there to witness the true strength of brotherhood and they team up to lay the smack down on shark face.

Just a thought, but if swords are a euphemism for a certain part of male anatomy, does that mean that Kisame is now dickless? XD

Somehow, I don’t think he’s coming out of the closet…

We find out that Suigetsu and Juugo are alive and well, the Mizukage sees through Danzou’s trap and Sai sends a clone to tell Naruto “the truth that Sakura couldn’t.”

But can he handle it?

So I don’t really have much to say about the battle, except hopefully it really is at and end. It would be nice for one of these things to be short and sweet, rather than overly long and dragged out.

Although as much as Kishimoto can drag out battles at least he isn’t mean enough to drag them out as long as some shounen mangas..
ahemBleachespadasahem

I guess its nice to see what happened to Suigetsu and Juugo, although I don’t really care enough about them to worry about what happened to them in the first place, so meh.

The end is the part I’m really interested in and to be honest I’ve just been waiting for all the battling to get over so we can get back to the whole, Naruto/Sakura/Sasuke thing.

Naruto, Chapter 473

WOW. Kishimoto wasn’t playing this week. Killer Bee and Kisame have been tussling for weeks, and today put an end to the madness.

Kisame was pushed into quite a corner last week, with Samehada, his key to invincibility, switching sides and leaguing up with Bee. This chapter opens with Kisame holding one of Bee’s blades, and preparing to take out the fallen rapper. Too bad it wasn’t gonna work out this way.

One of my favorite aspects about manga/anime is seeing the rawest people participating in battles together. We’ve already witnessed the pure power of the Raikage during the Kage/Sasuke battle, and because of his strength, he quickly climbed my list of the most exciting characters. When he showed up during this fight to help Bee … I got hype. As if seeing Killer Bee and the Raikage on the same page isn’t exciting enough, they took it to the next level as soon as the Raikage showed up. The mighty Hoshigaki Kisame, wielder of Samehada, and called the “Monster of the Hidden Mist”, was defeated in mere seconds by a double-team attack, courtesy of the Kumogakure brothers. I literally almost dropped my coffee on my computer. CRAZY.

The rest of the chapter was pretty much a wrap-up: the Hokage’s switch-a-roo technique was concluded, Suigetsu and Juugo were inconveniently discovered as/by samurai in the Land of Iron; and Sai is going to tell Naruto the full truth of what Sakura was trying to get across a few issues ago. Overall good week — pour one out for Kisame cuz that dude is GONE!

C’mon next week!!

^Favorite Moment: Not even a question — when Killer Bee and the Raikage double-dragoned Kisame and promptly took this dude’s head off. Probably one of my all-time favorite Naruto moments, actually — glad to see such a jerk go the great sharkbowl in the sky! Peace out!!!

——-

Naruto Shippuuden, Episode 137

Another great episode in the pivotal fight between Sasuke and Itachi. Last week left us with an image of Sasuke’s eye being torn out by Itachi, and that’s exactly what it turned to be — an image.

The entire conflict was another genjutsu by Itachi to show Sasuke his death … the thing is, though, this wasn’t just any genjutsu — Itachi broke out the Tsukuyomi for this. Amazingly, Sasuke broke out of this — the most powerful genjutsu in Naruto — with only his regular Sharingan against Itachi’s Mangekyo. As Sasuke stands, (both eyes intact and in his head) genjutsu is rendered irrelevant, and a straight ninjutsu battle ensues. Sasuke has the upper hand, partially due to Itachi’s shock at having his most powerful illusion rendered useless, and partially because Itachi is actually going blind. After a brief stand-off, Sasuke blows the ceiling off the place (literally), and the brothers find themselves on the roof, face to face.

Looking at each other, they both unleash the basic (but still powerful) attack of the Uchiha clan, the Great Fireball technique. Flame to flame, the clash reaches a standstill … until Itachi reveals the next secret of his Mangekyo Sharingan — the almighty black flame, Amaterasu. I don’t even want to get started on explaining the raw power of this technique. The black flames burn through Sasuke’s fireball, and eventually succeed in burning him to a crisp — or so we think. Sasuke has another trick up his sleeve, and uses Orochimaru’s patented body regeneration technique to save himself from a fiery death.

