Show: Samantha Who? Character: Samantha Newly Played Oh-So-Winningly By: Christina Applegate In a Nu

Show: Samantha Who?

Character: Samantha Newly

Played Oh-So-Winningly By: Christina Applegate

In a Nutshell: There are two Samantha Newly’s, actually. The first is who Sam used to be- the selfish, bitchy, cutthroat 30 year-old vice president of a real estate company who lives to torment the little people who deign to live at her feet. Fortunately, for all of mankind, that Sam suffers a hit-and-run accident and then retrograde amnesia, forcing her to start living with a clean slate. Without all the hang-ups that led her to be the world’s biggest bully, Sam is now as sweet and guileless as can be (though not as “special” as that photo on the left would suggest), with the occasional horrifying flash of her old self. As the (short-lived. I hate you, ABC) series progresses, Sam is faced with more and more memories and constantly struggles with being the kind of good person she wants to be, all while traces of her old selfishness and vanity keep popping up at every turn. Along for the ride are her long-suffering ex-boyfriend/roommate Todd, old friend Dena who is well-meaning but exactly that type of woman you avoid at the dog park, her best friend Andrea (who loved the old, bitchy Sam), and her awesomely hilarious parents Howard and Regina (Jean Smart, who is on the list “Actors Who Should Star in Absolutely Everything”). Oh, and her doorman Frank who absolutely reviles her after years of brutal mistreatment from the old Sam.

Why We’ll Never Forget (Too much?): Oh, SAM. A high-concept like this could’ve been such a disaster but Samantha Who? made it work. A lot of that credit goes to the strong writing and the fantastic supporting characters but don’t underestimate Christina Applegate’s performance. As Sam, she’s an old-fashioned screwball comedy ingenue (I mean, really. Shouldn’t she have been forced to leave Ingenue Town a decade ago? Apparently not), eagerly hopping through the fast-paced episodes and the comical misunderstandings and embarrassing situations that hit her from every direction. In Applegate’s hands, Sam is adorable and funny and nowhere near as cloying as she could be- the flashes of horrible old Sam (with her pin-straight hair and killer short skirts, bad Sam actually looks a lot like you’d imagine Kelly Bundy would turn out if she had money. Maybe she should work for a fashion designer! I hear referee-style school uniforms are hot these days) are definitely a help, especially when they lead to new Sam’s equally horrified reaction to them.

Favorite Moments: Do yourself a favor and just watch. everything.

This happens to all of my favorite shows. It started with Daria, then Freaks and Geeks, then America

This happens to all of my favorite shows. It started with Daria, then Freaks and Geeks, then American Dreams, then Arrested Development, then Swingtown, then Hole in the Wall, and now this.

With ABC’s recent cancelation of Samantha Who? I am left scavenging the syndicated clips of Married with Children from afternoon cable programming for my Christina Applegate fix.

Christina Applegate is best known for her roles as ditzy blondes like Kelly of Married with Children; but based on movies like Don’t tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, where Applegate’s summer is ruined after she hides the death of her babysitter and she is left to raise her siblings herself all break. She supports the ungrateful crew by lying her way to the top of a big design company, ala Michael J. Fox in The Secret of my Success, I know she is more than the quintessential early ’90s airhead.

Seeing Applegate’s genuine and flawless performance in Sweet Charity on Broadway in 2005 confirmed it for me, Christina Applegate is one of the greatest gifts television has given the American public. Miss Applegate, I miss your eternal gum gnawing, your glamour shots female mullet and your avant-garde problem solving skills.

Christina Applegate, I miss your face- Shassie

The Big Bang Theory - Jim Parsons como Sheldon Cooper

Flight Of The Conchords Jemaine Clement como Jemaine

Monk Tony Shalhoub como Adrian Monk

The Office Steve Carell como Michael Scott

Two And A Half Men Charlie Sheen como Charlie Harper

Tem Project Runway, American Idol, The Amazing Race, Top Chef e Dancing with the Stars.

É, acho que me decepcionarei hoje.

The last few posts I’ve made have been ‘emo-teen-depressing’ type. Totally the route that I’ve always avoided when I made a blog for myself. Oh wells. I am a teenager. Then, how about this time round I post something happy now?

Aidilfitri is not till tomorrow and I’m not sure if I’m relieved about it. Am totally looking forward to meeting my relatives when they come over. Hope I’ll learn more on my mum’s side, seeing that my family is on the other side of the island.

So I’ve noticed myself to be more outspoken and well, I guess you could say ‘bubbly’? Its more to make sure that whatever that happens between me and you doesn’t get awkward and that we’re comfortable around each other. Am still be looking forward to meeting the cousins. There’s so much to catch up on….

