Samsonite suitcases are among the top selling cases in the United States. And it’s small wonde

Samsonite suitcases are among the top selling cases in the United States. And it’s small wonder these bags are also among the highest rated in the U.S.. They offer ever sort of suitcase imaginable, from soft cases to hard cases, wheeled suitcases to garment bags. Samsonite comes in tiny, medium or massive sizes, small being the carryon size. They even provide a PC bag.

Samsonite suitcases are available in two kinds of wheeled varieties. There’s the normal two wheeled variety and then four wheeled’spinner’. The 2 wheeled cases come in many different models. You will find them in soft or hard covered. Hard or soft covered each of these cases comes with a handle for easy portability. Some of the modes’ handles adjust to give taller travelers more comfort when pulling the suitcase along. Other features that are available with certain suitcases are reusable washing bags, and toiletry bag.

The four wheeled spinner is available too in soft cover, hard cover or a combination of the 2. The spinner comes with many of the same features as the 2 wheeled versions. The downside to having the four wheels to the two wheels is they have an inclination to be a little heavier. This might be a controversy should airlines charge for the weight of your bags.

Also offered by Samsonite cases are garment bags. Samsonite garment bags are available in either the 4 wheeled spinner type or the traditional over the shoulder style. Lots of the over the shoulder type garment bags fold not in half but in thirds to make it more compact. Many of them also supply a spot for you to store your PC to save having to hold an additional bag.

A last kind of Samsonite case is the boarding bag. These small bags are expediently sized so you can carry it on the plane. This is a good place to store stuff like your toiletries, books, electronics that you do not need to be checked. Items such as hand held game systems, mp3 players and cameras.

Samsonite cases are not the least expensive cases in the world but their design and development of these cases are considered worth the cost. You can get them cheaper if you by them as a set versus purchasing each bag individually. There are some sites that sell them for a bit less than you would spend thru the Samsonite web site. If you’re wanting suitcases, Samsonite should be on your list to test out.

If you want to get your very own Samsonite case, perhaps at a price better than you believed, please visit our Samsonite suitcase store.

I begin todays posting by asking myself, what is the social etiquette when one is on a train, or met

I begin todays posting by asking myself, what is the social etiquette when one is on a train, or metro or any form of public transport? It’s a topic I have asked myself and many others, it is also a question I have asked many people over years. Many many friends have received early morning texts with exclamations at the behaviours of those around me on public transport. (Sorry to all)
This does not limit itself to one country either, although I didn’t expect weird behaviour on the metro to stop when I move country, I possibly did expect to see a different class of behaviour. Now I can’t really explain why I thought that but there it is.
Two examples spring to mind as I sit on this train to work. One yesterday, a 30-something lady was quietly reading her book when a boy sits next to her and had quite loud music playing. Both minding their own business (obviously I wasn’t) when the woman says to the boy “Please can you turn your music down, it’s very loud?” He replied “no” and looked a little triumphant and defiant at the same time. The lady responded “it’s very loud that I can hear it” The boy looked smugly on while his mates who are standing are all sniggering by the door. The lady then proceeds to take his headphones off one ear. He looks absolutely livid when she says “look, look how loud it is” The boy looked mad and you could see in his eyes – he wanted to lash out in some way, but he didn’t say anything and got off at the next stop with his friends.
What is the social protocol here? Should she have taken the headphones off the boy? Should she have given him the name of a good ear doctor? Should he have respected her request? It’s a very odd scenario and the boy looked no older than 15. It just made me think about the way you behave on public transport.
The second example has just happened when I began writing this piece. The train conductor has come to check our tickets and the guy next to me is picking his nose with some fervour! The conductor and I just looked at this guy giving him a strange look. Should you pick your nose in public? That’s not a question limited to public transport only.
What should you do on public transport? Talk loudly, read, listen to music or clean facial orifices where possible? This morning on the metro, a guy sat in a seat in front of me with a cotton bud and proceeded to clean his ears look at it every once in awhile to make sure he had everything! GROSS! WHAT ON EARTH? WHY?? Is the public transport an extension of your lounge? I think not!
On the other hand, I do make mistakes myself and I understand that I am not blameless. I am that person on the train that sometimes has 3 – 4 bags with her on the train and is struggling to handle everything (its not my fault, laptop bag, handbag, lunch bag and gym bag – now looking at that list, I should probably buy myself a Samsonite!). I am also that person that occasionally puts her feet up on the metro or the trains if I’m working or if it’s an empty carriage and have been told off once or twice – I did listen!
Close friends will say that I should stop complaining and learn to drive. I suppose they have a point, maybe I should get a move on with that…..

