A stiff upper lip, although not British.

 It was our niece’s first birthday party.  She was so cute!   Andy and I got her one of those walker popper things, that we all had as children and a peek-a-boo toy with different switches and knobs to operate it.  It was a wonderful time.

If  blogs were meant for nothing more than bloviating about our superior intelligence, then I submit the following.  I don’t like childrens’ toys that take batteries.  They take all the expoloration and imagination out of play.  The toys I remember from my childhood weren’t powered, didn’t make beeps or blings, didn’t talk or move animatronically.  They were manual fun toys.  Those like Legos and Tinker Toys.  Justify it all you want, but children need toys that breed imagination and creativity, not simple call and response.   I don’t like them period, the toys with batteries.

I’ve always had a problem with these toys. They really seem to not last long.  After a while it becomes obvious that if button A is pressed, then action 1 occurs.  How much can a child learn from this?  It seems quite limited. 

I’m a fan of the old, but classic toys.  I don’t think I’ll ever change.   Dress-up clothes, building blocks, play-tools, and the like last longer, breed more creativity, and encourage learning.  More so than any battery operated electric toy.

(Boston, MA) November 16, 2009 – In a stunning move announced today by Triceptus Studios Co-Executive Producer/CEO Crosby Tatum, Triceptus Studios has made the decision to showcase the premiere of All 4our One’s pilot episode: Episode 101 (pilot) aka  ”BABY BEGINNINGS” on All 4our One’s website – www.all4ourone.com.  All 4our One is Triceptus Studios first High-Definition Sitcom that focuses on the lives of a sweet-natured, but ditzy mixed-race female named CRYSTAL JONES, her materialistic but supportive multi-racial female friends, SAMANTHA PEETE, JOY FELIX, & ELLEN ROGERS, her womanizing boss JAY COEPLAND, and her freeloading half-brother, TERRY.

When asked as to why Triceptus Studios decided to release the pilot for public viewing, Crosby had the following to say: “All 4our One has been one of our most time-tested and successful ventures that has produced a myriad of success for all of us here at Triceptus Studios.  Our goal is to get onto national television and we are close to striking a deal that will help us get to our goal.  But to generate more interest and to give people a sample of what they’ve been hearing about for an entire year, we felt, rather I felt that it would benefit our cause to get the people involved with what this series potentially has to offer to men and women particularly, and let them say if they like it or not.”

Ok, We all know that the historical dolls in the American Girl collection are supposed to be like role model girls from the past. But who ever knew they would actually appear in a real, school history book! Ok, so it’s not like their life story or anything actually printed about the dolls can be found, but their certainly is a sighting! Can you find her?

The Samantha Parkington doll can be found in the bottom picture with her sailing outfit. Here is another photo which allows you to get a better look. I’m sorry, it is a little blurry!

Plenty of parents declare that they heartily dislike modern names.  Then they declare an affection for Samantha.  Stylistically Samantha keeps company with choices like Alexandra and Isabella, but her history is quite brief.

You’ll find Samantha linked to the Old Testament Samuel, from the Hebrew for “God has heard.”  Samuel has been in the boys’ rotation since the Reformation.  But a feminine version didn’t emerge for years.  

The first notable Samantha was Samantha Bumgarner, born on Halloween 1878 in a tiny North Carolina town.  She followed in a family tradition and took up the fiddle, eventually becoming a folk music legend.  

There were a smattering of Samanthas as early as the eighteenth century.  It may be a mash-up of Samuel and Antha, from the Greek anthos, or flower.  In the 1880s, Samantha ranked in the 500s – about as common as Easter, Mahala or Merle.  By the 1900s, she was unranked.  For generations, Sammie charted instead.  (Billie and Bobbie also fared well into the 1940s.) 

 By the 1950s, even Sammie had disappeared from the US Top 1000.

Then came 1964’s Bewitched.  The series ran until 1972, and can still be seen in re-runs all over the planet.  If you’ve never turned on a television, here’s the Cliff Notes: witches walk among us, but are careful to keep that on the down low.  Until one – Samantha – falls for a bumbling mortal and agrees to go cold turkey on the spellcasting – except for once or thrice an episode.

The writers must’ve been going for unusual when they picked Samantha.  At the time, she wasn’t ranked in the US Top 1000.  Fellow witches were named Endora, Serena, Enchantra, Hagatha and Esmerelda.  They’d later christen her daughter Tabitha/Tabatha. (Both spellings appear in the production notes.)

The year Bewitched hit the small screen, Samantha re-entered the rankings at #473, and jumped to #179 a year later.

At the same time, the UK’s Top of the Pops featured Samantha Juste, the “disc girl” who put the needle down on the record.  (Remember those?)  Juste was born Sandra, so Samantha must’ve sounded like a romantic, unusual choice in the 60s.

In 1976, Samantha entered the Top 100 at #85.  By 1986 she was #21.  She peaked at #3 in 1998.

It wasn’t all witchcraft.  Samantha was all over television – from Tony Danza’s tomboy daughter on Who’s the Boss to Kim Catrall’s ambitious cougar on Sex in the City.  There were soap opera Samanthas.  An American Girl doll who wore the name.  Schoolgirl Samantha Smith made headlines in 1982 when she wrote a letter to Soviet ruler Yuri Andropov and later visited the country as a Goodwill Ambassador.

