To continue my love for Nashville, I dedicate this post to the city life.

The thing I love about Nashville is that you can go from rolling hills in the countryside to the hustle and bustle of the city in mere minutes. And, when you do get to the city, there is no city like Nashville. Every side street and every alley offers a new perspective to the “Athens of the South.”

These pictures were taken specifically for Vanderbilt Hospital. My cousin, Carrie, works on the myelosuppression floor and wanted some iconic pictures of Nashville to cheer the place up, so we went on a photo expedition and this is what we ended up with!

Angola 3 News interviewed Jeanne Theoharris who wrote an article this April at The Nation on the arrest, imprisonment and legal battles of Syed Hashmi, a U.S. citizen imprisoned in New York City prison with “Guantánamo-like conditions”.

Jeanne Theoharis is the author of an April, 2009 article in The Nation, entitled “Guantánamo At Home,” which focuses on the arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment of U.S. citizen Syed Hashmi in a New York City prison with Guantanamo-like conditions. Theoharis holds the endowed chair in women’s studies and is an associate professor of political science at Brooklyn College, CUNY.

Syed Hashmi’s trial will begin in New York City on December 1. The website www.freefahad.com explains that: “Syed Hashmi, known to his family and friends as Fahad, was born in Karachi, Pakistan in 1980, the second child of Syed Anwar Hashmi and Arifa Hashmi. Fahad immigrated with his family to America when he was three years old. His father said ‘We knew there would be many opportunities for us here in the United States. We came here to find the American dream.’ The large Hashmi family settled in Flushing, New York and soon developed deep roots throughout the tri-state area. Fahad graduated from Robert F. Wagner High School in 1998 and attended SUNY Stony Brook University. He transferred to Brooklyn College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in 2003. A devout Muslim, through the years Fahad established a reputation as an activist and advocate. In 2003, Fahad enrolled in London Metropolitan University in England to pursue a master’s degree in international relations, which he received in 2006. On June 6, 2006, Fahad was arrested in London Heathrow airport by British police based on an American indictment charging him with material support of Al Qaida. He was subsequently held in Belmarsh Prison, Britain’s most notorious jail.” For more information on the Hashmi case, also visit: www.educatorsforcivilliberties.org.

Angola 3 News: Can you please give us background on the arrest and prosecution of Syed Hashmi? For example, what are the charges against him? What is their evidence?

Jeanne Theoharis: In June 2006, Hashmi, who is a U.S. citizen, was arrested by the British police at Heathrow Airport (he was about to travel to Pakistan, where he has family) on a warrant issued by the U.S. government. In May 2007, he was extradited to the United States, the first U.S. citizen to be extradited under terrorism laws passed after 9/11. Since then, he has since been held in solitary confinement at Metropolitan Correctional Center (M.C.C.).

The U.S. government alleges that early in 2004, a man by the name of Junaid Babar, also a Pakistani-born U.S. citizen, stayed with Hashmi at his London apartment for two weeks. According to the government, Babar stored luggage containing raincoats, ponchos, and waterproof socks in Hashmi’s apartment and then Babar delivered these materials to the third-ranking member of al-Qa’ida in South Waziristan, Pakistan. In addition, Hashmi allegedly allowed Babar to use his cell phone to call other conspirators in terrorist plots.

The government has claimed that Babar’s testimony is the “centerpiece” of its case. Babar, who has pleaded guilty to five counts of material support for al-Qa’ida, faces up to seventy years in prison. While awaiting sentence, he has agreed to serve as a government witness in terrorism trials in Britain and Canada as well as in Hashmi’s trial. Under a plea agreement reported in the media, Babar will receive a reduced sentence in return for his cooperation.

A3N: What can you tell us about Hashmi as a person, especially your personal experience of knowing him when he was a student of yours?

JT: Fahad was a student of mine at Brooklyn College in 2002. An outspoken Muslim student activist, Fahad wrote his senior seminar paper with me on the treatment of Muslim groups within the United States and the violations of civil rights and liberties that many groups were facing. Needless to say, this feels particularly chilling—and no longer academic—as we have now witnessed his own rights being violated.

A3N: Since his arrest, what have the conditions of his incarceration been?

