Saat waktu senggang, di sela-sela tumpukan pekerjaan yang menguras pikiran, aku tidak sengaja membuka-buka folder fotoku di laptop. Di antara banyak folder, pandanganku terpaku pada folder Asrama Salman. Ya, folder itu memuat foto-fotoku saat bersama teman-teman di Asrama Salman. Senangnya, membangun kembali gambaran kehidupan di asrama lewat ingatan dan bantuan sebuah foto.

Aku tinggal di Asrama Salman mulai tahun keduaku di ITB, yaitu tahun 2005. Saat itu tujuanku ada dua: dekat dengan masjid dan berbaur dengan berbagai komunitas di sana. Itu karena tahun pertamaku di ITB sebagian besar kuhabiskan hanya untuk aktivitas akademik. Aku merasa, tidak lengkap rasanya kuliah di kampus hanya untuk belajar di kelas atau di lab. Aku juga saat itu masih ingat pesan guru ngajiku waktu SMA. Katanya, di mana pun aku berada, dekatlah dengan masjid. Akhirnya, bulatlah keputusanku untuk tinggal di sana, walaupun saat itu orang tuaku tidak begitu setuju karena berbagai alasan. Setelah melalui berbagai tahap seleksi, mulai dari seleksi berkas, wawancara, psikotes, group discussion, dan sebagainya, akhirnya aku bisa lulus juga dan mulai tinggal di sana menjelang bulan Ramadhan.

Saat itu aku tinggal sekamar dengan 2 orang lainnya: Rihan dan Januar. Dua-duanya adalah orang paling cemerlang yang aku kenal saat itu. Sampai sekarang pun, mereka tengah meniti karirnya masing-masing yang menurutku sangat cerah Rihan kini sedang menempuh training di Texas, USA. Ia bekerja untuk salah satu perusahaan oil service multinasional. Januar kini bekerja di oil company yang menduduki peringkat empat Fortune 500 companies tahun ini.

Saat itu aku juga tinggal dengan Kang Asep, yang kini sedang menempuh karirnya sebagai seorang engineer. Kang Asep menggantikan Januar yang dipindah ke kamar lain karena menurut pembina saat itu, aku, Rihan, dan Januar terlalu seragam, entah dari sisi apanya. Kang Asep adalah orang yang sangat ceria dan hangat. Dia juga koki yang sangat diandalkan di asrama. Kalau ada Kang Asep, kami sering sekali makan sama-sama masakannya. Aku memanggilnya Kang Asep karena kami sama-sama orang Sunda, apalagi logat Sunda Kang Asep sangat kental

Setiap semester kami berpindah untuk tinggal dengan penghuni kamar yang lain. Dengan demikian, aku punya banyak kesempatan untuk mengenal berbagai karakter teman-temanku dengan pemikiran dan impiannya masing-masing.

Aku pernah sekamar dengan Agun, yang juga rekan kerjaku di Keluarga Mahasiswa Islam ITB. Agun saat itu mengepalai bidang ekonomi, sementara aku bidang media. Kini, Agun bersama teman-temannya mulai merealisasikan salah satu mimpinya dengan membangun usaha di bidang pendidikan.

Saat itu aku juga tinggal sekamar dengan Arya, dia beda satu angkatan di bawahku. Kini, Arya sedang fokus untuk menyelesaikan tugas akhirnya di kampus, setelah selesai menuntaskan tanggung jawabnya sebagai Ketua Himpunan Mahasiswa Matematika ITB.

Selanjutnya, aku sekamar dengan Rei dan Faiz. Rei kini tengah menyelesaikan program master di bidang perminyakan dan Faiz kini juga bekerja di salah satu oil company. Faiz dulu aktif sekali sebagai pembina untuk anak-anak TK dan SD di Masjid Salman. Karena itu, aku sering memanggilnya Kak Faiz

Terakhir, aku sekamar dengan Abdur. Kini Abdur sedang menempuh jalannya untuk melanjutkan studi S2 di Jepang, menyusul istrinya yang sudah mulai kuliah di sana. Abdur kami kenal sebagai orang yang begitu dekat dengan AlQuran. Alhamdulillah, aku banyak belajar dari Abdur, mulai dari tahsin–cara membaca AlQuran yang benar–, sampai diskusi mengenai banyak hal yang sangat bermakna buat kehidupan. Abdur kini juga masih mengaktualisasikan dirinya di Asrama Salman sebagai pembina di tengah berbagai kesibukannya yang lain. Karena aku selalu menganggapnya kakak, aku memanggilnya Kak Abdur

Pengalamanku dengan mereka telah memberikan bekas yang sangat berarti buat hidupku. Karakter-karakter mereka yang berlainan sedikit banyak telah mempengaruhi caraku dalam berpikir dan bersikap. Begitulah, menurutku, bagaimana seharusnya berteman. Kami saling melengkapi, saling mendukung untuk mencapai cita-cita masing-masing, dan saling mengingatkan.

Kami pernah tinggal bersama satu atap, shalat shubuh berjamaah dalam satu shaf, mendengarkan inspirasi dari berbagai tokoh, berbagi cerita, hingga pada akhirnya kami berpisah menempuh jalan kami masing-masing.

