La data del 25 dicembre per la natività di Gesù fu una scelta della chiesa cattolica per inglobare i culti pagani, assorbirli e farli dimenticare. Il 25 dicembre era un giorno di festa importante per i popoli, religioni e culture molto distanti fra di loro, ma unite da questa ricorrenza, che celebrava sotto nomi diversi uno stesso significato: la fine dell’inverno e la rinascita della vita. L’uomo antico si sentiva parte della natura e guardava al sole come ad una delle principali fonti della creazione e come la potenza regolatrice dello scorrere delle stagioni. Il 25 dicembre segnava la festa del sole “invictus” il sole invincibile, poiché dopo il solstizio d’inverno del 21 dicembre, il giorno più corto con al notte più lunga, la luce riprendeva la sua vita, vinceva la tenebra, fino ad arrivare al 21 giugno, dove il giorno era più lungo della notte. Con questo significato simbolico il 25 dicembre era associato nel mondo antico, alla nascita o alla festa di personaggi divini: il dio Horus egiziano, raffigurato con sua madre Iside che lo teneva in braccio ( ricorda l’iconografia cristiana della Madonna col Bambino). Il dio Mitra indo-persiano, anche lui partorito da una vergine, e che veniva chiamato “il salvatore”. Il dio babilonese Shamash che era il dio del Sole e della predizione perché il sole vede tutto: passato, presente e futuro; il dio Tammuz sempre babilonese nasceva anche lui in questo giorno e anche lui moriva per resuscitare dopo tre giorni. La scelta del 25 dicembre fu un tentativo riuscito della Chiesa di Occidente di adattare gli antichi culti, con i loro rituali alla nuova religione; invece la Chiesa di Oriente scelse la data del 6 gennaio per la nascita di Gesù, per differenziarsi dagli antichi culti, e tuttora le chiese copta, armena e ortodossa festeggiano la natività in questo giorno.

Durante il pontificato di papa Leone Magno (440-461) venne sancita definitivamente questa data come “il Natale di Gesù”, nel 536 d.C. l’imperatore Giustiniano chiuse l’ultimo tempio di Iside in Egitto ed il Natale si affermò come festa cristiana in tutto l’impero. Le tradizioni dell’albero di Natale e del presepio invece hanno una storia più semplice. L’albero apparteneva all’immaginario collettivo nordico come simbolo della vita e della fertilità, ma la tradizione dell’albero addobbato così come la conosciamo noi, la dobbiamo ad una invenzione del 1500 del protestante Martin Lutero, che alla notte della Vigilia, si trovò fuori sulla neve e vide gli abeti ghiacciati risplendere sotto la luce della luna, questo spettacolo gli piacque così tanto da voler provare a riprodurlo e per questo adornò un abete con candele e nastri luccicanti. Questa usanza fu introdotta nell’Europa del sud nel 1840, dalla moglie del duca di Orléans, Elena di Maclenburg, che fra la sorpresa della corte, lo fece preparare nei giardini delle Tuileries. Il presepe è una usanza solo cristiana, derivata da una rappresentazione che San Francesco fece per la prima volta a Greccio (Rieti) nel 1223, ispirandosi ad una tradizione del IX secolo, che rievocava scene evangeliche, attraverso rappresentazioni viventi e aggiungendovi scene pastorali.

La cometa sul presepe comparve solo dopo il 1301, infatti quell’anno apparve per la prima volta quella, che poi venne definita come “la cometa di Halley”, i contemporanei ne furono molto colpiti, e Giotto, il grande pittore, in un suo quadro nella cappella degli Scrovegni, dipingendo l’Epifania, sopra la Capanna pose questa stella per ricordare ai posteri l’avvenimento.

Babbo Natale invece, pur avendo alle spalle una tradizione che trova le sue radici su San Nicola Vescovo di Mira in Asia Minore, è molto prosaicamente l’invenzione di un grafico pubblicitario americano, per lanciare in modo accattivante il prodotto della Coca Cola di cui il povero Babbo Natale portava i colori, rosso e bianco. Infine il Vischio, simbolo di buon auspicio e di fortuna, va ricondotto ai riti della fertilità, poiché la rinascita aveva bisogno di procreazione. Le tribù germaniche consideravano chiunque passasse sotto il vischio “ baciato” dalla dea Freya, la dea della fertilità, ecco perché per l’anno nuovo ci baciamo sotto il vischio!

One of my favorite “art’ forms is the art of espresso making.  Most of us know that we choose our favorite coffee shop for it’s flavors, aromas, ambiance, and convenient location.  Another reason, for me, was the well-trained barista at my favorite shop.  He could make the most consistent, perfect shots topped with a rich crema and he knew how to make the cool designs on top with the froth that topped my drinks.

