ERZINGEN, 10 septembrie 2011. Cu 27 de zile înaintea startului celei de a 43-a ediții a Campionatelor Mondiale de la Tokyo, gimnaștii și gimnastele au susținut azi un nou test, de această dată în mica localitate germană Erzingen, într-un triunghiular – Germania, Elveția, România – care tinde să devină tradițional în cadrul etapelor de pregătire ale marilor evenimente continentale și mondiale, competiție deschisă de concursul fetelor și încheiat cu victoria categorică a gimnastelor noastre.

Conform programului, primele au intrat în competiție formațiile feminine, gimnastele noastre dominând categoric disputa cu celelalte participante, așa cum s-a întâmplat și în urmă cu un an, la Schaffhausen.

De această dată diferența a fost și mai substanțială în comparație cu 2010:

Echipa României a fost alcătuită din Amelia Racea, Daniela Andrei, Diana Bulimar, Raluca Haidu, Sandra Izbașa și Ana Porgras, în “afară de concurs” evoluând și Cătălina Ponor.

Fetele noastre au dominat nu numai concursul pe echipe, dar și pe cel individual, cinci dintre ele situându-se în primele 6 locuri ale clasamentului, singura “intrusă” fiind germana Nadine Jarosch, poziția a 5-a.

Așadar, întrecerea a readus în prim-plan forma bună în care se află campioana națională Ana Porgras, care, cu 58.100, cele mai mari note din concurs la bârnă (15.30) și sol (14.50), a ocupat locul întâi, ea având adversare pe măsură doar între colegele de lot.

Some training videos were also featured. The most impressive was Catalina Ponor on beam. She has not been back for long, but she has almost all of the skills she needs for a world class routine already: a double turn, a roundoff+layout combination, a couple long sequences featuring D rated skills and a double pike dismount.

Izbasa was very impressive today and deserved her title. She started out with a huge full in and triple full to stag jump. Her last two tumbling runs were not as precise (1 1/2 to rudi to awkward beat jump, 2 1/2 to front tuck/layout full), but were pretty well performed. Chelaru slightly overrotated her whip+triple and performed a somewhat sloppy stag jump out of her double tuck, but was entertaining as always and stuck her double pike dismount. Belokobilskaya performed a solid routine, and could have won a very surprising gold if she had managed to jump out of her 2 1/2 twist. Still, especially with Mustafina out, this result strengthens her chance at making the team for the World Championships.

Tweddle performed the best floor routine I’ve seen from her since mid-2010. It was not perfect, but she attempted most of her tumbling (she left out jumps out of passes), which was impressive because of her recent injury. Croket was delightful as always, but tiny hops on all of her passes probably cost her a medal. Ferlito performed a good routine without the difficulty of the top contenders. She did not perform a triple Y turn. Dementyeva had issues with her tumbling, with low landings on her triple full and her full in. Csillag started off well with piked and tucked full ins, but couldn’t keep it up and ended her routine by going out of bounds.

Sandra Izbasa and Diana Chelaru are the obvious medal favorites. They are consistent with strong tumbling. Izbasa’s routine is a little bit less difficult, but I would love her to win. Her dance is more mature and she has finally managed to do a front layout full out of her last pass, which is quite impressive. Chelaru has looked good on floor throughout the championships. It will be interesting to see if she attempts her double layout tomorrow.

Belokobilskaya and Dementyeva occupied 3rd and 4th place in prelims, and could repeat that in finals. Both have somewhat sloppy legs twisting, but have nice, elegant routines. Belokobilskaya has more difficulty, but Dementyeva is typically more consistent. I really think that Belokobilskaya this year is in a very similar position to Dementyeva last year: the overshadowed junior who is inconsistent in major events.

In my opinion, despite their preliminary results, they are in no way guaranteed a medal if they hit. I would love it if Julie Croket won a bronze (or more!) for Belgium. She has very strong, clean tumbling, including a piked full in and a 2 1/2 into front layout full combination, and interesting dance. I somewhat doubt that she can outscore the Russians due to lower difficulty, but she has a chance if she has clean landings like she did in the all around.