Aku percaya, jauh di dalam hati, kami masih menyimpan satu impian bersama yang mungkin saat ini belum terlihat–belum punya bentuk dan makna yang sama dalam konstruksi pikiran kami masing-masing. Tapi aku selalu berdoa agar kami kembali ke tempat yang sama pada akhirnya.

Salman, the son of Islam from the children of Adam

This is the story of the pious, mystic, Faqhi, intellectual and ascetic, Salman the Persian. He grew up in the town of Isfahan in Persia, in the village of Jayyan. His father was the Dihqan (chief) of the village. He was the richest person there and had the biggest house. His father loved him, more than he loved any other. As time went by, his love for Salman became so strong and overpowering that he feared to lose him or have anything happen to him. So he kept him at home, a virtual prisoner, in the same way that young girls were kept.

Salman became devoted to the Magian religion, so much so that he attained the position of custodian of the fire, which they worshipped. His duty was to see that the flames of the fire remained burning and that it did not go out for a single hour, day or night.

Salman’s father had a vast estate, which yielded an abundant supply of crops. He himself looked after the estate and gathered harvest. One day as he went about his duties as Dihqan of the village, he said to Salman, “My son, as you see, I am too busy to go out to the estate now. Go and look after matters there for me today.”

On the way to the estate, Salman passed a Christian church and heard voices raised in prayer, which attracted his attention. He did not know anything about Christianity or, for that matter, about the followers of any other religion. His father had kept him in the house away from people. When he heard the voices of the Christians, he entered the church to see what they were doing. He was impressed by their manner of praying and felt drawn to their religion. He said, “This religion is better than ours. I shall not leave them until the sunsets.”

Salman’s inclination to Christianity

Salman asked and was told that the Christian religion originated in Syria. He did not go to his father’s estate that day and at night, he returned home. His father met him and asked where he had been. Salman told him about his meeting with the Christians and how he was impressed by their religion. His father was dismayed and said: “My son, their is nothing good in that religion. Your religion and the religion of your forefathers is better.”

“No, their religion is better than ours,” he insisted. His father became upset and afraid that Salman would leave their religion. So he kept Salman locked up in the house and shackled his feet. Salman managed to send a message to the Christians, asking them to inform him of any caravans going to Syria. Before long they contacted him with the information he wanted. He broke the fetters and escaped his father’s estate to join the caravan to Syria. When he reached Syria, he asked regarding the leading person in the Christian religion and was directed to the bishop of the church. He went up to him and said: “I want to become a Christian and would like to attach myself to your service, learn from you and pray with you.”

The bishop agreed and Salman entered the church in his service. Salman soon found out, however, that the bishop was corrupt. He would order his followers to give money in charity while holding out the promise of blessings to them. When they gave the bishop anything to spend in the way of Allah, he would hoard it for himself and not give anything to the poor or needy. In this way, he amassed a vast quantity of gold. When the bishop died and the Christians gathered to bury him, Salman told them of his corrupt practices and, at their request, showed them where the bishop had kept their donations. When they saw the large jars filled with gold and silver they said, “By God, we shall not bury him.” They nailed him on a cross and threw stones at him. Not long after, the local people appointed another man in place of the first. Salman stayed on, in the service of this person who replaced him. The new bishop was an ascetic who longed for the Hereafter and engaged in worship day and night. Salman was devoted to him and spent much of the time in his company.

Before he passed away, Salman said to him, “O so and so Priest! The time has come for you to witness God’s decision (meaning death). I swear by God, I have never adored anyone as much as I have adored you! So what would you instruct me to do? And who can you recommend for me to see?”

He replied, “O son! I do not know of anyone except for a certain man living in the city of Mosul. Go to him, for you will find that he is similar to me.”

A short while after he passed away, Salman arrived at Mosul and found the priest he had been sent to, and indeed, he was very much like the one before him in terms of simplicity and striving. After he passed away, Salman was referred to another priest who in turn sent him to a priest in Ammuriyah (Ameria, near Rome), before his demise. Salman stayed by this Roman priest, and decided to make a living. Eventually hemanaged to acquire some sheep and cows.

When his death was near, Salman told him of my story and asked him for his advice just as he had asked those before him. He said: “There is nobody following our ways of life I can send you to. Nevertheless, your life seems to coincide with the era of the predestined Prophet who will arise from the Haram. His migration will be to a city full of date trees. Moreover, he will certainly have some distinct features: Between his shoulder blades, there will be the Seal of the Prophethood. He will eat food, provided it is a gift and not a donation (sadaqah). If you can reach that city, then do so, because you are very close to his era.”

Salman’s inclination to the Arabs and Islam

A group of Arab leaders from the Kalb tribe passed through Ammuriyah. Salman asked them to take him with them to the land of the Arabs, in return for whatever money he had. They agreed to take him along. When they reached Wadi al-Qura (a place between Syria and Madinah), the Arabs broke their agreement and made him a slave, then sold Salman to a Jew. Salman worked as a servant for him but he eventually sold him to a nephew of his, belonging to the tribe of Banu Qurayzah. This nephew took Salman with him to Yathrib, the city of palm groves, which is how the Christian at Ammuriyah had described it.