Monday, September 14: Since Mercury’s retrograde, I was determined to give myself enough time to get

Monday, September 14:

Since Mercury’s retrograde, I was determined to give myself enough time to get to the airport with obstacles. I ate a huge pasta lunch to fortify myself (because I am an army that moves on my stomach).

My mom drove me across the street to the train station with my luggage (since it’s uphill). I caught the 1:19 train, which was only three minutes late — a record for Metro North. No problem getting the seat in the front with the little indent for my suitcase, the backpack sitting on top of it. All good.

The train ride was exceptionally smooth. That should have been my first clue that something was going to go wrong down the line! The train even came in on an upper platform. I’m convinced that, whenever they see I have luggage, they radio ahead to say, “Make sure you put us as far away on the lower level as possible — she’s got baggage!” But we came in on an upper track.

The Samsonite bag rolls so smoothly that I kept looking back, thinking maybe the handle had come off in my hand and I didn’t have a suitcase with me.

Got across Grand Central, wandered across the street to the airport bus. Bought a round trip ticket. The bus came a few minutes later, I was loaded on, and off we went.

Costume Imp texted me that he was in the car on his way to the airport.

It wasn’t bad until we got onto Long Island. For some reason, there were cops EVERYWHERE and it was a parking lot. I wondered if there was some horrible accident, but we kept inching forward.

Costume Imp arrived at the airport and checked in. I was getting a bit tense.

In actuality, it didn’t take all that much longer than usual to get from the city to JFK — maybe an additional 15 minutes. But I had visions of not making the flight, in spite of leaving early.

I got there, Imp was waiting for me, and check-in was a breeze. I didn’t have to wait at all. Got the boarding pass, we went through security, and headed for our gate. We bought overpriced water and really bad coffee. I bought a couple of Godiva bars, in case British Air decided to act like a US carrier and not feed us.

We sat in our lounge. My iPod Touch wouldn’t connect to anything, which was frustrating, since I’d been promised everything would now work properly.

We also noticed that there were an awful lot of extra SWAT-types walking around, Feds, and various other guards. They walked through each lounge, making eye contact with every individual. In other words, they were looking for someone specific. But we didn’t know who or why. It was a little disconcerting. I was relieved that they were on top of it, but you could tell they were stressed.

We later learned that a terrorist plot aimed at New York had been thwarted, with several figures arrested, a key figure arrested in Denver, who was shipped back to New York for prosecution. Several raids had happened in Queens, which was why there were so many cops on every overpass, and traffic crawled. Again, disconcerting, but glad that they were on top of it and tragedy was averted.

And, when we got on the plane, there were extra police checking out each individual as they entered the ramp and then again, at the bottom of the ramp, just before we entered the plane.

We got settled in our seats. I had the aisle, Imp was in the middle, and there was a very nice young woman in the window seat, on her way to study for a semester in London. The seats on BA were much more comfortable than on United or American. They also gave us pillows and blankets, and little kits with headset, socks, eye mask, and toothbrush. I felt very pampered, after the US carriers who act like they’re doing you a favor by letting you on the plane in the first place. Imp still didn’t think they were as good as Virgin, but, never having flown Virgin, I couldn’t make the comparison.

We took off only a little late, settled into the air just fine. They served drinks — I had a rather mediocre red wine from California. Dinner was okay — some tortellini, with more mediocre wine and some of the worst coffee I’ve ever had in my life. We weren’t really in the mood to read, so we chatted.

Later, Imp tried to nap. I started Italo Calvino’s IF ON A WINTER’S NIGHT A TRAVELER, which is great, but I wasn’t in the mood to read. I wasn’t in the mood to watch a movie. I listened to some quiet music and tried to rest.

The descent into Heathrow was bad for my ears. Really painful, in spite of the precautions taken.

