In the last post more rules on how to address a business letter were discussed such as where to

In the last post more rules on how to address a business letter were discussed such as where to place the date, how to address the person you are writing to known as the salutation, keeping the tone of the body of the letter formal and concise and how to write your words so they will be sure to not be misunderstood by the reader. In this post we will further consider the rules that will help you write a business letter.

When you are about to close a letter it is time to thank the person for their time in reading the letter, for taking the action you are asking them to take or whatever else you would like to thank them for. It is a courteous way to end a courteous letter and remind your reader that you are a serious businessperson who wants to take every effort to resolve a problem or to address an issue of any type. After thanking your reader, it is time to end your letter with another salutation such as With Best Regards. Below this you will type your name as well as sign the letter by hand. You will want to quadruple-space between the salutation and the printing of your name to have adequate room for your signature. Writing your signature with black ink adds sincerity to what is otherwise a formal business letter. This completes the mechanics of writing a business letter. After it is finished you might need a copy for future reference, so storing a copy on your computer would be another good idea.

Sometimes there are extra articles that are attached to your main correspondence. Anything could fall under this umbrella such as a pie chart, for example, if you would like to show your reader an example of what you are writing about. This would be an enclosure and you would let the reader know that you have included a graph or chart by typing the word Enclosure at the bottom of your business letter. You may also need to send a copy of this same letter to more than one person. In that case you would type cc at the bottom of the letter with the names of the people who will receive a copy of the letter written after it. Generally, people are not sending actual carbon copies of their letters, cc stands for carbon copy, but this is the proper way to let everyone know that a copy of the letter is going out to others.

These rules will help you create good, effective business letters, but there are also business letter templates that will take the stress out of writing business letters. Letters for every situation, already created and ready to be personalized by you, can be found in business letter template collections. It’s worth a try.

Hadith 19 and 20:
The right of a muslim upon another muslim is that his greeting should be responded

Abu Huraira(raa) reported Allah’s Messenger may peace be upon him as saying :
“Six are the rights of a muslim over another muslim ” It was then said to him Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) “What are these ?”
Thereupon he said:
“When you meet him offer him greetings, when he invites you to feast accept it, when he seeks your council give him,
and when he sneezes and says “Alhamdulillah” you say Yarhamuk Allah (may Allah show mercy on you),
and when he falls sick visit him, and when he dies follow his bier (janaazah)

Similarly there is one more Hadith

Abu Huraira(raa).reported Allah’s Messenger may peace be on him as saying:
“Five are the rights of a muslim over his brother: Responding to salutation, saying YarhamukAllah when somebody sneezes and says Alhamdulillah,
visiting the sick, following the bier(janaazah).”

Hadith no 5379 and 5378, Sahih Muslim, Kitab-as-salaam

PS: Some of you might have noticed that second hadith says 5 things but mentions only 4 things, i checked at quite a few places but found same hadith everywhere if any one knoes the correct one kindly let me know.
Allah knows best what is right and what is wrong

By Dan Volkens, Senior Interactive Designer While our team continually challenges DonorDrive for im

By Dan Volkens, Senior Interactive Designer

While our team continually challenges DonorDrive for improvement, it’s our users who provide us with real world feedback. We’re actively working on many suggestions and improvements, but I’d like to highlight a few that we’ve completed and rolled out recently:

Ditch the Salutation Field

Support Youtube, Flickr, and Website Links on Fundraising Pages

Provide an Event Summary Printout

Ditch the Salutation Field

Very early in DonorDrive’s planning, we debated internally to include salutation as a required field in the registration form, both as a courtesy to registrants and as a valuable piece of demographic information to organizations. As it turns out, this field proved to be a roadblock to registration rather than to add value.

Registrants questioned its necessity in being required, let alone asked for.

Many users register for more than one person, I.E. a couple, a family, etc., even though the DonorDrive system supports a single user per registration. In this case, the standard salutations of Mr. Mrs. Ms. don’t apply.

Users have asked us to remove this unnecessary field. We agreed. The salutation field has been removed from the registration process on all DonorDrive websites.