At that time the Prophet was inviting his people in Makkah to Islam but Salman did not know of this because of the harsh duties slavery imposed upon him. When the Prophet reached Yathrib after his hijrah from Makkah, Salman was on top of a palm tree doing some work. Salman’s master was sitting under the tree. A nephew of Salman’s master came up and said, “May God declare war on the Aws and the Khazraj (the two main Arab tribes of Yathrib). By God, they are now gathering at Quba to meet a man, who has just today, arrived from Makkah and who claims to be Prophet.”

Salman felt light-headed upon hearing these words and began to shiver so violently that he had to climb down, in fear that he may fall. He quickly swung down from the tree and spoke to his master’s nephew. “What did you say? Repeat the news for me.”

Salman’s master grew angry at this breach of protocol and struck him a terrible blow. “What does this matter to you’? Go back to what you were doing,” he shouted.

Hazrat Salman himself narrates:

I left the house for a while, making inquiries. I asked a woman I met from the city whose entire family had become Muslim. She showed me the way to the Prophet.

When it was evening, I took some food with me and went to the Prophet. The Prophet was in Quba at the time. I said, “Word has reached me that you are a very pious man, and that you have some travellers in your company. I had some charity (sadaqah) and thought that you would be most deserving of it. This is it; you may have some to eat.” The Prophet withdrew his own hand, not eating from it, but told his Companions to eat. At the time, I thought, “This is one of the characteristics my Mentor told me of.”

On my way back, I saw that the Prophet was heading to Madinah. Thus, I took the food to him, saying, “I saw that you were not eating from this charity. As a matter of fact, I presented it as a gift and not charity.” This time, the Prophet also ate with his Companions. “That makes two signs,” I thought.

Later on, I approached the Prophet as he was walking behind the corpse in a funeral. I remember that at the time, he was covered in two sheets, and that his Companions were with him.

I was trying to steal a look at the Seal on his back, when the Prophet saw me glancing. Realising that I wanted to verify what someone had told me, he let his cloak drop a little, and I managed to see that the Seal between his shoulder blades was exactly the way my Mentor had described it. I threw myself down before the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) kissing (his blessed hands/feet) and started to cry. The Holy Prophet said, “O Salman! Reveal your story.”

So I sat in front of him, relating my story to him and hoping that his Companions could also hear it. When I had finished, the Prophet said, “O Salman! Make a deal with your owner to free you.”

Consequently, my master did agree to free me, but in exchange for the following: “Three hundred date trees, as well as one thousand, six hundred silver coins.” Hence, the Sahaba (Radhiallahu anahum) helped by providing around twenty to thirty date plants each, and a tenth of every man’s land in accordance to how much he owned. The Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said to me, “Dig a hole for each date-plant. When you are finished, let me know so that I can personally fix all the date-plants into place with my own hands.” Thus, with the help of my friends, I dug holes wherever the date-plants were to be put.

Later on, the Prophet came. We stood by his side holding the plants as he fixed them into the ground. I swear by The Being Who sent the Prophet with the Truth, not a single plant died out.

Nevertheless, I still had the silver to pay. A man came to the Prophet bringing from the mines some gold which was roughly the size of a pigeon’s egg. The Prophet said, “O Salman! Take this and pay off whatever you have to.”

I replied, “O Messenger of Allah! How will this be enough for my debt?”

He said, “Allah will surely make it sufficient for your debt.”

As a result to this statement, I swear By Allah, it outweighed the one thousand, six hundred coins. I not only paid off my dues, but what I had left with me was equivalent to what I had given them.

The strict honesty of the Prophet was one of the characteristics that led Salman to believe in him and accept Islam. Salman was released from slavery by the Prophet, who paid his Jewish master a stipulated price, and who himself planted an agreed number of date palms to secure Salman’s manumission. After accepting Islam, Salman would say when asked whose son he was, “I am Salman, the son of Islam from the children of Adam.”

Salman’s role in islam

Salman was to play an important role in the struggles of the growing Muslim State. At the battle of Khandaq, he proved to be an innovator in military strategy. It was he who suggested digging a ditch or khandaq around Madinah to keep the Quraysh army at bay. When Abu Sufyan, the leader of the Makkans, saw the ditch, he said, “This stratagem has not been employed by the Arabs before.”

Salman participated in all of the other campaigns of the Prophet thereafter. He was also with Saad in the conquest of Iraq. After the grand victory, the Caliph Umar chose him because of his knowledge of the terrain, to select the land upon which Kufa was to be built.

Salman became known as ‘Salman the Good’. Salman was a scholar who lived a rough and ascetic life. He had one cloak, which he wore and slept on. He would not seek the shelter of a roof but stayed under a tree or against a wall. A man once said to him: “Shall I not build you a house in which you may live?” “I have no need of a house,” he replied. The man persisted and said; “I know the type of house that would suit you.” “Describe it to me,” said Salman. “I shall build you a house which if you stood up in, the roof would hurt your head and if you were to stretch your legs, the wall would hurt them.”

Later, as a governor of Al-Madain (Ctesiphon) near Baghdad, Salman received a stipend of five thousand dhirhams. This he would distribute as sadaqah. He lived from the work of his own hands. When some people came to Madinah and saw him working the palm groves, they said, “You are the leader here and your sustenance is guaranteed and yet you do this work?” “I like to eat from the work of my own hands,” he replied.