After decades of heavy use, Samantha has faded slightly, slipping to #11 in 2008.  She still ranks in the Top 100 in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Scotland and Germany.  

In recent years, celebs have flocked to simple Sam for their daughters.  (Think Tiger Woods and Denise Richards.)  Exotic variants Samiah, Samira and Samara are also options for parents seeking a fresh take on Samantha.

While there’s nothing unexpected about Samantha, she still wears well today – even if she can’t quite claim to be a classic.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when a band I expect a lot from has a dud. Sometimes it’s an entire album, and other times it’s just one or two songs – either way, it really grates on my nerves. I find that when my favourite band releases a song I don’t like, it quickly becomes the most horrid song I have ever heard – Miley Cyrus’ included – and I can’t stop focusing on and talking about how much I hate it. I understand that it’s unrealistic of me to expect every song from bands I like to be good, but regardless, I expect it anyway.

2009's Sainthood by Tegan and Sara

The most recent example of this stems from Tegan and Sara’s new album, Sainthood. Great album, and I enjoy it from start to finish. Well, start to finish minus one song. One horrendous, repetitive, Zelda-wannabe, irritating song. Alligator. With a name like that, you’re probably thinking that it’s a killer song, but really, it’s monstrous. In all of the wrong ways. There is nothing edgy or predatory about it. Instead, it’s fluffy and the lyrics are lacking the usual Sara spin. By the second time that Sara sings, “over you, over you” I am ready to scream, “PLEASE, LET HER BE SPEAKING ABOUT THE SONG!” There is a synth in the song, which you can hear clearly at 1:04, which sounds like Sara was playing too many video games and decided to become Link from Zelda. It’s annoying. I am one for all of Sara’s quirks, but not when it comes to this song – it’s the same song over, and over, and over, and over again. It is like an 80’s dance continuation of Walking With A Ghost, which is another song that grates on my nerves. I spill alligator tears every time this song hits my eardrums.

The most irritating thing about the song is that I know it’s going to be a song that’s raved about, and everyone is going to think that it’s Tegan and Sara’s best work. It’s not. It is nowhere near as inspired as other Sara-penned songs such as, Like O, Like H and Night Watch or Tegan’s Where Does The Good Go and The Cure.

Audience members rose to their feet and exploded with applause when UCF junior Michael Newman accepted the title of Mr. UCF 2010, beating out nine other contestants in the annual scholarship pageant.

Students watched as 10 students dressed as zombies took the stage in the Pegasus Ballroom in the Student Union  on Friday as they danced to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

Newman, who won the judges’  favor and the audience popular vote, took home over $2,000 in scholarship awards courtesy of Student Government Association and the UCF Alumni Association. He said his main objective as Mr. UCF this year would be to spread awareness.

“I carry the world on my backpack,” Newman said as he performed a poem he found online called The Renditions of a Homeless Man for the talent competition. Newman dressed in layers of jackets and carried a sign that read: “Hungry any spare change helps please.”

“Students a lot of times feel disconnected from the community around us. Two miles down the road there are people that are homeless,” Newman said. “There are a lot of people that stay within the circle at UCF because they don’t really understand or realize what’s going on around us.”

Newman said during his interview that he wants to bridge that gap between the community, students and faculty, which he believes is part of the UCF Creed.

Newman is currently an ambassador on the President’s Leadership Council, the community service chair of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity and a member of the Student Sustainability Alliance. 

The pageant winner was not the only student heavily involved in campus and community activities vying for a shot at the Mr. UCF title. Spectacular Knight and Campus Activities Board Director Samantha Nemeroff said 15 students auditioned for the event, but only ten competed in the pageant.

“They represented UCF in a great way,” Nemeroff said. “They are all very involved in the school and the community. Their talents were impressive, too.”

Jonathan Parker sang the bluesy Porgy & Bess classic “Summertime.” Matthew Miller, clad in a glitter jacket and rhinestone glove, moonwalked to a version of “Billy Jean” by Michael Jackson. Marcus Williams dressed in a red and white checkerboard shirt, and performed a hip-hop line dancing routine to a music mix. James Jarman broke out the red vinyl records and turntables, scratched and spun a house and Latin mix. 

Tyson Nales, Mr. UCF 2009, and Dasha Gonzalez, Miss UCF 2010,  hosted the pageant with a panel of five judges. The bulk of the contestants’ scores came from the talent competition followed by their audition interview, formal wear, beachwear and a final on-stage question.

The scholarship pageant began in 1989 and benefits both students and the community. Sidney Porter, Sunshine Princess and Lake Highland student, donated a midback ponytail of hair to Locks of Love and the audience favorite vote raised $920 for Children’s Miracle Network.

SGA provided scholarship awards of $400 to the third runner-up, Warren Jackson, $650 to second runner-up, James Jarman, and $1,000 to first runner-up, Marcus Williams.

Additionally, Jonathan Parker won $500 in awards for nonfinalist best interview and top ad sales. David Cohn won $350 for nonfinalist best talent and David Yu won Mr. Congeniality and $150.

The pageant is open to all full-time male undergraduate and graduate students who hold a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Nemeroff said she can relax for a week before she begins planning for the Miss UCF pageant, with 25 girls set to compete for the title on Feb. 6, 2010.
