By Cara Sulieman

THE proud parents of Scots MOBO songstress Emeli Sande said they always had faith their “little girl” would make it big in music – before watching her perform before a TV audience of millions last night.

Thrilled Diane and Joel Sande travelled down from the family home in Alford, Aberdeenshire last night (Wed) to watch their daughter perform on stage at the SECC in Glasgow with rapper Chipmunk.

And whilst for many this is just the start of the talented singer’s career, for her parents it is the result of many years hard work.

It culminated in last night’s performance of Diamond Rings, written by the talented Scots student, and nominated for Best Song.

Glasgow University

Diane, 48, said: “She has worked very hard for the last few years to get here. Not only does she put all the effort into her music, but she manages to juggle it with her studies as well.”

The 22-year-old is a full-time student at Glasgow University in her fourth year of medicine and manages to make time for both her work and her music.

Diane said: “We’re very pleased that she has decided to keep on at her studies, her degree is very important to us as a family.

“But equally I said to her when she left to go to university that she needed to make time for her music.

“Balance out”

“Writing and performing is a passion for her and I think it’s helpful for her to have these two very different things in her life.

“They balance each other out.

“She’s said that she’s met a lot of other people on her course who have very creative hobbies so it must be a common combination.”

Her two biggest fans – who will always know their “little girl” by her real name Adele – aren’t putting too much emphasis on the Best Song gong as the performance means more to them.

“Icing on the cake”

Speaking before the awards last night (Weds) Joel Sande said: “The award doesn’t matter so much, everyone will see her performing on the stage and hear her music.

“That is the most important thing out of everything.”

And proud mum Diane added: “It doesn’t matter if she wins or not. Performing at the Mobos is the most exciting part of the experience, if Diamond Rings wins the award then that would be the icing on the cake.”

And the couple are taking their daughter’s rise to fame in their stride, pragmatically saying that it is “what she deserves”.

Regulars at her gigs up and down the country, they chat away to musicians and writers from EMI – who Emeli has a publishing deal with – and rappers and producers who work with their daughter.

“Better than them”

But it seems natural to them as they have always had confidence in Emeli’s talent.

Joel said: “It is good that she is getting recognition now after all the work she has put in.

“We used to sit and watch other people getting signed up and performing and I would think ‘My Adele is better than them’.

“And now everyone has noticed how good she is. Music has always been important to her and to us as a family.”

Although her father teaches Technology at her old school – Alford Academy – he also set up the school choir in which Emeli was a founding member.

“Bit odd”

The rap song that has brought her success is quite different from the soul music she writes for herself and it took her family some time to get used to it.

Joel said: “Diamond Rings is a very catchy song but when she first sent it up to us to listen to we thought it was a bit odd.

“It grows on you – I think everyone thinks that about it.”

Whatever happens in the future, Diane and Joel will be behind her 100 per cent, and fully intend to be standing at the back cheering on their daughter at as many performances they can make.

Diane: “We are always very proud of her. So much has happened for her recently and she deserves everything she is getting.”

A SCOTS medical student has been burning the midnight oil after being told she will be performing at next week’s Mobo awards in Glasgow with smash R&B star Chipmunk.

Emeli Sande – who has just started her fourth year studying medicine at Glasgow University – will take to the stage in Glasgow on Wednesday after being nominated for her part in his hit record Diamond Rings.

She composed the platinum-selling tune – up for Best Song at the Mobo awards – while vacuuming in her bedroom.

But now she is frantically juggling her time between rehearsals in London for the performance and her demanding university schedule.

“Exhausting”

She flew down to London on Monday to meet with Chipmunk and Flawless for their practice sessions on Monday, having to be back in class at 8.30am the following morning.

She said: “Going to Mobo rehearsals with Chipmunk and Flawless involved a plane for an hour then taxi for 70 miles.

“Then I got the overnight train at 12am to be in university at 8.30am. Exhausting”

The 22-year-old has been working away at her music career since she was schoolkid and celebrated a whirlwind year – signing a publishing deal with music giants EMI and recording her own songs.

Chance meeting

She said: “I have been working to this since I was 11. Eleven years later here I am – let the writing commence.”

As well as Chipmunk, X-Factor judge and Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole has recorded another of Emeli’s songs – ‘Boys’ – for her upcoming solo project.

But writing was something the Aberdeen-born artist never though she would do seriously – only coming about through a chance meeting.

Emeli said: “I was doing a show in London for 1Xtra and I met this guy called Naughty Boy.

“He has been trying to build up his name as a producer and asked if I wanted to work with him on a few things.

“We got in the studio and we clicked work wise. I just really enjoyed listening to what he was doing – it was so different from other people’s stuff.

“It’s crazy”

“We just started writing, not necessarily for me, we just thought ‘lets write a pop tune’ and experiment.

“And we wrote the Chipmunk track and I thought nothing of it. Naughty Boy sent it off to Chipmunk who really liked it and wrote his stuff around it.

“It’s just strange that some little song that I wrote in my bedroom has had so much success and airplay. It’s crazy.”