JT: Under special administrative measures (SAMs) imposed in October 2007 by the former Attorney General, Hashmi must be held in solitary confinement and may not communicate with anyone inside the prison other than prison officials. Family visits are limited to one person every other week for one and a half hours and cannot involve physical contact. While his correspondence to members of Congress and other government officials is not restricted, he may write only one letter (of no more than three pieces of paper) per week to one family member. He may not communicate, either directly or through his attorneys, with the news media. He may read only designated portions of newspapers—and not until thirty days after their publication – and his access to other reading material is restricted. He may not listen to or watch news-oriented radio stations and television channels. He may not participate in group prayer. He is subject to 24-hour electronic monitoring inside and outside his cell—including when he showers or relieves himself—and 23-hour lockdown. He has no access to fresh air and must take his one hour of daily recreation—when it is given—inside a cage.

As the expert testimony supplied by Hashmi’s attorneys in a pre-trial motion of December 2008 attests, the conditions of Hashmi’s detention may have severe physical and mental consequences and impair his mental state and ability to testify on his own behalf.

While former Acting Attorney General Keisler claimed that these measures are necessary because “there is substantial risk that [Hashmi’s] communications or contacts with persons could result in death or serious bodily injury to persons,” Hashmi was held with other prisoners in a British jail for eleven months without incident. The SAMs were renewed by Attorney General Mukasey in November 2008 and upheld by Judge Loretta Preska in January 2009, citing Hashmi’s “proclivity for violence.” There has been no change to the SAMs under the Obama Administration. They were renewed again by Attorney General Holder in early November 2009. Yet, Hashmi is not being charged and has never been charged with committing an actual act of violence.

Currently, according to research by The New York Times in February 2009, there are six people in the United States being held on pre-trial terrorism SAMs; three (including Hashmi) are under the jurisdiction of the Southern District of New York, which has long served as a stepping stone to national political office.

A3N: Looking particularly at the harsh solitary confinement imposed on Hashmi, how is this officially justified? Do you think the stated reason is the actual motivation, or do you think there are other reasons for the solitary confinement and other harsh restrictions?

JT: My colleagues and I have begun to come to the conclusion that the use of prolonged solitary confinement is a tactic to ensure convictions. Such conditions weaken people mentally and the toll of sensory deprivation and isolation simultaneously makes people more eager to take a plea or not able to fully assist their counsel. Most experts agree it is torture (see Atul Gawande’s “Hellhole” in The New Yorker). While our public discussions have tended to see torture as a tactic to get information, in cases like Hashmi’s, torture is being used to help secure convictions.

A3N: How are the prion conditions for Hashmi in N.Y.C. different from those in Guantanamo?

JT: There are key similarities of prolonged isolation and sensory deprivation between Hashmi’s treatment at M.C.C. in lower Manhattan and what we have heard of the conditions at Guantanamo. However, there has been much less attention to these inhumane conditions within the United States.

The focus on prisons like Guantánamo, Abu Ghraib and Baghram stems, in part, from a larger post-civil rights paradigm that assumes the judicial process is now fair in the United States and relatively incorruptible and thus it was necessary to go outside of the U.S. courts to do the extreme bad things.

Rather, what made Guantanamo possible stemmed from domestic legal practices, many already in place and many others expanded after 9/11, which have continued almost unabated under the Obama Administration.

A3N: With Hashmi’s trial beginning on December 1, what are activists currently doing to support him?

JH: Theaters Against War began holding weekly vigils in October to draw attention to the inhumane conditions of confinement and the due process violations Hashmi and others are facing within the federal courts. Artists and actors such as Wallace Shawn, Kathleen Chalfant, Bill Irwin, Jan Maxwell, Betty Shamieh, and Christine Moore have performed at the vigils.

A3N: Any closing thoughts?

JH: Three central Constitutional issues have become clear in the treatment of Hashmi and others within the federal system: the inhumane conditions of confinement, the abridgement of due process rights , and the lack of 1st Amendment protections.

If these are not addressed, then moving the Guantánamo detainees into the federal system does little to return America to the rule of law, of which we are rightfully proud. I am reminded of that quote by former Chief Justice Earl Warren in 1967, “”It would indeed be ironic if, in the name of national defense, we would sanction the subversion of…those liberties…which [make] the defense of the nation worthwhile.”

