Black Friday is for amateurs! Yeah, that’s right. The true deal hunter has nothing to do with the commercialism and phoniness that is the biggest shopping day in America. Why would I want to stay up all night and wait in a ridiculously long line when it’s 25 degrees outside only to end up literally fighting with the dregs of society over some product of which the store only has 5 in stock? It takes more patience than I have to deal with that commotion. Look at that pic above. That’s not how a sophisticated deal hunter rolls. We slip in under the radar. We get a deal while the person standing next to us pays full retail. I’ll do my shopping online thank you very much. Ever hear of Cyber Monday? There’s no lines at my computer desk. So if I see any really amazing deals in the next few days I’ll post about them here or probably first on the ROC Coupons Twitter page.

Topshop makes your Christmas wishes come true this year: The high street giant’s latest venture, Dress Me Up, allows shoppers to steal a star’s style for a day by hiring dresses from their wardrobe.

Launching today, Dress Me Up will be in Topshop’s flagship Oxford Street store until December 6th for you to try things on for size before its official launch on 7th December, running through until the 23rd.

During the hire period, you can grab Kate Moss’ beaded Lanvin dress, Freida Pinto’s pale yellow Burberry Prorsum number, Scarlett Johansson’s Nanette Lepore animal print mini, Peaches Geldof’s floral floor-length Dolce & Gabbana gown, Dita Von Teese’s blue evening dress by Jayson Brundson, and one of Nicola Robert’s bespoke costumes from the latest Girls Aloud tour, among a rialfull of others. But that’s not the best part: Hiring a dress costs a mere £40. And, if after wearing your favourite dress you can’t bare to see it go, you’ve got the chance to own it forever as it falls into auction, with proceeds going to Age Concern and Help the Aged.

“Having worked with Topshop for so long, we didn’t think twice about donating our dress. It’s such a great cause, especially at this time of year,” Emma Cook told Vogue UK. “The combination of being able to help support Age Concern and Help the Aged and the chance for someone to wear our dress that wouldn’t ordinarily be able to afford to, is such a fantastic concept.”

Mmmm, Turkey

What writer (notice I don’t say “blogger”, more on that in a later post) doesn’t write something, anything, on holidays?  And most of all Thanksgiving??  It’s so easy – the parameters are already laid out for you!  What are you thankful for, Turkey-Day traditions, etc.

It’s my least favorite part of this holiday.  Back when the blogosphere (yeah, I said the word) was filled with unique and talented individuals who I admired and bookmarked to read almost daily (not 15 year old “vloggers” talking about sex and The Hills), Thanksgiving was the one day I skipped out.  “I’m thankful for my family…” “I’m thankful for my friends…”  “I’m thankful for my job…” “…my house…” “…my stretchy jeans…” … it’s all so rehearsed, contrived, manufactured… (yes I know they’re all synonyms, I just like to get repetitive when I’m making a point).

And that point is, I’m tired of hearing people say what they think they’re supposed to say about things they’re thankful for – and really, you should be thankful for these things every day, not just Thanksgiving.  Especially stretchy jeans.

I do think about things I’m thankful for on Thanksgiving, but it’s more of an appreciate-the-small-things day for me.  After all, there are days when it seems like I don’t have a single thing to be thankful for, and those are the times when it is most important to remember the immense pleasure to be gained from the smallest of moments.  Like buying new coffee cups with whimsical designs, and the next morning sitting down to a steaming cup of Nantucket Blend coffee on the front porch with a brisk breeze blowing.

Like reading a really great book that’s L-O-N-G, thus postponing that lost feeling that occurs when you read the last page of an excellent book and then think “Well… where do I go from here?”

Like finding a $50 necklace on sale for $14.99 and then marked down an extra 20%.  Now that is something to be thankful for.

Oh, you think I’m materialistic now, no?  Consider, though… it’s not about the cups themselves, or the pages of the book, or the necklace itself… it’s about moments, created by you, for you, without the help or distraction of friends, without the aid of alcohol… without the activities that we wrap ourselves in to convince ourselves that we are, in fact, “happy”, that we have something to be thankful for.  It’s about the moments that are, against all odds, the greatest moments of your life.