On the other note (here goes my emo teen rantings), I’ve just realised I’ll be biting off more than I can chew for my upcoming school semester. Sure I’ll have classes only once a week, yet, I still find myself being greedy. Already planning to work part-time during that semester. So while earning extra do’, of course I’ll take up driving. Driving lessons. Have yet to find a private instructor. And then there’s FYP. Major stuff going there since it counts as a grade by itself. Plus there’s the IG matters since everyone is falling out one by one and I’ll have to pick up where we left out with the help of good friends. I don’t think I’ll make it through without them. Lastly, there’s also the reason why I set up this wordpress account the first place. Twilight Singapore. I love what I do there but I’m just worried that I can’t commit at that period of time.

You know what, I shouldn’t be complaining now. I was suppose to write something much more jovial. Then, here enters HOLLYWOOD. Its that time of the month again for season premieres and new shows! HEHEHEHE…

A Man She Couldn’t Forget by Kathryn Shay

Harlequin Romance

Clare Boneli has felt like a stranger to herself ever since the night an accident took her memory. The night she made a choice between two very different men.

Both Brady Langston and Jonathan Harris are good men. But their versions of her are so opposite, it’s as if she’s two different people. One man holds her career future and one man seems to hold her heart. Because when she’s with Brady everything feels so true, so right. As she moves closer to the truth about that fateful night, Clare has to choose again. To stick with the life she’s made for herself. Or listen to what her heart’s been trying to tell her…

What a fantastic book. I found myself throughly engrossed by the story in A Man She Couldn’t Forget. As I read, I kept thinking about the television show Samantha Who? and her retrograde amnesia along with the movie Regarding Henry which the book refers to. Ms Shay did a fabulous job of research when it came to her subject matter. Not only about the subject of amnesia but also in regard to the recipes used as Clare cooked.

I liked the character of Clarissa Boneli. As I learned more about her, I truly began to care for her and her life. I hoped that she would continue to be nice and not go back to snubbing her family and friends. I wanted her to continue to pick her home life and what I thought was her ultimate happiness with her friends as opposed to her work and ambitions for a national television show. I liked how Clare was naturally drawn to Brady and how she learns of their friendship.

I thought Brady Langston was a dreamboat. He did everything for Clare after she had amnesia. After I learned how she had treated him previously, I was surprised that he let his love for her show in everything he did for her. Brady is too good to be true at times. I don’t know how he was able to hold back pushing Clare for a more intimate relationship or pressing his advantage when Jonathan wasn’t around. He not only loved Clare but he was a true friend through the entire story.

I thought Jonathan Harris was true to the character that was written for him. He loved Clare and wanted to do whatever he could to further her career and her life with him. Jonathan is not only rich and handsome but he is privileged and it shows in all that he does. I think Jonathan’s only fault is that he wants Clarissa to marry him and he doesn’t want to wait for her to regain her memory or share her with anyone.

I found all the character to be fully fleshed out and a vital part of the story whether they were a main character or a minor one. Little Donny Kramer played as important of a role in the story as Lillian or Lucinda. Anna Summers, as Clare’s doctor, is the perfect psychiatrist. As I said before, I could see the amount of research that went into this story.

I enjoyed the references throughout the book about contemporary times. There were references to J K Rowling, Paula Dean and even Wicked. These made the story more relevant for me and the recipes sounded delicious. Ms. Shay states on her livejournel that they are her own family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation and can be found on her website. What a generous gift to give all her readers.

I recommend reading this wonderful story about second chances, friends and lovers. I know A Man She Couldn’t Forget is one story that I won’t forget anytime soon.

NBC’s track record with adapting international series for American audiences has been rather hit or miss (Highs: The Office. Lows: Coupling. New Lows: Kath & Kim.) so the recent news that the peacock is set to adapt the groundbreaking UK drama series Prime Suspect is a bit…suspect.

The original ran in seven parts from 1991 to 2006 and starred Helen Mirren as lady-of-a-certain-age chief homicide detective Jane Tennison, a role that made waves when the series debuted as it was the first to feature a woman as the head of a murder investigation unit. A hit with critics, it earned Mirren two Emmy awards for lead actress in a miniseries and made her a household name in the US when it aired as part of PBS’s Mystery series.

With such a stellar pedigree, NBC should take measured steps to ensure that their Prime Suspect will have its own tone that sets it apart from workhorse Law & Order procedurals (no L&O: Across the Pond, thank you). The crux of the show’s success will be in casting the lead. Considering such an acclaimed and formidable actress originated the role, someone award-winning caliber must come on board to give the US version some clout in standing up (and out) to the plethora of other crime-centered dramas scattered around the dial, especially ones with strong female characters (NBC’s own Emmy-winning Mariska Hargitay, for example). American producers will no doubt want to sex up the role, which means skewing the age range down, considering the hesitancy to cast women over 40 in high-profile leads. This actress age-ism is a shame because, like a fine wine, the best only get better with time, and this kind of role demands someone who’s been around the block.