Das Kind ist am Sonntag gegen einen Baum gesprungen. Bewusst. Beim ersten Mal hat es noch ohne Blessuren geklappt, denn der Baum war ein Neigebaum. Beim nächsten Mal neigte sich der Baum nicht mehr und das Kind hat jetzt einen blauen Fleck im Gesicht, es flossen Tränen.

Das Kind meinte später, ich dürfe mir was wünschen. Wieso? Natürlich angelehnt an das Sams, das blaue Punkte im Gesicht hat, und bei jedem Wunsch, den sein Papa ausspricht (sie gehen immer in Erfüllung!), wird es ein Punkt weniger. Ich wünschte mir also unendliche Freizeit bedingt durch finanziell absicherte Abwesenheit von Arbeit (also einen echt hohen Geldgewinn jedweden Ursprungs).

Der blaue Punkt blieb und verblasst langsam, die unendliche Freizeit bleibt noch aus.

This post is not funny or really interesting to anyone but me. It is just a release of frustration that may seem small to some. I had the good intention this morning to take Jake to school instead of making him ride the Bluebird Special. I went out to warm up the Nissan Sentra Turbo leaving Jake instructions to get the garbage to take outside and meet me at the car. I waited and waited but we all know that 13 year olds move at the speed of drunk turtles. Jake finally gets in the car and as we pull out he tells me it took him so long because he was making his sandwich for his lunch. Just as he says that he realizes that he forgot his lunch. In a fit of aggravation I pulled back to the driveway only to notice the low tire-pressure light glowing fiendishly in the dash.  I get out and look at the front driver side tire and there in the sidewall is a two inch cut. The tire is not completely flat but well on it’s way. I inform Jake that he needs to partake of the County Greyhound because this was going to be a bad day for daddy.  I came back in the house and just sat here being mad at all that is the world. Then, I start the internet tire search to locate the best deal. After a few sites I determined that Sam’s was the way to go. I called them to make sure they had it in stock at the internet price. All checked out.

I filled the tire with air in hopes of just making it to Sam’s without ever having to actually change it. In my line of work I have already changed my fair share of tires and I avoid this when possible. I made it to Sam’s with no problems and for that I am thankful. I tried to enter the front door but I find out that Sam’s is only open for Business Card Holders from 8 to 10. Did the man on the phone tell me that when I called earlier? Not!!!  So I waited the twenty minutes and then I was let in to the precious domain that is Sam’s. I traveled to the Tire and Battery center where I found no one. After a few minutes I heard a few grunts and groans and determined that I needed to locate assistance myself instead of waiting. Tracking the noise I found the Sam’s Associate who was stacking tires. OK, he was doing his job, no fuss there. However, he was none too excited about me interrupting his tire wall building and his attitude was not really killing me softly. We worked out the details and I paid and yes……waited. It took about 45 minutes to have this one tire put on but I expect that. Referring back to my line of work I am well accustomed to waiting on vehicles to be fixed. I retrieved my key and my receipt and I was off.

That’s it. No blood, no murder, no trips to the hospital or even a manual tire change. It still wasn’t fun. In November I have both Jake and Michele’s birthdays to think about along with Christmas around the corner. This was just money I didn’t want to spend at this particular time. That’s all I have to say about that!

The Super Animal Machine or SAM for short comes from a design team called Red Magic based Hong Kong who also make the more well known CiBoys.

Apparently they are supposed to be aliens who have come to earth disguised as animals, although the only ones they make are variants on pandas. I’ve scratched my head about this one and the only logical reason I can find for the name is that they could have been called SPAM (Super Panda Animal Machines) or something similar which would never do. Anyway, daft name aside, the are so darn cute.

What I really love about these, apart from the cuteness, is that they are really solid and weighty. It’s nice to feel something that is really there and not something flimsy and breakable. They are around three inches tall and both theirs heads and legs are attached via ball and socket joints so that they can be posed at a jaunty angle.

You can pick a few up from online stores in the u.k for around the three pound mark but to get a better range you need to order from ebay stores in Hong Kong, just don’t buy more than £15 worth at once or you will be stung for shocking customs handling fees.

HBO—Nearly a year before Barack Obama announced his candidacy for the presidency on Feb. 10, 2007, filmmakers Amy Rice and Alicia Sams began to roll cameras on the young senator. Over the next 19 months, they found themselves traveling all across the country, chronicling the daily ups and downs of the campaign trail as experienced by Obama, his family, his staff and volunteers. While Obama’s meteoric rise to the White House has been well documented in the press, few have witnessed the behind-the- scenes story of the passionate campaigners who helped a young African-American freshman senator attain the nation’s highest office.