Beth Tweddle is the two time defending champion, but I doubt she’ll win again tomorrow. She is, however, capable of one of if not the most difficult routine out of all of the gymnasts. She is returning from a concussion, and has been struggling on floor ever since last year’s world championships where she failed to make the final. If she manages to hit her routine, she can medal. She seems to be going into the final with the goal of just doing as well as she can and seeing where it gets her.

The last two gymnasts are Carlotta Ferlito and Tunde Csillag, neither of which I think have a chance of winning a medal due to relative lack of difficulty. I am hoping that Ferlito will attempt the triple Y turn again and make it all the way around; she was very close to fully rotating it in prelims. I know next to nothing about Csillag’s floor, but she seems to lack difficulty. At worlds, one of her passes was a front full.

Congratulations to Sandra Izbasa, who won her first european vault title today! Both of her vaults were beautiful, and she managed to beat two gymnasts with higher difficulty, which is always impressive. Chusovitina competed a rudi for the first time since the olympics, followed by a 1 1/2 twisting tsukahara. Kaeslin’s rudi, in my opinion, looked much better than it did in the beginning of the year. Her double twisting yurchenko, however, was very low. Nabieva did not attempt an Amanar, even though she did put 6.5 up on the screen. I like her Podkopayeva, it actually looks clean!

The Favorites

Aliya Mustafina has to be the favorite to take this title. If she’s lucky, she’ll get 3rd, 5th or 8th in prelims (the last three spots in finals, according to the draw) so she knows what she has to do in finals to win. When she competes two vaults, her average difficulty ranges from 5.3 to 6.3. She’s competed her 6.1 and 6.5 vaults this year. I don’t expect her do do them in prelims, but as she showed at the American Cup and the French International, she can land them when the pressure is on, even if it may not have been the original plan.

Tatiana Nabieva also has to be a favorite. She has the same 6.1 and 6.5 vaults as Mustafina, but is even sloppier and less consistent with them. I expect to see a piked Podkopayeva and a double twisting yurchenko from her, as she has been doing all year. Her Amanars attempts were scary during podium training at the French International. The vaults she does have, though, may be enough for a medal.

Ariella Kaeslin is a former European Champion, but her vaults are not as strong as they once were. The last time she competed her Rudi, she failed to land it on her feet. If the same happens in prelims here, she won’t be in finals. She got a double twisting yurchenko last year, but hasn’t competed it yet this year. She’d have to really put it together to medal here.

Oksana Chusovitina is another past European Champion, and she has been looking much better in the beginning of this season than she has since Beijing. With a 1 1/2 twisting tsukahara and a front layout full, she’s got more difficulty than some other gymnasts if they don’t go all out. Although her form is not perfect, she should have no trouble making the final (although she failed to make finals at europeans and worlds last year) and finishing among the top gymnasts who are half her age.

Other Contenders

Although she has not competed a second vault in a few years, Sandra Izbasa is a serious threat to anybody in the final. She had a clean double twisting yurchenko at worlds last year, and has been training a very nice layout podkopayeva. Those are two pretty difficulty vaults, and her execution is arguably better than anybody else who may make the final. Click here to watch her training vault a month ago.

Izbasa’s two teammates, Diana Chelaru and Amelia Racea also compete two vaults. They both compete double twisting yurchenko’s as their first vault- not the cleanest, but they’re alright. Chelaru only competed a front pike as her second vault a few weeks ago, which is a pretty big downgrade for her. It will be interesting to see if she has something else in her repertoire that she wasn’t quite ready to debut. Racea used to compete a yurchenko 1/2 on front tuck 1/2 off. Who knows what she’s training at the moment. One of them should make finals.

Giula Steingruber is another strong Swiss vaulter who is looking to follow in the footsteps of teammate Ariella Kaeslin. She has a powerful but somewhat sloppy Rudi and a full twisting tsukahara. Her difficulty should mean she has no problem making the final, but a full twisting tsukahara may be a bit to weak to earn her a medal.

Julie Croket may be the final finalist. She has decent form on a handspring front tuck full and a full twisting yurchenko. Her difficulty won’t be the highest, but her landings are usually solid. Maria Livchikova could also take the final spot if she lands her vaults, a double twisting yurchenko and a front pike 1/2.

Nabieva will probably get overscored and medal, though. Or she will cry when she doesn’t.
