Today I was driving to work making my usual rounds along the way. I had the radio turned onto 540 AM listening to what the political pundits had to say about the Afghanistan approach, when the local news came on giving the local updates as to weather and such news. Well to no big surprise the voice announced that there was a drive by shooting at 5:30 am!!! Salinas’ (CA) 26 homicide of the year!!! 26!! Are you kidding me? No, they’re not kidding.

The city recently voted down Measure K, an approach to increase city police and try to rid our city of gang violence through a 1 cent sales tax increase. I had not intended on voting on the measure, however it was also aimed to fund the city rec centers and other positive promoting areas. So I did vote for it. And it did fail. I believe it failed not only because of the tax increase, but because the city is pessimistic of gang problem ever being resolved.

Well guess what?!?!! I’m not.

It irritates me that there’s a majority of residents that condone gang members and their activities and turn a blind eye when there’s information that is helpful to catching them and locking them up forrrever. It irritates me that residents as well as the media of this community blame the law enforcement and local government for the gang problem when these officials are trying to react and respond to the crisis itself. Some in this community blame it on lack of resources and education because of the income level being so low particularly in East Salinas where the gang problem is hot. 

I’ll tell you that the problem is not the local officials or the lack of resources and education for the most part. The problem is the mentality of parents and these kids who take the easy way out and don’t take advantage of rec centers that are free to spend the afternoon to do leisure activities until the parents get home, the Boys and Girls Club that offers art programs and other educational tools to promote self-confidence and community appreciation to these kids at a low-cost of $25 a year and if you can’t afford that, they waive the fee! Also the libraries that are readily available 7 days a week with a great selection of books, magazines and free internet for educational and other purposes,  there are financial aid programs, scholarships, and grants for those who want to attend a community college, but the easiest thing the parents and kids can CHOOSE to do… is to stop befriending and approving of the gang members that they associate with even in the slightest. It’s a difficult thing, believe me!! I KNOW!!! Especially when you have been friends since grade school or your cousins, but condoning them and that behavior is to their benefit only.  

There is no excuse to this gang violence epidemic that our city faces only the reason of pure stupidity of those partaking in the matter as well as the community who wants to defend it and make excuses for it. I am not one to judge others but I am also not one to buy into  bullshit excuses as to why a guy riding around a car with gang tattoos, wearing gang colors, blasting inciting music, and looking hard at everyone who looks at him can’t be pulled over because its racial profiling. BULL! The law enforcement and the community should make him feel like that is NOT ok. Intimidating other people is NOT right. Because guess what…. that type of activity leads to the city’s 27th homicide.

Notable artists who made the area their home include John Steinbeck, who grew up in Salinas, and lived in nearby Pacific Grove for many years as well as the city of Monterey for a very short time. Steinbeck immortalized Monterey with his novels Cannery Row, Tortilla Flat and East of Eden, and his play Of Mice and Men. Among Steinbeck’s friends were some of the city’s more colorful characters, including Ed Ricketts, a marine biologist, and Bruce Ariss, artist and theatre enthusiast who designed and built the Wharf Theater. After Rickett’s death, the new owner and a group of his friends would assemble in Rickett’s lab for drinks and Jazz music every Wednesday evening. While visiting with the group, San Francisco DJ, Jimmy Lyons, suggested holding a Jazz celebration in Monterey which eventually became the Monterey Jazz Festival.^[

A través del seguimiento de la actualidad del condejo que intentamos hacer a través de las redes sociales, hemos podido comprobar que este es uno de los temás que más controversia y debate suscita entre nuestros amigos en internet. Unos defendiendo las bondades del proyecto y los bebeficios que ofrecerá a los usuarios (habituales y futuros), y otros recordando con nostalgia el entorno que vivieron durante tantos años y del que guardan gratos recuerdos

A lo largo de la historia, y a distintos niveles, este debate se ha venido produciendo desde hace muchísimo tiempo.  Desde la Torre Eiffel de París al Cobi de Barcelona 92, pasando por la ampliación del Museo Reina Sofía de Madrid y el Elogio del Horizonte de Gijón…

Este asunto ha acabado por politizarse, atribuyendo a los sectores más conservadores la posición crítica hacia el proyecto, mientras que desde sectores más progresistas se aboga por la modernización y hasta una democratización del entormo. Pero seguro que esto también es inevitable.

Para intentar salir de dudas, os dejamos con unas fotos del “antes” y del proyecto de “después” para que los que aún no tengáis las referencias, y con una encuesta para cuantificar vuestra opinión.

O verão vem aí (começa dia 21 de dezembro), mas a primavera já está dando uma amostra de como será a estação mais quente do ano! Calor, calor, e chuva a tarde claro!! E muitas mulheres aguardam essa estação para irem à praia, à piscina, pegar aquele bronze!!! Então resolvi fazer um Especial de Verão! Em breve vou escrever sobre os biquínis e afins!! Mas o primeiro post é para as chamadas “saídas de praia”.

Pagaza piconegra (Gelochelidon nilotica)

De hábitos bastante ligados a los humedales continentales, la pagaza piconegra frecuenta marismas, salinas, lagunas salobres interiores y embalses. Afirma Víctor Gil Ramírez que está ampliamente extendida por todo el mundo, su distribución es no obstante bastante puntual, y se encuentra sometida a fluctuaciones consecuentes a las alteraciones de sus lugares de reproducción.

