NEW YORK (Press Release)–The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) has expressed its opposition to the possible decision of the Israeli government to free nearly 1,000 jailed Palestinians, including murderers, attempted murderers, accessories to murder and others involved in terrorism against Israel in return for the freeing of kidnapped Israeli serviceman Corporal Gilad Shalit as a tragic mistake.

Corporal Shalit was kidnapped by Hamas infiltrators in 2006 and has been held by the Islamist terrorist organization in Gaza since that date. Hamas’s Charter calls for the destruction of Israel (Article 15) and the murder of Jews (Article 7).

Among those likely to be freed, for example, will be the woman who drove the 2001 Jerusalem Sbarro pizzeria bomber, who murdered 15 Israelis and maimed dozens more. Many others will be terrorists who directly committed murders. Also likely to be released with be Marwan Barghouti, the Fatah figure who commanded the Tanzim terror squads during the early years of the Palestinian terror wave beginning in September 2000 and who was arrested by Israeli forces in 2002 and imprisoned after being found guilty on five counts of murder.

ZOA National President Morton A. Klein said, “We oppose this mass release of jailed terrorists for three primary reasons: it will result in more murdered and maimed Israelis, because many freed terrorists have returned to terror and claimed lives in the past. It will encourage more kidnappings of Israelis by Hamas and other terror groups as a means to extract their terrorists from Israeli jails, as they have just again succeeded in doing. And it will also give a boost to the most murderous elements in Palestinian society, especially Hamas, at once rewarding terrorists and encouraging them to continue shedding blood.

“This release of 1,000 terrorists in return for one kidnapped Israeli also shows the slippery slope down which Israel is falling. At one time, Israel would release terrorists, but not those with ‘blood on their hands’ – a misleading euphemism for terrorists who failed to kill or who did not directly commit terrorist murders themselves – and only in return for live Israelis.

“By July 2008, however, Israel had agreed to release to Hizballah a gruesome murderer, Samir Kuntar, and four others prisoners in return for the corpses of two kidnapped Israelis. In August 2008, it also freed a further 198 jailed terrorists, including two convicted murderers and 149 others guilty of attempted murder, as a ‘confidence-building measure.’

In October this year, in return for a mere video of Gilad Shalit, Israel freed 20 Palestinian prisoners. Now it has agreed to release a staggering 980 prisoners to Hamas to secure Shalit’s return.

“Clearly, Israel is giving more and receiving less – and that is not the worst of it. The fact is that freed terrorists frequently return to terror and end up murdering more Israelis. The evidence for this is clear: Col. Meir Indor, Director of Almagor Terrorist Victims Association (ATVA), disclosed in April 2007 that 177 Israelis killed in terror attacks in the previous five years had been killed by terrorists freed on the basis that they were “without blood on their hands.” An earlier ATVA report showed that 123 Israelis had been murdered by terrorists freed during 1993-99.

“Evidently, Israelis were fooling themselves if they thought that freeing attempted murderers and accessories to murder carried few risks. Freed terrorists, whether they succeeded to kill or not, often try to kill again. This aspect of the problem is routinely ignored by in discussion of prisoner releases.

“Freeing terrorists in exchanges of this type provide a major incentive for more kidnappings of Israelis. As Hamas chief Khaled Mesahaal said only days ago, ‘The resistance … is capable of capturing [another] Shalit and [another] Shalit and [another] Shalit, until not a single prisoner will remain in the enemy’s jails.’

“Israelis’ willingness to release live terrorists in return for even dead soldiers provided the terrorists all the incentive they required. Moreover, where Israel frees terrorists for corpses, it endangers the lives of those kidnapped, because it demonstrates that their deaths pose no obstacle to an exchange. This puts the lives of future kidnap victims in jeopardy.

“Have we learned nothing from bitter experience? Freeing even hundreds of terrorists has never improved Israel’s standing among Arabs, moderated their demands or mollified their hatreds. As Brig.-Gen. (res.) Shalom Harari of the Institute for Counter-Terrorism at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya noted after this very prisoner release: ‘On the morning after … we heard Fatah blaming Israel. Whatever happens, they will blame Israel and fault everyone except for themselves.’

