Well our big boy started school yesterday. We were lucky to find a place close enough to walk. He had a great day, decorated a Christmas present, played with a puzzle, had a snack, and was enjoying playing outside when I went to pick him out. He was running around and said he had a good time. La Fondation HCB (ici et 2 impasse Lebouis) présente une exposition consacrée au photographe allemand August Sander (1876-1964) jusqu’au 20 décembre 2009. En ce triste après-midi dominical je me suis donc décidé à aller voir cet auteur que j’avais découvert en 2008 au Goethe Institut (ici, sans faire de billet… car ce blog n’existait pas encore)  et revu quelques mois plus tard à Sérignan (billet ici). Pourtant, j’avais une appréhension car la dernière visite (il y a un an) avait été peu concluante et j’avais trouvé le prix d’entrée exagéré (billet ici).

Disons le tout de suite, je pourrai reprendre ce dernier article en remplaçant seulement le nom du photographe. Il est annoncé une centaine de photographies et je n’en reviens toujours pas que, une fois de plus, j’en avais fait le tour en une demi-heure en ayant le sentiment de n’avoir rien vu. L’exposition montre à la fois des botaniques et sous-bois, études de mains et paysages, c’est sa force car on méconnait probablement ce volet en France mais il n’en reste pas moins que c’est sa typologie des métiers et professions qui reste le plus fort et qu’au final l’exposition au Goethe Institut centrée sur ce seul aspect était bien plus intense. On voit bien ici des portraits mais, égarés dans le reste de l’accrochage, ils perdent leur force sérielle. A noter quand même le portrait de Mme Sander et de ses enfants, réalisé par August Sander.

Vandaag is er een eerste gesprek geweest tussen Michael Dawkins, Karin Kampert en Sander Vrugt van Keulen… wij willen graag gedrieën de kar gaan trekken voor Giving it Forward!

Een razend goed idee dat geboren is in het brein van Michael en dat nu uitvoering en vorm gaat krijgen. Gezamenlijk gaan we hier iets heel erg moois van maken. We denken daarbij vooralsnog aan een digitaal gedeelte, maar ook aan fysieke ontmoetingen. Daarbij gaan allen die iets willen geven elkaar treffen… om te ontvangen!

De eerste start is gemaakt met de groep Giving it Forward op LinkedIn, je kunt je daar nog steeds aanmelden. Seats to Meet en Mindz.com hebben zich als partners opgesteld en faciliteren door het beschikbaar stellen van ruimtes om te vergaderen en het event te houden.

Via deze nieuwe site gaan we proberen jullie bij voortduring op de hoogte te houden van de laatste ontwikkelingen; eigenlijk al gaande weg zul je hier de ontwikkeling en groei van Giving it Forward gaan meemaken.

Kui ma oma töökaaslastelt eelmise nädala lõpus küsisin, et mille pärast on 11. november oluline, siis öeldi, et see on I maailmasõja lõppu tähistav päev. Palju põhjalikumat seletust ma ei saanudki. Traditsiooniliselt toimub igas linnas kell 11 veteranide poolt koostatud teksti (üle Prantsusmaa sama tekst) ettekandmine linnapea pool, pannakse mälestusmärgile lilli ning võib-olla peetakse veel mõni kõne või pakutakse aperatiivi. Enamus inimesi sellest teenistusest aga osa ei võta ning mingeid muid erilisi traditsioone selle vaba päevaga ei seota. Ehk vaid see, et tavapäraselt alati sajab sel päeval. Nii ka eile.

Ühesõnaga on mul olnud pikk nädalavahetus, kokku 5 vaba päeva, mida ma maksimaalselt olen ka ära kasutanud. Laupäeva hommikul uitasin jälle raamatukogus ning ootasin pingsalt lõunat, sest siis pidi Sander jõudma Bergeracist( kuhu ta loomulikult jõudis Eestist) Marmandesse. Nii ka läks ning pärastlõuna veetsime kohaliku eluga tutvudes ja Marmande ilusamaid paiku läbi jalutades. Õhtul oli minu siinse perekonna juures suurem õhtusöök, mis tähendas siis nii 12 inimest, maitsvaid roogasid ning pärast südaööni hoogsat laulmist. (Neil, kel võimalus)Võite Sandrilt ise järele uurida, aga ta oli äärmiselt vaimustunud nii söögist kui ka ülimalt meeleolukast õhkkonnast ning ütles, et niisama turistina Prantsusmaad külastades ei satuks ta eales sellisele koosviibimisele.

