In an attempt to project an image of “old curmudgeon,” I thought about starting this article with the phrase “I don’t really understand all the fuss about this Twilight movie thing…” but realized that I actually do understand all the fuss. Sure, the trailers for the movie look like ads for Abercrombie & Fitch, with the obligatory topless young kouroi flaunting their six-pack abs and genetically enhanced dentition, but in our glossy celebrity-focused culture, this is par for the course.

The majority of Twilight fans are either teenage girls or moms reliving their teenage years, and ogling attractive young men in various stages of undress is hardly abnormal. It’s no different from my watching the spectacularly bad Bandidas (2006) solely because it has Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz, or sitting through the vapidly banal Barb Wire (1986) just to marvel at the gravity-defying qualities of Pamela Anderson Lee’s frontage.

The other element that makes the New Moon movie so appealing is the presence of male vampires. Without going into an extended psychoanalytical thesis, all you need to know is that as far as women are concerned, vampires are HOT. And by “hot,” I mean sexually charged and erotic. Although I’m acutely aware that feminists may hate me for saying this, a woman can get the chills thinking of being dominated by some dark, handsome vampire whose intentions are less than honorable and who are quite happy to use their sexual charisma (something vampires appear to have in spades) to take their wicked pleasures.

Anyone who actually does want to read a thesis on sexuality and vampires should pop out and buy a copy of the deliciously decadent romp by Camille Paglia called Sexual Persona. Ms. Paglia takes on the whole of western art and uses a psycho-sexual knife to pare it down to its roots – which turns out to be shockingly erotic and so mired in sex that a walk through the masterpieces in the National Gallery of Art in Washington turns out to be no different from an afternoon in a back-street porno theater with a bucket of buttery popcorn. Admittedly she spend more time talking about the notion of the female vampire or “femme fatale,” but to connection between vampirism and sexuality is explicit.

So anyone claiming they “don’t understand what all the fuss is about” is either woefully unable to understand women or lying just so they can seem to be intellectually aloof. And anyone pretending that they’re watching the movie for Oscar-winning performances by giants in the field of acting is simply suffering from the American disease called Puritanism. As a friend of mine told me many years ago, “America was founded by Puritans – and it still shows!” I’m with H.L. Mencken when he says that Puritanism is “the haunting fear that someone, somewhere is having a good time.”

As to understanding the word itself, vampire - or vampyr - is of Slavic origin. It exists in Czech, Polish, Russian, and Serb, as well as vapir and vepir in Bulgarian and vepyr in Ruthenian. Other variations include vopyr, opyr, upir, upyr and upior. The OED defines one as follows:

A preternatural being of a malignant nature (in the original and usual form of the belief, a reanimated corpse), supposed to seek nourishment, or do harm, by sucking the blood of sleeping persons; a man or woman abnormally endowed with such habits. (OED, Vol.XIX, p.422)

In 1796, the word is used in something called the Harleian Miscellany. The full – and well-worth repeating – title is Harleian Miscellany: A collection of scarce, curious, and entertaining pamphlets and tracts, as well in manuscript as in print, found in the late (Edmund Harley, second) Earl of Oxford’s library. Sounds like a forerunner of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. In the relevant passage, the writer says, “These Vampyres are supposed to be the Bodies of Deceased Persons, animated by evil Spirits, which come out of the Graves, in the Night-time, suck the Blood of many of the Living, and thereby destroy them.”

By 1813, the vampire had become a thing literary comment, with Lord Byron including the following sentence in his poem, The Giaour; “The freshness of the face, the wetness of the lips with blood, are the never-failing signs of a Vampire.” Interestingly, Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote the poem Christabel in 1797 (with the second part in 1800 and the third part never appearing), which is clearly about a female vampire but without the word actually being used.

The publishing of Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1897 marked the birth of the “modern” vampire, who is male, urbane, and a Romantic figure. Rather than being an ugly, evil, tortured spirit, the modern vampire is more along the lines of being “Mad, bad, and dangerous to know.” By the end of the 20th century, thanks to the writing of such authors as Anne Rice and the Hollywood movie machine, vampires had become romantically heroic. There’s even a whole sub-culture (or sub-cultures) of people who are convinced that (a) vampires are real and (b) they are vampires!. By extending the metaphor of sucking blood, the word vampire has also come to be used to describe “A person of a malignant and loathsome character, esp. one who preys ruthlessly upon others; a vile or cruel extractor or extortioner.” (ibid. 422)

The word can also undergo inflections: vampiric and vampirish are used to described someone as having the nature of a vampire; vampiredom means the state of being a vampire; and vampirism is the collective facts or ideas associated with the world of vampires.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a shortened form of the word, vamp, was used to describe, “A woman who intentionally attracts and exploits men; an adventuress; a Jezebel; freq. as a stock character in plays and films.” (OED, Vol. XIX, p.421). Note that this is NOT the same as the word vamp used to describe the part of the shoe or hose (stocking/sock) that covers the front of the foot. That word derives from the Old French avanpie, which in turn comes from avan(t)=before + pié=foot. It’s a great example of where two words appear to come from the same root but, in fact, don’t. This is sometimes referred to as a false cognate.