Finishing her education is one of the most important things to Emeli, whose manager, Adrian Sykes, has been waiting patiently since she was 16.

“See how it goes”

She said: “Adrian really respects that I want to get an education behind me. He also knows my parents are keen that I finish university.

“It’s really good having people behind you who aren’t rushing you to do something or don’t respect what you’re trying to achieve.

“I’ve managed to pass my exams in medicine and make things happen in music so the plan is to continue to try and balance it for the next two years and I’ll see how that goes.”

A SCOTS medical student has been signed up to music giants EMI publishing after composing the Mobo-nominated Chipmunk record Diamond Rings.

Emeli Sande – who is about to start her fourth year of medicine at Glasgow University – signed a deal with the music giants on Thursday.

It comes after she penned the platinum-selling tune – while vacuuming in her bedroom.

An excited Emeli, who will be at the Mobo awards in Glasgow next month, said yesterday: “I am now a professional songwriter.”

“Let the writing commence”

The 22-year-old has been writing and performing her own songs since she was 11, and is thrilled to have finally have her songs used by artists.

She said: “I have been working to this since I was 11. Eleven years later here I am – let the writing commence.”

As well as Chipmunk, Cheryl Cole has recorded Emeli’s song ‘Boys’ for her upcoming solo project.

But writing was something the Aberdeen-born artist never though she would do seriously – as with many things in her life it came about through a chance meeting.

Naughty Boy

Emeli said: “I was doing a show in London for 1Xtra and I met this guy called Naughty Boy.

“He has been trying to build up his name as a producer and asked if I wanted to work with him on a few things.

“It’s just strange that some little song that I wrote in my bedroom has had so much success and airplay. It’s crazy.”

Daddy

But the performer is determined to make her name as a singer-songwriter rather than standing behind the success of other people, and plans to release her debut single later this year.

She said: “About five months ago I went to London to do showcases for about six different record companies.

“There’s been different interest in signing me up but I want to be in a stronger position so that’s why we decided to release a single independently.

“We’re going to release ‘Daddy’ in August and hopefully once that’s out there and people know who I am I’ll be in a stronger position to say what type of music I do and I can choose who I want to be with.”

Glasgow University

And finishing her education is one of the most important things to Emeli, whose manager, Adrian Sykes, has been waiting patiently since she was 16.

She said: “Adrian really respects that I want to get an education behind me. He also knows my parents are keen that I finish university.

I have been lucky enough to experience being in American, English and Canadian African descended com

I have been lucky enough to experience being in American, English and Canadian African descended communities. I am struck by the similarities between the communities. It proves that although African slaves were stripped of everything material, they had, they maintained their culture and passed it down through the generations. Many of these commonalities are often demeaned, and used as fodder for comedians. This blog series will list some of these common cultural practices.

Handshakes and hugs

African American influenced handshakes have been the subject imitation all over the world. These greetings are often seen as flashy and excessive instead respectful and decorous. African Americans do not simply shake hands when they are making an introduction handshakes are an everyday greeting. They happen when one agrees with another or when someone says witty (i.e snapping). Have you ever wondered why African descended men shake hands and women usually don’t? Women simply hug. The answer lies in the remnants of secret societies that are predominant in West Africa. Slaves were heavily abducted from the Mende, Sherbro, Kpelle, and other neighboring peoples of Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Liberia, and Guinea. Those slaves brought these practices to the Americas. The Poro (for males) and the Sande (for females) were responsible for guiding individuals to adulthood and supervising and regulating the sexual, social, and political conduct of all members of the wider society

The societies have had a great influence on African American culture. Cinqe of the Armistead used his Poro training to organize slaves to mutiny. His actions lead to on of the first legal discussions about slavery in America. Elements of these secret societies can be seen in maroon communities in the Caribbean. These groups of runaway slaves used rituals from African societies to bind the group together. The maroons used this secret information to rescue others from the savageries of slavery. The remnants of Poro-Sande societies survived in the religious practices of the Gullah people of the Sea Islands. The slaves of the Sea Island were isolated from European descended culture and
their Christianity is strongly influenced by those who survived the middle passage. The black Christian practice of baptism has a direct line back to the Poro-Sande rituals. So next time you give someone a pound, dap, skin or five remember you are recalling the knowledge of your ancestors.

It is hard beyond belief to forgive someone who really wronged you. Sometimes even little things that others do to annoy, irritate, or just tick us off make it nearly impossible to forgive that person. Remember that neighbor last fall who threw all his leaves on your side of the fence? If we’d have things our way, next year he’d get twice the amount of leaves on his side!

Well, obviously revenge (even “leaf revenge”) is not becoming for a Christian. As Ken Sande wrote, “Christians are the most forgiven people in the world. Therefore, we should be the most forgiving people in the world” (p. 204). In other words, we should treat those who wrong us like God treated us: with abundant mercy and forgiveness.

Here are a few notes from Sande on what our forgiveness should look like, based on the gospel.

1) Forgiveness is an act of the will.