Support Youtube, Flickr, and Website Links on Fundraising Pages

Initially the personal and team fundraising pages were very well received. But with the explosion of social media, request upon request was made for Youtube and Flickr support, as well as the ability to link out to a few favorite websites. We set out to integrate those capabilities as soon as possible.

Participants and teams can now add videos, photo slideshows and three website links to their fundraising pages with a simple copy and paste. Just grab the embed code from Youtube or Flickr and paste into your fundraising page edit form.

Provide an Event Summary Printout

Many Organizations require a participant to bring some sort of handout or registration/donations printout to the event, whether it be for tracking purposes, final registration, fundraising tracking, etc. So we integrated a simple Event Summary printout under the participant’s donations details in the My Account area.

Event Summary details:

Participant’s first and last name

Verified total funds raised

Unverified cash & check funds raised

Team information (if part of a team)

Event information

Waiver with signature line and date (if required by the organization)

That wraps it up for now. We have many more enhancements either on the table or already in development. We’ll keep you updated on our progress!

On the Yahoo group of my school alumni association, there was recently a vibrant debate on whether o

On the Yahoo group of my school alumni association, there was recently a vibrant debate on whether or not one should address elders as “Sir”. I thought the debate should be brought out of the closed e-group. So, this post.

To Sir or not to Sir? To Ma’am or not to Ma’am? – This is an issue we all have faced — continue to face — in one way or the other at one time or the other.

When I was in school and college, there was no problem. All teachers and professors were addressed Sir or Ma’am. No second thoughts on any counts.

Trouble started when I got a job. The serious seniors were called Sir and Madam. But there was one among them who told me not call him Sir. I wondered how could he not like being called Sir, and dismissed his request as a pretense to being politically correct. He looked very much the sort of person who would actually enjoy the sound of Sir.

But the next time I Sir-red him, he told me with a stern look and a firm voice, ”Didn’t I tell you not to call me Sir. Just call me (his name)…”. This landed me in a difficult predicament. I couldn’t bring myself to addressing him by his name, and took the easy path of calling him nothing. Anyway, the agony didn’t last long, as he got another job and left.

Then there were a few seniors who were quite friendly, and never threw their weight around as seniors. With them, I discovered that calling them by their name, though initially difficult, was not impossible, with the ice melting very fast.

As I moved gradually to middle level, things were easier. No longer a rank junior, I took the liberty to call most of my immediate seniors by their name.

Other side of sir-ing divide

When I became a senior myself, I discovered that I was on the other side of the Sir-ing divide. It became apparent with the newcomers calling me Sir. Some of them not really junior, but I never made any forceful attempt to change the way they called me. Not because I enjoyed being Sir-ed (I don’t like being called Sir), but I knew with time, Sir will quietly vanish. And it did. All the (then) newcomers, without having to be told, began addressing me by name. I felt good.

But with more time passing, we have had still younger newcomers. Like earlier they have all been calling me Sir. The camaraderie of the work place has broken down the walls of formality. But the Sir-ing has continued. I told them, “Enough of Sir; just all me Pradeep.” But they replied: “Sir, you are so senior, and we are so junior how can we call you by your name!”

I have left it at that, reconciling myself to the fact that I am getting old, and the actual and perceived age difference between me and my juniors is indeed wide. Also, I get an eerie feeling that if I pushed this issue further, out of sheer compulsion, a few of my juniors might reluctantly call me nothing. Imagine, someone unable to call me either as Sir or Pradeep, trying desperately to catch my attention by raising voice, or waving hand, or pushing a paper, or talking out of turn… O, that’s bizarre.

I hope one day — when the perceived age-difference narrows down to a comfortable level, when the junior-senior perception has vanished — they all will call me Pradeep…

Sir and Madam out of courtesy

The usage of Sir and Madam is not restricted to offices. In fact, it is used out of courtesy when talking to a stranger, old or young, unless the person is too young and one might prefer Young Man or Young Girl. In India, very few people use it out of courtesy. We as a nation, in fact, lag quite far behind when it comes to being courteous to strangers. Very rarely there is a Thank you, or a Please, forget Sir or Madam.

