Years ago good music games were hard to come by. Unless you imported games like Pop’n Music from Japan or you happened to play a game like Frequency, Samba De Amigo, or Parappa the Rapper you really didn’t have much. I mean sure you did have DDR but even that was best played at an arcade for $1 a round. Fast forward to 2009 and it seems like a music game is coming out once a month. From Rock Band to Guitar Hero to god knows what it’s become a little much. When I first heard about DJ Hero I was a little hesitant. I loved the idea but I grew way too tired of all of these plastic instruments to even consider getting another one. Then, just a few weeks ago, the track list was announced and HOLY SHIT. I saw it and pretty much exploded. From there my curiosity grew and fast forward to now and I have the game. Before I even get into the more in depth review I want to say this:

This is easily one of the greatest music games ever made.

It’s tough to say which is my favorite song thus far…. but I can assure you that almost EVERY song I played is crazy fun. I’d also like to mention that even if you don’t recognize some of the songs I promise you will when they start to play.

2) The Challenging Gameplay

The Last Plastic Instrument you will need.... hopefully...

The main reason you will buy any video game is of course for the gameplay. This is truly where DJ Hero shines. The controller, which is pictured above, has 3 main buttons on the turntable which in fact does spin all the way around, a crossfader, a knob for effects, and a black button that lights up for “Euphoria” aka star power. Rather than confuse you just watch this video and you should have a basic idea of how it works:

The main reason I put challenging gameplay rather than just gameplay is because this game is NOT easy. I do however mean that in the best way possible. The game is easy to learn but HARD to master. Anyone, and I really mean anyone, can jump in and play this game on the easy setting. Medium offers quite the challenge because it throws in the impossibly fun crossfader. As with any music game the better you get at it the more fun it becomes. The better you are at multitasking the better you’ll be at the Hard and Expert modes. I can still assure you though that I played Medium for 5 hours straight last night without getting bored.

What’s crazy though is how much stuff is going on at once at the harder difficulties. There will be times where you’ll have to hold down the green button and continue to scratch the record while then pressing the red button setting the crossfader left and then turning the effects dial for extra points… Oh, and you’ll of course hit the Euphoria button before hand for extra points. Sounds confusing and tough but I can assure you that it comes naturally and when you start pulling off those more challenging things you will not be able to stop smiling OR playing. My only concern is that the game does take a toll on a your wrist. It may have been cause I was playing for 5 hours straight but it’s tough to say. I would just suggest playing on a level table.

3) The Party Game Factor

I remember when Guitar Hero first came out people were showing it off at every party. DJ Hero is now going to be that game. The good news however is that you won’t have to listen to “Through the Fire and Flames” 30 times over and over again. This time you get the some of the sickest mash ups since Girls Talk’s “Feed The Animals” album. Don’t believe me?

I should also mention that there are certain songs available that you can play multiplayer with a guitar. Can you see the potential for future titles?

Final Thoughts:

This game is a must buy. $120. Go get it. You will not be disappointed. Why are you still reading this? GO BUY THIS GAME!

Jo, estas cosas hacen ilu (modo cursi OFF). Es la primera vez que me toca algo en un concurso!! Cuando vi mi nombre entre los ganadores al concurso que organizaron en Eurogamer sobre el Samba de Amigo no me lo creía :’D

Normally this is where I start talking about the social implication of some new piece of technology or internet craze, but not today!

Samba de Amigo is bright and colorfull even in the box!

So what game am I reviewing?  Well if you happened to read the title you know that I’m reviewing Samba de Amigo and if you didn’t read the title, you should know now.  If you failed to read all of this, get out.  Seriously.

Ok now that we’re rid of any hangers on I’d like to start by saying that Samba de Amigo is not a good game.  It’s a great game!  XD  Now on to the rest!

Basics:

System: Nintendo Wii

Graphics:

Standard Wii graphics here.  Failry last gen, but polished and cool looking.  Character and enviornmental design suit the game perfectly with lots of bright colors and cute (sometimes gender ambigious) characters.  Backgrounds range from stages, to street parades to “floating in space” psychedelic moments.  It’s a great mix that doesn’t take away from the one screen instructions.

