From where we left off two weeks ago, our hero had defeated his best friend while a silhouette of Athena ascended from the clouds to meet the Principal of the school, with the audience asking “What on earth is going on?” Saint Seiya: Omega‘s past two episodes thus give us some answers, and a heck lot more questions.

Episode 8 is the really plot heavy episode that I enjoyed the most. Kouga finally realizes that Athena is actually some mystical aqua-haired girl, which to be honest, had it coming; there’s no way Saori could have come back that quickly. I also speculated that the School President was up to something and no doubt, he turns out to be a follower of Mars. Why so? We never really do find out, but we are lucky to see Kouga get his butt kicked in quite the fashionable way by the Golden Saint. Guess the power of will alone can’t save you all the time.

The most interesting part then, is when Kouga gets thrown into prison (instead of, well, being killed, which is questionable because you’d like to think that if Kouga is actually a threat to Mars, they’d kill him off) and meets the Ninja Seiya. Yes, a Ninja. Apparently there’s that too now, and his Element is from the shape of a Wolf. Haruto seems to be sort of like Souma and Eden mixed together; he’s playful but he’s also a fan of mocking other people. Though let’s face it- who wouldn’t mock Kouga, inheritor of the Pegasus Cloth who still can’t master his Element completely? Okay, maybe I’m being a little rough. Haruto’s blend of the Ninja methods along with his Saint powers is intriguing though. He’s the first one so far who doesn’t use his Element….purely, and manipulates it with the training of another power. Whereas the rest of the Seiyas we have met so far use their power from their Element, Haruto uses both, and he also seems to have mastered it completely during the time he was in prison. All that time alone might have given him quite the egotism, but despite that, Haruto helps Kouga out and they escape with Yuna and Ryuho (who were so evenly matched that a winner wasn’t announced) along with a slightly injured Souma. Together, they finally use their attacks and get out safely; once again, emphasizing the theme of friendship.

I guess this concludes the Palaestra Arc or rather the introduction to the main characters we’ll be seeing for the majority of the show. It was a good setup- we have a good start to the plot and we have the basis for more character development. My main questions still haven’t been answered however- why was Kouga not killed? Who is the green haired girl who is the fake!Athena but still has the Element of Light? Is Palaestra gone forever? What is Mars’ true objective? Where is the real Athena? And is Darkness just…an overall, bad Element? I’m a fan of moral relativity, as said before on this blog, so hopefully the latter question won’t be true, but I do have to remember that this show is aimed at a children audience (though that really shouldn’t bother with the idea of “not all darkness is evil”). From here I expect we are going to focus on a filler arc of sorts, or more character development- the thing I look forward to the most, as most of our characters’ pasts have only been hinted at. While I haven’t watched the previous Saint Seiya series, I think I’ll still be able to get a decent understanding of the universe and how the concept of being a Seiya works as the show goes on. Or so…I hope.

That said, It won’t really take a genius to figure out that I’m going to write about the new owner of the legendary “Pegasus cloth” and Saint Seiya Omega (聖闘士星矢Ω).

First of, I would like to say that it can be quite stupid unwise to compare this to the original Saint Seiya. I believe that sometimes the best thing to do is watch a “sequel” like it is supposed to be an independent series. And I think that this is one of those cases, especially if you are a big fan of Saint Seiya. 

Now, is Saint Seiya Omega a good anime? Yes, but I had hoped for a little more original protagonist. There have been countless protagonists who appear very weak and hotheaded, but who lights up and saves the day with his/hers immense powers when his friends are in peril, or whatever. Kouga (光牙) is one of them. But I guess that’s what works. There is something to watching seemingly weak guys/girls and to be able to watch their progress and growth – and that is without a doubt one of the reasons why I watch this anime. The question is, will he ever gain real control over his cosmo? You’ll have to watch to find out.

