Not an exciting photo today. Generally I find samplers full of possibilities, but  this time I’m just not sure where to go next.

Earlier I mentioned that my first project on the new ashford table loom would be a sampler using silk chenille from Beautiful Silks. The sampler is in 3 sections, sleyed at 10, 15 and 20 ends per inch.

I used 5 different wefts – the mulberry chenille as in the warp, tussah ribbon yarn, fancy spun silk, 20/2 silk and 12 ply silk sewing threads. The 20/2 silk was from Walters Import, the rest from Beautiful Silks. The 10 epi sample was all plain weave, the 15 epi was plain weave in each weft then 2/2 twill in each weft, the 20 epi 2/2 twill each weft.

What did I learn?

With chenille, keeping the yarn under tension is a must. Quoting a research paper I found here, A Study of the Basic Parameters Describing the Structure of Chenille Yarns by Erhan Kenan Çeven and Özcan Özdemir,  “Chenille yarn is a kind of fancy yarn which charms because of its gleam and softness. Chenille yarns are constructed by twisting core yarns together in chenille
yarn machines, where cut pile yarns are inserted at right angles to the core yarn surface to create a surface in which the fibres contained in the pile yarns burst and form a soft pile surface to the yarn.” Follow the link to the paper to see a nice diagram of this. The result is that the yarn is unbalanced – lots of excess twist.

First impact – I couldn’t tie temporary knots in warp and I couldn’t just let them go. The ends would just frizz and tangle crazily. I ended up using metal hair clips around groups of ends for temporary holds.

Second – when I got to the 2/2 twill section I wanted to add a floating selvedge. I put in an extra thread at each side, wound on a plastic bobbin and individually weighted. Dangling behind the loom, the yarn spun and untwisted, giving me spots with 2 empty core yarns and the cut pile drifting to the floor. Here is my improvised fix – a cloth held under the loom’s feet and falling behind the selvedge ends meant that the yarn bobbins couldn’t turn, so the yarn couldn’t untwist.

Third – see photo at right. I now know what people mean by “worms” in chenille. This section is 10epi, 12 ply sewing thread weft. My hem stitching didn’t stablise the end. After a gentle hand wash and press I was disappointed by the feel of the fabric and for some reason thought that throwing it into the tumble dryer would be a good idea. Oops.

On the plus side, I enjoyed using the new loom. Things moved smoothly and held firmly and it was overall very pleasant.

It’s just – I don’t know what to do next with any of it. None of it has the soft, luxurious feel I was hoping for. I’m also daunted by the natural colour. I was planning to dye warps, but I can’t imagine being able to without getting into a horrible tangle.

Any suggestions? I’ve seen various comments and tips on using rayon chenille on the web – maybe I should read through that and look for ideas. (I have a skein of handpainted (not by me) rayon chenille which feels softer and appears to have a less aggressive twist.) Some of the sections are a bit stiff for a scarf, but might be nice for cushions say (if I wanted some cushions). Perhaps my finishing technique needs improvement. Maybe embrace the worms, explore the possibilities for bumps or collapse with the high twist…

J’ai reçu hier mon dernier joujou, un sampleur Akai S3000!

Yesterday, i’ve just received my brand new toy (well, not so new…), an Akai S3000 sampler!

De plus, j’ai eu la plaisante surprise en recevant cette antiquité des années 90 de m’apercevoir qu’ il y avait un disque dur installé dedans et une extension de mémoire vive, ce qui va m’éviter de me prendre la tête avec des disquettes. Bref, il ne me reste plus qu’ à apprendre à me servir de cette grosse boite…

As a bonus, i’ve had the pleasing surprise to learn that there’s already an hard drive installed in it, plus extended memory, so i won’t have to deal with floppys drama. So, all i got to do right now is to learn how to use that big metal box…

Well, tonight I watched the Count of Monte Cristo (2002 version) and knit myself a handy-dandy lace sampler, featuring the ubiquitous cat’s paw lace stitch, which apparently can be made out of anything and everything (stitch-wise). Or just about. I only chose to look up and knit eight variations of the pattern, so this sampler can be considered expansive but certainly not all-encompassing. For the fibery freaks out there, this sampler was knit using KnitPicks Telemark in the Drift colorway on a nice pair of vintage size 4 US 10″ aluminum needles.

The top two stitches (which were the last two I knit, naturally) both feature a k2togtbl stitch. The left one is from Jennifer Jones’ blog,  The Knit Monster, and has a stitch called a double decrease, which I’d never done before. The double dec was interesting in general, as it creates a very straight bar running through the center between the yarnover. However, for the purposes of the cat’s paw motif itself, I thought it made the yarnovers below it look uneven.