2) Forgiveness is not a passive process of forgetting or letting something fade in memory. Rather, it is an active process which involves a conscious choice and deliberate course of action. Is 43.25 says that God has willed to remember our sins no more. Same for us: we draw on God’s grace and decide not to think or talk about what others have done to hurt us.

3) Forgiveness is not excusing by saying, “Its okay, it wasn’t that big of a deal.” Forgiveness is the opposite of excusing – forgiveness says, “yes, we both know that what you did was wrong, but since God has forgiven me, so also I forgive you.”

4) Forgiveness can be costly and painful. Sometimes certain effects of a person’s sins linger for quite a long time – you have to fight against painful memories, work on trusting the person, and sometimes you may have to deal with physical costs such as finances or injury. The forgiving heart will put the other person first and self last.

Again, Sande repeatedly reminds the “forgiver” of the gospel: I will remember their sins no more…he has removed our transgressions from us…love keeps no record of wrongs (Jer 31.34, Ps 103.12, 1 Cor 13.5, etc). This radical forgiveness results in our radical forgiveness of others.

I’ll close with a few promises a forgiving person makes when he or she says, “I forgive you.”

1) I will not dwell on this incident.

2) I will not bring up this incident again and use it against you.

3) I will not talk to others about this incident.

4) I will not let this incident stand between us or hinder our personal relationship.

This is where our faith in Christ hits the road: if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other, as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive (Col 3.13).

Answers given by 2nd grade school children to the following questions:

Why did God make mothers?

1. She’s the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.

2. Mostly to clean the house.

3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.

How did God make mothers?

1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.

2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.

3. God made my Mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts.

What ingredients are mothers made of?

1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.

2. They had to get their start from men’s bones. Then they mostly use string, I think.

Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom?

1. We’re related.

2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people’s moms like me.

What kind of little girl was your mom?

1. My Mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff.

2. I don’t know because I wasn’t there, but my guess would be pretty bossy.

3. They say she used to be nice.

What did Mom need to know about dad before she married him?

1. His last name.

2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk on beer?

3. Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores?

Why did your mom marry your dad?

1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my Mom eats a lot.

2. She got too old to do anything else with him.

3. My grandma says that Mom didn’t have her thinking cap on.

Who’s the boss at your house?

1. Mom doesn’t want to be boss, but she has to because dad’s such a goof ball.

2. Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed.

3. I guess Mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than dad.

What’s the difference between moms & dads?

1. Moms work at work and work at home and dads just go to work at work.

2. Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them.

3. Dads are taller & stronger, but moms have all the real power ’cause that’s who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friend’s.

4. Moms have magic; they make you feel better without medicine.

What does your mom do in her spare time?

1. Mothers don’t do spare time.

2. To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long.

What would it take to make your mom perfect?

1. On the inside she’s already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.

2. Diet. You know–her hair. I’d diet, maybe blue.

One of the things that has taken up much of my time this last year has been conflict with others. Like most of us – I really don’t like confrontation! God led me, through the recommendation of my husband, to The Peacemaker by Ken Sande. The book is not about how to get things my way or avoid conflict rather to address conflict in a manner that would glorify God. I learned so much and God did a work in my own heart as a result of this book.

My own conflict has quelled for the moment; however, I will keep this book nearby as a resource for future conflicts. Things did not always go the way I wanted them to but I learned to please God regardless of how the other individuals responded. I highly recommend this book for anyone involved in a conflict – is there anyone immune from such things?

the following is an e-mail from my mother to me and my three younger sisters:

Date: Wed, 2 Jul 2008 06:58:55 -0700
Subject: A few things to be aware of

Just wanted to pass this info along after seeing it on the news the last two days:

When your kids (or adults) are playing in the sand on the beach, they need to be watched. Some kids are digging holes too deep and the sand caves in around them, suffocating them. If this happens, call for help, try to find their head and put your hand over their nose and mouth to give them a pocket of air to breathe until they can be dug out.

The second thing is about grilling out. When you are cooking on the grill, it needs to be at least 10 feet from your house. Many houses have caught on fire because the grill shot out flames, burning the side of the house which moved up to the roof. There have also been explosions with gas grills.

I know you think I am a worry wart but these are just good things to know.
Love you all very much,
Mom

An excerpt from the book What About The Kids? by Judith Wallerstein & Sandra Blakeslee: “Mothers

An excerpt from the book What About The Kids? by Judith Wallerstein & Sandra Blakeslee:

“Mothers after divorce seem to acquire an infinite capacity for guilt…They feel guilty when their children stumble in the dark. Women feel everything is their fault. They blame themselves for divorces they’re responsible for, for divorces they’re not responsible for, and for every mishap in their child’s life…These feelings of guilt can last decades…Let me say emphatically, enough already!…You would have made mistakes if you had married Prince Charming or if you had stayed married to Satan. You’ll do a lot that’s right because you love your children. Try to forgive yourself for your real and imagined sins of commission and omission. Try to be a gentler person with yourself. Take pride in the enormity of your accomplishment. Whatever your aspirations, you can’t do it all. Give yourself a break from your self-accusations.”

Naja – dann muss man eben gehen.

Also manche sind schon schwierige Patienten…