Rice conceived the idea of making a documentary about Obama long before the Illinois Senator announced his decision to run for president. Inspired by his oratorical skills and star appeal at the 2004 Democratic Convention, she set out to film his political career in 2006. Rice approached documentary producer Sams, who joined to co-direct and actor Edward Norton’s production company, Class 5, agreed to produce the project. After Norton approached Obama’s team with the idea, the senator agreed to grant the filmmakers what turned out to be unprecedented and exclusive access.

“Initially, it wasn’t even about a presidential campaign; the idea was simply to examine the political experience of a promising young politician of our generation,” says Norton, a two-time Oscar® nominee.

For Rice, the project had an even more personal dimension. She lost her older brother in the Sept. 11 attacks on the Twin Towers – an event that galvanized her political awakening. Then she saw Obama’s 2004 convention speech on TV. Rice recalls, “That’s when the idea of making a political documentary came into my mind.”

Notes Sams, “It was clear that Obama was inspiring people to think differently about politics. We wanted to explore his impact and see where it would take both him and the country.”

From this unique vantage point, By The People captures the boundless fervor of the campaign’s volunteers, as well as the extraordinary skill and technical sophistication of its organizers. “I think people will look back on this campaign as one that was conducted with a real understanding of communication and organizing tools that were singular to that moment,” says Norton. “It was an historic new read on how you could do an end run around conventional political methodology and strategies.”

TWO BLESSINGS + TWO BLESSINGS = HALLELUJAH QUARTET

You should have been there! You should have been there! You should have been there! What more can we say! Our maestro himself, Wayne Ward, along with John T. Wills, brought joy down from above with their singing . . . and the 70 plus souls were enriched beyond measure!

But, first a note of appreciation, that special lady, Donna Boyer, who always sends delicious home-made bread and door prizes for our luncheon in spite of the fact she is unable to attend . . . well, hubby Olin brought her today. Great to see you Donna, and thanks again for the bread!

It was nice to see Lewis Dillon, Jr. with us again; however, he says he is not following in his father’s footsteps . . . he doesn’t know ANY JOKES. What can we say?

And a great big welcome to Bob Haggard, guest of the Burbas (Bob is the father of Clayton Haggard, who is married to Amy Burba, the Burba’s daughter) and also welcome to Richard Wooldridge, guest of Bob Fisher. It was also great to see long-time Eastwoodite, Jimmy Neely!

Now, back to the singing. Just a few of the songs today by Wayne and John T.: “Celebrate Jesus’ Name,” followed by “His Name is Jesus,” then, an old favorite, “My God’s Been So Good.”

By now they are just getting warmed up and our feet are tapping right along . . .  “On the Basis of the Blood,” another favorite, “God is Good All The Time,” and a special song loved by all, “That Name.”

The dynamic duo finished up with three songs of love, “A New Kind of Love,” next, an all time favorite, “Lord, I magnify You,” and finally, “Satisfied.”

Then, the dynamic duo called in reinforcements, Prentiss Wade and Kyle Spencer, who joined for the grand finale singing, “Just A Closer Walk With Thee,” and “Victory in Jesus.” How’s that for a Hallelujah Quartet?

Reluctantly, we let them quit and then it was off to a real Baptist tradition -  the chow line which consisted of: baked ham, fried chicken, taco and also vegetable soup, casseroles a bunch, all kinds of veggies, Baptist eggs, fresh home-grown sliced tomatoes, fruit salads, and desserts.  Oh, my, pies, cakes, brownies, puddings, cobblers, and then more of the same. Calories, get thee behind me!

Russia ‘delivers SAMs to Syria’

MOSCOW, (UPI) — Russia has begun deliveries of Pantsir S1 air-defense missiles to Syria, some of which are expected to be passed on to Iran, Syria’s strategic ally that has largely bankrolled the deal, according to the Interfax-AVN military news agency.

Interfax quoted Yuriy Savenkov, deputy director general of the Instrument Design Bureau, or KBP, as saying that deliveries started several weeks ago. KBP produces the Pantsir and other high-precision weapons.