Salman however was not extreme in his ascetism. It is narrated by Abu Juhaifa:

“The Prophet made a bond of brotherhood between Salman and Abu Ad-Darda’. Salman paid a visit to Abu Ad-Darda’ and found Um Ad-Darda’ dressed in shabby clothes and asked her why she was in that state. She replied, “Your brother Abu Ad-Darda’ is not interested in (the luxuries of) this world.” In the meantime Abu Ad-Darda’ came and prepared a meal for Salman. Salman requested Abu Ad-Darda’ to eat (with him), but Abu Ad-Darda’ said, “I am fasting.” Salman said, “I am not going to eat unless you eat.” So, Abu Ad-Darda’ ate (with Salman). When it was night and (a part of the night passed), Abu Ad-Darda’ got up (to offer the night prayer), but Salman told him to sleep and Abu Ad-Darda’ slept. After sometime Abu Ad-Darda’ again got up but Salman told him to sleep. When it was the last hours of the night, Salman told him to get up then, and both of them offered the prayer. Salman told Abu Ad-Darda’, “Your Lord has a right on you, your soul has a right on you, and your family has a right on you; so you should give the rights of all those who has a right on you.” Abu Ad-Darda’ came to the Prophet and narrated the whole story. The Prophet said, “Salman has spoken the truth.”" (Sahih Bukhari, Book #31, Hadith #189)

Salman as a scholar

As a scholar, Salman was noted for his vast knowledge and wisdom. Ali said of him that he was like Luqman the Wise. And Kab al-Ahbar said: “Salman is bursting with knowledge and wisdom. He is an ocean that does not dry up.” Salman had knowledge of both the Christian scripture and the Quran in addition to his earlier knowledge of the Zoroastrian religion. Salman in fact translated parts of the Quran into Persian during the lifetime of the Prophet. He was thus the first person to translate the Quran into a foreign language.

According to the most reliable account, he died in either 31 or 34 A.H, at the age of 250 years, during the caliphate of Uthman, at Ctesiphon.

Narrated by Abu Huraira: “While we were sitting with the Prophet Surah Al Jumu’ah was revealed to him, and when the Verse, “And He (Allah) has sent him (Muhammad) as well as (to confer all these benefits upon) others of them, who have not already joined them: And He is exalted in Might, Wise.” (Surah Al Jumu’ah 62:3) was recited by the Prophet, I said, “Who are they, O Allah’s Apostle?” The Prophet did not reply till I repeated my question thrice. At that time, Salman Al-Farsi was with us. So Allah’s Apostle put his hand on Salman, saying, “If Faith were at (the place of) Ath-Thuraiya (pleiades, the highest star), even then (some men or man from these people (i.e. Salman’s folk) would attain it.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book #60, Hadith #420)

Who were the people of Kufa and Iraq? Who was Imaam Abu Hanifah? They were all Persians. The divinely chosen denizens of Kufa were Persians. Their spiritual teachers were Persians and so were the three about whom the Prophet said, ‘Paradise longs for three people. Ali, Amar and Salman.’ (Tirmidhi)

Time bore witness to the realisation of the Prophet words. The progeny of the Persians spread their knowledge and populated the world.

‘A’idh b. Amr reported that Abu Sufyan came to Salman, Suhaib and Bilal in the presence of a group of persons. They said: “By Allah, the sword of Allah did not reach the neck of the enemy of Allah as it was required to reach.” Thereupon Abu Bakr said: “Do you say this to the old man of the Quraish and their chief?” Then he came to Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon’him) and informed him of this. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: “Abu Bakr, you have perhaps annoyed them and if you annoyed them you have in fact annoyed your Lord.” So Abu Bakr came to them and said: “O my brothers, I have annoyed you.” They said: “No, our brother, may Allah forgive you.” (Sahih Muslim, Book #031, Hadith #6097)

The annoyance of Salman is the annoyance of Allah. Even the likes of Abu Bakr fear to offend him. This was Salman Farsi, the Persian who’s quest for the true faith lasted almost all of his 250 years of life. As Muslims and as students, it should be our point of aspiration to achieve at least some of the dedication of Salman Farsi to faith and the gaining of knowledge.

Aku sedang berpikir tentang hujan di luar ruangan ini dan halilintar yang sesekali menyapa. Pasti dingin tanpa jaket merah ini di luar. Riuh rintik hujan beradu dengan sayup ceramah ba’da Ashar yang keluar dari pengeras suara mesjid Salman. Kutengok ke kiri meja, sahabatku sedang tenggelam dalam bacaan yang memadai diri dalam mengurus sang buah hati. Tebakanku, sebentar lagi pasangan suami istri ini akan dikaruniai momongan lagi. Satu jiwa menawan yang akan menghiasi dunia dengan warnanya.Sementara di belakang, sahabatku yang lain tengah berharap reda menjelang. Hari sudah terlalu sore untuk dilalui di balik meja kerja.