“The appeals to put ourselves in the shoes of the families of the kidnapped are deeply moving and understandable, but remain false and can also be emotionally manipulative. In any event, they cannot be decisive. Would we allow relatives of people held up by bank robbers to decide whether or not the police accede to the demands of their captors?

“The duty of the state is to protect its citizens. It follows that the most important consideration must be preventing the loss of further lives to terror.

“We deeply sympathize with Israeli families when their sons are kidnapped by bloodthirsty terrorists. We would support virtually any efforts to bring them home safely. But when the record plainly shows that releasing terrorists brings only more terror and tragedy, the painfully necessary course of action is clear – no more rewarding kidnappings through terrorist releases.”

Terroristerna styrde båten mot Syrien och krävde bland annat att barnamördaren Samir Kuntar skulle friges. Syrien utsattes för stark press från flera länder och beslutade att neka fartyget tillträde till hamnen i Tartus. Efter flera dagars hårda förhandlingar beslutade terroristerna att ge upp om de fick frilejd.

“We turned Kuntar into God-knows-what – the murderer of Danny Haran and his daughter, Einat. The man who smashed in the girl’s head. That’s nonsense. A story. A fairy tale. He told me he didn’t do it and I believe him. I investigated the event within the framework of the next book I am writing, about hostage-taking incidents. As far as I am concerned, it was no more than a newspaper report. I sat with him; he was very intelligent. He was a squad commander at 17. He told me that his motive for infiltrating Nahariya was to take hostages. He said [his organization] knew that would both humiliate Israel and get them media publicity.

“He told me: ‘If I had wanted to kill Danny and his daughter, I would have shot them in the house. I took them to the boat because I wanted hostages. I had no interest in hurting them. After I got them into the boat, wild gunfire started and I went back to help my squad on the shore. Danny, the father, kept shouting, “Stop firing, you crazy people.” He and his daughter were found shot in the boat. I was on a small rise, shooting at your forces, and the boat was 20 meters away in the water, with Danny and the girl.’”

When will our luminaries stop making excuses for terror?

This week marks the seventh anniversary of the murder of our son, former Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. My wife Ruth and I wonder: Would Danny have believed that today’s world emerged after his tragedy?

The answer does not come easily. Danny was an optimist, a true believer in the goodness of mankind. Yet he was also a realist, and would not let idealism bend the harshness of facts.

Neither he, nor the millions who were shocked by his murder, could have possibly predicted that seven years later his abductor, Omar Saeed Sheikh, according to several South Asian reports, would be planning terror acts from the safety of a Pakistani jail. Or that his murderer, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, now in Guantanamo, would proudly boast of his murder in a military tribunal in March 2007 to the cheers of sympathetic jihadi supporters. Or that this ideology of barbarism would be celebrated in European and American universities, fueling rally after rally for Hamas, Hezbollah and other heroes of “the resistance.” Or that another kidnapped young man, Israeli Gilad Shalit, would spend his 950th day of captivity with no Red Cross visitation while world leaders seriously debate whether his kidnappers deserve international recognition.

No. Those around the world who mourned for Danny in 2002 genuinely hoped that Danny’s murder would be a turning point in the history of man’s inhumanity to man, and that the targeting of innocents to transmit political messages would quickly become, like slavery and human sacrifice, an embarrassing relic of a bygone era.

But somehow, barbarism, often cloaked in the language of “resistance,” has gained acceptance in the most elite circles of our society. The words “war on terror” cannot be uttered today without fear of offense. Civilized society, so it seems, is so numbed by violence that it has lost its gift to be disgusted by evil.

I believe it all started with well-meaning analysts, who in their zeal to find creative solutions to terror decided that terror is not a real enemy, but a tactic. Thus the basic engine that propels acts of terrorism — the ideological license to elevate one’s grievances above the norms of civilized society — was wished away in favor of seemingly more manageable “tactical” considerations.

This mentality of surrender then worked its way through politicians like the former mayor of London, Ken Livingstone. In July 2005 he told Sky News that suicide bombing is almost man’s second nature. “In an unfair balance, that’s what people use,” explained Mr. Livingstone.