Meantime, Kommersant quoted Alexei Fedorov, head of Russia’s United Aircraft Corp., as confirming the existence of a 2007 contract with Syria for eight twin-engined MiG-31E interceptors.

This aircraft, NATO codename Foxhound, can fly at three times the speed of sound and engage several targets at a range of up to 110 miles simultaneously.

But Fedorov said that none has been delivered because work on the jet fighters at United Aircraft’s Sokol plant in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod had been suspended because of strenuous objections by Israel against upgrading Syria’s rundown military.

The MiG contract is worth an estimated $400 million to $500 million.

This and other reported contracts have been shrouded in ambiguity and repeated contradictions by Russian sources over the last two years, as an increasingly assertive Moscow, striving to restore its Cold War influence in the Middle East, sparred with the United States.

Russia’s media has reported that contracts were signed, but government officials denied that any existed.

On May 20 Kommersant reported Russia had scrapped plans to sell the MiG-31s to Syria. Four days later, Syria denied there were any problems. But no MiGs have showed up in Syria.

If the Interfax report is correct, the Pantsir shipments were made four years after Damascus signed a contract worth an estimated $730 million with Moscow.

The Syrians were reported to have ordered 36 Pantsir units, which are designed primarily for point defense of key military and industrial facilities as well as air-defense for military units in the field.

Syria’s dire need to upgrade its long-neglected military, supplied almost exclusively by the former Soviet Union during the Cold War, was made evident in September 2007 when Israeli aircraft bombed a suspected nuclear reactor near the Turkish border.

They destroyed the facility without encountering any resistance after blinding Syria’s largely antiquated air-defense system.

No reason was given for why Moscow was only now delivering the units ordered by Syria, but it is likely this resulted from pressure by the United States and Israel on Russia not to strengthen the military capabilities of Syria or Iran.

Israel has threatened to launch pre-emptive strikes against Iran’s nuclear program unless Tehran halts its alleged quest for nuclear weapons.

The Americans have sought a diplomatic dialogue but stress they have not abandoned the military option as a last resort.

Jane’s Defense Weekly, published in London, reported that “a source close to the Syrian contract” said that Iran “would acquire at least 10″ of the Pantsir launch units delivered to Syria.

The source was quoted as saying that this “would part-finance the Syrian acquisition to recompense Damascus for its compliance in the deal.”

Pantsir surface-to-air missiles would enhance Iran’s expanding air-defense system and make any airstrikes against it more costly.

Jane’s noted that when Syria signed the Pantsir contract in 2007, the missiles were to have been equipped with “what at the time was the latest Roman I-Band fire-control radar.”

If Syria had the MiG-31, NATO codename Foxhound, it would have a greater ability to intercept Israeli aircraft en route for Iran, its ally, than it has at the moment.

Damascus is also reported to have ordered a number of MiG-29M/M2 fighters, which have greater range and improved radar than earlier models and can carry a broader array of weapons.

Dear Colleagues, sisters and brothers

This is a slightly belated letter to thank you most heartily on behalf of the Southern African Missiological Society (SAMS) for your participation in the Joint Conference of Academic societies in Religion and Theology at the University of Stellenbosch from 22-26 June 2009. Those who were not able to participate in the conference may want to have a look at the full program of the Joint Conference which is attached to this letter for your convenience. You will find that it is absolutely mammoth.

Barring the cold weather and the serious challenge of being put up in a hostel room and the slight hiccup on the night of the conference dinner when the bus got stuck and perhaps a few other logistical arrangements that could have been done differently, the conference has been an overwhelming experience. For some of us it has indeed been an ecumenical learning experience par excellence. This has been attributable mainly to the presence at the conference of colleagues from Botswana, DRC, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. A very special word of thanks to them. Special reference needs to be made to the presence of Dr Andre Karamaga at the conference. The fact that he sacrificed an important meeting with Evangelisches Missions Werken (EMW) in Hamburg, Germany to come to the Stellenbosch conference, has not gone unnoticed. His keynote address at conference was extremely helpful in understanding some of the theological reflection and strategic thinking that is taking place in the AACC currently.