I won’t be going to see New Moon. There are only so many hours left in my life and spending two of them watching fantasy teenage angst seems a little bit of a waste. Now, where’s my Tomb Raider DVD…?

Yo tenía mis dudas sobre si 2012 de Roland Emmerich iba a ser un éxito en taquilla, pero lo ha sido a nivel mundial, más de 200 millones en todo el mundo en su primer fin de semana, haciendo sólo en Estados Unidos más de 65 millones. Así que no podemos negar el éxito de la película que retrata el fin del mundo, y que yo me muero de ganas por ver, y que todavía no he podido. De todas formas, está claro que la próxima semana estas cifras se igualarán o se aumentarán (esta última opción la más factible) por la saga Crepúsculo: Luna Nueva, que se estrena hoy en España, y el viernes en el resto del mundo.

Dejando las recaudaciones, es hora de hablar de dos 4 partes en marcha. Una muy clara y la otra aunque se lleva diciendo desde hace tiempo, hasta que no la vea no me lo creo. Estaba claro de la existencia de Spiderman 4. Hay muchos rumores sobre los villanos a los que se enfrentará el héroe. El rumor que ha saltado últimamente es que habrán varios malos, y uno podría ser La gata negra, personaje al que opta Rachel McAdams (El Diario de Noa, Vuelo Nocturno). Y la otra es, atención, Scream 4. Mi saga de terror favorita vuelve a la carga, no con una 4 película, sino que con una trilogía entera (o sea, 4, 5 y 6) si sigue teniendo éxito. Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox y David Arquette repiten.

No puedo seguir sin decir esta curiosidad, habrá un cameo en la película del Equipo A de uno de los miembros de la banda de la popular serie. El actor Dwight Schultz (Murdock), aparecerá en la película haciendo un cameo. Recordar que la película, está protagonizada por Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Biel y Sharlto Copely (que interpreta a Murdock).

Antes de que se estrene su nueva cinta (Invictus), Clint Eastwood ya está rodando la siguiente, se trata de Hereafter, que se ha descrito como una película con elementos sobrenaturales, y estará protagonizada (al igual que Invictus) por Matt Damon.

El nuevo proyecto de Andy García como director es un biopic sobre Hemingway al que Anthony Hopkins, le dará vida. El propio García y Annette Bening le acompañan en la cinta que se llamará “Hemingway and Fuentes”.

El spin off se Shrek ya tiene fecha de estreno. En noviembre de 2011, El gato con botas verá la luz. La cinta protagonizada por el personaje salido de Shrek contará con la voz original de la saga, Antonio Banderas, al que le acompañará Salma Hayek.

Y por último, si empezamos con Roland Emmerich, vamos acabar con él, y con una noticia sorprendente. Anuncia que quiere hacer no una segunda parte, sino una tercera también de Independence Day. ¿Cómo os quedáis?

CNN’s Anderson Cooper will be host of “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute.”

CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute” returns to the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Thanksgiving night, as the network celebrates its third year of honoring everyday people making a difference.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper hosts the star-studded gala, which will be seen around the world on November 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the global networks of CNN.

 

The telecast shines a spotlight on the extraordinary accomplishments of the Top 10 CNN Heroes, who were selected by a distinguished Blue Ribbon Panel. Each of this year’s honorees will receive $25,000 in recognition of their work.

The show culminates with the announcement of the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year, who will receive an additional $100,000. Voting to select the Hero of the Year is being conducted through an online poll at CNN.com/Heroes, ending November 19 (6 a.m. ET)

Performers and presenters scheduled to appear at this year’s tribute show will be announced in the coming weeks.

Last year’s show included appearances by Hugh Jackman, Salma Hayek, Cameron Diaz, Forest Whitaker, Meg Ryan, Terrence Howard, Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale and Lucy Liu, with performances by Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys and John Legend.

Since February, profiles of 2009 CNN Heroes have been airing weekly on air and online, each chosen from nominations submitted through the CNN Heroes Web site. This year, more than 9,000 nominations were received, more than twice the number of nominations submitted in 2008.

The Kodak Theatre is best known as the first permanent home of the Academy Awards.