But the clearest endorsement of terror as a legitimate instrument of political bargaining came from former President Jimmy Carter. In his book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid,” Mr. Carter appeals to the sponsors of suicide bombing. “It is imperative that the general Arab community and all significant Palestinian groups make it clear that they will end the suicide bombings and other acts of terrorism when international laws and the ultimate goals of the Road-map for Peace are accepted by Israel.” Acts of terror, according to Mr. Carter, are no longer taboo, but effective tools for terrorists to address perceived injustices.

Mr. Carter’s logic has become the dominant paradigm in rationalizing terror. When asked what Israel should do to stop Hamas’s rockets aimed at innocent civilians, the Syrian first lady, Asma Al-Assad, did not hesitate for a moment in her response: “They should end the occupation.” In other words, terror must earn a dividend before it is stopped.

The media have played a major role in handing terrorism this victory of acceptability. Qatari-based Al Jazeera television, for example, is still providing Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi hours of free air time each week to spew his hateful interpretation of the Koran, authorize suicide bombing, and call for jihad against Jews and Americans.

Then came the August 2008 birthday of Samir Kuntar, the unrepentant killer who, in 1979, smashed the head of a four-year-old Israeli girl with his rifle after killing her father before her eyes. Al Jazeera elevated Kuntar to heroic heights with orchestras, fireworks and sword dances, presenting him to 50 million viewers as Arab society’s role model. No mainstream Western media outlet dared to expose Al Jazeera efforts to warp its young viewers into the likes of Kuntar. Al Jazeera’s management continues to receive royal treatment in all major press clubs.

Some American pundits and TV anchors didn’t seem much different from Al Jazeera in their analysis of the recent war in Gaza. Bill Moyers was quick to lend Hamas legitimacy as a “resistance” movement, together with honorary membership in PBS’s imaginary “cycle of violence.” In his Jan. 9 TV show, Mr. Moyers explained to his viewers that “each [side] greases the cycle of violence, as one man’s terrorism becomes another’s resistance to oppression.” He then stated — without blushing — that for readers of the Hebrew Bible “God-soaked violence became genetically coded.” The “cycle of violence” platitude allows analysts to empower terror with the guise of reciprocity, and, amazingly, indict terror’s victims for violence as immutable as DNA.

When we ask ourselves what it is about the American psyche that enables genocidal organizations like Hamas — the charter of which would offend every neuron in our brains — to become tolerated in public discourse, we should take a hard look at our universities and the way they are currently being manipulated by terrorist sympathizers.

At my own university, UCLA, a symposium last week on human rights turned into a Hamas recruitment rally by a clever academic gimmick. The director of the Center for Near East Studies carefully selected only Israel bashers for the panel, each of whom concluded that the Jewish state is the greatest criminal in human history.

The primary purpose of the event was evident the morning after, when unsuspecting, uninvolved students read an article in the campus newspaper titled, “Scholars say: Israel is in violation of human rights in Gaza,” to which the good name of the University of California was attached. This is where Hamas scored its main triumph — another inch of academic respectability, another inroad into Western minds.

Danny’s picture is hanging just in front of me, his warm smile as reassuring as ever. But I find it hard to look him straight in the eyes and say: You did not die in vain.

Mr. Pearl, a professor of computer science at UCLA, is president of the Daniel Pearl Foundation, founded in memory of his son to promote cross-cultural understanding.

Il terrorista Kuntar decorato da Assad

Il terrorista infanticida libanese Samir Kuntar, scarcerato lo scorso luglio da Israele in cambio delle salme di Ehud Goldwasser ed Eldad Regev (i due ostaggi israeliani rapiti e uccisi da Hezbollah nel 2006), è stato insignito lunedì dal presidente siriano Bashar Assad dell’Ordine al Merito, la più alta onorificenza del paese.

“Kuntar non solo è stato il più anziano veterano fra i prigionieri nelle carceri israeliane – ha dichiarato Assad durante un incontro con il terrorista a Damasco – Kuntar è anche il più autorevole fra gli uomini liberi e meritevoli d’onore. Il fatto che sia qui con noi e la sua determinazione nel promuovere i diritti degli arabi, nonostante tutto quello che ha passato, ne fa un simbolo della lotta per la libertà in tutto il mondo arabo e nel mondo intero”.