The drafting of the conference statement is in process, inputs having been received from Dr Tharcisse Gatwa and Dr Dietrich Werner very soon after the conference. Our three Unisa colleagues, Genevieve James, Klippies Kritzinger and Nico Botha are working on the conference statement or action plan which will be out soon. Let us hope that the process set in motion by the action plan, building on what has been achieved previously, will facilitate some strategic advancement of a greater collaboration between diverse stakeholders in theological education and ministerial formation in Africa: between colleagues in theology at different institutions across the continent, between Faculties of theology, seminaries, schools and whoever puts a premium on theological education in Africa.

The Joint Conference has been a great experience particularly because of the very rich crop of papers read. A very special word of thanks goes to all the presenters who have graciously submitted their papers for publication in a special edition of the missiological journal, Missionalia. The Missionalia editor, Dr Genevieve James, has communicated with you on the matter. May I use this opportunity to once again call for the submission of papers to be considered for publication as a special offering to the Edinburgh 2010 study process.

Life at Manaseh had a slow and steady rythm of its own. Unlike the hustle and bustle of Ogden or Salt Lake City, everything there was slow and easy. No one was in a hurry racing to their next appointment or fighting afternoon traffic on the highway. Everyone got where they needed to go in their own time. They lived by the sun rising and setting, not the time on a clock. One of the funniest things in Kenya was the children’s fascination with my watch. I had a cheap velcro watch, which I thought would be useful and wore daily. As the children explored my belongings, they came across my watch attached to my wrist. They had never seen a watch before and had no idea why I would want such a thing. Esther, Rachel, and Prudence spent long hours trying to figure out my watch. They discovered the backlight button, how to make the stopwatch come on, etc. except they never figured out how to change the time. My watch was still on Utah pre-spring forward time, so I had to think alot about what time it actually was in Kenya. I wanted to change the time to Kenya time, but we could never figure it out, no matter how much we played with it.

Each day the children would get ready and go off to school. Damaris took Baby Tyson to school, because the other children didn’t really need it so Stuart and I didn’t have to wake up so early. Stuart stayed up late, and slept in as much as he wanted because there wasn’t anything to really do around the house while the children were away. The children’s chore was to keep the house clean and they did a very good job of it.

Stuart did finally take me to Karen for supplies. We headed down the hill, past the school towards a main road where a few shops made up a Matatu stop called “Sam’s.” We stood by the side of the road waiting for any matatu to come by and pick us up. Stuart and I talked a little, while we waited,  but the weather was getting chilly and made us shiver a bit. After many minutes, a matatu began sputtering its way towards us. the paint was chipping off and the side door which was held open by the wrangler looked like it was about to fall off the van. We both climbed into the van as best we could. Cramming our way around bags of vegetables, riders, and bags. I felt awkward and rude trying to make my way to available seats, but that is what everyone had to do, so nobody felt offended.The matatu began sputtering again as the driver manuevered around several large potholes on the road to Karen.

I have never seen roads that bad before in my life. The road was asphalted, but  it clearly had not been maintained in a very long time. Potholes that could rip off your axis lined the road. The drivers knew the road well, but it was very dangerous when another car was coming because usually the other driver wasn’t on the right side of the road! The threat of head-on collisions was great, but it didn’t seem to happen that often. Karen is about 3, 3.5 miles from where we lived, so it was a short drive. We passed a Christian Missionary School, Military Complex, Up-Scale houses, and many shacks that served as roadside stores. The drive is actually quite pleasant, lined with large, green trees, flowers, and hills.

Matatus were very easy transportation for me to use in Kenya. You just tell the wrangler where you need to go, pay your fee when he collects it and he stops the driver when you are at your stop. They seem to know everything and are willing to help you. We arrived at a circular intersection at a busy shopping center, which was our stop. The matatu pulled over and we all climbed out after figuring out just how discombobulated we all became while riding. Lining the road next to the matatus were sheep, sellers, and police.

Stuart led the way through town, pointing out the large police compound where policemen armed with AK-47s emerged. We crossed the busy road, towards English looking shops and restaurants. The whole area was surrounded by a gate, which was protected by another armed guard. We went to an internet cafe. I had to pay 20 shillings for every minute, which was about $0.05 per minute. That seemed like a fair price, until I realized just how Sloooooowwww the connection was. At that rate I would pay out a fortune just to use the damned internet.

I was finally able to e-mail my Mom. I tried to be perky and upbeat because I was a good, little soldier.