Topping my “For Your Consideration” list would be Jean Smart. While most well-known for comedy – first gaining recognition on Designing Women, but racking up 3 Emmy wins in the last decade for her guest role on Frasier and one for supporting actress playing Christina Applegate’s martini-swilling mother on Samantha Who? - she’s also proven a knack for the dramatics, and earned rave reviews, with her portrayal of the president’s unstable, whistle-blowing wife on the fifth season of 24.

Opening the forum for discussion: Who else is an ideal contender to take up the American “Queen” of police mantle?

The Husband:

While we, the children of Saint Clare, have found the time to write about many of the biggest shows on television (and even some small ones), there is only so much time and energy we can spend on this site. The truth is, we watch a whole lot more than what ends up on the site, and since I watch most of these on my own and yet never find the ability to write about them, their absence is mostly my fault. But no matter. For those that fall through the cracks, I have here a grab bag of the 30+ shows I watch in addition to whatever ends up on the site. These are the ones that slipped through the cracks. And hell, I’m sure there are more I’m forgetting (and also not even bothering writing about, which tend to fall under instructional/educational stuff like anything on Discovery), so if you think I’ve forgotten something, please let me know. (And no, I don’t watch any CSI or L&O shows, so don’t even try to get all up in my grill.) Here they are, the missing shows of the 2008-2009 television season, in alphabetical order.

24

I really should have written at least some criticism on this season, but work piled up and I simply didn’t have the time. It started off as the most intelligent season with some of the most compelling political questions being thrown around (welcome to the show finally, “debate on torture”), but by the fourth time Tony twisted his alliance and Jack was infected with the disease, I kind of stopped caring. Great first half of the season, though, and I think Renee is the best new character in a very long time.

Adult Swim (Xavier: Renegade Angel / Superjail! / Squidbillies / The Drinky Crow Show / Metalocalypse / Delocated / Robot Chicken / Etc.)

Thank you, young people of Adult Swim (who I have spent some time with, don’t forget) for freaking my mind week after week, and giving alternative comedy a major boost in America. And for freaking out my wife.

A beacon of normalcy in a world of wackiness.

Better Off Ted

It took me a couple episodes to latch onto the tone, but once I did I simply couldn’t get enough from this latest product of the mad mind of Victor Fresco. Check out some episodes online, then watch Andy Richter Controls the Universe (his previous show), and I guarantee you some of the oddest network comedy in a very long time. I still think Portia DeRossi is trying to hard, though, and should take a page from the book of Fresco mainstay Jonathan Slavin.

Castle

Bring it on, Nathan Fillion. Hypnotize me with your nostrils and your addictive but borderline-stupid mystery writer-cum-detective series. (Although how weird was that Judy Reyes episode? What the hell, Carla Turk?)

The Celebrity Apprentice 2

So sue me, I liked Joan Rivers. And the addition of the phrase “Whore Pit Vipers” to the television lexicon.

Celebrity Rehab (Sober House) with Dr. Drew

So help me, I can’t stop watching. It’s just a disaster. I will say, though, that I like the drama in the rehab far more than the sober house, as the latter seems to exist simply to destroy any progress the celebrities made in rehab. And now having seen all three of his seasons of Taxi, Jeff Conaway’s fall from grace is fishbowl television at its finest.

Dating in the Dark

Really fun, actually. I hope it gets a second season. I also hope that more matches will be made, and that people stop being massive failures.

Dirty Sexy Money

Everything I needed to say about the failure of the second season of this show can be found on this blog, and it ended its truncated run by turning itself inside-out by revealing that the show’s central mystery, who killed Peter Krause’s father, was a bust since he wasn’t dead after all. What the hell, Dirty Sexy Money? Oh well, your cancellation made room in Krause’s schedule for the much anticipated (by me) adaptation of Parenthood coming to NBC mid-season.

The Goode Family

It took a few episodes to find its footing, but by the end of its sped-up summer run, I was a major fan of the latest Mike Judge effort. (R.I.P. King of the Hill.) Vastly misunderstood by viewers who only watched the first episode, it, just like KOTH, found a middle ground between conservative America and liberal America and found the ability to make fun of both without drawing blood, choosing to love instead of hate. Some of the voice cast was misused (why was my beloved Linda Cardellini in the cast?), but as a Berkeley native, I had a blast relishing in mocking the stereotypes of my own people while rediscovering what it is I love so much about them. The bull dykes were also two of the most original characters of the season.

One Earth isn't just a grocery store, it's a way of life.

The Great American Road Trip

Any show that has two contestants debating over which is more correct, “y’all” or “youse,” gets major points in my book. A nice and forgettable summer trifle after a long, way-too-hot day. Silly, yes, but I can’t say it was bad. And it was a definite improvement over the similar family-based season of The Amazing Race. (I’m sure The Soup is really grateful for this show, too.)

Heroes

Oh god, kill me now. Volume 4 was a marked improvement over #3, for sure, but I just don’t care about anybody anymore. And yet I feel that I need to keep watching. It’s too late to give up now. There was one great episode this season, though, and that was the flashback one surrounding Angela Petrelli’s stint at a mutant internment camp. Why can’t they all be this good?

