Peace and greetings, everyone. Wallahi (By God), I just logged in at 1:38 PM Central Time, and the very first thing I see when I log into Twitter is a dear sister-in-faith’s note to renowned international singer Sami Yusuf that Awakening Records, his former record label, put a copyright claim on the “You Came to Me” video and forced YouTube to pull the video. I think this is absolutely ridiculuous and utter garbage!!! First of all, ETM International has copyright over the video, NOT Awakening!!!

 If Awakening thinks that just because they claim that Sami is still under contract with them, then that is something that I thought Sami had already resolved, but apparently not. I really thought that Awakening would have grown up and matured, but THEY HAVEN’T!!! Just for that,

I WILL NO LONGER BUY ANYTHING THAT HAS AWAKENING’S LABEL ON IT, AND ANYTHING THAT HAS AWAKENING’S LABEL ON IT OTHER THAN SAMI’S MUSIC ALBUMS AND DVD THAT I HAVE PREVIOUSLY BOUGHT, I WILL PROCEED TO THROW THEM ALL INTO THE TRASH, AND ANY VIDEO THAT I HAVE THAT HAS ANY OF AWAKENING’S ARTISTS ON IT, I WILL DELETE THEM ALL FROM MY UPLOADED VIDEOS!!!

Awakening has lost ALL of my respect, and, God willing, I will never buy anything that they offer EVER AGAIN!!!

I urge everyone to do the same: BOYCOTT AWAKENING!!! DON’T SUPPORT THEIR ARTISTS, MUSIC, OR ANYTHING ELSE THEY OFFER! Anything that has Awakening’s label on it, AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE!

Here’s a video that I made about a month and a half ago, long before this latest incident happened, but I think it’s pretty indicative of how many, if not all, of Sami Yusuf’s fans feel. (Note: After the video below was published, Wikipedia corrected their Sami Yusuf page to represent both sides of the dispute better. Thank you, Wikipedia, for doing that, at least.)

Brother Sami, please be sure that we are all 100% behind you and we will not let Awakening do this to you without having us answer with a boycott of everything they have. God bless you and strengthen you during this difficult time. Ameen (Amen). Peace and God bless.

Hi, everyone. In my 37 years of life on this planet, I would say that this was the very best weekend I ever had, and I am privileged to say that it all happened in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It was a weekend that I will, God willing, never forget.

First, on Friday I wanted to go to the Oklahoma City An-Nasr Mosque, even though I still live in Ardmore at the present time, for our weekly services, because I always enjoy listening to the sermons there. The imam Imad Enchassi was out-of-town on urgent business, so a gentleman named Azhar, who is the South-Central rep for Islamic Relief USA, gave the sermon, and he talked about the importance of giving for a worthy cause, namely the poor and the orphaned children around the world, but also that it is a sign of faith to help those here in the United States as well as abroad. After the sermon and the subsequent prayer was over, I got a chance to visit with old friends who I had not seen in a while as well as to make new friends. Afterwards, I was thinking about going to Moore, just south of OKC, to watch my good friend Saad’s oldest son Keanu play for Southmoore High School against Mustang High School with the local district championship and top seeding for the state championship tournament on the line. However, as I continue to hang out in OKC, getting some lunch and listening to Islamic music while getting in my 30-minutes a day walk, I became aware that renowned Tanzanian-born speaker Hassanain Rajabali, who had given a talk about “Good and Evil: Islamic Perspective” at Meachem Auditorium at Oklahoma University and had almost packed the place completely with about 250 people showing up for the lecture, was giving a talk about the virtues of social work in Islam to the people of the An-Nasr Mosque,  and I decided to sit at least the first part of the lecture before going to Moore for the game. Mr. Rajabali was so captivating a speaker that I couldn’t bring myself to leave, and I ended up staying the entire lecture and ate dinner with the community afterwards. When the evening was over, I headed back to Ardmore, and then back up to Pauls Valley to spend the night and the next morning visiting my mom and stepdad, and they were gracious hosts as always.

