That song is called, “Hey”, by The Pixies.

I chopped up the sample, sent it to Seven…and…recreated one of my favorite rock songs of all time.

After smashing my iPhone 3G on top of Stone Mountain in Atlanta by accident, I decided to upgrade to the iPhone 3Gs. I have really been enjoying the upgraded camera and the video function. Enjoy the antics of my furry partner in crime, Winston, playing in my backyard.

Os cuento, en mi caso que soy estudiante de universidad, al tener una cuenta de correo universitaria se pueden pedir PIC con el fin de que puedas hacer tus proyectos, esto la hacen con el fin de que cuando tengas tus prototipos hechos, lo hagas con microchip y cuando tengas que hacer grandes cantidades los chips sean de esta marca.

Pero a lo que os interesa como se piden, entrais en la pagina de microchip http: www.microchip.com.

Despues vais a la pestaña de BUY/SAMPLES  y seleccionais samples y os lleva a otra ventana.

En la nueva ventana, bajo hay unas pestañas para elegir la familia de los PICs que quereis y al lado el PIC concreto, buscais el que mas querais (ojo solo se pueden pedir dos).

Vais a una lista del componente y aparece los distintos tipos de encapsulados, patas que hay y toda la pesca esa, los que se pueden pedir aparece a la izquierda un simbolo, lo seleccionais y os lo mete en el carro de la compra,lo haceis con los dos que querais.

Para acabar vais al carro de la compra, arriba a la derecha y dais a chech out, os registrais si no estais registrados ya (ojo con la cuenta de la universidad que si no no os lo mandan) seguis los pasos y a esperar a que os manden los PICs.

Por cierto yo pedi el PIC con el que se realiza el pinguino del post anterior, con lo que tenerlo ahora cuesta menos jejeje.

Il y a des albums dont on sait d’avance qu’ils vont créer le débat. Ou plutôt, qu’ils vont susciter l’enthousiasme aveugle des fans, et le cynisme assassin des détracteurs. Et avec un plan promo basé sur sa vie personnelle, Diam’s a choisi le choc frontal, en espérant que le voile qui le recouvre atténue la violence de l’impact. J’ai écouté “SOS” sans a priori, mon côté fleur bleu en éveil, presque dans l’attente de la bonne surprise, prêt à reconnaître que la rappeuse avait pris une autre dimension et qu’elle méritait mieux qu’une descente en règle de son album. Sauf que malheureusement, tout ce qui m’est venu à l’esprit, ce sont 5 raisons de ne pas aimer cet album.

5. Diam’s radote comme une petite vieille. Les morceaux qui composent l’album peuvent être classés en cinq thèmes: la religion, sa mère, les politiciens, les ruptures amoureuses, je ne suis plus la même. Libre à vous ensuite de les mettre dans l’ordre que vous souhaitez, et de les décliner à volonté dans chacun des couplets, même lorsqu’il n’y a aucun lien entre eux. Et d’agrémenter le tout avec 53 rimes qui utilisent “mail”, “marianne” ou marine”.

Alors écouter “SOS” d’un trait sans être soulé ou en sachant quel titre parle de quoi relève de l’exploit, tant les morceaux se ressemblent tous, comme sur une bonne vieille compil de Zouk Love. Dommage, car une seule chanson efficace suffisait pour exploiter chaque thème (“Poussière” et sa jolie image pas trop mal exploitée par exemple).

Je pensais que l’intérêt de faire un interminable morceau de 10min (“Si c’était le dernier”) était de tout raconter pour se laisser le temps d’exploiter d’autres sujets sur le reste de l’opus. Pas de refaire un autre titre de 9min07 pour expliquer que Tu Es Quelqu’un, et raconter encore une fois la même chose.

4. Diam’s manque cruellement d’originalité. Je ne parlerai pas de la couleur musicale qui reste inchangée par rapport au précédent “Dans ma bulle”, du piano-voix larmoyant et des mélodies simplissimes. Je ne parlerai pas non plus du débat houleux sur le magnifique sample de Sia “Soon we’ll be found“, honteusement pompé et saccagé par Street Fab sur le titre “Dans le noir”. Après tout, les reprises ont toujours existé, et chacun est libre de réinterpréter un morceau qu’il apprécie, ou d’écouter uniquement les originaux. Soit.