There is a school of thought that ascribes Sir and Madam to servility, a legacy of the British Raj. I don’t agree. One can be servile without using Sir and even while using Sir one can be dominating.

Sir and Madam indicate respect, and can often be used in a disarming manner to get an upper hand in an interpersonal situation. In fact, a lot of us, easily resort to Sir or Madam when we have to get something done. So, in government offices or in any such place where we have to speak to someone in power, however disrespectful he or she looks or behaves, we selfishly use Sir or Madam.

Comfort level

So, let us go back to the initial question: To Sir or not to Sir. Is there a thumb rule? Is there a definitive guideline? I doubt if there is.

Sir and Madam do sound quite formal and official. Between strangers when the ice has melted and formality has given way to informality, Sir and Madam also give way to First Name. And, to make it doubly sure, at the earliest opportunity, the issue is settled with “Hope you don’t mind me calling you … (his or her first name).” This will in all likelihood fetch the answer: “Sure… (first name).

How much ever the formality in interpersonal interaction has broken down, a wide difference (actual or perceived) in age can induce a sense of distance between the two persons, forcing the use of Sir or Madam. The perceived age difference can come down with greater interaction over a period of time. Then, mostly Sir and Madam too vanish.

At the end of it all, it’s the comfort level that matters; the comfort level of the junior and the senior; the person who is addressing and the person who is addressed.

Let me end with a quote from a Polish blogger, Anna:

Polish is a very formal language. And people may take offense when they’re not addressed properly. A few months ago I was out with a group of friends and strangers, foreigners and Poles. I chatted with one lady in English, turned out she was Polish, so I switched to Polish. Because in English, I addressed her as “you”, I didn’t even think twice about using the same form in Polish – “ty”. She was my age and we were in a foreign country. Yet, her response was an icy stare and an even icier “Ja z tobą krów nie pasałam” (I didn’t tend cows with you) which is a nasty warning to a person talking to you (me in this case) that he/she has breached the magical Pan/Pani barrier.

Galatians 1:2-5

Paul truly was a unique fellow, with a unique calling and an extraordinary ministry. The apostleship was a rare office itself, limited to only 13 people in the history of the world. But, Paul’s experiences as an apostle, missionary, and preacher had some distinct elements of which we do not see much with the other apostles. Perhaps, one might say, it really only appears that Paul’s ministry was super-unique because his writings dominate the majority of the New Testament and, consequently, we have a vast amount of documentation covering his life as a servant of Christ. This may be true, but even Paul himself seemed to be convinced that his ministry was terribly special, filled with events that tested him in extra-ordinary ways.

Paul describes some of these distinct aspects and events of his personal ministry in I Cor. 11:22-28. The entire list focuses on gruesome external happenings, except the very last thing in verse 28: Beside those things that are without [or, external], that which comes upon me daily, the care of all the churches. Only a passing glimpse at a map of Paul’s four missionary journeys is necessary to capture the idea that Paul bore in his heart the weight of an overwhelmingly great multitude of churches. And while he was hard-pressed from time to time with extreme physical distress, it was the [internal] care of all the churches that came upon him daily. This pastoral burden was not unique to Paul – other of the apostles had the same responsibilities towards other churches – but certainly the “level” of that burden and responsibility was heightened in Paul’s case due to the number of churches he influenced and the ongoing (and sometimes slow) maturity he had to oversee.

Included in Paul’s shepherd fold were the needy and seemingly immature sheep of the churches of Galatia. In his only letter to the Galatians (that we have record of), Paul goes quickly to the body of his sharp, and somewhat tempered, message (1:6). There were some severe issues with which he needed to deal, and it was needful that his words be perceived in a way as to highlight the severity of those things. But, despite the earthly, lowly, and devilish matters at hand, Paul would not exclude from this message his highest concern for the Galatians. As always, Paul’s utmost desire and hope for those he cared for, and his deepest internal burden, was that they would center their lives on Jesus Christ.