The right one is Elizabeth Lovick’s version, from her website Northern Lace, which has, in addition to the k2togtbl, a k3tog in place of the double dec. I think this stitch, while it created an even-looking design, was not my favorite. The k2togtbl made one side look a bit “wonky” (there’s your techy term for the night) and the k3tog was quite simply, just a pain to do.

The bottom six cat’s paws were all knit directly from the chart compiled by Wendy Knits, as I have cited previously:

The top two motifs on the chart, as well as the bottom-most right one, all feature a sl1, k2tog, psso stitch between the final two yarnovers, and I rather like the way this stitch creates a nice roundness to the center knitted portion of the design. The top right one seemed to be most effective at this, in part because of the alternating k2tog and ssk stitches around the yarnovers. Every motif that used the mirror design of the ssk stitch (symbolized in this chart by the “\ ” mark leaning to the left) created a more round, even appearance in the final lace.

The second stitch down on the left side in the chart had a unique center yarnover, which I thought was interesting. However, it did not create the appearance of either a cat’s paw or a flower, but rather a simply honeycomb design. The two stitches that I found looked the most like cat’s paws were the bottom left design and the right motif in the second row up. The placement of the k2tog and ssk stitches caused the yarnovers to stretch toward the highest point, making the midle yarnovers so small they are almost nonexistant and creating very large holes at the base. They look like the arching, flexing claws of a cat.

Even as I begin to finish cataloguing and describing the different traditional cat’s paw lace motifs I’ve knit, I am seeing where I could have tried other variations of the stitch. For example, you could substitute the k3tog with any of the other patterns, or moved the k2tog to the other side of the “honeycomb”-looking one for a more even appearance. Really, the combinations and possibilities therein are nearly endless. I shall leave that for others to take on, however, as I am quite satisfied with my own results. Enjoy!

Erhältlich im Media Markt ist auch der Sampler “Reggae Jam Vol. 1″, welcher zwar weder offen homophob noch indiziert ist, wohl aber Musiker aus dem Genre der von uns so betitelten “Hassmusik” supportet. Neben kommerziell auch sehr erfolgreichen Musikern wie Shaggy oder UB40 finden sich auf der Zusammenstellung also auch Stücke von Beenie Man und Buju Banton.

Zusammen mit  Musikern wie Capleton und Sizzla gehören Beenie Man und Buju Banton zur Speerspitze menschenverachtender Musik. 

Unter anderem im Rahmen der Stop Murder Music Kampagne wurden Beenie Man´s Lieder wegen offener Antihomosexualität kritisiert. Sie enthalten laut Amnesty International USA Zeilen wie: „I’m dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays“ („Ich träume von einem neuen Jamaika, wo sämtliche Schwulen hingerichtet werden“). Er wird unter anderem vom deutschen Lesben- und Schwulenverband als Mitverursacher für eine Hetzkampagne gegen Schwule in Jamaika verantwortlich gemacht, die zu einem schwulenfeindlichen Klima beitrage, dessen Auswirkungen bis zu brutalen Morden reichten, da der in seinen „Songs offen zum gay bashing (Schwulenklatschen) und gar zur Tötung schwuler Männer [aufruft]“^.

Als Reaktion auf diese Kritik, die unter anderem in den USA zu Konzertabsagen durch MTV und Virgin führte, wiesen seine Konzertveranstalter auf Beenie Mans Unterschrift unter den so genannten Reggae Compassionate Act hin, mit der er sich von homophoben Liedtexten distanziert hätte. In Jamaika bestritt Beenie Man im Juli 2007 diese Selbstverpflichtung (“And mi neva sign it, yuh hear sah.”) und erklärte zugleich, dass es keinen Bedarf an homophob motivierte Gewalt und Morde gebe, aber dass er einen „schwulen Lebensstil“ nicht unterstütze, weil er diesen für unheilvoll halte: „We don’t need to kill dem. We just need fi tell the people dem the right ting because I not supporting a gay lifestyle because it’s not wholesome to me.“ Manche Beobachter in der jamaikanischen Presse sehen in seiner Aussage, es sei nicht nötig, Schwule zu töten, die Aussage, es sei “falsch”, dies zu tun.

Buju Banton veröffentlicht Stücke wie Boom Bye Bye, in dem es heißt:

The world is in trouble

Anytime Buju Banton come

Batty boy get up and run

ah gunshot in ah head man

Tell dem crew… it’s like

Boom bye bye, in a batty boy head,

Rude boy nah promote no nasty man,

them hafi dead.

