Venice is one of the world’s biggest tourist destinations, so it doesn’t need much selli

Venice is one of the world’s biggest tourist destinations, so it doesn’t need much selling from this blog. What I would like to say though, is that when you go, slow down. Venice is such an easy place to get caught up in sight seeing. The Basilica di San Marco, The Doge’s Palace, The Accademia, Le Fenice, La Torre dell’Orologio, Rialto bridge, the legendary “Bridge of Sighs,” the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Palazzo Ducale, and of course the endless arrays of the famous Murano glass are all unmissable sights and it takes a lot of focus to make sure you catch them all; as a result, people tend to come for a couple hours, knock the names off a list, and head out. In fact, the first time I went, that’s what I did. Staying there is expensive and the endless mass of tourists in La Piazza di San Marco are strong deterrents for an extended stay, I get it. But, if you make Venice a day trip, you wont love it.

The sights are amazing, but they can’t be done quickly. The Doge’s Palace is huge. Particularly after a comparatively momentary walk around the Basilica di San Marco, it will have felt like days by the time you exit. But, if you are going to get lost in time, the palace is a great place to do so.

The Accademia houses so much fantastic Italian art, even with a strong pace, you can’t get out in more than a couple hours. Somehow your feet get bogged down in Titian’s deep reds; time slows as you ponder da Vinci’s mesmerizing “Vitruvian Man;” you have to shove through Veronese’s crowded works after climbing, inch by inch, out of the depths of Tintoretto’s perspectives; you find yourself frozen in front of Giorgione’s “Tempest,” admiring the incoming storm, only to find yourself finally glancing at a watch while rushing a cursory scan of one a Liss snap shot of life. After doggedly leaving the gallery, a lazy drink during a Venetian dusk is the only thing you’ll want to do- three more stops before grabbing the late train really isn’t realistic. But, if you are on a time crunch and have to do Venice in a weekend, bite your lip, dig down and sight see for a day; because then you can spend a day as a Venetian.

After spending Saturday running around from stop to stop and bottle of water to bottle of water, Sunday should be for hanging. Back track to those labyrinthine streets that you wondered through, lost, from the train station to (what you thought was the unavoidable conclusion to every street) Basilica di San Marco. Find that lazy piazza with the umbrella covered tables, savory aromas leaking through windows, with the kids playing calcio and old men people watching, cane in hand, Compari not far from reach.

Sit down and be lazy and take in the atmosphere and history of Venice. Sitting around with Venetians, your mind will drift back to its days of commercial superstardom, when the streets were full not of tourists, but velvet and silk clad merchants- Dutch, German, Turk. When master mask shops were flanked not by souvenir stands, but brothels and inns. As you day dream, a procession suddenly emerges from one of the alleys- an entire congregation walking, in song, behind some forgotten relic. An off duty gondolier, exhausted and enjoying a cigarette next to his vessel on the canal, begins a beautiful and tragic song. Even the locals stop for a moment, put forks down, pick up the ball, or turn off the hose to hear the lament.

Un-categorical, Venice is the tourism capital off the world, but remains a place where you can experience that true rustic feel of Italy. So, don’t miss the true gem. When you schedule your next trip to Venice, make sure to leave a day of nothingness, so you can have a cappuccino and some sardines and jam on toast and experience the life of a Venetian for a day.

conversazione con Massimo Patiti

di Francesco La Rosa

BELLEZZA E BENESSERE

The church contains one of the most bizarre shrines that I’ve seen – a side altar on the epistle side aisle, which contains the bodies of two major saints, arranged as a sort of ‘double-decker.’ On the bottom is St Zechariah, the father of St John the Baptist and patron of the church. On top is St Athanasius, Doctor of the Church – with no obvious connection to his saintly neighbour, beyond the fact that he was a great theologian of the Incarnation. It seems strange that these major relics were just put in a side aisle, not even in a chapel of their own! I’m not sure of the provenance of the relics – possibly St Zechariah was pinched from Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade. The Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Cairo also claims the body of St Athanasius…

I highly recommend the Prosciutto & Arugula Pizza! Thin, crispy, and very light crust. Very authentic!

It made history even before it was born.

It is the REGALe, “e” means evolution of a model that doesn’t need presentations. Indeed, the new saddle is founded on the known REGAL, born during the seventies and used by the greatest riders as Cipollini, Boonen, McEwen, LeMonde and Chiappucci. Classical inspiration, ultra-modern performances.

Always loved the original Regal although having never owned one myself. Now this rather updated version looks great and no doubt much lighter than it’s older brother, if that sort of thing bothers you ( Hardy ).

On the 1st October we decided to take a trip to Atina, which is about an hour’s drive from us at “Tre Cancelle”. This was the Feast Day of Atina’s Patron Saint, San Marco Galileo.

Saint Mark was a disciple of Saint Peter the apostle and whilst on his way to Rome Saint Peter is said to have ordained him as the first Bishop of Atina in 45 AD. San Marco was martyred in approximately 96 AD and a church was built on the site of his burial.