Kuntar, dal canto suo, si è detto onorato di incontrare il presidente siriano. “La valorosa posizione della Siria impersonata dal comportamento del presidente Assad – ha affermato – il suo appoggio alla nobile resistenza armata e il suo rifiuto di qualunque ingiusta soluzione costituiscono la base di ogni resistenza armata di uomini liberi e sono fonte d’ispirazione per la ferma posizione dei prigionieri ancora nelle carceri dell’occupazione israeliana”.

Il pluriomicida libanese, giunto venerdì scorso in Siria per una visita di una settimana, ha aggiunto durante l’incontro con Assad che “la grandezza della Siria sta nel fatto che, quando venni arrestato trent’anni fa, essa lottava fermamente contro Israele e oggi che sono qui, lo fa ancora. Porto con me in Siria, al presidente Bashar Assad, la benedizione dei combattenti per la libertà della valorosa resistenza islamica [Hezbollah], e porto la benedizione del popolo libanese combattente che prova per la Siria fedeltà e amore per la sua posizione, particolarmente riguardo alla guerra del luglio 2006 [la seconda guerra in Libano]”.

Poco prima, sempre lunedì, Kuntar aveva accompagnato 500 drusi siriani al confine con Israele dove aveva esclamato: “Molto presto Assad sventolerà la bandiera siriana sulle alture del Golan”.

Kuntar ha aggiunto d’essere pronto a prender parte a qualunque missione che gli fosse assegnata e di non rammaricarsi affatto per la “missione” condotta a Nahariya nel 1979 (durante la quale causò la morte a sangue freddo di un adulto, due bambine e un poliziotto).

A British woman who worked as a television executive at Al-Jazeera has taken the Arab news channel to court, alleging religious and sex discrimination on the job.

Josephine Burgin, 49, is appearing before an employment tribunal in London this week. She claimed in testimony on Tuesday that she suffered discrimination as a woman and a Christian at the broadcaster’s English-language service, where she worked for two years as head of planning

MIN SEMESTER i Israel sammanföll med återlämnandet och begravning av två israeler som kidnappades och dödades år 2006 av libanesiska Hizbollahterrorister.

Familjerna och en hel nation hölls medvetet i ovisshet om deras öde i hela två år.

Vad fick Hizbollah i utbyte?

De fick frihet för Samir Kuntar, en libanes som för 30 år sedan dödade en 28-årig israel inför ögonen på hans 4-åriga dotter, och sedan krossade flickans huvud mot en sten. I Libanon välkomnades Kuntar som hjälte. Libanons premiärminister Saniora hyllade hans frigivning som ”en nationell framgång”.
Tillsammans med Kuntar överlämnades kvarlevorna av en kvinnlig terrorist, Dalal Mughrabi. Palestinska myndigheten (PA) krävde hennes kropp eftersom man ville fira hennes ”hjältemodiga gärningar”.
Det som gjort Dalal Mughrabi så berömd att Hizbollah och PA slåss över hennes kvarlevor är att hon i mars 1978 utförde en terrorattack som lämnade trettiosex israeliska civila döda, varav tretton barn.

PAs tidning Al-Hayat Al-Jadedda hyllade Mughrabi som en ”levande legend och ett utmärkt exempel för alla kvinnor”.

Hizbollah, Hamas och PA anser dödandet av civila judar vara höjden på deras samhällsaspirationer. Israel ser att omvärlden inte gör något för att sätta stopp för denna makabra utveckling, utan tvärt om fortsätter att finansiellt hjälpa dessa organisationer trots att attacker mot israeliska civila fortsätter medan förövarna frisläpps i utbyte mot döda israelers kroppar.

180 israeler har mördats av frisläppta terrorister sedan år 2000, barnamördaren Kuntar är bara den senaste i raden.

I Israel förstår man inte varför omvärlden inte avkräver islamisterna samma standard. Efter Kuntars frigivande anser man här att bestialiska mördare bör skickas tillbaka i kistor.