Batty Boy ist eine Ausdrucksweise der Jamaikanischen Kreolsprache (Patois), die einen homosexuellen Mann beschreibt. In Boom Bye Bye fordert Banton also die regelrechte Hinrichtung (Schuss in den Kopf) homosexueller Menschen. Auch in jüngerer Zeit, als geplante Konzerte in Deutschland bekannt wurden, kam es zu Protesten, Konzertabsagen und einer Kampagne des LSVD (Lesben- und Schwulenverband in Deutschland e.V.).

Auch nach Druck seines Labels entschuldigte Banton sich nicht für diesen Text und reihte sich neben zum Beispiel Bounty Killer und Beenie Man in die Liste der Autoren homophober Lyrics ein. In Folge dessen engagierte sich Banton allerdings für die Benutzung von Kondomen. Ein entsprechender Tune findet sich mit Willy Don’t Be Silly dann auch auf dem 1993 auf Mercury veröffentlichten Longplayer Voice of Jamaica, mit dessen Erscheinen auch die Stiftung Willy ins Leben gerufen wird, die sich um HIV-positive Kinder kümmert.

Nach dem Tod eines engen Freundes, der 1995 bei einer Schießerei ums Leben kam, wandelte sich Banton vom Jungkünstler mit offensiven Texten zu einem bekennenden Rastafari, der sich in seinen Liedern von Slackness- und Gunlyrics abwendet und zunehmend spirituelle und gesellschaftliche Umstände thematisiert.

Buju Banton kann sich bis heute nicht gänzlich der Kontroverse vor allem um Boom Bye Bye entziehen, da er – ungeachtet verschiedener Proteste – in Jamaika noch immer teilweise homophobe Texte singt. Außerdem wird er beschuldigt, fortgesetzt und tatkräftig in die seiner Meinung nach durch seine Religion gerechtfertigte Diskriminierung homosexueller Männer einzustimmen.

Nach vehementen Protesten u.a. deutscher Schwulen- und Lesben-Organisationen gegen seine Battyman-Tunes wurde 2004 die Hälfte der in jenem Jahr angesetzten Auftritte in Deutschland abgesagt.

2006 meldete er sich nach 2-jähriger Pause mit dem Album Too Bad zurück. Mit Too Bad findet Banton zurück zu seinen musikalischen Wurzeln: Es ist sein erstes reines Dancehall-Album seit 1993 und wurde für den Grammy unter “Bestes Reggae-Album 2007″ nominiert.

Die Bundesregierung prüfte 2008 eine Indizierung seiner Platten.

Zu diesen “coolsten Coverversionen des Rock” steuerten Wizo 2004 den in den 90ern gecoverten Song “All that she wants” von Ace of Base bei.

Der Anfang der 90er Jahre aus gutem Grund veröffentlichte Nazis Raus Sampler wurde 2004 leider wieder aus gutem Grund neu aufgelegt. Wizo, die beim ersten Teil unberechtigterweise noch fehlten steuern nun den Smash Hit Raum der Zeit bei!

Das alte Slime-Label Weird System hat auf diesen drei CD´s eine Sammlung von deutschem Punkrock der Jahre 1977-2003 veröffentlicht. Ob Poppunk wie Die Ärzte, Old-Skool-Punk wie KFC oder Deutschpunk alla Toxoplasma: Es ist so ziemlich jede Unterfächerung des deutschen Punks vertreten. Wizo sind mit “Überflüssig” am Start.

Auf dem zum 10jährigen Jubiläum der Berliner Punkcombo Terrorgruppe 2003 veröffentlichten Sampler steuerten Wizo neben Bands wie NoFx, Die Ärzte oder den Donots einen Song bei. Der Errol Dunkley-Coversong “Ok Fred” wurde zwar bereits 1995 auf dem “Bring back the Vinyl” Sampler veröffentlicht, ist hier aber in einer neuen Version zu hören. Außerdem gab’s ein nettes Grußwort.

In Autumnal Fog ist eine weitere Sampler Reihe vom Skeksis Netlabel Projekt, von denen auch die “10 Songs For Free Download” Reihe stammt. Die aktuelle Ausgabe umfasst 3 CD’s voller Neo-/Dark-Folk, Black- und Pagan-Metal.