The story goes like this. A boy, Kouga, inherits the super legendary Pegasus cloth, and in his search for Soari Kido (城戸 紗織) or Athena (whom he believes went missing, or got kidnapped), he has to prove, to pretty much everyone he meets, that he is the rightful owner of the cloth. But I don’t believe that it is because he want to impress anyone, he want to show them that he’s not worthless, and that he is good for something. And not least, he need to show himself. He may talk big, but I think it’s easy to see his insecurity and doubts.

The art is, to no surprise, very “Saint Seiya-ish” – if I can say that. It may be because I’ve never experienced Saint Saiya, but I can’t don’t really care for the art style. To be honest I think it’s a little outdated. At least, I prefer a little realism. I’ve had enough of big hair and what looks like massive sideburns. So it goes without saying that I don’t really like Souma’s (蒼摩) hair. This even annoys me while I’m watching the original Saint Seiya. I get the impression that the writers, or whomever, is trying to bring us back to the 1980′s.

The voices, at least Kouga’s, isn’t really what you’d expect from an anime airing in 2012. I can’t really put my finger on what’s wrong with Kouga’s voice, but it sounds like he has a cold or something. I’ve also noticed that many of the characters in Saint Seiya have the same “problem”.

You may ask why I think it is a good anime. So far I feel that I haven’t written much positive about it. I do like the story, I have heard it before, but still. There is something about the feeling you get when you watch it, at least I feel like I’m taking part in something much greater. Let’s face it – if you’ve heard of anime, you’ve probably heard of Saint Seiya. When you put together all the characters, story and animation style – you do have a nice anime, believe it or not, but it just works. To be honest in my case, it may be because I know it is a part of the Saint Seiya-story. And I really like the cloth-aspect, and how they use the stars and mythology in the setting.

In the end I may have managed to compare this anime to Saint Seiya, sorry. But it is surprisingly difficult, especially when there are certain things that are similar.

2012 Spring series have a some good series running, my #1 pick is probably Accel World, combination between action and drama is quite intense. I love how the protagonist would struggle and push forward despite his disadvantageous. Other series action that I like is Fate Zero continuation, although some new viewer, especially non-Fate Series Fanboy unlike me quite confused and decide to drop it. Actually there’s also Zetman but since I plan to view it later (maybe) I won’t write it down.

On the comedy genre we have Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka: of The Dead, the sequel of the Kore wa Zombie series where Ayumu who become a zombie, and at the same time a Magiclad Girl (but he’s a boy) continue his struggle against Megalo (teh monsters).  Other absurd comedy just like this is Haiyoru! Nyaruko-san, where cute girl aliens fight around in outrageous situation.  Also more moe comedy stuff like Acchi Kocchi also good to be enjoyed with non-high-tension with cute rabu-rabu situation.

Accel World

Accel World setting is on the near future, 15 years after Neurolinker device is published to the crowd, people can now access the global net directly from their brain. While Arita Haruyuki, our protagonist, is short and chubby, he is actually excel in most games. But in the real world, he’s just a victim of Bullying in his school.

But one day someone suddenly a senpai appears in front of him and offer an exquisite program, a game, that “would shatter his reality” as she said it. That is a BrainBurst program, or more specifically a fighting game, a game where you can access the Accelerated World. This world is only opened when the program “optimized” the brain to operate in it’s full capacity, where you can experience 1000 second in just a second ( Kinda like Kabuto clock-up but only the body won’t actually move 1000 times faster ). From then on Haru live start to change and he is on the path to become the best Burst Linker (term for the players).

Adapted from the light novel the Accel World, the plot was written wonderfully while keeping small fanservice and drama here and there. The fight also described quite detail, although how he could survive sometimes a bit cliche. But that’s the thrill that we looking for at a Shonen light novel stuff.

My Score is 8/10

Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka? of The Dead

The continuation of Ayumu struggle and delusion continues, as he return to action suddenly something happening to Mystletainn (the pink transformation stick chainsaw that usually possesed by magic girls), now he’s in trouble… socially. As usual this show is barraged with fanservice  and man… that Tsundere Maid Cafe episode… I was watching it for at least three time and still laughing XD.

Id say 8/10 for this

Eureka 7 – Astral Ocean

As you probably recognize this is also a sequel from Eureka Seven series, the main protagonist is Eureka son, now he’s continuing his mother path and fight with Nirvash, his mecha.