As the episode ends, Sasuke unleashes a mighty flame attack into the air, and the brothers stare each other, out of chakra, waiting for each to make the next move — which Sasuke seems confident will work out to his favor, of course.

A very good episode and great animation — looks like the Naruto creators finally got the message. C’mon next week!!

Favorite Moment: Right after the Tsukuyomi is broken, Sasuke goes into ninja-mode and unleashes a Shadow Shuriken technique on his older brother. Itachi dodges it, but is tricked, as the shuriken is rigged, and at the tug of a wire by Sasuke it explodes shrapnel-style and pierces Itachi square in his leg — and this wasn’t an illusion. Trickery at its finest!

——-

Oh, and since I cheated ya’ll out of neglected to put up a Girls, Girls, Girls post yesterday (it was Thanksgiving, give me a break), here’s a young lady to enjoy. Go ahead and start Googling (is that a word…?)!

Pertama, manusia memiliki kepekaan sosial.

Sathya Sai Baba: I did not like the fulsome praises with which you flooded Me in the Address which was read out when this meeting started. I am yours and you are mine. This is a family get together. As a matter of fact all the gatherings that I meet are family gatherings. The entire mankind is My family. It sounds very improper when a member of the family is extolled by another before the rest. This is a habit, a ceremony that is borrowed from political life, where politicians are given addresses wherein they are praised. So that some benefits may accrue to the place which they are visiting and which present those praises.

Sathya Sai Baba: Swami’s will is firm. No one can alter it. Swami’s glory, fame and sacredness has not been achieved through publicity. They are the results of Swami’s actions. I have no concern with publicity. Action alone counts. What is achieved through publicity will disappear through publicity. Sai will not be affected by propaganda. The world may be affected by propaganda but Sai will remain the same. Many of you are pained by the calumny. Some papers are indulging in disregarding Me. Many are urging that something should be done about it. But I am holding everyone back because that is the best way to deal with praise and blame. The ocean knows no overflowing or drying up.

Sathya Sai Baba: My Power is immeasurable. My Truth is Inexplicable, unfathomable. I am announcing this about Me, for, the need has arisen. But, what I am doing now is only a gift of a visiting card! Let Me tell you that emphatic declarations of the Truth by the Avatars were made so clearly and unmistakably only by Krishna. Inspite of the declaration, you will notice that in the career of Krishna, He underwent defeat with his efforts and endeavours, on a few occasions, though you must also notice that those defeats too were part of the Drama which He had planned and which He Himself had directed. When many kings pleaded with Him to avert the war with the Kauravas, He confessed that his mission to the Kaurava court for ensuring peace had ‘failed’! But He had not willed that He should succeed. He had decided that the war would be waged. His mission was intended to punish the greed and the iniquity of the Kauravas and so condemn them before the world. But, I must tell you, that during this Sai Avatar, there is no place for even such a “Drama” with scenes of defeat and failures. What I will, must take place. What I plan must succeed. I am truth. And truth has no need to hesitate, or fear, or bend.

Now the structure will rise upon it. I go round the world along with no paraphernalia and no publicity, because I am established in My own Glory, in My own Truth. I have Atmic relationship with all, and so I am always succeeding.

PUTTAPARTHI: Higher education should not be pursued with an aim to amass wealth and get power.

It should be done for selfless service to the society, says Sri Sathya Sai Baba.

Addressing students at the 28th convocation of Sri Sathya Sai University at Sai Kulwanth Hall in Prasanthi Nilayam today, Sathya Sai Baba said the real purpose of education is served, when the needy are helped and the society gets the benefit. Love is all powerful and with it the world can be won. One should remember that education without values serves none and good conduct is far more valuable than wealth. There is no greater education or love than that of mother’s love. There is also no greater degree than love, he said.

Emphasising that what one learns through education should be used for the good of society, he said the greater meaning of education is love towards fellow humans and all living beings in the universe. Education is physical and educare is spiritual knowledge.

Expressing concern over the increased rat race for the worldly pursuit, he advised students to learn Sanatana Dharmas, which are truth, love and non-violence. “Love is God and it is in every living being. Inner satisfaction is far more worthy than physical satisfaction.” He advised people to reduce the use of cellphone which has become a hindrance to love and respect to people. “Instead of bringing people together, it is widening the gap among them,” he observed.