At 1:00 PM Saturday afternoon, I left Pauls Valley to head to Edmond, and I was fired-up and excited even before I left. The reason was that I was going to get to meet Native Deen, the immensely popular Islamic hip-hop/rap group along with their drummer Todd Tariq Snare Lowther, who also does the drums for the internationally renowned King of Islamic Pop, Sami Yusuf. I have corresponded quite frequently with brother Tariq so I was really hyped up about meeting him. As I neared Edmond, I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t going to get lost, so I called up my very good friend and one of the main organizers of the “Evening of Inspiration” event that was happening that night, Adam Soltani, and asked him for directions to the Nigh University Center, on the University of Central Oklahoma campus, which he happily gave. As soon as I rolled in, I met Adam and a gentleman named Dawood, who is the National Event Coordinator for Islamic Relief USA. They invited me out to a local restaurant, and I got a chance with eat and visit with them, which I greatly appreciate and want to thank them for. Next, we stopped by a local supplies shop to get some string to help with the setup of the stage for the performances of Native Deen and comedian Mohammed Amer from “Allah Made Me Funny” later that night. Then we drove back to the Nigh University Center to start getting everything ready for the performers. Shortly afterwards, while we were setting everything up, who should pull in but Native Deen and Tariq? God is Great!!!! As soon as Tariq saw me, I was like “Samir, right?” and I was like “Yep.” ) I also got a chance to shake the hands of all three members of Native Deen: Abdul-Malik Ahmad, Naeem Muhammad, and Joshua Saleem, along with Tariq and Native Deen’s road manager, brother Isma’il. Let me tell you: I was Cloud 9, and thanking God for blessing me with this opportunity. Anyway, Adam and I headed to the main reception hall and started getting the youth volunteers together. I want to say to all the volunteers that came and gave their very best effort to make this event a smashing success: GOD BLESS YOU ALL, AND MAY GOD GRANT ALL OF YOU THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF PARADISE, AL-FIRDAWS, IN THE HEREAFTER! Ameen (Amen)! I was admittedly a little nervous, because I had never really been involved in an event like this before in this capacity. I was in charge of making sure everything went smoothly and directing traffic so that people knew where to go for tickets, registration, and to answer any questions that might have. Thankfully, the other volunteers joined together with me and I must say that I think we did pretty good, and Praise be to God for that and for the fact that Adam led the way for us. It also helped that Mr. Khalid and Ms. Shema from the Dallas offices of Islamic Relief USA came and helped us, too. Being considered a traveler, I combined the Maghrib (Sunset) and Isha (Dusk) prayers together, and then I got back to continue my duties as overseer, when Adam came to me and said: “Samir, brother Adnan from Morocco is running late. Do you know how to recite the Qur’an’s Surat-ud-Duha (Chapter of the Morning Light)?” I said “Yes, of course I can, Praise be to God.” He said “Would you like to be on stage reciting it to begin the event?” I was like “Yeah, I sure would. That would be awesome! Thank you.” Let me tell you: My knees were knocking against each other because I was so nervous, but when Naeem Muhammad from Native Deen began the event by introducing me to recite Surat-ud-Duha, by the Grace of God Almighty, I settled down enough to recite it in what I thought was a pretty good way of doing it. It also helped that  my dear friend Imam Imad Enchassi was there to make sure that my pronunciation was adequate beforehand. He said it was, so it made me feel better before I got up on stage. The attendance was about 250 people, and I had never recited the Qur’anic verses in front of that many people before, but I was definitely an experience for me to remember and cherish always. Once I finished, I met Imad, as well as Razi Hashmi, the executive director of CAIR’s Oklahoma Chapter, and Adam Soltani, and all of them were complimentary of my recitation, and Razi said that he really didn’t notice that I was nervous, which made me feel pretty good. Anyway, then it was Adam’s turn to get up on stage to say a few words of thanks to Islamic Relief and to Native Deen, as well as to encourage everyone to contribute to helping the poor and the needy and to sponsor an orphan if they could. Then Razi got onstage, and he included the fact that CAIR is also doing its best to protect Muslims’ civil rights in this country, and that we should help others around the world with their basic necessities as well, and that Islamic Relief is one of the foremost organizations in the world in doing that. Finally, Imad got up on stage, and in his usual way, said to the audience “Let’s show everyone what the enthusiasm of the Oklahoma Muslim community is all about. Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh (Peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you and yours,)” to which the audience responded with a thundering response “Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.” Then he proceeded to emphasize the same things that Adam and Razi had, but in his own personal way. Once he finished, then it was time for the fundraising, and Mr. Azhar, who had given the sermon the previous day, encouraged and urged everyone to give as much as they could, and that was also accompanied by Naeem Muhammad showing a video detailing the plight of orphans throughout the world, regardless of faith. It received a large response, and I was very happy with that, along with the organizers.

