Flash Memory maker, Kingston Digital announced that has struck a deal with Paramount Pictures to bring full-length movies on SD memory cards.

With so many formats of storage out there, and falling prices for SD cards, this might just be the idea to be a hit with the masses. DVD drives and SD card slots are in most computers. If you have a netbook, an SD card slot is most likely in there, making Kingston’s decision a no-brainer.

Then again, it might not be such a smart idea. Other flash makers such as Sandisk have tried to load music albums onto microSD cards with little success. I believe it’s just simpler to skip any physical media storage and go right to digital. The success of the iPod comes to mind. With storage capacities for gadgets ballooning by the month, even SD cards may be dead in five years time.

No information on whether or not the movies would be HD-ready video or not.

It also includes a new ‘Skin Tone’ enhancer for smoother skin tones, more metadata fields, adjustments for individual colour channels and the ability to add vignetting. It is available to the US only from the Phase One website for an RRP of $399
- Panasonic’s eight annual competition opened for entries; the theme is ‘visualise (visualize) music’. Winners get a DMC-ZX1 each month, and the ultimate winner gets a DMC-GF1, with two runner-ups receiving a DMC-FZ38 each. It closes on April 30th, 2010
- Tamron released a 17-50mm f/2.8 Di II VC zoom targeted to APS-C sensor cameras for Canon
- SanDisk Memory cards now offer up to 32GB capacity
- Nikon announced version 1.5.0for its Capture NX software

SanDisk SDHC Extreme III 8 GB 30MB Edition Review

Hi,

ich habe die Sandisk Extreme III 8 GB bisher zufrieden in meiner Kamera verwendet, da ich mehr Speicher brauchte mußte also eine 2. Karte her und da fiel meine Wahl natürlich auf den Nachfolger meiner aktuellen (sehr schnellen Extreme III) die Extreme III 30 MB/s Edition.

Direkt nachdem sie angekommen ist, habe ich sie direkt in die EOS 450D und zum Vergleich mit der alten Karte, Serienbilder angefertigt.

30 Sekunden Serienbild Test:

Extreme III: 35 Bilder RAW Format (ca 14MB pro Bild)
Extreme III 30 MB/s Edition: 38 Bilder RAW Format (ca 14MB pro Bild)

Nun der Unterschied ist recht klein, aber vorweisbar. Das unterstreicht auch der 2. Test den ich mit X-Bench an meinem MacBook Pro gemacht habe:

Die Extreme III 30 MB/s Edition ist eine der schnellsten SDHC Karten auf dem Markt. Allerdings ist sie nur minimal schneller als ihr Vorgänger die Extreme III. Bei weitem kommt sie nicht an die 30 MB pro Sekunde, mit denen Werbung gemacht wird. Also alles in allem eine super Karte, die nicht ganz mit der Werbung mithält und daher für die Leistung zu teuer ist. 4 Sterne.

Canon Powershot SX120IS

Akhirnyaaaa… kesampean juga beli digicam, setelah bingang bingung milih antara mau beli Panasonic Lumix FZ18, Panasonic Lumix TZ15, Canon  Powershot D10 sama Canon Powershot SX120IS, akhirnya gw memutuskan untuk beli yang murmer aja, dengan 10x Optical zoom yaitu Canon Powershot SX120IS. Kemarin pulang kantor gw pergi ke pasar baru dianter bokap, abis mutar muter di gedung sebrang Metro Atom Plaza, kaga ada yang jual Canon SX120IS, meanwhile tadi sore temen kantor gw ada yang bilang tadi dia abis dari toko digicam langganannya anekafoto untuk beli batere dan dia liat Canon SX120IS available, disitu harganya Rp2.640.000, lebih mahal dari harga yang tertera di situs tokocamzone yang cuma Rp2.500.000. Yaah berhubung gw butuh tu digicam immediately buat konsinyering ke Lembang besok, akhirnya gw ambil deh dengan harga Rp2.615.000.

Estimasi gw sendiri untuk harga digicam, charger + 4 battery, SD Card sama case nya Rp3.190.000, tapi gw berhasil membawa pulang Canon SX120IS, Memory Card Sandisk Extreme III 4GB, Charger Sanyo yang Quick Refresh (pas nge-charge dia kosongin dulu tu batere, baru di isi ulang, karena batere AA bagusnya di charge dalam kondisi kosong), 4 Battery Sanyo 2700 MAh (2 udah include di charger nya), LCD Screen Guide & digicam case dengan total harga Rp3.178.000 beda tipiiiisss sama estimasi gw. Emang sih kameranya lebih mahal dari harga di tokocamzone, tapi harga charger, battery sama memory card di Aneka Foto lebih murah, bisa terpaut Rp30ribuan sampe Rp60ribuan dari tokocamzone, ujung2nya equal juga sih, secarrra gw juga udah dapet charger dan memory card yang lebih bagus dari estimasi gw yang semula ditambah udah pake LCD Screen Guard, hanya saja beli casenya bukan yang merk lowepro karena Canon SX120IS terlalu besar untuk stock lowepro yang tersedia, tapi hard case yang gw beli cukup elekhan walopun harganya murmer.

Tapi puwash lah dengan semua barang yang gw beli di sana. I’ll take pasar baru as one of my favorite shopping center, terutama di Metro Atom Plaza nya. Gw beli pas udah injury time tu toko mo tutup, the store supposed to be closed at 17:30.

