Mermaid’s Purses become dry, black and brittle when they dry out on the beach. So they look very different from the fresh ones which are olive brown colour and translucent. The egg and embryo can often be seen within the egg case when it is fresh.

These photographs show the dessicated, black egg case of a Skate or Ray. These are different from the fresh Dogfish egg cases illustrated in the previous posts, Mermaid’s Purses at Fall Bay and Some more Mermaid’s Purses from Gower. Dog fish egg cases are a more elongated rectangle with curling tendrils on each corner that are used to attach the cases to seaweed or other objects. The Skate egg case, in comparison, is squarer in outline and has stiff curving spikes on each corner.

Also, why are there so many words for the most common of geological formations? Such as pebbles; couldn’t we just call them tiny stones or rocks? Or, perhaps the number of words there are for stones and rocks comes from society’s dissatisfaction with all the names. In that case, could we call all stones & rocks ‘Steven’? Wouldn’t the world be a lot simpler, and possibly funnier, if you could say: ‘Wait a sec, I’ve got a Steven in my shoe.’

The ragged tree stumps and roots, strewn over the seashore at Broughton Bay on the north coast of the Gower Peninsula, are the remains of a birch tundra woodland that once covered the ancient land surface. They lie in position, just as they were growing before they were inundated. Ten thousand years ago in the Pleistocene Period, a large river, fed by tributaries such as the Loughor, occupied what is now the Bristol Channel with its Atlantic waters. The last extension of the ice sheets in this area, during the late Devensian Period, had been about 8,500 years earlier. As the ice receded up into the valleys of South Wales, the climate had warmed up and allowed vegetation to flourish. The sea level at that time was about 22.5 metres lower than it is at the present.

By the beginning of the Neolithic Period 5,700 years ago, however, the sea level began to rise because of the increasing volume of global meltwater and its accompanying land subsidence. The forests and peat bogs of the coastal margins were submerged and buried in sediment…..until the 1980s when the remains began to reappear on Gower shores as the surface sediments began to erode away. Now, large expanses of Broughton beach have been stripped of sand showing the strata and entrapped woodland beneath.

Wood from these ancient forests is visible on the seashores of Swansea Bay and Port Eynon on the south Gower coast as well. Large blocks of peat dating from this time also wash up on the sand at Whiteford – the next bay to Broughton. The plant species already recorded include silver birch, hazel, alder, elder, deergrass, rushes, irises and spurges. As I understand it, no full investigation of this palaeo-environment has yet been conducted. I hope that full attention can soon be given to this valuable evidence before the rapid rate of erosion destroys all that is readily accessible between tides.

Before:

During:

After:

Side-by-side comparions:

I am pleased with the result although saddened by the paint chipping as a hammered out the dent. No way around that I guess. I definitely saw a real life example of why I weightlift though. As you can see, on the left the bumper is bent at a decent angle. To fix this, I basically did a modified rack pull and deadlifted the bad angle out. Also the rear quarter panel (Is it called that on trucks?) was bent some and I sat down and pulled like I was doing a sitting low row and pulled the dent out. You can see the obvious results on the right.

It took some sanding and some patient repainting of my bumper, but you would never know what happened (and never will, so don’t ask) if it wasn’t for the split paint. Although a body shop would have fixed it as good as new, I would have been out several hundred dollars. My fix cost me a can of Rust-Oleum flat black, and some wet/dry fine grit sandpaper. Total? Less than $10.

I am just making an aquarium, which is not deep, but we can walk on it. I’m just designing the aquarium where I can live, materials I am thinking of are acrylic, rocks and sands.

Just thinking how to divide the rooms, using acrylic board? or rocks?

There are several friends with me, some of them are working on design industries, interior stuff etc. We walked around a huge shop where selling lots of stuff about aquarium or materials for art or housing. One shop has a huge aquarium tank divided into 2 spaces by huge rocks, which looks cool.

We went to someone’s office, which is thin and old building but kind of retro-lovely place. The steps are narrow but there are many lovely drawings on the wall, which are drawn by the main artist of the office. I found a micro bike at 2nd floor of the office which is really similar to the one I have, but new. I feel happy with it.

We moved the desks or sofas to make space for making plan. We all are excited to design cool aquarium together. The office on the 2nd floor was only 2nd floor, but a lot higher than other buildings. We could see whole town under our eyes.

I feel I know everybody here, some girls some guys, the main artist of the office is thin guy, wearing pink shirt and little hat. He is kind of famous designer but also an artist.

We are discussing about the water system, if the aquarium is huge enough and enough equipments, then we don”t have to be bothered about changing or cleaning water.

What kind of fish or plants? I would love to have green fresh plants a lot, and lovely little fish.

I walk around the office and really loved the place. I’m not the one working there but I really want to be there all day, reading books, talking to people, drawing or anything. This is a kind of place where makes people creative and productive!

These pebbles were all photographed within a few metres of each other on the beach at Whiteford Point, Gower. A relatively small selection showing a wide variety of shape, colour, texture, pattern and composition. There are limestones, sandstones, conglomerates, and fossils. Ovals, triangles, rectangles and boot-shapes! Red, yellow, orange, brown, buff, grey and blue-grey. Rusty patterns made by the inclusion of iron minerals within the stone. Patterns made by an assortment of rock types of different sizes cemented together. Designs formed by the inclusion of fossil corals. Patterns made by quartz veins in the mother rock. Pebbles derived from local rocks like Old Red Devonian sandstone, Carboniferous limestone, Millstone Grit and Coal Measures. Pebbles delivered to the Point from much further afield courtesy of an ice sheet.

On the beach at Del Mar last night in heavy fog. Very spooky/cool feeling. Have spent a lot of time the last several days hanging out between Del Mar and Solana Beach – both very nice. Love the cliffs and the inlets that one can’t get to when the waves come up. Just loved standing in the shallow waves. The dark night at Del Mar–best part was the moisture dripping from the eucalyptus. Those long, grey-green, down-pointed leaves make the best gloom.

Warum die Spanier jetzt schon anfangen für ein Event zu werben, das in zwei Jahren stattfindet, bleibt mir ein Rätsel.