Par contre, le personnage hybride que tente de se construire Diam’s me gêne. Absorbant la marque de fabrique de ses artistes-référence, Diam’s se transforme en Cell (pour les fans de Dragon Ball) et reprend à son compte l’identité de Médine (défense ouverte de l’Islam et de la foi), Keny Arkana (séjour en hôpital psychiatrique, textes écrits à la lueur de la Lune, revendications alter-mondialiste et tiers-mondiste), Booba (couplets matérialistes aux métaphores extérieures de richesse multiples, intonations similaires) et Kery James (long morceau hargneux sans refrain, voix à la limite de la rupture et interprétation excessive).

Et si vous trouvez que mes références sont tirées par les cheveux, relisez les réponses de Diam’s du temps où elle donnait encore des interviews, ou faites attention à sa liste de MCs favoris dans “L’honneur d’un peuple”. Si vous avez un peu de temps, écoutez donc à la suite “Eh connard” et “La solitaire” (Keny Arkana) et “Le combat continue 3” (Kery James), puis enchaînez avec “Si c’était le dernier” (Diam’s). Et jetez également une oreille à l’excellent opus “Arabian Panther” de Médine, vous comprendrez d’où vient le côté religieux décomplexé de la Jeune Demoiselle.

A la différence près qu’après avoir écouté les morceaux originaux, on peut ressentir l’envie de faire la révolution, de devenir un imam ou de vendre des kilos de coke. Après avoir écouté Diam’s, on a juste envie de passer à autre chose.

3. Diam’s est un peu schizophrène. Elle l’avoue elle-même. Et même si elle essayait de le cacher, la vérité éclaterait au grand jour malgré tout. Parce qu’elle a cette faculté à rimer une chose et son contraire: elle ne veut pas grandir dans “Peter Pan” mais se grouille d’être un modèle pour les petites soeurs dans “L’honneur d’un peuple”. Elle repousse la gloire et ses paillettes maléfiques mais veut qu’on garde d’elle l’image “d’une fille qui rêvait d’être Reine auprès du Roi”. Elle revendique des idées et une conscience politique mais avoue ne “rien comprendre pour l’instant”, toujours dans “Peter Pan”. Et qu’on ne me fasse pas croire qu’elle parle à la place d’un enfant de 6 ans, vu qu’elle évoque aussi ses impôts, ses PV, son pactole.

Elle veut être traitée comme un symbole, un modèle pour les femmes qui s’assument et qui luttent pour leur survie, mais parle encore de Petit Coeur qui se fait larguer par une Bombe (“Coeur de Bombe”) alors qu’elle approche des 30 ans. Diam’s n’a pas grandi en même temps que son public féminin, et conserve son discours destiné aux midinettes qui découvrent avec émoi qu’un garçon ne rêve pas que de jouer à Street Fighter IV le mercredi après midi.

Est ce qu’elle a mal choisi son personnage à marketer pour séduire le public le plus large possible, est ce qu’elle se ment à elle même en essayant de se persuader qu’elle ne vieillit pas, est ce qu’elle n’assume pas qui elle aimerait devenir? Elle seule peut répondre, mais pas à travers un album visiblement.

2. Diam’s vit dans un monde de Bisounours. A l’abri dans son refuge manichéen, la MC écrit ses textes à minuit dans le jardin du Bien et du Mal, éclairée par la Lune. Sans jamais trouver de juste milieu. L’Europe, c’est mal. L’Afrique, c’est bien. Le Gouvernement, c’est mal. La banlieue, c’est bien. L’homme, c’est mal. La femme, c’est bien. Il n’y a pas de place pour la nuance, pour la réflexion, pour le réél.