His statue resides in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and his feast day is celebrated in Atina each year with a formal religious procession, brass band concerts are held in the square in front of the cathedral and the celebrations culminate in a grand firework display. For the occasion, at night the town is beautiful illuminated with impressive displays of fairy lights.

Arte e iconografia in area adriatica”.

Over the past couple of years we have had the pleasure of meeting a number of visitors who have come

Over the past couple of years we have had the pleasure of meeting a number of visitors who have come to this area of Italy to try and trace their Italian ancestry, some with relatives who came from the Val di Comino area.

My own maternal grandparents originated from the beautiful mountain community of Atina, Frosinone, overlooking the River Melfa and the Meta and Mainarde mountains.

In Italy, in the latter half of the 1800’s and during the early 1900’s, times were very hard, many people toiled in miserable conditions and experienced severe hardship and poverty due to poor wages and food shortages. Thus my grandfather Benedetto felt restless, as many Italian families departed for distant lands: to America, France, Belgium, Scotland, and England. His elder brother and sister had already moved to live in London, and Benedetto, longing for adventure was also enticed by the prospect of emigration to a new land of opportunity.

Thus in the Summer of 1911 my Italian grandparents first set foot on English soil, and made their way to the city of London, to the district of Clerkenwell, the Italian quarter know as “Little Italy”. They rented a dilapidated house close to St Peter’s Italian Church, which was to be their home for many years to come. Here my mother was born and she was brought up in the Italian community. My grandmother Maria Grazia always pined for her home town of Atina and never managed to learn to speak English.

I was born nearby in the heart of London, “within the sound of Bow Bells”, so I suppose I could be considered to be an “Italian Cockney”. I have always had a true passion for Italy and all things Italian, and felt a real need to see for myself “the land of my forefathers”, visit Atina and walk in the footsteps of my grandparents.

15 years ago my husband and I spent a memorable fortnight staying with some of my Italian cousins, in Atina. It was our first meeting but we were so warmly welcomed and received into the family fold and Atina transpired to be even more charming than I could ever have imagined.

Thus began our irresistible love affair with “La Bella Italia”, and of course the very special town of Atina, which finally inspired us to risk everything, sell up lock, stock and barrel and entirely transform our lifestyle by moving to Italy.

Since then we have got to know several people who have family who originated from the Atina area, and since the creation of my Atina / Val di Comino website we have received many enquiries from people with ancestors from this beautiful area and share my passion for it.

Aldo De Angelis and his wife June from Scotland are tracing his family roots in Atina and Belmonte Castello – family surnames: De Angelis, Delicata, Ianetta, Notarangelo.

Whilst in Atina recently we asked at the Comune and at the local library whether there was a list of the graves in Atina Cemetery, but nobody there seemed to know. The main cemetery is located near the ruined church of San Marco and the church of San Pietro.

So, Paul and I have spent many hours browsing around and looking for the graves of my relatives. Some of the graves have some wonderful statues.

If anyone wants us to go and look for graves of family members who have passed away, and who may have been laid to rest in Atina Cemetery, we are happy to go and look for them whilst we are visiting our family in the area.

Common surnames of Atina include:

Amata / Amato, Bastianelli, Bove, Caira, Coppola, Di Angelis, De Luca Delicata, Di Duca, Di Paolo, Fortunata, Mancini, Marini, Nardelli, Rossi, Sabatini, Tamburrini, Tortolani, Visocchi , Volante.

Yes we are sad family history “anoraks” !!!

Sadly we got addicted years ago, and there’s little hope for us now.

We already belong to the Guild of One Name Studies and are carrying out a “one name study” of the surname Shapcott and its variant spellings.

Also I have been considering making an application for my Italian citizenship through what is known as “jure sanguine”.

As both of my grandparents were both born and married in Atina, and they did not became naturalised British citizens during their life-time I should be entitled to Italian citizenship. Amongst the documentation required to obtain this is my grandparents’ marriage certificate and their birth certificates.

I know that they were both born in Atina and even have details of their parents and grandparents, as I have seen their families listed on the “Stato di Famiglia” held by the Comune of Atina. So recently we visited the townhall to ask for copies of the above certificates. Sadly, the staff there were not exactly welcoming and accommodating. They said they would take the information and that we would have to come back another day. I recently heard from my cousin in Atina that the Comune had failed to find the requested documents, so I am somewhat down-hearted.

But … I will persevere !!!

This is Italy !!! Nothing is simple, especially regarding bureaucracy. I have tried to organise an opportunity to look through some of Atina’s church registers, but to no avail, it seems that they are guarded with a rod of iron by the Parish Priest.

As yet Italians just don’t seem to “get” family history, indeed it is far from the popular pass-time in the UK where within County Halls and libraries there are departments dedicated to giving the public access to the Saint Catherine’s Index of Births, Deaths and Marriages, numerous Censuses, Church Registers, old newspapers etc. etc.

Italians still fail to realise how important it is for people to be able trace one’s family roots and learn so much about local social and cultural history. If you ask Italians about their ancestors, they sometimes get quite nervous and seem guarded, perhaps suspicious that some stranger may be after some money or trying to claim back some old derelict house of piece of family land !!! There are so many family disputes regarding ownership of land in Italy.