As I was typing, Stuart stared over at me with a bug-eyed look. I didn’t realize it at first, but then it dawned on me that he was staring at just how fast I was typing on the computer. I type fast, but the keys in that cafe stuck horribly and slowed me down, but apparently it was still considerably faster than Stuart’s typing. Since you have to pay by the minute, it is not advisable to take your time on the internet. You can’t do random searches or browse on facebook.com like we are used to. You have to know what you want to do and do it FAST otherwise you could be stuck in the awkward situation of the internet going down while you are browsing.

We then made our way to the Nakumatt, which is the Wal-Mart of Eastern Africa. It is large and unfeeling with lots of merchandise. It would have been better to shop at more local stores to help the economy, but quite frankly they didn’t have what we needed and they were just as expensive as Nakumatt. Stuart was going to follow me around the store, but I didn’t want him to know that I needed sanitary napkins as that can be quite embarassing to any fellow, so I suggested that we each do our shopping and meet at the front. I felt a bit bad because Stuart looked a bit hurt as if I was ditching him, but I knew it would be worse if he had to go down the “Feminine Product” aisle. We went our separate ways while we shopped. I picked up bread, jelly, and nutella, which is a chocolate spread that I remembered from when I lived in Belgium. I had everything I needed to make myself some PBJs whenever I was hungry so my prospects started looking up. I met Stuart at the front of the store and we made our way back to the matatu stop, while Stuart continued to point out stores to me.

That was when I got my first glimpse of the Maasai, who were there at the shopping center selling brightly colored jewelry and accessories. They were bald for the most part and wore elaborate fabrics draped over their tall, dark bodies. I wish I could have gotten a photo of them, but it seemed a bit rude to do so and not buy something from them so I refrained. As we continued on our trek, it was strange to see so many security guards, police, and soldiers around the shopping area. I have never seen that many guns in any one location during my whole life. I knew robbery and theft was common in Kenya, but did they really need a whole arsenal in one intersection? It could have been because of the riots in Western Kenya, it could have been because there were more white people who needed protection or a combination of the three.

We reached the matatu stop and climbed into an empty van, which was headed our way. The matatus always waited until the van was completely full before they would leave, so you could end up waiting for quite awhile. The van was empty for the most part, so Stuart and I grabbed the best seats, which were the first bench of seats right behind the driver. You aren’t quite as squished, it is easier to get out, and you can properly tell the wrangler where you need to go. Stuart and I talked for a little bit, but I was feeling shy again. I don’t remember what we talked about, but Stuart gave me this look, which bordered on quiet understanding and penetrative knowing. That look made me very shy indeed, so I turned my head and fiddled with my bags. I didn’t think I said anything wrong, but he still looked at me like that.

While we talked, the van began filling up with locals, who looked at us as if we were aliens because white people NEVER take matatus since they can afford taxis. After a while,the driver threw down his cigarette, and made a few agile leaps towards the car. Sliding in with the dexterity of a monkey, the driver started the vehicle and drove off. Once we got back to the hill, I realized my first lesson in Kenya: never buy anything that you can’t carry up the hill.

My bags didn’t weigh much, but they were awkward and unevenly balanced. Stuart offered to help me with the bags, but I didn’t want to appear like a sissy who can’t deal with her own stuff, even though I was still weak, so I declined his offer. Yes, I know I know. I am a stubborn fool who won’t relent, but I am not a sissy!

I picked up the kids from school just as before and we followed the natural ebb and flow of life at Manaseh until it was dark. The children began making their dinner, so I went upstairs again. Stuart is hilarious when he eats dinner. He is by no means skinny, nor is he fat, but he eats as much as a bear in spring, while eating it like a marine. He shoveled food into his mouth faster than anything. He always goes back for thirds or fourths if he is really hungry. Damaris and I teased him a little bit, but we understood how hungry he was. I ate as much as I could, but the food is nothing but carbohydrates, so it is a bit difficult at times. Potatoes, meat, stewed vegetables, and tea made up our dinners at Manaseh. There was very little variation because fruit was rare and bread was meant for the children. The meals became very boring very fast. Beatrice and Pastor Joseph went to bed early, while Damaris, Stuart, and I stayed up chatting.