In his convocation address, Samuel Sandweiss of University of California, who is also the author of ‘Saibaba: The Holyman and Psychiatrist’, ‘Spirit and Mind’ and ‘With Love Man is God’, elaborated on the purpose and value of education in the context of spiritual needs of human beings.

He said education is the very process which lays the foundation for Dharma (Righteousness) by removing ignorance and letting the self inner shine. Citing examples of the earliest universities Oxford, Salamanca and Soroban in Europe and Nalanda and Taxila in ancient India, he said these institutions had deep religious and presumably spiritual foundations. He lauded the growth achieved by Sri Sathya Sai University and its endeavour for social welfare.

Varsity Vice-Chancellor Vishwanath Pandit presented a report. In all, 21 students received gold medals from the hands of Sri Sathya Saibaba.

District Collector P Janardhan Reddy, SP MK Singh, Puttaparthi MLA P Raghunath Reddy and others were present.

Break Free Of Rituals And Abstractions
Shammi Paranjape
23 November 2009, 12:00am IST

The Srimad Bhagavatam lit a new path to the Divine, free from binding ritual and esoteric abstractions. On the one hand, it portrayed the majesty and might, the mahatmya of the Supreme Being. On the other, it revealed the tantalising possibility of blissful communion with Him in a loving relationship. In doing so, the Bhagavatam introduced the liberating and transcendental gospel of bhakti yoga.

Nothing pleases God as much as devotion. How dear bhaktas or devotees and their bhakti or devotion are to the Lord can be gleaned from the declaration in the Srimad Bhagavatam, that it is for the love of devotees that God takes form from time to time. Sathya Sai Baba says:

“The Avatar or Form Incarnate on earth is only the concretisation of the yearning of seekers. They are the prime cause. The cow secretes milk for the sustenance of the calf. It is the chief beneficiary. But others too benefit from that milk. So along with the sustenance of the bhaktas, other incidental benefits also accrue, such as fostering of dharma.” ~Sathya Sai Baba

Srimad Bhagavatam belongs to the class of Hindu scriptures known as the Puranas, and enlightens humanity on the sacred mystery of incarnations. The mystical life of the divine enchanter Krishna is finely detailed in the Bhagavatam, inspiring devotion in human hearts. Though the concept of devotion is as old as the Vedas, the Bhagavatam introduced the concept of a personal god with countless attributes who could be adored and worshipped as ‘one’s own’, in the form of child, parent, master, friend, or beloved.

The word ‘bhakti’ is derived from the root ‘bhaj’, which has several meanings to serve, to honour, to love, to adore. According to Narada, the great theoretician of bhakti, it is the wholehearted and supreme love of God, obtaining which the devotee feels he has gained the highest attainment in life, as also unalloyed bliss. Sandilya has expressed bhakti as ‘unabated and unslackening attachment to God.’

The Bhagavatam expands the frontiers of bhakti and states, ”When all energies of mind, organs of knowledge and of action become concentrated as a unified mental mode, directed to the Supreme Being, spontaneous like an instinct and devoid of any extraneous motives, the resulting state of mind is bhakti. It is superior even to mukti. Like fire it burns away the soul’s sheath of ignorance.”

Bhakti is divine engagement with the Supreme; it draws upon the highest energies of the soul. It calls for incessant yearning from a purified heart, soaked in devotion. Krishna said of the gopis, blessed souls who attained to this state and whose total devotion for Krishna is at the centre of the Bhagavatam: “They never learnt the Vedas, they never served any teacher, they practised no austerity, but by association with holiness and love alone they attained to Me.”

Sathya Sai Baba says:

“Devotion is the supreme state that man can attain. It is bhakti that proves the eternal truth, Tat Twam Asi Thou Art That that the devotee and God are one.” ~ Sathya Sai Baba

The Bhagavatam too declares bhakti to be the highest gift of God, bestowed on aspirants more rarely than mukti itself. No wonder then that the bhakta is ready to forego even the pleasures of Vaikuntha and the goal of mukti itself, for the ineffable delight of loving his Lord.

