San Mateo Cops Get Creative

With the budget cuts and price of gas, the San Mateo Police Department has gotten creative in its efforts to curb speeders. Officer David Coy is reporting for duty on a street near you.

If you’re used to making California stops, Officer Coy may make you change your ways. Just the presence of a black and white can encourage drivers to reconsider running that light or encroaching into a crosswalk with a pedestrian in it. By the time you realize that Coy is a decoy – get it?! – it’ll be too late and you will have conformed to the code – making his shift worth while.

The San Mateo Daily news will provide you with the details. But if you think you’re ahead of Police Chief Manheimer, think again. She’s no dummy. She promises that they’ll be switching it up by arming Coy with a camera or a shift change with a real live officer.

Yesterday it was 85 degrees outside but so air-conditioned in my San Mateo office that I had the heater on. When I went to get lunch, I never went back. Unfortunately I wasn’t really prepared for my spur of the moment trip to the beach, but that didn’t stop me.

Spotlight Pedro Point, Pacifica

Pedro Point is one of my favorite places in Pacifica. It’s an ecclectic neighborhood that includes Nona’s and Baro lo restaurants, Exteme Pizza, Ace Hardware. There’s also a bike rental and the well known Nor Cal Surf Shop. It’s a mystery what will be taking the place of the former gym; rumor has it that it will be a grocery store along the lines of Whole Foods.

From the parking lot you can wander onto Linda Mar Beach to watch the surfers and sunsets. Here’s a link to a live camera.

Real estate in this corner of Pacifica is pretty expensive. With these views, I’m sure you expected that one. Currently there are six homes for sale: $849,000 to $2,750,000. You can guess which is my favorite.

Bob DeLouche, a local builder, turned this monster into a beauty. It is 2,680 square feet of master construction. Every detail has been attended to. Hand-made fixtures, specialized paint techniques, top-of-the-line appliances. It is truly exquisite. What I haven’t mentioned about this home is that on a clear day you can see forever. On one particular sparking day we could see the bridge.

Heather Dog Park, San Carlos

Over the weekend I spent some time at Heather Dog Park in San Carlos. It’s as much for humans as it is for the dogs. It’s located on Melendy adjacent to the Heather School grounds. There’s a notice posted that the park may be slated for removal, but I called City Hall and they don’t know anything about it. They’re looking into it and will get back to me. I’ll repost if there’s something you can do to submit your comments.