Nov 13, 2009 – The renowned Asian Media Personality Sandeep Marwah, the President of Marwah Studios has been honored at 33rd Cairo International Film Festival and has been introduced to the World Cinema and its fraternity as the producer of largest number of short films in the World and President of one of the most successful film schools of the World.

Established since 1976, the Cairo International Film Festival is classified as a category “A” festival as recognized by the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producer’s Associations) and is undoubtedly the oldest and most important festival in the Middle East and has been an inspiration to several other budding festivals.

This year the CIFF has acknowledged  its honored tradition and welcome the new generation of brilliant filmmakers from India by honoring Indian Cinema. The festival is from 10th to 20th November in Cairo and has been  attended , by the whos who of cinema World including Salma Hayek, Samuel L. Jackson, Lucy Liu and Tom Berenger, who is also a member on the international jury.

The film Cirque du Freak is based on the first three books of a young adult series called The Saga of Darren Shan or alternately, Cirque du Freak.  It is unfortunate that this film comes after several vampire movies and TV series because I am sure vampire fatigue will make some people dismiss it. That would be a mistake because Cirque du Freak isn’t annoyingly angsty and any love story is secondary to the plot. It is grittier, darker, and surprisingly fun.

I have not read any of the Cirque du Freak books, so I didn’t go see this movie with preconceived notions about what I thought I should see. I enjoyed The Vampire’s Assistant. It has lots of dark humor, seriously scary moments, and blessedly few cheesy ones (a graveyard pinball scene comes to mind).  The casting is pretty much perfect except for Mr. Crepsley. He was supposedly converted into a vampire when he was 20 years old but the actor, John C. Reilly, is clearly in his forties. Weren’t vampires supposed to look the same as when they died? This may be explained in the books, but not in the film. Overlooking that detail, Reilly does a great job as Mr. Crepsley. The circus freaks were wonderfully done by several brilliant actors, and it is a pity we didn’t get to see more of them. The only freaks I thought looked truly fake were the CGI creatures that look like mini-druids.

Darren Shan, the titular vampire’s assistant, lives in a suburban neighborhood where people dress in pastel and khaki, and absolutely no freaks are allowed. He is a straight A student and all-around good kid. His best friend Steve continuously gets him in trouble, so Darren’s parents forbid him to hang out with Steve. Still, Darren rebels and continues to see him anyways. They go to a Cirque du Freak show recently come to town and that’s where the trouble begins. From suburban teens, they end up becoming enmeshed in a war between Vampires and the Vampaneze.  The main difference between these two factions is that the Vampaneze feed off humans and kill them, while the Vampires don’t kill anyone they feed on. Darren and Steve become pawns of a Mr. Tiny, a character that at first reminded me of Fringe’s Observer, only this guy is truly evil and instead of just observing is an enthusiastic participant and instigator of the Vampire/Vampaneze war. (When I looked up the actor, Michael Cerveris, I discovered that hey, he was Fringe’s Observer with lots of prosthetic makeup. D’oh! I guess he’s been typecast.)

Salma Hayek plays the part of Madame Truska,  the Bearded Lady, who gets visions that she can’t remember. Her character has a romantic relationship with Mr. Crepsley and besides providing him support and blurting out random visions (and showing off her cleavage) doesn’t have much to do. This is very disappointing for an actress of Salma’s caliber. I am hoping that she chose this role because of the strong potential for sequels and that the character of Madame Truska will become more important in future installments. Come to think of it, all the female characters could do with more independence and strength and not be there for the sole comfort of males, offering up blood (or body parts) for consumption. Since The Vampire’s Assistant is clearly set up for at least one sequel, I hope things change for all the ladies, including Madame Truska.

Columbia Pictures has launched the official website and trailer for new movie Grown Ups from You Don’t Mess with the Zohan director Dennis Dugan.

The new comedy stars Adam Sandler and tell the story of five friends and former team-mates who reunite years later to honour the passing of their childhood basketball coach. With their wives and kids in tow, they spend the Fourth of July holiday weekend together at the lake house where they celebrated their championship years earlier. They all very quickly find themselves reverting to childhood ways.

The movie marks Dugan’s fourth time as director of an Adam Sandler vehicle, after The Benchwarmers, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry and Zohan, but he has appeared onscreen in many other Sandler flicks dating back to Happy Gilmore. Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, and David Spade are all onboard, in addition to Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, and Maya Rudolph. So there’s plenty of comedy talent available, even if some of that resides deep within Spade.

I’m holding out hope, against all evidence to the contrary that Sandler can rediscover his Happy Gilmore/Big Daddy form. Whether good or bad, expect to see the movie around July 2010.