Toutes les mères sont des héroïnes, tous les enfants sont innocents, tous les métis souffrent, ce sont les hommes qui trompent et quittent, la drogue est partout, la variété française c’est nul. D’ailleurs, lorsque Diam’s demande ce que va faire la variet’ quand elle l’aura plagié, j’ai juste envie de répondre qu’elle peut faire un procès pour violation des droits d’auteur et récupérer une bonne partie de tes royalites et de ta fortune personnelle dont tu parles tant. Mais dans l’univers simpliste de la Boulette, qui se veut peut être être le reflet de sa vie, ce n’est pas possible d’être poursuivi à cause de son Art. Parce que le rap, c’est bien.

1. Diams n’est pas si authentique. Je m’explique. L’effort d’interprétation sur la plupart des titres de l’album aurait pu être intéressant et apporter un vrai plus artistique, mais verse trop rapidement dans l’agressivité mal contrôlée qui sonne faux. Le manque flagrant de sincérité me gêne, d’autant plus que j’aurai voulu la défendre, expliquer que la mise en lumière tardive de sa reconversion est déplacée, saluer la mise à nu d’une artiste qui a plus à perdre qu’à gagner, en bref, avouer à demi-mot que “SOS” de Diam’s n’est pas un mauvais album.

En choisissant d’exposer sa vie au grand jour, d’assumer ses convictions religieuses devant les caméras et de revendiquer cette force nouvelle trouvée dans la spiritualité, Diam’s donne juste l’explication indispensable à la compréhension de ses paroles. Parce que dans le fond, Diam’s souffre simplement du syndrome de la femme européenne blanche reconvertie à l’Islam. Elle veut en faire plus que les autres, elle estime qu’elle a encore plus de choses à prouver que les soeurs nées dans le Din, elle complexe de ne pas obtenir la reconnaissance automatique de sa foi et redouble d’efforts pour se faire accepter de sa comunauté d’accueil.

Quitte à livrer une liste de chansons remplies d’apparences, dans lesquelles Diam’s se noie et se perd à chaque mesure, trop obsédée par le regard des autres. Alors pour le coup, je dois reconnaître que le titre de son album est vraiment bien choisi.

A statistics professor was describing sampling theory to his class, explaining how a sample can be studied and used to generalize to a population. One of the students in the back of the room kept shaking his head.

“What’s the matter?” asked the professor. “I don’t believe it,” said the student, “why not study the whole population in the first place?” The professor continued explaining the ideas of random and representative samples. The student still shook his head. The professor launched into the mechanics of proportional stratified samples, randomized cluster sampling, the standard error of the mean, and the central limit theorem. The student remained unconvinced saying, “Too much theory, too risky, I couldn’t trust just a few numbers in place of ALL of them.”

Attempting a more practical example, the professor then explained the scientific rigor and meticulous sample selection of the Nielsen television ratings which are used to determine how multiple millions of advertising dollars are spent. The student remained unimpressed saying, “You mean that just a sample of a few thousand can tell us exactly what over 250 MILLION people are doing?”

Finally, the professor, somewhat disgruntled with the scepticism, replied, “Well, the next time you go to the campus clinic and they want to do a blood test…tell them that’s not good enough …tell them to TAKE IT ALL!!” (source)

John Oswald's 'Plunderphonics'

So, I’m about to start my final year dissertation on the subject of plunderphonia and I thought I’d crack out a little post on the subject to get my juices flowing (if I weren’t determined on making this post a pure stream of consciousness I’d definitely replace the phrase ‘juices flowing’).  Plunderphonia is a term used to describe the reworking of existing audio material into something new (literally ’stealing sound’ in a little fusion of English and Greek) – it’s what most people would think of today as ’sampling’.  It’s a pretty interesting subject and even though the term plunderphonia is over twenty years old it is perhaps more relevant today than it ever was due to the increase ease of gaining music for free.  If people are streaming music on Spotify and You Tube for free then why can’t people take this ‘free’ music and go on to do something new and invigorating with it?

