Material recovery for flooded Lake District

With all the usual suspects, the evening dinner hosted by Clive and Pamela Wilson (WRS) at the Cavendish Hotel Cartmel for Salvo, was elevated by the attendance of Dan Hill from Tiger Enterprises who had travelled to the flooded areas of the Lake District to advise on material recovery. Specifically, Dan was helping local people to set up Reuse Centres for salvageable recovered goods, damaged by the flooding of the previous week.

It was great to witness the enthusiasm of Dan and his brother Ryan in their determination to be positive in the face of desperate and, what for many, would be overwhelming odds.

They were busy persuading others that, in a week or two, the salvaged building materials set aside could be a valuable resource in the recovery process. Perhaps insurance companies would benefit from expert technical advisors from within the reclamation industry acting to demonstrate best practice for higher recovery levels of materials.

Dan (pictured) said it was very sad to see so much material just being skipped for speed, rather than a little forethought to encourage recovery.

El incidente, ocurrido el jueves, fue  grabado por una de las cámaras de la estación. Las imágenes muestran cómo la madre se sienta en una silla a esperar el tren y percibe demasiado tarde que el coche empezó a rodar.

La madre se levanta velozmente para frenar el coche-cuna, pero éste cae al borde de la vía pocos segundos antes de que el tren entra en la estación.

El bebe sufrió una contusión leve en la cabeza, y el coche terminó a 30 de metros de distancia del lugar en el que cayó.

It is possible that my father invented recycling. Well, he never met an object he couldn’t find another use for. He had always been that way, but really came into his own in Birmingham where he had an entire basement just waiting for his books, found objects and doodads.

Dad worked in the basement Saturday mornings, so he did the washing. For several years, the detergent of choice was Salvo, hard tablets about 3″ in diameter that never dissolved completely and left granules on everything. However, they came in boxes that could be used for Dad’s filing system.

He kept everything anyone ever sent him, letters, postcards, as well as the To: and From: tags on birthday and Christmas presents.  After he died, my sister, brother and I were given the boxes in which he had kept our letters. I found a Mother’s Day card I had made while in elementary school, as well as a note I’d written during one visit to their office. I must have been learning to write in script, as opposed to block letters, since every letter was in a capitalized script.

Not only did he keep everything, but he collected other things. He had hundreds of short yellow pencils used to keep score for golf, along with the remnants of my soap collection and my brother’s matchbook collection from his travels. Because he was interested in everything, Dad also kept clippings on topics he found interesting, such as painting.

From April through October, our area comes alive with tag sales, yard sales, flea markets, whatever you call it. I think all of us are grateful that sales such as this were not popular during Dad’s lifetime. As it was, Mother lost as many battles as she won as to what he could and could not keep in the house.

When we moved into the Birmingham house, Mother and Dad agreed that he would finish a section of the basement as a study and keep all of his book in that room. He created his study, built bookshelves and loaded them up. After several years, however, a glass front lawyer’s bookcase appeared in the den, soon followed by a second, then a third. Finally, he built a wooden bookshelf that went along the side of the room. By the time we left for college, Dad had conquered the family room completely. Since he could not throw away books, they were everywhere, and Mother capitulated.

When we moved to Birmingham, Dad took over as head of Howard College’s extension department, doing similar work to what he did in Jackson, but on a much smaller scale. Instead of traveling all over the U.S., he drove all over Alabama. And he found things to bring home from all over Alabama. Anything might catch his eye.

Once he passed a rock in south Alabama he thought would be perfect for a project he had in mind. Dad stopped and tried to lift it, but found it was embedded in the soil, so the next time he drove by, he had a shovel. His plan was to dig it up, put it in his trunk and continue on to his appointment.

Unfortunately, the rock was much bigger than he originally thought and most of it was buried. He dug and dug and dug, sweating so much that he was not presentable by the time he gave up. Dad drove to a nearby gas station, called his appointment and rescheduled. He turned around and came home, arriving earlier and looking far worse than Mother anticipated.  His story about the rock did nothing to calm her, and it became one of our family stories, the moral of which is things are not always what they seem.

Because I collect postcards, when Dad passed away, I received his collection. He sent each of us postcards from the places he visited, so I pulled out the ones for my sister and brother for them. The ones for my mother are intensely romantic, sweet, and private. His family must have known he collected postcards, but a number of them were written to his mother and father, some to my mother’s parents. Some of the cards are from the 1930’s and 40’s, the majority from the 1950’s.

Dad is most famous, however, for hoarding tiny bits of string he didn’t use in projects.  If he needed a 10″ length, but only used 8″, he saved the extra 2″ in a box. My sister has the box now, clearly labeled “string too short to save.”

Un bi-libro che nasce con due contenuti diversi ma con un unico autore Salvo Gcraci e presentato nelle scorse settimane presso la biblioteca Nino Muccioli alla Zisa. “Nella facciata A – come lo stesso autore ci precisa – sono presenti tutta una serie di racconti. Nella facciata B invece una raccolta di poesie”. Ma perchè questa esigenza di un bi-libro: “nasce dal fatto – precisa Geraci – dalla necessita di dover concludere presto i miei lavori. le poesie e i racconti che forse sarebbero dovuti diventare un romanzo. Io li ho messi tutti insieme, cosi ho pensato se mi fosse accaduto qualcosa, sarei stato in tempo nel lasciare un ricordo di me ai miei figli, ai miei nipoti, ed ai miei amici”.

