<li>aippachi Aswiyuja</li>
<li>kaarththikai Karthika</li>

<ol>
<li>Jan 7th 2009 was accepted as Vaikuntha Ekadasi both in the Tamil and the Telugu calendars, but the Telugu Calendars called it Pushya Suddha Ekadasi and the Tamil Calendars called the same day as Margasira (Markazi) Suddha Ekadasi.</li>
<li>Jan 26th 2009  was Pushya Amavasya in the telugu calendar, Jan 25th was Thai Amavasya in the Tamil calendar &#8211; so you might hope for a match.</li>
<li>But Feb 9th is Magha Pournami in the Telugu Calendar and feb 8th is Thai (Pushya) Poosam (Pournami) in the Tamil Calendar.</li>
<li>Telugu months start with the first day after the new moon, so in any lunar month, the pournami comes first and then the amavasya. In Tamil month reckoning, it appears as if the amavasaya occurs first and then the pournami, <em>but this observation needs verification.</em></li>
<li><strong><em>Feb 23rd 2009 was MahaSivarathri in both calendars, but Telugu people will tell you that it is Magha Bahula (Krishnapaksha) Chaturdasi and Tamilians will tell you that it is Thai (Pushya) Krishnapaksha Chaturdasi.</em></strong></li>
<li>So Telugu month-names &#8220;occur&#8221; before the corresponding Tamil month names.</li>
<li>The first day of Chaitra Masam as per telugu/kannada people was 27th March 2009. This was our New Year Day. The first day of Chittirai (Chaitra), as per Tamilians was 14th April 2009.</li>
<li>27th march 2009 was Chandramana Ugadi (Lunar New Year), 14th April 2009 was Saura Samvatsaradi (Solar New Year).</li>
<li>What was Vaisakha Pournami to telugu people was Chaitra Pournami to Tamilians &#8211; May 9th 2009.</li>
</ol>
<p>And so on&#8230;</p>
<p><strong><em>Hindi  And Telugu (Sanskrit Names) : </em></strong></p>
<p>The Hindi month names are variants of the sanskrit (telugu) names. For eg Pushya Masam in Sanskrit (telugu) becomes Posh in Hindi.</p>
<p>Jan 11th 2009 was Pushya Pournima (Posh Pournima) in both Hindi and telugu calendars. But Jan 12th 2009 was Pushya Krishna Paksha Padyami in Telugu Calendars and it was Magha Krishna Paksha  Dwitiya in the Hindi calendar. Hindi months of the same name variants start a fortnight earlier than telugu (sanskrit) months. There is no mention of Vaikuntha Ekadasi in the Hindi calendar I referenced.</p>
<p><strong><em>Feb 23rd 2009 was Mahashivarathri even in in the Hindi calendar but, it was called Phalgun Krishna Dwadasi in the Hindi Calendar, Magha Bahula (Krishnapaksha) Chaturdasi in the telugu calendar, Thai (Pushya) Krishnapaksha Chaturdasi in the Tamil Calendar.</em></strong></p>
<p>In the Hindi Calendar,  Chaitra Masam started on 12th March 2009. 11th March was celebrated as Holi or Phalguna Pournami. Telugu (Sanskrit) and Hindi calendars agree on month names only in the Suklapaksha (the fortnight preceding pournami). So Holi is in a sense a year-end festival, because it ends Hemanta, the season after winter and before spring. <em>The Hindi New Year has been given in the reference as March 27th 2009, Chaitra Sukla Paksha PratiPada (Padyami), as it is for the Telugu and Kannada people. </em></p>

<title><![CDATA[The Conscious Breath ]]></title>

<description><![CDATA[We breathe, almost unknowingly, our entire life.  To live is to breathe.  The absence of breath lead]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>We breathe, almost unknowingly, our entire life.  To live is to breathe.  The absence of breath leads to the loss of one’s physical life &#8211; and yet, we are unconscious of its power and its ability to so vividly change our life experience.</p>
<p>All too often I recognize that I am <em>not</em> breathing – rather, I am holding my breath.  Several times a day I have to mindfully correct myself.  I may even have to verbally say, ‘breathe’.  Within moments I notice a shift in my body.  Physically, my shoulders drop and my stomach expands rather than my chest.  Mentally, my mind shifts from future moments to the present.  Emotionally, my mood lightens.  However, persistence is the means to sustaining this awareness, since very swiftly one’s mind can move from the breath to daily activities.</p>
<p><strong><em> </em></strong></p>
<p><strong><em>When the breath wanders the mind also is unsteady.  But when the breath is calmed the mind too will be still, and the yogi achieves long life.  Therefore, one should learn to control the breath. </em></strong></p>