Sound effects:

Annoying!  Turn down your Wiimote volume on this one or you won’t be able to hear the music from the TV over the stupid noises coming out of the controls!

Music:

Gender is totally subjective with the Rio character (until you read the manual, then he's male).

Nice arrangement of music, lots of choice.  Some tracks are covers, but some are licenced.  There are a lot of remixes in this game, but they’re generally not bad and all serve the purpose of taking the original song and giving it a Samaba flair.

Gameplay:

There are a handful of different modes to choose from but all of them use the same “flail to the beat” interface that makes you love and hate the game at the same time.  The “Dance” commands give you a heck of a work out as you wave your arms around in longer fluid motions rather than the short maraca shaking moves, and the “Pose” commands give you a break… where you can stand and look silly.

But it’s soooo much fun!

Multiplayer co-op and vs modes make it fun to play with friends.  There are two single player modes that offer a lot of pick up and play action that gets you shaking it to the beat far more than you’d care to admit to your friends.

Controls:

Yes, there are 3 ways to play this game!

1) Nunchuck and Wiimote:  This is pretty standard and aside from occasionally batting yourself with the cable between the two controllers it works very well.  If you really love this game it could be worth getting a wireless nunchuck, or you can opt for option 2.

2) Wiimote X2:  You can use two wiimotes to shake your booty without any cords in the way.  This game maxes out at two players because of this (the system can only support up to 4 wiimotes) but it really is the best way to play.

3) Maraca add ons:  Jam you nunchuck and your Wiimote in to the giant red plastic maracas and break your arms with the added weight!  These things are huge and heavy!  But they make the game a great work out and you feel like a real musician…. kinda.  I’m not sold on these things yet, but they’re cute.  I like that you can remove the beads in them if you don’t like the shaker noise, though to be honest, it’s not that loud.

Creepy Monkey...

Complaints:

I want character selection!  I do not want to play as the small creepy monkey, I want to play as the butterfly girl!

Great job including Mii’s from the player’s Wii in the game backgrounds.  Super cute!

Overall:

Buy it if you love rhythm games and don’t mind looking a little silly with friends.  It really is fun, despite what you think.  Put this in the closet next to you DDR mat and indulge in your secret shame!  (Or in my case, not so secret!)

Samba De Amigo, a music-rhythm video game released on Dreamcast several years ago, is returning to stardom in an exclusive Wii special. Is the $40 worth the price of admission? Or should one just rent? Read on to find out.

Shake your maracas.. err, Wii Remotes/Nunchunk to the beat! Technically speaking you can purchase maracas for the Wii as well, but I found them a bit too heavy to hold, and they were only for a wiimote/nunchuck combo instead of two wiimotes.

They only cost me $5, thanks to the special deal Best Buy had, but for the most part I don’t use them. I use two wiimotes for maracas, and in my opinion, it works the best out of all the options.

The game is basically shaking your wiimotes to six different icons on the screen. Think of them as drums, if you like – and you have to hit them. When they reach the selected icon.

I highly recommend calibrating your Wiimotes through the game options every time you play, as this allows for slightly better controls in the game. It takes some time to get used to the gameplay, but once you get the hang of it, it’s really fun.

Frustration does kick in once you get to Hard mode in Career mode, but try and find better “shaking rhythms” and try and get into the groove. While I did not score many A’s, I managed to complete most of the songs without repeating them more than once.

One thing that is extremely annoying is the grading system. Why is it when I get 95% it’s a C? Last time I checked, that is an A. Because of this unfair and complex grading system, it takes a lot of fun out of the game, especially since the controls are not exactly accurate.

Nevertheless, the songs are so much fun dancing too! I really liked many of the songs – it was especially nice to hear “Mexican Flyer”, a Space Channel 5 song. There is a variety of mini-games and other modes to play, with over 40 songs (and more- if including downloadable content, which is being released at 500 points per pack)

For $40, you get a great music game that is sure to be in your Wii for awhile. Stick with it and you will become better, just like I did.