Anyway, I will keep you posted on our progress with my goal of obtaining my Italian Citizenship.

Anyone with ancestors from the Atina / Val di Comino area –

We’d love to hear from you !!!

Venice was…okay. I didn’t have a bad time or anything, actually it was pretty great, but

Venice was…okay. I didn’t have a bad time or anything, actually it was pretty great, but overall it is really one of those overrated tourists traps. I’m still glad I went because I think it’s a city that everyone should see once in their life, however, compared to Cinque Terre, it didn’t move me in quite the same way.

We took the 3 hour train at 6 in the morning and got in around 9 and then we walked over the grand canal and through some winding walk ways to the Piazza di San Marco where the world famous Basilica is. Although defiantly one of the most beautiful spots in the city, it was slightly ruined by the fact that one, the entire piazza was flooded, and two, the makeshift bridges were totally incapable of handling the tourist overload.

I didn’t end up going into the Basilica, you can see the line above, but instead took a leisurely walk through Venice. I actually discovered a little bit about my traveling style on this trip. I understand wanting to see the main sights in a city, like making sure you see the Eiffel Tower in Paris, however I don’t like my trips to be overrun by an exact schedule. I don’t want to pull out the map every five seconds to make sure I’m going in the right direction, and I would rather drink an espresso on the Grand Canal then fight through crowds and water to see something I only heard about right before I arrived. I’m not saying sight seeing or museum visiting is wrong, it’s just not me. Some of the other girls and I ended up separating from the group and did a little shopping. I got a ring with Venetian glass and a handmade journal. Towards the end of the trip, me and one of the other girls decided to take a break from the sight seeing, got some pizza, and decided to leisurely head back to the train station. Right away we hit a stretch of road packed with people and decided to find away around, of course we immediately made a wrong turn. We passed by this old man, we’ll call him Signore, who watched us hit a dead end and then offered to show us back to the train station. Meeting Signore was the highlight of my trip.

Tracey and Signore

Signore told us that he had lived in Venice all of this life and that he was 90 years old. He said that he was happy to show us to the train station, that everyday he took a walk while his wife makes dinner, and that that’s what she was doing now. He liked to remind us that we had to walk slowly because he was and old man.. He also told us how when he was young he spoke Spanish, French, German, and English, he was worried his english was rusty, but we assured him it was perfect. Walking with a native Venetian who not only took the time to not only show some lost girls the way, but also tell them about his life, was priceless. I’ll never forget it.

Overall Venice, worth seeing? Sure. Worth staying there for a trip? Not really. It’s a stop over, not a place you need to spend much time in. Also I’m sorry no gondola ride for me. I’m not paying 100 euro. I did take a pretty picture though. Until next time, ciao!

Venice Day 2 Waking up was rough on everyone with the majority climbing out of bed at 11:30 or later

Venice Day 2

Waking up was rough on everyone with the majority climbing out of bed at 11:30 or later. One of the guys working at the hostel took me to his fav breakfast place where I had my caffe latte and some sort of apple tart before heading to the vaportto and attacking the Accedemia. Unlike most museums I’ve been to, this one has great English guides in each room so I picked up each as I went, sat facing one wall and read up on the art before turning and doing the same to another wall. Thoroughly enjoyable as I could learn about the painting and sit down! Two hours later I was melting and needed to be fed so I headed outside and stumbled on a cafe with panzerotto, a yummy panini type thing. I chilled and sorted my postcards, ate, and drank a couple litres of water before setting out again. I decided against the water bus and instead walked across the accedemia bridge and over to San Marco. Once there I took in the line ups and decided I would come back early the next day. I found some creamy mango ice cream (not as good as in Milan) and devoured it as I searched for stamps and the post office (look out for those!).

Zoe, Kim, and I had agreed to meet at 5 to go for the essential Venetian experience – the gondola ride. It was cheaper for us to pool than go alone so we went in search of a gonalier and agreed on 70 euro for 30 min (yup, not cheap!). The ride was great tho, up the grand canal from S. Toma an then into the canals near the hostel in and around San Polo. I loved the silence of it after the crowds of Venice and Zoe got her singing gondalier as another boat was serranaded.

After the ride we headed to Campo San Polo to find an early dinner before Zoe’s departure. I had aleady decided on dinner at the hostel but grabbed a caprese salad to hold me over till then. My 6,50 salad was massive and thoroughly enjoyable after a week of pasta and pizza.

We headed back to the hostel for quiet time before dinner at 8:45 in the hostel (this time pesto pasta, also yummy). It was only Karina, Kim, and I from the night before but we had new faces willing to go out: two Americans, Colleen and Arianna; and a fellow Canadian from Edmonton. They all drank wine while I joined in the conversation, talking till a little after midnight when they headed out and I headed to bed…planned a busy day at Murano and Burano for the next day and I needed some sleep!

Pictures: Breaky, a pretty painting in the Accedemia, lunch looking onto construction and the Accedemia bridge, the ultimate wrap ie the bridge of sighs, Me on the gondala, the Rialto from the boat

In mare finiscono liquami scuri.

Io non ne so nulla».