My local camera club, Photographic Society of Orange County, took a trip to Monterey California last month. At the club meeting, we can show only four photos from our field trip. Wow. I gave myself an hour tonight.  I had no place to be, no person to see, and school has already taken a backseat for the quarter.  After coffee with a dear friend, I gave myself an hour.  I headed south on hwy 1.  It was around 18.45, and dark.  I was able to forget where I was, and pretend that I was 375 mi north, on the same highway.  Ignoring cruisers and streetlights, it actually felt like I was back.  Turning onto the 133 sent a quiver down my spine.  The same motions as the 152 headed to the foot of her greatness, I listened to a kitten’s “On The Road To Find Out.”  Should I be driving a VW right now? I’m not, I’m driving a 1973 2002 BMW, with white leather interior and hub caps that match the gelb color of its body.  I am conveniently wearing a scarf of fine craftsmanship, driving gloves to match.  I hear the wind pass through the oak trees that line the rolling hills in the valley.  Flashing lights ahead?  There’s no metropolis in Salinas Valley.  I fade back to reality, the 405 is in gridlock.  I downshift, sigh, roll up my windows.  I guess it’s time to switch to Autechre….

On Wednesday, November 11, 2009, from 7:00 to 9:30pm Hostos Community College will host a tribute to Dr. Evelina López Antonetty (Salinas, Puerto Rico, 1922), also known as Mother of the South Bronx, to celebrate her life and work on the 25^th anniversary of her death. This tribute will gather all those who were touched in some way by López Antonetty’s work and legacy. Participating speakers and performers include poet Tato LaViera and the music of Yomo Toro & Zon del Barrio. The Hostos Community College Theater is located at 475 Grand Concourse in Manhattan, New York (free tickets available at the box office). For more information, you may call (718) 993-0909.

At age ten, López Antonetty arrived alone in New York City in 1933 aboard the ship El Ponce. She went to live with her aunt in Spanish Harlem. Courageous and quick to note injustices, she soon “became a spokesperson for her neighbors, often helping them resolve problems with their landlords and city agencies.” She developed into a formidable activist and community leader.

She began as an organizer and job-developer for District 65, a militant union that organized small shops.  She was instrumental in bringing in more than 4,000 Spanish-speaking members into the union and led its Spanish Affairs Committee. She lobbied for the development of the Head Start programs and later became the supervisor of the first Head Start center in New York. She organized the Bronx for the Lindsay administration under the Puerto Rican Community Development Project. There she found herself listening to the cries of confused parents whose children were tested in English, then placed in mental development classes for slow or impaired students.  She helped change educational policies. Among her many projects, López Antonetty was the founder  in 1965 of United Bronx Parents, Inc., a grassroots organization dedicated to community development in the South Bronx area with special emphasis on educational reform. She remained the UBP’s executive director until her death in 1984.

 In a commemorative service in 1985, Aurora Flores summed up what López Antonetty meant to the community: Mujer, compañera, luchadora . . .  ¡MADRE! Evelina López Antonetty sparked energy, strength, and courage into these words, standing out as woman, mother, and champion of the Puerto Rican community. She was the biological mother of three; the grandmother of five; the inspirational mother of the young Latino leadership; the mother of mothers who found themselves in a strange, cold land whose language was both harsh to their ears and confusing to their minds.  She was the mother of the civil rights movement, huddling her diverse children of many hues in the bosom of her solidarity; the mother of the South Bronx, giving birth (after a long, hard labor) to United Bronx Parents, Inc.; the mother of our roots; and, with all the fury of a lioness protecting her young, Evelina López Antonetty was a mother to those who would oppose this frontline fighter for freedom, dignity and unity among all people.

Since the KDON TV spots got such a good reception (several posts below, you can’t miss the 80s hair) … I thought I’d also give you a little taste of what I sounded like back then.

That was a job I don’t know if I ever would have left, but the station was sold and after three years that was it for me … now the station is one link in the massive Clear Channel chain.

One of the bad things about life is that sometime you don’t really realize how good you have it … until you don’t.

Born in Monterey CA, and raised in Salinas (CA), Auggie moved to Stoke-on-Trent late August looking for a place he can call a temperamental home.

Back in Central California, or ‘Cen-Cal’ as he would put it, Auggie was left to survive independently by the age of twelve, along with his brother and sister in an apartment in Salinas. Since then, he’s had his own apartments, two cars, worked at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, Starbucks and been a manager at Blockbuster. He’s also lived in San Jose and Santa Cruz. Auggie has become a certified dental assistant, and plans on becoming a dental hygienist by the time he’s back in California.

I met Auggie through Abs Hale, a good friend who also studies at Staffordshire University. My house has become a second home for him, saving him from pricey taxi journeys up to Newstead after nights out. He’s been staying here for the last week as his house is currently empty. Many early morning hours have been spent trying to beat Halo 3: ODST, or chatting to our Belgium friend Marie on Skype.

Due to financial problems, Auggie is looking to returning to California late January 2010. In my opinion, he’s almost made a completely new life in Stoke, he’s had everything but a job. His departure will have a great impact on our friendship circle since he was there with us from the start. Though all is not lost, plans on living in Cen-Cal for a year are already starting to build.