The Pirate King by R. A. Salvatore- This is the second book in the Transitions trilogy. It picks up a few years after the events in The Orc King. The stories main focus is on the ever popular, Drizzt Do’Urden, Captain Deudermont, and the fate of the city of Luskan. As I mentioned, The Orc King was the first book while the third book, The Ghost King, is due out in October 2009.

Captain Deudermont, the captain of the Sea Sprite and a famous pirate hunter, learns that the controller of some of the pirates on the Sword Coast is in the city of Luskan. So Deudermont takes the fight to Luskan, hoping at the same time to improve the conditions there. At the same time, Drizzt Do’Urden and Regis the halfling set out to visit Wulfgar in Icewind Dale. During the duos travel, they stop in Luskan to find that Deudermont beginning his fight. The duo stay to help him out. Does Deudermont succeed and if so, does Luskan welcome him as there savior? Or are there others that are in control of the events taking place?

Negatives:
1) “Hiding” certain characters. About halfway through the novel, you know who these characters are, yet they aren’t mentioned by name and don’t get mentioned until the last 3 chapters. Honestly, what was the point to drag out naming them? I don’t think it served any real big purpose and it certainly wasn’t suspenseful.
2) The actions of Deudermont. This is what really bothered me about this book. Deudermont is, or has been, very noble and full of insight and understanding. I just felt that all his wisdom and insight was just thrown out, and a sense of “I must do the right thing” and “I can fix this!” attitudes were inserted. Basically, I couldn’t see Deudermont doing what he did after taking down the “controller of the pirates.” Granted, it wasn’t a bad thing Deudermont did, but rather so out of character and just the fact that he didn’t realize what was going on really got to me.
3) Forced parts. There were a few parts that I felt forced, and unnecessary. For example, the first time we see Wulfgar and he is yelling,”I am Icewind Dale.” One, it was very stupid and reminded me of some bad movie dialogue. Two, I don’t think it served a big purpose. Sure it set up where he was and how he got it, but for some reason it annoyed me. Then there were some other scenes in this book that I similar thought pointless and just didn’t fit.

Positives:
1) Conditions of Luskan. I thought that the way that Luskan was described after the “battle” was great. It really made you picture the hardships of the people and the desperation they had.
2) Deudermont’s fate. What happens to Deudermont was unexpected, yet perfect. I didn’t expect him to do what he did, yet what happens to him still came as a total shock, even though I knew before reading this book. It was sudden and just jaw dropping, because you never expect a well known character to leave like that.
3) Characterization of Drizzt and Regis. There were parts of this story that added new dimensions to Drizzt and Regis. For instance, when in Icewind Dale, and the feeling of “rightness” that they feel by being there just added something new and interesting in my eyes. The only thing I didn’t care for though, was Regis seemed to whine a lot. It wasn’t bad, but his whining served a purpose and made you look into Regis’ thoughts and how he feels about certain events happening.

Overall: 3.5/5
*Why so low? At times the story and some characters actions didn’t fit. Not only that but, the story didn’t seem complete, and it seemed to lack something. Also, I didn’t feel blown away by most of the events in this book. However, I’m a Drizzt fan, and always will be. I did like the book, but not enough that I thought it was great. It just seemed mediocre.*

A few times each year, I visit family in Wisconsin.  It’s been getting easier in the past couple of years to find good espresso places back there, but I had to convince my daughter that lots of money could be saved if she would just make her morning latte’s at home as we do in Washington.

I may have outgrown my Espresso machine.  Don’t get me wrong, I love my current system with its simplicity, its ease and the great coffee.  I guess I’m yearning for more control of the coffee bean, the flow of the water, the extraction, the temperature, the capacity, etc.  – in short, a perfect cup of espresso for all my perfect guests, all at the perfect time.

I’ve been looking at the various espresso machines and it looks like The La Pavoni has it all – it’s the best of the best, the “Crema de la Crema” if ou will.  The La Pavoni is a great choice.

Anyhow, one of my main complaints about my current system is its inability to produce volume.  I throw lots of parties and when it comes to the final course of the evening, desserts and espresso, by the time I get to the last guest (usually me), the first guests (usually my brothers) are already asking for another cup.  Sheez.

So the good news is that a couple of websites, especially this one, have all the answers to my questions about the next step up.  With the amount of money I’m considering shelling out for the next step up, I’m not taking this investment lightly.  I want the best advice, with the best follow-up service.