Detta bådar inte gott för Gaza. Med israelen Gilad Schalit fortfarande kidnappad i Gaza i mer än två år, kommer förmodligen Gazaborna i en nära framtid att betala ett högt pris för detta brott mot mänskliga rättigheter. Redan nu höjs röster för att allt vatten och el skärs av tills Schalit frisläpps. Förmodligen kommer detta inte att resultera i hans frigivning, utan kanske åtföljas av dagliga israeliska bombningar mot på måfå utvalda mål i Gaza, på samma sätt som den israeliska staden Sderot har utsatts för bombardering med fler än 8000 missiler från Gaza under de senaste sju åren. Gazaborna kommer att betala ett högt pris för Gilad Schalits fortsatta fångenskap medan omvärlden inte lyfter ett finger för att hjälpa honom, lika lite som omvärlden hjälpte de två soldaterna som Hizbollah höll i två år och skickade tillbaka i kistor.

Hizbollah, som idkar människohandel, har visat att terror betalar sig. Varför skulle Hamasterrorister överlämnar en levande jude när Israel är berett att betala vad som helst för att få tillbaka en död kropp? Att döda judar är ju själva idén med terrorattackerna.

Redan för 60 år sedan sade man ”aldrig mer” när terror utövades av nazister på judar i Europa, men samma mönster upprepas idag av nazisternas arvtagare i arabvärlden.

Veckan efter att två israeler begravdes inser Israel att man bara kan lita på sig själv. Kostnaderna i arabiska liv och egendom för framtida kidnappningar – för de kommer nu obönhörligen att ske – kommer att sättas på EUs, FNs, Kvartettens och Röda Korsets konto: alla de som satt och sitter tysta medan en hel nation hålls som gisslan.

Ett av begravningstalen hölls av en av offrens bröder. Denne visade på den grundläggande värdeskillnaden mellan Israel och landets fiender.

Vi levde i en värld där vi trodde att vår fiende var som oss, att vi kunde prata med människor som också ville ge sina barn ett gott liv, som också ville se blommor växa, finna sin stora kärlek och bilda familj. Precis som vi. Men det visade sig att våra fiender är vår raka motsats och att vi inte har något gemensamt. Men trots det kommer vi inte att sluta försöka.

Han sade vidare att han var stolt över att han tillhörde en nation som värdesätter kärlek högre än hat.

Sverige stöder det cyniska spelet

TORSDAG den 28:e augusti är den tredje födelsedagen som en israelisk soldat, Gilad Schalit, tillbringar i fångenskap sedan han kidnappats, blott 18 år gammal, av palestinska regeringspartiet Hamas.

Pojken har sedan dess hållits inspärrad, utan tillgång till Röda korset, läkarvård, advokat eller besök av anhöriga. Hamas meddelar att pojken under dessa år aldrig tillåtits att få fysisk motion i solljus.

Det finns omkring 8.500 palestinsk-arabiska fångar i israeliska fängelser. Att sitta i fängelse är knappast en semester för de intagna, men de har mord, massmord och annan terrorverksamhet på sitt samvete.

Resultaten av deras aktiviteter finns att räkna bland tusentals slaktade och lemlästade civila israeler som åkte buss, gick på restaurang, bodde på hotell eller helt enkelt nattade sina småbarn hemma i sovrummet.

Ett exempel på en terrorist i israeliskt fängelse är – eller rättare sagt var – Samir Kuntar, som nyligen släpptes av Israel. Kuntar fängslades för att han dödade en ung israelisk pappa framför ögonen på hans fyraåriga dotter, varefter han krossade flickans huvud mot en sten. Liksom alla andra fångar åtnjöt Kuntar rättigheter som är garanterade i det israeliska rättsväsendet. Sålunda besöktes han av Röda korset och hade obehindrad tillgång till advokat, journalister, familjemedlemmar. Han fick gifta sig, åtnjöt äktenskapliga besök, tog universitetsexamen, och han lämnade israeliskt fängelse som en välgödd man som välkomnades varmt av både Palestinska myndighetens Mahmoud Abbas och Hizbollahs Nasrallah. Frisläppandet till ära bar den korpulente Samir Kuntar på en liten Hitlermustasch och gjorde Hitlerhälsningen när han välkomnades i Beirut.

En enorm kontrast mot den unge israelen Gilad Schalit, som ännu i det tredje året efter att han kidnappats från det suveräna Israel – inte från någon omstridd del av marken – ännu inte ens fått se solljus, än mindre fått prata med eller skriva till sina anhöriga, advokater, Röda korset. Ändå klagar de palestinsk-arabiska fångar, när de tar emot sina otaliga besök av Human Rights Watch, Röda korset, advokater, journalister och anhöriga, på att deras boende inte är lika bekvämt som de önskar.