And then, we were regurgitated into the infamous Terminal 5, the new international terminal that’s supposedly so brilliant.

I loathed it.

I felt like a gerbil in a Habitrail.

We walked through glass-enclosed corridors up and down various levels (Habitrail), went through security and went through the terminal. We didn’t have a lot of time to make our connection. I wanted to get a British newspaper, but there was only one WH Smith close to where we disembarked, and nothing close to our next gate. I got progressively crankier as other people showed up in the lounge with newspapers! We did get some decent coffee, so I somewhat revived.

Our departure gate was A-10, which is another Habitrail maze they put you through before loading you on busses and driving you far out onto the tarmac before loading you onto the next plane.

I took the middle seat this time, giving Imp the aisle. These seats were larger and more comfortable than on the overseas leg. We got into the air reasonably on time. Unfortunately, the entire flight was just at the altitude that causes my ears the most pain, so the hour and change was agony. They fed us a fake English muffin (cold) with some sort of fake salmon spread on it and more bad coffee.

But we touched down in Prague on time. The first thing I saw made me froth at the mouth –all of the runways to the planes are plastered with Citibank logos. Now, we bailed them out with millions of dollars of TARP money so they could paint their logo over the Prague Airport? Needless to say, a letter to the TARP overseer is going out.

Security wasn’t a problem, and there we were. Mid-morning in Prague, up for nearly 24 hours.

I’d assumed we had vouchers to get to the hotel, but we didn’t; it wasn’t part of our package. I later found out hotels in Prague don’t do that. Taxis screw you and the airport shuttles aren’t much better. Fortunately, I had downloaded directions from the hotel’s website. We found an ATM for Imp to withdraw money (I had my first 4 days’ budget already in Czk).

We had to take a bus and then a metro. The ticket machines only had coins and we only had bills, so I left Imp outside with the luggage, smoking, and I went back in to get change. I found a transportation desk, and asked for the ticket that allows us to transfer. He shook his head and said we were going too far out to risk it — the ticket is only good for 75 minutes and one transfer. Praha 10 is far away, and we should purchase a day pass. I said I’d risk it. He also said we had to pay child’s fare for our suitcases. That’s not in any of the guidebooks, but since I know the fine is 900 czk if you don’t have the right tickets, I bought them. I later found out that it wasn’t a scam, that’s actually true.

I gave Imp his ticket and his suitcase’s ticket, and the 119 bus rolled up shortly thereafter. When you enter the bus or the tram or as you enter the metro station, you stamp your ticket. It gives the date and time. The inspectors can ask to see your tickets at any time and then fine you if you don’t have them or if they’re expired.

We got on the bus, punched our tickets, and got our first views of Prague. Out by the airport are still the beige concrete walls with barbed wire and then the block houses built under Communism. It reminded me a lot of East Germany in the 1970s and just after Reunification in the early 90s. Lots of busses, lots of streetcars, so public transport is the way to go.

It was about a 35 minute ride to Dejvickå, the first stop on the Metro line we needed, and the last stop for the 119 bus. We got off, rolled out suitcases into the station. Since it was the starting/ending stop of the line, we didn’t have to worry about direction. We knew our stop was 11 stops in, and the stop before it was a long stop starting with a “Z” — which we nicknamed “The Z stop” for the duration of our stay.

The metros are great. They run underground, are clean, fast, easy to navigate. One has to push the button to open the doors — they don’t open automatically. The metro was crowded, but a very nice woman sat opposite us. She reminded me of my mom’s best friend. She told us what phrase was used to mean the doors were closing (there’s no way I can spell it, so I won’t put it here). She loved Scotland, especially Glasgow, and was a big fan of Charles Rennie Macintosh. In fact, she was on her way to borrow a book about him from the library.

We got off at our stop (only 20 minutes from our starting point, well within our ticket time) and headed in the direction indicated by the hotel map. We saw “Billa”, the grocery store which was mentioned in hotel reviews, and headed in that direction. It was definitely a residential neighborhood, with blocks of flats on both sides of a wide boulevard. We headed towards a street called “Solidarity” — mostly because it was something we could pronounce. We saw a large building sticking up, and when we turned the corner, there was the Hotel Juno, which was to be our base for the coming week.