Howie Do It

Yeah, I watched it. Shut the fuck up. About one-third of it was funny, and as I watched it on Hulu at work, it’s not like I wasted any of my own time. Howie Mandel is savvier than you think, but I wish he would return to his wilder roots.

How’s Your News

This Parker-Stone produced MTV show revolving around reporters who are developmentally delayed confused the hell out of me initially, but once I realized there wasn’t a mean bone in its body it became a warm bit of fun. I want a second season, dammit. These are some of the most joyful television subjects I’ve ever seen.

I Survived a Japanese Game Show

Better than the first season, but I’m still glad I only watch this online while doing something else.

In the Motherhood

Worst opening credit sequence of the year. Some pretty funny material hidden underneath unfunny slapstick. Horatio Sanz got thin. Megan Mullally couldn’t find a rhythm. I still think Cheryl Hines is oddly hot.

Lie to Me

I unfortunately didn’t start watching this until July, and I wish I hadn’t waited so long. While gimmicky to a fault and not nearly as intelligent as it pretends it is, this Tim Roth vehicle about an FBI specialist who studies the subtleties of the face (OF THE FACE) is clever, compelling and well drawn. I’m not sure about the addition of Mekhi Phifer’s character, but we’ll see how it works out next season, especially with Shield creator Shawn Ryan at the helm of season two.

Life

This cancellation reallllly hurts. One of the unsung gems from the 2007-2008 television, this, the smartest network cop show in recent memory, took its great season one energy and hit the second season with all it had and came up with a compelling, hilarious, devilishly clever and gleefully violent run that was only marred by a major cast shift during the final few episodes. (I’m looking at you, Gabrielle Union. Your presence was what I like to call a massive failure.) A Zen-obsessed cop recently released from prison after serving over a decade for a murder he did not commit, this show had the best cases of them all. It also gave me one of my favorite hours of television of the year in an episode that revolved around a seductive assassin, fertilizer and pigeon aficionados. And at least the major serialized storyline (who framed Damien Lewis and why) got paid off in a major way thanks to the ever-reliable Garret Dillahunt.

My Boys

Putting PJ and Bobby together was a great idea, but your nine-episode seasons are too short to gain any momentum, and the spring training season finale was a bust.

Nitro Circus

Moronic glee.

Numb3rs

Man, did they put Charlie through the ringer. First, he nearly gets his brother killed with a miscalculation on his part, he questions his own validity as a mathematician and then Amita gets kidnapped just as he decides that he wants to marry her. Otherwise, another fine, if somewhat uneventful, of this show that never captured the glory of its über-nerdy first season. Also, thanks for all the great guest star work, but sometimes it gets laid on a little too thick, such as in “Sneakerhead” which brought together Bruno Campos, Patrick Bauchau, Dr. Edison from Bones and Eve. (And points for making the Liz Warner character actually bearable. I fucking hated her in season 4.

Privileged

So apparently the CW thought that their best idea ever was to get rid of this show, the smartest show on the UPN/WB merger since the Buffyverse, one that was technically pulling in bigger numbers than 90210, one that was a delight to watch and deeply addictive, and make room for what is sure to be one of 2009-2010’s worst new offerings, Melrose Place. I gotta tell ya, this cancellation hurts. While I wrote recaps and reviews of the episodes way into its freshman (and only) season, the looming axe, as well as a more heavily serialized structure, turned me off from writing on the final stretch of episodes, and I told myself that I’d only recap them if the show came back. Lo and behold, another Joanna Garcia vehicle has gone down the tubes. I’ll miss you oh so dearly, Ms. Too-Smart-For-The-CW Palm Beach satirical melodrama known as Privileged.

I hate to say this, guys, but I think Robert Buckley might be a showkiller. And that's sad, because he's so damn pretty.

Rescue Me

I thought it was a great season, and thanks to an extended number of episodes (it didn’t air in 2008 thanks to the writer’s strike), the show was able to focus much of its energy on pages-long dialogue-happy battle-of-wits in nearly episode, which to be is melodrama heaven. Gone is the maudlin tone, returned is all the comic energy, and the stories seem to actually progress instead of just flopping around like a dying fish. Leary and Tolan deserve major praise for bringing the show back up to snuff. And now having seen all of Newsradio, I love any chance I get to watch Maura Tierney, although I’m still not going to watch ER. (I am proud to have only seen three episodes of that show ever, being a Chicago Hope fan.) Special shot-out to the Sean cancer storyline, if only to allow Broadway actor Steven Pasquale (husband of Tony winner Laura Benanti) the opportunity to belt out some songs in a handful of hallucination scenes.

Samantha Who?

One of the biggest upsets of the last two years was the rise and fall of this light-hearted, occasionally gut-busting amnesia sitcom that started off the talk of the town, only to waste away its final episodes after the conclusion of the actual television season. Ending on a shitty cliffhanger (Sam’s parents are getting divorced, so Mom is going to live with you and your formerly-estranged-but-now-love-of-your-life lover), we nevertheless found out who caused the accident that brought about Sam’s amnesia, Jennifer Esposito finally made it with the towel boy, and Melissa McCarthy continued to be one of the brightest stars of the year.