<p>Prana (प्राण), a Sanskrit word, translates to vital energy, life force or vital life.  Prana feeds the mind and the physical body.  Pranayama (प्राणायाम) can be translated to restraint of prana or breath. Yoga often refers to pranayama as ‘breath control’ and prana as breath.  Thus, breath can be thought of as ones vital energy, life force or vital life.</p>

<p><strong><em>The universe is filled with prana.  The universal prana is thus the Para-Prakiti (pure Nature), immanent energy or force which is derived from the infinite Spirit, and which permeates and sustains the universe. </em></strong></p>

<p>In an age where we habitually turn to stimulants to carry us through our often tumultuous days, our breath is always with us and can transform our daily experience when we become more conscious (mindful) of its power.</p>

<p><strong>A Basic Breathing Exercise </strong></p>
<p>Simply observe (be conscious of) your breathing.</p>
<p>And note:</p>
<ul>
<li>Do you hold your breath?</li>
<li>Do you breathe fast? Slow?</li>
<li>When you breathe, does your chest      expand?  Does your stomach expand?</li>
<li>Do you feel calm or anxious?</li>
<li>Do you carry tension? If so, where      in your body is it present?</li>
<li>What happens when you start to      change your breathing patterns?  Do      you notice a change in your body?</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>The Watching of Others </strong></p>
<p>Here is another simple exercise:</p>
<ul>
<li>Observe the breathing patterns of a      small child (an infant).   Infants instinctively breathe through      their diaphragm – watch as their stomach rises and falls.</li>
<li>Alternatively or additionally, observe      an animal breathing.  A dog’s      stomach will expand and contract when panting (rather than its      chest).</li>
</ul>
<p>Take a few moments to make notes in your mind or on paper of your observations.</p>

<strong>The Bible</strong> is available in almost all languages in the world. But, a copy of it in Sanskrit is a rarity. It is unknown to many that the Bible was translated into Sanskrit language by Christian Missionaries in by the end of 19th century CE. This speaks volumes about their dedication to the task of spreading Christianity in India. By the end of the 19th century, Sanskrit had been reduced to the status of a classical language handled only by the intelligentsia. Perhaps to propagate Christianity among the Hindu intelligentsia, the missionaries would have translated the Bible into Sanskrit, the sacred language of Hindus. </p>
<p>The Sanskrit version of the Old Testament was printed in four parts in 1848 and the New Testament in 1886 in Calcutta. Both these publications do not have English translations since these translations were obviously meant for Sanskrit scholars.</p>

In Sarva-darsana-sangraha the author successively passes in review the sixteen philosophical systems current in India in 14th century CE, and gives what appeared to him to be their most important tenets, and the principal arguments by which their followers endeavoured to maintain them. In the course of his sketches, he frequently explains at some length obscure details in the different systems.</p>
<p>The systems are arranged from the Advaita-point of view. They form a gradually ascending scale-the first, the Charvaka and Buddha, being the lowest as the farthest removed from Advaita, and the last, Sankhya and Yoga being the highest as approaching most nearly to it.</p>
<p>The author, Madhavacharya or Madhava Vidyaranya (not to be confused with Madhvacharya, propounder of Dwaita philosophy)  was an exponent of the Advaita school of philosophy in Hinduism. He is said to be the brother of Sayanacharya who wrote a commentary on the four Vedas. </p>
<p>The present translation was originally published serially in the Banaras Pandit between 1874 and 1878 and was carefully revised and republished in book form later and a second edition was printed in 1894.<br />

<p><strong>मानवीयता</strong><br />
मानवाधिकारस्य (Human rights) विषये अपि तथैव चीनदेशम् अनेके निन्दन्ति । किञ्चातः ? तत्र तु स्थितिः यथापूर्वं भवति । </p>

