Sandman: Noites sem fim

Adentrando, história sobre a mais jovem dos Perpétuos, Delirium, é, na minha opinião, uma das melhores do álbum. O modo como Gaiman a estruturou parece um pouco confuso a príncipio, mas essa era exatamente a intenção.

Nela, Delirium se encontra perdida e ferida dentro de seu próprio reino. Daniel, o atual Sandman, o corvo Matthew e Barnabás, o cão guardião de Delirium, tentam reunir um exército de loucos para resgata-la de dentro de seus domínios.

A história é narrada da perspectiva dos loucos, sendo toda fragmentada e muitas vezes indiferenciada. Os desenhos de Bill Sienkiewicz seguem o mesmo padrão do texto de Gaiman, transmitindo uma sensação de estranheza e certo desconforto.

Na realidade, o que eles conseguem é transmitir exatamente o que se passa na mente de alguém mentalmente perturbado, incapaz de diferenciar o que é real do que é mera fantasia, incapaz de distinguir a si mesmo e aos outros que o rodeiam. Uma forma bastante original e genial de mostrar quem (ou o que) é Delirium.

He was a beautiful tort English Angora.

He was a Grand Champion with 4 legs.

He was the sweetest boy.

He was only a little over 3 years old.

He was one of the first two English Angora’s I brought home.

Stan called me on my way home last night to tell me that he had died. This was totally unexpected. I feel so bad that when I was out getting bunnies for the show yesterday morning, I didn’t take the time to give him a pat on the head. I never dreamed he wouldn’t be there when I got home.

There didn’t appear to be anything wrong with him outwardly. He had been cut down a few weeks ago, and had been snarfing down his food like normal.

Sandy had recently sired a litter with Hunneshagen’s Salome. This was her first litter and they did not make it. This makes me even more sad to know that I have no offspring of Sandy.

Oh, Sandy.  I hope there wasn’t something I could have done.  I miss you.

It occurred to me that since this is current, I should cover this:

Okay, so NPR made a very backhanded compliment to The Sandman series. This dude whose blog I’ve never read before in my whole life has a very good point about Sandman, I mean I’ve read parts of Sandman and I have no idea who Morrissey is. My best friend reads Sandman and he’s as non-goth as it gets. So why is NPR confusing Goth with Emo, or Sandman with a Goth stereotype? Neil Gaiman agrees that the article from NPR made patronising cliches and I reckon that Dan Stryker (the bloke whose blog I’ve never read before but am about to add to my RSS feed) is justified in being offended on a far greater level than I am. It takes advanced age to be offended to a greater degree about stereotyping Sandman fans, and I can’t really add much to the debate other than that even though I wasn’t old enough to read Sandman when it came out the first time, I reckon that it’s pretty unfair to lump an entire fanbase into a demographic without detailed sociological evidence. And I’m saying that as a Society and Culture student and HSC graduate, the NPR article didn’t do ethical research, or any interviews of Sandman fans to research the articles. And even if you throw all sociology graces out the window, comparing Sandman fans to Twilight fans is just unfair.

Marvel Spider-man 3 movie brought a whole lot of Spider-man figures to collect. One of the coolest series was the Titanium Die Cast series which consisted of :

• Spider-man in 2 poses
• Symbiote Black suited Spider-man
  
• New Goblin
• Venom
• Sandman

Each came with their own Spider-man 3 base and with cool detail.

Ok, I’ll admit it, I’ve never read the seminal comic book series Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Series. Why? Because it’s so large, so overwhelming that I didn’t know where to, pardon the pun, to Enter Sandman. So NPR says the book “The Dream Hunters” offers me a chance and an entry point into the series. It’s been re-released in honor of the 20th anniversary of The Sandman Series.