Scrubs

Like Privileged, I hesitated to continue writing due to the threat of its cancellation, but now it’s continuing on into yet another season (albeit with some major changes), so I really have no reason to stop writing about it. But let’s just say that while the hurry-up to conclude its many disparate storylines often felt rushed (those two Bahama episodes felt especially odd), the conclusion to J.D.’s years-in-the-telling tale was a lovely way to conclude the season. (No props for the awful awful Peter Gabriel song that accompanied his final walk down the hallway, as laughably bad as it was when I heard it in the remake of Shall We Dance?)

The Shield

I don’t have to tell you how amazing the final season was. Watch it. Seriously. You owe it to yourself to experience one of the hardest hitting cop shows of all time. Like The Wire, a Greek tragedy hammered into modern-day policework with some of the most finely drawn characters around. And oh man, did those final three episodes pack a major punch. Ouch, indeed.

Southland

Quite a bit like The Shield, really, had it followed Michael Jace’s beat cop instead of the Strike Team. A little too dour at times for me to really give a crap, and the sprawling ensemble needs to be cut down (which is what I hear it’s doing for the second season), but this L.A.-centered procedural has a lot going for it, not least of which its pitch-perfect direction. (I especially dig the long shots, including my favorite, which involved a cabin and a K9 unit bringing down a perp.)

Way better than dating Marissa Cooper.

Surviving Suburbia

A sitcom in serious need of finding one tone and sticking with it, this sometimes-sweet-sometimes-brutally-cruel suburban comedy worked as well as it did because of Saget as well as G. Hannelius’ performance as the precocious daughter. Still, all the jokes about disabled people, pregnant teenagers and strip clubs really didn’t mesh together with the clichés of the genre.

Survivor: Tocantins

I love Survivor, but this was one of the most boring seasons in its ten-year run. I don’t think I gave a shit about one person, and I simply couldn’t find anything compelling to write about. A waste of a good location.

True Beauty

The right person won, the losers got (mostly) schooled in this trick show designed to expose the douchery involved in modeling, Ashton Kutcher made another heroin-like show, and I concern myself for months with how they can pull the trick off a second time in the next season.

The Unusuals

When grading a cop show, I tend to focus on three things — the tone, the characters and the cases. A bizarre, pessimistic yet comedic take on all those wacky cops we’ve seen throughout the years all thrown together (one is deathly afraid of…death, one has a brain tumor, one talks in the third person, one is a closeted socialite, etc.) pushed into some remarkably dark territory, The Unusuals had tone and characters down pat, but suffered at the hands of some DOA storylines. But oh man, did the tone ever make up for most of the show’s shortcomings. Great ensemble cast, too, although I would have recast Eddie Alvarez.

Rather unusual.

Worst Week

A breezy and often hilarious slapstick comedy based off of a British hit, it could never regain its momentum after moving away from the initial “week” of the title. Kyle Bornheimer is a true find and made the more unbearable misunderstandings and embarrassing moments of the show (of which there were many) all the more palatable. I’m not the biggest fan of comedy based around humiliations, but this show found a likeable ability to have its characters not completely despise each other at every moment. This was, to say the least, very refreshing. Big points for giving me the biggest network TV laugh of the year (when Bornheimer wakes up his brother-in-law only to be thought a murderer) but major negative points for pushing back a major character-based episode into a weekend spot months after the show had already ended its run.

Samantha Who? got canceled and I truly enjoyed the show. Luckily, here’s The Complete Second and Fin

Samantha Who? got canceled and I truly enjoyed the show. Luckily, here’s The Complete Second and Final Season on DVD to enjoy. As Samantha Newly, Christina Applegate has great comedic appeal and her character and the premise of the show is really delightful. A stuck up, snobby girl gets amnesia and now is sweet and extremely likable, charitable even. She has frequent flashbacks to her old bitchy ways and cannot believe how she ever acted that way. Now she’s trying to right her past mistakes by being a better person, a better friend, and a better daughter. Whether she is dating an earthy-crunchy, eco-friendly architect, competing in a dance competition with her mother, finding out what her father really does at work (it’s very bloody), or taking a road trip to her old summer vacation spot in the middle of no where, Samantha is completely unpredictable, has an infectious energy and keeps you guessing what she’ll do next.

