Kicking and Screaming
Midwestcoastal: Life in 24FPS

Noah Baumbach’s 1995 film Kicking and Screaming deals with a group of twenty-somethings who experience post-graduation ennui and feel directionless. This entry is not about that movie, though some of the sentiments are shared here. This is a personal post, though not so private that I don’t feel comfortable sharing. It is not exactly a happy post, either, though I hope it does not come off as too whiny. It simply is where I am in life right now. And the state of my life can be summed up in one word: precarious. Well, it’s precarious first and foremost; directionless comes right after that. As I mentioned in my very first entry, I moved to San Francisco after graduating college for law school. Michigan felt stifling and wasn’t having the best job market, and I was feeling adventurous. I had gotten accepted at a school in the city, and I was feeling adventurous, so I took the opportunity. Unfortunately, law school did not work out well.  I passed all my classes my 1L (first) year, but my

Test (2013) Film Trailer
P.H.Davies

Set in San Francisco in 1985, Test is a new film about two gay men in a romantic relationship in the early days of the AIDS epidemic. Frankie and Todd are ballet dancers living with the spectre of the disease in the oppressive, anti-gay atmosphere of Reagan’s administration in the 1980′s. While their love blossoms, so does the fear that they might be infected and the narrative moves towards whether or not they should be tested. Test is writer and director, Chris Mason Johnson’s, first feature film and will premiere at the Seattle Film Festival. Official Website for Test Trailer Clip

I’m Moving!
Brandon's Blog

I have some great news for you guys! I’m moving…back! Long story short: I moved from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania out to Sacramento, California and now I’m moving BACK to Pittsburgh.  The main reason (for me) that I’m moving back is that I feel that it’s in my best interests, economically. I gave California a shot, but it’s not for me. And I’m not gonna lie; it’s expensive to live out here. It’s no longer financially possible for me to live out here and that’s OK. It’s OK because while I was living here, I made amazing new friends; friends who I’ll know for a lifetime. And I’ll definitely come out to visit again in the future.  But I honestly miss what I had back in Pittsburgh. I miss it to much. I can’t stand it any longer. I want to start my life again there, where I grew up. I want to rekindle my old friendships and reconnect with what I previously had over there.  I feel that living out here in Californ

I commute to Sausalito everyday to work. It takes me about 1.5hours one way. Here are people I do not wish to be on the bus. A little guide to what to expect when you take the bus in San Francisco. The Singer- The person who is very passionate about their music and wants to share it with the entire bus. Most of the time, they will just ruin your ears or make you turn up your music 10 times louder. The Singer + Dancer- Number one but this person will be so into their music they start to dance on the metal poles. Crazy people… Last Night- People who talk about their amazing party last night and how drunk they or everyone got. Drug Boasters- People who boast about this specific drug and how much they did and are about to do. Weed- People who smell like weed. Some people may like the smell, but I do not enjoy it at all. If you’re riding the bus in San Francisco, bring headphones to drown out other people’s conversations. Some conversations may drop your IQ if you listen t

FOOD.

fried asparagus with harissa aoili. grilled bread, crescenza, and snow peas. flatbread of spicy fennel, sausage, potatoes, basil, mozzarella. wood roasted king salmon, lentils, bacon, snow peas and radish. baked cauliflower, green garlic cream, gruyère and pimenton. poached duck egg, grilled asparagus, horseradish crème fraîche and sherry onions. grilled pork chop, arrowhead cabbage, carrots, grilled apricots and mustard. grass fed hamburger with gruyère and avocado, pickled onions and french fries with herbed aioli. – Good food with good friends has got to be one of my favorite activities this life on earth has to offer. Nopa’s food was simple and fresh, an inspiring home-cooked meal. With the right high quality ingredients, I felt like I could re-create some of these dishes in my own kitchen. If only I had connections with a farm to bring to my table.

Third time is a charm. (San Francisco, Art School, Fog)
La même lune.

Hello! It’s been a while–I KNOW. And I truly sorry, but this year has been a little bit crazy for me. I am not trying to just give you guys excuses, so I’ll just write about all that has happened in the past months. Last time I posted (before the Jeff Goins post) was about Greece. I do intent to finish that post but I feel like this is more urgent. Around July last year, I moved from my city in Brazil (Curitiba-PR) to come study Advertising at a school called Academy of Art University, in the city of San Francisco, in California. I live in a small town about 15-20 min from SF, in Pacifica. I have previously written about how I was an exchange student here and all. I love California. I love this place, everything about it. San Francisco is such an amazing city, it never ceases to amaze me. Every time I am there (which is every day, haha) I feel so lucky, so ”blessed.” And Pacifica is great, as well. Absolutely different, but it has its advantages. While San

In the year and a half that I’ve lived in San Francisco, I hadn’t gone anywhere because of several reasons….life, career, laziness, family obligations, etc. The only parts of SF I’ve been to since I’ve been here are the outer lying residential areas and the Financial District because I’ve worked there, and of course Union Square. This year, I finally went to a live professional sports game (yes, the GIANTS @ ATT Park) and it was SUPER FUN! It’s funny because I was expecting like, hot dogs and corndogs but the food there is quite fancy. There were rotisserie chicken along w/ pasta dishes and gourmet Mexican tacos. I was impressed I can’t wait until the next game I’m going to (In June, oh yeah baby!) Anyway….tonight, I finally made it out to another hot spot in San Francisco that I hadn’t been to in a LONG time…if I’m not mistaken, about 7 years….behold, one of the awesomest places ever: Yes, Pier 39 in S

Does San Francisco Suck? They Hate The Smell Of Bacon, So You Tell Us
93.1 Jack FM

How dare you San Francisco. HOW DARE YOU. The forward-thinking, possibly greatest restaurant in existence, Bacon Bacon, is closing its doors. Why? Because residents surrounding the establishment complained about the smell. You read that right, they actually complained about the aroma of sweet, sweet bacon wafting through the air. Who does that? Just so we’re clear, Bacon Bacon is a restaurant that specializes in bacon recipes, primarily sandwiches. Heck, they even have a sandwich called “The Almost Veggie Breakfast Sandwich.” This restaurant may represent the ultimate in human dining. So of course, San Francisco being San Francisco, they had to go ruin it. Since its opening, residents have complained about the “porcine aroma and grease disposal.” The Department of Public Health has given the new owners of Bacon Bacon several months to comply, but reportedly the owners have failed address issues, according to the San Francisco Examiner. There’s also something about not having the right

I want to start by saying that I am feeling AMAZINGLY inspired today after a terrific night out to the best concert I have been to yet to date. My Chef and I had the pleasure of going to see Big Boi/Sir Lucious Leftfoot ( Big Boi as in http://www.outkast.com Ya’LL!) in a relatively intimate setting at the Mezzanine in San Francisco. http://www.bigboi.com I feel so inspired that I just haven’t been to such an awesome music experience where I heard older Outkast songs such as Ms Jackson, B.O.B. etc as well as all his new solo album work. It was an amazing experience know virtually every song that was played – some songs that I was literally in awe that he was actually playing.. http://killermike.com was the pre show = awesome sauce as well. So I just wanted to give a premise on why I felt inspired to write about music today and how it has enhanced my life. One of my biggest passions throughout life that over the years I’ve had to scale back upon is in music simply