Finally another mecha action, Aquarion is rather gaudy but this is more down to earth, although the enemy is quite humongously out-of-this-world. The plot is good but a bit slow to me.

I give it a 7/10

Acchi Kocchi

All over the place, is really a good title for this one. Adapted from a 4-koma manga, AcchiKocchi is a comedy around Tsumiki-Io baka couple and their friends. Tsumiki is kinda like Taiga (ToraDora) tsundere and strong while Io is naturally attract women but he’s thickheaded.

7/10 for this one~

Sakamichi no Apollon

Normally I would avoid drama especially shoujo one, but this one have JAZZ in it. And the romance drama and friendship plot is quite well written. Although the anime version can be a bit rushed than the manga version.  So far I enjoy the show though.

Nishimi Kaoru has moved from city to city and school to school because of his father’s job. So the first day at his new school was just routine for him. Being intellectual and the new transfer student, he has always been seen as an outcast and all Kaoru had to do was bare it until the next time he moved. But things were slightly different this time. First, he started to get close to the class president, Mukae Ritsuko, and, secondly, unlikely as it seemed, grew closer to Kawabuchi Sentaro. Sentaro was infamous for getting into fights, skipping class and was an overall bad boy. Strangely enough, the three of them find common ground in music, namely jazz, and Kaoru finds himself actually enjoying the new town.

I’d say 8/10

Jormungand

If you miss some bloody action and bullet rains like Black Lagoon, you might like Jormungand. Koko Hektamayar and his troupe are international weapon dealer who sell weapons to any potential customer around the globe. This is their story to survive and dance in the bulletstorm, brushing again authorities and hunters alike. Sometime a bit of comedy kick in, but there’s gunshots most of the times.

The story not really deep so far, although some character like Jonah already had their past already revealed in a few episode. There’s small comedic scene here and there, but the seriousness still linger.

I give this 7/10

Saint Saiya Omega

To be honest I don’t expect much, since the art was very… shoujo-ish and it was compared with Lost Canvas which was a great prequel series. But Omega proofs me wrong, it actually pretty good, at least to be enjoyed. I rate it 7/10. And finally Enjoy thenew Pegasus Fantasy…

Kouga meteor fist

As the title said, Kouga finally able to control his light element to another level,i called this “jump” on Kouga’s abillity level,i think this such character development is just too fast,if i would judge the overall this far, this anime doesn’t understand logic very much,   just whenever is there any scene that have emotional issue, a power suddenly pop-up and finished all the stuff just to avoid any further grim feeling.
i could say this anime logic is comfy suited with preteen childern but with all this kind of battles and stuff, plus the GAR/Masculine artwork’s adult could still enjoyed this anime very much. Well it’s just like me, somehow im enjoying this anime up until now because the artwork give me some sense of motivation eventhough the scene were pretty cliche,in conclusion the artwork is just simply GARly Great, perfectly suited for shounen.

Gold Saint Seiya

In this episode just with a little training, kouga was able to blew the deathly seiya’s meteor fist to Souma face,meanwhile he barely shows any progess when he mentored by such a great Silver saint as Shaina who protected Athena as her bodyguard at the moment. in Souma case too, souma did sucessfully found a new technique when he’s fighting kouga as did kouga after souma, well souma case, i wouldn’t doubt if he could find any new technique any time because he’s the one who masterred more in controlling element than kouga.
and furtherly kouga’s fighting technique is amazingly improved  and yet he absorbed all what souma teach to him in so short duration this time meanwhile at the previous episode he barely could fighting well instead just running and aiming his punch on a faces. Actually im expecting more at Kouga and Souma match since they’re  best friend and has big rivally.  but it didn’t meet what i want, Kouga simply beat souma with his meteor fist.