Her best friend, social status-obsessed lawyer Andrea [Jennifer Esposito] spends the season in a faux relationship with a gay basketball star Tony Dane [McKinley Freeman]. Her other friend from high-school Dena [Melissa McCarthy] is sweet, quirky and devoted to Samantha. She re-surfaced in Samantha’s life when she had amnesia. Jean Smart [Designing Women], perfectly cast as her mom, tears up the small screen, as often selfish and always hysterical. Sam’s snugly dad [Kevin Dunn] unconditionally adores Samantha. Adding drama to Samantha’s already conflict-filled life, she lives with her ex-boyfriend Todd [Barry Watson]. Are they over each other for good? The pair goes back and forth as they both try to move on and date other people but always get drawn back to each other. Samantha’s rich ex-boss Winston Funk [Billy Zane] sends Todd away to London but the distance cannot keep the pair apart and despite the charm Winston pours on, Samantha knows he’s just not Todd. Both Todd and Winston want Samantha. Who will she choose?

It is really too bad that so many mediocre shows remain on television but a unique, radiant, female-driven comedy like Samantha Who? gets canceled. I’m so disappointed. Christina Applegate deserves roles like this one: conflicted characters who are strong inside and have the capacity to accomplish so much if they set out to do it. She is not only a beautiful and charming woman but she is winning and devoted to her friends and family. It’s not something that you see all the time on television. Having played the bimbo role [very well and very tongue-in-cheek on Married with Children], Applegate did not settle for something easy. She has much more going for her than that. I adore her. I find her compelling and truly a special comedic talent. Filling the void left by Samantha Who? will not be easy. ABC made a monumental mistake.

As an aside: As there’s a popular show out there right now called Drop Dead Diva that focuses on weight, I wanted to compare “Jane” to the plus-size gal on Samantha Who? Dena [McCarthy] is definitely chunky but she hardly lets it keep her down. She dresses appropriately. Dena frequents bars and clubs with Samantha and Andrea. She’s not afraid to speak her mind and she and her boyfriend adore each other. Sure, sometimes she gets down about things but the show never makes a huge issue out of her weight and she doesn’t have major image issues at every turn.

DVD Extras: Christina Applegate takes us on a set tour, bloopers and deleted scenes.

Some days I feel like a friggin TV junkie even though I don’t really log that many hours on the couch. But I’m looking forward to a lot of things coming soon. DVDs that I need to invest in… already on the shelf we have Gossip Girl Season 2, Eli Stone Season 2, and Pushing Daisies Season 2. Coming Soon we have House, One Tree Hill, Samantha Who, Smallville, Scrubs, Heroes, Supernatural, My Name is Earl, 30 Rock, Ugly Betty, Castle, How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, and Mister Ed Season 1. Which means all the new seasons will be starting soon. I also have a few I catch just on TV including Two and A Half Men, Criminal Minds, and NCIS. I think it is time to pay my late fee at Family Video so I can get the 1/2 off deal to rent everything. Ideally I hit the lottery and can purchase them all but I don’t see that happening. Any of the above mentioned are great ideas for birthday and Christmas Presents… haha. I don’t know how I feel about the new NCIS coming this fall with LL Cool J. I love my Michael Weatherly and Mark Harmon in the original. I do not think I will be giving them up. I’m also looking forward to Accidentally on Purpose or whatever that new Jenna Elfman show is called. And Vampire Diaries starting on the CW. Maybe I will give my mom extra rent money to get me DVR in my room. (I havent even asked her to put a sattellite box down here yet).

Las comedias románticas nos engañan. Deberíamos llevarlas a juicio.

Fall Season 2009/2010

Domingo, 2 de Agosto

Defying Gravity, 1ª temporada (ABC)

Sexta, 7 de Agosto

Psych, 4ª temporada (USA)
Monk, 8ª temporada (USA)

Top Chef, 6ª temporada (Bravo)

Quinta, 20 de Agosto

Project Runway, 6ª temporada (Lifetime)

90210, 2ª temporada (CW)
Melrose Place (2009), 1ª temporada (CW)
Sons of Anarchy, 2ª temporada (FX)

Quarta, 9 de Setembro

America’s Next Top Model, 13ª temporada (CW)
Glee, 1ª temporada (FOX)

Quinta, 10 de Setembro

Supernatural, 5ª temporada (CW)
The Vampire Diaries, 1ª temporada (CW)

The Jay Leno Show, 1ª temporada (NBC)

Bones, 5ª temporada (FOX)
Community, 1ª temporada (NBC)
Fringe, 2ª temporada (FOX)
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, 5ª temporada (FX)
Parks and Recreation, 2ª temporada (NBC)
Survivor: Samoa (CBS)
The Office, 6ª temporada (NBC) – Comédia sofisticada.