Curse – Kein Leben

Es ist selten passiert, dass ich nach der ersten Zeile eines Curse Songs einen so starken Drang verspüre schreiend zu skippen. Curse, kennt ihr ihn? Curse ist eine Instanz im deutschen HipHop, Curse ist der Papst des deutschen Raps. Ich erinner mich lebhaft daran, als ich beim Headbangen auf “Hassliebe” zu meinen ersten Gigs gefahren bin, und als ich dann wieder auf Hassliebe abgehend in Bayreuth nen hübschen Unfall gebaut hab. Glück gehabt. Curse jedenfalls hat uns leuchtend-augen Kinder des deutschen Raps geführt, wir haben seine prägnanten Gedanken bewundert.

“Und was ist jetzt?“
Der Song “Kein Leben”. Released wird selbiger im Zuge eines “Joint Ventures” von der ARCHE-Stiftung und verschiedenen HipHop Künstlern, darunter Curse, Prinz Pi und auch Urgestein Spax; “Deutschlands vergessene<n> Kinder<n>” soll mit diesem Sampler ihre “emotionale Armut” genommen werden. “Immer Zuhause, immer die die Jalousien runter, nicht nur dein Licht, auch deine Stimmung wurde dunkler [...] Keine Lust mehr was zu essen, dafür acht Zigaretten in der Stunde, du bestrafst deine Lunge [...] Du warst immernoch schön, immer noch sexy, du hast gewusst wie du wirkst auf uns männliche Wesen, doch dich selbst hattest du aufgegeben“
Curse – Kein Leben

Abgesehen von der mangelnden Eleganz der Sprache, eine konzise Beschreibung der Situation “emotional verwahrloster Kinder”. Beschrieben von einem Verstand, der trotz seiner scheinbaren Klarheit nicht bemerkt, wie er stereotypisiert und stigmatisiert, wie er sich Klischees bedient und die prekären Lebensumstände von einer Empore aus mit dem Zeigefinger skizziert. Ich bin verleitet das eine himmelschreiende Heuchelei zu nennen.

Die “Depression aus der Dose” – ein unkontrolliert wuchernder Topos eines jeden deutschen Rappers, der etwas auf sich hält. Von Rasierklingenliebe (Casper) über Poesie von “depressiven Streetgangmembers” (Kollegah) wird die deutsche Amateurlyrik dunkelschwarz. Und auch Curse wusste angeblich schon in seinem Song “Struggle” ganz genau, was Jugendliche dazu antreibt aus einem Plastikkuli Pot zu rauchen.

Während Casper sein “Emo-Pony” legitimiert (Kidding) und Kollegah ohnehin nur Spaß macht, bleiben wir aber wieder bei Rappapst Curse, der es scheinbar bitter ernst meint und immernoch glaubt, dass er einen Zugang zu der Zielgruppe hätte, die er zu erreichen sucht. Nein, ich nehme keine Widerrede an, keine Diskussion.

Wenn ich in meinem verdunkelten Zimmer sitze, und den Schritt in die Treibsandgrube, die Spirale, den Strudel oder sonst irgendeine von Denkern erfundene Metapher für die Depression, getan habe, zieht mich da kein Curse raus. Denn was seine Songs kommunizieren sind Kälte, Eiseskälte. Eine sichere Distanz, ein schneidender Verstand, ein starres, apollinisches Konstrukt eines Gehirnes ohne jegliche Herzbeteiligung. Wie will mich so ein Mensch verstehen ?

Hand auf’s Herz – diese Tendenz zeichnet sich schon deutlich seit Sinnflut ab. Der tiefe Schrei auf dem Feuerwassercover ist längst verstummt. Was bleibt ist eine stoische Gestalt mit erhobenem Zeigefinger.
Curse hatte immer schon Oberlehrerambitionen mit Leidenschaft. Doch letztere Komponente verfliegt und hinterlässt einen schalen Beigeschmack von Ignoranz als er seine imaginäre Borderlinerin die letzten Worten “… was stand in dem Abschiedsbrief, wie du hast mich krass geliebt?” entgegenplärrt.
Nach so einer Vorstellung frage ich mich tatsächlich, ob Curse nicht mindestens genauso gefühlsverarmt ist wie die intendierten Hörer.

Ich für meinen Teil bin traurig darüber; zumal die große Aktion gegen die “emotionale Armut” aufgrund ihrer schon lächerlich unklaren Zielerklärung nach außen nicht mehr darstellt, als einen bravotauglichen Versuch der Reinwaschung im Rahmen der “social correctness”:  “Die Kids nehmen Rap-Texte sehr genau wahr und leben diese dann nach. Dazu gehören härteste Alkoholexzesse genauso wie mitgefilmte Gangbang-Partys, die dann über Handys weiter verteilt werden.” (<a href=”http://rapspot.de/interview.php?id=94″> Rapspot Interview, zweite Frage</a>.
Jedes gut gemeinte Motiv in Ehren, solche verbalen Emissionen sind weltfremd, anmaßend und widersprüchlich, hat man sich doch in jeder “Deutschrap Podiumsdiskussion über den Aufstieg und den Niedergang des deutschen HipHop” darauf geeinigt, dass kein Raptext Kinder zum Mord und Exzess bringen kann, deren junge und unstete Persönlichkeiten nicht vorher durch schlimme Erlebnisse geschwächt worden sind.