Our own story starts in Dubai – the overnight stop between our Mauritius honeymoon and London

Our own story starts in Dubai – the overnight stop between our Mauritius honeymoon and London Heathrow.

Both pieces of our luggage were destroyed by Emirates, including an ‘indestructible’ Samsonite case, which was broken so badly that many of the items within were also broken or had fallen out. We were offered replacements (each worth a fraction of the replacement value), but had to fight to keep our damaged luggage.

On leaving Dubai with all four cases, the ground staff were mostly polite, except, sadly, the supervisor, who refused to be of any help, insisting that we should pay around £300 for going overweight (the weight only of the new cases, of course). We had to leave one of the cases behind.

Speaking to baggage crews at Heathrow, it seems that Dubai is well known for wrecking luggage and is not subject to the same camera surveillance of most international airports.

Three months later and there is still no sign of our bags, compensation or even any correspondence from Emirates, despite continued attempts to contact the airline. And we’re still around £800 out of pocket.

But, we’re not alone!

Here’s a song, posted on YouTube about a similar incident involving United Airlines and a guitar worth $3,500. This video became an overnight hit and United’s share price fell by 15% almost instantly.

No longer in college (for two years; not to mention I am pretty settled here in Brooklyn) there has been no need for humungous luggage prepared to take a beating for the 3000 mile trip every three to four months between BDL and SFO or Oakland Airport, so I have been gradually replacing all my luggage with new pieces, starting off with some London Fog Oxford Collection luggage (Thank You Century 21 for making it affordable!) which evoke a greater time of traveling. Being that those pieces are kind of new, I would like to round out my collection with some older pieces (you know I like old things: typewriters and rotary phones and all that). Below are some pieces I would like to add because there is nothing like fashionable luggage for those short weekend trips off the Metro North, LIRR, or Amtrak.

I purchased this Samsonite garment bag at Kohl’s. It has a retail price of $399 and is from their new “Drive” Collection, which is one of the higher end lines. There were 2 other garment bags for less, one at $299 and another at $329.

I chose this model because it looked slightly more professional and had 4 wheels (not 2). It also boasts the ability to stand on its own so you can hang clothes as you pack.

Recommend or not? Definitely NO. After a single trip, the bag has 3 tears (about 1/2″) and many areas of worn fabric. The material is incredibly cheap and thin, and just by rubbing your fingernail across the material 3-5 times you can see the fabric wearing away. I checked the bag, but I’ve flown for years with my previous garment bag (made by the cheaper Atlantic) and it has never looked like this.

The worst part – I contacted Samsonite who rudely told me it’s probably normal wear and tear, but if I wanted to take it to an authorized repair location, they would consider repairing it. If you’ve looked online, you know that Samsonite is notorious for denying any repairs. And, you’re stuck paying the repair location for the inspection. No joke.

As if paying $400 for a bag wasn’t enough, they want me to pay a ridiculous amount to ship it to the nearest repair location (about 3 hours from me) or drive it there myself, only to pay about $75 (based on online postings) to be told it’s not covered.

Shame on Samsonite. If you want a new garment bag, skip the Samsonite name and go with a less expensive bag that will not only save you money, but doesn’t tear just by scratching it with your fingernail and is also covered by a company that will put their name behind their products.

I just got back from a super quick trip to Queens/Long Island. I hung with Fun Bobby, the Ex mostly, but also Samsonite, and the Swan.

Highlights – White Castle, seeing Carter the Dog, Chipolte, the cheapest bar food ever and Hot Bagels.

Lowlights – The flight home which consisted of going from JFK to LaGuardia, having my flight delayed then being rerouted to Myrtle Beach because the Charleston airport closed at midnight and refused to stay open. I had to share a cab-van with four other people for the two hour ride back to Charleston.

The focal point of the visit was the dmb concert to celebrate the Ex’s birthday. It took place at Jones Beach, which gave us a chance to lay on the beach for a few hours prior to tailgating.

Tailgating was a lot of fun. We bought some food, had some beers, and just enjoyed our surroundings.

The venue itself was awesome. It’s completely open-air and the stage is surrounded by water. See it here.

The show was awesome (as always). Everyone seemed to have a great time.