Pühapäeval otsustasime pärast põhjalikku kaardisilmitsemist Baskimaale sõita. Valikuid oli mitmeid ning olugi, et ma oleks tahtnud kõike ilusat siin regioonis Sandrile tutvustada, siis oli selge, et kui me just valguse kiirusel ei liigu, siis ei ole see võimalik. Küsisime ka kohalikelt, et mida oleks otstarbekam teha, kuid nii palju kui oli inimesi, oli ka erinevaid soovitusi. Ühesõnaga oli sihtpunktiks Baskimaal asuv Biarritz. Ma ise külastasin Biarritzi juulis, kuid vaatamata kõrgklassi kuurortlinna staatusele ning hirmkallitele hindadele, jättis see väga hea mulje. Pealegi meeldib meile mõlemale Sandriga meri ning Atlandi ookeani ei näe ka iga päev. Autosõit kestis nii 2,5 tundi ning olimegi kõigepealt Bayonnes, kust me suhteliselt kiiresti ka läbi sõitsime ja siis Biarritzis. Meie õnneks või kahjuks möllas seal päris hull torm. See tähendas siis tõesti väga väga kõva tuult ja vihma. Auto termomeeter näitas küll 13 kraadi sooja, kuid õues oli mul seljas siiski paks jope, millega kohe üldse palav ei hakanud. Meri jättis aga unustamatu mulje – hiiglaslikud lained, mis tormis pekslesid vastu kaljusid. Me seisime( nii palju kui see selles tuules võimalik oli) mõlemad lummatult ja ei tahtnud kuhugi poole liikuda. Äge ühesõnaga.

Hiljem proovisime veel Baskimaa traditsioonilist kooki (selline keedukreemiga kook oli) ühes kohvikus ning jõime teed ning jalutasime veidi ringi.

Pean lisama, et need kaks Biarritzi, mida ma nägin juulis ning nüüd novembris, erinesid üksteisest tohutult. Juuli tähendas helesinist ja sooja merd ühes surfaritega, luksusautosid ning peenelt riietatud rahvast (pigem 30-50 aastased paarid kui noored) voorimas mööda kallite firmampoodidega ääristatud tänavaid. November oli aga mässav ja tomine meri, inimtühjad tänavad ning inimesed, kes jooksid mööda katuseääri vihma eest või olid kinninööpitud pealaest jalatallani ning sammusid vapralt tuulele vastu. Kuna kella poole 5-st hakkab siin pimedaks minema ning kell 6 on päris kottpime, siis suundusime pimeduse saabudes tagasi Marmandesse.

Esmaspäeval oli plaanis Toulouse. Kaalusime pikalt, kas minna Bordeaux-sse või poole kaugemal asuvasse Toulouse´i, kuid kuna ma olen Bordeaux-d juba mõned korrad külastanud, siis sai minu veidikese mõjutamise tulemusel otsustatud Toulouse-i kasuks. Nagu hiljem minu perekond mulle ütles, siis nimetatakse Toulouse´i roosaks linnaks, sest seal on palju punastest telliskividest ehitatud maju, kirikuid ning muid hooneid.

Pärast 167 kilomeetrit kiirteel, mis tähendas 12 EURi, jõudsimegi kohale. Ilm oli jällegi novembrine, tuuliselt külm ja sombune. Jalutasime linnas ringi, otsisime turismiinfo ülesse ning sammusime kaardi järgi siis olulisemad kohad läbi. Ausalt öeldes mingit eriliselt suurepärast muljet see meile kummagile ei jätnud. Ilus linn oli, aga ei midagi ahhetama panevat. Ma ei tea, kas mõni suurem linn seda üldse teha suudab, sest linnad on kõik mingil määral üksteise sarnased.

Tagasi Marmande poole sõites kulastasime Toulouse lähedal asuvat väikest linna Montauban. Sattusime täpselt õigeks ajaks, et seista punastest telliskividest suurel sillal, ning näha linnale loojuvat päikest. See oli meeleolukas. Hiljem jalutasime veel väikese tiiru linnas ning sõime imemaitsvaid šokolaadisaiasid, mida me boulangerie-st ostsime.

Ja oligi käes teisipäev ning Sandril tuli tagasi koju sõita. Sõime lõunat koos Marie-ga ning arutasime Eesti kirjanduse üle. Jutustasime talle „Tõe ja õiguse“ lühikokkuvõtet J ning tegime kiirülevaate ka eesti kirjanduse lähiajaloost. Pärast oli veel kiire tutvumine töökaaslastega ja lõunal saatsingi Sandri Bergeraci poole teele taas. Väga mõnusad olid need puhkepäevad siin.