Though much of this letter is given to the defense of Paul’s apostleship and the teaching of Christian liberty, the overhanging purpose is to settle those matters decisively and, as a result, bring the gospel of Christ back to the forefront. Paul states this purpose plainly when he says he is travailing in birth again until Christ be formed in them (4:19). That is to say, “I am working towards the highest goal: developing within you full trust in the true Jesus, satisfaction in Him alone, and genuine Christ-likeness”.

In chapter 1, verses 2-5, Paul, as he salutes the Galatians, establishes his high hopes with a precise, but detailed, presentation of the gospel …

From: Us…To: You – verse 2

Following a rather extended parenthesis in which Paul explains the origin of his calling as an apostle, he continues his salutation from verse 1: Paul, an apostle…and all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia…

Seeing that the whole letter is written from a first person standpoint, with ample use of first person pronouns, we should not understand the phrase, all the brethren which are with me, to imply that there were multiple authors. Paul was in Rome at the time, amongst brothers and sisters who were no doubt in agreement with what the letter said, and who (we might presume) wanted to be included in extending the same greetings and edifying exhortations as Paul gives in the verses that follow. This gives the letter an extra bit of clout, and it fulfills exceedingly what the Lord prescribed for Church disciplinary matters: if your brother shall trespass against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone… but if he will not hear you, then take with you one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established (Matt. 18:15-16). The brethren that were presently at Paul’s side provided more than enough witnesses.

We can not tell the extent of the damage done by the Judaizers in Galatia, but nobody is left out in addressing this epistle to all the churches of Galatia. Whether the Judaizers had made a complete run through every church in the region, or would potentially do so in the near future, is of little importance. What concerns Paul is that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump (5:9), and where there is a common tongue, news travels quickly. Like a doctor seeking to cure one’s cancer, the simplest way to stop the spread was to examine and treat the entire body.

Paul’s Concise Gospel – verses 3-5

After the “From:” and “To:” of the letter comes what we might call the stated “purpose”. Not necessarily the theme of the letter, but rather the ever-present reason for Paul’s ministering to the Galatians (or to anyone, for that matter) through this piece of writing. The next three verses are best read as one line: Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Those before us called this a “benediction”, or a prayer of blessings on the Galatians. More than just mere wishes, these benedictions are found regularly at the beginning of Paul’s letters (I Cor. 1:3 and II Cor. 1:2, for example). Only, this particular prayer includes in verse 4 what John MacArthur finds to be a complete and adequate presentation of the gospel (however “pocket-sized” it is!). Together with words of hope in verse 3, and words of worship in verse 5, these three verses model a discourse that we would do well to mimic – in some contemporary fashion – in our conversations with others (believers or not). There are few surer ways to love another than to pray God’s grace and peace on them (James 5:16), remind them of God’s act of grace and peace through His Son Jesus Christ, and to guide them to worship Him together with you.

As with most everything that Paul has written, one can hardly gather the full weight of what he is saying with a passing glance, particularly when he makes short work of a tall topic. As mentioned earlier, Paul seemed to have a bit of urgency in getting to the main issues of this epistle, so his salutation is somewhat shorter than usual. Shorter, but no less packed with profound truth.

First, he prays for grace and peace to be on the Galatians.

Grace, as commonly put, describes an occasion in which we receive something that we do not deserve. Not one of us deserves even one more breath in this life, yet, by God’s grace, I am able to complete this sentence, and you are able to read through it. But, as we know, God’s grace goes far beyond the moment by moment. By His freely given grace, all things work to the good of those who love God and walk uprightly (Ps. 84:11; Ro. 8:28). His grace empowers our ministry (I Cor. 3:10, 15:10), enables us to lead a godly and simple life (I Cor. 1:12), and is sufficient for all our needs (II Cor. 12:9). But, most importantly, no man can be saved outside of saving grace (Acts 15:11; Ro. 11:6).

Paul prayed for such grace to continue with the Galatians, particularly in view of their current waywardness. Paul knew more of God’s grace than most (I Tim. 1:12-13), and he trusted in God’s grace alone to bring the Galatians out of their current bondage and back into the gospel light.