Lamunanku dihentikan pintu yang terbuka. Sepasang mata imam menawarkan selaksa kebaikan. Kuterima dengan hati terbuka. Lagipula siapa yang mampu menolak kebaikan dari sang imam? Namun aku kembali berpikir.. Atas nama apa langkah-langkah kaki terasa ringan sampai disini? Atas nama apa rela melalui ribuan kilometer untuk menjaga sesama? Atas nama apa paparan ini berubah dari lamunan jadi torehan tinta?

Atau belajar mencintai memang tak semudah memahami jutaan bintang di langit malam?

Hmmm, apa yang kau pikirkan saat kita berbincang siang lalu?

In 1919, a famous case was brought against a man, Charles Schenck, in the United States. The case, farcically titled: ‘Schenck V. United States‘, came about as a result of the Defendant’s actions in distributing leaflets (in Yiddish, no less) attacking the draft in the 15,000 documents he printed – to persons either eligible for the draft or – get this – also opposed to the draft.

Anyone worth his salt has at least perused the history of the First World War, the unnecessary slaughter of some 40 million due to some inbred monarchical quibbling (the Kaiser and King George were first cousins – grandsons of Queen Victoria) It may not be said, after all, that there was some kind of nobility of justification for the war. With no Nazis or Holocaust on which to retrospectively rely when the necessity of the war was called into question, it remains an uncharged disgrace – the product of imperialist jingoism. It was unwarranted and thus contemptible. To have forced draft young men (having guilted them with propaganda and Uncle Sam’s accusatory finger in the States) is callous beyond belief. It is a war crime.

Anyway, so Schenck is hauled before the court and charged with violating the Espionage Act of 1917. Where Schenck argued that the draft was ostensibly tantamount to slavery, the court countered by alluding (he was not charged with treason) that he was a spy. In his preposterous, unreasoned and unsound judgement, the famous (infamous?) Judge Oliver Wendell Holmes Jnr. speculated that Schenck’s crime had exempted itself from the protection of the First Amendment. Holmes posited that he could not be exculpated using the old ‘freedom of speech’ chestnut because, as he now infamously suggested, it was equivalent ‘to shouting “fire” in a crowded theatre’. Schenck posed a ‘clear and present danger’ (the source of the famous expression) that would precipitate ’substantive evils’ – he was sentenced to 6 months in prison and found dead shortly thereafter.

In 2005, David Irving, the controversial historian, was apprehended and sentenced to 3 years in solitary confinement for violation of the Austrian Verbotsgesetz law committed 16 years prior, in 1989. The Law’s specifics are ambiguous, it being an over-reactionary Stalinist-era piece of legislation – but essentially denying or diminishing the Holocaust (capital h?) is against the law. This is reminiscent of the German law, Volksverhetzung, where ’stirring up the populace’ is prohibited. Perhaps something is lost in translation. In 1992, Irving was convicted of this crime also – principally due to his ‘denial’ of the Holocaust.

Now I have just read an excellent book called ‘History, Justice and the David Irving Libel Case’ by D.D. Guttenplan wherein he gives an account of the libel action brought by Irving on an American historian, Deborah Lipstadt – for labelling him a ‘Holocaust denier’ in her book ‘Denying the Holocaust‘. In the case, Irving forced Penguin (the Defendant – against the Claimant – not Plaintiff, a relic of old English law) to essentially prove or establish the literal veracity of the Holocaust (or really parts of it, as it was claimed that Irving had denied the Holocaust in his published works) Now I have not read Irving’s work, but from the transcript of the case, the term ‘Holocaust-denier’ is not one I would attribute to Irving. Anyway, I’m not defending Irving’s very controversial stance on history. The fact is that, for questioning, for example, the numbers involved in the Holocaust (or Auschwitz-Birkenau, Majdanek etc) or questioning eye-witness testimony, or indeed Irving’s attempt to make Himmler, not Hitler as its sole architect – one can be thrown into prison.

Let me illustrate my point: If I were to wander around Grafton Street with a megaphone, and with ‘The Famine Never Happened’ or ‘The Famine Was Grossly Exaggerated’ emblazoned across a cardboard sign I was wearing, I would be heckled, ridiculed (like those religious fellows) or even assaulted. However, I would be allowed to express my revisionist view, despite its insensitivity to a probable majority. Notwithstanding the populace’s understandable objections, I retain the right to express my opinion. I revel in it. Hopefully, unlike the evidently featherweight U.S. constitution, Ireland’s courts will have the balls to stick to their guns should the occasion ask it of them.

Finally, I would just like to express my disgust at what I’m going to call ‘ecclesiatical-correctness’. Once again, as with a plethora of other issues, it is the Muslims who are at fault and are the bullseye in my metaphorical idealistic dartboard once again. When, in 1988, Salman Rushdie published his (from what I hear) literary masterpiece: the Satanic Verses, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of Iran (of whose literacy I am gravely skeptical), who claims to be a ‘Shi’a scholar’, issued a ‘fatwa’: a grotesque, antediluvian death-order. Now before I continue, I have researched the matter and yes, it is rare that the word ‘fatwa’ carries this meaning, but in this instance it most certainly DID. Thus began a murderous campaign that resulted in the death of the Japanese Publisher, Hitoshi Igarashi (stabbed multiple times) and three other foreign-language interpreters or publishers were stabbed repeatedly, but lived – just about. On the whim of a demagogue, a rabble, half-a-billion strong, was roused. If the common-sense view that fanaticism is correlated with lack of education is taken, it follows that the vast, vast majority of these ‘people’ were illiterate and could not possibly have understood/interpreted the book itself. It was based entirely on the supposition that the Ayatollah was the moral dictator (a man whose father lowered the marriage age to 9 years old)