Una pubblicazione dai messaggi forti è la tempra di clolui che l’ha scritta. “Nelle poesie – incalza Geraci – ci sono tanti messaggi di natura anche diversa, che riguardano l’interiorita e la complessita dell’uomo il tutto scansionato millimetre per millimetre in maniera da fare venire fuori passo dopo passo un sentimento diverso”. “Nell’altra parte del libro intitolato “l’Onorevole” sono presenti tutta una serie di esperienze mie di vita. Con 1′Onorevole Salvo Geraci ha messo a frutto i suoi passati da consulente alla Presidenza della Regione, a Ministri ad Assessori, e soprattutto la sua vita dietro le quinte. Tutte esperienze che gli hanno permesso di vedere e scoprire tante cose, spaccati di vita che Geraci ha sapientemente trascritto nella sua opera. Un discorso che non fa una grinza e che dovremmo ricordare più spesso ogni volta che chiamiamo un politico…”onorevole!”

The patient is an 80 y/o woman with known sick sinus syndrome, aortic sclerosis, aortic valve insufficiency, mitral valve insufficiency, tricuspidal valve insufficiency and left ventricular hypertrophy.

About the sick sinus syndrome and the tachy-brady syndrome

There are two types of Sick Sinus Syndrome (SSS): one with and one without associated tachyarrhythmias. SSS is due to many mechanisms related to SA-nodal failure, and in many patients with the syndrome more than one of the mechanisms are present. The most common mechanisms for SSS are severe, persistent sinus bradycardia, sinus arrest, both brief and sustained, with or without initiation of escape pacemakers, sometimes resulting in sustained asystole. Both Stokes-Adams attacks and sudden death is seen with SSS. When SSS is associated with tachyarrhytmhias, this is called the tachy-brady syndrome. Tachy-brady syndrome occurs in more than half of the patients with SSS.¹  The tachy-brady syndrome itself is not a specific condition, but more of a mixture of combinations of arrhythmias. I find it confusing that even the most profilic authors on this subject, as both Marriott² and Chou¹, tend to disagree on whether SSS should be considered part of the tachy-brady syndrome or vice versa. However, there seems to be consistency upon the fact that SSS can occur in two forms, with our without the associated tachycardias. Furthermore the tachy-brady syndrome is usually described as the condition where a tachycardia mechanism is directly associated with the mechanism of a bradycardia or the other way around. One author³ also differentiates between a tachy-brady syndrome and a brady-tachy syndrome, depending on what mechanism that initiates the next.

This series of telemetry strips from the patient described above, show the tachy-brady syndrome in action, manifested by a large and complex cascade of arrhythmic events. Note that there is a baseline first degree AV block at approximately 260 ms.

Note that each strip is not an exact continuation of the strip before it, meaning that i.e. strip number 2 can repeat some of the events in strip 1.

Top strip: After 4 cycles of sinus bradycardia (43 bpm), atrial flutter occurs. The atrial rate is approximately 260 bpm, and 2:1 AV conduction occurs, resulting in a ventricular rate of 130 bpm. There are F waves (flutter waves) superimposed on each T wave.

Middle strip: Note that this strip is not an exact continuation of strip 1. The first 12 beats are the same. It shows however the atrial flutter persisting with the same AV ratio for several seconds.

Bottom strip: After a while, 4:1 conduction occurs for one cycle. The next cycle is interrupted by a PVC triplet, or a short run of ventricular tachycardia (VT). After the ventricular triplet, the AV node alternates with 2:1 and 3:1 conduction.

Top strip: Atrial flutter still persists, while 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 AV conduction occurs successively, before a four beat salvo of premature ventricular contractions occur. Such a salvo would also be considered non-sustained ventricular tachycardia. Following the salvo, AV ratio continues to vary and also with higher degrees of block. 2:1, 3:1 4:1 and 5:1 AV block occurs successively towards the end of the strip.

Middle strip: This strip is almost a repetition of the top strip, and can be ignored.

Bottom strip: Here we can see that even higher degree of AV block occurs, with AV ratio as high as 6:1 before progressively decreasing again.

Top strip: This strip is recorded at 50mm/s, and shows the baseline atrial flutter being conducted with high degrees of AV block, and interrupted by a 5-beat run of ventricular tachycardia at 140 bpm.

Middle strip: Various degrees of AV block are seen throughout the strip. The deep, negative deflection towards the end is due to a loose electrode.

Bottom strip: AV block continues to vary, here mostly between a 2:1 and 3:1 ratio.

Then we’ll be stearing the ship back to Ireland for some reviews of two brand new Irish comics – Gar Shanley and Salvo’s Windell Classics Compendium and Paul Maxell’s A Murdering Spree and then it’s off to Animation Island to get the low down on Coraline 3D and also Studio AKA’s adaptation of Oliver Jeffers children’s book Lost and Found on DVD. And finally we pick out the jewels of the (News) Treasure Chest to talk about the latest in casting of Kenneth Branagh’s Thor and Kevin Smith’s Green Hornet comic and we promise no more nautical references from here on in! Yar. ahem.
