Asal is on cruise mode, aiming for a Pongal 2010 release. Latest news from the camp is that the central villain has just been cast and will be flying out to France in a few days to join the schedule. The chosen one is none other than Chennai 28 and Saroja fame Sampath. After impressive performances over the past couple of years, a big one was surely round the corner for this actor who also made his Malayalam debut this year. Being pitted against a charismatic star like Ajith is not an easy job, but Sampath has shown that he has the stuff to pull it off. As reported earlier, yesteryear actor Suresh too will be seen in a role with shades of grey in Asal.

After recent Diwali development, it has become almost sure that Asal is on course for a head on with Vijay’s Vettaikaran for Pongal. And, latest news is that the Telugu mega hit Magadheera will be dubbed and released for the festival season. With the competition heating up, the Asal camp too is sure to turn the heat on and leave no stone unturned to make it a cracking film.

Vaamanan is a Tamil action thriller film directed by debutant I. Ahmed, who worked as an erstwhile assistant to Kadhir, and starring Jai and newcomer Priya Anandh in lead roles.

Jai plays Anand, a young carefree boy from salem who comes to chennai to stay along with his friend Chandru (santhanam) to pursue his dream. His passion and new found contacts which he develops in chennai introduce him to a new world and what follows as an after effect is the crux of the story.

Vamanan is an action film which may take Jai to next levels. Rahman, Urvasi, Thalaivasal Vijay, Sampath, Santhanam are also acting in this film.

Something in this poster interested me, Either the Comics-book cover look or the Thrillers of 80’s appearance. Eitherway it has made a good impression and made me wait for the Fresh/creative film of the year 2009.

The impending movie of Director turned Actor Sundar C is directed by Veerappu fame Badri. Actor Sundar C is to play the lead maverick in Ayntham Padai together with Simran in a significant leading role. Like rest of his movies this also portrays an action saga with accurate importance for sentiments and romance. Ayntham Padai is produced by none other than his wife Kushboo. Music is by D.Imman who laid his benchmark with so many popular hit songs like “Azhgiya Asura” from “whistle”. Vivek is the lead Comedian with Nasser, Sampath, Madhan Pop, Arthi in character roles.

Saroja: From Class to Crass...

Riding on the huge success of Chennai 600028 and on huge expectations from the young crowd, Venkat Prabhu has set out on his new flick Saroja. Much has been spoken about the closely knit team and the boundless enthusiasm that they share. That is a good thing for with a good team comes a great working atmosphere. Unfortunately, Saroja seems to be caught between the choices of being so fascinatingly funny as in Chennai 600028 and the “need” to be different from its predecessor.

The plot spans one day in the lives of four laymen visibly heading towards their thirties, Ajay (Shiva), Ganesh (Premji) and the Babu Brothers (Charan and Vaibhav), who have planned to see a cricket match in Hyderabad. They set out on their bizarre vehicle on to the Hyderabad highway carrying along with them booze in hand and songs on lips. All is fresh and fun at this point and one can be hasty to label it the Indian reply to Easy Rider (1969) or more recently Little Miss Sunshine (2006). The group comes to a scene of accident and is forced to go through a different route. Thanks to the chutzpah of the lead, they take a wrong turn and so does the story.

There is also a parallel thread involving troubled businessman Viswanathan (Prakashraj) whose daughter, the nocturnal titular character, gets kidnapped and solicits the help of police officer Ravichandran (Jayaram) to save her. As events go from bad to worse, the four try to save their skin and return home, in the process meeting the hostage Saroja (Vega), at a pirate factory run by the hoodlum Sampath (Sampath). Additionally, there is a sub-plot involving Sampath and his lover Kalyani (Nikita) using which the filmmakers perhaps intended to portray the character’s depth. And that don’t work man! He is nothing but a textbook stereotype and a photocopy of himself from Polladhavan (2008) and Velli Thirai (2008).

After this point the film goes on. And goes on. And goes on. And goes on…And by the time the supposed-to-be all important scene nears, nobody cares. If you repeat a bad joke over and over, it eventually becomes hilarious. And if you repeat a good one over and over, it becomes sickening. Premji’s typically Kodambakkam attitude and surreal visions are amusing to begin with but as the film meanders, his lines are totally out of place and one feels that he should have had a “I’m just the token jackass required for comic relief” T-shirt on. The Dil Chahta Hai-esque magic that the friends shared in the first half hour is completely lost and one craves for those moments again.

I get the idea that a hand held camera enhances the restlessness and the thrill of a scene, but come on. Almost whole of the hour long showdown is presented in the headache inducing format and the clichéd rapid cuts are nothing but nauseating. And the editor’s scissors seem to be jammed at the most important places. On the positives, everything that takes place in daylight seems so close to heart and has the power to charm any audience. Only the end credits offer any consolation for the unwarranted kidnapping of those moments.

It is saddening to see a film that sets out as a fresh concept and ends up in the gutter of the bandwagon. In some ways, I am reminded of Chimbudevan’s decline after his charming debut in Pulikesi (2007). Venkat Prabhu looked consistent with his couple of films before this one and has ended up, fortunately, marginally better than the former. Let’s hope his penchant for depicting effortless ease among friends remains unmitigated and we get to see a real stunner next time around.

This weekend we had two teams in Bethel, in both of them the contact person for us was Hari!!

One team of 7 from Chennai (Hari, Vinod, Kesavan, Chandra, Mahesh, Robin and Yogi) and another from Bangalore which had 12 numbers)

As usual we had a surprise element too, Rajesh (Nelgi), Sampath had dropped in with a couple of friends of Ravi, in all they were 5 who had decided to raft and stop by for the night in Bethel on Thursday.

This article is to felicitate our honourable President, Dr.Pradeep SAM….NO…Its not a Typo…it is DR.Pradeep…i really don’t know what mischief this guy did in school for the title of Dr. to be conferred upon him. But yep thats how most of his school friends call him…”DOCTOR”.

Those who’ve been to his orkut/facebook profile would know that our president has styled his name as Pradeep “SAM”…wonder what his poor father is gonna think when he realizes his son has self styled his last name as SAM…instead of “Sampath”.

We all missed seeing our Presi’s face when sri vidhya mam came to class and announced us that prad sam has been elected as president…((wait a sec..elected?? sorry sorry selected.)) and the whole class instead of applauding burst into laughter..(HA HA HO HO)..Now since that day I’ve been pondering why our HOD selected this guy as President? Didn’t he have anyone better? Or did he confuse our President with someone else?? Cause even during our college symposium when everyone else were running about frantically, this guy alone was seen putting kadalai in the placement cell in the name of FORSEE..instead of manning his post as a member of the paper presentation committee (testimony from charan).So what could be the real reason behind our HOD selecting him? Comments are welcome ppl….But my belief is that he would have charmed our hod with his signatory 32+20brace smile(the very same one seen in this pic) and his turkey laughter…that goes like hehe hehe hehe….

The next day our President came to college very presidential looking in white and grey, brimming with excitement hoping everyone to congratulate him on his new promotion…But what to do, With creatures such as us as his classmates, we gave him a bungee Thrash, and sent him home with a sore Butt to mark the official anointment as president of ECE. After all to head us as President one requires a steadfast mind, And a stronger butt to bear with our thrashing after every successful event he presides as President.
Our president is a very altruistic being always caring for the welfare of others…The problem is his useless advices come when u really don’t need em…