Recently I read in connection to Latour that there has been a pulverization of the material, somehow, and that this somehow points us towards a world of objects. It calls to mind for me that for Spinoza the world itself too is pulverized, or must be pulverized unto a microstate, so as to become fully active (that leap, that direction). Individual things must be grasped, not abstractions, or generalizations, not the ens rationalis. That is, there is a kind of degree-zero intensification of a thing into its raw, state of potentiated energy (Deleuze and Guattari’s Body Without Organs perhaps). It also reminds me of the very poetic rendition of the birth of sandman in Spiderman 3, wherein he gets pulverized, one of the most moving scenes of animation ever assembled. Pulverization occurs in a field, we are reminded. Nostalgia and wound last across persons, and objects are summoned into orbs of direction not always benign. It is not the pulverization of matter, but the context into which it is done, the motivations and inflammation that occur around such acts. I’m reading an essay as well that suggests that Latour’s We Have Never Been Modern should be read as We Have Never Been Socialist. Interesting. We turn things into “objects” so that forces can act upon and through them. We make ourselves into objects for the same. We  give them to the field. Think of what has been made. Think of the field.

I’m re-reading the early Sandman graphic novels by Neil Gaiman.  I find it amazing that one writer can be so talented and prolific in such a variety of genres — graphic novels, full length fantasy novels, youth fiction, and children’s books.  Neil Gaiman does it all, and he does it so well.

What I’m Reading:  Neil Gaiman – Sandman, Stephen King – Salem’s Lot

What I’m Doing:  Pre-Production of short film, Con Artists – filming hopefully to begin sometime next month.  This is a project I’m working on with my lady friend, Katie, and is something we’re both passionate about.  Con Artists follows 4 washed-up actors reuniting in a shitty bar for the first time in 15 years.  What follows is lots of beer, bad food, and a look at storytelling synonymous with banter. 

The new season of Curb is going pretty pretty pretty good, forgetting even all of the Seinfeld hype.  Can’t wait to see what LD has in store for the season finale.  Dexter is quite interesting this season and they even took some really big risks (ex: SPOILER – the death of Lundy).  I’m certainly enjoying this season much more than the last.  Jimmy Smits was great and all, but looking back, Season 3 was kind of boring.  Plus I think John Lithgow is doing an exceptional job.  Kind of makes you forget about a time when he wasn’t considered a “villain” by the viewing public.  And as far as Dollhouse goes, all I can say is that it is getting better each episode.  Sad to see it cancelled but will make the most of it and watch the rest of Season 2/Series in December.  It’s Always Sunny…while still probably the funniest show on TV, just doesn’t compare to the early seasons (1, 2, maybe 3).

I’m not afraid to admit I’m a fan of the Gilmore Girls.  The study of small town behavior, friends and family (and coffee) resonates somewhere in my mind and blocks the fact that this is even considered a ”chick show”.  Plus, it’s fun to watch a show where you catch 95% of the references.  I’m only on episode 4 of Star Trek but I already see it will be a low-budget (or cheap) but revolutionary sci-fi show that will present interesting ideas in space.  SCTV  (Network 90) is a straight-up classic featuring two of my favorite comedic actors:  John Candy and Rick Moranis.  Some of my favorite sketches include:  anything with Johnny LaRue, Monster Chiller Horror Theater, The Gerry Todd Show, and Mel’s Rock Pile.

Flight of the Conchords – I Told You I Was Freaky is getting heavy rotation in my car due to basically all of the songs.  What a fun album to listen to!  I also just brought out Nick Cave and the Bad Seed’s album Dig Lazarus Dig! for the first time since it was new, and I still think it’s one of the band’s best.  Steely Dan’s Can’t Buy a Thrill LP is being played on the record player – a great album to hear on vinyl if you haven’t.

Just finished Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Vol. 2:  The Doll’s House.  I could not put this book down.  I was enthralled by the story from the get-go, from the prelude to the closing chapter, and especially the in-between (Men of Good Fortune and the Cereal Convention).  Going for Dream Country next.  Also got through the first part of Salem’s Lot and now working on the Emperor of Ice Cream.  I’ve seen both films but this is my first time reading the book.  So far, book is winning.