This grace, Paul prayed, would see them through a change from carnal-mindedness to spiritual-mindedness, for to be carnally minded is death: but to be spiritually minded is life and peace (Rom. 8:6). Peace, or inward oneness and restfulness, is the other blessing that Paul prays for concerning the Galatians in verse 3. The Judaizers had brought in a false doctrine, spreading confusion throughout the region. Confusion, Paul suggests in I Cor. 14:33, is antithetical to peace. Confusion puts our mind in one place (or several places), and our heart in another. With this letter, Paul hoped to re-unify the confused and wandering minds and hearts of the Galatians to center on Christ, who promised His very own peace to those who loved him (John 14:27).

That peace would not come from a carnal trust in the works of the flesh (circumcision), but rather a spiritual trust in the work of Christ, who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God our Father. What greater peace could there be than to know that it was the will of God that believers be saved through a work that is already finished? This is the gospel in its entirety! God actively sought to bridge the gap created by sin between us and Him, and He accomplished it (finished it, completed it, settled it for good) through the work of His Son, Jesus Christ. This present evil world should not and can not constrain us to rely on anything else for our salvation.

Such was the will of God for the Galatians, and such is the will of God for those of us who believe (Rom. 10:9-10). To add to the gospel is to create another gospel altogether, and there was not to be anything added, nor anything new created (Rev. 22:18-19). The presence of the true gospel message in verse 4 stands in stark contrast to the Judaizers’ gospel that Paul speaks of in the verses shortly hereafter (1:6-9).

In reminding the Galatians of the true gospel, there’s little doubt that Paul’s language in verse 4 struck some familiar chords in their memories of his preaching. It was the very message of grace that he had taught them, and it was with faith in this message that they worshipped together in truth, prior to the arrival of the false teachers. Thus, verse 5: to whom (God the Father) be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Paul glorified God because of what He had done through His Son, and through His Son alone, and it was this God-centered and Christ-centered worship that he set out to re-introduce in the remainder of this letter.

Dieu le Très-Haut a dit:

I’m off to Gowanda Eye Care in about five minutes to pick up my new glasses. They are very pro-looking and also extremely spiffy

I really hope my parents’ flight to Mexico is going okay. I know airlines are supposed to be safe and wonderful but it is a five-hour ride. They’re with Mark and Karen, so they should be entertained… but. Pff. I really want it to be fine.

Raaa, okay okay. Now I need to finish getting ready. Maybe put some shoes on. Y’know, that kind of thing. Toodles.

I rested finally, calmly. The water sang to me

Just so as not to close the more or less national feel-good holiday of Christmas Eve with a curmudge

Just so as not to close the more or less national feel-good holiday of Christmas Eve with a curmudgeonly broadside, I got out a hammer and a masonry nail and went out on my front porch.

The bit I wrote about tea and the Sanskrit greeting namaste reminded me that a couple of months ago I sprung on impulse for an overpriced ceramic plaque with this inscription. (I have been doing Yoga since I was nine so I cannot be accused of casual tradition-skimming.)

In what amounts to some sort of ongoing nefarious Feng Shui sabotage conspiracy, both the porch and the enclosure — which I designed and had built when I moved in, as a cat trap and shelter for arriving clients — always seem to be decaying before my eyes. My semi-retarded gardener, while obliviously pounding reinforcing nails into the railings one day, shook loose the fake flagstone veneer over what turned out to be a sinking and tilting concrete understructure. Probably another job by the previous occupants, who left me things like a hot-wired clothes dryer.

No amount of Rockite keeps the flags from shifting or shearing for long, and since I have to have customers coming in and out, I am fiddling with the stuff all the time, especially in freezing weather. The wood frame of the enclosure has withstood the elements pretty well but the prefabbed saloon-style screen doors are always deteriorating in interesting ways.

The whole thing badly needs some uplift, short of the four figure expense of tearing it down and doing it right, so tonight I claw-hammered the old house number out of the bricks, smacked in a fluted masonry nail and stuck Namaste up under the porch light. About as good a sentiment as any I can think of at this festive season of the year.

The divine in me salutes the divine in you, and in my porch, if my luck holds.

I just hope it doesn’t deceive some massage client into thinking I’m ethereal and gentle just before I drill my elbow into their butt.

Namaste, y’all.