Once the fundraising was done, it was time for Mohammed Amer to come on stage and do his comedian thing. Wow! All I got to say that he was a riot. He had everybody laughing and rolling in the aisles. After that, Mr. Azhar stepped back on the stage and continued the fundraising and got a large response, Thank God.

Then it was time for the biggest act of the night. That’s right; it was time for Native Deen and brother Tariq. Let me say that they absolutely rocked the house. I have never enjoyed an event like this one before. Everyone was standing up, clapping and cheering and singing along with Native Deen in their songs. They were even nice enough to give three of the kids in the crowd free albums of theirs. They started off with “Be At The Top,” and let me tell you that the crowd was immediately receptive and singing along with Native Deen. They even introduced a new song “Ramadan is Here,” along with singing songs from their two albums “Deen You Know” and “Not Afraid to Stand Alone” which I already have. Hopefully, a third album comes out soon. Anyway, the two best moments of the entire night was when Tariq did his drum instrumental, and wow, you want to talk about a guy who’s got talent??!! Praise God! The other moment was the final song of the night, the M.U.S.L.I.M. song, and I never got into a song like I did this one. I was rocking, singing, pounding my chest, waving my hands, and the whole nine yards. Needless to say, it was an awesome night, and one that I will never forget as long as I live, God willing. I even got a chance to take a picture with Native Deen at the end,

 and then we all went to IHOP to enjoy some fellowship and eat some great food.

Peace and greetings, everyone. As a 37-year-old single guy who has never been married before, has never had kids, and who has already seen his two younger brothers (there are no other siblings) get married and have kids, it can get very depressing sometimes when I reflect on my situation. However, my sadness quickly abates when I realize that the only one who can change my situation is me, because Allah (God) Almighty says in the Qur’an:

“Certainly, God will not change the condition of a people until they change themselves.”

Therefore, I am constantly trying to improve myself so I can receive the help that God can give through His Will and Grace.

Anyway, the purpose of this post is to let all of you know that I am trying to find that special someone in my life to be my soulmate and wife. For those of you who don’t know about me, just go to http://us.singlemuslim.com/nisserlubamriki.

After clicking and reading the above link, I just want to add that I believe that it takes a full year to get to know someone before a person can make a good decision as to whether they want to marry the other person. Also, I am a big Sami Yusuf fan, as well as a huge fan of Islamically-inspired Muslim singers in general, and I do listen to non-Muslim songs as long as their lyrics conform to Islamic rules. My future wife doesn’t have to like any of those things, but she has to be willing to accept the fact that I like those things. Of course, for her to like those things, too, would be a huge plus. “Imam Abu Hanifa (God have mercy on his soul) was asked by the khalifa (caliph) to meet with them and an atheist so Imam Abu Hanifa could debate with him. They set a time for them to meet up. So the day and time came and left and they kept waiting for Imam Abu Hanifa until finally he came. Everyone questioned him about his being late and what happened. So he started explaining how there was river that he had to cross….and he was waiting for a boat to come and bring him on the other side of the river.

