It’s a peculiar thing that, aside from diva dancefloor anthems, electronic songs rarely feature skilled vocalists. Sam Sparro, on the other hand, has a powerhouse set of pipes and has no qualms about mingling with synths and beats galore. His best song, “Black & Gold,” even goes one step further, combining not just a great beat and a great voice, but truly thoughtful lyrics as well.  The “you” in this song is not a lover as one might think, but rather God, while the lyrics reference evolution and the frightening emptiness of the universe. I don’t personally feel the same as Sparro (“If you’re not really here / Then I don’t want to be either”), but I can certainly understand the sentiment of wanting to find your place in the world and fearing that evertyhing is  “all just a bunch of matter.” Overall, this is just a great song from a very promising new artist. I can’t wait to hear more.

I have absolutely fallen in love with the song “Soles of Fire.” It was another one of the songs on Theophilus London’s Diesel radio show/playlist. The beat is unique and everything about it catchy. It has a watering dripping sound to it and then about 3 other layers of music to it. Basically polyrythmns at their best. Each verse is hot and the chorus is great. Some have said it’s a subliminal message to buy Ronson’s  shoes for Gucci.

“Can’t wear me down, I won’t get tired, I’ve ran so far, my soles on fire.”

The Chauffeurs are like a dream team for music. They include Theophilus London, Mark Ronson and Sam Sparro. The only name that isn’t that well-known, at least to me, is Sparro. He is an Australian singer-songwriter and producer. But Ronson is basically a producer God and Theophilus is a big up-and-coming rapper/singer…if you want to call him that.
I’ve already heard one sample of it and I must say it was good. Probably going to hear more.

anyway, according to ronson:

I created the music with a Fictional supergroup we put together called Chauffeur. The band is Sam Sparro, Theophilus London, and Tommy and Victor from the Dap Kings. It’s cool—the sound is very ’80s and luxurious. It’s like what you would imagine a Gucci record to sound like.

This is my new favorite song right now. I heard this song on last week’s performance episode of So You Think You Can Dance. Tabitha and Napoleon choreographed an amazing hip hop piece for Ariana and Peter (Ariana would be eliminated at the end of the show).

The song Black and Gold is sung by Sam Sparro, an Australian singer who is currently signed to UK record label Island Records.

This song if off his 2008 debut self-titled record.

how many hip-hopping dudes can you name that are fans of the smiths? well there’s theophilus london… and… err… that’s all i got! i first became aware of theophilus london, after hearing his wonderful reworking of ’sabali’ by african blues duo amadou and miriam. the track, titled ‘grey x sage’ appears on his second mixtape, this charming mixtape, along with 17 other songs which sees him mashup everything from bill withers to whitney houston and includes the guest services of lykke lee on one track. now there’s not many people who can use a whitney houston song, and still look cool, but mr london can (yes, theophilus london is his real name). infact, theophilus has been refining his cool, he is actually rather photo shoot friendly! just see for yourself, i challenge you to find a photo of him where he’s not looking like the most fastidious man on the globe.

im sure we’ll be seeing alot more of theo over the years; in just the last two, he has released two mixtapes, jam! (2008), this charming mixtape (2009), and his first studio album, this charming man, dropped in april this year. not to mention his latest work, a collaborative project with mark ronson, sam sparro, and victor & thomas, called chauffeur (do i have to say he’s freindly with passion pit, and touring with jack peñate, and remixed peñate’s ‘pull my heart away’ too). hence, the fact that theophilus london’s fame is quickly rising, best you jump on the bandwagon now people!

“My b” guys…  CMJ [and midterms :/] turned me out this past week. Got much to catch up on, but this one–I just couldn’t wait.

Chauffeur “the blazing lovechild of Sam Sparro, Theophilus London, Thomas Brenneck, Victor Axelrod & myself” [(c) Mark Ronson] did a couple of shows this week, the last at the Fader Fort (outside of which I stood in the pouring rain for over an hour, hoping that the Chauffeur set would start late enough for me to get in, only to eventually leave after seeing Theophilus London come out the back..but I’m not bitter).

The track was made to support the campaign of Mark Ronson’s Gucci sneaker, and the vinyl of “Soles Of Fire” will be given with each purchase. This looks pretty Limited Edition, but I’m guessing that this won’t be the last we hear from Chauffeur after this track blows up.

A few years ago I happened to walk past one of those awful “Hip-Hop” themed mall stores. You know the ones…they sell knockoff Ecko and sweatpants that say “Flava” written on the ass…So as I walked by I heard a Jay-Z song I had never heard before. The production I thought was beautiful and his lyrical content had me like salivating. I kept walking, got home, and regretted not knowing the song title. I literally called the store and made some cashier hear me hum this song. She had no clue. I scoured the internets, and after going through every song in the Hovi catalog I learned the song was “Beach Chair”. Most people hate that song, but it’s my favorite Jay song, so…suck it. I tell that story to say this…there are only certain circumstances to which I go insane to know a song title. Another was “Boomerang” by Cirrus. The most recent example happened this evening. I was having dinner with my love at The Music Trail and this song started playing. A cover of Sam Sparro’s “Black and Gold”, only fortified with kickassness. So yeah, Maniacal Me got the restaurant manager to find it for me. Ellie Goulding cover of “Black and Gold”. I think it trumps the original. You be the judge…