Today is Sathya Sai Baba’s birthday.

Wallahu a’lam.

Parents must set the best example

Sai Reflections
Published: 18 Nov 2009

The following words (author unknown) are worth pondering over:

If a child lives with criticism,
he learns to condemn
If a child lives with hostility,
he learns to fight.
If a child lives with ridicule,
he learns to be shy.
If a child lives with shame,
he learns to feel guilty.
If a child lives with tolerance,
he learns to be patient.
If a child lives with encouragement,
he learns confidence.
If a child lives with praise,
he learns to appreciate.
If a child lives with fairness,
he learns justice.
If a child lives with security,
he learns to have faith.
If a child lives with approval,
he learns to like himself.

If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he learns to find love. Praise is good, but don’t overdo it: It has at last been realised that a child does need some encouragement and praise but, like most things, this can be overdone. Give praise when it is due, but don’t shower praise on shoddy work and half-baked efforts. Your child is no fool, and knows perfectly well that it could have done much better, and so loses respect for your judgement if you are too easily satisfied. It is much more helpful to examine the work carefully (whether picture, homework, sandcastle, or anything else) praise the good parts, then give constructive hints on how it could be improved.

In that way, the child will appreciate that you have shown genuine interest, while, at the same time, being encouraged to do better. One needs to build the child’s self confidence, but giving praise where it is not due can produce the opposite result. The child can become addicted to praise and, when it is not forthcoming, a feeling of insurmountable inadequacy then often takes over. The need for ideals: Our aim should always be to prepare our children for life. This means giving them ideals, self-confidence, adherence to values, consideration for others, and the courage to face difficulties. But this also implies that you, yourselves, must practice these virtues. Sathya Sai Baba: “People want happiness in the family, but they fail to lead exemplary lives. The fault lies with both the husband and the wife. If children have taken to wrong paths these days, the parents alone are responsible, as they are not exemplary in their behaviour either.”

Children learn by example: As Sathya Sai Baba says elsewhere, “Parents must set good examples for their children. Parents talk of honesty, but they utter lies in the presence of their children, and even encourage them to speak falsehood. The father, while at home, asks the child to tell the unwelcome visitor that he is not at home! The child is thus taught his first lesson in prevarication by the father himself. There is no use blaming the child if he grows into a social menace.” It is natural for children to imitate the grown-ups around them; that is how they learn. It is no use scolding your child for using some four-letter word that you, yourself, use at every turn. By all means correct the child, but say also that you realise that you must correct yourself as well; you can even ask him to help you correct yourself—he will be very good at it, and you might even succeed in breaking the habit! Sathya Sai Baba: “You should have proper control over your children, but first of all you must have control over yourself. Only when the father is good, can he expect his son to be good. Is it possible for him to keep his son at home if he, himself, roams about as he pleases and goes to places that he should avoid?”

Well, it’s finally here, I got to interview Dan Berger (for real, this time) the writer and artist of many notable projects behind the TMNT comic books. We discuss in the interview the recent purchase of the creator-owned TMNT property by Nickelodeon, His future plans, his views on the TMNT universe, and some of his favorite music and movies.

Once again, I know that I said this to him every time we e-mailed back and forth for the interview (and the handful of other times I’ve e-mailed him), I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to interview a wonderful writer, artist, and above all, someone who I truly admire, in order to show their viewpoint of the business and bring to light some things that fans may just not expect.

Also, Click to see a larger version of the cover for the penultimate issue of Tales by Dan. This is the – basically – world premiere of the image on the interweb.

I apologize for how the images are integrated into the interview… typically you can just make it look like a newspaper type and plunk the pictures so the Text fits around them, but I still haven’t figured out how to do this on WordPress.

let’s dig in!

Thanks once again for doing this interview.

My pleasure.

How did Peter Laird break the news about the deal to the writers and artists, or how did you find out about the deal (with Viacom/Nickelodeon for the Rights to all things TMNT)?

We had a staff meeting about it. Peter and Mirage’s CEO Gary Richardson couldn’t give us early indication that the sale was taking place due to a strict non-disclosure contract they had to sign to work on the deal. It wasn’t a secret that Peter was interested in selling if the right deal came along, so while it was a bit of a shock that it happened now, it wasn’t totally unexpected.