Learning about Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) in Oklahoma City

Hi, everyone. Yesterday, as I finished waking up from a long sleep, which was the best sleep I’ve had in a while, I thought to myself: “I haven’t been to Oklahoma City in a couple of weeks.” I live in Ardmore, a 1 hour and 40 minute trip away from the An-Nasr Mosque in Oklahoma City, and because of the distance and the consumption of gas that results from such a long trip, I don’t like taking the trip too often, and normally go about once a month. Plus, there was a period of several months where, because of car problems, I couldn’t make the trip at all. However, I love the Muslim community up there in OKC and I missed them, because the fellowship is so strong there and because they’re so numerous, I know that I can find people to pray all 5 prayers in the day there, plus have some fellowship afterwards with the brothers-in-faith that I’m close to without them rushing off to work or something. I decided to get on the Internet like I always do and especially check Facebook, because that’s where the brothers-in-faith in OKC like to communicate with each other. I come to find out from the imam, or head preacher, of the An-Nasr Mosque, Imad Enchassi, that he is having his usual Sunday class teaching about the stories of the Prophets (peace be upon them all) that are found in the Qur’an as well as in Bible. He was talking about the Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) in this particular class, and I thought that was good, but what really intrigued me was the fact that the famous rock group U2 was also having a concert that night in OKC. Imad posted this message in his Facebook Wall: “Your choice: come to the class or go to U2 concert.” I was like: I live in Ardmore, and I normally don’t go to either one; if I go to OKC, I’ll go to the class, because of the knowledge that I will learn and internalize, which, God willing, will benefit me more than going to a U2 concert. I’m not criticizing U2, but I am stating that we have to keep our priorities in line with what’s really important. Besides, the environment at those kinds of concerts is not exactly the kind that encourages me to practice my faith, nor does it uplift me spiritually. I was debating whether to go to OKC or not, and when Imad said that, I was like: “What the heck? Why not? Let’s go to OKC.” I posted a response to Imad, saying: “Imad, you might get a surprise visit, God willing. Stay tuned.” Thank God that the weather was beautiful outside, so it made the decision that much easier. :) Anyway, I jumped in the car and took off to OKC. It helped that I had a couple of music CD’s that I could listen to while I was driving, so I decided to pop the first one in. It was a CD that I had compiled of my favorite Islamically-inspired Muslim singer, Sami Yusuf. I don’t mind going to the concerts of Islamically-inspired Muslim singers, because it is their music that uplifts me spiritually and strengthens my faith in God Almighty and His Final Prophet and Messenger, Muhammad son of Abdullah (may God Almighty’s peace and blessings be upon him always). Anyway, once I got finished with Sami’s beautiful songs, I then grabbed the other CD, which contained songs by Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), Kareem Salama (the first-ever Muslim country music singer), folk singer Dawud Wharnsby, traditional nasheed singers Zain Bhikha and Mustaqiim Sahir, hip-hop/rap groups Native Deen and Outlandish, and a couple of songs by Cat Stevens during his non-Muslim days, “Peace Train” and “Morning Has Broken.” I listen to songs by non-Muslims as long as the lyrics conform to Islamic beliefs. Anyway, as I was pulling into the An-Nasr Mosque’s parking lot, Kareem Salama’s song “Chivalry’s Not Dead” was finishing. After it finished, I turned off the car and got out and headed into the mosque. Lo and behold! The first one I met when I entered the mosque was none other than Imad himself. Wow! Talk about great minds thinking alike! :) Anyway, Imad said as soon as he saw me: “I was thinking to myself: ‘I think Samir’s coming to OKC today.’” I was like: “You think?” LOL. :) Anyway, I prayed the Maghrib (Sunset) and ‘Isha (dusk) prayers combined when I entered the prayer hall, and I could combine the prayers since I was considered a traveler because I was far away from home, and then sat down as the class was starting. I was very humbled to see the faces of joy that the other brothers had when they saw me. I am very grateful to have such wonderful people to call as my brothers-in-faith. Anyway, as soon as I sat down, Imad said: “We are pleased to have Mr. Samir Rafael Elneser joining us from Ardmore for the class today.” I was like “Thanks, Imad,” smiling sheepishly. :) Anyway, the class got started, and Imad proceeded to talk