im pretty sure that Kouga will end up just like Seiya in the future there’s no any slight different between them though i don’t watch the orginal version yet,through how kouga make seiya as his inspiration it’s totally copycat from Seiya,maybe i don’t know if Seiya as whiny as kouga.
with all this things happened, the next battle where Kouga and Eden fighting, im pretty sure at the first kouga would screwed up, and then kouga able surpass Eden, but still not sure if kouga will win the match or not if we looking back at the match between Ryouma and Kouga, i thought kouga will win the match, but even he already used all of what he can he still lost to ryouma,but ryouma at critical state too,and yet Eden is at far another level with Ryouma,that’s why im still looking forward their match.

but screw all that kouga, im still inted to keep watching this anime, not just because it’s adapted spin-off or shortened length, it’s because yes Aquila yuna, i came watching this because she’s very beautiful with Seint seiya omega GAR Artwork, and that’s makes her moe for me.

While Saint Seiya: Omega is probably the most generic anime on my list, it still manages to be endearing while using heavy cliches. After winning their first battles, the four friends- Yuna, Ryuho, Souma and Kouga all find themselves weary but still very enthusiastic to continue the battle. Souma and Kouga especially seem to get along over dinner despite knowing that they are to fight each other the next day. As expected in any shounen story, instead of resting and listening to the teacher’s demands of, well, resting, Kouga and Souma (along with, interestingly, Yuna) train in the middle of the night. Kouga ponders over why Seiya is so popular and asks his sensei a bit about him. Not surprisingly, Seiya is the embodiment of what every Saint aspires to be; he is courageous, strong, passionate and a true warrior of justice, never giving up despite all hope being lost. It’s these same words that Souma ponders over when he battles his best friend Kouga the next day, and while almost evenly matched, Kouga wins using his Meteor Punch (Souma however, discovers a new attack of his own: Lionet Burning Fire). In the distance, angst!kid Eden looks on, surprised by how Kouga has progressed with his training and the tournament. What’s more mysterious however, is the ‘principal’, who remarks that Athena (whom we all recognize as Saori-san, aka kidnapped) is coming with an escort. We see a mysterious silhouette, and…that’s the end of the episode!

Saint Seiya: Omega still has a charm to it even with such simplicity. While this week’s episode was more of a buildup toward next week’s revelation on Athena (whatever that may be),  these are the sort of episodes that I tend to like best, as they offer subtle character development. Souma tells it to Kouga himself: he’s gained a better knowledge of the Elements, and has become stronger not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Notice that Kouga hasn’t matured personality-wise in the slightest; he’s become more aware of what it means to be a Saint however. Asking about Seiya didn’t seem to stem from jealousy- no Kouga is genuinely interested in becoming a Saint. Which relatively speaking, is a leap of development. In the first episode, Kouga didn’t even know what a Saint was and didn’t want to be one anyways. Here, he’s not only aspiring to become just a Saint- he wants to become like Seiya. It could be argued that this all comes from his insecurity of not being able to protect Athena from before, but Kouga has found friends- things he didn’t really have where he lived previously, and that has allowed him to grow as a fighter and have a more stable mindset.

While I’m curious about the mystery of who this “Athena” is since we all know that Saori-san has been kidnapped by Mars, my curiosity spiked the most with Yuna. Very little is known about her. We’ve heard the general sob stories with the other three, all we know about Yuna is that she held herself behind a mask. A symbol for what I believe is, a loss of innocence, fragility but also what could be a loss of identity. While the notion of girl Saints having to wear masks strikes me as misogynic in nature, it also seems to pave the way for what could be, a very interesting arc for Yuna. Her past being obscured makes her interesting but she is my favorite character because she tries so hard to emotionally compose herself and prove her worth as she’s surrounded by a society that’s male-dominant (or seems to be). In essence, she breaks the rules, but believes in following them (she takes off her mask as a sign of individuality, but she still follows the signs of the stars and doesn’t seem to be ashamed of her femininity.) The show so far seems to lead her on with Ryoha, which was definitely surprising to me, as I thought it would be usual to pair the first female lead with the main male protagonist. We’ll see eventually….

Either way, next week seems to bring some answers to the main plot, and the appearance of a “Gold Saint” so I’m excited to see where this goes!