What was your personal reaction directly after the announcement walking around the Mirage office?

Just sadness. I’ve been here for 20 years – far longer than most folks get a chance to do something these days – and I’ve loved just about every minute of it (not alotta fun answering the hate mail we got) and have always been extremely grateful for the opportunities that Peter and Kevin gave me. I know how lucky I’ve been to be a small part of the vast TMNT empire, so it’s very sad to see that luck run out – but unfortunately all good things come to an end.

Any thoughts on whether or not Nickelodeon may approach you to help jump start the TMNT or are they, for sure, starting with a whole new creative team for this new era of TMNT?

Nick hasn’t approached any of the creators from Mirage – if anyone is interested in trying to work for them, they’ll have to go to Nick.

What is your creative process like when writing your scripts for the comics?

For “Tales” we had to submit plots to Peter for approval – so I’d write 4-5 paragraph plots (sometimes a bit longer) that explained the story in full as briefly as possible. From there, Peter would usually request either further explanation for why something was being done, or changes that made him happier with the story. Some plots would take 2-3 drafts while a small minority were approved “as is.”

Once I have a plot approved, I do 4″ x 6″ breakdowns of the comic pages – not quite stick-figures, but very quick sketches of the pages, making notes regarding the script. Once the breakdowns are completed, I then write the script from the breakdowns.

You’ve written your fair share of comics over the last twenty years, do any stand out above the rest as your favorite?

I’m notoriously unhappy with my work as I always want it to be better than it is, so it’s hard to pick favorites. But if you twist my arm (yow!), the most gratifying thing I’ve written is “Tales” #55 (“A Day in the Life”) because it came out as I’d envisioned it and because it was so well received by the folks that read the book. I also have a soft spot for “Tales” #46 (“Temps”) and “Tales” #42 (“The Curious Case of Mr. Jones”).

To my count, you’ve drawn a handful of comics for the TMNT through the years, but have often pitched in to help out with inks, how does this work ethic come about for you guys?

I’ve only blown one deadline in 20 years – and that was by one day (and that was doing forty 4-panel comic strips in 14 days – which actually took me 15 days). I just stay up all night if necessary to make a deadline – and sometimes I’ll stay up all night finishing up work for someone who blew their deadline (which is why you’ll see me doing an odd job here or there on “Tales”). I don’t know where it comes from – probably my midwestern, farm town upbringing mixed with the knowledge that I’m damned lucky to have had the opportunity to do this stuff, so I never took it for granted by slacking off. I just really hate missing deadlines – drives me buggy. It’s actually easy to stay up all night working to meet a deadline, because if a deadline is looking like it might be missed, I can’t sleep anyways.

I have no idea if that answered your question – but it does show how neurotic I am about deadlines.

Do you still draw or are you focusing mostly on your writing duties?

I still draw, but I’ve gotten painfully slow at it over the years due to repetitive-stress injury to my hand (I foolishly use a death grip on the pencil/brush which took a real toll over the decades – so use a light touch, kids). Now I can only work for an hour or so before I have to take an hour or so break – which makes getting stuff done on time very difficult – and with my crazy deadline dementia, I don’t take on too many projects. Right now I’m working on “Tales” #69, which isn’t due ’til March – but it’s gonna take me every bit of that time to get it done because of the hand stress.

Like many people, I love telling stories, so I love writing – and it’s a helluva lot easier typing, “An army of skeletons runs down the hill” than it is to draw it. I’d love to be a full-time comic book writer, but I don’t have the drive or the personality to succeed as it requires a lot of schmoozing, and schmoozing is just about my least favorite thing to do. If I was good at communicating with people, I woulda never started writing/drawing stories to express myself. That’s a double-edged sword right there.

Many of your stories focus on fan favorite Leatherhead, is there any special insight that you can give to the character?

LH is a very intriguing character because his isolation is even worse than the Turtles’ since he is unique and on his own – his mentors left the planet, while the TMNT had Splinter to assist them (speaking of which, that loneliness is part of Splinter’s story, too – something I’d hoped to explore at some point between the two of them). There’s a lot to work with there. Those themes of loneliness and isolation are common in comics because the readers themselves often feel isolated from society (I know I do). So that’s why I relate to the big guy. Those issues are tricky to deal with because they can come off as being too heavy-handed and melodramatic – but there’s just so much fodder for stories with these characters, especially Leatherhead.