Show highlights:

1. I’ve seen three shows this year and all three have started with PNP —> Rapunzel. Weird.

2. Super Old School run with One Sweet World and then Seek Up

3. New ending to Alligator Pie

4. JIMI THING rocked. The crowd sang the first two verses before Dave finally joined back in. It’s an incredible moment when this happens. You hear thousands of people singing together while the band just plays.

4a. Dave did a little scat towards the end which was entertaining. Not to mention his crazy ass dance he did.

4b. Dave/Carter/Rashawn/Boyd busted out the Sexy MF outro (Prince song) which the crowd loved

4c. Jeff played two saxophones…at once! Rashawn was killin it too.

5. TWO STEP WAS HEAVEN. Carter had a long solo which rivaled the one I saw in Fenway. Timmy ripped it up just before Carter melted our faces. Just when I didn’t think it could get any better the band did a new closing which wrapped it up. Incredible end to the inital set. Fun Bobby’s mouth hit the floor and she cried a little. I said “Holy Shit. Wow. Holy Crap,” about five times after it ended.

6. It was definitely the Boyd show. Lots of solos and he got the crowd moving as usual.

7. I heard four songs live that I had never heard live before

In the 90’s, roller backpacks became popular among students in both high school and college, because they were an easier way to lug around those 10-ton books that were requirements for all 5 classes. Hence, lessening back and shoulder strain, especially for those who did the one-shoulder sling because it was “uncool” to wear both straps!

Now, in the middle of a recession, Samsonite is happy to present:

Gata!

A treia oară, m-a controlat un băiat, de vreo 2 m, cui n-am avut ce-i drept curajul să-i zic ceva.

via

Uh oh, I’m going to start blogging. It’s all that free time I have. You know, two jobs, 60 or so hours a week, as I’m starting a new relationship, right when I’m moving out of one place and into another, and two weeks before a cross-Atlantic trip. Because, really, I’ve totally got all that under control and what better things do I have to do?

So let’s start off with what we’re most excited about right now: the upcoming trip to Morocco! The souks of Marrakesh, the beaches of Agadir…and of course Vogue Italia knew all about my travel plans and ran this spread for their May 2009 issue. I’m going to pass on Sasha’s massive hair, but I say yes yes yes to low-slung and slouchy, to draped neutrals, and to the pop of orange.

And it wouldn’t be a trip worth taking if I didn’t buy new luggage for the occasion. Was it providence that I found this Alexander McQueen for Samsonite Black Label black croco carry-on at TJ Maxx for $130…when it retails for $775?! The answer is yes. And because that thing is barely going to fit half my shoes, I’m taking along the classic Longchamp Le Pliage large tote in Mandarin.

via

As important as the luggage? The outfit for the plane. Another fabulous Teej find were these cropped pleated pants from Vince. They look great with everything and quietly echo the season’s harem trend without making one look like…well…like one just walked out of the harem.

Tires: The Schwalbe Big Apples were nice and comfortable. Unfortunately, removal required deflatin

Tires:

The Schwalbe Big Apples were nice and comfortable. Unfortunately, removal required deflating the tires because the tires are so wide (2”). I can across some “Greenspeed Scorcher” tires on the internet that should allow the wheel to be removed easier. They are slicks and supposed to have a little less rolling resistance than the Primo Comet, which seems to have some of the lowest rolling resistance according to the chart on this website: www.HPVA.com . The chart shows that rolling resistance should be about half(!) that of the Schwalbe Big Apples.

I was blown away at the difference in speed that could be achieved. Based on the GPS, about a 4 mpg average increase was the result. The ride quality was excellent. It is slightly more bumpy than the Big Apples, but not at all annoying at all. You still feel big bumps, like any rigid frame bike, so I feel nothing was lost and plenty gained.

Toe Clips:

Another item that I didn’t realize would offer a nice gain, about 2 mph. The LBS had a Chinese knockoff set for $10.00 that was added to the existing pedals.

Packing the Swift Folder:

The Swift Folder could be packed in about 40 minutes into a 31” Samsonite F’Lite case. So far, to disassemble the bike, the frame needs to be disassembled at the pivot point. More information will be posted when this packing technique gets refined.