Frågan är om någon av dem vill för en enda vecka byta plats med Gilad Schalit, som av Hamas hålls inspärrad i en underjordisk håla.

Sverige ger stora bidrag till Palestina-araber. Procentuellt sett ger Sverige mest i hela världen. De får våra skattepengar utan minsta krav på motprestation. Med andra ord betalar vi i Sverige för att de gör sig skyldiga till denna och andra bestialiska aktioner – i full strid mot Genèvekonventionen och mot allt vad mänskliga rättigheter och ren anständighet heter.

Om Gilad Schalit är en krigsfånge, har han rätt att behandlas i enlighet med de regler som vi i Sverige har skrivit under. Om vi ger stora donationer till organisationer som öppet bryter mot dessa regler, gör Sverige sig skyldig till medhjälp – eftersom den olagliga fångenskapen utan besök, advokat eller ens anklagelse inte skulle kunna fortsätta om vi krävde motprestationer i utbyte mot våra pengar.

För ett par dagar sedan släppte Israel ytterligare 198 palestinsk-arabiska fångar. Mahmoud Abbas, istället för att välkomna deras frisläppande som en försoningsgest och uttrycka sin vilja att motprestera genom att verka för Gilad Schalits frisläppande, sade att detta bara är början – nu kräver han att bland annat att Marwan Barghouti, som sitter inne med fem livstidsdomar, också ska släppas från israeliskt fängelse.

I Israel arbetar man för att få en oskyldig ung grabb frisläppt. I det palestinskt-arabiska samhället kräver man istället att massmördare släpps fria – under förutsättning att deras offer är judar.

Det är viktigt att hålla i minnet att när Mahmoud Abbas kräver frihet för Barghouti och firar frisläppandet av barnamördaren Kuntar, är han ändå en av de mer “moderata” gestalterna i det palestinskt-arabiska samhället.

Och det är ännu viktigare att hålla i minnet att inget av det palestinskt-arabiska samhällets lagstridiga och motbjudande människohandel hade varit möjligt utan svenskt finansiellt bistånd.
Det tål att tänkas på i dessa nedskärningstider.

Haaretz erhielt die Kopie eines Briefes von Khanfar Wadah; Fernsehdirektor bei Al-Jazeera, in dem er sich für die Geburtstagsparty entschuldigte, die der Sender für Samir Kuntar ausgerichtet hatte.

…..„Elemente des Programms“ das zu Ehren Kuntars in der Nacht auf Samstag, den 19. Juli, ausgestrahlt worden war, „haben den Verhaltenskodex [des Senders] verletzt“ und er „betrachtet diese Übertretungen als sehr ernst“.

Nach Betrachten des Videos* frage ich mich, welche Inhalte eigentlich nicht abstoßend waren.

Nachdem der Mörder Samir Kuntar von Israel im Austausch gegen die Leichen der von der Hisbollah entführten Soldaten Eldad Regev und Ehud Goldwasser freigelassen worden war, hatte der Beirut-Korrespondent des arabischen Fernsehsenders Al-Dschasira, Ghassan bin Jiddo, Kuntar als “panarabischen Helden” bezeichnet, schreibt die Haaretz. Bin Jiddo, der als Hisbollah-Sympathisant berüchtigt ist, hatte Kuntar in einer Live-Sendung auf Al-Dschasira persönlich begrüßt und ihm eigens eine Torte überreicht.

Zu der Entschuldigung kam es, nachdem das israelische Presseamt angekündigt hatte, fortan nicht mehr mit Al-Dschasira zu kooperieren. Daraufhin rang sich der Al-Dschasira-Direktor Khanfar Wadahes zu einer lauwarmen Distanzierung durch: Die Sendung widerspeche dem sendereigenen Ethikkodex, und dergleichen werde sich nicht wiederholen.

Fragt sich nur, was solche Worte bedeuten, solange jemand wie Ghassan bin Jiddo seinen Job behält.