in 2004, Danish cartoonists drew several hilarious strips depicting the prophet Mohammed in various hilarious situations (including the one about heaven running out of virgins) that I’m sure were the subject of hilarity to all those who read them. Except the barbarous cretins (the same is true of all religious people who believe in proselytism) who called for the death of the publishers as well as a kind of Danish Kristallnacht. This sordid behaviour was met with outrageous moral ambivalence. The mainstream media lamented the lack of sensitivity, and indeed, went as far as implying Rushdie was deserving of this Bronze-Age Muslim attack, being a Muslim himself.

An islamic troll/mullah in Pakistan offered $1,000,000 as a reward for the cartoonist’s head. Do you think this incitement to murder will be/was punished? Think again. It is incidents like these that cause the word ‘Muslim’ to be regarded as pejorative. That an obscure Danish magazine – expressing free speech, no less – could cause the muslim community to attack all things Danish with such acharnement beggars belief. It testifies to the Islamic contempt for free speech and deviation from the direct word of an illiterate Arabic merchant.

So, in closing, I believe that freedom of speech is all-to-often taken for granted. Those miscreants who oppose freedom of expression should be extirpated from social discourse, if not shunned from society all together. The allusion should not be wasted on you! Without seeming to state the obvious, remember that in the aforementioned cases, as recently as 2005, legislation exists that forbids free expression. This must stop.

Sampel anak panah dan kancing memang tepat sekali untuk menggambarkan butuhnya usaha yang ”habis-habisan” untuk bisa mendapatkan harapan kita. Karena sebetulnya kita sering mengukur cukup rendah harapan kita, sehingga usaha yang kita lakukan pun tak sampai mengucurkan keringat apalagi terengah-engah kekurangan napas. Mungkin pula usaha yang kita lakukan bisa dibilang sambil lalu, iseng-iseng berhadiah plus basa basi semata. Wajar jika ”kegagalan” harapan kita sudah di depan mata.

Ironis memang, belum mencoba sekuat tenaga sudah beranggapan tidak bisa. Apakah ini penyakit pemuda sekarang ? Atau alasan kita belaka untuk mendapatkan kemudahan-kemudahan. Kemudian, banyak yang mencari kambing hitam permasalahan yang kita hadapi. Ternyata sungguh dangkal pemikiran kita.

Alangkah indahnya jika setiap mimpi dan harapan kita selalu kita letakkan di atas kita, mengawang di langit kehidupan kita. Menjadi motivator utama dalam hidup kita layaknya minyak untuk mengidupkan api. Sehingga motivasi untuk terus berjuang secara maksimal dalam merealisasikannya akan terus berkobar.

Sobat, dalam hidup ini masing-masing dari kita harusnya mulai melihat dibutuhkannya sebuah ujian hidup untuk membuat kualitas diri kita semakin meningkat. Tentunya ujian hidup kita disesuaikan kemampuan kita. Contoh anak panah dan kancing semoga menjadi inspirasi kita dalam melihat dari sisi lain tentang makna ujian dan cobaan. Seperti tertuang dalam Al Qur’an Al Insyirah : 6-8 :

“Maka sesungguhnya bersama kesulitan ada kemudahan. Sesungguhnya bersama kesulitan ada kemudahan. Maka apabila engkau telah selesai (dari sesuatu urusan), tetaplah bekerja keras (untuk urusan yang lain). Dan hanya kepada Tuhanmulah engkau berharap.”

Melihat kutipan ayat di atas tentunya membuat kita semakin yakin bahwa kebahagiaan akan semakin terasa nikmatnya saat ujian yang ada telah kita lewati dengan sukses. Bagi umat muslim kuncinya hanya satu HUSNUDZONBILLAH…

Ayo sobat, kita mulai hari baru dengan melihat setiap ujian merupakan awal kebahagiaan……

Beginilah seharusnya yang terpatri dalam pikiran kita dalam memaknai hidup. Bukan hanya sekedar rutinitas untuk menghabiskan “waktu” hidup atau hanya “pasrah” tanpa arah untuk menerima nasib.

Tak seharusnya kita begitu lugas saat berkata “nasibku ga sebaik nasibmu”, saat kita belum mengerahkan seluruh tenaga dalam berproses untuk mendapat hasil yang maksimal.

Tak layak pula jika kita dengan mudahnya menjustifikasi dengan berkata “kalau aku yang keterima kerja di situ, sudah pasti lebih sukses” hanya karena bisa berasumsi kalau semua masalah hidup bisa diselesaikan oleh teori-teori dari buku.