On a basic level, my favorite super hero is the Hulk – so I was naturally attracted to Leatherhead since he’s the big, green strong guy in the TMNT universe (and he’s also got some Bruce Banner in him since he studied science with the Utroms – so how could I resist?)

How do you go about writing the distinct personalities behind the turtles, and which character do you enjoy writing most?

I just try to stick with what Kevin and Peter created and illustrate that via the dialog. Raph using more slang, Mike being more colorful, Don using more polysyllabic verbiage and Leo being direct and terse. Raph has long been my favorite as I have the same problem with a short temper and cynical outlook on the world – but as I’ve gotten to be a geezer, I’m leaning more towards Mike’s outlook on life and he’s becoming a favorite. I love how Tristan Jones handled him in “Tales” #64.

I love how the issues you write typically involve some topic that is almost never even mentioned in other comic books like the viewpoint of the Foot enlistee in issue #46, the younger turtle take on #55, or the private school viewpoint of Shadow in the upcoming #67.

Ya gotta try to come up with something a bit different if you want Peter to approve your plots.

You also contrast these with tougher takes on the characters like Leatherhead or most recently issue #63 where the comic’s tough but sprinkled with light moments. How do you strike this balance?

I think it’s important to try to cover as many aspects of the human experience as possible to tell a good story. In a drama there can still be some humor. Even guys out on the frontline in deadly combat are cracking jokes to maintain their sanity – and just as important, their humanity. So trying to mix up the emotional impact of what I’m writing is a goal as it makes the tale relate to the reader’s life - and that’s the most important thing to me.

And what inspires you to focus on some topics that other comics don’t even imagine ever covering?

Covering those humanistic topics is a TMNT trademark. All the guys here have done it – Kevin and Peter started it early on and I think it’s that element of the Turtles’ stories that made the comics so successful and dear to people. The writers here are phenomenal - Kevin, Peter, Jim Lawson, Steve Murphy and Michael Dooney have written fantastic stories and while Eric Talbot hasn’t written as much, he has awesome ideas. I’m just trying to follow in the footsteps of those guys as best I can – and it’s very challenging. I’ve read thousands of comics (as my overflowing closets can attest) and some of my very favorites are TMNT books written by those dudes – it’s been an honor to work with them.

Can you enlighten us on some hints as to your upcoming issues?

“Tales” 66 is a story about how the Madhattan Maulitia, a xenophobic organization, raised funds to get their anti-alien terrorist operation off the ground by kidnapping dogs and holding them for ransom – it’s wacky but hopefully it’ll be fun – Jim Lawson is drawing it in his inimitable style. “Tales” 67, as you mentioned, features Casey Jones’ daughter, Shadow, at her first day of kindergarten and the repercussions of her telling the truth about her family featuring fantastic art by Dario Brizuela and Andres Ponce. Finally, I’m writing and drawing “Tales” #69 which features Shadow in the post-apocalyptic future hunting someone down. There probably won’t be any humor in this issue since it may be my last TMNT comic. I’m trying to channel more of that gritty Eastman and Laird atmosphere from TMNT #1 to come full circle at the end of my run.

I’m super excited about your swan song. Post-apocalyptic Shadow sounds like it will be a blast!

I hope it lives up to your expectations. I’ll do my best.

However, the continuity issue comes up… will this be for sure something that will happen in the future or just an imagined story?

It’s a future story – definitely not imaginary.

Is Tales #67 your last writing project for Mirage or are you involved with issues #68, 69, or 70?

#69 is my swan song. #68 was written by Jake Black with art by Jim Lawson and #70 is a “Return to New York” story being done by Jim and Eric Talbot. That will be a momentous sending-off for the title.

Are you going to continue managing the Mirage Publishing site through the years or do your duties end in the tentative time of May 2010?

In all likelihood, publishing will be closing its doors in May.

Do you have any other possible comic projects you may work on after TMNT?