Ich für meinen Teil werde mir den Sampler trotzdem anhören, denn vielleicht ist trotz allen schlechten Vorboten ein Künstler vertreten, der sich nicht eine artifizielle Geschichte aus den Fingern saugt, sondern einfach das rappt was er am besten kann. Für einen “guten Zweck”. Und wenn er Müttern beischläft.

Materials: Lisa yarns (Acrylic)

I am starting to make this sampler of woven patterns, because sometimes I feel like there is a weaver inside of me, that longs to weave. I am learning a lot, and I indulge in the process. It is a really time-consuming textile-making technique. I forget the time when I am on my table loom. Weaving has become therapeutic.

I will learn some pattern combinations, colors and perhaps materials. Right now, my loom has a rigid heddle. I have to devise temporary heddles before the rigid heddle, if I want to make complicated patterns. I will try one experiment with all three colors.

I am using cheap acrylic yarn for the weft. The warp is single thread of old white crochet yarn. I bought my Kirchner table loom from eBay. I actually first learned to weave using a foot loom early this spring. Table loom is so slow, but I get to learn a lot of the basics and I know what I will be looking for when I start looking for a larger loom with pedals and 8 harnesses.

 Nov. 20, 2009 update: Up to now, these are all variations using 2 string heddles. Something is strange with my camera. These are the same yarns, but the colors look different in both pictures. The latest photo is truer to life. I actually chose a cooler palette.

November 26, 2009 Update: This is going very fast. I am almost at the end of the 2 meter warps. This photo shows variations on a simple pattern using 2 shafts.

This week I finished Caroline’s birth sampler, adapted from La-D-Da’s Sweet Dreams pattern.

It’s at the shop for framing, but in the meantime, that means I’m ready to find a new project!

Choosing a new project is a delightful task in itself. I’ve got a good ten projects that I’ve already started and put aside. Those get high consideration. Then there are the many projects I’ve kitted up – that is, purchased the fabric and threads to go along with the chart.

In a category of its own is The Shores of Hawk Run Hollow, which I am stitching on 9 or 10 count fabric (like the stockings) with DMC Perle Cotton. For those of you non-stitchers out there, that just means “big.” The exaggerating, slightly rude woman in the cross stitch store said that this project would be “as big as a couch,” so I like to refer to it as my project that is as big as a couch. In reality, it will be approximately 2 x 3 feet. It uses an entire yard of fabric – think lap quilt size  – and its frame is like a small table. I should take a picture. It’s amusing to look at. If I could just keep the cats off it…

Next are the larger framing projects that I kitted in Oklahoma in April. I started Pains of Love, but I have two others kitted and unstarted too. Not to mention the wedding sampler (Marriage of Minds by the Drawn Thread) that I “am doing” for Allen and me. (Our five year anniversary in May will not see that finished, mostly because I put it aside after I stitched a whole swath of it in one thread rather than two, and I just can’t bear to pull all that out!)

It’s possible too that I buy something new every time I cross the threshhold of the cross stitching store. So I now have Prairie Moon’s The Red and The Black kitted up. And during the last visit, I picked up La-D-Da’s All Our Troubles. At first, I took the saying the wrong way – you think I’m a big whiner? But it stuck in my mind, and I kept thinking that I would chose my troubles over others’ and that maybe it meant more about being thankful for what you have and taking the bad with the good. Now it will go on my wall, to remind me of that.

All those choices, and I decided to stall. I’ve been working on Prairie Schooler’s set of Santa’s 12 Days of Christmas since 2007. (In fact, I’ve been working on it since the month I started this blog, which would have been a good time to follow through on the project and get it done for Christmas!) I finished the first six of them during that year in Paris, but when I started the seventh day of Christmas and stitched a swan in the wrong spot, I stopped and set it aside. Since finishing Caroline’s sampler, I’ve picked it back up and will have finished the seventh piece this week.

I won’t be as optimistic in 2009 as I was in 2007; I probably won’t finish it this year for Christmas. But with each piece taking about a week, the time is there…if I use it.