Banyak hal memang yang harus kita pelajari, salah satunya tentang visi-misi hidup. Karena kaita diciptakan Allah bukan hanya untuk sekedar hidup. Tapi lebih kepada tujuan yang mulia, yaitu untuk beribadah kepadaNya dan berlomba-lomba dalam kebaikan. Manusia memang mudah sekali terlena, hanya dengan ”rasa aman” sedikit saja sudah membuatnya lupa akan tugas dan kewajibannya. Terlalu senang membuang waktu dalam hal yang sia-sia dan tak berfaedah pada dirinya juga lingkungannya. Sebagai contoh seorang pelajar, tentunya tujuan dia bersekolah untuk menambah wawasan dan keilmuannya, tapi kadang terbias dengan mimpi-mimpi semu seperti ”pengin beken”, ”idola sekolah”, nge-gank, nyobain ”pacaran” dan banyak hal yang nyleneh untuk dilakukan di sekolah.

Bahkan ada yang menjawab saat ditanya alasan kenapa melakukannya, mereka menjawab ”seolah kami akan terpisah dari yang lain jika tak mengikuti trend masa kini”.

Dilematis, saat harusnya kreasi, imajinasi dan motivasi anak muda untuk menciptakan sesuatu yang baru dalam fase hidup mereka, ternyata terkaburkan dengan ”kesenangan masa muda” yang tak jelas arahnya.

Yuk, kita sama-sama membangun pandangan baru tentang bagaimana membuat hidup lebih hidup. Yang pasti kedepankan prestasi untuk dengan atau tanpa apresiasi.

3rd darlington speech sent to darlington clps

I am writing for help in getting selected for the darlngton seat on 5th December 2009,. I am up for nomination according to the timetable for selection i hope to get your vote on nomination days in the clp votes that will take place between 3rd and 12th november 2009.

I will try speak about national issues and hopefully with local issues effectively if selected.

My aim is to represent the people of darlington properly and organise the interaction between the westminister office and local consistuency so that constituents views can be taken up straight away in parliament whether by using sms, fax, letters, emails, twitter, facebook and any communication method such as a normal blog standard phone .

If selected as mp i intend to use the consistuency office as a job centre to help people find work locally or nationally, a meeting place and recruitment centre for voluntary assistance in terms of helping me as a mp for darlington if selected. Local workers from clp and outside of the labour party if no one from the local area applies will be given preference in jobs at the constituency office and at westminister office.

This will bring in more people from darlington into politics and also will help people in darlington clp become more active in politics whether to choose to become a mp, councillor or an elected labour official in nec maybe someday or choose to understand what goes on in politics and have their views heard by the local mp and presented at parliament.

If they are issues where local people have views which are at odd with the labour party i am very happy to put the local people view across as mp as personally i think local constituents are important as the party’s position and even more important local problems will arise due to national level politics having a local impact which has not been planned properly.

I will run rss feed which is feed of local news and mps activities for people who want suscribe to that service it will free from mps office (if selected) if i can get a mobile phone provider freely feed that news through to you using twitter to your mobile phone or a feed reader program such as feedreader for those who have a pc or laptop at home.

Also video sites such as dailymotion, metacafe or youtube will be used to get give updates to those subscribe for free to my mp site.

The recession which i believe is over and the figures will come out to show this as result of labour’s economic recovery plan and faith of people in purchasing new cars and spending which needs to be encouraged by a tax cut aimed primarly to get people to spend as well as at the time creating jobs by giving ppl work experience who are unemployed, retraining and also encouraging councils to lower business rates to encourage businesses to set up in an area for first year or 2 years to increase the number of jobs in the local area.

Please give your nomination and vote for me at nomination meeting and at the hustings.

Hi my name is salman jafri,i have a death threat, I am standing for labour party’s selection of darlington ppc for next general election.

I have been a member of labour for nearly 5 years.

My policies for selection as candidate of labour party are as follows,

If selected as ppc of darlington, i will push for tax cuts prior to the general election and after the general election funded by sell off of the banks that govt own as well funded the recovery of the world economy.

I will try to encourage darlington council to allow several projects which will provide jobs in the area to be given the go ahead which i have seen under consideration by darlington council such as wind farms and retail parks.

Also housing i will try to get government policy altered to help those on lower and middle income to climb the housing ladder with banks giving part buy part rent option to people to stop them being stretched financially and houses/flat being repossessed once a person loses their job.

Job losses where people have lost their jobs as those potentially at the corus plants near darlington, these people should be given the chance to get retraining, training and work experience in other areas of work within the first 6 months so they can quickly get back into work and not get into heavy debt.

Also i believe people should be allowed to get training for free while working by various schemes that are announced on the radio so that people can increase their personal skills so they can get better paid jobs whether this by further courses at university by distance learning or training in new skills or any other method.

Also student tuition fees will be scrapped once the government has enough money from banks being sold off, changes to current spending to cut waste and changes to squeeze money out of the current budgets of various departments by changing the systems internally of various institutions such as the nhs with its multiple trusts. Also giving work placements on leaving university or prior to joining university to students to cut their student loan debts.

To get people into politics, i want the current system changed so no political party is funded by individuals or companies with lots of money to get influence over various parties, where policies of parties are written especially for certain people in mind.

So i would have all allowances scrapped in houses of commons , a democratically elected upper chamber of 100 people of various backgrounds, they can be hereditary or life peers or just normal people who want to be in politics and also i want to lower the membership fees of all parties so that anyone can join.

Anyone who does join will get access to the party and be encouraged to take part and even become an elected member of the party.