Presentation: I loved the interface! Easy to navigate and very colorful. The only problem I had was that one of the characters was a bit promiscuous, as her outfit was way too “bouncy” and revealing. [9.0]

Gameplay: The game is very difficult in the beginning, but stick with it and you should become better. It is a really addicting, especially since most of the music is so fun to dance to. Having a variety of maraca sounds, with tons of unlockables is great too. However – Iffy controls and unfair grading system makes this game very challenging and frustrating at times. [8.0]

Graphics/Sound: The graphics are nothing too exciting, but they work well for this type of game. I like the art style. The sound is fantastic, as the music selection and different sound effects really make this game come alive. Some more songs would have been nice, like Quimbara for instance. [9.0]

Value Factor/Bottom Line: For $40, you get over 40 songs, tons of modes and unlockables, and lots of fun. I definitely think one should purchase this game. With more downloadable content, this game has an extended replay value. [8.5]

Samba de Amigo es una franquicia que empezo con el “boom” de los juegos musicales, y mediante el uso de una maracas te conviertes en el alma de la fiesta. Tuvo un exito discreto ya que a pesar de lo facil de su uso, no muchas personas estan acostumbradas a explayarse al jugar . . . es asi como SEGA ve que este juego puede resurgir gracias a los jugadores casuales que el Nintendo Wii ha creado en estos años, jugadores que buscan pasar un rato divirtiendose y nada mas.

El juego no es dificil, y por el contrario te entretiene bastante, pero no hay mucho replay value ya que al dominar las canciones el juego es facilmente olvidable . . . mas aun si consideras que muy pocas canciones pueden adaptarse a este genero . . . y considero que ese es su talón de aquiles. En fin como siempre este paquete esta planeado para salir en un bundle con las maracas o si no usa tus controles del wii.

Ah!!! por cierto, SEGA saco un trailer del juego con un par de bailarinas, pero creo que no tuvieron presupuesto porque no estan muy simpaticas que digamos.

Não sei porque, mas desde que o Wii foi lançado não me simpatizo com estes trailers de “família” dos games. Agora até um macaco faz parte da família. XD

Deja que tu lápiz táctil hable por ti en Nintendo DS con el juego PictoImage. Los artistas en ciernes y aquellos que quieran hacer sus pinitos con el dibujo podrán adquirir este título a partir del día 12. Los jugadores tendrán que dibujar una imagen que represente una palabra mientras los contrincantes luchan contra reloj para adivinar la palabra antes. Con ocho modos de juego distintos y modo multijugador de hasta ocho participantes, tanto los artistas del garabato como los aspirantes a Picasso adorarán este juego en la misma medida.

Samba de Amigo
Un juego de arcade clásico debuta el día 19 en Nintendo Wii. Samba de Amigo es un espectáculo de maracas en el que te subes al escenario para intentar seguir el ritmo. Utilizando el mando de Wii™ y el Nunchuk™ como maracas, puedes practicar con la máquina o competir con tus amigos y descubrir quién se mueve mejor. ¡Prepárate para disfrutar de una banda sonora llena de samba que incluye 40 animadas canciones conocidas.

Yakuza 2
Yakuza 2, que aterrizará en las tiendas pisando fuerte el día 19 de septiembre para la consola Playstation 2, es la esperada segunda parte del juego Yakuza del 2005. En esta secuela cinemática y realista te pondrás en la piel de Kazuma Kiryu y conocerás un apasionante pero desafiante mundo. Explora una variedad de entornos, desde restaurantes hasta boleras a medida que te sumerges de nuevo en la oscuridad de los bajos fondos del crimen en Japón. Sonic Chronicles: La Hermandad Siniestra
¡El regreso del espinoso superhéroe de SEGA! The end of this week should be an exciting one. Spore comes out on September 7th, and I plan on putting up my impressions as soon as possible. On the very same day comes the start of the Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning Open Beta. “Open” is a relative term as only people who have preordered the game will be admitted.

Have no fear however as I keep all of you up to date on the goings of the Open Beta and the game in general. This year looks like it could be better than last. Which is surprising to say as I thought last year was pretty satisfying.