No comics planned – I tried self-publishing and that was a colossal failure – so I’m not keen on doing that again. As I mentioned, I suck at self-promotion, so I seriously doubt I’ll ever be making the rounds at cons trying to dig up work.

I’ve got several children’s book projects I’m gonna sit down and put together. Back before I wanted to do comics (when I was like 5), I wanted to do children’s books – it’s always been a goal but it got sidetracked when I lucked into the Mirage gig. Now that Mirage is going away, it’s time to get back to my ancient goal.If you continue through your tentative plans for a children’s book,

What could we possibly expect?

I’ve got several varied ideas, but I can’t really talk about them without giving away too much – but they involve monsters, cats, and of course, kids.

Will you do the art as well as the writing duties?

Yeah – but that’s a tough row to ho these days. Publishers typically want someone to write (usually a celebrity) and then they’ll assign an illustrator of their choice to do the artwork – but I’m not particularly interested in doing it that way, since I’m not a celebrity and I feel too close to my ideas to let someone else draw them, at least initially. If I were to be fortunate enough to have some success and be able to do lots of projects, I wouldn’t mind working with other artist because there are so many out there far more talented than I am (which is one reason why writing for “Tales” has been so much fun).

What are some of your other future plans outside of comics?

Beyond the book things, I just dunno right now. I graduated fromcollege waaaaaaay back in 1989, so I don’t really have any employable skills in this here modern era – so I may go back to school to learn how to do things the way they’re done nowadays. As anyone who’s been to the TMNT web site can attest, I do not know the first thing about putting together a pro-level web site, so I might delve into that and learn how to do it. I’m going to need to find a job with health benefits, so that’s the most important thing (and in this lousy economy, no easy feat).

Unfortunately, I figured I’d give you some perspective and mention that I was born in 1989…

Nothing unfortunate about it – I know how old I am. I feel it every day.

As I tell all my buddies, getting old sucks, but it beats the
alternative.

Is your grand wall of TMNT toys still going to hang up in your office?

For awhile, but I’m going to be auctioning them on eBay at some point

next year to pay the bills.

What’s your favorite music/band/musician?

That’s funny because my wife and I were just talking about this the other day. I’m a metalhead to the core, but I listen to everything

other than opera (that kinda singing bugs me – dunno why). That said, lately my tastes are growing significantly more mellow as I’m trying to be happier in my geezerhood (and I gotta say, metal music doesn’t make me feel angry – it makes me feel alive – but there’s no denying the lyrics are predominantly negative and can put me in a sour mood). I just went to see Blackmore’s Night a couple weeks ago in Boston and it was a blast – the crowd exuded so much positive energy – it was truly a “magical” experience. I’ve been listening to them for ten years now, but that night I realized that they’re by far my favorite band currently releasing albums. Ritchie Blackmore has written many of my all-time favorite songs throughout his career – guy is a genius.

I’ve got over 3,000 CDs of various genres, so it’s really difficult to make a list as I’m sure to leave out some stuff I love. Off the top of my head, all-time favorites that I’ll always be playing on iTunes are Rainbow (with Ronnie James Dio), Black Sabbath (Ozzy and Dio eras), Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Judas Priest, Van Halen (with David Lee Roth), AC/DC, Thin Lizzy and Rose Tattoo. I also love Enya, Bill Douglas, 2002, Loreena McKennitt, Jimmy Buffett, Brad Paisley, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tom Waits and The Pogues. More “recent” metal bands I listen to frequently are Nile, Iced Earth, Korpiklaani, Agalloch, Blind Guardian, Kivimetsän Druidi, Mastodon, Emperor, Negurã Bunget, Novembers Doom, Shadows Fall, Opeth, Týr and Slough Feg – but there are literally hundreds more bands that I enjoy. I could be typing half the day.

What are you currently reading?

The “Red Hulk” trade paperbacks. I read Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities” recently and it was awesome (first time I’d ever read it), but I needed some lighter fare and turned to graphic novels. I’m really looking forward to reading the latest Terry Pratchett novel – after Tolkien, he’s my favorite writer – but I asked for that as a Christmas present, so it’ll be awhile before I dig into it.

What is/are your favorite film(s)?

“Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” (from 1971) and “My Neighbor Totoro” are my most favorite films. I’m not a movie buff (more into music) – but I dig the usual suspects in science fiction and fantasy - but those two flicks really warm the cockles of my heart every time I see them – which is at least once per year.

What is the comic that continues to inspire you?

Too many to pick just one. Lately it’s been “The Goon” by Eric Powell - his artwork is just beautiful and the stories are fun. I like fun… and beautiful artwork ain’t so bad either. I recently read the Thor trades with art by Olivier Coipel, and his work is just awe inspiring. Stuff I’ll always love and go back to again and again are “The Spirit” comics by Will Eisner, “Captain Marvel” by C.C. Beck, “Cerebus” by Dave Sim and Gerhard, “Bone” by Jeff Smith, “Calvin & Hobbes” by Bill Watterson and, of course, the TMNT comics.

What, in general, inspires you?

Sometimes it can just be a beautiful day, taking a walk and feeling glad to be alive which creates the urge to be creative. Usually it’s

comics, books and the occasional movie or TV series (“Firefly” needs to be mentioned here – Joss Whedon is a fountain of inspiration for me). When I see something that moves me emotionally and/or spiritually, it ignites the drive in me to try to create something that contains that elusive “magic” in hopes that the work I do might help someone in some way (just as the thing that inspired me helped me). The “Wheel of Life” thing – if something inspires me, it makes me want to try to do something that might inspire someone else. It’s basically “pay it forward,” I guess. I’m hoping to do stuff that some folks will find precious. That’s kinda corny, but it’s what keeps me going. We’re all in this together and life is short – so I’m just hoping to do stuff that’s meaningful.

Passports – Lost And Found

Each one of us is in the very same situation. Any little accomplishment, any little deed is always supported by the unseen hand of our Beloved Lord. When I look back into the face of time, I find a rainbow of memories flashing before me. There is one thing I never failed throughout. It is the presence of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, saturated by His Love. Every moment is filled with His omnipresence, omnipotence and omniscience. However it is for us to recognize this truth A couple of years ago, my parents along with my brother and I were taking a walk down the shopping lanes of London where we intended to make our purchases. On our way out one of the supermarkets, my father accidentally happened to put his hand into his hand baggage and to our dismay he found all our passports missing!

We were initially panic stricken, but our faith in Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba removed all our fears. We searched all around the place, retracting our steps but there was no sign of any of our passports. My father went down the lane making inquiries, but none of them brought us anywhere close to our passports. My father finally decided to register the problem with the police and started looking out for police officer.

As he proceeded, a young Englishman whom he saw for the first time came straight to him and said. “You must be looking for the lost and found department. Sir it is right over there,” and gave him some landmark. My father walked into the office of the British cops, as he had been directed to. As he opened the door of the lost and found department, he saw the officer in-charge just placing all our passports in a bag. “Thank God”, his exclamation was enough to inform the officer that those passports belong to us.

Nevertheless he looked at my father with a smile and asked, “Are these your passports?” The answer of my father in the affirmative seemed to delight the officer and on being asked how the passports landed there, he said. “Didn’t you meet anyone on the way up?”

My father said that there wasn’t any one he met. But the officer was not satisfied. He went on and said that the man who gave the passports just left a few seconds before my father came in and he said that he was the owner of the shop. My father just posed one last question on his way out with passports. “How did he look like?” The reply to the question was enough to throw us back in our seats and start thinking. Every single description matched the splendor of our Beloved Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba and we were deeply thankful for all that he had done for our family.

It was about nine months after that Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba appear in the dream of my father and confirmed His presence at London in a very unique way. The amount of concern Bhagavan has for each of us in much more than what the word concern literally means. The unfathomable ocean of His love goes far beyond our mind’s comprehension. There is a lot we students to learn from His actions, from His words and a lot to learn from His love.

We have to travel far beyond to be able to know actually how fortunate each of us is to be with Sathya Sai Baba. What we see of Him today is a very minute spectacle of what He actually is. Each one of us is on a long journey, “from us to ourselves” and we are immensely fortunate to have our goal. Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba as our guide. And on this journey, it is my constant prayer to Bhagavan that He be with us and guide us throughout so that I may be an instrument in His hands.