A response to the criticism over the Montreal Gazette Op-Ed “A moment of moral clarity“

How do you welcome a child murderer as a hero?” I asked in a recent Montreal Gazette op-ed, responding to Israel’s hostage exchange with Hizbullah. I noted that “depending on the tone, this question becomes an attempt to clarify, or an expression of outrage. Stated calmly, ‘How do you welcome a child murderer as a hero?’ can be a factual question – such as the one that faced Lebanese leaders this week as they proceeded to celebrate the freeing of Samir Kuntar from an Israeli prison, where he had been held since 1979 for murdering four-year-old Einat Haran, her father Danny Haran and a policeman. Stated angrily, ‘How do you welcome a child murderer as a hero?’ is the question Israelis are asking – and the rest of the civilized world should be asking, too.”

The article was titled “A moment of moral clarity.” I lamented decades of relativistic and self-flagellating propagandizing blinding Westerners from distinguishing between civilized and barbaric behavior whenever Westerners were in the right. Nevertheless, I insisted, the prisoner exchange illuminated the differences between the Lebanese and Palestinians who celebrated a child killer and the many Israelis who mourned the deaths of Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser.

I concluded: “We want to side with the country that moves heaven and Earth to bring its boys home, to protect its citizens; not with the country of bloodthirsty mobs deifying cowards who smashed the skull of a four-year-old girl with a rifle butt on a lovely Mediterranean beach. We learn about a people by observing whom they love and whom they hate. Joy is fleeting and often triggered by base instincts. Sometimes collective anguish is a sign of moral strength, not national weakness.”

INEVITABLY, THE gravitational physics of the Middle East conflict kicked in and the article triggered a backlash. Shortly after the article appeared, the leading headline in the Gazette’s “Letters to the Editor” section proclaimed “Troy overlooked the deaths in Lebanon.” The letter-writer said I ignored the hundreds of Lebanese and Palestinian children Israel killed since 2000 “in contrast to the 123 Israeli children who have died since 2000. Clearly, Israel does not celebrate life and certainly does not share Canadian values as Troy would have us believe.” Another letter, headlined “Israel is also unjust,” blasted Israel’s “illegal occupation of Palestinian and Lebanese territories.”

These reactions proved my point. Rushing to indict Israel, the critics ignored the obscene spectacle of the Kuntar homecoming. They missed the essential moral difference illustrated by Israel’s heartbreaking “hostage” exchange. Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev were reluctant citizen-soldiers, compelled to defend their country. Whatever violence they unleashed while serving – or whatever violence Israel unleashed after they were ambushed – never triggered any street festivals. Treating violence as a necessary last resort is very different than celebrating violence as proof of national self-worth. It would be immoral if Israelis refused to defend themselves, considering the assaults they endure. It would also be immoral if Israelis delighted in the deaths of any innocents, be they children or adults.

Yes, dead is dead. An individual is no better off being killed by an errant shell than being slaughtered in a targeted terrorist attack. But the rules of war distinguish between the two incidents, emphasizing not just the killers’ intentions but their reactions to the deaths.

We can and should debate how much Western soldiers, including Israelis, ignore the consequences of their actions. But there remains a huge moral gap between the ethical imbroglios of the Israeli soldier forced to fight and the canonization of violence that has overwhelmed Palestinian culture.

HERE THEN is the Palestinians’ great moral blind spot – and the chief sin of their uncritical fans. The Palestinian approach to violence has become increasingly pornographic – meaning focused on arousal. Initiating violence for effect rather than to defend oneself or advance strategic goals, seeking carnage to stimulate national pride, is a particularly twisted and sterile form of warfare. We have become too used to terrorism, too inured to its nihilistic nature. We risk losing our capacity for outrage as we observe and rate the constant attempts to choreograph just the right dance of death that will destroy the most, generate maximum news coverage, strike the greatest terror in Israeli hearts. Terrorists turns cafes into targets, and bulldozers – vehicles for building – into weapons of destruction not realizing the destructive force such actions unleash in their own society, and their own souls.

Addicted to the drama, lazily sticking to the established plot lines, reporters focus on how much these “operations” succeed or fail – the greater the damage the greater the success. But these journalistic narratives overlook what this pornographic approach to violence does to a people’s collective soul. We are who we worship. A society that deifies child killers and rampaging bulldozer operators, a culture of martyrdom that venerates the violent, is a nation destined to fail, not to build.