I want the labour ppc selection procedure changed so that people from all backgrounds no matter how rich or how poor can stand the same chance of getting selected to the house of parliament or to upper elected house.

Homeless people and charities in darlington, i would try to have people who are homeless get the chance to work quickly and get accommodation rented so they do not end up on streets. I would like a homeless shelter in darlington to stay open to provide shelter for those who want it instead of closing.

I would encourage people in darlington to do voluntary, political and charity work to increase their own skills and knowledge and this should open people to new opportunities in their lives run by darlington council like a city based voluntary organization.

I know darlington is the headquarters of a care home group, i would want winter allowances to be increased in the next term of parliament and energy saving work on old people homes and homes which old people stay in themselves as opposed old people homes. Also give old people the chance to save money to spend more on heating and more on shopping instead of worrying about where the next payment is coming from to pay things they need.

Cuts that are going to be done by the tory party will directly affect people in this country, i personally think with a few changes this country can afford to spend on tax cuts without cutting services back heavily as is going to be proposed by the tory party.

With more money coming in, the government due to vat returning to its previous levels either this year or next year, more people getting help in getting jobs, the stock market recovering, banks paying back loans to the government, house/flat sales increasing due to low interest rates and low inflation helping in keeping interest rates low, the government should have more money to make tax cuts without the heavy services cut being proposed by the tory party purely to fund a tax cut geared primarly across the board but in reality at those who are earning a quite of lot of money anyway.

Green jobs in this country will be a growth industry such as wind farms, hydro plants and energy saving work such as house heating saving projects. I would like darlington to be area where jobs come to due to such schemes or industries.

Also i would like events such you be the judge held by County Durham Residents Association (CDRA)* to be held every month between darlington people and criminal justice agencies to give local people access, help them understand the criminal justice system and suggest sentencing that should be carried out by criminal justice system integrated with DARLINGTON Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) run by darlington police where the local people help the police to reduce crime in darlington.

Darlington council can run events like this and other councils would follow across the country hopefully as the government scheme to give power to people.

I am a member of unite for the past 2 years, i have supported and campaigned for the car scrappage scheme and continuing help to the car industry in the uk by this scrappage scheme.

Also i support further skills training to be given free by those employed whether from their professional body, union and at a discount by skills training companies by contract with the government to provide training in work as well those unemployed within 6 months instead of after 6 months unemployment so people can get back into work quickly.

Perang itu amat dahsyat. Ketakutan dan ancaman hilir mudik di telinga penduduk madinah, yang saat itu akan diserang oleh pasukan koalisi yahudi dan kaum quraisy yang siap menghancurkan kota itu. Menghancurkan pusat peradaban akhlak sebagai cerminan keberadaban manusia. Menghancurkan sosok teladan umat manusia, Muhammad SAW.

Mereka berunding, berpikir untuk dapat bertahan, terlebih bisa mengalahkan. Strategi apa yang dibutuhkan?, itulah pertanyaan besar yang terlontar dan membutuhkan jawaban yang brillian. Jawaban yang menjadi inspirasi sebagai energi gerakan perlawanan.

Panas, tandus, begitulah kondisi madinah saat itu. Saat berunding, semua terpukau dan merasa kagum dengan satu inspirasi besar dari seorang pemuda yang baru beberapa waktu memeluk agama islam. Inspirasi besar itulah yang menjadi tonggak kemenangan. Perkenalkanlah, pemuda penuh inspirasi itu adalah Salman Al-farisi.

Salman al-Farisi adalah orang yang banyak mengetahui seluk-beluk strategi peperangan, yang belum dikenal di daerah-daerah Arab. Ia menyarankan supaya di sekitar Madinah itu digali parit dan keadaan kota diperkuat dari dalam.

Tanah yang keras, tak menyurutkan langkah mereka untuk merealisasikan inspirasi tersebut. Bahkan dikala malam yang dingin menusuk tulang, mereka tetap bekerja untuk menyelesaikan parit itu.

Hingga ketika sang Rosul memukul batu yang amat keras untuk membuat parit, terperciklah api besar dan beliau pun bersabda : ”Persia akan kita kalahkan”, kemudian sang Rosul memukul batu untuk yang kedua kalinya sehingga terperciklah api yang lebih besar seraya bersabda : ”setelah itu Romawi akan kita taklukkan”. Para sahabat terperangah melihat keoptimisan sang Rosul.

Dari mana rasa optimis itu hadir ?. Apakah itu bahasa menghibur diri dari ketakutan ?. Tidak. Sedikit pun tidak ada bahasa ketakutan di sana. Yang ada adalah ke-optimis-an. Rasa optimis yang hadir karena inspirasi besar akan kemenangan yang membawa kebaikan untuk rahmat sekalian alam. Inspirasi melahirkan optimisme. Menumbuhkan keberanian, tanggung jawab dan menebarkan kebaikan di setiap waktu, tempat dan dimana pun kita berpijak.

Salman Al-farisi yang menularkannya, dengan senantiasa belajar dari energi inspirasi besar. Guru inspirasi besar, teladan umat sepanjang zaman, yaitu Muhammad SAW.

Sudahkah Anda memiliki inspirasi yang membuat Anda selalu tumbuh cerdas, bertanggung jawab dan menjadi solusi untuk orang lain ?.