about the Prophet Joseph (pbuh) and his ordeal while he was in prison to protect him from the Egyptian prime minister’s wife, who, along with the ladies at her side, wanted to commit adultery with him, and Joseph felt that the best way to protect himself from this temptation was to ask to go to prison. Just a side note here: Imad talked about the fact that the pharaohs didn’t rule Egypt during this time. He didn’t mention who did rule, but according to my understanding of history, and I could be wrong, but a Semitic people from the Arabian peninsula called the Hyksos ruled Egypt for about 200- 250 years, so it was probably them that Joseph (pbuh) dealt with. Anyway, while in prison, he taught the prison inmates about the Oneness of God Almighty, and therefore being so loved by the inmates that it was said that if an inmate got out of prison, he would deliberately go back to prison just so he could be with Joseph (pbuh) again and have fellowship with him. :) Anyway, there were two special prison inmates that would have their fate judged, one condemned to death and the other allowed to live and be free. Joseph (pbuh) came to know who the surviving one would be, which was the king’s butler, and proceeded to tell that butler something to the effect of: “When you go in front of the king next time, if you have time, put in a good word for me.” However, the butler forgot for a few years, once he was released from prison, to mention to the king about Joseph (pbuh). After a few years, one night the king had a dream. In that dream, he saw 7 fat cows and 7 skinny cows. He saw the 7 skinny cows eating the 7 fat cows. He also saw 7 green bales of hay, and 7 dry bales of wheat. Perplexed by this dream, he called his advisers to him and asked them what this dream meant. The advisers thought that the dream was a mixed-up mumbo-jumbo dream that made no sense. However, they qualified their belief by saying that they were not experts in interpreting dreams. This is when the butler stepped in, remembering his promise that he gave Joseph (pbuh) to put in a good word for him in front of the king, and he told the king that this man named Joseph (pbuh) who was in prison, knew how to interpret dreams and could be of help to the king. Some ministers said yes and some said no, but the king said “Tell this Joseph (pbuh) about my dream.” The butler forthwith went to Joseph (pbuh) in the prison and, embarrassed by the fact that he had forgotten till now to put in a good word before the king like Joseph asked, said to Joseph (pbuh): “O truthful one! The king has this dream, and he would like to know what it means.” Joseph (pbuh) obliged in interpreting the dream. He said: “The 7 fat cows signify 7 years of prosperity and abundant harvests of crops, and the skinny cows signify 7 years of drought that will follow the 7 years of prosperity. He advised the butler to advise the king to eat only of what is needed from the prosperous years and to save the rest, not even removing the bushels from the wheat. The skinny cows eating the fat cows meant that the Egyptian people will be eating during the years of drought what they saved up during the years of prosperity, which also is exactly what the green and dry bales of wheat meant. Joseph (pbuh) then told of an additional prophecy, saying: “When the 7 years of drought are over, the people will squeeze whatever they have left to survive.” The butler took Joseph’s (pbuh) words to the king, who, being pleased with what he heard, said “Bring Joseph (pbuh) to me.” With that, the class ended, to be continued next week, and I made the call for the ‘Isha prayer, and then we sat down and ate some briyani, which is good, as long as it’s not too hot.  Then I prayed ‘Isha with the community, even though I already prayed it before, because the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) taught us that when the time for the community to pray has come, even if you prayed before, everyone still has to pray. To me, that means basically to keep the community united and to make sure that people are not skipping the prayer on purpose while in the mosque. Anyway, once the prayer was over and after Imad related a quick saying from the Prophet (pbuh) pertaining to the Banu Nadir, one of the original Jewish tribes of Medina who were originally politically allied with the Prophet (pbuh), but relations had deteriorated so extensively between them that they eventually plotted to kill the Prophet (pbuh) and were expelled from Medina as a result, that was the end of my trip to OKC, and I left the mosque and headed home, listening to the music that I had listened to on the way to OKC. It was a wonderful experience, and to Imad and the other brothers-in-faith who were so kind, I say “God bless you and keep in His Protection always. Ameen (Amen).” Peace and take care.