Complete text of <strong>Dasakkumara Charitam</strong> authored by renowned Sanskrit poet <strong>Dandi</strong> with Sanskrit Commentary Various Readings, a Literal English Translation, Explanatory and Critical Notes and an Exhaustive Introduction by M. R. Kale.</p>
<p>The Dasakumaracarita relates the adventures of ten princes in their pursuit of love and royal power. It contains stories of common life and reflects a faithful picture of Indian society during the period couched in the colourful style of Sanskrit prose. </p>
<p>Dandin was a  renowned Sanskrit author of prose romances and expounder on poetics. Although he produced literature on his own, most notably the Dasakumaracarita, first translated in 1927 as Hindoo Tales, or The Adventures of the Ten Princes, he is best known for composing the Kavyadarsa (&#8216;Mirror of Poetry&#8217;), the handbook of classical Sanskrit poetics, or Kavya. His writings were all in Sanskrit. He lived in Kanchipuram in modern-day Tamil Nadu in 6th-7th century. A shloka that explains the strengths of different poets says: Dandinah padalalithyam (&#8220;Dandin is the master of playful words&#8221;).</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>One of my fans of <strong><a title="All rights reserved: Satya Sarada Kandula" href="http://kathakanchiki.wordpress.com/">Thatha and the Magic Grain</a><span style="font-weight:normal;"> </span></strong>came up with the idea of Sanskrit online classes via skype or g voice chat. There are many wonderful resources on the net but she wants a &#8220;real&#8221; as in human teacher. We are trying it out soon. May be starting this Saturday Evening, because she is in U.S. since it is the first time, I think it will be a bit experimental.</p>
<p>The approach I am planning is to do some basic nouns (raAmah and sItA) and some basic verbs (aagacchati, vande) and then get cracking with passages from the <a href="http://oldthoughts.wordpress.com/bhagavad-gita-complete-satya-bhashyam/" target="_blank">Bhagavad Gita</a> or <a href="http://ancientindians.wordpress.com/valmiki-adikavi/" target="_blank">Valmiki</a> Ramayana&#8230;, may be even some <a href="http://satyaveda.wordpress.com" target="_blank">Vedic Mantras</a> and Upanishadic shlokas. So grammar + application, back to grammar.</p>
<p><strong><em>The system of </em></strong> <strong><em>Gurudakshina : </em></strong>For eg, while Uddanka brought the ear-rings of <a href="http://ancientindians.wordpress.com/aditi/" target="_blank">Aditi</a> for his teacher, <a href="http://ancientindians.wordpress.com/arjuna-%e0%a4%85%e0%a4%b0%e0%a5%8d%e0%a4%9c%e0%a5%81%e0%a4%a8/" target="_blank">Arjuna</a> captured Drupada for Drona and Sri Krishna brought back Sandipani&#8217;s son from the nether world. Most other normal students brought grain or cows  or gold. It depended on the capacity of the student and his family. And I think poor students just did some respectful service.</p>

<p><strong>Each chakra relates to a particular energetic function.  The first chakra, at the tip of your spine, relates to survival and the energy of your physical life. </strong></p>
<p><strong>The word &#8216;chakra&#8217; is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning &#8216;wheel&#8217;; but perhaps even a better translation would be spinning wheel. If you could see chakras (as many of us whom work with them do) you would be able to see each primary chakra as a spinning vortex or wheel of energy. </strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>There are 7 main chakras in the body and the first one is at the tip of your spine.  It’s about survival.  The second one is located 2 finger widths below your belly button and is about sensuality, sexuality and relationships.  The third chakra is located in the soft part of your solar plexus and is about control, resistance and manifestation.  The 4<sup>th</sup> chakra is located where the sternum bones meet in your chest.  This one is about love and self love, and love of others.  5<sup>th</sup> one is communication and creativity, and is located in the soft part of the neck.  The sixth is the 3<sup>rd</sup> eye and located just above and between your physical eyes.  It’s also the spirit part of you.  The seventh is located 2 inches above your head and is the connection to the source, supreme being or whoever it is for you.  It is also how you take yourself out into the world and how people view you.</strong></p>
