San Francisco in 1951 As Seen Through the Periscope of a U.S. Navy Submarine
Hey Sweetheart, Get Me Rewrite!

Golden Gate Bridge These photos of San Francisco were taken through the periscope of the U.S. Navy submarine U.S.S. Catfish back in 1951. The photos depict the Golden Gate Bridge, northern stretches of San Francisco, and Alcatraz, all through the somewhat disconcerting crosshairs of the periscope. Originally published in a San Francisco Chronicle article in January, 1951, the photos were republished this week on the SFGate blog, The Big Event. Went back into the archives for this week’s post.  Below is a portion of a large mural in an alley behind the City Lights Bookshop in San Francisco, honoring the Zapatista rebels of the Chiapas region of Mexico.  (Click on the photo for a larger version.) See the ‘Other Week 4 Photos’ for more color from San Francisco, Maine, and Cuttyhunk, Massachusetts! (And the obligatory self-portrait.)

Warehouse or Restaurant??? Serpentine
Dabble With..

Erin Rooney started her restaurant businesses with Slow Club in 1991 in Potrero Hill. In December of 2007 Rooney added Serpentine to her collection. With the recession setting in soon after Serpentine opened Rooney decided upon keeping everything concise, so the staff is few extensively trained people and the menu is limited but packed with exceptional dishes (20 dishes max both small and large). Eric Held help Serpentine maintains its original space which was a boiler room for a 100-year-old can factory with an industrial interior design. Eric Held did so with exposed brick walls, a stained and mottled concrete ceiling 20 feet high, and large warehouse-style paned windows, painted black. Rooney chose the name Serpentine because it is the California State Rock and it was a jagged specimen of which she found under the floorboards during construction. Serpentine is known as one of Dogpatch’s must try stops, they serve new American Cuisine for weekend brunch, weekday lunch, dinner (

With my friends. Drinking coffee with my friends. Debating the newest Daft Punk album with my friends, one good jam, and let us all cross our fingers that someone remixes the shit out of the rest of it. Shit talking with my friends. Eating spicy jerk tofu salad with my friends. Eating french fries with my friends and looking out over the ocean from Louis’. Drinking more coffee with my friends. To the point that I handed off the last cup I had gotten half drunk to a friend. “Here, you want some,” I said handing it off, “I can’t take in any more.” Which is unusual for me, but I could feel the jittery tiredness begin to overtake my body, which means I had gone too far down the route of the highway of caffeine. “It’s cold filtered coffee concentrate, you will want to mix it with milk,” the barista said. Oh. Yeah, how about some soy milk with that. Ok. And yes, that was concentrated. Indeedy. Yes, pardon me while I deconstruct that album

California Day 5: Painted Ladies & Arrival in Los Angeles
Hopefully not lost...

Today was our last day in San Francisco. Since our plane to LA left in the afternoon, we spent the morning exploring some of the shops on Fillmore and also visiting the Painted Ladies near Alamo Square. Alamo Square was on top of a hill. There was a nice view, even though there was some major construction happening on one of the houses.  The famous Painted Ladies. We called a cab to get to SFO Airport and arrived fairly early in order to make it past security on time. Luckily, security wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and we were at our gate almost an hour before our boarding time. Found a seat right beside the counter so we could hear all the announcements. Our plane to LAX! The plane ride was shorter than expected, but our take off was delayed for almost half an hour because of all the air traffic. We arrived without a problem in LA and headed for our hotel which is near Hollywood Blvd. Some cool looking palm trees that we don’t have in Toronto. After dropping off o

The New Up's Official Blog

Memorial Day weekend.   For many of us, three days off in a row is a perfect excuse to hit the road and GO somewhere.   Escaping the busy complexities of life for a brief, yet needed break from the day to day insanity. Its Hawk here, writing my first blog ever and life in my shoes really has been insane recently.  I’m heading out of town to do a little camping / kiyaking trip up to the Russian River and really looking forward to just kicking it with nature and getting out of the city.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate, but thats always a roll of the dice. Luckily my insanity is not all bad,  collectively my circles of people have been getting some serious sh*t done!  The New Up’s Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign is chugging along on all cylinders (check it out here: http://igg.me/at/thenewup/x/3150441f ), the new album is ready to go, and we just played an incredibly cool outdoor show last weekend.   Also I have to give a big shout out to Blue Bear School of Music, who j

SPERMIEEEE!
HER bun. MY oven

Hello thereee!! So the appointment today went GREAT.Domonique’s estrogen level right now is 995. & she has 13 follicles that are looking RIGHT.We have another appointment scheduled for Sunday. They will tell us for SURE when the egg retrieval will be.More than likely it will end up being this Tuesday. Eek eek!! I know she’s super nervous. Our clinic doesn’t use anesthesia. So she will be under conscious sedation.Which is a little scary for her because she’s worried she will feel the pain.Which I really don’t think she will, but I would be nervous Nancy too if I were her!I’m sure everything will go fine though. So far our clinic has been PERFECT!Until today. -_-We’ve been asking for LITERALLY a month about when we should have the sperm shipped. Our sperm clinic offers two day or overnight shipping. But because there’s a SIGNIFICANT difference in price of course we wanted to know ahead of time so we could use the two day shipping. But our nu