Sorti en 1998, ce film d’horreur curieux et très divertissant mérite d’être revisité à plusieurs titres. D’une part de par son réalisateur, Robert Rodriguez, d’autre part par sa floppée de bons acteurs et actrices qui y sont mis en scène.
Commençons par Robert Rodriguez.  Si à la fin des années 90, ce nom n’était pas nécessairement très connu du grand public, on peut dire que sa carrière a connu un véritable coup d’accélérateur depuis sa trilogie des Spy Kids, davantage destinée au jeune public, puis en 2005 avec la sortie du surprenant et très esthétique Sin City, (Jessica Alba, Benicio Del Toro, Mickey Rourke, Rutger Hauer…), et surtout par l’avènement en 2007 de Planet Terror, film de genre entremêlant joyeusement science-fiction, horreur et action ! Un vrai régal !

Dans “The Faculty”, notre ami Rodriguez met en scène une bande de joyeux teenagers turbulents, aux qualités et motivations différentes, mais qui se retrouveront vite confrontés au même problème : à savoir la prise de contrôle d’un lycée et de son campus par une entité extraterrestre dont la particularité est de s’introduire dans les corps pour en prendre possession ! Film à la base destiné à un adulte adolescent, marchant sur les plates-bandes des “Scream”, “Urban Legend” et autres “Souviens-toi l’été dernier”, construit selon une trame classique et sans surprise,  “The Faculty” mérite quand même le coup d’oeil. Avec à la baguette la ravissante (mais alors, très ravissante !) Jordana Brewster, jolie brune qui tiendra l’affiche quelques années plus tard dans l’extraordinaire remake de “Massacre à la Tronçonneuse” de Jonathan Liebesmann (2006), et le fort dévergondé et amical Josh Harnett (que Rodriguez fera jouer dans “Sin City” évoqué plus haut), on adhère rapidement à ce film dont les personnages haut en couleur et quasi caricaturaux, à eux seuls, sont un véritable bonheur ! On citera pêle-même le professeur de sport campé par un Robert Patrick (le fameux T1000 du “Terminator 2″) décidemment très en forme, véritable esclavagiste envers ses élèves quand il s’agit de les faire courir autour d’une piste ; ou Salma Hayek (est-il encore nécessaire de présenter cette sexbombe latine ?!) en infirmière perpétuellement enrhumée ; ou la délicieuse Famke Jenssen (“X-Men”, “Nip/Tuck”) en jeune professeur timide et prude.  Et on relèvera surtout la présence du sympathique Elijah Wood, qui rencontrera la consécration mondiale dans la trilogie du “Seigneur des Anneaux” quelques temps plus tard !

Effets spéciaux de la méchante bestiole extraterrestre réussis, intrigue séduisante (écrite par Kevin Williamson, auteur également de “Scream”, la référence !), acteurs jeunes (quasi débutant pour certains) et très impliqués, humour prégnant, tout concourt à faire de “The faculty” un petit film d’horreur digne d’une bonne vidéothèque de genre.

A découvrir ou à revoir, c’est selon !

It’s fall – almost winter by now, no wonder that the best known ladies took their new boots out of their wardrobe and appeared on the red carpet wearing them.

What might be new this season is that it seems to be okay to wear boots with LBDs – just like Balmain encouraged the fashionistas in their shows. You might remember the premiere of “This is it”: almost everyone showed up wearing boots. In my opinion, JLo totally rocked that evening:

Of course the trend didn’t stop there, we could see plenty of boots at the MTV EMA in Berlin. I’d say the boots of Asia are the most amazing, but one thing is for sure: it’s okay again to wear sexy boots on the red carpet!

Last but surely not least, my favorite item this season so far:

How amazing does it look?! I had the opportunity to see these ankle boots worn in person, they do wonders to the owner’s appearance!

Like every boy coaxing a moustache to grow knows, the more you shave the more your hair grows. Salma Hayek recently admitted that the moustache she grew for her role as Frida Kahlo in 2002 keeps growing back.

Rather than wear a fake moustache, Salma shaved her upper lip regularly to encourage the growth. It worked.

“Now I’m all messed up, because in real life, I have a moustache if I don’t wax. When I get older, I’m probably going to look like Pancho Villa,” said Hayek.

We’re reminded of the Italian phrase: Donna Bafuta, sempre piacutta, meaning basically, that a beautiful woman isn’t less so just because she grows a mo.

Por alguna razón no me molesta que de la cansada trilogía de Shreck, salga una nueva película basada en uno de sus personajes: el gato con botas. Ya están escribiendo una historia que relataría por todo lo que paso el lindo personaje antes de conocer al ogro. Antonio Banderas volvería a darle voz al gato, pero ésta vez acompañado de la sabrosa Salma Hayek y Zach Galifianakis como Humpty Dumpty.