Pulang dengan suka hati dong gw, cuma ada yang ga ngenakin pas pulang dari pasar baru di lampu merah deket Gajah Mada Plaza, muacet abiss… bokap gw dengan lihainya nyelap nyelip diantara kendaraan2 yang padet banget, nah pas ngelewatin jalan yang geradakan motornya dibawa miring ke kiri banget, alhasil gw yang duduk nyamping dengan manis karena pake rok, melorot dan gw turun aja dari motor, tapi gw belum sempet naek, babe guwe maen jalan aja, gw udah manggil2 “Ayah! Ayah!!” gw kira bokap mau menepi, ternyata belio malah jalan terooosss… huff untung masih lampu merah, sambil mengambil langkah seribu gw coba kerjar lah tu babe guwe, yaakk… tinggal beberapa langkah lagi… and then lampunya berubah ijo, damn! Dan akhirnya saudara saudara… gw ditinggal di lampu merah itu sambil nenteng2 helm pink menatapi bokap gw yang dengan santainya pergi meninggalkan diriku yang malang ini.

Sambil ngarep belio balik jemput gw, gw celingukan mencoba mengenali daerah asing tempat gw berdiri, sambil mikir ‘duh kayanya bokap ga bakal balik untuk jemput gw deh secarrra lampu merah tempat gw berdiri jalannya satu arah, dan klo muter balik jauh + muacet pula, udah hopeless lah pokoknya’. Tiba2 babe gw nelpon juga pas belio udah sampe rumah, Gosh! Napa nyadarnya lama bener yak? The state of the state? “A train wreck,” says one official.

If the world’s eighth-largest economy were a member of the proper religious order, it’d be time to call in a priest to administer last rites.

Name almost any serious malady and the state of California has it: the nation’s highest marginal tax rate coupled with an abysmal public education system; the most home foreclosures; a free-falling commercial real estate sector; lame-duck governor with no legislative support and a disdain for an annual budget process that he refers to as kabuki theater; unemployment somewhere between the official number of 12% and the whisper number of 18%; a 20% drop in year-over-year revenue; municipalities that have either declared bankruptcy (Vallejo) or are on the verge (Los Angeles); and a black-box permitting process that scares away business investment even while every week, 3,000 more taxpayers migrate to greener pastures.

Californians may be a can-do lot, but faced with all that evidence and much more, the political and economic leaders who spoke at the Milken Institute’s annual “State of the State” conference held yesterday at the Beverly Hilton could hardly have been more dour. “It’s a train wreck, and it’s getting worse,” said Bill Lockyer, California State Treasurer. Added former Assembly speaker Bob Hertzberg, now co-chair of governance reform group California Forward, “A high-speed train wreck.”

What’s this got to do with technology? Nothing, unless you consider that California is home to the many of the biggest tech companies on the planet (and 51 members of the FORTUNE 500), the bulk of the venture capital industry, many leaders of green-tech, two of the most patent-producing universities in the world in Stanford and UC Berkeley, and top thinkers across all spectra.

“California represents 10% of the population of the United States,” said Eric McAfee, chairman of McAfee Capital and CEO of AE Biofuels. “but probably 50% of innovation.”

Tech into ploughshares?

Ironically, Silicon Valley has built the tools and infrastructure to allow talented people to work anywhere in the world they choose, and as the state circles the drain, the fear is that businesses, entrepreneurs, and students will no longer feel the pull of the Golden State.

From a political and budgetary perspective, California has myriad problems – from Proposition 13 to direct-democracy ballot initiatives to abysmal credit ratings. But the biggest problem may be girth. The state increasingly seems too big not to fail.

“States were never intended to be the size of the entire eastern seaboard,” said Hertzberg. “What is the commonality between the folks in Calexico and Crescent City? This manifests itself in a politboro style of government in Sacramaento.”

None of the speakers–including gubernatorial candidates Gavin Newsom and Steve Poizner–offered a magic bullet, but there was some consensus on where to start.

Many called for an adjustment to the mandate that 2/3 of the legislature must approve a budget or a repeal of term limits that seem to enslave legislatures to special interests.

Others craved less (or more, take your pick) taxes and a lessened (or at least consistent) regulatory structure. Chevron’s (CVX) John Watson, who will assume the CEO role in January, said the permit process for an upgrade to the company’s Richmond, California, refinery took four years while an Indian company built its own entire refinery in half the time.

Still others offered hope that things will somehow work themselves out–because California has been in the dumps before and that the state will continue to be a magnet for the brightest immigrants.

“The combination of great science and great local universities and venture capital money started not just Genentech in 1976, but an entire industry,” says former Genentech president and current UCSF chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann, showing a slide of California tech companies that were either founded by immigrants or where immigrants played key roles in the early days, including Yahoo (YHOO), Sun (JAVA) , eBay (EBAY), Intel (INTC), Google (GOOG), Viewsonic, SanDisk (SNDK), and Nvidia (NVDA). “There’s something special about California: the atmosphere, the diversity, a wish to be curious and ask questions. The secret sauce behind Genentech, the Googles, Yahoos, and Amgens is the combination of entrepreneurial spirit, great universities, and a willingess to marry business and science.”

Desmond-Hellman warned, however, that Genentech has remained a biotech powerhouse because it has never lost sight of where its power comes from. “We always believed that the company would be no better than the people we recruited and we keep,” she said. “We never took for granted that people had to work at Genentech. They have choices.”

So do the 3,000 Californians leaving the state every week.

The line has been renamed simply ULTRA  (previously known as ULTRA II).

Sandisk has renamed the ULTRA II line of products to a more simple just plain ULTRA.

There has been a subsequent speed bump to a read/write performance of up to 30MB/s and the sticker artwork has also changed.

The part numbers and UPC codes have remained the same. The ULTRA line is still under the SDCFH-XXXX designations.