This addiction to terrorism has derailed the Palestinian national movement, poisoning what it touches. The Palestinian soul has been curdled by repeatedly toasting the brutality of a Samir Kuntar, the thuggishness of the bulldozing maniacs Husam Taysir Dwayat and Ghassan Abu Tir. The evidence is obvious but obscured by political correctness. Watching Gaza fritter away the opportunity the disengagement offered, seeing it develop into a hellacious slum rather than develop; observing the West Bank’s stagnation; witnessing the violence Hamas and Fatah forces unleash against each other – all illustrate the perils of this kind of pornography.

Alas, the false prophets of false equivalence, the cheerleaders for the cheerless, the mass enablers of Palestinian violence, would rather overlook the evidence. Instead, they do what they do best – bash Israel – targeting those who dare defend Israel in print and, most important, in uniform.

25/07/2008 La Anti-Defamation League (Usa) denuncia l’ondata di caricature comparse in questi giorni sulla stampa araba che rappresentano i due candidati alla Casa Bianca Barack Obama e John McCain come burattini controllati dagli ebrei. “I mass-media arabi da Gaza a Ramallah, dal Bahrain a Damasco, dal Cairo a Riyad – ha detto giovedì il direttore dell’ADL Abe Foxman – ancora una volta non hanno perso l’occasione per diffondere teorie cospirative antisemite secondo cui gli ebrei controllerebbero Washington e il processo democratico”. “Non sorprende che gli stessi mass-media controllati dai regimi arabi che hanno celebrato l’infanticida Samir Kuntar promuovano anche stereotipi antisemiti sulla cospirazione ebraica”, ha detto Kory Bardash, co-presidente dei Repubblicani all’Estero. Joanne Yaron, presidente dei Democratici all’Estero, si è detta “scioccata”, specie trattandosi di “fonti sotto controllo governativo”.

Berlin Backlash?

It seems not everyone in Germany was ecstatic about Barack Obama’s speech in Berlin.

German broadcasting station Deutsche Welle reports that those attending were told to leave their placards and posters at home.

The move came under criticism, especially from the German left, which speculated that the campaign wanted to avoid images of Germans displaying anti-American statements. Others say the ban was aimed at preventing activists from making demands on Obama.

And the senator’s visit will cost just over three-quarters of a million dollars — half of which will be paid for with German public funds.

Kiwi Bounty

It seems there will be no such hero’s welcome in New Zealand for Condoleezza Rice this weekend.

The New Zealand Press Association is reporting that Auckland University’s student association is offering a $5,000 reward to any student who can make a successful citizen’s arrest of the secretary of state.
Association president David Do says the arrest would be for Rice’s role in “overseeing the illegal invasion and continued occupation” of Iraq.

He adds, “It is hard enough living as a student in Auckland these days without having a war criminal coming to town, so we thought we’d give our students a chance to make a dent in their student loans and work for global justice at the same time.”

Not Reporting the Good News?

A sharp decline in the intensity of news coverage of the Iraq war immediately followed General David Petraeus’ testimony before Congress last September.

Cybercast News reports that data from the Multi-National Force-Iraq shows there were 219 embedded reporters in Iraq when Petraeus told Congress that the surge was working. That was also the month that the surge reached full force.

The number of embedded reporters has since dropped by 74 percent in nine months to just 58 in June.

The largest single-month drop in embeds came in October of 2007 right after the general’s testimony.

Not So Fair & Balanced

The Arab news network Al-Jazeera celebrated the birthday of released Lebanese terrorist Samir Kuntar with a cake and fireworks.

The Middle East Media Research Institute reports that Kuntar — who shot an Israeli child’s father in front of her and then beat her to death with his rifle in 1979 — was given a hero’s welcome on the network.

One interviewer said, “You deserve even more than this. I think that 11,000 prisoners — if they can see this program now — are celebrating your birthday with you. Happy birthday.”

Kuntar, who was part of that Israel-Hezbollah prisoner swap last week, was then presented with a cake and a collage of photos, including one of him and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. And as Kuntar cut into his cake the network set off fireworks.

We have New Zealanders and college pukes at Auckland University insulting the U.S. Secretary of State – and the America that sent her – with the same crazy antiwar garbage that our own equally anti-American liberals routinely vomit out.