En 1927, Sander entreprend un voyage d’environ trois mois en Sardaigne, avec l’auteur Ludwig Mathar; il fait environ 500 photos. La publication d’un livre sur ce voyage échoue.
En 1929, il publie un premier livre Antlitz der Zeit (Le Visage de ce temps), un choix de 60 portraits deMenschen des 20. Jahrhunderts (Les Hommes du XXe siècle).
Le nazisme affecte fortement son travail et sa vie personnelle : son fils Erich, membre du Sozialistischen Arbeiterpartei Deutschlands (SAP), (Parti socialiste ouvrier d’Allemagne), est arrêté en 1934 et condamné à la prison où il mourra en 1944 peut avant la fin de sa peine; en 1936, son livre Antlitz der Zeit est saisi et les exemplaires imprimés détruits.
Pendant la guerre, il déplace son Lebensmittelpunkt (lieu officiel d’habitation pour le rationnement alimentaire) à Kuchhausen dans le Westerwald, où il peut mettre en sécurité la plupart de ses négatifs et de ses photographies avant les bombardements. Son studio est détruit en 1944 par une attaque aérienne.
En 1946, Sander commence une vaste série d’images sur les destructions de la guerre à Cologne.

Sa tombe se trouve au Melaten-Friedhof (de), principal cimetière de Cologne.

“This… is not what I was expecting to see, I have to admit.”

Anders tensed at the sound of Einar’s voice. He looked briefly at Clara and then beyond her, to see her husband standing in the doorway. Einar’s brows were furrowed and his mouth set in a frown. His face had taken on a red hue and his hand was clenched around a dagger.

“What were you expecting?” Anders asked. His voice trembled just a bit. There was no way to escape the predicament. Someone was going to die. It was just a question of who that would be.

Einar growled. It was a low, inhuman sound. Then, before either Anders or Clara could react, he grabbed his wife and pulled her away from the bed. “What, he says,” Einar said, clutching Clara to his body. “Would you like to tell him, my dear?”

Anders slipped off the bed slowly. The last thing he wanted was to draw attention to himself now. He needed to get the knife away from Einar.

“Einar, please,” Clara said, shaking her head. She whimpered as Einar held the blade against her bare chest.

“I expected to find you in bed with that ‘dear Captain Wolff’,” he said. He laughed and shook his head. “Of course, you aren’t content to cheat just once. You would bring others to our bed.” He threw her away then, with another animalistic growl.

As he rounded on Anders, Clara scrambled back from them. Anders took a step back, instinctively throwing out one hand as Einar swung the blade. He recoiled in pain as the knife cut into his arm.

He reached over one shoulder and brought down his staff, just in time to catch the blade with it. He knocked Einar back and shook his head. “Don’t do this,” he said, fighting to keep the tremor out of his voice.

He could see that Einar wouldn’t listen to reason. The enraged man threw himself forward, knocking Anders to the floor. Anders gasped as the blade sank into his chest. He heard Einar withdraw the blade and stab him a second time. Then, he felt his attacker step back.

Anders forced his eyes open. Einar rounded on Clara. She screamed as he swung the blade at her. He caught her throat with the weapon. Her blood splattered across the room and she collapsed. A moment later, her body dissolved in a shower of light.

Anders closed his eyes. He heard other sounds, but he was cold and tired. He wanted to rest. Someone called his name and he forced his eyes open once more. His brows furrowed. It was Captain Hummel.

“Don’t die,” he said, looking deep into Anders eyes. “You hear me? You need to live, Anders!” He glanced back over one shoulder. “Sindri!” The captain cursed softly and said, “Get Sindri in here.”

“Yes, sir,” someone answered.

Anders felt as if he were floating. The pain had faded to the background. He closed his eyes and relaxed. He was dimly aware of someone calling him, but he didn’t have the strength to see who it was this time.

Leisl scowled. “What are they doing?”

Sander stopped his exercising and looked over in the same direction where Leisl was. Sidhe were darting in and out of the flowers that were scattered through the meadows. “Playing,” he said. Then he returned to his exercise.

“Playing,” Leisl repeated. Her scowl deepened. They had time to play? “Shouldn’t they be doing some kind of… work?”

“It’s training,” Yori said. He smiled faintly when Leisl spun to face him. Waving away her sudden bow, he added, “Part of their duties require them to sneak around – remain out of sight. This is how they prepare for that.”

“Ah,” Leisl said. A faint flush colored her cheeks. “So, then, even though they’re playing…”

“They’re also working,” Yori said. He grinned brightly. “You should remember: Not everything is what it seems.”