Curb Your Enthusiasm, 7ª temporada (HBO)
Bored to Death, 1ª temporada (HBO)

Segunda, 21 de Setembro

Accidentally on Purpose, 1ª temporada (CBS)
The Big Bang Theory, 3ª temporada (CBS)
Castle, 2ª temporada (ABC)
CSI: Miami, 8ª temporada (CBS)
Dancing With the Stars, 9ª temporada (ABC)
Heroes, 4ª temporada (NBC)
Two and a Half Men, 7ª temporada (CBS)

The Forgotten, 1ª temporada (ABC)
The Good Wife, 1ª temporada (CBS)
NCIS, 7ª temporada (CBS)
NCIS: Los Angeles, 1ª temporada (CBS)

Quarta, 23 de Setembro

Cougar Town, 1ª temporada (ABC)
Criminal Minds, 5ª temporada (CBS)
CSI: NY, 6ª temporada (CBS)
Eastwick, 1ª temporada (ABC)
Gary Unmarried, 2ª temporada (CBS)
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, 11ª temporada (NBC)
Modern Family, 1ª temporada (ABC)
The New Adventures of Old Christine, 5ª temporada (CBS) – Outra que acompanho bem tangencialmente, mas, que, sempre, acabo gostando.
Parenthood, 1ª temporada (NBC)

Quinta, 24 de Setembro

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, 10ª temporada (CBS)
Flash Forward, 1ª temporada (ABC)
Grey’s Anatomy, 6 ª temporada (ABC)
The Mentalist, 2ª temporada (CBS)

Sexta, 25 de Setembro

Brothers, 1ª temporada (FOX)
Dollhouse, 2ª temporada (FOX)
Ghost Whisperer, 5ª temporada (CBS)
Law & Order, 20ª temporada (NBC)
Medium, 6ª temporada (CBS)
Numb3rs, 6ª temporada (CBS)

Southland, 2ª temporada (NBC)

Sábado, 26 de Setembro

Saturday Night Live, 35ª temporada (NBC)

Domingo, 27 de Setembro

The Amazing Race, 15ª temporada (CBS)
American Dad, 5ª temporada (FOX)

The Cleveland Show, 1ª temporada (FOX)
Cold Case, 7ª temporada (CBS)

Family Guy, 8ª temporada (FOX)

Lie to Me, 2ª temporada (FOX)
Trauma, 1ª temporada (NBC)

Quarta, 30 de Setembro

Hank, 1ª temporada (ABC)
The Middle, 1ª temporada (ABC)

Quinta, 1º de Outubro

Private Practice, 3ª temporada (ABC)

Sexta, 2 de Outubro

‘Til Death, 4ª temporada (FOX)
Stargate Universe, 1ª temporada (Syfy)

Terça, 6 de Outubro

Scare Tactics, 1ª temporada (Syfy)

Nip/Tuck, 6ª temporada (FX) – Acompanho Nip Tuck desde o início.

South Park, 13ª temporada (Comedy Central)

Sexta, 9 de Outubro

Sanctuary, 1ª temporada (Syfy)
Ugly Betty, 4ª temporada (ABC)

V, 1ª temporada (ABC)

2010 – Estreias e séries confirmadas

Caprica, 1ª temporada – 22 de Janeiro
24, 8ª temporada – Janeiro
American Idol, 9ª temporada – Janeiro
LOST, 6ª temporada – Janeiro
Damages, 3ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Breaking Bad, 3ª temporada – Sem data confirmada

Party Down, 2ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Royal Pains, 2ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Burn Notice, 4ª temporada – Sem data confirmada

Big Love, 4ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Dexter, 5ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Entourage, 7ª temporada – Sem data confirmada

Friday Night Lights, 4ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Friday Night Lights, 5ª temporada – Sem data confirmada

O elenco, correto e irrepreensível, consegue traduzir perfeitamente o terror e o pânico os quais a família fora submetida à época.

With Mad Men coming back to the airwaves tonight – I’m clutching my remote already – my obsessive-compulsive love for television is rearing its head once again. Don Draper and crew aside, here are my most anticipated season (and series) premieres for the upcoming TV season.

Cougar Town

Krista Miller? Yes. Courtney Cox Arquette? Yes! Busy Philipps? I just had an orgasm. Much like I anticipate Cox’s Jules Cobb will orgasm with many younger hunks. Watch out, Demi Moore. Your title is at stake.

Gossip Girl

Ed Westwick makes me swoon. Chace Crawford too. And Penn Badgley. And despite my roaring homosexuality, Blake Lively and Leighton Meester. Even Gossip parentals Matthew Settle and Kelly Rutherford are bangable. If this show were all eye candy, I’d be happy. The fact that its characters have grown into compelling and well-rounded individuals puts me through the moon. I love Gossip Girl so much I’m even willing to deal with Michelle Tratchenberg’s terrible acting (But not Taylor Momsen’s awful hair. Bring back pretty Jenny!).

30 Rock

My muffin top is all that, whole-grain, low fat. I’m probably way too much of a Liz Lemon, but Jenna is the one who holds my heart. Also, Jack Donaghy. I don’t care how fat Alec Baldwin gets or how many times he calls his daughter a “thoughtless little pig,” I’d still have sex with him. Who knows? Maybe she is a pig. Just a thought.

American Idol

Straight up now tell me, do you really wanna love Paula Abdul forever? I don’t. So it should come as no surprise that I’m uber-pumped for a Paula-free season. I can finally watch the judges comments without having to be drunk.