For many the idea of reworking existing sounds into a new composition smacks of a lack of authenticity – it feels cheap and half-arsed.  However, for some it is no different to hearing a nice chord progression and reusing that in a creative and original way.  The problem in both of these cases are the words ‘new’ and ‘original’ – what constitutes this ‘bettering’?  Is the reworking merely reusing the positive attributes of the old recording whilst adding nothing to it?  Clearly this is all very subjective and would be extremely hard to quantify by a selection of unbiased musicologists, let alone a judge in a copyright case.  At the moment though, even ‘bettering’ is apparently still not a justifiable reason for reusing someone’s music without first obtaining consent, paying royalties etc.

The original pioneer in the area of plunderphonia was Canadian composer John Oswald who coined the phrase ‘plundephonics’ and released an album titled thus.  The album contained reworkings of individual tracks or a selection of an artists work (e.g. a reworking of Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring or an amalgam of many different Metallica tracks).  Skipping aside much of the history, the album was disseminated for free to reviewers and radio stations but was eventually pulled by The Canadian Recording Industry Association despite Oswald’s ‘not-for-profit’ attitude. [The album is still available digitally from here].  Since then many prominent people have discussed the issue but there are still so many grey areas.  Even trivial question such as ‘how much borrowing is too much?’ can’t really be answered in any authoritative sense.  For example Justice’s album Cross is said to feature around 400 uncleared samples but they are apparently too small or distorted to be recognized and as such nothing has been done about it (source).

As was mentioned earlier, reworking an actual piece of music is for many viewed as cheap and inauthentic whereas tracks that feature many similar features but perhaps are considered more pastiche than reworking (one of a plethora of example being the ‘trance’ style although every genre has it’s idioms and conventions) count as original and new.  Yet, we are at a point where people such as David Cope can create computer’s known as neural networks that, when fed a collection of sheet music by say Chopin, can regurgitate a work in the style of Chopin that is (at least to my ignorant ears) nigh on indistinguishable from the original.  [See the album Bach by Design].  Such heretical replication of teh masters of classical music may worry some people but to others the computer is merely doing what our brain is doing in discovering these new permutations on a style. In John Oswald’s paper Bettered by the Borrower: The Ethics of Musical Debt he cites a section from the story Melancholy Elephants by Spider Robinson which reads:

Artists have been deluding themselves for centuries with the notion that they create.   In fact they do nothing of the sort.   They discover.   Inherent in the nature of reality are a number of combinations of musical tones that will be perceived as pleasing by a human central nervous system.   For millennia we have been discovering them, implicit in the universe–and telling ourselves that we ‘created’ them. (original)

Whilst this passage is by no means evidence that music is maybe ‘discovered’ (and that therefore that this idea of creator’s ownership is in fact more of an infantile game of ‘finders-keepers’) it does help to raise a few questions about the ownership of music to anyone who hasn’t thought about it.  Even such seemingly intricate areas such as timbres are, for the most-part, very much idiomatic and genre-specific and perhaps in the future we will see neural networks decide on what harmonics and filtering to put on fundamentals frequencies depending on what the computer is fed.  Maybe, in genres where timbre is more varied and widespread, a computer may interpolate between the differing timbers in ways which a human mind never could and perhaps create timbres the likes of which we would never have thought of.  All of this is fairly tangential to say the least (and pie in the sky to say the most) but nevertheless, it all helps to emphasise that the idea of musical ‘ownership’ is something which should at least be challenged (although I haven’t even started to get into the ways in which Western laws discriminate between right and wrong in this area).

On reflection I personally believe there should be much more leniency in the reworking of existing songs.  However, there is obviously a problem in this commercial day and age with the problem of not actually ‘bettering’ the songs and as yet it appears there is no agreed method for judging this.  Unfortunately, many people don’t feel a need for this change and as such don’t feel a need to spend time solving a problem they don’t want fixed.  And yet, the people who do want it fixed can’t seem to find a method to rally around.  Until this changes musicians will have to rework the songs of the artists who work under things such as the Creative Commons Licence, pay money to those artists who are not under CC or the like or use samples that are ‘unrecognizable’ (whatever that may mean).  However, without the use of so many ‘recognizable’ samples composers will be unable to make good use of all the strong and specific cultural associations that are tied to any one of these songs – a true shame.