We chatted about various things to entertain ourselves and somehow the conversation turned to the Presidential Election with Obama. Damaris began asking all sorts of questions about Obama, which I couldn’t answer because I truly do not care about elections between Republicans and Democrats (I am a Libertarian so I think we are equally screwed whether a republican or democrat is in office). Kenyans for some reason think that Obama IS KENYAN simply because his louzy, sleezebag father was Kenyan. They were extremely proud that a son of Africa could win the Presidency in the most powerful nation in the world. It didn’t seem to matter to them that he is actually half white and american, not Kenyan, because they had so much hope invested in him. I suppose it was because every African leader has been a dictator, or corrupt, or weak, so they looked to Obama to be the leader they always dreamed of. It was rather a sad thing to see, because instead of trying to raise and elect a political leader similar to Obama to rule their countries they looked to Obama to fix their problems.

I answered the questions as best as I could, but I really didn’t know or care about the election (I know that will be upseting to some of you, but it is true). We continued talking, but it was mostly Stuart and Damaris talking between themselves.  I tried to stay up as late as I could, but I became drowsy and tired around 11pm so i went to bed, while Stuart and Damaris continued to stay up much later. Another cultural note: Utahns kind of stick to a 10pm-6am sleep schedule, we don’t stay up late or sleep in till noon. I know quite a shocker, but we like it.

I am so tired I could gag.

Apparently, today is day one in the great war between me and soda.  When I woke up this morning, I had no clue how much my day would revolve around soda.  On the way to work, I placed a soda between my legs, at my crotch so I could open it while I drove.  And because my crotch is awesome at gripping and opening things.  Anyway, suddenly the soda started foaming everywhere and spilled all over my crotch. The only store between me and work, that’s open at the ungodly hour I am driving to work, is Wal*Mart.  This store only had one pair of dress khakis that didn’t have an elastic waste or look like “mom jeans.”  That one pair, happened to be a size too small.  After I waddled through Wal*mart with my shirt pulled down below my pee stained looking pants I ran to the bathroom (insert gagging here b/c the walmart bathrooms are f’n disgusting) and changed.  Only, I couldn’t button the top of the pants w/o them digging into me, so I just folded them down (under my gut). I’m pretty sure someone could have easily snapped a photo of me for that website about the people of walmart.

I finally get to work, and find my office covered in black streamers, balloons, confetti, and posters about being thirty.  All the birthday stuff at work was fun.

Around 3 my boss asked me and Jessica to go to the store to buy sodas for the vending machine.  Ugh.  Boo.  Fine.  It’s a free excuse to get out of the office.  Only, since he couldn’t go with us, we had to go to Wal*mart.  When we got there he sent an email saying he needed:

Holy Fudge who needs that much soda!  We begin to do our best impression of the contestants on Shop til You Drop.  We get half way down the list and are all sweaty and out of breath and a little dizzy.  I’m all, f’ this sh!t.  Why can’t we just go to Sam’s and get pallets of soda? Jessica said it was b/c we did have a membership to Sam’s and couldn’t get in without our Boss.  Fine.  Then a polite stranger said we should just do the whole free membership for a day thing or get added on to someone else’s (she even offered to add us to hers).  Anyway, I called LC’s Mama and she added me to hers.  After we looked around to make sure no employees were there, we abandoned our overflowing carts and booked it to the door.

We finally get to Sam’s.  This whole time, I’m wearing heels.  Because they are cute, that’s why.  My feet are throbbing and the skin feels like it’s being grated off.  I’m all limping around Sam’s trying to find some flip flops but apparently the Sam’s demographic have giant feet so Sam’s only sold flip flop in sizes 9 and 10.  Fine.  I limp all over Sams trying to find soda.  We filled up an ENTIRE PALLET TRUCK of soda.  However, I still have to stop by Walmart and get more b/c Sam’s doesn’t carry Yoohoo or Root Beer in cans.  Screw it.  That can wait until Friday.

Soda has cost me $243 and my left pinky-toe. AND I’m tired from all the running around and lifting sodas. Sodas go on the pallet truck, then the back of the pick-up truck, and then off the pick-up truck into the warehouse.  Dude, isn’t there a guy here that can do all this lifting shit?

I’m too old for this crap.  We’ve established that by plastering it everywhere in my office. I don’t know who’s bright idea it was to throw confetti all over the floor, but the cleaning crew now hates them.  That stuff got tracked ALL over the building.

I tried to tell Jessica that we should just buy water and V8 (Sam’s has those) b/c the people we work with are so fat they don’t need chocolate milk or root beer and we’d be doing them a favor.