Melrose Place

Confession time. I would say that I hope it shocks you, but I know that it won’t. Back in the day, circa grade 6 or 7, I used to come home from school, get into my pajamas or sweats, make a bowl of popcorn, and settled down for a few reruns of Melrose Place. It aired at 5 p.m. Most kids were probably out riding their bikes. Maybe that’s why I was so fat. Anyway, I’m exciting for the return of Michael, Jo, Jane and my ultimate favorite, Sidney (even though she dies in the first episode. Reportedly.).

90210

What did Annie hit in the finale? And by what, I mean who? Shenae Grimes seems like a dirty little bitch, but she’s awfully pretty (in an anorexic kind of way). My personal favorite character is Adriana and, though the show is pretty dreadfully written, I am a loyal viewer. Rob Estes is a mad DILF, too.

Grey’s Anatomy

I didn’t want Izzie to die. I really didn’t. Bailey maybe. Not Izzie (maybe because I am one of the only people who actually like Katherine Heigl). Therefore, I’m ecstatic to return to Seattle Grace knowing very well that Izzie Stevens remains a resident. I’ll miss T.R. Knight, but it’s not like he’s had anything to do in the last two seasons anyway. Bring on the trauma drama.

Desperate Housewives

Okay, it’s not a consistently good show. The quality dips from god-awful to stellar in mere weeks. But there are a few things that keep me tuning in – Marcia Cross’s dramatic brilliance, Eva Longoria Parker’s amazing comedic timing, and the hotness that is Doug Savant. Oh, and lets not forget the evolution of Teri Hatcher’s face. Plus, Julie’s back this season, and I find it very hard to resist a pretentious child.

The Beautiful Life

I’m not much of a Mischa Barton fan (is anyone, really?), but I’m excited for this show. Why? Because it looks like it has all the things I look for in a guilty pleasure: high fashion, sexy men, slutty ladies, and oodles of cash flow.

Brothers & Sisters

I miss the Walkers tremendously, from Nora and her ill-executed but well-meaning dinner parties to Justin and his newfound ability to complete full sentences (and still look so pretty) to Kevin and Sarah and their bitchy exchanges. I’m hoping they don’t mess up the Rebecca thing but making her all obsessive, but I have faith in the writers and can’t wait to be back at the table with the whole clan. Minus Tommy.

Law and Order: SVU

Two words: Chris Meloni. And that’s all she wrote.

Samantha Who?

Oh wait, ABC cancelled it. Assholes.

I’m also very excited for Private Practice, but revisiting that season finale is just a tad too traumatic. Poor, poor Violet. And I think I’ve given up on The Hills. I can’t deal with Spiedi.

Anything I missed, fellow boobtubers?

Much love.

DROP DEAD DIVA: 1.03 “Do Over”

I watched this episode on Sunday, but I’m still having trouble with my thoughts on it. It’s a cute show. It really is. But there’s something amiss in my book. Like, why is Deb going along with being Jane? Why doesn’t she cart off and just move on with some other life entirely? Why isn’t she spending all her time in the gym to get back to the model size she likes?

There’s no part of her that’s rebelling against her new life. Whether she’s considered good or bad at the gates of death really has little to do with it. It would be a natural tendency to go back to the familiar, so why is she so comfortable falling into Jane’s life? Taking cases without much of a fight? Going into work every day? I’m just not sure I get it.

Is it because her old boyfriend works there? Not really. She spends little time with him, and you’d think that if that were the thing pulling her in, she’d be talking about it more to Stacy or Fred. But it’s not really mentioned.

It makes the show just a little less believable, and while I like Jane, she doesn’t have the adorability factor–or even whacky factor–that Christina Applegate did in Samantha Who?. Sure, she’s a likable character, and I think I could really get to like her a long time from now, but I just think she’d be stronger if she didn’t have the Deb baggage–the same baggage that makes the premise of the show.

But about this episode. The part that intrigued me the most were her dreams. Could Jane really be hostile about Deb’s taking over her body? Well, it’s an interesting situation isn’t it. Jane had a chance at life (at least we’d assume), and Deb stole it from her. If I were Jane, I’d be mad too.

Which really makes me want this show to be a horror story. I mean, think about it. Some supernatural event allows one soul to take over another and then the original ghost comes after her? It was an accident the whole time, I swear! Friends being killed left and right. And poor Grayson. Well, methinks that they’d end up being the happy couple in the end, but it would add a little more drama into the show.

I don’t know. I really want to like this show. I think it has a lot of potential, but it’s almost weighed down by the fact that Jane is a lawyer. I mean, I could see Deb taking over Jane’s life more if she worked somewhere else–a magazine, a shop, something like that. But a lawyer. Now we’re adding cases into her struggle, and it’s just…too much? So much that we can’t develop what needs to be?

It’s still a cute show and I think it has potential. I love watching Jane and Fred together. But there’s still something wrong. Hopefully, that fixes itself soon.

Foto: Imyourstar
